Chapter Text
“For sure, some of you are full and a bit sleepy thanks to the scrumptious dinner. Thus, we will liven things a bit with an activity for the guests. I’ll give the mic to the couple.”
Whispers and chatters were heard around the venue as everyone became either excited or anxious. Sawamura and Sugawara each took a mic from the wedding host.
“Thank you, Hamaki-san.” Sawamura faced the guests. “And thank you all for coming. We will be calling out the names of who will participate and you cannot say no. I’ll start.”
“Kuroo, Iwaizumi, Ushijima, Daishou, Bokuto Aran, Asahi, Yamaguchi, Ennoshita, Kageyama, Kenma….”
Sawamura called a few more names as those mentioned dragged themselves or ran (Bokuto and Kuroo) to the stage.
“Actually, the mechanic is simple. You just have to get the…GARTER! The gist is, instead of the usual getting it, you have to spike it—since we all got to know each other through volleyball. The first one to spike it wins.”
Laughter erupted throughout the venue as the garter contestants grumbled. Despite that, everyone got ready, with Kuroo at the front. Even if he didn’t play volleyball professionally, he was very competitive. So he would like to participate as much as he could.
“Okay, ready, set…SERVE!”
Sawamura threw the garter as high as he could towards the group.
The contestants were composed of talented volleyball players both in high school and professionally. So everyone had a good chance to spike the garter.
Of course Kuroo knew that, as it was his job. Despite being competitive, Kuroo felt he was less likely to “win”. But since he was competitive and determined, he would give it his all. So imagine his surprise when he jumped up to reach the garter with all his might…and he actually spiked it. After a few seconds of silence, the guests cheered.
“Kuroo wins!”
“Wait…what?!”
Kuroo saw his fellow contestants clapping and…smiling. Even Bokuto looked really happy. A part of Kuroo felt something was off. But he didn’t dwell as Sawamura's hand clapped on his shoulder.
“Congratulations, Kuroo!”
“Uh…okay, thanks, I think. So what does this mean?”
Sawamura smirked. “You’ll see in a while. For now, go sit beside me.” Then he gestured to Sugawara.
“Great.” He read from a paper in his hand. “Tsukishima, Oikawa, Tendo, Akaashi, Kita, Noya, Yachi, Hinata…”
Every name mentioned by Sugawara all stood up…except for Tsukishima. His disdain was clearly evident in his irritated expression, as he hated these kinds of wedding activities. He went to Bokuto and Akaashi’s wedding and knew what was coming.
Despite that, Tsukishima had no choice. Sugawara was his senior and Yamaguchi, Yachi, and Noya kept nudging him. Clearly very annoyed, he rolled his eyes and stood up—much to the excitement of his Karasuno peers at the table.
“So, I will be ‘setting’ the bouquet to you and it’s up to you how you will ‘receive’ it—-block, receive, or spike. Of course, the first to receive it wins!” Sugawara turned his back to the contestants.
Tsukishima saw his fellow bouquet contestants getting ready. He rolled his eyes at the absurdness of the “competition”. However, as a pro athlete, a big part of him wanted to take this seriously because…well, he hated losing.
But this is just catching the bouquet, it’s not that serious. Besides, I won’t catch it.
Tsukishima just stood there as Sugawara started counting.
“Okay! 1, 2, 3…GO!”
Sugawara threw the bouquet towards them. Tsukishima might have imagined it, but his senpai’s angle looked like he deliberately threw the damn thing towards…him? He watched as the bouquet went in his direction and before Tsukishima could move or react, it was in his hand—-and a roar of applause and cheers echoed in the venue.
“Tsuskima wins!”
”What the actual fuck?!”
A hand clapped into his shoulder and Tsukishima saw a smiling Sugawara.
“Language, Tsukishima.”
Tsukishima’s shock left him speechless for a few seconds before saying “What just happened, Sugawara-senpai?!”
”You just caught the bouquet.”
”No, I didn’t.”
”Yes, you did. And everyone is happy.”
Tsukishima turned to his fellow bouquet contestants and saw them clapping. Yachi and Hinata were beaming with happiness, which left Tsukishima feeling uneasy.
“Well that was fun! Congratulations Kuroo-san and Tsukishima-san!” The wedding host said. Sawamura and Sugawara pushed the two men together as the crowd cheered. Kuroo smiled sheepishly, while Tsukishima scowled at the crowd. One thing was sure: both men couldn’t look each other in the eye. “As winners, you just have to do what the couple requests. Go ahead Sawamura-san and Sugawara-san.”
Sugawara laughed. “Don’t worry you two. We won’t let you do anything crazy and absurd. You just have to simply dance together with us.”
The crowd cheered as Kuroo and Tsukishima looked at each other with shocked expressions.
“Did you plan this, Kuroo-san?”Tsukishima grumbled.
“I swear, Tsukki, I know nothing about this!” Kuroo held up his hands in defense.
“Guys, you don’t have to imitate us. Just dance in any way you want.” Sawamura whispered as a slow song started in the background. “It will just be a few minutes. Give the crowd what they want.” He winked. The married couple held each other close as they started slow dancing to the music.
“This is awkward. If I knew you’d get the bouquet, I would not have spiked the garter. Though I don’t even know why I won…” Kuroo said as he rubbed his neck.
“Ugh, this is such a hassle.”
“We don’t have to do this, I can talk to Sawamura—“
Tsukishima shook his head. “No. As much as I hate this, I respect Sawamura-senpai and Sugawara-senpai.” He sighed. “Let’s just get this over with.”
“Okay, Tsukki. We don’t have to hold hands or hug to dance. It’s not as if we’re a real couple.”
Kuroo expected Tsukishima to scowl or get irritated at him. What he didn’t expect was the other man to frown at him with disappointed eyes. Before he could dwell on it, Tsukishima placed his arms on Kuroo’s shoulders and started slow dancing. Kuroo followed suit.
“Let’s just do this, Kuroo-san.”
“Is…Is it okay if I…I put my hands on your waist?”
Tsukishima blushed before looking away. “Yeah, sure.”
Kuroo slowly placed his hands on Tsukishima’s waist. He made sure to keep a distance so the younger man wouldn’t be awkward. Slowly, they both got the rhythm and swayed until it was natural. Both men glimpsed at Sawamura and Sugawara and saw them giving a thumbs up.
He glanced at Tsukishima and noticed his tense body. He was just staring behind Kuroo with his lips pressed in a thin line. Kuroo knew the other man was getting uncomfortable. “Hey Tsukki.” He said softly. “I’m sorry for this.”
Tsukishima scoffed. “It’s not your fault, Kuroo-san. I’m sure Sawamura-senpai and Sugawara-senpai and maybe even some of the crows planned this to annoy me. As to why, I don’t even know.”
Kuroo studied his friend: he was blushing, a tiny pout in his lips that showed his annoyance, and a frown forming. If it were a different situation, Kuroo would say Tsukishima was adorable. But he didn’t want to make him even more uncomfortable as he already was. Right now, Kuroo wanted his friend to feel at ease and at least enjoy the dance.
“Tsukki.” Kuroo said again softly. “Look at me.”
It took a few seconds but Tsukishima finally looked at Kuroo with pleading eyes.
“You’re too tense and I understand. I want you to breathe in, breathe out at your own pace.” Kuroo smiled. “Whenever you’re ready.
Tsukishima did as he was told for a few seconds while closing his eyes. Eventually, the creases on his forehead disappeared and his body became less tense. His arms also softened on Kuroo’s shoulders. Then he opened his eyes.
“Thanks Kuroo-san. That helped.”
“Hey, I told you many times. Just call me Kuroo. We’re close friends, we’re way past the formalities.”
“Yeah, sorry. Force of habit.”
“Tsukki.”
“Mmmm.”
“Don’t focus on the people around us. Shut them out, so you can at least enjoy this moment. If you’re still uncomfortable, just…just look at me instead. You may not like my messy rooster head, but my face can help keep you at ease.” He rubbed soothing circles on Tsukishima’s waist.
Tsukishima scoffed. “Idiot.” But he smiled.
“Hey, for what it’s worth, you still look handsome despite being stressed.”
Tsukishima lightly slapped Kuroo’s shoulder. “Ugh, stop it Kuroo. Be thankful you’re not part of this shenanigan or I won’t talk to you for a long time.”
Since then, Kuroo and Tsukishima have been focused on each other. They slowly danced to the music. It was like they were in their own world as they talked softly, their expressions changing. Kuroo smiled before saying something that made Tsukishima frown. After a minute, Tsukishima rolled his eyes, making Kuroo laugh softly. They were just talking, expressions changing from smiling to mocking to teasing to flustered…and so much more. Afterwards, Kuroo and Tsukishima stared at each other without saying anything for a long time.
They were broken out of their reverie when someone tapped on their shoulders. Apparently, the music stopped and the host said thank you. Yet, both men didn’t stop dancing. It was like Kuroo and Tsukishima broke from a spell as they looked at the married couple.
After realizing it was over, they reluctantly let go and smiled, not saying anything. Kuroo and Tsukishima stared, then went back to their respective tables. They took their seats and glanced again at each other before facing the stage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The after-party started right after the reception. Most older guests (family and relatives) left the venue already and those who remained were the high school volleyball teams’ alumni.
Daichi and Sugawara wanted to spend more time with friends without the formalities of the ceremony and reception. Thus, the after-party was full of booze, different finger food, and dance music. Everyone mingled with each other and things were as informal as anyone would imagine. With no family and relatives to stop them, everyone’s inhibitions flew out the window as they ate, drank, and danced the night away.
No one was exempted from this crazy after-party. Everyone would let loose from everything, whether it was work, relationships, adult life, or just about anything. Nevertheless, even from the start, it looked like it was going to be one hell of a chaotic after-party.
Two hours in and almost everyone was on the dance floor with glasses of alcohol in their hands, the grooms dancing crazily in the middle with the remaining guests.
Kuroo wasn’t in the mood to dance from the start though. Instead, he socialized with his fellow high school alumni. After a while, he excused himself to get food at the bar. Kuroo glanced around to see everyone either slumped on the tables, dancing, eating, or just mingling with the others. His eyes roamed for a glimpse of blond hair, but couldn’t find it.
Most of the Karasuno team are on the dance floor, so Tsukishima might be there too. I didn’t see if he’s drinking, though he said before the reception that he wouldn’t drink because of his low tolerance. Well, knowing him, he would stay true to that. I’ll let him enjoy the party with his friends.
He was drinking vodka. It was his go-to drink when he wanted to feel a bit tipsy, but not too drunk to the point that he wouldn’t remember what happened. Kuroo had a high tolerance for alcohol and drank a lot. Despite that, he was still feeling okay.
