Comment on Seven Nation Army

  1. Alright, last night I kept quiet on this review and the drama that ensued afterwards. You claim you want to be an objective critic and give out proper and the best possible reviews. As a reviewer and doing reports a majority of my life on such things, you really have a lot to learn about being a critic. Even if you are displeased with something, you should never be disrespectful. You can give an honest opinion, but there is a certain form of etiquette you lack. One does not say "Hell no" when not recommending a piece. Whether it be a piece of fiction, music or movie...etc. That is childish and immature. The proper thing would have been to say. "In my opinion, I cannot recommend this piece of fanfiction. However if the subject matter provided in the summary is to your liking, by all means give this piece a read over. I shall not be continuing as I found the story not to my liking."

Also as a critic you strive to point out a positive point, even if you think the whole thing is rubbish. You are a critic, you are giving out your opinion, but not everyone will share your taste. So it is your job to say things such as, "Despite the lack of this or where I did not enjoy that".

You can nit pick, but be aware fanfiction does not process through a professional editor. Partners work together to catch errors. Some of us have beta readers, who try to catch them as well. We are human. We are not infallible. Even publishers miss things. I cannot tell you how many times I have come across such things in published literature. It only becomes an issue, if the piece is illegible.

While I can appreciate your review, I also feel as a fellow reviewer, critic, that long progressive reviews should be sustained till the end of a piece. You make notes along the way and present the review after you have completed the piece you are going to review. A real critic does not pass judgement on the first chapter alone. They may give a preliminary critique, but you cannot justify an honest critique if you have not read the complete work. Essentially what you have accomplished, is judging a book by its cover. And that my friend is very disrespectful and very unprofessional.

So in closing, as I have rambled long enough on this subject, go back to school, (I refer to college if you have graduated high school or the equivalent) and learn how to present a real critique or review, before you get your foot caught in the mud again. And do not assume someone is being sarcastic. It is very unbecoming of you to make assumptions of someone you know nothing about.
