The Biolizard couldn’t speak, not in a traditional way. It was still just a dumb lizard. However, it was somewhat sentient. Somewhat. To communicate, it could create a link with a fellow user of chaos energy and from there it would be able to share its extremely simplistic thoughts and feelings.Shadow was the only one around it could share its thoughts with. So it did.
Little Shadow- that's what the creature had named him. The hybrid wasn’t sure the reason behind it, whether it be his size compared to the lizard or whether it saw him as something of a younger sibling.
As if on cue, he heard an intrusion in his thoughts as the lizard formed a link.
“Little Shadow.”

Summary
Maria doesn’t mind Shadow being quiet.
When people talk, he looks up: at faces, at indicators of a command, a direction, guidance. He waits to be told what to do. Run on the treadmill; give a blood sample, squeeze the dynamometer; do a spinal tap. He’s got a voice, a memory lauded with languages, all the means and reasons to ask the what and the why.
They drain him, the researchers; yet, he doesn’t ask what for. Maybe somebody’s already told him. Or he overheard his purpose. He’s alive so she can stop dying too early, and that’s enough for a purpose for him, so he does as he’s told.
She tries to give him opportunities to just be her little brother, just do fun things with her, things that don’t hurt him. He’s always clueless what to do then. Mobian hedgehogs are a social species, much in the same way humans are. Shadow’s not very social.
She knows there’s a lot in his head that he won’t or can't say. It’s just how he is. She’s fine with that.

When a battle with the baddie of the week becomes a Master Emerald-sized problem, Shadow and Sonic are in the heart of it. Summary
Shadow was initially cast out of the hive for being too weak, too individual from the rest of his siblings... too capable of challenging Black Doom for the rule of the Black Arms, to become The Emperor of the many hives, as well as starting his own. This Doom would not tolerate even the breath of a risk of happening.
So Shadow was tossed to earth, in the hopes that the lifeforms there would cause the pup's death while he was still weak.
Little did Doom know that Maria would take Shadow in after finding him in the Ark Research Facility Lab 5B, and raise him by herself. Inadvertently making Shadow more powerful than Doom.
Unfortunately for Maria and Shadow, Gerald takes notice, and having studied the Black Arms for decades and wanting to test the potential of producing a race of hybrids, with Maria as their 'mother' while honing Shadow into the perfect 'father' to further Gerald's goals.

Gerald Robotnik is the one who discovered the husk. He named it Sonic after it proved useful to Project Shadow. He sent it to Earth to buy himself more time, only to lose Sonic in the end.
Maria Robotnik knew she was going to be close friends with Sonic from the moment they first met. This closeness caused her sickness to flare when Sonic died. Gerald saved her by erasing her memories, and she only remembers Sonic when her dying breath leaves her.
Maria is the person Shadow was made for. She is his sister, and he loves her dearly. He also loves Sonic. He loves them both so much that Gerald is forced to erase his memory, too, when Maria's illness and Sonic's death nearly causes him to go berserk.
Abraham has never been fond of the aliens on the ARK, but he was friends with Sonic, mainly because the hedgehog never quit trying. Abraham is also the only one permitted to keep his memories of Sonic, driving yet another wedge between him and the others.
Sonic wakes up on Christmas Island with the company of the chao and no memories to guide him.
