«But it's prom night!»
«I'm not going to attend a stupid dance for as many stupid social conventions.»
Jon slapped a hand to his face, sighing. They were seniors in high school, and prom was an event of such importance that even the unsociable Damian Wayne, usually indifferent to normal school activities, would have to give in to social pressure. Yet, even though Jon was trying his best to convince him, he just wouldn't hear of it. -

Summary
Damian had always been sure that being trained by the League of Assassins would prepare him for whatever challenges would come his way. As much as he'd reevaluated their methods and realized he'd been manipulated from an early age, being able to rely on those skills had always helped him with his life as a vigilante, even when it made him too snooty and irritating to everyone around him. He'd learned over time to be more open, more spontaneous, to feel empathy and understand how much his words hurt, but he'd never thought that some words could really weigh much more than others. And the League could never have prepared him for what had come from his own lips in that moment.

«Leave it to me, I'll take care of it. I've been trained to do anything.»
«Even fix a washing machine?»
«Mpf. This is a piece of cake for me,» Damian asserted, carefully sitting down in front of the open door to get the tools and get to work.
Jon, for his part, got up to stretch a bit, massaging his sore neck as he watched his husband fiddle with the washing machine in the exact same way he had. It was almost hypnotic to see the way that Damian, despite having his back to him, seemed focused on his work, so much so that Jon didn't even realize that a good fifteen minutes had passed and there was still nothing going on.Series

If Damian just thought about it, he almost didn't believe it. They'd discovered they were attracted to each other, dammit. And it had been that very night, complicit in the strangely romantic atmosphere - the beach, the fireworks, the distant voices of the party gradually fading away - that had enveloped them, that they had done it for the first time.

«What are you doing?»
«I wasn't sleepy, so I'm... looking at the stars,»
He looked so... absorbed. A corner of his mouth was contracted as if he were thinking of something to say, but didn't have the courage to utter a word; in his deep green eyes, Jon was sure, he could make out the myriad of bright dots that ran across the vault of heaven, and he thought himself lucky that Damian couldn't hear his actual heart rate. His heart had missed a beat, as if Damian had been an ethereal presence, and it was absurd to think so since it wasn't the first time he'd seen him under the rays of moonlight. Oh, jeez. -

Bruce tousled his hair and sighed. He didn't remember it being this difficult to raise a teenager, but he'd been through it with his other sons and would have to get used to it by now. He tried to look for Damian again - if only he hadn't left for London to visit his daughter, he would have asked Alfred to give him a hand, certain that he wouldn't have been able to escape from the good old butler - resisting the urge to call Dick to know if he had run away to Blüdhaven, but when he returned to his study... he was astonished to see an easel right in the middle of the room, covered by a white sheet whose edges moved lazily in the weak breeze coming in through the window.

Damian frowns and continues to absent-mindedly look at himself in the bathroom mirror of the Kent farmhouse, while wondering what he was thinking.
He wore those stupid glasses by accident, maybe even for his own abstruse and ignoble amusement, but he can't really explain why he didn't appropriate Conner's glasses - from a certain point of view definitely cooler, as Drake would say - and instead he took the ones belonging to Jonathan, who certainly doesn't have a great taste in clothes or accessories. -

Summary
It's stupid, probably. Years ago he would have looked at himself with dissent and wrinkled his nose at the mere thought of having gone soft, but a little voice inside him quickly admonishes him and reminds him that his isn't weakness, it's strength. He has learned to trust people, not to consider everyone an enemy or just a pawn to get to power; he has understood that not everything has always been due to him and that his value should not be proved by fighting, and that feeling empathy for others does not mean trampling on one's own ideals. And being there with Jon, after all he's been through, is something he wouldn't change for the world.

Summary
Jon slips the fingers of both hands through his hair and squeezes the strands so tightly that he feels pain in his scalp, but he doesn't care. It was a nightmare and it has to stay that way, 'cause he doesn't want to remember those things or think about them. He wants to remember the time before, the moments when everything seemed easier, when those long nights on patrol had nothing to offer but hugs and kisses stolen secretly under a cowl, and it's by tuning in to this that little by little his breath returns and the anxiety slips away again, far away, into a corner of his mind that he closes tightly behind him.