When he got to the table near the bar, he saw Bokuto, Akaashi, and Kenma sitting. Bokuto’s head was slouched on Akaashi’s shoulder and his eyes were closed. He was hugging him tightly as if his life depended on it. The younger man had his arm around his husband, his face indicating that he was used to this.
“Bokuto’s drunk, isn’t he?”
Akaashi nodded. “Nothing new. He’s already a hugger and emotional to begin with. But when he’s drunk, he wouldn’t even want me to get water for him. So I’m stuck here.
“More boozzzzzzzze!” Bokuto yelled, lifting his head up.
“You’ve had a lot already, Kou. I think that’s enough for now. We can go back to the room—“
“NO!” He shouted, surprising Kuroo and Kenma, as well as others from another table. Though, Akaashi was left unfazed. “You’re not going anywhere, stay here Keijiiii, don’t leave me pleaseeeeee. I don't know what I’d do if you gooooo. I can’t leave without youuuu!”
Akaashi sighed, though he caressed Bokuto’s back gently. “I’m not going anywhere, Kou.”
Bokuto smiled as he laid his head on Akaashi’s shoulder and closed his eyes. Then he hugged him even tighter that Kuroo was surprised Akaashi was still breathing. “Yesssss, stayyyyyy. I love you, Keiji.”
“I love you, Kou.”
“You know Keiji, I really love that you cook for me—-“
Kuroo knew that was a sign for him to help Akaashi get Bokuto’s water. He went to the bar and got three glasses of water and one glass of vodka, then went back to the table.
“Here.” He said as he placed the water in front of Bokuto and Akaashi.
“Thanks, Kuroo.”
“Kenma.” He placed another glass in front of his best friend. “Drink water. You’re drunk and you easily get dehydrated when that happens.”
Kenma raised an eyebrow at Kuroo. “I’m not drunk, Kuroo.” Though he drank it in one big gulp.
“Righhht. And I’m rich.” Kuroo took a swig of his drink.
“Hey, how come you’re not drunk? How are you still standing?”
“I have a high tolerance for alcohol, Kenma. It comes with my job.” Kuroo said as he took another sip. To be honest, he was already feeling a bit tipsy, but still sober enough to be aware.
“Hey, Kuroo.”
“Yes, Akaashi?”
“How are you doing?”
“What do you mean?”
Akaashi raised an eyebrow at him before his eyes roamed around the venue. It finally landed on someone—and Kuroo followed it. His eyes widened when he saw Tsukishima dancing with his fellow crows, a glass of alcohol in his hand, laughing out loud. It was the first time Kuroo saw him really let loose ever since he became busy with his recent museum work. He looked so carefree and happy, enjoying the night with his closest friends. It made Kuroo smile.
“Earth to Kuroo.” Kenma called out.
“Huh?”
“Yup, Kuroo’s totally whipped for Tsukishima.” Kenma said.
“Wha—?! No, I’m not.” Kuroo clapped back. “I’m…I’m just surprised that Tsukki’s drinking. He said earlier he won’t do that. I’m not whipped as you say it.”
It was Kenna’s turn to raise an eyebrow at Kuroo. “Uh-huh. And I’m broke.”
Akaashi, on the other hand, just stared at Kuroo with inquisitive eyes that made him a bit uncomfortable.
“Kuroo, what happened there between you and Tsukishima earlier?”
“What do you mean?”
“The dance, you know, with Daichi and Sugawara. Where you both won the games.”
Kuroo freezed at taking a sip of his drink for a second before he chuckled.
“What about it? We just danced because the couple requested it. There’s nothing to it.”
Akaashi and Kenma sighed.
“Kuroo…” Akaashi started. “The moment you and Tsukishima danced, it was like you were both in your own world. You were so into each other that you both didn’t notice that the dance ended. Daichi and Sugawara had to tell you it was over. Everyone noticed it too. It’s like we were not even here.”
Kuroo stared at his friends in disbelief, denying everything. He was careful at that dance, making sure that they were both casual. But it looked like it failed. Though he wasn’t going to admit that to his friends. Kuroo laughed. “What are you talking about?! Is this your way of pranking me or something? Plus, you don’t have proof.”
“Ah, proof you say…” Kenma smirked as he got his phone out and fumbled something on the screen. Kuroo felt a bucket of ice had been splattered on him when Kenma showed him a video “This is what the same-day edit video didn’t show earlier. I’m a YouTuber and a streamer, Kuroo. I do videos for a living. You think I wouldn’t capture this moment.”
Kuroo watched the video, where he and Tsukishima were facing each other and dancing to the soft music in the background together. Throughout the dance, everyone was cheering. But as it continued, the guests became silent as Kuroo and Tsukishima stared at each other without saying anything.
After the video ended, Kuroo sat down dumbfounded at what he saw, taking a long sip of his drink before placing it on the table. Kuroo never knew some (if not all) noticed it too. “Shit.”
“Okay, I think he realizes it now.” Akaashi said.
“Kenma, delete that video.”
“Nope, Kuroo. I won’t. And you know, deep down, you don’t want me to delete it.”
Akaashi sighed as he fixed his position to make Bokuto comfortable on his shoulder. “Kuroo, we know how in love you are with Tsukishima. You have been pining for him since high school. Plus, it’s been more than three years since you ALMOST confessed to him. Isn’t it time you confess your feelings to him now? It’s pretty obvious you both like each other.”
Kuroo hated it when Akaashi lectured him about his feelings for Tsukishima. He didn’t hate it because he didn’t like it. He hated it because he knew, deep down, Akaashi was right. Still, a part of him didn’t want to believe it. “What if you’re wrong, Akaashi? Tsukki has a lot on his plate now—his museum work, his volleyball career with Sendai Frogs, his family, his Karasuno friends. He doesn’t need a love life or someone like me to complicate his life now.”
“How do you know? Did you ask him?”
“I—“ Kuroo stuttered, unable to argue with his friend.
“I rest my case.” Akaashi said. “Don’t let this pining thing between you and Tsukishima go on longer than it already has. If you don’t do anything, you might lose Tsukishima for good. And you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
“Kuroo and Tsukki??” Bokuto perked up and looked at Akaashi. “Keijiiiii did they get together alreadyyy?!” Then he glanced sleepily at Kuroo. “Dude, did ya confess your feelings alreadyyyy? That dance earlier was sooooo…intimate. And maybe intense.. Everyone could feel there was really something between you two.” He hiccuped. “When you two get togetherrrr, I should be the first to know, okaaaaayyyy?” Then he laid back on Akaashi and closed his eyes.
Kenma and Akaashi chuckled, while Kuroo shook his head—though he had an amused look on his face.
“See, even Bokuto knows.” Kenma said with a smirk.
“Koutaro may be drunk, but even he knows about you two. There’s no denying it.”
Kuroo sighed. There’s no point denying it in front of his friends. But still…
“I’m afraid.”
“We would be surprised if you weren’t.” Kenma said.
“And it’s normal to be afraid, Kuroo. It means you care so much about what happens next because you want it to end well.” Akaashi added. “If you weren’t scared, then what’s the point in loving Tsukishima?”
He sighed as he watched the people on the dance floor. Kuroo still saw the blond head amongst the people surrounding him---though Tsukishima’s face wasn’t visible anymore. While Akaashi, Bokuto, and Kenma were right, he wanted to let Tsukishima enjoy this night with his friends. Kuroo will talk to him tomorrow.
“Tomorrow.”
“Hmmm?”
“I’ll talk to Tsukki tomorrow, when we’re both sober. Tonight’s one crazy night, I don’t think it’s a proper setting for a confession.
Akaashi nodded. “Alright, just make sure you do talk to him. Or you’ll get another lecture from us.”
They spent the remainder of the night talking, eating, and drinking together. Just like Kuroo, Akaashi also had a high tolerance for alcohol, so he didn’t get as drunk as Bokuto. The latter woke up and had another glass of tequila, much to Akaashi’s dismay. Kenma, on the other hand, took some sips of alcohol, with Kuroo bringing him water in between.
Kuroo was already a few glasses in when he felt the alcohol really kicking in and decided to stop at the next one. He could still stand straight, but he knew he would have a major hangover the next morning.
Some alumni from different schools also joined the Karasuno team on the dance floor. Kuroo saw Tsukishima dancing and laughing with Yamaguchi and Hinata, another (how many glasses did he have) glass of alcohol in his hand.
Hahaha so much for not drinking tonight, Tsukki.
Another hour passed and Kuroo finished his next--and last--glass. He looked around the venue: some had either gone home or went straight to their resort rooms. It was also a sign for Kuroo to freshen up and rest.
“Kuroo, Kou and I are going to go back to our room. He's totally drunk now.” Akaashi said, pointing to his husband sleeping on his shoulder.
“Do you need help?”
“Nah, I can manage.” Akaashi nudged Bokuto. “Kou, babe, wake up. Let’s go back to our room.”
Bokuto blinked sleepily. “Huh? Party’s over?”
“Yeah, time to hit the sack.”
“Awww I was having fun.” Akaashi, Kuroo, and Kenma chuckled softly at this statement.
“Come on.” Akaashi placed Bokuto’s arm on his shoulder and supported him by the waist.
“Kuroo, I’ll go as well.” Kenma said as he took a last gulp of water. “I still have to schedule some posts on my social media accounts before I sleep.”
Kuroo stood up. “Alright, can you walk straight?”
Kenma raised an eyebrow. “I’m just drunk. Not injured.” He stared at his best friend from head to toe. “I think you’re the one who can’t walk straight. You’re wobbling a bit.”
Kuroo laughed. “I’m fine. I’m tipsy, but I can still walk. How about Hinata?”
“He said he wanted to be with the crows for the night. We’ll just see each other tomorrow.”
“Alright, you guys go ahead. I’ll stay here for a few minutes” Kuroo said. Akaashi and Kenma looked at him warily. “I won’t do anything stupid, okay. I’ll stay, then say my goodbyes eventually.”
“Okay.”
Akaashi and Kenma said their goodbyes to Daichi and Sugawara, as well as to the rest of the Karasuno team and the other remaining alumni.
Kuroo looked around the venue and smiled as he saw those from different schools mingle with each other. Despite having their own lives, everyone came on this special occasion to celebrate the union of a wonderful couple whom they met in a sport that they love even until now: volleyball.
Even though not everyone went pro, each person in the venue became who they were because of volleyball. The sport would always have a special place in their hearts---the same way volleyball would always be special for Kuroo.
He laughed. All those drinks were making him so sentimental and reminiscing about high school. Kuroo was so deep in his thoughts that he didn’t notice the music had died down and most people were leaving the dance floor. He walked towards Daichi and Sugawara, who were talking to the events coordinator. Kuroo waited for them to finish before approaching the couple.
“Kuroo!” Daichi called out happily as he hugged the former Nekoma captain. Kuroo also hugged Sugawara.
