Too quiet

Summary:

This wasn't the first time this had happened. But it was the first time it had happened in such a large scale.
He was used to bloodshed. But not the loss of an innocent in this manner.

He had forgotten but as the familiar feeling returned once more, so did it.
And now he's scared. At himself and everyone else.

Notes:

Hey! This is my second fic ever published here on this platform but you won’t find my very first work since I’ve deleted it out of sheer embarrassment lol
But I have had the courage to post once more and hopefully not end up deleting it within the span of a few days lol but don’t worry there will be more but I have no idea how to make it say there will be more than one chapter
Anyways since I’m still new to this whole writings thingy I appreciate any and all feedback back!
Without further ado please enjoy my probably crappy fic and forgive any spelling errors for the time being XD

Chapter 1: It was supposed to be a quiet night…

Chapter Text

Things were finally calm in Nod-Krai once more. Well… not really. Even after Rerir disappeared, the wild hunt still persisted. Besides you still had to keep an eye out for Varka anyways. So now adays you often spend time on your patrols when you’re not running dailies since visiting other nations at the moment would only cause more trouble than it’s worth considering an you might be missing when they need you most.

But with the dull ache in your head, it was getting a little harder each day. Yet, you persisted. After all, your friends needed you. You didn’t actually visit them much since you didn’t want to bother them but rather simply go around their territories. Besides you had your own way of checking up on them without burdening them.

The grass crunched under especially step you took despite the dull ache in your head. As you walked you could see the glow of the flowers in the Silver Moon Hall just around the corner. You didn’t know why you came but you did. Sometimes with Paimon but usually alone. Something about the Moon maiden just made you feel that weird feeling in your chest. You didn’t know how, why, when, or any of it, you just knew it did. You knew she had no place for someone like you because while, yes, you did help, you were still just a traveler. But as you reached the end and got a better look at the cavern inside better look, you saw the flowers were paler, almost white…

That couldn’t mean any good…

However you seemed calm even if your chest started to tighten and your head beaten a little faster every second. Your golden eyes scanned the valley of flowers until your eyes landed on a familiar sight.

There crouched to the right of the moon statues you saw the girl, her back faced to you. But you couldn’t miss her black-brown hair that faded into pink near the tips even if you tried.

But either way you approached her cautiously, weirdly calm in a situation you’d be panicking over had the setting been different but you didn’t know why.

You calmly but quietly walked up to the girl until you were next to her and crouched down yourself, then did she finally sensed you and turned her head ever so slightly. Feeling your chest squeeze a little, both at seeing how weak she was and for annoying her so often with your little visits.

“You’re… back…” The girl muttered weakly, the semi transparent veil seemingly keeping her eyes shut despite you knowing you she could open them if she truly wanted.

“The flowers are white.” You stated and gently took her hands into yours.

“Come. Rest while I make you something.” She didn’t argue at your proposal. Not that she even had the strength to in the first place at the moment, let alone stand up right. But you tried channeling some of the moon marrow’s powers onto her as you helped her up and causing the garden of white flowers to turn blue even if ever so slightly even if you already knew it’d be rejected. It’d have to do for now.

Helping her walk up the moons and let her sit you quietly walked back down and approached the cooking pot nearby. You were somewhat grateful your little hoarding habit paid off as you had plenty of ingredients.

Stirring the pot while the gravy simmered, the smell travelled all the way up to the Damselette. It wasn’t obvious but your hit sharpened senses picked up the girl sniffing the air and the very faint sound of her grumbling stomach.

However, you barely reacted this time as your mind wandered back to your second encounter with one another, back when the two of you were still acquaintances. Something similar had happened. But you were with Paimon and already had pre made meals you wanted to gift her.

But you didn’t let your mind linger too much and snapped yourself to reality by reminding yourself you were cooking and Columbina was not feeling alright, the last thing you wanted was for the food to get burnt or ruined because you weren’t paying attention anyways. Then again you doubted she’d like it much in the first place.

Finally after a few more moments, you poured the food into a small bowl and carried it all the way up to here before quietly handing it to her.

The goddess nodded as she carefully took the bowl from your hands before looking up at you once more. Her eyes were closed as always but you still felt as if she was staring right at you.

“You’ve been more reserved lately… is something the matter?” She finally speaking up, tilting her head slightly.

You knew she was right. And something was bothering you but you also didn’t want to burden her with unnecessary troubles you could handle on your own. Besides, you deserved it anyways. So you simply shook your head and smiled like usual but you both knew the other would buy it.

Though she decided to begin eating anyway, albeit a little reluctantly now.

You doubted she cared much for you and even if she did she shouldn’t since one day he’d end up leaving and if the two got too close by then she’d be hurt all over again. You didn’t even know why she tolerated you the first place or tried to keep you around with sweet words. After all, what good were you?

Though there was one thing you didn’t understand.

To Columbina, you were a friend. If anything you were the closet she had ever gotten simply because she was not something to be taken advantage of or worshipped and deemed perfect in your eyes. You often visited her and helped her out in any way you could and she in return would try to repay you with all sorts of gifts. But each time you adamantly refused, which always made her frown since she was literally hard wired to give back at this point. Because after learning of her past you realized she thought love was conditional and must be repaid to keep. So you felt bad letting her even think she needed to do anything in return. The only time you ever asked for something being when you tried to find more about your sibling. Even then you felt quite bad afterwards for days.

The flowers were now a brighter bluer color as some of the goddess’s strength returned. But sensing you were lost in thought once more, she set the now empty bowl down on the floor next to her feet and gently reached out, her hand landing on your cheek and causing you to snap back into reality once more.

“Something is in your mind.” she muttered, bringing your chin up a little to face her. You were sure you could almost feel here eyes soften the same way her words did if it weren’t for the fact her eyes were closed.

You stared back at her face which was now filled with a little worry but remained quiet. But not for the reasons she expected at first. You face felt all tingly and hot as her hand grazed against your face, her touch feather light. Something about it sparked something inside of him and now suddenly her face was the only thing in his mind.

No, no! Snap out of it damnit! You’re making her worry, you idiot! Don’t make her care for someone like you. You don’t even deserve it.

“It’s fine. I’m ok.” You said a bit too quickly on instinct as you pulled away once you finally regained your composure but she could sense your reluctance even if you tired to mask it and your face was dusted slightly pink.

Columbina’s brows furrowed but she didn’t speak when she retracted her hands too.

You ended up politely but firmly excusing yourself early that day and promptly exited out the cave entrance and made your back to the hotel where Paimon was probably waiting. But on your way out of the silver moon hall could swore you sensed the flowers shinning a little redder. But you chalked up to your imagination.

Chapter 2: Tired or numb? You didn’t know

Summary:

Whatever Aether is going through is getting worse and people started noticing.

Notes:

This doesn’t have much Columbina and Paimon actually talks here even if briefly but this is (hopefully) mostly going to be a fic about Aether’s well being with a side of Aetherbina or as I like to call them “Starlight” lol

Anyways please forgive if it feels rushed or something
I’m still figuring out the ropes of this place and how to do anything here XD
Also I know that 60 hits isn’t a lot but for me personally I am very grateful so thank you everyone and an extra thanks to everyone who gave me a Kudos because this is already more than I ever imagined
I wish you all the best!:)

Chapter Text

Just a few days ago, you were fine. Maybe minor cold but fine. You could smile, laugh and move around all you wanted without it hurting much.

However, you felt like absolute shit at the moment.

The afternoon sun’s rays poured through the window hitting your face and even your eyes, its orange-golden lights making your eyes shimmer like your hair, an image that would’ve made someone nosebleed. But no one was there to see it this time. At least not yet.

Had it been a normal day, you would’ve gotten up already and actually go out to do something other then lay around. And you would’ve too.

But you… you just felt… tired…

It felt like all the energy had been sucked out of your body as of late and it didn’t help with your sudden loss of appetite either. The eye bags around your eyes were not a very pretty sight either when you didn’t have a proper night of sleep in like… what? 2, 3 days? maybe more but you weren’t sure. And the ache in your head wasn’t a help either when it felt stronger than last time.

That should’ve been your first clue something was up. After all, you couldn’t remember the last time you were sick But you didn’t pay attention to your gut.

At this point the only thing getting you up at all were the dailies with how… empty things felt but even then you were getting sloppy and late. You hadn’t visited Columbina or the frost moon scions for 2 weeks now when you used to go every other day. Flins, bless his heart, didn’t seem to understand that he wasn’t mad or anything and tried to send apology gifts since you weren’t visiting him either. Meanwhile Aino and Ineffa sent little cakes, muffins or other pastries her constructs made.

At this point your whole pantry is stacked with fresh foods. Food you didn’t have the apetite for despite not eating all day. Not that it mattered since Paimon existed.

You sighed to yourself for what felt like the millionth time when you heard knocking coming from the door. Paimon must’ve been back from Flins from eating his pockets, literally. Pushing yourself up from bed with what felt like noddle arms you shuffle to the edge of the and finally let your feet hit the ground for once all day ever since you got back from Katherin.

Your eyes briefly caught the mountain of letters just piled up and collecting dust at your desk. Companions from your numerous adventures all wanting to check in. They were all just there, unopened. You already knew the contents. After all, you’ve been bailing on practically everyone these days. But every time you tried sitting down, your mind just went blank and you felt drained all over again.

But for now you pushed those thoughts to the back of your head and forced yourself to stand up and take a small step forward, then another, then another. You were already exhausted by the time you reached the door and finally opened it to see the white haired pixie.

“Aether!” The small girl suddenly jumped into your arms. “Paimon can’t decide if Flins is scary or cool! Paimon thinks she’ll be stuffed for days with how much he gave but the spirits gave me a scare way too many times for Paimon to think she’s safe anymore!” She ranted while you simply listened, unable to help but smile a little and hug her back, even if weakly. But you struggled to focus properly as the pain was starting to get a little over powering, casing you to rub your temples and grain slightly.

The small fairy tilted her head in response. As dense and oblivious as she was, even she wasn’t stupid to something as obvious as this.

