Well, he supposed he had promised his uncle that he wouldn't use the crystal. He'd made no such promise about Alistair. Even though if he had the capability to cast Detect Creature, he absolutely would have grabbed the crystal from Alistair's hands and cast the spell himself to save time, but as it was, he hadn't broken his promise... technically.
