Summary
Chase hesitates for a long moment before raising his hand to the door. He knocks once, twice, and waits, unsure what emotion swirls in his chest.
For a moment it is simply quiet.
Then a thin, raspy, “Come in.” answers him.
Chase takes a calming breath, in and out. He pushes the door open and lets the soft wash of light carry him in.
The Queen is resting on her sickbed, surrounded by shadows, with only the light of a small lamp hanging above her head. It casts her in gentle spotlight, like a lantern sunk in a deep ocean. When she sees him, her eyes widen slightly and a small smile spreads across her lips.
“Hello darling.”

Spurred on by a sleepless night, Chase goes on a solo adventure into a book. It seems like the standard fairytale of a princess looking after her kingdom, but... Buddy is nowhere to found and family responsibilities soon start piling on the princess' shoulders.

“We can change the circumstances.” Chase protested, pulling at one of his arms.
“No we can’t!” Buddy shouted and pulled his arm away, making Chase flinch. “I-I’m sorry. Things like this,” He gestured at Chase. “just prove it’s not going to work out. I’m only going to hurt you.”

He smirked, pinching the skin of a blessedly unmarred cheek, "Some of us actually think before we act, little brat."
"Hey --"
"There were pros and cons," he mused, pretending to weigh on them like there was ever any other option than saving him, "pros involved me getting to kill the bastard who ever dared to lay his filthy hands on you."
He leaned in close, the air tickling the curve of Chase's ear. "Cons were that I wasn't able to make it last."

Buddy had messed up. Their last story had been a complete failure, and now their guardian Clumby Clumbernut was mad enough to enact the ultimate punishment. They didn’t know what it was, but they knew it couldn’t be good. The night before their future would have been decided, they received mail from their idol, Elizabert Megafig, asking them to come to Snaktooth Island to get the story of Bugsax. Now that their only hope was this story, they headed to the island unknowing to the adventure in front of them. And to the fact they would finally gain an actual family instead of just a story.
