Summary
It's funny, how time will change you. It will twist and twist and remove everything you thought you were, and then confront you with the same person you've always been.
It goes like this:
Jiang Yanli is weak from childbirth only a month prior to this, and once again she curses herself for not being able to run. She had made peace with it once, when she was young and her strengths could be used elsewhere. She had made peace with it even as her brothers left her behind, over and over again, through no fault of their own. She had even made peace with it when war had broken out, after her parents had burned and her sect torn apart, a-Cheng thrust into a role he barely recognised, a-Xian eyes haunted like a dead man walking.
With peace comes power - it would not survive without it. She wonders why it's never mentioned.
Or: Jiang Yanli walks onto the battlefied at Nightless City determined to stop losing her family. She doesn't walk back out.