“Aether…?” the fairy softly called out, her previous smile replaced with the same worried face everyone else was starting to give. “Sorry, Paimon, I’m not feeling very well right now.” your voice coming out weaker than intended, which caused the floating girl to furrow her brows. It honestly reminded you of Columbina before you excused yourself and left just 2 weeks prior.

“Hey, maybe you should stay in for a few days.” She suggested but you only gave a light hum as a response as you were already walking away before flopping into your shared bed. had this been any other time she would’ve huffed and puffed for being ignored. But now she wished Baizhu was here.

He was fine just a few days ago. He was even smiling and chuckling. How could a person suddenly be so happy, be so tired and weak in just a few weeks… had he gotten a cold? But Paimon thought outlanders like him didn’t get sick so easily

Yet here you were with a head that felt like it was about to explode.

Chapter Text

The world went dark once more.

You couldn’t feel, see, taste, hear, nothing. All your sense gone as whatever abyss or limbo you keep falling into whenever you ended up like this consumed you.

Or at least that’s what would’ve normally happened. This isn’t your first time here. Nor will it be your last considering everything that’s happening and will happen.

Even then you’re getting out of here soon as the most you’ve ever been here in the past is a few hours. At least you think so anyways since it’s not easy keeping track and remembering every second when you can’t even sense things let alone how much time passes.

The only reason you even know of the existence of whatever limbo you got thrown into again is because it was the only thing you remembered before you woke up from whatever death tried to claim you this time say for a few exceptions. The less time spent here, the more time passed in the real world.

You don’t even know why you end up here in the first place. But what ever the reason, today was different.

You didn’t die.

*You could feel.*

You were cold, hungry and your entire body was aching but you could actually move around. You didn’t want to considering how you body felt as if it were being repeatedly stabbed by a thousand burning hot needles, each digging into your skin more and more each time you moved.

But you weren’t attacked nor were you in any fight this time.

You opened you eyes, something you couldn’t do before, but it was so dark you might’ve just kept your eyes closed. You don’t even know how you ended up this time around, let alone what happened before or after that. One moment you were doing laying in bed about to sleep next to Paimon after taking your medicine and then the next thing you knew after your eyes felt too heavy to be kept open, you were now suddenly here. Floating for however long this place decided to keep you here for….

Despite the pain you forced yourself to sit up, only now did you notice you arms shaking. You couldn’t see. But you could feel.

“Do you blame yourself?” Turning around in instinct, you were about to summon your sword but stopped last minute, willing yourself to not attack. A habit you started picking up ever since the Damselette started sneaking up on you in her cavern before the sharp pain shot through your body once more, this time even worse.

“Argh-!” You breathing was now ragged, and you felt beads of sweat going down your forehead.

But you still couldn’t see. Yet, that voice felt so familiar. That soft voice of a small girl.

“W-Who are you…?” You managed to studder out through the pain.

The voice only hummed in response from what you could hear before speaking up once more - “It’s quite common for someone like you to feel a kind of… guilt in this situation…” she stated thoughtfully as if that explained anything.

“W-What situation…?” You raised you eyebrow.

***“*The Accident”**

Notes:

Will this chapter probably change? I might considering how short this is but I also might keep it so I'm not sure lol

Though for all the older readers here do know I changed a fair bit from the original
I'm not sure how any of you will react but I really hope no one is too disappointed. And in case you were wondering, yes there will still be (an attempt) at angst just later on to fit the story better as I take this more seriously

Also it took a lot more will power than I'd like not to delete this fic out of sheer embarrassment again like my first fic XD

Chapter 4: Fishing with Flins

Summary:

FLINS FINALLY APPEARES!!! But your pain is getting seemingly worse
(But Idk if I did a good job doing him lol)

Notes:

School is a pain in the ass but I'm trying to update at least daily if possible so don't mind if i miss a few days lol

Also while this isn't very angsty or smth yet
I am planning some very gory and angsty scenes later on but for now I didn't rate it much and labeled it as light angst

So take this as a warning that things WILL go down hill from here and will HEAVILY diverge from cannon lol
And as someone who isn't very experienced in both Gore and Angst please forgive I'm trying my best ;-;

Chapter Text

Shivering a little as you walked through the purple-ish blue field of the Final Night Cemetery.

Your headache felt a little better ever since that weird dream from last night. The only thing you remembered was voice mentioning some kind ‘accident’ before you woke up in a cold sweat. You got the feeling you know what it was about. Though you didn’t want to dwell on it much as the more you tried thinking about it the more the pain seemed to fester and your chest tightens.

You stared ahead blankly, not really paying attention like you were supposed to as the fairy next to you followed along. Then again you were almost done so you could crash in bed fairly soon if you weren’t interupted by a certain Pixie.

“Paimon still thinks you should’ve rested more instead of going out again.” The white haired pixie spoke up, suddenly bringing you out of your thoughts.

Turning your head towards Paimon, you simply smile- “I’m sorry but patrols aren’t exactly going to do themselves. What if Aino and Ineffa, the Scions or Flins need me?”

“Paimon knows Aino is a kid and all but Ineffa can take care of her, the Frost Moon Scions can hold up their own and they have Lauma’s blessing anyways and Flins is well… Flins!” she replied but you shook your head.

“I don’t want to risk it. Let’s just say I’ve learnt the hard way what happens when you don’t keep an eye.” that only made the girl tilt her head. “What does that mean…?”

You simply smile once more and kept on walking and earned a pout from her “Hey! Don’t ignore Paimon” She stomped the air though you didn’t look back while she tried hurrying next to you.

As the two of you patrolled however Paimon’s eyes managed to spot a familiar blue haired Ratnik at the bottom of a cliff near the shore and before you knew it, you were already being tugged at.

“Look! Look! He’s here! Let’s say hi!” She exclaimed before rush off.

“Hey wait up!” You tried you best to be a bit cautious as you ran down towards the shore and almost slipped a little trying to catch up. It would’ve been almost amusing to you how quickly the tables could turn like that if you weren’t more worried about catching up to her.

“Hello!” she waved when she approached the Ratnik while you were panting slightly from the unexpected jog.

“Huh?” Flins turned his head towards the noise and was pleasantly by the approaching of his two friends, not noticing the shadows disappearing deeper within the water. “Traveller, Paimon. I wasn’t Expecting any company at the moment.” Flins smiled though it did falter a little as he glance back at the waters and noted the now lack of shadows and ripples. “Though… do try to be a bit lighter on the noise next time we meet, if you wouldn’t mind” He sheepishly smiled.

Ah… Of course you just had to ruin his attempt at catching his food. Why in Celestia were you so pathetic!?!?

letting out a sigh, you honestly couldn’t tell if you wanted to punch yourself or Paimon more. Who are you even kidding, of course you wanted to punch yourself more.

“Oh, Paimon’s so sorry! Paimon didn’t mean to-” a soft chuckle escaped the blue haired fae’s lips as he cut the Pixie off. “It’s quite alright.”

He turned towards the now calmer waters, his gaze more thoughtful as he spoke “The fish here are used to the quiet, which make them very sensitive indeed to external noises.” He began, putting a hand up to his chin. “So, as well as treading, we ought to keep our voices down when we speak.” He turned his back to you once more before continuing- “I once tried fishing while two ghosts nearby were chatting incessantly. Didn’t get a single bite all day. So, Since then, I have resolved to greet any nearby ghosts and ask them to kindly take their conversation elsewhere before I begin.” chuckling softly, the Ratnik concluded.

“But since I very much wish to see fish on the dinner table tonight. I shall no go empty handed. And maybe you could help a little. After all, you haven’t visited me so it’d be a nice moment together. And you look a little unwell to so perhaps it could sooth your mind as well” He smiled.

“Sure, I mean I did also scare the fishes away. So, it’s the least I can do.” you sheepishly smiled back. Though you doubted you could be of much help to the fae and probably end up messing somehow.

After all, you could barely complete your dailies these days, let alone this…

But you couldn’t exactly say no or leave after offering to take care of Paimon and send you food while you were sick. So with a deep exasperated sigh that let your shoulders slump, you took the offered fishing rod from the Ratnik.

Raising an eyebrow once you realized the type of rod you were holding, you glanced towards Flins who was already casting his. Meanwhile Paimon pouted like the child she was, having to wait for the food was not a strong suit of hers.

You weren’t exactly expecting to be a heavier rod when catching surface level fish. A light or even a medium one would’ve been better but a heavy one? Oh well, it’ll have to do for now since he didn’t seem to have any other no matter how much more of a pain in the ass it may be.

You doubted you could cast it very far with a light bait yet you still tried giving it a good throw. Thankfully it did land fairly far with your strength.

You turned your rod a bit to an angle as the small floaty thingy you forgot the name of temporarily dipped beneath the surface before resurfacing just as quickly.

“Paimon knows we barely started but I’m already getting hungry” whined the pixie, you however, just rolled your eyes.

However, noticing that the Ratnik didn’t angle his rod and was pointing directly at it, you felt the need to nudge him gently on the shoulder.

“You know pointing it directly at the lure is a bad idea right?” Flins glanced at you, raising an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“The rod serves as a shock indicator- I mean absorber and bite indicator.” you clarified, your voice a little quieter than usual for the fish, so you were hoping he wouldn’t catch that.

Goddamnit can I not speak… How much more pathetic do I have to be!?

“Anyways, basically what I’m trying to get at is if your fishing rod is pointed at the lure and when a fish strikes it hard, all that impact shock is absorbed by the line itself instead of the rod which can break your line.” You finished, trying to keep your voice low.

“Whoa, Paimon didn’t knew you learnt so much in Mondstat! Now Paimon wished she paid attention.” She remarked.

“Shh, Paimon. You’re going to scare the fishes away again.” You hushed in response.

While Flins’s full attention was on you when it shouldn’t be. His thoughtful gaze from earlier returning as he put a hand on his chin. “Is that so? I appreciate your need to tell me and I ask you to pardon my lack of experience.” He smiled.

