I’d always known that grandma wasn’t really my grandmother—a distant relative at best. We were so different mainly in the way we looked that it didn’t take a genius to distinguish my deep bronzed skin from her almond eyes as to not really being of the same blood and background. But then there was my the rest of my family–-a large ensemble of aunts, uncles and cousins that resided in the Bharat Province with whom I occasionally communicated with, often with yearly visits.
Over a year has gone by, and I have yet to make peace with everything that happened—with Grandma, or the things that were kept from me until it blew up in my face with no soft landing. But if nothing else, it led me to Caleb, Zayne, and this quiet nook of this sleepless city where I could grow in my own reclusive little glory. Not that I’m particularly against living with a big family back in the province, but I’m not sure I can handle the constant overstimulation of so many people in one place, especially when I can barely manage seven in my apartment. Besides, I’m sure that before I even seriously considered the idea, Zayne and a certain someone would be knocking my door down to nag it out of me. -
