Comment on Bight the Hand that Feeds You

  1. Elizabeth Bennet "Pride and Prejudice"

Blech - Brock is such an asshole! And not just to Bucky. That opening scene was so hot except for the multiple(!) times Brock just fully treated Bucky like shit. Excellent example of bad Brock is at this (ignorant selfishness or predatory selfishness - I'm still trying to figure it out; though that later comment about finding the perfect sub and getting out and his discouraging Bucky from doing his own research has me worriedly suspicious) and it's just sad that Bucky is having to grasp at these scraps...

I'm even more worried about Bucky seeing how his family is unintentionally not a great support system. You do a great job of walking that fine line of his mom and dad being good people but they're not handling Bucky's disability well at all. Which only exasperates his depression and low self-worth... And if Brock is a predator, they've practically gift-wrapped Bucky for him.

It just occurred to me, I'm betting Bucky moved out of his parents' place and into Brock's. Oh, crap, if Bucky doesn't feel he's safe to live on his own - that's going to make leaving Brock that much harder! Especially if his parents think Brock is a great guy would they help Bucky move out? I'm glad at least Becca is seeing some of the red flags but if she's away and if their mom and dad dismiss her input because they think she's a kid... But making the choice to jump - if Bucky is in a place where he cannot safely live on his own... He's obviously still dealing with very real, debilitating injuries but he's also apparently very defensive about getting the kind of support that might be out there.

And Brock has that much control of Bucky's money... The klaxons are only getting louder. (I adore how you placed that info within a sweet domestic scene where everything seems warm and soft and cuddly, it makes the cognitive dissonance that much more distressing. Like a snake in doll house.)

I'm thrilled Sarah is in this story, by the way! One of my favorite parts of Falcon and the Winter Solider was Sarah's introduction. But, goddamnit, of course Brock is a well respected, helpful figure at the VA. Sam would be someone I'd expect to see some warning signs and help Bucky realize he deserves more, might even be in an unsafe relationship. But if Sam thinks Brock is a good guy, that might make a blind spot... Gah! I'm so worried! (And I'm loving it.)

    1. Aah! All these comments were such a treat to get one after the other - sorry it took so long to reply!

Whoooo knows? Can a clear distinction be made? To what extent is Brock intentionally doing any of the things he does? To what extent does any abuser? The THEMES we will explore

Yeah, Bucky's family is absolutely not a great support system. They love him! But that is very much not enough here, which I'm glad to see comes through!

I am glad the klaxons are blaring!!! Yeah, he does not think he can safely live on his own. And like, he is not unreasonable to think that! And the money situation is not ideal (but dealing with money is hard - would Bucky be able to deal with his own finances?? Hard to say!)

Really glad so much is coming through and that you're enjoying the story!