And you… felt… empty… No, hungry…

The familiar pain in your skull increased and your vision blurred but you tried to refocused with a few forced blinks. You couldn’t fall

Not again… not now…

You shook your head and groaned. Yet, you forced yourself to be discreet. Worrying Flins was the last thing you needed.

“Aether…?” She muttered quietly, floating closer to you, worry etched on her face once more. She was careful to not get the blue haired fae’s attention either, which you were somewhat glad for.

‘I’m fine, It’s just returning.” Was all he needed to say before the Pixie frowned and nodded, floating away a little and putting some distance since she knew he hated being close in state like this.

Though Flins was observant enough to know something was up even if he didn’t fully understand what.

Night had arrived by the time both had finished. With a fair bit of fish at hand Aether decided to go back to Flin’s grave.

You had insisted on being the one to cook despite Flins’s protest since you were the guest and not the other way around. Meanwhile Paimon was simply drooling after having to wait half a day for something. Besides, she traveled with you for long enough to know that ‘no’ meant nothing to you when others needed your help even if they didn’t want it. After all if Mondstat and Inuzuma didn’t sell it to the fairy, Natlan and now Nod-Krai sure did.

But she didn’t want to think about any of that as you placed the dishes in front of Flins and Paimon, giving one of them more so the other wouldn’t steal. Though you didn’t give yourself nearly as much despite the pain in you abdomen.

Finishing some of your portion and giving the rest to the fairy to have some alone time, you decided to head over to Flins who was at what you thought was his collection table? Or was it his workshop… You weren’t sure but you approached him even with the increasing discomfort and pain in your mid-section.

“You didn’t eat much back there…” Flins commented as you came to stand next to him.

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t have much of an appetite anyways.” You sheepishly chuckled

“But it was customary for people to cook and feed their guests more otherwise it’d be rude not to, no?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Yes, but I prefer not to.” You shook your head. Not that you deserve it anyways…

“There has been a decrease in rodents… You needn’t store anything for later or for me.”

You simply shrugged. Though now that he said, it out loud…. There had been a weird lack of any squirrels, rats and other smaller creatures near the hotel, the Frost Moon Scions and pretty much everywhere else you’ve explored so far…

But you pushed that thought at the back for now.

Your eyes looked around, looking for a conversation starter so his mind wouldn’t have to linger on the fact he hadn’t eaten much and was the one who cooked instead of him, albeit a little forcefully than you intended. Thankfully, your eyes caught the sight of a few gems…

“Are those Opals? I didn’t realize you could find some here too, let alone one so pretty.” You remarked

That seemed to get him out of his trance. it was almost adorable the subtle way his eyes sparkled.

“Yes! Gemstones reflect the light differently in different environments.” He added a little too quickly for even his own liking, unable to help himself. “A gem by candlelight flickers like flame, while a gem beneath the moon seems like a tear filled eye. There are a thousand forms of beauty, and gems are cut in a thousand ways. Such complexity of things both elegant and timeless.” He continued while you let out a soft chuckle, unable to ignore the newly formed smile on him no matter how small it may be.

“As you may know I’m in the habit of collecting old treasures and gems are no different. Some of them are even from other nations. But as old as they are, some of them have lost their glow may appear turbid. They cannot compare with the brilliant luster of a newly cut stone.”

“And while you may feel free to enjoy these collections whenever you please, do be careful while handling.” He added at the end a little sheepishly.

Nodding in response with a genuine but slightly strained smile on your face, trying to endure the increasing pain….

You half wondered this is what Lumine and plenty of other girls with through every month during their cycle. It almost made you feel bad. On the bright side at least you knew what to gift him when his birthday finally rolls around.

You made a mental note in your head and bid the fae farewell before forcefully dragging Paimon away from the food after trying to take more of it again. Though she did stop resisting and went quiet again once she noticed you wincing once more, now becoming the one to drag you instead.

What the hell was happening with your body…?

Chapter 5: Oh deer

Summary:

A certain cyan haired robot encounters something her coding wasn’t even thought possible.

Chapter Text

Water streamed down the narrow river, yet even in the pitch black darkness, life still shown. After all, it was prime deer hour at the moment, and it knew.

It’s previous hunt had failed so something else would have to do.

The black formless mass moved around, squeezing and twisting into shapes as it did so. It’s rotten smell masked by the adjacent wind and nearby flowers. One such lump sticking out formed into a leg with its end turning into a specialised finger, a hoof. Then another, then another.

The semi-liquid body hardening and sprouted tufts of fur, trying to mimicking what it had seen through their eyes while asleep as it walked through the brushes and a rounded the trees and caught the gaze of another stag.

The fur around its muzzle still dripping with water as the stream flowed around its legs as if it were simply another stone.

The stag tilted its head, not recognizing the seemingly new comer’s scent while the thing simply approached just as a regular deer would, its previous rotten stench masked by its new form.

It couldn’t perfect the smell given how their host’s noses weren’t as powerful, yet it’d have to do.

And it got closer, it realized too late it hadn’t masked it’s mouth, the only part that still carried the stomach churning smell.

The first rays of sun were starting show, making the grass seemingly shine as rays of light hit the early morning dew drops.

But the breeze didn’t carry the sweet scent of the dews or the nearby meadow in the forest. Only the rusty smell of blood filled the air accompanied by the squelching noise of something being torn. Probably organs.

At least that’s what Ineffa calculated anyways.

The grass crunched under each step, her eyes scanning the area. It was still fairly dark considering the sun hadn’t fully rose yet but thankfully her night vision came in handy.

She had been woken up form her charging station by a very terrified Aino claiming something was outside the shop. The only problem was, after scanning through existing data and memory files, her calculations concluded there couldn’t possible be a threat. Especially not this late in the night.

But, she caved towards the pink haired girl’s pleads and baby eyes and reluctantly got out to search for the thing, which according to her- was a giant black figure with glowing deep blue eyes.

Though as she approached, the sounds of low grunts, growls and the sick sound of flesh being torn slowly got louder.

“Cautious Protocol activated”

The robot rounded the corner, her glowing eyes illuminating in the dark even if it was just a little, and saw a deer carcass.

At first her processors assumed a wolf or fox was munching on the poor animal until the thing feeding on it, raised it’s head and she saw… another deer…?

.

A physical scan showed it looked mostly like a deer say for deep blue eyes, the unusually sharp teeth and the fact it was gorging on another deer. but all her other sensor didn’t recognize it, let alone be able to deal it at the moment.

The world seem to pause as the sun rose, it’s light exposing whatever it was more and more.

”Danger detected. Danger detected.” Rung the alarm in her head as she readied her hand cannon.

And for a brief moment it’s eyes flickered to a different color similar to topaz before it let out a snarl, slowly backing off before bolting of into the darkness.

she wasn’t sure if her sensors picked it up right, but from what she managed to gather, the rear and hind legs started to turn black when the thing looked up, the black coloring spreading even more as it started to run away and became more slime like in texture.

She’d definitely have to either tell Aino or the frost moon scions, depending who ever believed her.

Who was she even kidding? As genius as she may be, the pink haired girl was still a child.

Chapter Text

Tossing and turning around in your cot as beads of sweat covered your forehead, you groaned feeling like your head was going to explode and you body felt like it would either over heat or give up on you.

Laying on your back, you stared up at the ceiling, your breath laboured and acutely audible while your was vision blurry, unfocused despite your attempts to see right with a few forced blinks.

You sniffled back the snot that was clogging your nose. Everything just made you feel disgusting. As if you weren’t gross already…

At this rate you didn’t even trust your own brain, let alone your eyes.

You’d forgotten the last time you had a proper night of rest all week. Each time your tired eyes felt too heavy too keep open, horrid images of ravaged corpses and blood curtailing screams rung in your ears.

By Celestia their screams… their bodies… it just made you want to vomit all over again…

But in a weird way they felt… familiar…?

You shook your head. You weren’t sure. Not that you were really sure of anything these days.

“Aether! We’re back!” Exclaimed a familiar pixie that honestly made your ears hurt. But you stayed silent for now. Your throat already felt like it had swallowed hot coal and needles. The last thing you needed was for it to get worse.

Paimon floated closer holding what seemed to be a towel. Shivering at the cool wetness as she gently placed it atop your forehead, you let out a weak grunt but your arms felt like jello…

Wait… what the hell even was a jello…?

Argh! Stop hallucinating so much like this! Your fucked up state is already causing enough problems for everyone else and making them worry even more is the last thing you wanted.

Paimon was already a lot less chaotic and much more quieter as is, and seeing her frown slipping through her mask and seeing that worried look she gave you made you feel wrong.

“How about Paimon bring you some food? Paimon is sure Flins would gladly help if we asked.” Tilting her head, she smiled sheepishly. Her hands clasped behind her back. For once, you actually nodded. Not because you wanted or finally realized you needed the help, not because you were hungry either despite skipping both dinner and breakfast as evening started to strike.

But rather you literally physically couldn’t say no at the moment.

Either way, Paimon’s eyes widened a little but quickly replaced it with a smile and nodded cheerfully, scurrying off before you could change your mind.

You tried letting out an exasperated sigh you immediately regretted doing the moment it passed your burning throat, getting a small wince out of you once more. Last time this had happened you already felt like shit. This time you felt worse. way worse. You didn’t remember the last time you were anywhere near this sick since maybe Nathan. Even then it was a lot more tamer than this.

You turned to your side, away from the door and towards the window where the moonlight hit your face, causing the wet towel to slip slightly, but you didn’t care.

Your eye lid’s feeling heavy once more, they start to flutter close. By the Archons did you feel tired… yet the moment your vision turned dark, it appeared.

Out of all your nightmares, one persisted.

The world felt dark again

Though this time it wasn’t nearly as painful. Were you falling or floating? You couldn’t tell. Your sense were gone yet again say for your sight. But it was still too dark to make anything.

All you knew was however long you end up staying here for, none of it will be pleasant for you too long.

