“Is it really so surprising?” Atsushi’s voice is quiet, almost hesitant. “I mean… he’s always been like that.”
“Like what?” Dazai snaps, though his jaw tightens. “Like someone who doesn’t care? Like someone I don’t want to lose?”
Akutagawa watches silently, fingers tightening on his notebook. When he finally speaks, it’s with the calm finality of a judge. “You’re jealous. Admit it.”
Dazai’s laugh is bitter, hollow. “Jealous? Of him? No. That would be… pathetic.”
He looks away, but the truth clings to his words like a shadow he can’t shake.
(Or, how Dazai’s jealousy consumes him as he watches Chuuya throw himself recklessly into the arms of others, and how he, Akutagawa, and Atsushi end up stalking him in a desperate—and utterly futile—attempt to pull him back from the edge.)
