For some time after sending Belby skittering, pale-faced, from the classroom, Severus sits motionless at his desk. He’s staring straight ahead unseeingly, still trying in vain to pierce the veil of the past.
It’s not unusual for him to slip back into memories of his youth, forced as he is to still live in this accursed castle and walk the same familiar corridors. Sometimes he even finds himself unconsciously tracing the path to the Slytherin common room, as though he’ll find his dormitory exactly as he left it in 1978.
But as crisply as he remembers those years, there’s a single stormy night he can recall only as if staring at the memory through a foggy window. Trying to bring it into focus is a fool’s errand, like holding desperately onto the last moments of an ephemeral morning dream.
The night of 23 May 1967, Remus Lupin promised himself as he lay in agony that he would never, never do what his father had done. He would bury his secret deep down inside so it couldn't hurt anyone ever again. That was always the plan, anyway. He just hadn't counted on so many people taking such an interest.