“You know, don’t you? Yet you still refuse to accept it.” Called a familiar voice, but you didn’t respond. Not because you couldn’t, rather you choose not to since either way you knew what was going to happen. She always greeted whenever you visited. It’s just that 3 weeks ago was the first time you actually recalled her, and also when the nightmares started…

“Stubborn as ever, I see? You haven’t changed one bit.” Replied whom you assumed to be a young girl, almost seeming amused.

Once again, you didn’t respond. You simply closed your eyes once more and let out a sigh, waiting to either be woken up or given yet another barrage of flashbacks of screamers and torn bodies.

Yet… when you finally opened them once more, you were greeted with what you assumed to be the blinding light of the sun hitting your face. You winced slightly, instinctively covering your face.

Slowly removing your arm and blinking your eyes till it adjusted however, you noticed you were in bed…? No screams, no blood… just calm…

The bed creaked under your weight as you sat up, next to you was an old stuffed teddy bear you found yourself hugging. The night light on top the bedside table was still on, coating the room in a shade of blue and clashing with the sun’s yellows and orange that poured through the window right above you and turning the normally golden brown walls into oranges on the sunn side and a muter gray where the night light was strongest.

Colorful illustrations of creatures and animals you haven’t seen on Teyvat were painted on the carpet lining your bed. Stickers and drawings lined the golden brown walls with even more color.

Your vision was blurry but you could still make out the general shapes.

It all felt so… nostalgic….

You felt like you’ve known this place your whole life yet you could not fir the life of you remember where and when.

“AETHER!!!!” Shrieked another familiar young girl you didn’t recognize as either Paimon or the girl that greeted you when everything went dark, coupled with the olive green door flying open made you jump, snapping you out of your thoughts.

“AETHER! WHERE THE HECK DID YOU PUT THAT BOOK!?” Yelled the blonde, her topaz eyes filling with rage.

“L-lumine…?” You blinked, not really sure of what was happening.

“Ugh! You always steal the damn thing! Where did you hide it now?” Groaned your twin.

“Wait, I didn’t-“ you tried protesting, “Tell me now or so help me! I’m gonna tell dad!” A young Lumine interrupted, stomping her feet.

You however, trying to speak again. “I don’t know! I didn’t take it this time! Trust me!”

“You always say that!” She huffed, crossing her arms before turning to what looked to be the kitchen you assumed and stormed out slamming the door behind her. “Dad! Aether took my story book and won’t say where it is again!”

“Hey! Wait-!” Reaching your hand out to towards where she once was, you let out an exasperated sigh as your hand slumped to your side.

But, it felt good…

Your face couldn’t help but break into a small smile despite knowing it was just another fleeting moment.

Then the familiar throbbing pain in your head started creeping back up your skull again.

Shutting your eyes, you wince in pain and rubbed your thumbs in a circular motion against your temples. The world around you started to feel hot again.

Fuck…

That never meant anything good…

Your chest felt tight, breathing shaky all over again.

Please… I know it was going but please… for once just let me be at peace…

The screaming rung in your ear once more but your eyes remained shut. You didn’t want to see them. You didn’t want to see it.

“Aether…!” Called out Lumine, her sudden grab causing you to finally open your eyes and look at her. Both shared the same expression as smoke filled the air and fires pained the skies orange-red, terrified.

Your lashes were getting charred but the exits you knew were blocked by wreckages of some kind. Your heart was besting so fast it felt it’d jump out of your chest any moment as your eyes searched wildly for something… anything…!

You spotted a shadowy figure in the smoke. Narrowing your eyes you made out what seemed to be another man.

The man stared back, his dark blue glowing eyes cutting through the flames and smoke, right at you while an even bigger mass slowly rose up from the smoke and ash, its bloodied snout holding the severed arm of the one you once called family.

Not the you that’s present today, no. Your young and weak arms clutched around your twin and she did the same, both shaking, both teary eyed. Being the more emotional one you were out right sobbing.

The cracking and crunching of bones it made by squeezing its jaws tighter on the severed arm made you want to vomit. And that wretched smell made your stomach churn even more.

The man simply stared for what felt like forever, his eyes glowing before he slowly raised a finger… at **you**. Lumine glanced at you, her already suffocating hold getting tighter if that was even possible, scared that you’d somehow disappear if she let go.

And given how the beast’s eyes flickered blue too before it turned its head towards you as well, dropping your father’s arms, you wouldn’t blame her. Not that you ever really did.

Bearing its teeth, the thing snarled before it took one step closer. Then another, then another…

The series of thumps increased in speed as so did it. It’s unsheathed it’s newly formed claws, it opened its jaws wide open and-

Letting out a sharp gasp on instinct, your eyes shot open once more before quickly being accompanied by the throbbing pain of both your head and throat shooting through body.

You were clutching the sheets so hard your knuckled turned white, something you didn’t even knew you were capable of at the moment given your depleted strength.

Your heart drummed against your ribcage, your breathing now shaky along with everything else. You stared up at the ceiling once more, your hand now over your chest.

You wanted so badly to know and understand why and what happened. Yet every attempt simply left out with a painful headache or worse.

This was not the first time something like this had happened. But it was the first time it had happened in such a scale, at least here anyways. Your memory had a bad habit of flip-flopping between remembering too much and remembering too little.

“You’re awake.” Stated a familiar voice. Thinking it was Paimon at first you turned your head to see-

“Bina…?” Forcing yourself to speak, you weakly called out and trying to ignore the feeling of swallowed glass in your neck.

Blinking thrice, you slightly pinched yourself, making sure she wasn’t just another hallucination you were seeing. And sure enough, you weren’t dreaming.

There she was, sitting in the floor next to the bed, resting her head in her arms as she leaned against the bed. Her eyes still shut all the same. “You haven’t visited in a while…” muttered the moon maiden as she gently placed a hand on yours, rubbing her thumb against at the back making your already flustered face even more pink, if that was even possible.

Her skin felt so cold against yours it almost made you shiver. Only then did you notice the plate of now cold on the table near you…

Trying to open up your mouth once more, you tried speaking, only to be shushed by the for,er harbinger. “Shh, speak not in this state. You need rest.” She stated. “I heard you were sick and wanted to visit.” She added before climbing onto the small cot, sitting near the edge.

Her presence alone made you made you feel much more at ease. It always did. But by the Archons did you hate letting her see you like this. So weak. So disgusting. And here she was, smiling at you.

It only made your heart go faster, though it felt good this time.

Wait… how the heck was she even here…? Never mind. You couldn’t even speak right and even if you tired she’d just shush you. You’ll just have to remember to ask later.

Her hands snaked up to your chest where your other hand was before intertwining it. “There is something… and it’s hungry… I sense it’s near….” she muttered more to herself than anything. Even with her eyes shut behind her semi-transparent veil, you could feel her staring, studying you.

However your mind has currently gone blank at the fact you were holding hands with her.

Smiling placidly at you and tilting her head, she gave your hand a gentle squeeze. “Sleep. I’m here.”

Staring at her the with the same studying manner, your eyes scrutinised every contour of her face, trying to find anything. Only for them to soften once you found nothing. You knew she was catching on and it’d only be a matter of time before the truth got out and you’d probably end up having to exile yourself for everyone else’s safety without an explanation despite their begs and pleads or you’d be kicked out like in Inazuma and Fontain.

They’re faces when they found out some how felt less worse than the hurt you saw when they learnt you were leaving. Yet every one of them was ingrained into your head for possibly the foreseeable future. You didn’t want this time to be the same. But you already knew better.

You gave her hand a small squeeze back, your eyes feeling heavy once more as they finally fluttered close.

And somehow, her presence alone made things better.

“INEFFA, WHERE IS HE!?!?”

Chapter Text

The air was surprisingly warm at this hour for a place like Nasha town as holden hour struck, painting the skies in a orange and yellow.

Having just finished your patrols for the day, you decide to take a short stroll around Nasha town. Catching a few glances being directed towards you, you assumed it was because of your still some what flustered face. After all, you haven’t fully recovered despite Paimon’s protest to stay and rest more. Yet you brushed them off the same way you did to Paimon until she finally agreed.

Stretching your arms, you yawn while the fairy next to you was went on about her day when you were sick.

“So Paimon had to go allll the way to the cemetary with Ineffa after borrowing her since Paimon forgot the way only to find Flins talking with the ghost people again-” She continued ranting and you simply watch, unable to contain the small smile forming on your face. You weren’t exactly paying attention per her words as much as you liked just hearing her.

“So, when Ineffa accidently scared away the ghosts Paimon finally came out from behind her and-” she stopped mid sentence, her eye catching the large group of people as she glanced towards the notice board. “Wow, this place is buzzing with activity… Oh, hey! There is a notice board over there!” She exclaimed.

And there she goes…

You barely had time to process before she…. sprinted? Soared? Whatever the heel the name was when you suddenly floated fast.

“Hey, wait!” You called out to the fairy who was already in front of the board. Squeezing past a few strangers, your eyes landed on the cause of commotion…

“Huh… there is so much spacing on this thing, but only for one post.” She commented, glancing at you. “Let’s see here-”

‘Dear friend:

Should you read this request for aid, please head to the

Cling-Clang Krumkake Craftshop as soon as you can.

Please forgive the sudden request. A heretofore unseen crisis

has descended, and my simulations confirm that the Craftshop’s

chances of destruction have increased by 10.3%, with the

chances of Nod-Krai as a whole being destroyed having

increased by 2.6%. These developments are what have prompted

the request.

The situation is urgent, and I have decided to face this crisis

down alone firs. The chances I will not return is 83%, which

is why I left this here.

Once again, please head to the Cling-Clang Krumkake Craftshop

as soon as you can. Thank you very much!

-Ineffa’

Your eyes widen slightly at the notice while Paimon continued to read out loud for you even if you’ve already finished.

What the hell happened…?

“Wait, Ineffa needs help?” She raised an eyebrow before resuming, slightly concerned. “Uh oh… What’s this about a ‘major crisis’ and ‘ruin’?” Her eyes widened as well and turned to you.

“Paimon thinks should still head over and check things, just in case!” Smiling, she clasped her hands behind her back even if you saw how tight the smile seemed. Though you didn’t blame her as you worried too…

Just for a different reason as a familiar emptiness slowly started returning in your abdomen.

