The Dreaming stands, but Dream... Dream is gone.
In the aftermath of the assault on the Dreaming, the Kindly Ones delivered their judgement, their punishment - for spilling blood - and yet, Dream is gone... but not yet returned. Death does not understand why. Endless remain... and yet Dream... is just gone.
Only because the Kindly Ones did not take his life that day. No. It's not much of a punishment if it was what he craved most.
No, instead, they trap him in an unending nightmare - living the moment he killed his son over and over again. Until he breaks, until he begs, until the end of time - Dream doesn't know. He just knows there's no escape. There's no help coming. He's alone.
And every day that he kills his son - just to wash the blood away again and again... He desires for this to end, he would beg for death, he wallows in despair, and he worries he's becoming delirious. The touch of his siblings reside in him, but he accepts they will never come for him. He deserves this. It's his punishment.
His siblings don't care - he tells himself... unaware they don't even know he's alive, and if they did - none of them, not even Desire, would agree.

Hob Gadling doesn't intend to let this chance pass and with the help of the new King of the Dreaming he very much intends to resurrect Morpheus.
But this is only the beginning of his problems.

There was no love between them anymore. They were just two parents mourning their son. But as Calliope decides to stay in the Dreaming for a bit longer, she realizes just how much Morpheus has changed. A tiny ember inside her begins to spark to life once more.

She reaches him before his knees hit the ground, wrapping her arms around him to stop his fall. She sets her feet shoulder-width apart to steady herself, bracing herself to receive him. He isn’t expecting it, she realizes, for he stiffens and pushes back as if to recoil…as if already he is trying, again, to push her away.
“Lord Morpheus, forgive me,” Lucienne whispers into his ear. “I will not watch you fall to pieces before my eyes. Not if I can help it.” She does not move, holding her ground.

Les Infinis n'ont pas de corps à proprement parler, ils ne subissent pas l'épreuve du Temps. Et pourtant à cet instant, elle aurait juré qu'il n'a jamais fait aussi vieux. Usé par le Temps, la Nuit et le Destin. Les milliers d'étoiles autrefois présentes dans ses yeux se sont muet en un ciel vide, dénué de lumière et de chaleur.

Then they felt it: a familiar taste of desire that echoed out from a certain helm.AKA Desire is not handing the change from Morpheus to Daniel in Dream well, gets on their father’s last nerve, and winds up about a century or so in the past where their dear older brother is alive (though imprisoned). Chaos ensues.
