Like their name implies, aberrations tend to not follow the rules of the Material Plane, including a certain mind flayer with an existential case of partialism. Same goes with the fey, or to an extent, a tiefling raised in the Feywild with aspirations of becoming an archfey.
Alternatively, a story where two strange people begin a tug of war throughout the events of Baldur’s Gate III, only to get caught up in mutual pining, mind games, and (mostly) ethical meet-cutes.

Ansur and Balduran were more than friends, that much was plain to see. They could never be truly separated, they were partners until the very end.
Their crewmates would often gossip about the true nature of their connection, and most were convinced that they were secret lovers. But their relationship was not sexual, no, they were but very close friends. At some point, they had managed to convince not just their companions of this, but also themselves.

This story is a Baldur's Gate 3 prequel that wonders about Ansur and the mind flayer that would be called the Emperor. How did their relationship deteriorate? Was it purely due to Balduran's ceremorphosis, or did it just make them both re-evaluate who they thought the other person was? In considering those questions, this fic theorizes about who and what is/isn't remembered in legends, the value of treasure and wealth, the power of a broken oath, what it means to be "worthy," and whether being considered "worthy" is really worth anything at all.