The black cat purred, snuggling up to the green haired lady’s hand while Neffer simply smile as she continued petting her, her frown faltering as she glanced up as the number of recent reports of a monster.

An audible sigh escaped her lips when she rubbed her temple with her free hand staring at the stack of papers that had started appearing ever since that blond haired traveler appeared.

Aether was it? Well what ever it was, one thing was the same between all of them.

Yet another case of a large solid black figure roaming around. Most say it has deep blue eyes while other say they saw a golden color.

It was supposed to be another myth, a cut and dry case of maybe some sort of children’s tale gone out of hand. Yet, there were actual stakes this time. Actual lives this time.

Whatever this thing was, it had already claimed a handful of animals. It was only a matter of time before it went with bigger pray.

Even Lauma approached her with the same concerns, saying a few of her companions have gone missing and her birds have found a black slime like thing apparently ‘shapeshifting’ into other things?

Even she was skeptical when the birds told her yet she brought it up anyways…

Shaking her head, she forced herself to snap out of her thoughts. She wasn’t sure if the town was going crazy or if she was anymore. But she knew it had something to do with the blond newcomer with that white haired, floating pixie thing that was always attached to him despite the lack of proof.

Now she was waiting for Jahoda to finally scout them out and come back with intel….

Evening had finally started to come as the skies turned a shade of dark blue accompanied by the sound of footsteps and crushed grass and two familiar faces approached.

“Ineffa! We saw your notice, and we’re here to help!” Yelled the fairy while you followed behind, hiding your now audibly grumbling stomach.

“…Hello? Anybody here?” She called out once more as her concern grew.

“Huh, she’s gone…” She commented before turning to you.

“Does that mean she really ran into trouble she couldn’t handle?” muttered the pixie, her voice wavering a little.

Feeling you heart being squeezed you give her a smile and reached out, gently patting her head. “I’m sure she’s ok. We just have to keep looking!’ But the words felt hollow to even you.

“Ah, Paimon and traveler are the first to arrive. Sincere apologies, I am unable to come down and greet you at the present moment. I will have to converse from up here. But I am glad to see traveler a bit better at the moment.” The monotone voice made you both jump a little, Paimon more then you.

She turned back once more, this time she looked up from where the sound came from…

“Huh? Ineffa!? What the-”

Standing there slack jawed, you blink a few times as if to make sure it wasn’t some hallucination again, your pain almost forgotten...

almost…

Yet it wasn’t any illusion.

There the blue haired robot was, currently stuck to the Craftshop’s Magnet as the giant mechanism moved around.

“Is this the major crisis?” You finally forced yourself to speak, now with a raised eyebrow.

“What happened? Did someone attack you?” Paimon asked worriedly and you crossed your arms.

“Hmm… the logic of your conclusion is sound, but I would not use that word. After all, Aino us the one who did this.” Ineffa shook her head

“Wait, Aino was the one who did this?” The fairy tilted her head.

“I think we should get Ineffa down from there first before we continue.” You stated, your mind already trying to think up of a way to get her down despite how foggy you brain still felt and trying not to wince in front of Paimon as the creeping pain returned in your head.

Archons it felt like you couldn’t go a single day with out it being a pain in the ass anymore these days…

“Ah, good idea.” Nodding in response, Paimon looked back up at Ineffa. “Does this giant magnet have a switch or something?”

“Request not feasible. Aino has locked down the control system.” Explained the construct. “Analyzing further options…” She trialed off, her robot orbs beginning to glow as weird machine noises that you didn’t know what it meant could be heard from her.

“Conclusions: The priority level of certain rules must be lowered.” Ineffa spoke up once more after a few moments.

“Decision: I will Temporarily override one of Aino’s rules and inform you about the hidden control system. But first, I must be certain you will keep it a secret.” The construct narrowed her eyes, as if analyzing you too.

“I don’t know if it’ll be enough, but I assure at most I’ll only ever use it during another crisis… Once I’ve actually understood what you’ve said…” You muttered to yourself the last part a bit too loud.

“Sufficient grounds for override… Please proceed to the path of the side of the workshop and locate the robots scattered over there.” Ineffa nodded before continuing. “Once you have located all the specific robots, you can unlock the control system. This is the back door Aino Established for herself as she of the forgets the password.” She finshed.

Blinking in surprise, it took you a few moments to process her words as you thought there’d be more of a challenge, maybe even a test. Though quickly brushed it off the moment the surprise wore off.

After all, nothing’s been going your way so you take what you could.

“Okay then! So we just need to collect all the bots! We can do this!” Exclaimed the Pixie with an amount of enthusiasm that already made you feel dread for what’s about to come before she bolted off… in the wrong direction…

“Hey! Wait, that’s-!” Reaching your arm out on instinct before it slumped to your side, already knowing your words fell on deaf ears as you let out an exasperated sigh.

Celestia help me…

Chapter Text

“Ok! That should be everyone!” Exclaimed Paimon, clasping her hands as the moon now hung high, illuminating both her and the 9 cube-like robots while you came to a stop next to her, panting.

“Beep-Boop Beep” A few clicks could b e heard as the small bots begun jumping around on top of one another forming a sort of 3x3 square screen which caused the white haired pixie to coo in amazement. You on the other hand was just glad you could stop running around after Paimon and stop the floating fairy from bumping into objects that nearly broke the poor machines.

Archons did that take you MUCH longer than it should’ve but at least it was over now even if you head hurt more.

The new machine the constructs assembled themselves into made a buzzing noise until the screen came to life- “Zing-Zap Mechanical Claw backup control system now online. Enter a command”

So that’s what it’s called? Guess that’s fair considering who named it.

You couldn’t help but be a little impressed yourself at the kid’s genius though you pushed that thought away for the time being as you turned to face the giant Magnet where Ineffa was still stuck at.

“Shut down the Zing-Zap Mechanical claw.” instructing the robot with a red cross plinking onto it’s screen as you crossed your arms, your eyes never leaving the magnet. Simply because you wanted to know what’d happen.

“Command confirmed. Shutting down Zing-Zap Mechanical Claw Number 1.” Replied the bot and almost immediately the blue hue coming from the giant arm flickered before slumping forward and Ineffa….

*CRASH*

You didn’t really know what you were expecting but the last thing on your mind was Ineffa to literally crash down onto the ground with such a loud thud. You blinked in surprise, You body already moving towards the cloud of dust that billowed into the air during the impact.

An audible gasp escaped from your companion’s mouth even after covering her mouth. ”Whoa, are you ok, Ineffa??”

“D-damnit…!” Coughing into your elbow, you tried to wave away at the dust as if shooing it away from your eyes as the cloud of brown settled around you and the view cleared for Ineffa to brush your eyes flickering blue as a display issue.

The blue haired construct barely reacted as she casually stood up, not even bothering to dust herself when her eyes glowed cyan. “Inspection in progress… All functions normal. I am unharmed. Aino adjusted the kuuvahki strength to make sure of that.” Replied the robot in her usual monotone voice.

Right…. your dumbass almost forgot she’s not a real human again… There is a very good reason why Aino put a literal 40 page essay disguised as a liability contract…

Welp… at least it makes things easier even if you body just loves staring wars inside of you these days for some reason…

“So, what exactly happened?” Hearing Paimon’s question so close next to you honestly made you jump a little, it felt like the girl somehow teleports the moment your leave her out of your side for one second.

“Compiling relevant data…” Trailed off Ineffa, her eyes flickering cyan once more. “In short, Aino created a new robot companion not too long ago, but yesterday, someone stole it from the workshop.” She explained.

“Ohhh, that explains it” Cooed your companion.

“So, this is the ‘major crisis’?” You couldn’t help but feel a little cheated in a weird way.

Sure you didn’t mind helping but the way she said it made you thought it was something to do with Sandrone or Rerir even. What could the girl possibly do-

“I used that term because Aino intends to unleash the force of her entire fleet of combat against those suspected of theft.” Ineffa stated.

“…”

Never mind! She’s a LOT more pissed and strong-headed than you thought…. Such lovely combination for a child…

‘What!?” Exclaimed the pixie, almost perfectly encapsulating your own reaction.

“If Aino manages to uses her genius for destructive purposes, all of Nod-Krai will be facing a crisis the likes of which has never been seen before.” She abbreviated. “

Better make a mental note now before you end up on her bad side!

“When I attempted to stop her, she trapped me with that device. Fortunately, I was prepared for that possibility, and was prepared for that possibility and was able to post a request for help in advance.” She added.

“Guess that explain the notice on that board.” You commented.

“Fortunately, you arrived just in time. Aino and her robot fleet should still be at the workshop. Please follow me” Stated Ineffa and turned to head to the shop at hand. Paimon simply nodded before following herself and while you did too, you couldn’t help but glance at east where the first rays of light started showing…

It’s almost the first golden hour of the day and you and Paimon already spent all evening and night here… Was she really that slow? Oh well, just hope you get enough time to do get back to Katherin before Paimon notices neither of you have slept since afternoon.

*Clash*

The double doors flew open with much more strength than necessary as the a man in a suit panted, using his arms to hold himself up by the door frame as beads of sweat pricked his forehead.

“Master!” Called the grunt with an amount of urgency that made him raise an eyebrow.

“Urgh, hat is it this time? Don’t tell me our remaining little play things escaped again like the other one.” Rolling his eyes, he twirled the glass of purplish-red wine, his ruby red eyes glaring at the man with annoyance, almost boredom.

“No, no.” The henchmen shook his head. “W-We… “ He struggled to fins the right words, the whole situation feeling a little surreal even to himself.

He scoffed, his gaze returning to his goblet.

“W-we, W-we, we WHAT damnit?” He hissed, not caring for how he flinched at his little mockery.

Gulping, the man in the suit stared worriedly at the floor before taking a deep breath and forcing himself to look at his superior.

“We… We found him…” He finally breathed out. “They… They’re still alive… Still here…”

He stilled almost immediately, the brim of his goblet barely brushing his lips before he pulled it away slightly and slowly turned to look at the henchmen.

