“Can I foster him?” It was out of his mouth before he even realized. Sure, he wanted to ask, but he didn’t want to sound too eager about it. Casey gave him a withering, suspicious glare and he found himself rambling. “I want to. He’s a sweet kid, and I’m a doctor! I’m prepared to take care of him. And I live with my sister who is in school to be a doctor, too. And we have an accessible bathroom already, for after his surgery. My whole house is accessible! Ramps for wheelchairs and all one level. And! It’s a good neighborhood.”
“You got an ulterior motive?” Casey asked, thankfully cutting him off.
Robby hesitated. Her frown hardened and the words spilled out of him, “We clicked. He’s a good kid. I—I wanna adopt him.”

“Dr. Robby?” she asked, voice small.
“It’s okay,” he said gently. “Hope, just—stay calm, alright? Everything’s going to be okay.”
The man shut the door behind them and locked it with a sharp click that echoed like thunder in the small room.

Janey looks over at Jake – who shifts on the cot, but doesn’t disagree – then offers a wan smile while she nods and reaches back to pick up her purse. “Thanks. I’ve been meaning to check out the new cafeteria.”
Jake peeks up with a visible swallow, then looks back down at his feet, though it’s hard to tell if he’s really focusing on the injury or just avoiding Jack.
