Grandpa shook his head. “No, there wasn’t. Now get to work chopping these carrots. I want them so thin you can see light through them.”
Link conceded and got to work cutting his carrots, relishing in the simplicity of retired life. No more heroics for him.
He voiced that, which earned a laugh from his grandpa.

I wanted to do an in-depth character—and trauma—study, to explore the idea of a single hero of the Four Sword (Four from Jojo56830's Linked Universe AU is my fave because I love the Four Swords manga and Minish Cap) where his other selves aren't the result of arbitrary splits made by the Four Sword's magic, but the result of a traumatized Link developing Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Summary
Four has never felt bitter about his role as the hero. Sure, it tore his soul apart and altered his life permanently, but he never resented picking up a sword and battling evil. Why would he? He was protecting his home, his friends, and his family. It was a burden he carried happily, one he accepted of his own free will. No matter how dangerous and painful, Four would rise to the occasion every time.
Hyrule is their home, and when she bleeds so do they. To resent protecting her is to resent protecting themselves.
This was simple logic. Or, it was supposed to be.
It doesn’t feel simple now.
His Grandfather's grave is beautiful.

Summary
It has gotten deep into the cold winter season now, everything was drenched in white powdery snow. It sparkled and glimmer in the sunlight while Malachi Blackburn made his way to Link's forge for his daily lesson in smithing. He had expected it to go about as usual, with him admiring Link while he tried to focus on the lesson. But when he stepped into the warm forge, he was suddenly pushed back out into the cold by Grandpa Smith with a disgruntle Link by his side. Grandpa Smith then shut the door behind them with the comment of how they needed to act like normal teenagers and not stay cooped up inside all day. Well, that definitely didn't go how Malachi expected it to.