“Congratulations again, you two! Finally! I have been waiting for this to happen.”
Daichi laughed out loud and Kuroo knew he was drunk already. “Yes yes! I don’t want to let go of Suga anymore, so might as well marry him!”
Sugawara slapped his husband on the shoulder. “Hey! You were the one who begged me to get back together when we once broke up.”
“Honey, don’t make me look bad in front of Kuroo.” Daichi said as he blushed. “Anyway, thank you for being one of our groomsmen and for coming to the wedding. It means so much to both of us.”
“Hey, it was nothing. Anything for both of you.”
Daichi and Sugawara glanced behind Kuroo before their eyes roamed around the venue. “You’re alone?”
“Yeah. Akaashi, Bokuto, and Kenma went back to their rooms already.”
Daichi and Sugawara looked at each other as if something was not going according to plan, which left Kuroo a bit confused.
“Is something wrong?”
“Oh, ah nothing.” Sugawara said.
“We just thought that something didn’t go as planned in the event. But we might talk to the coordinator about it.” Sawamura added.
“Oh, I hope it’s nothing serious.” Kuroo asked, concerned.
“Anyway, we’ll let you rest, Kuroo. It has been a long day. We’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Sure! Again congratulations!” Kuroo said as he placed his hands on both Daichi’s and Sugawara’s shoulders.
“Thanks Kuroo. Oh by the way, we might have lunch tomorrow with the other guests. You can join us.”
“Sure, I would love to. I hope I won’t have a major hangover.”
“Ah yeah, we hope so too. Anyway, we—-“
“Kuroo-san? Thank god you’re still here…and you’re not drunk!”
The three men turned around to see Yamaguchi sprinting towards them.
“Yamaguchi? What is it?” Kuroo asked, then realized Tsukishima wasn’t with him. “Where’s Tsukki? Is he alright?”
“He’s fine. It’s just that…” Yamaguchi panted as he supported himself with his knees. “I think you should just come with me to see for yourself.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After saying goodbye to the married couple, Kuroo followed Yamaguchi to a table and finally understood why he was distraught.
Tsukishima had his head on his arms by the table. His blazer and necktie hanging on the chair and an empty glass on his hand.
“Let me guess, Yamaguchi---Tsukki’s drunk?”
“Yeah Kuroo-san. And I mean, really drunk. He said before the reception that he wasn’t drinking. The next thing I knew, he had a glass of tequila on his hand and was on the dance floor with everyone. I tried to stop him from drinking. But a lot of things happened, so I wasn’t able to keep track of his glasses.”
Kuroo walked towards Tsukishima and kneeled down to take a closer look of how he was. He couldn’t see his face since it was covered by his arm, but he knew the younger man was still awake.
“You need my help to bring him to your room?”
“Well…I appreciate the help, but I can bring him to our room myself. That isn’t the reason why I called you though.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Just…” Yamaguchi nodded his head towards Tsukishima, urging Kuroo to talk to him.
Kuroo softly nudged Tsukishima’s arm. “Hey, Tsukki. Are you okay? It’s time to go.”
Tsukishima groaned. “I said I’m not going with you, Yamaguchi.”
“Tsukki, it’s Kuroo. We have to go.”
Tsukishima’s head snapped up, which made Kuroo jump. Upon closer look, Kuroo saw that he didn’t wear his glasses and his face was red. Then, to his surprise, Tsukishima pouted.
“Kuroooo, you’re here. What took you so looonggg?” Tsukishima said in a slurred voice.
“I…I was at the party the whole time, I didn’t leave. Though I was with Bokuto, Akaashi, and Kenma.”
“Why didn’t you join us on the dance floor? I was looking for youuuu.”
“Uh, you were having fun with friends, I didn’t want to impose.”
Tsukishima mumbled something that Kuroo couldn’t understand before dropping his head on his arm again. Kuroo was about to stand up when a firm hand held his wrist.
“Stay, Kuroo. Don’t go.”
“Uhm, okay.” Tsukishima’s eyes were closed, but his firm grip on Kuroo’s hand didn’t loosen. In fact, he didn’t let go at all. So the former captain had no choice but to kneel again. “I’m confused Yamaguchi, what did you need me for?”
Yamaguchi sighed before rolling his eyes. “I swear. Anyway, as you saw, Tsukki responded when he saw you here.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Earlier, I told him we’re going back to the room so he could rest. He didn’t want to go unless…”
“Unless?”
“…unless you bring him to our room. In short, Tsukki requested for you, Kuroo-san.”
“What? Why?”
“I don’t know. Just like I don’t know why he suddenly drank so much tonight. I’m as surprised as you are.”
Kuroo glanced at Tsukishima, who was breathing steadily but mumbling something incoherent.
“I think we can ask questions later. Let’s bring Tsukki to your room first.”
Yamaguchi nodded. Kuroo nudged Tsukishima carefully. “Tsukki, can you still walk? Let’s get you to your room now.
Tsukishima lifted his head. “What? Yes I can walk, Kuroo.” He suddenly stood up, but he swayed and staggered on his feet. Kuroo caught him with his arms. He fell forward and landed on the older man’s chest.
“Okay, I don’t think you can walk on your own.” Kuroo looked at Yamaguchi. “Is it okay if I carry Tsukki on my back?”
“Yeah, it’s fine. I’ll bring his things.”
Kuroo lowered himself and, with Yamaguchi’s help, he carried Tsukishima on his back. He could feel him breathing on his neck and it made Kuroo shudder.
“Kuroo, stay, don’t go.”
“I’m just here, Tsukki.”
“Mmmm.” The younger man mumbled before his breathing became steady again.
“Is Tsukishima alright?”
Kuroo turned around to see Daichi and Sugawara approaching them.
“Yeah, just super drunk.” Yamaguchi said, shaking his head. “I swear I don’t know what has gotten into him tonight.”
Daichi shrugged. “Well, you never know. Something might have happened that made him suddenly drink.”
Yamaguchi gave Kuroo a knowing and disapproving look that made him confused, before exchanging glances at the married couple. “Probably.”
“Anyway, thanks for coming again. We’ll see you all at lunch tomorrow—that is, if everyone can overcome their hangovers.” Daichi laughed.
“Thanks, you two.” Kuroo said as he adjusted himself to make sure Tsukishima didn't fall off. Despite gaining muscles, the younger man was still light.
“Let’s go, Yamaguchi.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a long walk from the reception hall to the rooms as they were located at the opposite ends of the resort. Kuroo and Yamaguchi were just catching up on their lives in their few minutes of walking when it was interrupted by a stirring from Tsukishima.
“Yamaguchi, wait. Tsukki’s moving.”
Both men stopped as they waited for Tsukishima to be still again. However, he kept making light movements with his arms and upper body, as if adjusting himself in his position. After a few minutes, he stopped. Kuroo felt Tsukishima’s chin near his neck, arms still hanging loosely on his shoulders. Just when Kuroo thought it was okay to walk again, he tensed up when he felt a deep inhale and a light tickle on the crook of his neck.
“Kuroo…” A soft, gentle voice whispered in his ear. It sent shivers on Kuroo’s body and he couldn’t help but gulp at the feeling.
“Tsukki? Go back to sleep. We’ll be in your room in a few minutes.” Kuroo stared straight ahead, while Yamaguchi stood still in his position, not even looking at him. He felt Tsukishima take another deep breath on his neck—as if he was smelling him.
“You smell good, Kuroo. Smells nice.” Tsukki said in a soft voice before inhaling again.
The action sent more shivers to Kuroo’s body. It took all of his willpower not to crumble as the younger man unintentionally made him weak on the knees. Of course, it didn’t help that Kuroo was madly, deeply in love with Tsukishima. Kuroo glanced at Yamaguchi and saw his shoulders shaking. He scowled as he realized that Yamaguchi was stifling a laugh, mocking his predicament. Here I thought I could ask for a little help. He took a small deep breath to compose himself before replying with a chuckle. “Most likely it’s my cologne. Used it just for this event coz it was expensive. Sis gave it to me.”
“Mmmm…no, not the cologne.” Then Kuroo felt Tsukishima’s chin move and soon, the tip of his nose touched his neck. He took another deep inhale, smelling him like there was no tomorrow.
Ah. This is too much. Please stop this, Tsukki… Kuroo gripped his hold a bit tighter on Tsukishima, but not too much to hurt him.
“Smells like the night, chill breeze, when everything is quiet. You know like in the mountains or the city, the night breeze is always calm. Yeah. It makes you relaxed and at ease.” Tsukishima took another deep inhale. “Your smell makes me more relaxed and calm. I like it.”
Kuroo froze, wondering if Tsukishima was saying those words out of his own accord or because he was just super drunk. He was so stunned that he couldn’t think of anything to retort back. Instead Kuroo just nodded and said a small “Mmmm.”
Tsukishima became silent after that and his chin finally rested on Kuroo’s shoulder, his breathing becoming steady.
He and Yamaguchi thought it was over as Kuroo felt the younger man starting to doze off. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around Kuroo’s neck.
What the hell…Why is this happening to me?? Kuroo staggered a bit and yelped out of shock. It was a good thing Yamaguchi caught him by the arm to steady himself.
“Tsukki? Are you okay?”
Yamaguchi must have seen something in Tsukishima’s expression because he glanced at Kuroo with knowing eyes. Then, he turned around again and walked a bit farther from them. Kuroo followed him in small, slow steps to keep Tsukishima steady on his back.
“Why did you leave?” The younger man said in a voice that sounded like he was pouting. He gripped tighter onto Kuroo.
“Huh? I didn’t leave Tsukki. I was at the party, but with Bokuto, Akaashi, and Kenma.” Kuroo didn't know why he was defending himself. But he always felt he had to when it came to Tsukishima.
“I was looking for you, but didn’t see you at the party. I couldn’t find you…”
“Why were you looking for me, Tsukki?”
“I needed—wanted—you to be there with me, having fun…with everyone…”
Kuroo scoffed before slightly shaking his head. “You don’t need me there, Tsukki. You were with your friends, you were having fun…laughing with them. I’d just ruin your fun…you know, being an old man and all.” He let out a soft chuckle.
Tsukishima let out a big, heavy sigh, as if growing tired of something. There was a minute of silence before he spoke in a frustrated voice. “Why are you like that, Kuroo?”
“Like what?”
“Assuming…”
“Assuming…?”
Tsukishima was silent again for a minute before he spoke up. But this time, there was a cold, sad, and annoyed tone in his voice.
“Assuming that I don’t need or want you. Assuming that you’d ruin the fun for me. Assuming that I don’t like you around. Assuming that you’re a burden to me.” Tsukishima’s voice was quivering that it made Kuroo stop walking. The younger man’s arms became even tighter around his neck, though not enough to choke him. “Did you even bother to ask what I think? We’ve known each other for years, yet you never even asked me what I feel about…” He trailed off as Kuroo stayed silent, undecided whether to ask or not about what Tsukishima meant. “Whatever. Nevermind, Kuroo.”