“He... what…?”

“Cling-Clang Legion, it’s time to move out!” The pink haired girl ordered, standing tall among her creations, arms crossed and pissed.

“Cling-Clang Legion, Out!” All the constructs replied in unison.

“Our objective is simple, Track down the thief and save our comrade!” explaining with a huff, placing her hands on her hips.

“Track down the thief! Save our comrade!” The army of box-like robots repeated at the same time once more.

“Aino, you have to stop this.” She jumped a little, momentarily distracted from her anger at the familiar monotone voice as she turned around to face her most beloved robot.

“Ineffa? How did you get…” Trailing off, her eyes widened glancing at the company she brought this time as the pieces clicked in her head in real time.

“Aha, you had help! Well, don’t even think of trying to stop me! U don’t care if I have to search al of Nod-Krai - I will find the person who did this!” Aino stomped her foot.

“You can’t do this Aino!” Your white haired, floating companion exclaimed when the two of you came to a stop behind Ineffa.

“I can’t! I have to go now, or ‘Krum-Clan 70% sweet’ will get dismantled and sold for parts!” Shaking her head in response before turning to her army of bots once more. “Cling-clang Legion, move ou-!”

“Wait! I’ll give you sweets if you don’t continue!” Reaching your hand out to her, you called out to her. Paimon and Ineffa both glanced at out, even you took a few moments to process the words that tumbled out of you before thinking.

Archons you fucked up so bad… Ineffa is gonna murder you-

The pink haired girl stiffened and turned towards you, almost expectantly.

“Desserts are the only thing that can get Aino calmed down, so for now I approve of your decision.” The blue haired robot nodded in approval.

Or… not….? How in Celestia are you still here???

Shaking your head to push away those thoughts for now you reached into your pouch in the hopes of finding literally anything in there.

After a little rummaging however you thankfully managed to find a box with a random thing of leftover pie you forgot about after surprising Columbina.

Ineffa calmly took the box form you and turned around, offering it to Aino.

”Hmph, still treating me like a kid, huh!” She huffed, glaring with her one open eye and choosing to ignore the fact she herself had her hand reached out towards it at the moment.

Kids never change… At least it worked…

The beast breathed heavily, it’s footsteps silent as the wind as it blew adjacent to it. It’s eyes seemed to glow a cool blue in the shadow.

It’s body- made of viscus black slime that slowly drooped onto the soil below, seemingly killing the plants with the toxin- suddenly morphing, mimicking the tuffs of fur on wolves, foxes or whatever other woodland creature it had observed while dormant.

Lumps stretched out of it’s body as it inched closer until one of the lumps stepped forward instead, the ends now resembling more like paws while three more took shape. It’s eyes locked onto… a human… a traveler.

Snarling, the beast’s eyes glowed. The man to late to turn around as it the *thing* dug it’s newly formed claws into the earth before pouncing onto the man. thankfully Celestia was kind enough to give him a quick fate when the beast’s sharp teeth that had formed just then sunk into their neck, as it’s claws now dug into it’s flesh, silencing whatever scream they had tried making. it’s crushing weight was onto top of the traveler when it pulled on the flesh.

Their clothes were torn off like scissors on silk gliding across. The squelching noise sounded like music to the it’s master’s ear, currently blinded by it’s hunger. The thing stuffed it’s muzzle already bloody inside, brushing against their intestines painting it in even more red. The rusty, sickly sweet smell the fluids was all it could smell and by Celestia did is smell amazing to it’s old master.

And he would enjoy every last bite of his return.

And all it could do with what little sanity and power it had left over itself was cry while it’s master fed for both of them…

It wanted so badly to pull back and stop feasting, to stop letting the hunger or it’s master take over for once. It’s eyes flickered golden as a howl escaped it’s bloody muzzle into the sky while it clawed at it’s face.

It wanted to vomit, to give back what it had taken and to never do it again. It had a life and they forced it to take it once more.

Alas the past cannot be undone. And it felt sick.

The legion of cube-like bots laid on their backs, scattered as the last of them fell to the ground in the same position as the rest of it’s kin.

Meanwhile a certain kid was currently gorging their face with the sweet pie, cream and crumbs smeared on her face.

“Listen… I know you guys think I’m making a big deal out of nothing-” She began before taking another bite. “-But, this wasn’t just some scrap parts you can sell on the black market!” She continued just as she gulped down the last of the pie.

“This was a robot I was about to add to the workshop, just like Ineffa… And as the boss of this place, it’s my job to look out for these bots! Even though I’m the one who has to get looked after most times…” She muttered the last part under her breath. “But, still! not letting a bot get carted off right under my nose is the least I can do!” She finished with yet another huff.

“It’s a disgrace… I don’t want to be that kind of boss.” Muttering, she shook her head, her voice a lot softer.

Feeling your heart clench you walked up around and crouched in front of her to her eye level before placing a gentle hand on her shoulder and put up the smile you use to make people feel better when you didn’t trust your true emotions.

“Aino… None of us think you were making a big deal out of nothing… Besides, I probably would’ve done the same.” A light chuckle escaped your lips. That always fooled them.

“Really…?” she finally looked up at you.

“Yes, really! But… rushing into action often makes things worse, ya’ know?” You tried explaining as gently as you could, albeit a little sheepishly as well.

The girl reminded you of a certain someone from a long time ago. Even now you couldn’t help but be at ease whenever you saw the same shade of deep blue as his eyes even if Lumine tensed at it.

“We an come with a plan together. We’ll help you get ‘Krum-Clang 70% Sweet’ back safe and sound.” Ineffa added making you jump for probably the third time in a row, now suddenly standing behind you.

Did she take after Columbina somehow?? How does she keep getting away with scaring people every time!

Yet you stood up and stepped back to let Ineffa take your place nonetheless.

“Thanks. And um, about earlier… I’m sorry, Ineffa…” Aino looked up at her while Ineffa placed a hand on her head, petting it.

“Phew… Looks like the millitary escapade’s on hold for now.” Paimon let out a sigh she didn’t know she was holding in as she floated to your side.

“Let’s go back to the workshop.” Stated Ineffa, turning to you and the Pixie. You simply nodded, sleep deprived but weirdly not hungry depite having not eaten anything the entire time.

Blissful to what’s at hand.

Chapter Text

“Listen here, you little shit. I OWN you now. Not him. Not anymore. So you do as I say, whether you like it, or not.”

Those words still rung in your words as if happened yesterday instead of years ago. Clutching the table so hard your knuckles turned white when you remembered more.

His piercing red eyes staring you down as he held you closer by the scruff of your ragged shirt, even then you still had to look up at him.

You couldn’t help but rub at your wrists, greatful they were covered up by your gloves.

Then, wincing at the sharp pain that shot through your skull, you felt you breath hitch. But you stopped yourself from bringing a hand up to your temple on instinct again.

That’d be too obvious.

“Job well done, everyone. Please enjoy some tea and dessert while we devise a plan of action.” The monotone voice stated, snapping you back to reality once more and allowing you to finally notice the plate of food put down in front of you.

The two children both made a little cooing noise, all sparkly eyed at the delicious goods in front of them. Neither hesitating to dig in almost immediately when the words was given.

Looking around, you saw everyone sitting in their respective places around the small table, happy.

You’ve been drifting off to the land of wonder quite a lot these days weren’t you? You should probably start digging too, but you just didn’t have the appetite. Normally you’d be starving without a few hours of eating something.

You got the feeling you knew why but you shook that thought off for now.

Archons did you wish so badly it wasn’t true despite the pit in your stomach.

Letting out a small sigh, you finally picked up the knife and fork and began slicing in-

“Okay, so how it thief handled in Nod-Krai? Do we call the police or something?” The question from your companion made you blink and turn towards the floating Pixie. Then you eye caught her plate…

Finished already!? Holy Celestia you knew Paimon was a glutton but still!

“Unfortunately, Nod-Krai is a largely autonomous region. There is no unified law enforcement organization.” Ineffa began replying to Paimon, seemingly unbothered while even Aino- who was mid bite that time- couldn’t help but take a small glance at the fairy. Judging by her nearly choaking and doing a double take at her too, the exact same thing probably went through her mind. “Which means ‘calling the police’ is theoretically impossible.” The cyan haired robot finished.

Aino forced down a gulp to finish her food, choosing to ignore Paimon acting like a literal vacuum cleaner And-

Wait… what in the Archons even was a vacuum cleaner??

Shaking her head to try and push that thought away for now she finally spoke up. “See? That’s why we have to take it into our own hands!” She added cheerfully.

“Still, turning all of Nod-Krai upside down seems a a bit… unconventional…” You muttered sheepishly.

“What choice do I have? The thief somehow dodged my whole whole security system. I don’t even know where to start searching.” Whined the pink hair girl.

Hearing a low hum coming from across the table, your eyes flickered towards Ineffa who’s eyes briefly glowed cyan.

“Analyzing options… If their goal is Mora, the thief will likely head to Nasha Town to search for a buyer. I believe there will be useful clues there.” Ineffa stated.

“Nasha Town, huh…” Trailed off Aino, tilted her head towards her own companion. “But, there are so many shady people there! Not the kind of people that like answering questions…” She frowned.

“Hm, it is not the best idea for you to interact with adults like that Aino.” She nodded in agreement. “I will handle the investigation instead. That way you can start clearing the backlog of requests in the meantime. Keeping customers waiting too long could have a negatively impact on our reputation.” Offered the cyan haired construct.

“Um… About that… Krum-Clamk’s core was built using a special kind of power… one that incorporates Kuuvahki. I wanted to test it out, so I took orders that I knew would require Krum-Clank’s help to complete.” Explained Aino, rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly.

“Hmm… Analyzing other solutions…” Ineffa hummed once more as her eyes literally lit up. “All foreseeable results are anticipated to have a negative effect on the workshop.”

“Wait! The he can use Kuuvahki too!” Paimon interjected.

