Chapter Text
Iwaizumi couldn't take it anymore.
When Iwaizumi decided to be roommates with Mattsun in University he thought they would have fun, relax in their own little space, and mostly watch volleyball on TV. A well-needed change of pace from living with the parents. They were adults now and for the first two years life had been exactly like that. Matsukawa had had girlfriends before and they had been fine, coming by sometimes. Iwaizumi didn’t really care. So, three months ago when Mattsun had told him he had met someone new he was not expecting this. Ever since Matsukawa started dating this girl, all you could hear blasting through the speakers in their little apartment were Oikawa Tooru's songs.
Which brought him to now. After a long day of classes, he just wanted to relax a bit but apparently there was a concert going on in his house. He could hear the sound of Oikawa’s latest song bursting through the speakers of their living room TV as soon as he stepped foot into the apartment. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and shut the door with a little more force than necessary.
“Oh, hi Iwaizumi-san!” Kaori said lowering the volume, even if only slightly.
She was a very sweet girl, all smiles and soft voice. Iwaizumi liked her, and she made Matsukawa happy, the only thing that really bothered him is that she was absolutely obsessed with the superstar. Which would be fine, Oikawa Tooru was a very talented individual, and he was also very nice to the eye. Contrary to popular belief Iwaizumi kept up with the trends and had even heard some of his songs before his house had become a part-time shrine to the star. And that was the problem, just the incessant flow of Oikawa trivia he's been subjected to for the last three months. He could not stand it anymore.
Iwaizumi gave her a curt nod, making his way to his room. He was being rude, but give him a break, he just had a long day of brain breaking classes and had not been really looking forward to hearing the pop star as soon as he got home. Dropping his bag on the floor he slammed into the bed face first, a deep sigh leaving him.
This was all Matsukawa's fault, at first it had been cute seeing him all bubbly with someone new, he had commented with Iwaizumi how this girl liked this one artist and wanted him to give him a chance.
“Yeah, I don't know if I like him too much, his songs are mainly pop.” Matsukawa had told Iwaizumi very early on.
“You should give him a chance though. If he's her favorite artist and you actually really like her, make the effort. His songs are not too bad.”
“Oh, so you're a fan” Matsukawa wiggled his eyebrows at Iwaizumi.
“I didn't say that.”
“Look at you, Iwaizumi Hajime, an Oikawa Tooru fan. I didn't know you were on par with what’s popular.”
Iwaizumi just gave him the deadliest stare he could and said “I’m just saying he is not too bad, even if a little overrated, and if you want to keep your girlfriend you should take a liking in her interests. But whatever.”
“I know” Matsukawa said understandingly "I'll give him another listen, I guess.”
Iwaizumi had never regretted a conversation as much as that one.
Matsukawa had not only given him another listen, but he had given him a thousand other listens. He had become a fan, add to that his “Random Oikawa facts Queen” girlfriend (self-titled) and fast forward three months and you get the situation he was in right now.
If by some reason he gets kidnapped and the only way to get out is get every question right in an extensive test on Oikawa Tooru’s likes and dislikes he’d walk free. Knowing that made him shiver.
“What did I do to deserve this?” he muttered to himself, gathering the courage to get up from his bed and making his way back to the living room now that the music had finally stopped.
He sat on the couch next to Matsukawa who was now watching a show he didn't recall having seen before.
“Has Kaori left already?”
“Yeah, just now.”
“Didn’t stay for dinner today?”
She had been staying late recently; they had been dating for three months now so it’s only normal it was getting more serious.
“No, said she had to study more for some test next week.”
That Iwaizumi understood, he also had so much to study but had recently taken to the library for a bit of peace and quiet, spending a bit less time at the apartment. He didn't like to think that it was because of Kaori, she really was the sweetest, she even made more food when making dinner for her and Matsukawa to give to Iwaizumi, and she was a really good cook, but if he heard one more fact about Oikawa's haircare routine he was going to have a mental breakdown.