Jon had immediately crushed that idea and he had reminded him not only that he could fly, but that he owned the jeep his parents had given him two years before, laughing at the muttering Damian had let escape when he had told him that his father had always courted the women he dated in that way; Jon had pointed out that it was better not to follow Bruce Wayne's methods and then he had kissed him, managing to make Damian calm down with the gifts in the following months... mainly 'cause Conner, who had visited him at the apartment, one night came up with the story that Damian was practically his sugar daddy.

Damn. He was the son of Batman and Talia Al Ghul, the heir to the mantle of the bat, the one that the League of Assassins had called Ibn al Xu'ffasch for years and blah blah blah... he couldn't really find such a thing frightening. He had been through the toughest trials, assassins, monsters, space travel alone and in company and even death itself, could it be that at fifteen he was afraid to simply talk about his feelings? It was easy. All he had to do was go downstairs, greet everyone as usual, start eating and then, at the fateful moment of thanks during dinner, throw in a few tearful words and say he was grateful for the family he had and that had accepted him as he was, also talk about his coming out and waiting for the reaction. Easy, indeed.

Summary
The problem was beginning to arise during the missions Jon attended in his company, as his son, from the height of his fifteen years, had begun to feel capable of doing anything. He had heard that boys at that age felt invincible, but Jon, also 'cause he was half Kryptonian, had taken those words a little too literally. So Clark was forced several times to keep him or to prevent him from throwing himself headlong into the most disparate actions, curbing his enthusiasm when he seemed to be exaggerating a bit too much.
«You and I need to talk, kiddo,» he stated in a colorless tone, mostly 'cause of the way his son was carefully avoiding his gaze.
«There's nothing to talk about» -

«Yes, I know what I said, thanks.» Damian flipped his hair back, showing off the cut on his forehead he'd gotten the previous day when he'd gone on patrol with his father. «But my arm still hurts from yesterday's fall, I couldn't let you get the most out of it.» Before Jon could retort, Damian lifted a hand to stop him. «So we're going to use this afternoon for something differently constructive.»
«And that something differently constructive has nothing to do with a nice afternoon nap, I suppose,» Jon chuckled, and Damian glared at him.
«Don't be stupid, Jonathan,» he retorted dismissively, wrinkling his nose. «I'm not going to waste my time sleeping. But I can give you a Netflix and Chill session.» -

Years ago, he would never have believed he could live that life, living in a country house and taking care of a vet clinic, and yet, a full fifteen years later, he wouldn't have changed one iota about the way things had gone. He would have been lying if he had said that from day one it had been easy, that they had both adjusted in the blink of an eye and that life in the country had been a piece of cake, but they had gone through it together. Seeing the sun beating against the farm walls, the wind blowing through that golden sea of corn, and the teeming life of their animals, managed to soothe Damian's heart even after so many years.

It should have been illegal to be so... so... beautiful, dammit. Ever since Damian had been exposed to Ivy's mixture and gotten that flowing hair, Jon had begun to think that he might as well get used to seeing him in a tail all the time, with his hair loose behind his back or even just draped over one shoulder, but Damian hated it. He had never been fond of wearing his hair long - Mr. Pennyworth, when he was in charge of his hairdo, always good - naturedly teased him about wanting to enlist in the Marines - and he cut it so short as soon as he got the chance, that Jon often felt the nape of his neck underneath and only a few sparse hairs tickling his fingertips; he, on the other hand, had never been so displeased with wearing longer hair, but seeing Damian was a whole different kettle of fish.
«...are you listening to me?»

“The person you are trying to call is unavailable. Please...”
Damian wouldn't have wanted to be paranoid, really. He wouldn't even have wanted to call Dylan's mother, yet he did and his heart leapt into his throat when the woman, in a frowning tone, replied with a «Thomas' not back yet? He left half an hour ago.»
The weight of the world collapsed on Damian trembled on his shaky leg, having to force himself to support himself solely and only on his prosthesis as he heard the woman's voice on the receiver, but he could no longer understand a single word.Series