Kuroo was about to put Tsukishima down and talk to him when he felt the arms around him loosen and slump on his shoulders. Then, he heard Tsukishima’s steady breathing and a small soft snore.
“Yamaguchi…” Kuroo whispered. “Is Tsukki already asleep?”
Yamaguchi walked closer, eyes worried. Then he checked on his best friend. After whispering his name and softly nudging his arm, he nodded. “Yup, he’s asleep, Kuroo-san.” Yamaguchi said as he turned around. “We should go, so Tsukki can rest. So we can all rest. It has been a long night.”
Kuroo nodded before heaving a sigh of relief…though it didn’t make him feel any better. In fact, that conversation left him with a heavy feeling as Tsukishima’s words replayed in his head.
“Did you even bother to ask what I think? We’ve known each other for years, yet you never even asked me what I feel about…”
Then, Akaashi’s words from earlier also came to mind. How do you know? Did you ask him?
They were more than halfway through the main hallway towards their rooms. As Kuroo followed Yamaguchi, he stayed quiet and went deep in his thoughts. Both Akaashi’s and Tsukishima’s words weighed on him heavily, like an anchor pulling him down to the depths of the sea.
On one hand, he didn’t want to bring his hopes up because those words meant that he had a chance with Tsukishima. That maybe, just maybe, Tsukishima also had feelings for him. But, on the other hand, in those years of falling in love with Tsukishima, not once did Kuroo think that he would reciprocate his feelings. He felt it was just one-sided.
Why?
Because Kuroo saw Tsukishima being happy in the things that he had: his love for dinosaurs, his studies, his love for volleyball, his Sendai Frogs career, his museum work, his Karasuno friends, his older brother, and his mother. As what he said to Akaashi earlier, Kuroo didn’t want to add himself in Tsukishima’s life because there was too much on his plate already. There was no room for a Kuroo Tetsurou in Tsukishima Kei’s life.
And all these years, Kuroo believed that. Which was why he didn’t pursue confessing to Tsukihima three years ago. Or why he continued being a close friend instead who was always there for him. Which was why despite having that intimate slow dance at the reception earlier, Kuroo never approached or talked to Tsukishima again after. Or why he kept his distance from the younger man earlier in the after party even though he desperately wanted to dance and get closer with him. Which was why he questioned Tsukishima earlier in their conversation about looking for him. Or why Kuroo said that he would just ruin the fun for Tsukishima if he joined him and everyone else.
Then, as he listed those whys in his head, he knew that those were just excuses so he wouldn’t face the inevitable. Despite drinking a lot, he was wide awake and his mind was clear—maybe even clearer.
Akaashi was right (again): Kuroo should at least talk to Tsukishima as soon as he was sober enough tomorrow. If he didn’t do anything, he might lose Tsukishima for good and regret it for the rest of his life. Whatever the outcome of their talk will be, Kuroo would accept it. The important thing was to do what he should have done a long time ago.
Kuroo was so deep in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Yamaguchi calling him until he tapped his shoulder.
“We’re here, Kuroo.”
“Huh? Oh, okay.”
Yamaguchi opened the door and went in first while Kuroo adjusted Tsukishima on his back.
“What the fuck…?!”
Yamaguchi's sudden swearing startled Kuroo and he did his best to enter the room quickly without waking up Tsukishima. "Yamaguchi, what happened?" Kuroo whispered.
He groaned in frustration before facing Kuroo.
“We have a problem. See for yourself.” Yamaguchi stepped back for Kuroo, his hands on his hips. “In the meantime, while you're here and we’re trying to find a solution, you can put Tsukki down on the couch.”
Kuroo slowly walked inside and when he had a clear view of the rest of the room, his eyes widened. In the middle were two queen-sized beds separated by a table in between. And on those beds were four heavily drunk and sleeping Karasuno alumni: Hinata and Kageyama were on a bed near the door while Asahi and Nishinoya were on the other one. The only empty sleeping area was the long gray couch beside the balcony door.
“Oh…” Was all Kuroo said as he carefully laid Tsukishima on the couch. “What happened here??”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.” Yamaguchi said as he paced the room, a hand on his chin.
“How did they get in here? Don’t you have the keycard to the room?”
“I do. But so does Kageyama. The wedding preparations happened here yesterday. So Kageyama and I were assigned the two keycards.” Yamaguchi sighed. “I think Asahi and Noya were too drunk to find their room. What a hassle. I planned for Tsukki to take the bed where they are now and I’ll sleep on the couch. He needs to rest comfortably and the couch won’t give him that.”
As Yamaguchi was deep in thought for a solution, Kuroo noticed how caring he was with Tsukishima, thinking of his comfort before his own.
This is where he realized that, since their high school days, Tsukishima was spoiled and well-cared for by his loved ones—whether they were Akiteru, his mother, his fellow Crows, Akaashi and Bokuto, his fellow Sendai Frogs teammates Kyoutani and Kogane, or maybe even his co-workers at the Sendai City Museum.
And Kuroo believed that he was not an exception to that. For the past years that they have known each other, Kuroo had always “spoiled” Tsukishima in different ways, even when he wasn’t aware of some of them before.
It all started with calling him to help them block and, eventually, mentoring him on his blocking during the Tokyo Summer Training Camp---despite being in rival teams. Then as the years went by, Kuroo would ask Tsukishima how he was once in a while, even when he went to college.
On his high school graduation, Kuroo gifted Tsukishima a pair of the latest Sony headphones. When he found out that Tsukishima became a professional volleyball player with the Sendai Frogs, he ordered the best strawberry shortcake in Sendai City and sent it to his apartment. On his college graduation, Kuroo gave a branded sports duffle bag. If Kuroo wasn’t able to give gifts, he would see to it that he would ask Tsukishima how he was doing.
Then, of course, there were those tickets for the National Museum of Nature and Science and to the dinosaur and fossil exhibit when Tsukishima was in Tokyo for work five months ago. And recently, some hangouts here and there that were Kuroo’s treat. He made sure that Tsukishima only got the best in everything, whether in material things or in actions.
Tomorrow, when Kuroo would talk to Tsukishima and tell him his feelings, whether the outcome would be good or bad, he would never, ever stop “spoiling” Tsukishima. Because Tsukishima would always be precious to him, just as he was always precious to his loved ones. He was delicate, something to be really taken care of. But most of all, Tsukishima deserved to be spoiled by everyone in his life.
And right at that moment, Kuroo would spoil Tsukishima by helping Yamaguchi with his problem.
“Yamaguchi, I can help you.”
Yamaguchi looks up. “Really? Anything would do.”
“My room is not far away from here and it has a single queen-sized bed since I’m the only one sleeping there. You and Tsukki can sleep there for the meantime, so you can both rest well tonight. You don’t have to wake up early, rest as much as you need.”
”Oh…but where will you sleep, Kuroo-san?”
“I can sleep on the couch. I don’t mind, I’ll ask for an extra blanket and pillow from the front desk.”
”Are you sure? We don’t want to hassle you.”
Kuroo shook his head as he smiled. “The Crows are never a hassle to me. Besides, it’s important that you and Tsukishima are comfortable—especially when it has been a long and crazy night.”
Yamaguchi’s eyes darted from Tsukishima to Kuroo before they landed on the four drunk Crows sleeping on the beds.
“Wait here, Kuroo-san.”
Kuroo watched as Yamaguchi got something from the closet.
“Here.” Yamaguchi handed him a backpack.
“What’s this?”
“Since Tsukki will sleep in your room, here are his change of clothes, phone, earbuds, glasses, water jug, slippers, toiletries, and his skincare products.”
Kuroo blinked as he processed what Yamaguchi said. “Whaaat.” He said in a low voice so as not to wake up the others. “I’m offering it to both of you, Yamaguchi. In case it wasn’t clear, you can both sleep in my room.”
“Oh, it was crystal clear, Kuroo, and I’m thankful for the offer. But I’m good with the couch here. Besides…” He looks at the four men on the bed fondly. “I have to look after my fellow Crows here, especially when they wake up and experience major hangovers. I’ll take care of them.”
Kuroo looked at Yamaguchi before glancing at the four Crows on the bed. Then he chuckled.
“Spoken like a true Karasuno captain.”
“Correction: former Karasuno captain.”
“Nah, once a captain, always a captain.” Kuroo said he lightly punched Yamaguchi’s arm.
Yamaguchi gave a soft laugh. “Well…you have a point, Kuroo-san. Guess we can’t help it. We still look out for our former teammates even though they have their own lives now.”
“That’s true. I still ask Kenma, Levi, Yaku, Kai, and the others how they’re doing even though we don’t hang out that much. Might be kinda embarrassing for them, but it’s fine. I just want to know if they’re okay.” Kuroo leaned on the table behind him as he wore Tsukishima’s backpack. “That’s why I’m happy to be at this wedding because I saw everyone and was able to catch up with them. Seeing them actually doing okay in person is good enough for me.”
“Yeah, I feel the same way.” Yamaguchi said in a soft voice.
“Anyway, seriously Yamaguchi, are you really sure you won’t consider my offer?”
“I’m sure, I’ll be fine.”
“Alright.”
“Just do me a favor, Kuroo-san.”
“Sure.”
“Take care of Tsukki. Make sure he rests well and is comfortable, okay? He likes wrapping himself fully with the blanket and placing two pillows on his sides. And let him sleep in, don’t wake him up. If he experiences a hangover, green or mint tea would make him feel better. He gets cranky when he wakes up, so bear with him. And…” Yamaguchi trailed off as Kuroo raised an eyebrow at him, a smirk on his face.
Yup. Spoiled and well-cared indeed.
“Again, my offer still stands, Yamaguchi.”
The younger man scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment. “Hehe…sorry about that, I couldn’t help it. But I’m not doubting you. I know Tsukki is in good hands with the captain of Nekoma High.”
Kuroo chuckled softly as he got his keycard from his pocket. He scooped Tsukishima up with his arms, making sure his head was snuggled comfortably on his chest.
“I’ll open the door for you, Kuroo-san.”
When he stood by the doorway, Yamaguchi thanked him.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t accompany you to your room. I’m feeling quite tired already.”
“It’s fine Yamaguchi, just rest well, okay? I will update you tomorrow…er…later on Tsukki.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Kuroo was already walking a few steps when he heard Yamaguchi calling him. He turned around.
“By the way, Kuroo-san, just sort of a final word.” He smirked, mischief in his eyes. “We did our part already. It’s time you and Tsukishima did yours.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The moment Kuroo laid Tsukishima on his bed, he felt his body ache—especially around the shoulders. Kuroo wasn’t exactly doing good in upper body strength since he hadn’t been doing exercises lately due to work. While Tsukishima was not that heavy, carrying him for a long time on his back and arms made his body ache even more than usual.
