John forces Dean to join Sam at Stanford. He signs him up for all the courses he needs to take over Winchester Enterprises, or W.E. Dean decides to show John how much he doesn't need school to take over the family business by flunking all his classes. he barely attends any of them, to begin with.
That is until his professor, Castiel Novak, catches his eye. he can't stop fantasising about the professor, so he attends all of his lectures. Then Castiel lets him know how little he appreciates Dean's 'efforts' in his lessons.
or, Castiel is Dean's university professor and punishes Dean when he purposefully gets bad grades in his course. It does reflect on his teaching abilities, after all.