The chair scrapped against the floor as the young girl stood up and slammed her palms on the round table. “What!? How is that possible?” She exclaimed wide eyed. Even Ineffa seemed a little surprised for once, albeit briefly before her eyes sparked cyan once more.

You don’t think you’ve ever since someone stand up so quickly in surprise ever since Kazuha learnt about your whole beast situation thingy… At least as far as you remembered before having to suppress your powers and therefore your memories for the 3rd time in a row at the time. And if things continue as is you think you’d be looking at your 7th attempt… if your even counting right that is…

“Calculations complete. Adequate solution identified.” Nodding, Ineffa stood up from her chair and walked over to you. “Traveler, I’d like to enlist your services to help Aino clear the workshop backlog. You will’ of course be generously compensated for your labor.”

However, shaking your head you put your hands up. “Please no, I-”

“Are you worried the pay may not be to your liking? I can assure you that we will adjust the amount of Mora if needed.” Interrupted the construct, trying to reassure you.

“No, no! That’s not what I was getting at.” Shaking your head once more. “I’d gladly help even if you didn’t pay. So, please, I wouldn’t feel good if you did.” You Sheepishly explained.

“Wait, you don’t want to be paid…?” The pink haired girl tilted her head at your words. Ineffa too, seemed to be confused at you once more.

The pixie glanced between you and the others, already feeling your discomfort.

“Uh, come on! There is no need for that! We’re all friend here aren’t we?” Interjected Paimon, which you think worked given how they nodded but you weren’t sure.

Either way at least it meant less for you to feel bad about later.

Ineffa spoke up once more with a small smile. “Much appreciated then, I’ll-”

“Nope! I’m gonna do that! I’ll head to Nasha town with the traveler. With his help I’m confident I can do both!” Aino interrupted, puffing her chest out. “I need you here, Ineffa. Someone needs to watch over the workshop and make sure nothing else gets stolen. You’re the only one I trust enough to do that. Besides, rescuing our stolen comrade is a job for the boss of this place. And that happens to be me!” The little girl huffed.

Ineffa stared at her for a long moment, her face blank, before a smile appeared on her face. “Then I will defer to you, boss’ The construct nodded before turning towards you. “Well, she is the boss of this workshop, and a capable one at that. Please have faith in her abilities and… look out for her if she needs help.”

Aino’s eyes quickly lit up at her approval, for once she could go alone and it was with her hero! “Alright, Cling-Clang legion! MOVE OUT!!!” Ordered the young girl before bolting straight towards the door.

“Aino sure is determined huh?” A soft chuckle escaped Paimon’s lips

“At least it’s not world destruction this time.” You replied.

The midday sun hung fairly high at this hour and had it been a normal day, things would’ve been the usual. People going about coming in and going out both literally and figuratively. Vendors, stalls and what not would’ve lined the spaces either scamming or trying to start over and sometimes even both. Sandrone’s Katherine, worked at the guild as usual and everything would’ve been fine….

Had it actually been just another normal day…

The blond had lost count of the amount of arguments that had sparked on the street as of late when news finally spread.

Tampered walls, broken windows and the beginnings of a riot. Albeit still a small one, consisting of only a 5 but the start of riot none the less. If things snowballed then it might end up the same way last time when all of Nasha town broke down.

But that was not on her mind at the moment.

“BOSS!!” The sudden shout snapped the now, messy, green haired woman out of her thoughts.

“Boss!” Her blond employee stumbled through the curtains, out of breath.

“What is it? Is there another report regarding it again?” Replied the woman, for once her now sunken eyes showed worry and she wasn’t so uptight and organized as she once was.

“The s-stupid, slime, monster thingy or whatever it’s called, It’s back! The damn thing is back!” Jahoda panted put between breaths. “I-It ate… a m-man… a t-traveler…” She muttered the last part, her hands now shaking. Neither wanted to believed, yet here it was…

Shit…

She needed to either find the traveler or Varka…

NOW

Afternoon came to fast.

A single flower was placed onto the headstone of the grave. But for now it was the only one Flins had for it at the moment.

Turning back, he saw the three other graves placed fairly close to it. All at different times yet all had the same cause.

Lauma tired her best to bring flowers and bring all the bodies here ravaged by the thing but she too was scared to go herself, let alone send the animals on what could be a suicide mission lest it was a bird of some kind and was extremely careful.

And Flins only got the feeling there’d be more…

He already tried hunting it to no success. At most he had only spotted it once before somehow disappearing…

prey didn’t work, letting his guard down didn’t work, distracting it didn’t work.

No bait did.

Sighing to himself, the blue haired Ratnik fae turned back and started heading towards his own grave. He had to find it before it found yet another innocent victim and claimed yet another life.

However, he did not see the black mass disappearing into the ground on the small hill, the previously purple-ish blue grass turning gray from the toxic rot.

“Welcome! Please feel free to peruse our Sumeru specialties. I’m more than happy to assist with any additional requests as well.” The old man smiled, using his frail hand to gesture towards the collection of vases, pots and whatever other ceramics the shop had at store at the moment.

“Wait, isn’t this Dori’s shop?” Paimon tilted her head as the trio approached. “Okay, this actually isn’t a bad idea… You never know what kind of stuff Dori’s got stashed away.”

“Ineffa told me ‘If you can pay, there’s a way’. That’s what it’s famous for.” Aino stated already shaking her coat to see if anything valuable enough falls.

Raising an eyebrow however, you did not feel so comfortable.

“Are you two sure this’ll work? We’ve already exhausted everything else and I know while Dori has an appetite for money, I doubt she’d do it at the expense of someone who could turn all of Nod-Krai on it’s head for it.

Though you words fell on deaf ears as Aino was already walking up to the shop. “One of my bots was stolen yesterday, and I wanna know if the thief sold it to your shop!” She explained.

The old man brought a hand up to his chin as he tried his best to recall recent purchases or sells before reaching down behind the table and brought out a book of logs and flipped through the pages. “Ah, apologies. We have no record of any transactions, over the past two days, involving mechanical constructs…” Replied the old shopkeeper solemnly as he shook his head.

While you did feel bad, you also felt somewhat annoyed.

You were already being as lenient and understanding as you could towards two literal children. But you also knew that despite how bad Paimon’s suggestion is, you couldn’t win for now.

Seeing the town in such chaos these days honestly made things harder when no one trusted each other. You didn’t know why, but something was happening.

Your heart ached so bad you wanted to help, but you knew better than to poke your nose into things that might put you even more in trouble since you were directly connected to the damn thing.

“Aww, I thought we’d find something here for, sure…” Sighed the pink haired girl, her head slumping forward. Suddenly, your earlier annoyance was all but forgotten as you body before your mind did.

“Hey, It’s alright. There’s always a next time as long as the thief hasn’t sold it yet. I’m sure we can figure out something.” Smiling gently as you placed a hand on her shoulder.

“THERE YOU ARE!” The sudden exclamation made everyone jump as they turned towards the source of it, only to find a very pissed Jahoda stomping towards you.

What the hell was it with everyone trying to scare the shit out of you?? Was there some kind of competition you weren’t aware of? And why did Jahoda’s eyes seem… scared? Or was that worry? Either way you-

The blond placed her hands on your shoulders, clutching you so hard it almost hurt. “What. The. Hell. Are You. DOING.” She snarled as she shook you back and fourth like a ragdoll. “I have been looking everywhere to FIND YOUR DUMBASS. Do you even have any idea what’s happening??” She huffed, finally letting go and leaving your shoulders a little sore.

“Ugh, forget it for now. But you better be at Nefer’s by tomorrow or SO HELP ME!” Grunted the blond as she crossed her arms. “Your lucky that your already wrapped up with something else at the moment else I would’ve dragged you myself.” A sigh escaped her lips as she turned towards Aino, leaving you just standing there blinking with little to no time to process while Paimon kept glancing between you both, probably also confused.

“And you.” She pointed towards the pink haired girl. “Asking around Nasha Town for intel are we? You’re lucky you didn’t get swindled six ways from Sunday.” She shook her head.

“Oh, dumpster-diver. It’s you.” Aino greeted casually.

“Okay, now that was just uncalled for.” Huffed the blond, as she approached closer. “I’ve got a name pipsqueak - use it. I’m already through a lot so any sympathy is appreciated at the moment. But that’s not the point.”

“Word on the street is, someone stole your constructs…” Explained the blond girl.

“It’s not a construct. It’s a companion!” Retorted Aino.

“Well, either way, your uh, ‘intelligence mission’ or whatever… yeah, you weren’t exactly being subtle. Word’s spread throughout all of Nasha Town by now I bet. And while normally, I would chastise all three of you with how quick news spreads into the wrong hands, but I’m also somewhat greatful since that’s the only reason I managed to find you.” Stated Jahoda, turning towards you.

“But your in luck, Aino and the traveler, because the best bounty hunter in the land has decided to take up your cause, only because Nefer doesn’t want you to leave mid-way through helping another companion of yours in need, and she would’ve sent me here anyways to help.” Stated Jahoda, putting her hands on her hips and puffing her chest out.

“Smart as a whip, she navigates the major factions with ease, always with her fingers on the pulse of goings on in Nod-Krai. If you wanna get back what you lost, she’s your best bet!”

“Uh… Who is?” Aino tilted her head at the now dramatically posing Jahoda as she boasted herself which caused the blond girl to stop.

“Who!? Ugh, me, of course!” She huffed.

“Aww, Krum-Clank is doomed!” Shaking her head, Aino’s head slumped forward in disappointment once more.

‘What was with THAT reaction? does she think I’m a liability or somethin? Well so much for sympathy and still trying to be upbeat despite everything…’ thought Jahoda.

You couldn’t help but feel like this was going to be a lot longer of a day than you thought.

You were honestly more surprised you didn’t feel very hungry or tired after two whole days of not taking care of yourself…

The flowers shone a paler blue than usual. Not white, but not a full blue either. Yet Columbina walked through the flowers per usual.

She sung the only reminder of her birth, a lullaby echoed for no one but herself, heard by no one but the occasional spirits formed from the moon goddess’s blessing.

