With a small burst of Qi, the candles flicker and blow out. Lan Wangji sits there for a while, debating whether he should sleep on the floor or not. After a while, he pulls himself into the thin blanket — that Wei Wuxian had disregarded — and faces himself away from Wei Wuxian.
This was going to be an overwhelming period.
As soon as he starts to fall asleep, he felt a hand reach for his waist, before an arm wraps itself around it. Lan Wangji's eyes widen, and he shivers slightly as Wei Wuxian unintentionally presses his body against his back.
"Mnn..." Lan Wangji squirms, but couldn't dare but lift a finger. He sat there for a few minutes, the feeling of Wei Wuxian's heartbeat soothing his fleeting, absurd thoughts, before he drifts to sleep. He had never slept any better before. And definitely not in someone's arms.

It starts with Lan Wangji holding a whip in the snow.
Of a determination Lan Qiren sees on his face. An expression he knows all too well. Lan Qiren’s threat won't stop him. It’s barely made him pause. The boy doesn't sit in repentance, but in relief. There is a confident, defiant warmth in his eyes which seems to melt the snow around him and set the whip ablaze upon his palms.
His nephew would disobey him. Of this, Qiren is sure.
He would find a way to return to that demon which ensnared him; and perhaps next time he goes, he would not get him back. Either that demon kills him, or ensnares him into his wicked ways.
Lan Qiren would not stand for it. Something had to be done...before it was too late. Too late to save Wangji... Too late to save his clan from the slow encroach of evil which that demon has wrought upon their world.
He would not stand by again and let another Wen sect rise up and claim the lives of the ones he loved. He would not repeat his mistake again.
This time, it will be he who acts first.

Many whom he loved, and even more whom he himself delivered to the cold embrace of death. Some in vengeance, some in self preservation, most however, in vain madness and loss of control. And in that all, there was but one thing he felt. Well, perhaps two: regret and relief.
The question remained however, where he was and what was happening, why was he up from his slumber, how was he awakened.

When Lan Qiren received his binding silks, he hadn’t expected to. Not that he’d never expected to be chosen by an omega—he’d had a few hopes in his younger years—but as time went by, the omegas doing the choosing grew younger and younger in comparison to himself, and they still had plentiful options amongst their peers. Moreover, he did not know the omega who had ostensibly gifted him the simple, functional silk along with a few other assets. At least, not on a personal level, not more than anyone else. He knew well enough about her, though, from his brother’s words and the information swirling through the Lan elders faster than it had any right to.
Wu Xiuying had murdered a Lan elder. Lan Junmao had mated and married her before justice could be carried out.

In a universe where things went very differently at the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian and most of the Wen Remnants survived. Meanwhile, Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao were exposed building a secret force of demonic cultivators, with violent results.
‘The Rite at Qiongqi Path’ refers to Jin Guangyao’s desperate, failed, fatal attempt at ascending to ultimate power via demonic cultivation. In this 'verse, that turning point effectively takes the place of several canon confrontations.
A year later, Lan Xichen, Lan Wangji, and Wei Wuxian face some of the long-term consequences.
