And Merlin? He realizes he's gonna have to wait again. But what is a few months, when it's nothing compared to fifteen hundred years? -

For one amber moment, Merlin forgets that he carries all the wonders of the world on his back. His shoulders slacken at the sight of something as weightless as a beam of light, and the atlas tilts ever so slightly out of its orbit. He realises then, with great urgency, how rare and precious it is to be safe, and to be bored, and to have indoor plumbing– which is at the moment unrelated, but always worth mentioning.
Slightly mad with the sudden rush of joy, he feels so acutely aware of the life inside his body that he doesn't know what to do with it next. He asks the Universe, but it doesn't answer, that wanker. It never does.
Arthur returns. This solves the oldest of Merlin's problems, but simultaneously creates a lot of new ones.

There had been signs of course. When your existence has been foretold for generations, there tends to be signs. Although, aside from his undeniable immortality, Merlin hadn’t felt like he was living in a legend for quite some time.
It's 2020, and even after over a thousand years, Merlin still hasn't given up waiting for his King to return. And, with the help of a well-known (apparently Albion-threatening) pandemic, his vigilance is about to be rewarded.

There was a lot Arthur loved about living in Boscastle with Merlin, but it was spoilt slightly by the fact that modern life was out to get him, and the people in the village kept looking at him very strangely indeed.
As for his neighbour, Mrs Arbuthnot, he would probably be avoiding her entirely if her biscuits weren't so damn delicious...

But prophecies are fickle, and without a when or where for Merlin to go off of, when Arthur finally awakens, he is not there to meet him. Instead, Arthur is met with a gregarious young girl named Eleanor who, alongside her loyal dog Cavall, does her best to acclimate Arthur to the modern world and reunite him with his useless manservant. As soon as she's convinced he's not just a historical reenactor who hit his head, anyway.

Nowadays, Arthur’s and Merlin’s stories are more or less well-known. But not Burith’s. Burith erased themself for the narrative. So it is time to tell their story. And to tell how they were here all along. For Merlin. Waiting for Arthur.
Because Arthur will come back. One day. And when he will, it’s gonna be wonderful, right?
Or it’ll be absolute chaos of sentiments. Who knows?