Don’t get him wrong: he didn’t mind carrying Tsukishima all night if it meant bringing him to a comfortable bed so he could rest.
It just reminded Kuroo that he was living the sedentary lifestyle recently. He needed to move a lot more in order to keep up with, say, Tsukishima’s active lifestyle as a professional athlete. Or, at least, he wouldn’t get tired easily or have body aches when he was just doing the simple task of carrying a person.
Kuroo raised his arms and stretched his whole body before unbuttoning the first three buttons of his red polo. Then, he removed Tsukishima’s shoes, socks,and vest.
While Kuroo removed his own other accessories, he was hit by a sudden fatigue. He immediately got his water bottle and took big gulps before letting out a big, heavy sigh.
WHAT. A. LONG. LONG. DAY.
He sat at the foot of the bed and stared at a sleeping Tsukishima, a hand on his chin. Then he sighed again. How the hell did it come to this? Kuroo glanced at the wall clock: three o’ clock in the morning.
Despite feeling the fatigue, with everything that happened earlier and his tipsiness gone, Kuroo’s mind was still very much awake. Since that was the case, he might as well make Tsukishima comfortable.
Kuroo opened Tsukishima’s backpack to bring out his white shirt, glasses, phone, and water jug. He went to the bathroom to wet a towel in warm water. Once in the bedroom, Kuroo sat down beside the younger man.
“Tsukki…” He whispered. “I’ll just change your shirt and freshen you up a bit so you can sleep comfortably, okay? Please don’t get mad at me later when you find out.”
Kuroo carefully lifted Tsukishima in a sitting position and removed his orange polo. He wiped the warm towel on his face, arms, and torso. Kuroo was doing his best to just look straight at Tsukishima’s closed eyes because there was no way in hell Kuroo would stare at his bare chest. After what seemed like Kuroo’s longest three minutes, Tsukishima was wearing a new shirt and lying on the bed.
As much as Kuroo was uncomfortable seeing Tsukishima sleep in his black slacks, again, there was no way in hell he would remove it without the younger man’s consent. Personal space was very important to Tsukishima and Kuroo respected that.
Changing his shirt was already too much for Kuroo. But the polo smelled of spilled alcohol and sweat, so he had to do it. He would just apologize, then accept Tsukishima’s anger.
Kuroo placed the thick blanket over Tsukishima, making sure he was fully covered. He suddenly remembered Yamaguchi’s reminder and placed two pillows under the blanket on either side of Tsukishima. Then, Kuroo placed his glasses, phone, and water jug on the bedside table in case he got thirsty when he woke up. Once Kuroo saw that Tsukishima was all good, he hurriedly entered the bathroom.
He needed a long, hot shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After his bath, Kuroo changed into his sleeping clothes before wrapping things up in the room. He went to the balcony door and closed the curtains. Then, he moved the couch beside the bed and sat on it.
Kuroo checked on Tsukishima. The younger man was facing Kuroo, arms embracing the pillow, a serene and peaceful look on his face. If Kuroo still wasn’t sure he loved Tsukishima, he was at that moment.
“Precious and delicate indeed.” Kuroo whispered as he stared at the beautiful person in front of him. “Whatever happens, good or bad, I will always love you, Tsukki…Kei…” And before he knew it, Kuroo leaned down and kissed Tsukishima lightly on the forehead. At this moment, he didn’t care anymore because Kuroo just wanted to convey his love for Tsukishima—even though the latter wouldn’t know.
Kuroo finally felt drowsy and prepped his pillow and blanket before lying down on the couch. He faced Tsukishima and smiled as he slowly drifted off to sleep.
“Good night, Tsukki.”
Chapter Text
Every single day, Tsukishima woke up to his phone alarm as part of his daily routine.
This time though, no alarm woke him. Instead, he just had the urge to slowly open his eyes. When he did, Tsukishima was greeted by a blurry beige ceiling. He rubbed his eyes before stretching his whole body. Upon turning to his side, he saw black curtains with a small light peeping through the cracks.
“Where am I?” He grumbled as he slowly sat up. The moment he did though, a major headache suddenly hit him. He groaned loudly before lying down again, covering his eyes with an arm. He tried to remember what happened last night, but it only fueled his headache.
Tsukishima decided to just lie down and close his eyes for a few minutes without thinking about anything. But still, he kept wondering what happened for him to be in this predicament. Although with the headache as a clue, Tsukishima guessed only one thing. He was having a major hangover.
Shit. Did I drink a lot at the after-party last night? What happened while I was drunk? And where am I? In my room? Who brought me here? How did I get here? Where’s Tadashi?
With all those questions looming, his headache became worse. He needed his hangover remedies before he could do anything else. Even as simple as thinking was causing him a migraine.
“Tadashi?”
No answer. Instead, he heard a kettle being turned on and tinkles of utensils and a cup. Tsukishima sighed. His best friend already knew what he needed so he just laid still. He wasn’t in the mood to talk or sit anyway, so he just waited.
“Tsukki, tea is ready. Sit up slowly so your headache won’t get worse.”
Tsukishima might be experiencing the worst hangover of his life. Despite that, he knew Tadashi’s voice even from afar. That wasn’t his best friend’s voice. Regardless, he removed the arm from his face and slowly sat up. He tried to find his glasses around the bed until someone handed them to him. Tsukishima quickly wore it and looked up to see not Tadashi---but a tall man with messy black hair in a red shirt and black sweatpants, holding a cup of tea.
“What…Kuroo?”
The older man smiled sheepishly. “Hi, Tsukki. Please don’t get mad. I will explain later.” He handed the cup. “But first, drink your green tea while it’s still hot. Yamaguchi told me to give it to you once you wake up as it helps in your hangover.”
Tsukishima wanted to ask questions or retort back. But suddenly seeing Kuroo in an unfamiliar room and experiencing a major headache and hangover was too much. Instead, he just nodded and took the cup. Smelling the aroma of the tea made him feel slightly better. Tsukishima took a sip. Ah yes. That helps.
At the corner of his eye, Kuroo sat on the couch beside the bed, just waiting. Tsukishima took his time drinking. At the same time, more questions bombarded his mind. Tsukishima knew he wouldn’t be at ease until he found out what happened.
“Kuroo, wh-what happened? Why am I here? Where’s Tadashi? Why are you here? How did I get here? How drunk was I? What---”
“Tsukki, slow down. I understand your confusion and your questions will be answered.” Kuroo said as he sat across Tsukishima on the bed. “Just relax for now.”
Tsukishima nodded as he finished his tea. He handed the cup to Kuroo, and then looked around the room. Yup, this is definitely not my room. His guess: it was Kuroo’s. How he got there, that was one of his questions for later.
As his eyes roamed at the bed, he noticed his clothes. Despite having a hangover, Tsukishima knew this was not his full attire last night. He remembered because he disliked that orange button-down. He glared at the older man in front of him. “Kuroo, why am I wearing a different shirt?”
Kuroo held out his hand in defense. “I’m sorry, please don’t be angry. Your shirt smelled of alcohol and sweat, I didn’t want you to sleep in it. I cleaned you up a bit as well. But that’s all I did.” He looked apologetic that it made Tsukishima’s irritation dissipate. “For what it’s worth, I didn’t remove your slacks. I respect your personal space and I value my life.”
“Respect my personal space? You changed my top without my permission.”
“I’m really sorry, Tsukki. Yamaguchi told me to make you comfortable when you sleep. I also didn’t want you to sleep in a smelly and wet shirt. And while cleaning you with a warm towel, I didn’t look. I promise.” Kuroo pleaded. “Please don’t kill me…”
Tsukishima sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. So Yamaguchi had something to do with his…predicament. And he even involved Kuroo.
“I’m not going to kill you, Kuroo. But…” Tsukishima frowned at the older man. “You do owe me an explanation…A LOT of it.”
“Yes, I know. And I will tell EVERYTHING.” Kuroo said. “But before that, do you want to eat first? I can order room service.”
“Eat? What time is it?”
“1 in the afternoon.”
“I-I’m not that hungry. Just then, on cue, Tsukishima’s stomach growled. Kuroo chuckled. “I don’t think your stomach agrees, Tsukki.” He handed him the menu. “You haven’t eaten since last night and you slept for more than 8 hours.”
“I…don’t want to eat much, I’ll just go for—“
“No strawberry shortcake…for now. Eat real food, Tsukki. You have a hangover and you are dehydrated. You need to recover those lost nutrients.” Kuroo said, waving a finger.
Tsukishima pouted as he read the menu. “I don’t need a lecture on food right now, Kuroo. You’re not my mom or Akiteru.” But he stared at the photos of meat and imagined what they taste like.
“No, I’m not. I’m one of your best friends who cares about your well-being and health.” Kuroo said as he took a paper and scribbled something. “At the moment, that hangover is not doing you any good. And that headache won’t disappear until you fill your stomach with proper food.”
Tsukishima raised an eyebrow. “Are you speaking from experience?”
Kuroo laughed. “On the hangover? You could say that.” He walked back to Tsukishima. “But on lecturing people with low appetite? You forget that Kenma is also my best friend. I always remind him to eat the right food all the time. Anyway, what are you getting?”
Tsukishima gave his order to Kuroo. When the older man went to the phone, he searched on what to do next. That was when he noticed there were two pillows on either side of him. Tsukishima frowned. He had the longtime habit of having two pillows on his sides when he slept. Only three people knew about it: his mother, Akiteru, and Tadashi. Ah, of course. Tadashi must’ve told Kuroo about it.
Tsukishima smiled though. He appreciated the effort that Kuroo did to make sure all of Yamaguchi’s reminders were done. As he removed the blanket off him, he saw that Kuroo was telling the truth: he still had his slacks on. Maybe I should’ve not gotten mad at him earlier. I’ll thank him later.
Right now though, as he felt the rough texture of his pants, there was a bit of ickiness in his body. Tsukishima wanted a shower. Eager to remove the drunkenness and sweaty feeling from his system, he swung his legs to the right and started standing up.
“Tsukki, wait!”
Just then, the hangover and headache hit Tsukishima hard. He staggered forward, unable to hold onto anything. Suddenly, a pair of arms caught him before he fell. Tsukishima looked up and saw Kuroo with a worried expression. They stared at each other for a few seconds before the older man spoke.
“Are you okay? Why did you suddenly stand up?”
“I want to take a shower.”
Kuroo sighed. “You should’ve told me first. Sit by the couch.”
“I’m fine, Kuroo. I can stand on my own.”
“I know, but don’t overexert yourself. Take it easy.” Kuroo gave him his water jug. “Hydrate yourself.”
