Summary
Backlit by the cave’s entrance, his face is mostly in shadow, but Grantaire can just make out the white of his teeth, lips set in a terrible smile. Even in the dark, his eyes glint with mirth.
It’s an expression of pure, cruel glee. It twists his beloved face into something strange and chilling and wrong.
Grantaire doesn’t even have time to process, frozen for one second, one precious second that leaves Enjolras enough time to pull his leg back and drive it into Grantaire’s stomach. Grantaire wheezes, the wind whooshing out of him. His head spins, and his lungs burn, and his stomach aches, but through the haze of sudden pain and confusion, he manages one coherent thought:
Enjolras is capable of many, many things, but hurting his friends like this simply isn’t one of them. Grantaire is perhaps not his favorite person sometimes, but—he wouldn’t. Not even when they’ve fought. Enjolras wouldn’t.
Which means it isn’t him. It can’t be.
This isn’t Enjolras.

Summary
Into the smoke and general hum of the Richefeu smoking-room, there entered a sudden and cutting presence. A young man, with curling gold hair and a sharp and dreadful eye was gazing through the room with folded arms. It was Enjolras. Having taken it upon himself to check on his one so called lieutenant he did not trust, he found himself now listening to a churlish dialogue between two men over a lost game of dominos.
In the immediate aftermath of Enjolras and his Lieutenants, Enjolras takes Grantaire from his game to express his disdain. It seems there is more than that to express.

— Grantaire ? s’exclama-t-il, la surprise rendant sa voix peut-être trop forte pour le petit espace.
L’interjection surprit l’autre dans sa descente hâtive, son pied glissa et manqua l’envoyer au rez-de-chaussée plus rapidement qu’à son intention. La confusion de Grantaire était évidente tandis qu’il se redressait.
— Apollon ?
Il retira sa casquette comme si Enjolras était un maître d’école susceptible de le punir pour l’avoir gardée. L’humeur de ce dernier se gâta quelque peu en entendant le sobriquet.
— Mais que fais-tu ici ? poursuivit Grantaire.

For all Grantaire knows, Enjolras might have just used it as an excuse to avoid him as much as possible. But the reasonable part of Grantaire’s brain —it’s small, granted, but it surprisingly exists— reminds him that this isn’t Enjolras’ brand. Enjolras doesn’t ignore problems. He fucks them into leaving him alone, apparently, and only shoots short, perfunctory texts for the following weeks to make sure that their carpooling plans still stand."
After spending what Grantaire believes to be their first and last night together, Grantaire and Enjolras have to carpool together for a few hours. The tension comes to a head with unexpected outcomes.
