Summary
Dorian is used to being a secret: a hand under the table, a sly smile, an alcove tryst. It's a funny thing, then, when the most secretive man he's ever met — Inquisitor Renan Lavellan, a cagey Elf that frowns when you so much as ask whether he enjoyed dinner — resolutely refuses to hide him, unconcerned with how their friendship might impact his image.
Renan, on the other hand, is used to going unnoticed: a cloak in an alley, a healer in the forest, and now, a polite inquisitor in Chantry finery. It's a deeply unsettling thing, then, when the most ostentatious man he's ever met — Dorian Pavus, a proud Tevinter mage that not only brightens but commands every space he enters — sees through the regalia and into the core of him. Even worse, seems to like what he finds there.
They both see it for what it is: an impending disaster. And yet...

He was not afraid when he fought Duels in the Coloseum, he was not even afraid when his Father tried to change him or when he planned his inevitable dashing escape so as to not marry Livia Herathinos, nor when he was alone and miserable for weeks before his kidnapping, and he was espescially not afraid now, in the custody of his kidnappers who will inevidably sell him back to his Father.

Though the song he sang was unfamiliar, it carried a sense of nostalgia, as Solas’s fingers traced gentle patterns along her back, mirroring its rhythm.
Only once her heartbeat slowed to match his did Solas’s voice fade into a soft sigh, his lips curving into a contented smile.
“I’ve never heard that tune before," Ellana murmured. "What is it about?”
A glint of mischief accompanied his reply. “An old song I learned in the Fade about Fen’Harel and his lady love.”
She laughed. “Fen’harel hunts alone, Solas. He doesn’t have a lover.”
“Oh, yes he does.” He kissed her, his breath fanning out over her skin. “In this tune, he does.”

Since becoming the leader of the Inquisition, Inquisitor Daelyn Lavellan has dealt with all manner of circumstances. She'd faced darkspawn, red templars, demons, and fae. Each vying to sink either teeth or sword into her flesh to see her bleed. But darkspawn and red templars were predictable. She knew what they wanted and knew how they operated. Even outside the battlefield she found ways beneath the masks of both ally and foe. She could hold her own during the occasional political intrigue and underhanded scheming that others pulled her into. Much in part, thanks to Josephine. What she couldn't predict or anticipate was the whims of her own clan. That much had become clear.
*This is a test scene I wrote to go along with a larger story set within Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's been sitting in my files for quite some time, and I felt I should post it to gauge interest and to let it breathe a bit. *