“I’m not a kid, you know.” Tsukishima grumbled. But he sat on the couch and drank.
Kuroo rolled his eyes. “Yeah you’re not a kid. But you’re acting like one now. And you’re the one with a hangover and headache.” He shook his head. “Is this what Yamaguchi goes through every time you get drunk?”
Tsukishima glared at Kuroo. “Asshole.”
“Well, at least I’m an asshole who cares for you and l—“. Kuroo stopped and froze before speaking again. “You know what this is?” He approached the closet and took out a black backpack. “You’re hangry. So you really need to eat.”
Tsukishima kept silent as Kuroo handed him the backpack.
“All your clothes, skincare products, and other stuff are there. Yamaguchi packed them before I brought you here.” Kuroo said as he approached the telephone. “Take it easy on standing. Go clean up. I’ll call the front desk to order our food. Hopefully, by the time you finish, we can eat.” He picked up the phone. After a few seconds, he was speaking to someone already.
Tsukishima stared at Kuroo’s back for a minute before slowly standing up. At the corner of his eye, he could see Kuroo watching him. He took his backpack and went straight to the bathroom. He wouldn’t admit it but Kuroo was right: he was hangry. And feeling icky as well. Maybe he would feel better with the shower and, later, food.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Their lunch came a few minutes after Tsukihima got out of the bathroom. They ate at the balcony that had direct access to the beach via a small gate. The moment they started eating, Kuroo told Tsukishima everything---from the moment Yamaguchi called him in the after-party, all the way to how he ended up in the room.
Afterwards, Tsukishima was silent. He was clearly processing everything as he ate his meal. He was like that for a few minutes and the silence was deafening for Kuroo. Then, Tsukishima put down his utensils and frowned.
“Kuroo—“
“Tsukki—“
They spoke at the same time and stared at each other.
“Sorry Tsukki. You go first.”
Tsukishima shook his head. “No, Kuroo. I want to hear what you want to say. After telling me everything that happened last night and all I said, I’d like to know. You’ve been recounting the events yet you haven’t said anything ABOUT it.”
“What do you want me to say, Tsukki?”
Tsukishima let out an exasperated sigh. “Kuroo, despite me being drunk, you know there is something MORE to what I said. And you’re not going to say anything? You’ll just brush off everything that happened last night—starting from that dance?”
Despite almost confessing more than three years ago and even rehearsing what he wanted to say, Kuroo was left speechless. He had so many things that he wanted to say. How he had been in love with Tsukishima since high school. That he loved Tsukishima’s dedication in volleyball, school, museum work, and in everything that he does. How Kuroo was proud of what he had accomplished. That he loved spoiling him and taking care of him. How Tsukishima motivated Kuroo to be good at work. There was so much he wanted to say.
But at that moment, as Tsukishima demanded he say something, no words came out. It was like all he had rehearsed years ago disappeared. Kuroo froze, staring at a fuming Tsukishima. He stuttered as he tried to answer all of the younger man’s questions. But nothing really came out.
So Kuroo did the only thing that he thought would convey what he truly felt about everything and about Tsukishima. He hesitantly placed a hand on Tsukishima’s cheek, closed his eyes, and leaned in to kiss him on the lips.
It wasn’t sloppy, at least. But it was awkward because Kuroo was the only one kissing. Kuroo opened his eyes and leaned back, ending the kiss. Tsukishima was stunned at the unexpected action and stared at Kuroo.
Kuroo carefully looked at Tsukishima, studying his expression. Kuroo couldn’t read Tsukishima’s face and he somehow regretted kissing him. Then his expression changed to…sadness? Disappointment? Anger? Tsukishima chewed his bottom lip and frowned at Kuroo. Suddenly, tears started to form in the corner of Tsukishima’s eyes.
Kuroo panicked. “Tsukki, I-I’m so-sorry. I-I should not have—“
“Kuroo, you idiot! You stupid, stupid idiot!” Tsukishima cried as tears fell on his cheeks. “Wh-what took you so long?! I asked you to say something, why did you kiss me?! What the hell is that kiss?! Why are you so dense?! Why do you always assume?! Why, why—“
Kuroo immediately hugged Tsukishima, cradling him gently. “I’m sorry, Tsukki.” He rubbed soothing circles at his back. “Shhhhh, I’m here. We’ll talk when you’re okay.” He kissed the top of Tsukishima’s head. At this point, Kuroo didn’t care anymore if he should’ve done that. He just wanted Tsukishima to calm down, as he didn’t deserve to be too confused or emotional. So, Kuroo tried his best to make him feel a bit better.
But Tsukishima shook his head. “No, I’m fine. A lot of things are happening, I-I just don’t know how to process everything.” He sat up and looked at Kuroo with teary eyes.
“Kuroo?”
“Mmmm.”
“That kiss…was it real or did you do that just to shut me up?”
Kuroo gently cupped Tsukishima’s face with both hands. “Oh Tsukki, yes, it is real. It has always been real when it comes to you. Since…since high school.” Kuroo leaned closer, their faces only a few inches apart. “God…Tsukki, I love you. I have loved you since we were teenagers. I’m sorry I just said it now. But believe me when I say that I love you even more than when we were in high school. It has never wavered, never disappeared. I love you so, so much, Tsukki.”
Tsukishima’s eyes widened and he stiffened in place as he processed Kuroo’s words. He was overwhelmed by his own emotions and, eventually, his chaotic feelings for the other man. Thus, instead of answering Kuroo, Tsukishima leaned forward and kissed him on the lips. Kuroo was surprised at Tsukishima’s response at first. But when the younger man placed his arms around Kuroo’s neck that indicated he wanted something more, Kuroo kissed back vigorously. All thoughts of eating and talking flew out the window.
To his surprise, Tsukishima climbed on top of Kuroo’s lap and locked arms around the other man’s neck. Eventually, it became less of a simple kiss and more of passionate yearning for both of them.
Tsukishima parted his mouth and Kuroo took it as a sign to slide his tongue into his lips. Kuroo hummed when Tsukishima returned the kiss even more fervently, lowering his arms to hold Tsukishima’s waist tightly. Maybe it was the overwhelming emotions that they were both feeling or the pent up sexual energy that flowed out the moment they kissed. Whatever it was, both Kuroo and Tsukishima wouldn’t stop as they let out all they had bottled up into that passionate kiss.
When Kuroo heard Tsukishima moan, he knew it was over for him. He stood up and carried Tsukishima towards the bedroom. The blond gasped at the sudden movement. But he eventually locked his legs on Kuroo’s waist and continued kissing him fervently.
It took a few clumsy steps, but Kuroo herded Tsukishima to the bed and laid him there as they continued kissing. Without thinking any further, Kuroo slipped his hand underneath Tsukihima’s shirt and caressed the skin.
The younger man felt Kuroo’s lips trail down his neck and lick it, eliciting a moan from him. A voice told him they had to stop. But as Kuroo’s hand lingered on and he felt shivers run down his spine, Tsukishima knew stopping would be futile.
Both men were about to remove each other’s shirts when Kuroo’s phone started ringing.
As if broken from a spell, Kuroo and Tsukishima were startled and suddenly stopped what they were doing. They breathed heavily as they stared at each other with heavily-lidded eyes.
Eventually the call stopped and they started kissing again. But they had not lasted for two seconds when BOTH Tsukishima’s and Kuroo’s phones rang at the same time. They hesitantly stopped kissing and glanced at their respective phones.
“I…guess we…should…answer those…” Kuroo said, still panting.
“Y-yeah…”
They untangled themselves and got up. Both men went to answer their phones, going far away from each other. It was their best friends calling, asking if they were both awake and okay.
Kuroo and Tsukishima talked for a few minutes on the phone before they eventually hung up. When they faced each other, Kuroo was smiling sheepishly and rubbing his neck, while Tsukiahima blushed.
“Sawamura and Sugawara are inviting us to dinner tonight since there was no lunch earlier due to everyone still being asleep. We don’t have to hurry though as the dinner won’t start for four hours.”
“Yeah, I told Tadashi that I’m going. You?”
“I told Kenma I’m going as well.”
They knew that continuing what they started a few minutes ago wasn’t happening…for now. As they stood opposite each other, they understood that it was for the best. If it hadn’t been for the calls, Kuroo and Tsukishima would’ve done something that they would regret in the future. It wasn’t the right thing to do in their current situation.
And after all that, they knew they really needed to talk. It was long overdue.
Without saying anything else about what happened earlier, Kuroo held out his hand to Tsukishima. “Tsukki, we still have time before dinner. Let’s go outside and walk?”
At first, Tsukki hesitated. But he eventually smiled and walked towards Kuroo to take his hand.
“Yeah, that would be nice.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At first, they walked silently along the beach. Kuroo clasped Tsukishima’s hand and never let it go since they left the room. The younger man didn’t let go of Kuroo’s hand either. Tsukishima even closed the distance between them by walking closer to Kuroo.
It wasn’t an awkward silence though. In fact, both men felt they needed it after the chaotic things that happened from last night at the wedding to their sudden make out session earlier. It was only when they were a few feet away from the resort did Tsukishima speak up.
“So…you’ve been in love with me since high school, huh?”
“Uhm…yeah…” Kuroo said shyly.
Tsukishima shook his head. “I know I have been calling you this many times, but…stupid idiot, Kuroo.”
“I know, I know. I deserve to be called that.”
Tsukishima sighed. “Why did you tell me just now? Why wait for so long?” There was a hint of disappointment in his voice that made Kuroo flinch. “All this time…all these years, you’ve had feelings for me and never told me. Why? I don’t see any reasons for not confessing when I was always with you. We talked, texted, went out together, went out with friends, and even shared a lot of stories.”
“I—I—” Kuroo stuttered as he tried to form the words in his mouth. He couldn’t escape this. It was time to tell Tsukishima what he should’ve told him many years ago.
“You might not see any reasons why I didn’t confess. But I have. Lots of them.” Kuroo closed his eyes and breathed. “To tell you the truth, I was about to confess to you years ago---in your graduation party. But then, I heard that you start your museum work soon. And of course I knew about you becoming part of the Sendai Frogs. When I saw you being happy about your career starting to flourish and being with your friends and family, I backed out in confessing. You were so happy and I didn’t want to ruin that. You didn’t need a love life or someone like me to…complicate your life because everything is there according to how you want it. I was sure then that you had everything planned out, knowing you hehe. I didn’t want to be a hurdle or hindrance in your career or personal life.”
“Wait, is this the reason why you disappeared for months? Is this why you stopped texting or calling me even though I reached out to you?” Tsukishima said in a quivering voice. “Is this even the reason why you left my graduation party without so much as a goodbye and then never communicated with me again?”
Kuroo nodded, turning to face the beach in shame. “I did try many times to summon the courage to reach out to you. But I was really scared that you would reject me. Then the wedding came and here we are. But Tsukki, I am not proud of what I did.”
