Summary
Sheriff Merlin Emrys is the only lawman in the old west town of Griffin Creek, Montana. He wears the badge of his father, Balinor, murdered seven years earlier. Standing over his father's grave, he'd made a solemn vow to bring his killers to justice. Despite his strong suspicion that Uther Pendragon, a wealthy rancher and the leader of the notorious Pendragon Gang, was involved, Merlin lacks the evidence to arrest him.
When he is informed that the Pendragon Gang is heading for Griffin Creek, the sheriff knows he must protect the people of his town. Alone, he confronts the gang as soon as they ride into town, only to discover that they are no longer led by Uther, but by his son. Merlin finds himself inexplicably drawn to Arthur Pendragon, despite knowing his gang was wanted for everything from cattle rustling, to robbing banks, to saloon brawls, and even murder. He soon discovers that Arthur is nothing like his father, and Arthur begins to question everything from his own heart to his father's legacy. As their relationship grows, the bond between lawman and outlaw becomes one of legends.

Lying on the ground behind Gwaine is a man with ripped clothes — dark hair, bony cheeks, chest heaving up and down. He doesn't look frightened exactly, more shaken, in an oddly feral sort of way. He massages thin wrists with fingers that match, shackles peeking out from under the torn sleeves, and stands up on his feet slowly, very carefully.
When he realises that someone's looking at him, he looks back.
Arthur feels something heavy settle in his throat — the man has such blue, blue eyes.

“No volunteers?” the man asked again, as if that would prompt someone to step up. “Well, I shall have to choose one of you myself, then.” Arthur felt the man’s eyes drag across the small mass of men. “How about…” His stomach began to sink when his gaze landed in his direction. “You?” His finger stopped right next to Arthur, and his stomach plummeted. Like the rest of the prisoners, he looked for the man who was unfortunate enough to be picked - although he already knew who it was.
Merlin blinked at Jarl, as if he couldn’t believe he was chosen out of all the strong, warrior-type men he was surrounded by. “Me?”
Jarl put his hands on his hips. “Death or glory, boy? You should be honoured.”
“But, I—” He started before Arthur cut him off.
“I volunteer!”

Alternatively, where that one scene in 3x12 plays out a little gayer and instead of Arthur dragging Merlin to save him, he goes the kind of Hunger-Games-I-volunteer-as-tribute route and ends up fighting Merlin instead of Gwaine in the slave trader's arena.
