Xie Lian lives for the moments before dawn, when the world is just waking up, when the silence of the night gives way to life and the darkness doesn’t feel quite so forbidding anymore. Somehow in the night, Hua Cheng had tucked himself into Xie Lian’s side, cramped comically into the space just under his armpit like a child. An arm had been thrown haphazardly over Xie Lian’s chest, and for once, he let himself lie under the grounding weight of it.
Neither of them needed to breathe, not really, but beside him, Hua Cheng’s chest still rose and fell, as if they were just two young men rather than the fathomlessly old beings they both were. It was the only sound in the room for a long time, before slowly, like the coming of spring, droplets of rain began to shower down outside. Xie Lian sighed, languoring in the heaviness of his limbs in the dark pre-dawn. Here, now, no one needed him. He had no prayers to answer, no voices calling for his attention. It was nice.