“Why…why are you like that, Kuroo? Why are you always assuming…” Tsukishima sniffed. Kuroo’s eyes widened as he heard Tsukishima’s words. “Why are you always assuming that I don’t need or want you? Assuming that you’d ruin the fun for me? Assuming that I don’t like you around? Assuming that you’re a burden to me?” Tsukishima’s voice quivered, with a hint of a cold, sad, and annoyed tone. “Did you even bother to ask what I think? What do I feel? What I wanted to say? We’ve known each other for years, yet you never even asked me what I feel about…” He trailed off as Kuroo stayed silent.
Then suddenly, he cried out. “You never even asked me what I feel about YOU! You assumed that you were a hindrance to me, but YOU NEVER BOTHERED TO ASK IF I WANTED YOU THERE OR NOT! For someone who is so confident, YOU ARE SUCH A FUCKING COWARD!”
At that moment, they had stopped walking. It was a good thing they were in a secluded part of the beach area, away from the resort, because Tsukishima’s angry voice echoed throughout the area.
“Then you had the audacity to disappear for months with no contact whatsoever?!” Tsukishima continued. “I had to ask Bokuto, Akaashi, Kenma, and even Yaku what happened to you. They said they would tell you I was looking for you, but you never got back to me. I was so damn worried because I really felt I did something wrong. I still tried to contact you but eventually gave up. Yet, it left me wondering why…why did you just leave like that?!”
“Tsukki…” Kuroo held out his hand to try comforting Tsukishima, but the latter swapped it away.
“Then this wedding came and suddenly we were communicating again just like before---like nothing happened.” Tsukishima said angrily. “I waited for you to say something, anything. But nothing. Then that dance happened and I still thought you would say something, just anything---so we could have a proper conversation. But still nothing. Do you know why I drank A LOT last night?”
Kuroo shook his head.
“It was because of YOU! I was waiting for you after the reception, but you never came! I thought it was a good opportunity for us to talk things through. But no, you bailed out, left me hanging. So I decided to drink because who the hell does that? Oh yeah, only a coward like you would!”
Kuroo was hesitant to hold Tsukishima at first. But then, the younger man leaned in and cried on his shoulder. So Kuroo hugged him and soothingly rubbed Tsukishima’s back, allowing him to just cry his heart out. Seeing Tsukishima cry because of him made Kuroo wanting to kick himself for being stupid. As Kuroo kissed the top of his blond head, he thought to himself: after this, after they have sorted out things, he would never, ever let go of Tsukishima again.
Tsukishima’s sobs subsided after a few minutes, but he was still sniffing.
“Tsukki, I understand why you’re so angry at me. As I said earlier, I am not proud of what I did. You have every right to hate me.” Kuroo said before sighing. “This is way long overdue. Let’s talk right here.” Tsukishima nodded as they sat down by the sand with the sound of the beach surrounding them. They faced each other and Kuroo saw the younger man still sobbing, eyes bloodshot with tears.
“I’m so sorry, Tsukki for…everything. I know a few sorrys won’t make up for the hurt, sadness, and the roller coaster of emotions I have caused you. But I just want to let you know I regret everything that I have done to you the past years. In the past months that we spent time together, I couldn’t count the times that I wanted to confess my love for you.”
Kuroo continued. “But whenever I have the courage to do it, I see the happiness in your eyes caused not by me, but by something else---your museum work, your volleyball career, being with your friends, and being with your family. I don’t blame them---I would never. But I just felt that there is no place for a Kuroo Tetsuro in your life. I didn’t want to complicate things when everything was according to how you wanted. ” Kuroo wiped the tears from Tsukishima’s cheek with his thumb.
“I look confident outside. But when it comes to you, all of that disappears. I become a fool when it comes to my love for you, which ends up me doing stupid things---like what I did.” Kuroo tucked a blond hair behind Tsukishima’s ear. “But know this: I would spend a lifetime making it up to you in any way I can and saying sorry. I love you so much, Tsukki. So much so that it overwhelms me. I have loved you since high school, I love you now, and I will always love you for the rest of my life.”
Tsukishima stared at Kuroo. “Those are bold words to say, Kuroo. Do not make promises you can’t keep.”
“But I don’t plan on breaking that promise, Tsukki.” Kuroo held both of Tsukishima’s hands, kissing them gently. “I vow to never hurt you again. I vow to give you the love that you truly deserve. And with that, I won’t assume anymore. I want to ask you: what do you feel now, Tsukki? What do you want to say? Please tell me everything, I’ll listen.”
“I---” Tsukishima stuttered as Kuroo’s question caught him off guard. Then he scowled. “You have the nerve to tell that to me. Don’t turn things around, Kuroo.”
“No, no, I’m not. It’s just…you’re right.” Kuroo looked at Tsukishima’s golden eyes tenderly. “I’m a coward. I was---am scared that if I confessed to you and you didn’t like me the same way, I would lose you forever. So I just assumed that you didn’t like me because you were happy with what you have. I didn’t confess, and then just left. I never thought of your feelings or didn’t even talk to you.”
“Kuroo…sometimes you can be so dense that it’s frustrating.” Tsukishima said as he sighed. “If it’s still not obvious now, let me tell you. I don’t want to beat around the bush anymore. I love you, Kuroo Tetsuro. I liked you in high school, maybe after the Tokyo Training Camp. But I started loving you in college when we spent more time texting, calling, and hanging out with each other.”
Kuroo gasped, tears forming at the corner of his eyes. “Oh, Tsukki…”
“I have never said this to you. But whenever I’m overwhelmed with emotions and there is alcohol around, I drink…A LOT. Thus, the events last night. After that dance we had, I was confused and overwhelmed with what I felt about you because a part of me moved on from your disappearance. Despite being drunk, everything that I said last night was true and I truly felt that way.”
Kuroo sniffed as he held Tsukishima’s hand to his lips. “Oh god Tsukki, I-I didn’t know, I-wh-all this time, you had feelings for me too…god I feel so stupid for not confessing, for leaving you in the dark, for not acknowledging what…we had last night, for everything. God, I’m so sorry Tsukki...” He leaned down and placed his forehead on Tsukishima’s shoulder as he cried. “I don’t know if you will ever forgive. I’ve ruined everything that we had and because of my stupidity, because I was afraid. If only I was so much more confident when it came to love, I would’ve had---”
“Kuroo, stop. I did hate you earlier for everything. But it doesn’t mean I won’t forgive you. If anything, as we talk now, I realized that we are both at fault and stupid.” Tsukishima hugged Kuroo. “And besides, being scared is part of it. I guess…you could say, I was afraid of letting you know my feelings too. I was scared to get rejected by my senpai. So I kept my feelings to myself. And look where that led us.”
Kuroo sighed as he sat up from his position, eyes red from crying. This surprised Tsukishima as he had never seen Kuroo cry over anything else aside from volleyball (like in the Dumpster Battle). He looked so vulnerable and weak. A total opposite to the provocation expert that was so confident and charming, able to convince people on anything with just a few words. In a way, it flattered Tsukishima because he knew that Kuroo was like this because of him. It made his heart flutter.
“Tsukki, you know, this made me realize that I was too focused on getting rejected by you, that I never even tried to take one step further. Even though it was right in front of me…how much you wanted to spend time with me, our communication…even that dance.”
Tsukishima suddenly scowled. “That dance, yes I wanted to bring that up. One of the reasons why I drank was because I became frustrated by that.” He scrunched up his face. “Have you ever thought that if another man caught the garter, I would be as touchy-feeling or closer to them than I was with you at the dance?”
“Hmmmm…I don’t know.” Kuroo said as he recalled his fellow garter contestants. “I mean Ushijima, Kageyama, and Bokuto were there. I also know that Ushijima likes you…”
Tsukishima rolled his eyes as he slapped Kuroo’s shoulder. “Kuroo, I am being serious here. It’s a serious question. Please answer it.”
“I---to be honest, no. I was actually waiting for you to push me away or stop the dance a few minutes in. But you didn’t…”
“Exactly. Have you seen me so vulnerable with anyone else, Kuroo?! Do you think I would allow just anyone to touch me or be intimate with me like that?!”
Kuroo sat stunned in silence. “Oh. OH.” Then he shook his head. “Ah, I’m an idiot…again.”
Tsukishima scoffed. “At this point, I believe we are both idiots.”
“Idiots…in love?”
“Mmmm, that sounds about right.”
They stayed in silence for a while, holding each other’s hands, staring at the calm beach waves. Eventually, Tsukishima moved closer to Kuroo and leaned his head on his shoulder.
“Kuroo?”
“Mmmm?”
“I know we talked and all, but…” Tsukishima hesitated. “If it’s okay with you, let’s sit down and talk about everything after the wedding event. No distractions, no other people, without this wedding…thing. Just us.”
“Agree.” Even though they confessed to each other, they had to clear some things up---especially when it came to his disappearance on Tsukishima. He hurt him so much that he had a lot of explaining to do. They both knew that they wouldn’t be able to move further if they didn’t address some of their issues---and maybe that make out session that happened out of nowhere. “After this event, before we go back to our own hometowns, do you want to go somewhere?”
Tsukishima nodded. “Yes, I’d like that.”
Both men watched the sun set in front of them. They didn’t want to leave as they wanted to savor their alone time together. But they had to prepare for the dinner gathering tonight with their fellow high school alumni.
“Tsukki?”
“Mmmm.”
“Can---can I kiss you? Properly this time?”
Instead of answering, Tsukishima lifted his head and faced Kuroo with tender eyes, a small smile on his lips. Kuroo took that as a yes. He leaned forward to give his moonshine a sweet, loving kiss that he deserved.
Chapter Text
It turned out that everything was in Kuroo’s and Tsukishima’s favor—at the very least. All thanks to their friends.
Kuroo and Tsukishima arrived at the dinner separately, as they didn’t want to raise suspicion and steal the spotlight from the newlyweds. Despite that, they were seated beside each other. Still, Kuroo and Tsukishima did their best to act normal. However, as the night progressed, they found out that the plans had changed. The wedding celebration was supposed to last for a week. But Sawamura and Sugawara announced that they would be leaving the next day.
Kuroo and Tsukishima frowned and counted the days. As the newlyweds mentioned MONTHS ago, the wedding itself and the celebrations would last a week. If their calculations were right, they still had four days.
But then everyone revealed that it wasn’t just Sawamura and Sugawara who were leaving the next day—-except for Kuroo and Tsukishima, everyone else was leaving, too. They would be staying in the resort for four more days, with their ROOM fully paid and non-refundable, just the two of them.
It turned out that their friends got frustrated with Kuroo and Tsukishima pining and dancing around at each other, yet nothing was happening. They thought that the garter and bouquet toss and the dance would help. But then when they arrived at the dinner, there was no indication that anything progressed.
