"Better for who?" Mon couldn’t help but raise her voice a little. It cracked slightly under the strain, under the volume, trembled, she started laughing to gloss over it, but the sound burst out frayed, half-mad. She must be starting to sound delirious. Maybe she was. Who could blame her, after the day she’d had? "Luthen? You?"
"The Rebellion," he said sharply, and now he was looking at her, straight into her eyes.

She should feel out of place, he thinks. When he had first seen her, tense and scared and, again alone, she had still been polished. Shiny and remote. A relic lain on the shelf in Luthen’s gallery. But she doesn’t feel out of place here in his grimy ship. There’s fresh ghosts about her, now. Her eyes are newly darkened by death. She is still wearing his coat.

“Kleya?” She prompts with a smile, as if Mon could ever forget Luthen's assistant. “You came by the shop to find something for your husband.”