Her steps soft and dainty as her voice as she stepped, compressing the grass under her foot, unbothered on the outside, empty in her heart.

She missed the warmth of the sun, the outlander who hadn’t been visiting. She had to be the one to come to him instead when before everything it was always him who came first. It was always him who sought out the cold embrace of the moon.

She didn’t knew why, but she felt something was coming for her.

She stared at the entrance as if someone or something would magically appeared. yet the only thing that was present was the cool air of the cavern.

The Wild Hunt was not the only thing coming…

“Alright, we’re here” Stated Jahoda as she leaned against the large metal container next to the railing overlooking the doc while you, Paimon and Aino approached.

“But, I don’t see Krum-Clang anywhere!” Whined Aino after running up to the railing and peeking over the edge, her eyes searching between everyone, worker or other wise coming and going. “Did you lie to me again, dumpster-diver?” Crossing her arms, the young girl glared at Jahoda.

“Have some patience, and hear the professional out.” Sighed the blond, Pushing herself forward from the giant container. “Now, Aino’s style is super unique. When one of her creations shows up for sale, you can be sure that people will know who it belongs to.” She began.

“You might look like an easy target, but everyone knows you’ve got me and my boss behind you. Point it there’s not a single person in Nod-Krai who’d steal one of your bots and sell it on the regular black market… Not an above-board one, anyway. but an illegal black market like this… That’s another matter.” She stated, a small scoff escaping her lips when she finished.

“Wait, but… aren’t all black markets illegal?” Asked your white haired companion.

“Maybe, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any rules. My boss sets ‘em, and there are people who follow them and people who don’t. And that market over there? Yeah, that’s where the rule breakers go to make deals.” She pointed out towards the doc below. “And based on the intel I have, this market deals most exclusively in mechanical constructs. Ring any bells?” Smirked Jahoda, turning towards the trio.

Letting out a small gasp in amazement, Paimon clasped her hands together. “You’re a genius Jahoda! But, um… There’s no one here…” Trailing off, both her and Aino’s face dropped a little after noticing the lack of people and mechanical parts being handled.

“The key to a market like this is operating in secret. There’s no chance it runs every day. I asked around my circle, and it seems like our next chance to check it out is in two days’ time.” The blond girl Explained.

“We have to wait two days!?” Aino exclaimed.

“Eh, that’s nothin’. Even if your bot’s on its last legs, two days ain’t gonna change much.” Jahoda shrugged casually.

The pink haired girl pouted in response. “Now, listen up! Krum-Clank belongs to my workshop! I’m the boss, and no bot of mine is getting hurt on my watch!” Huffing and crossing her arms, Aino turned to stare at the doc below.

‘Sheesh, this kid’s got a temper. Maybe I should apologize…? No wait, I’m not about to be intimidated by some squirt…’ Jahoda thought.

right… Ineffa did mention the poor girl built Clink-Clank Craftshop al on her own, and she interacts with robots more than people most days. These bots really must be everything…

“Hey, Aino.” Calling out gently, you stepped forward a little and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Sitting around for two whole days doing nothing is going to be hard for you. But I promise it’ll be ok. How about I buy you some sweets later?” Then the girl looked at you and you put on your kid-friendly smile. “Just don’t tell Ineffa ok?” You gave her a small wink.

“…Really?” Her eyes lit up, albeit a lot less than before and nodding in response, as you kept smiling. Though the last thing you expected her to do is give you a hug all of a sudden.

She honestly reminded you of people like Klee, Nahida, Sayu and all the other kids you’ve met. Before this, you thought you hated kids. But now? It almost felt like second-nature.

Even know your heart pangs just imagining all the innocent eyes looking up at you asking you when you’d come back to play again while you had to smile and lie right to their faces.

The only exception begin Nahida since she could literally read minds. You know she still watched you even after you told her not to and that you would not be coming back, yet she couldn’t help it.

Though through the corner of your eye you spotted the jealous look on Paimon’s face and made you unable to hold in a soft chuckle…

Chapter Text

Sitting stiffly on one of the seats near a more quite corner of the bar, furthest from any prying eyes or ears from where the bartender usually sat, your eyes locked on your glass of alcohol and your thumbs fiddled with the rim. You weren’t sure why Nefer wanted to personally meet you do badly and why Jahoda seemed a little shaken even it she tried to hide it.

Nothing made sense… And you thought Nefer would’ve been more.. smarter, more subtle or even trick you, but no, she just asked directly through Jahoda.

Was it something to do with the chaos starting to spread around Nasha Town? Sure, it wasn’t exactly much in terms of the beginnings of other riots in Nod-Krai but still…

Glancing around the bar, your eyes searched for any green heads wondering about.

“Soo…. what do you think Nefer wanted you here so badly for?” Asked Paimon after floating closer to you and sipped from her glass apple juice.

However you only shrug in response, your eyes still darting around for any signs of the woman until it finally caught on the familiar…. Snake lady? Or was it Cat? Was Nefer even related to any animal other then maybe loosely basing her appearance off them?

Well, whatever the she was, the only thing going through your mind at the moment is trying to figure out what on Celestia happened.

Spotting you almost immediately, Nefer began approaching you with her usual confidence, her presence alone already making a few patrons look away or sink down in their seats. Though that facade quickly dropped along with her signature smugness with another more serious version as soon as she was far enough from the rest as she took a seat adjacent to both of you, only then did you notice the eyebags.

“Wondering why I brought you here, huh? Well, I’m not going to beat around the bush given the seriousness.” She stated. “While normally I wouldn’t exactly be trusting someone even like you, I don’t have much of a choice.” Explained the woman, albeit a little reluctantly. ”So, answer me, do you know about the ‘The Black Ooz’ that’s been going around the edge of the town as of late?”

You stiffened almost immediately, your eyes wide.

No, no… This can’t be…

“’The Black Ooz’? Is it some kind of black smile like thingy with blue or red eyes?” Paimon tilted her head at her before she placed her small hand on her chin as she thought back.

“Blue or… red…?” Raising an eyebrow, Neffer couldn’t help but lean a little closer. “So, you do know huh…” She muttered to herself more than anything. “But, your description doesn’t match the reports, at least not fully. I’ve only ever gotten one single report of it having red eyes while every other talks about blue or yellow. But the main thing is, whatever ‘The Black Ooz’ is, it’s already killed it’s fair share of travelers.” Nefer replied.

Paimon gasped

“I don’t know everything, nor do I even remember much myself in the first place but, it’s been after me ever since I first started my journey.” You finally spoke up yet your eyes remained locked to you glass. “I don’t exactly know how but, I’m somehow connected to it. I feel what it feels and it feels what I feel say for pain.” You continued.

“Yeah, I don’t know if Aether still remembers this but we once observed that the weird slime thingy disappears for a while whenever we touch a statue of the seven or gain a new element because you mentined it feed it’s hunger.” Stated Paimon as she glanced at you and caught your eyes widening at her. “But, your memories also got fuzzier and you struggled to remember much about whatever creature that is. You didn’t seem to struggle with anything else either, just that. You even forgot it existed in the first place during Inazuma, Fontain and now here too.” She added while turning to you.

“Wait, if you knew then why didn’t you tell me?” Now it was you who was arching an eyebrow.

”You told Paimon not to when your memories of it were still intact. You said the more you remembered or thought about it the more likely it’d come back and the more powerful you became the longer it’d go away for but the stronger and more aggressive It’d come back as. Why else did you think Paimon tried so hard to steer you away from any and all hunting commissions when we first arrived?” She explained. “The only reason why I’m telling you now is because Paimon didn’t want what happened in Inazuma.”

Blinking in surprise, a quick flick of your gaze towards Nefer told you everything given she did the same, her earlier professionalism cracking slightly.

“I see…” Hummed Nefer to herself as she brought her hand up to her chin, her gold claws grazing her chin. “This is a lot more I ever expected, in just a few minutes no less. I guess that explains why it only hunted everyone with visions and animals with Kuuvahki or from the Frost Moon Scions specifically while is spared the rest. I suppose I also did do good being honest myself, though I am surprised you trusted me that easily.” She stated, though her emerald green eyes squinted at you. People weren’t very honest in Nasha town, especially not these days.

“I already learnt what happened if I don’t the hard way.” Muttering, your gaze dropping down to the table once more, Kazuha, Ayaka and Itto’s look of pure horror, Miko and Heizou’s disbelief, Ayato’s anger and everyone’s… pain… “I didn’t want you or anyone else to fight that thing completely blind just so save my own skin.”

You didn’t realize how hard your grip on your glass had increased by until Paimon put a gentle hand on your shoulder. Neffer’s eyes softened too but she still held up her own mask for now.

“I know that you might mean well, but I’m afraid I’ll have to keep a close eye on you.” She explained while you nodded meekly, already knowing it was coming.

It honestly reminded you of the house of the hearth and the siblings reaction towards the fact you and the that thing were connected. Admittedly, everything still felt a little fuzzy, especially your time before arriving in Teyvat. but you didn’t want to learn more. You never did yet you had to if your loved ones had any chance of dealing with a problem that should’ve solely been on you.

“…”

The the silence felt awkward, your mind was already preoccupied with ways to increase your powers yet again just so no more would have to deal with something that didn’t, some thing you brought.

Just then the waiter came over holding what you assumed to be Nefer’s drink.

Almost as if on instinct, your earlier nervous and shocked stiffness was replaced by your usual smile as you greeted the waiter as he placed the drink in front of the green haired woman. You almost forgot you were in a bar in a public place wit actual people who could’ve overheard each and every word that came out of your or Paimon’s mouth.

However you didn’t fret, instead you counted your lucky stars Nefer was smart enough to at least somewhat isolate you and pick a time where everyone else was drunk as Venti or busy with their own problems.

“How about we talk about something else if your not too busy? I’m sure a lighter mood will be much appreciated both now and in the future given everything that happened.” You smiled sheepishly.

And for once, she nodded, a small but noticeable smile now on her face too. You doubted she did it because she had free time and more for her own sanity to be able to have something at least somewhat normal after so long.