“Yes, we did say that our stay here is one week. Because half of that is our wedding and half of that is for both of you to come to your senses and admit your feelings to each other. No matter the outcome, you will both stay here in the resort for four days and resolve…whatever this is.” Sawamura gestured to both men.
“We don't know how you two plan to spend the whole four days.” This time it was Yamaguchi’s turn to speak. “But please, for the love of God—“
“—And for the sake of our sanity—” Kenma interjected.
“That too…” Yamaguchi said. “Stop this pining and talk about it.”
Of course, Tsukishima didn’t take it well. He was definitely pissed and Kuroo had to calm him down by gently caressing Tsukishima’s balled fists under the table.
And Kuroo couldn’t blame him. After all, the plan had some of the things that Tsukishima didn’t like: spontaneity, meddling, and keeping big things such as this a secret. This was why Tsukishima didn’t like surprises.
Eventually, after they glanced at each other and nodded, Kuroo and Tsukishima had a mutual understanding on what to do. Finally, in front of their friends, they held up their intertwined hands. It took a few seconds for everyone to register what they were seeing. But when they did, most of them cried out in joy, with Bokuto and Yamaguchi embracing both Kuroo and Tsukishima.
As per the words of Sawamura and Sugawara, “It’s about damn time”.
Kuroo knew that Tsukishima wasn’t used to the attention that he was getting. But he could see the small smile on his lips as his happy friends gathered around to congratulate him. Kuroo, on the other hand, was getting a lot of teasing from Bokuto and Akaashi, as well as from his Nekoma teammates. He would definitely never hear the end of it.
When the chaos died down, Kuroo and Tsukishima smiled at each other, relief on their faces. In a way, they were happy to finally tell their friends about their relationship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Tsukki…this is not a room! This is a house!”
Tsukishima chuckled, thinking that Kuroo was just overreacting. When he got inside and looked around, Kuroo wasn’t exaggerating. The room that their friends got them was HUGE.
“I thought we were just getting a regular room just like the ones we had at the wedding. What is this?” Tsukishima asked.
Kuroo didn’t respond as he had already disappeared into the other room. Tsukishima rolled his eyes but smiled at his boyfriend's enthusiasm (he still wasn’t used to calling Kuroo that). He messaged Yamaguchi about the room and found out that they booked the deluxe suite, which had a living room, a bedroom, and private balcony that had direct beach access via a small gate. It was too much for Tsukishima since it was only the two of them for four days. But nevertheless, he was thankful for it.
“Kuroo?”
“Inside the bedroom. Tsukki, you should see this!”
Tsukishima left his luggage in the living room together with Kuroo’s and walked towards the bedroom.
And again Kuroo wasn’t exaggerating.
The room had an L-shaped couch on one side and a large wall-mounted TV on another. When he looked to his right, he saw the big private balcony that not only had a small gate, but a mini pool in it. He could already see a hint of the beach a few feet away.
Then, in the middle of the room was a king-sized bed that, in Tsukishima’s opinion, was too big just for the two of them. Kuroo was sprawled on it, savoring the softness and space it provided.
“Wow, so you weren’t exaggerating. Apparently, they booked us the deluxe suite. Ah, this is too much for me. Waste of space I think, for just us staying here.”
Kuroo chuckled. Ever since they revealed their relationship with their friends yesterday, Tsukishima became less tense---especially with Kuroo. But that also meant he was back to his usual salty, sharp-tongued self. This was good for Kuroo because Tsukishima was back to normal. To be honest, he missed that. He wasn’t used to the angsty and teary Tsukishima that he saw for the last 48 hours.
“Awwww, I get it. This is a huge place even for my standards. But…” Kuroo sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to his boyfriend (also still not used to calling him that). Tsukishima indulged by standing in front of him and Kuroo hugged his waist. “I don’t mind as long as I’m spending it here with you in the next four days.” He kissed Tsukishima’s hand before Kuroo leaned his head on his boyfriend’s waist. “God, I’ve longed for this, Tsukki. If you only knew.”
Tsukishima scoffed. “Oh I know.” But he smiled as he hugged Kuroo. “I…I don’t mind as well, of course. However, this was too spontaneous and we need to plan out what to do in the next four days. I was thinking we could---”
The younger man squealed as Kuroo carried him. The next thing Tsukishima knew, he was lying on the bed and Kuroo was on top of him, a smirk on his lips but a tender look on his hazel, cat-like eyes. Tsukishima blushed as he stared at Kuroo intently.
“How about we don’t plan anything at all? Let’s just relax and go with the flow.” Kuroo gently kissed Tsukishima on the lips. “I know you’re not used to that. But we have been experiencing many changes the past few days, Tsukki. Heck, even the past months. So I think NOT planning this four-day vacation won’t hurt?” He tucked a stray of blond hair behind his boyfriend’s ear.
Tsukishima pouted, but he knew Kuroo had a point. He was not at work nor was he in a Sendai Frogs match. Other than the both of them having plans to talk, there was no need to do thorough planning at the moment. He was not used to it. But he also realized with them being a couple, there would probably be more spontaneity in the future. Tsukishima sighed.
“Fine, you’re right.”
“Of course I am.” Kuroo laughed, as he lay on Tsukishima’s side. “Although right now, I just want us to stay here in this big bed and cuddle with you.” He hugged Tsukishima tightly.
“Mmmm, alright.” The younger man smiled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just like what Kuroo said, they both just went with the flow during their vacation. However, they made sure that they tried out almost all of the amenities the resort had to offer---as per Sugawara’s advice. They also walked by the beach, swam in the balcony mini pool, watched movies, and did other bonding activities.
But when nighttime came, when they were sitting by the balcony couch with just the two of them under the starry night, Kuroo and Tsukishima talked until either one of them got sleepy. It was not planned. It just came on their first night as they cuddled with each other.
They talked about their feelings, confessions, struggles, issues, Kuroo’s disappearance, Tsukishima’s feelings on his disappearance, work, personal, relationship, and, surprisingly, even their future. It was like all those years of pining and yearning culminated in the four days that they were alone together. Kuroo and Tsukishima were finally able to address everything about themselves. It was something they needed before they could start building the new chapter of their lives and their relationship.
On their last night, as Tsukishima laid his head on Kuroo’s lap, no words were exchanged. Instead, they savored the silence under the full moon surrounded by stars, Kuroo caressing Tsukishima’s blond hair as the latter closed his eyes.
Suddenly, Tsukishima spoke up.
“Kuroo…”
“Mmmm, yes Tsukki?”
“There’s been something bugging in my mind. I was hesitant to ask about it, but I didn’t want this vacation to end without me asking it.”
Kuroo looked down at his boyfriend, his face scrunched up. “What is it? We’ve been talking the past few days. You know it’s okay to speak up what’s on your mind.”
“I know.” Tsukishima fumbled with his fingers nervously. Kuroo placed a hand and caressed them to soothe him. “Anyway, I wondered. If this wedding didn’t happen, would you still reach out to me even after you disappeared? And would you still love me?”
Tears formed in the corner of Kuroo’s eyes. Even though they talked about it, he knew that Tsukishima was still hurt from his disappearance. He had promised him that he would make up for it even if it took a lifetime and Tsukishima believed Kuroo wouldn’t break that promise. But Kuroo also knew his boyfriend was still recovering from the hurt.
“Oh Tsukki, baby, my moonshine...” It was the first time that Kuroo gave Tsukishima a word of endearment and it felt so natural that he repeated it again. “Moonshine, I would also regret losing you. I would kick myself for a lifetime if I didn’t reach out and tell you my love for you. I’d like to ask though: would you have waited for me?”
Tsukishima nodded. “Yes. A thousand times yes.”
Kuroo and Tsukishima smiled through their tears. Their foreheads met, bridging the gap between their souls. A silent conversation unfolded, a language beyond words. For the first time since they got together, in their intimate space, the world faded away. At that moment, they whispered their love through gentle touches, the rhythm of their hearts, and sweet kisses.
Eventually, the kisses turned passionate as Tsukishima immediately climbed on Kuroo’s lap. Burying his hands on the messy black hair, Tsukishima parted his lips for Kuroo. The older man slid his tongue inside and explored every crevice of his mouth.
The last time they made out, they were overwhelmed with emotions and in a hurry. Now though, as Kuroo and Tsukishima melted into their passionate kiss, the uncertainties were gone and there was no need to rush their intimate moment.
As Kuroo deepened his kiss, he knew his love for Tsukishima grew stronger. He would give him the love that he deserved and spoil him in any way he wanted. As Kuroo lowered his lips on Tsukishima’s neck and bit on the skin, he wanted to take things slow and make the most out of tonight.
Tsukishima let out a moan as Kuroo bit his skin. He had never let his walls down like this with anyone. But with Kuroo, he was vulnerable---to his words, his gentle touches, and at that moment, his passionate and loving kisses. Even though it took him years to confess his feelings, there was no rush. Tonight all the walls were down. Tsukishima wanted nothing more than to spend the night in Kuroo’s arms and make love to him.
Kuroo filled Tsukishima’s neck with more bites as his hand slipped underneath his top to caress an already hardened bud. The older man rolled it between his fingers and Tsukishima let out a small moan.
“K-Kuroo…” Tsukishima whispered into Kuroo’s lips.
Kuroo panted heavily. “Tsukki…”
The younger man shivered at the name, and then shook his head. His walls were completely down and he wanted to show that to Kuroo. “No, not Tsukki…don’t call me that…”
Kuroo stopped what he was doing and faced Tsukishima with wide eyes. “D-Do you mean…”
Tsukihima nodded as he smiled at Kuroo with loving eyes.
“Oh…moonshine…my Kei…” With that, Kuroo gave the most passionate kiss that his boyfriend deserved. He stood up and carried Kei towards the bedroom. Kei locked his legs around Kuroo’s waist and returned the kiss with much vigor.
As soon as Kuroo slowly laid Kei on the bed, they both removed each other’s shirts. Kuroo’s hazel-eyes lingered at Kei’s naked torso, glowing under the moonlight from outside.
“You’re so beautiful, Kei. God, I love you so much.”
Kei’s golden eyes stared at Kuroo’s chest before landing on his hazel eyes. The younger man pulled his boyfriend towards him.
“Don’t hold back, because I won’t either.” Kei whispered in his ear. “Take me, I’m yours, Tetsuro.”
Something snapped inside Tetsuro upon hearing his first name. He growled as he pushed Kei even deeper into the mattress.
“You better be careful with what you wish for, Kei.” Tetsuro said as he kissed Kei’s neck. “I’m going to fuck you senseless all night until you can’t stand anymore.”
Kei smirked as his golden orbs gleamed with pleasure and lust.
“I look forward to that, Tetsuro…”
