The day Arthur dies is the day Merlin refuses to let end. Again. And again. And again. Merlin’s stuck in a spiral—a dizzying, cruel dance of death and reset. With each attempt, his heart grows heavier, his magic darker, until all he can do is break.
And when the shards of his despair drag Arthur into the storm, the past and present shatter, leaving nothing but raw truth and fragile hope.

Merlin doesn't want Arthur to die. Not at Camlann, not in his lifetime, not if he can prevent it. He knows what Mordred will do. Knows that as soon as Kara refused to withdraw her support of Morgana, that her death would send the young Druid-turned-Knight, straight to the High Priestess. So he makes a decision. If he must sacrifice his life, he will do so with a clear mind and conscience.
He talks with Arthur and Gwen.
He talks to Gwaine.
Then he meets the Disir and chooses his path.
It is time he chose a side.

“Merlin, forgive me.”
Merlin felt a tug of emotion in his chest at Arthur’s words and opened his eyes, inadvertently looking up at the crystals once again before feeling the breath get knocked out of him as he processed what the crystals were now showing.
“Arthur… Forgive me.”
“What do you mean?” Arthur asked, confused. Gripping Merlin’s arm, he tried to pull his manservant to face him and in his shock at what he was seeing, Merlin let him, “Merlin, what’s wro-”
Merlin was facing Arthur. Arthur was staring at him, horror spreading across his face like a wine stain.
Merlin’s eyes. Arthur had seen his eyes.
A reimagination of Merlin’s time in the Crystal Cave getting his magic back before the battle of Camlann. Because there’s no way that Arthur would be able to keep his nose out of Merlin’s business long enough to let him ride off into the woods alone with Gwaine right before a big ass battle. A one-shot magic reveal.

Eventually, Britain without enough stability will possibly fall again, with former men under her betraying her and her own flesh and blood behind it and giving the finishing blow that will end her life, but it's okay. Artorius will fulfill the destiny that awaits the man who manages to free Excalibur, even when the magus asks her once more to rethink her decision.
“Many people were smiling”—she flashes a small smile to the magician before turning back to the confined longsword—“I do not believe it will be a mistake.”
With a determined face, Artorius grips the handle of the sword as hard as she can and pulls it completely out of the boulder that trapped it, the weapon as light as a feather as she does so.
It might've been a naive decision given the tragedies that will fall upon her, but it's okay in her eyes—
That is the type of sacrifice a true king must make to ensure the protection of their people.
