Anders already resigned to the fact that he couldn't allow himself Hawke. How could he use this as a wedge with Fenris? Varric would only tell this story if it ended well, at least to Cassandra anyways, he couldn't betray Hawke like that. That being said, perhaps that's why this story was never told?

Point out he only went with it to please his new lover. That Fenris sees nothing in grinding her feelings toward the subject underfoot in an attempt to make Isabella happy. The fact that he's actually TRYING with Isabella where he wouldn't even try for Hawke. And regardless of weather or not he could ever have her Anders will never believe Fenris is good for her. He's still convinced it will be Fenris to turn on them all. Anders doesn't see himself as a monster. He knows enough to feel deep inside that they will be betrayed. It's like the fully human piece of him screaming that it's coming. But he won't believe it's his doing. Until he lights the fuze he believes it will be Fenris to turn and destroy them all. And Varric may never tell. Think of him like your smart phone. When you first get it it says. "Did you mean August?" And your like no I meant Anders. Six months down the road you type Sebastian and it suggests Vael instead of Bach. Each little thing. Each emotion or drunken mutter. Varric soaks it in. He look's at a Tapestry of Hawke's life and follows each string back seeing their roots and knowing the why. Varric is the truest friend in that he does nothing more than try to understand and comes closer than should be possible. Varric want's Hawke to worry less so he doesn't ask 'what can I do?' He sends a message to the Coterie to leave the Clinic alone. He makes Merrill leave the house. Ever wonder how letters got smuggled to Bethany in the Circle. Or how Carver kept making it back from the Wardens just so perfectly timed when Hawke needed him (Mark of the Assassin, Legacy, End Game) Varric soaks it all in and just does. He knows what she needs because he listens. To quote Keeper Marethari, "I listened, To the wind, to the birds as the hunters do. To my dreams. I watched the stars. There is great wisdom to be found all around us if you know how to listen for it." Only Varric listens to sighs and winces. To the way one shys or leans. Varric watches the unspoken emotions and weather you get angry or laugh at a particular rumor. Varric has something much more powerful than the stone sense of the Dwarves or the earth sense of the Dalish. Varric has people sense. He made Hawke a promise in the first thing he ever said to her "Varric Tethras. At your service." And he has remained so everyday since. Whooo Little long winded lol I'm in chapter writing mode lols

lol And yeah that would be a great reason why this story was never told. Even if it was just that Hawke only walked away with enough hope to wait. It still breaks her heart to be so close yet so far.

She takes what she can get. And hope that he doesn't hate her is enough. She would settle for friendship I think. Just to know that even if she is not allowed to love him he will allow her to protect him. Something she couldn't give Bethany or Carver or Mother maybe he'll let her try with him. Your Hawke only knows one way to love, with her whole being. It's not going to stop just because he doesn't love her back. Hell Carver was a "a bit of a tit" but she'd burn all of Ferelden to keep him alive.
I don't think Isabella and Fenris would ever work, he'd be too protective - or maybe with his background being in an open relationship would make him happier, keeping away from any restrictions and confinement ?? - I wish Anders and Fenris would have fought in game, or in Inquisition, that would have been amazing. Great description of Varric. And that's fine, I love it, it's super amazing that you're commenting at all.

Canonically Fenris and Isabella do get together if Hawke does not romance either. So yes they would work. Think of it this way. Peanut butter and Jelly is awesome. But Peanut Butter and Chocolate is good enough to kill for. Also just because you loved and lost does not mean you will never love again. Say you meet your one true love. It's amazing and beautiful and you never again feel whole after they are gone. But life is messy and terrible and sometimes things end before their time. You learn to love again. Maybe not as deeply and there is a piece of your heart you will never give another. There is a part of you that will never belong to another. Love like Fenris had with Hawke would have made him see places he did not know were empty inside of him. He is starving for love and even if its not the same its enough to keep the cold out of his soul.
