Summary
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Little high, little low
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me
Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all awayMama, ooh, didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooh (any way the wind blows)
I don't wanna die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at allLyrics from Bohemian Rhapsody

Summary
Frances looks him over slowly. Purses her lips. Raylan wonders how he must look to her, all these years later. Nearly grown, standing on her front porch in his ratty jeans and thread-worn t-shirt and ball cap.
She sighs.
“Raylan,” she says, like the weight of his name alone is almost too much to bear. “What are you doing here?”
Or: Frances didn't die; she left. Seven years later, Raylan tracks her down, trying to recapture what she left behind. In the process, he somehow befriends her snarky seven-year-old neighbor, who reminds him a little too much of himself in all the worst ways.

Summary
He remembered being up in the hills with his kin and Mary telling him “If it ever gets too loud boy, you drink this and imagine a bubble around yourself, alright? One that’s hard and will protect you, and it will help you shield yourself from all that noise you hear.” Raylan hadn’t quite understood at the time, but she was helping him to learn to tune out what most folks didn’t see or hear. His Mama’s family, the McKinleys, they all had some amount of the Gift going back generations from before they even came to Kentucky apparently. His Mama had a knack for spells, and his Aunt Helen one for potions, but his cousin Mary had the one he had, a gift for Seeing. And he unfortunately had it stronger than most.
When Raylan left home he wound up in New Orleans, and spent several years there before he left, running from his life there, and all he had learned until it came back to haunt him in Kentucky.

Summary
Raylan and Boyd had a long and complicated history with each other, going back to when they were still babies, and grew even closer when Boyd’s mama died, giving birth to his baby brother and Miss Frances started coming over to help take care of the baby and make sure that Boyd was eating. They grew even closer as the years passed, while they shadowed Frances and learned from her, before she got sick and passed away, leaving Raylan and Boyd to lean on each other even more, as sometimes Raylan’s uncanny resemblance to his Mama unnerved Arlo and his Aunt Helen. Raylan never did get tall when it seemed like all the rest of their classmates did, but when he did hit his growth spurt it seemed to come all at once, as if once it was allowed to begin, it wasn’t taking the risk it would be taken away. Which lead to a great deal of clumsiness on Raylan’s part as he adjusted, and a new nickname.
Boyd had a fond smile on his face, and a trace of hidden laughter in his eyes when he asked “You alright there Bambi, only it seems like you’re trying awful hard to set that coffee there on fire with your eyes.”

Summary
“I ain’t doin’ it.” A pause, the only noise the chatter from Helen’s whining sedan. “You can’t make me.”
It sounds petulant, a childish whim tossed into the abyss of their lacking conversation. “You ain’t my momma.”
Helen’s brakes let out a pitiful squeal—the same sound a pig sent to slaughter makes—and Raylan’s head bounces off the headrest of the front passenger seat. “Shit!” It’s not a muttered curse, no petulant whine, it’s a reflexive gasp of pain. His fingers dance over the wound they’d carefully been avoiding. They come back smeared with red.