“Iwaizumi” Matsukawa's voice took him out of the mental spiral he was about to go into “are you still okay with Kaori spending so much time here?”
“What? Of course, why'd you ask?”
“Just wanted to make sure, I know you're a bit sick of hearing about Oi-”
“Yes Mattsun,” Iwaizumi interrupted. “You know I like Kaori, and I like seeing you so happy, but the constant ‘Oikawa this Oikawa that’ is a bit much for me.”
“I understand, even though I think it's getting a bit over the top recently, but I still enjoy his songs. Call it a love spell.”
“That’s the only way I could listen to one of his songs willingly now.” Iwaizumi laughed.
“You never know, maybe the love of your life will be someone that loves him as much as Kaori does.”
“I don't know if she would take this as an insult or a compliment, but I think only Oikawa can love himself as much as kaori does.”
“Definitely a compliment.” Matsukawa laughed "I've bought her tickets to his show here in Tokyo, as a surprise, she’s been going on about not being able to get them for so long."
“Did you sell a kidney to get them?” Iwaizumi asked, concerned. Tickets to Oikawa’s concert were already expensive and had been sold out for months, he couldn't imagine how much they would be resold for now.
Matsukawa gave a little laugh, “Don’t worry, I called in a favor.”
“To whom?”
“That is not something for you to worry about,” he said thoughtfully.
Iwaizumi had been friends with Matsukawa since middle school. He knew he got his way with things but sometimes the way he would be mysterious about it scared him a bit to be honest.
“Just give me a heads up before you tell her so I can be within a safe distance of the house and prevent hearing damage from the way she's going to scream.” Iwaizumi said with the straightest face he could manage.
“You got it. I've bought earplugs.” Matsukawa said, taking actual earplugs from his pocket.
That broke Iwaizumi, making him cackle. Mattsun was a good friend, and if he had to deal with a bit of crazy fanatics to see him happy then he was okay with it. But he was thankful for the heads up.
That was, until two weeks later, when Iwaizumi was jolted awake by the front door slamming so hard he swore the apartment shook. Okay, maybe he was exaggerating, but he had just woken up, and everything was worse when someone was banging doors at, he looked at his phone, 7 in the morning!
He was going to kill Matsukawa.
A scream ripped through the apartment “Iwaizumi!”.
Maybe he was the one that was going to get killed.
His brain tried to sort through all the things he'd done in the past week that would call for a reaction like this from his roommate. Sure, he didn't take out the trash like he said he would yesterday, and he might have eaten the last of Mattsun's instant ramen. But those are all things way below this level of annoyance.
“Iwaizumi Hajime.” Mattsun opened Iwaizumi’s door in a woosh.
“Matsukawa Issei.”
“Kaori just broke up with me,” Matsukawa let out, “and now I need your help.”
What?
“What?”
Iwaizumi needed a moment, but Mattsun was already talking again. He didn't really absorb half the information being thrown at him, he was way too tired.Yesterday he had stayed up studying until 3 in the morning for a test he was really scar-
“...and she said she couldn't have a boyfriend in case Oikawa wanted to give her a chance which-”
“Wait, what? Can you repeat from the start I don't know if I heard right.” He definitely couldn’t have heard right. Right?
“When I was telling her I got her the tickets to the concert she said she already had one through a friend, and that she can't have a boyfriend in case she meets him, and he somehow wants to date her on the spot. Can you believe this?”
Actually, Iwaizumi could believe this. He recalled she once said she would leave everything behind for a chance to lick Oikawa’s abs. So, it was not an empty claim it seemed.
“No, of course not, that's nonsense” Iwaizumi chose to say instead. There was no need to rub salt on the wound.
“Right?” Mattsun said with his head down.
The anger from not long ago must have subsided, leaving enough space for the realization that his girlfriend broke up with him for an idol to set in.
Harsh.
Still, where did Iwaizumi fit in with all this?
“And you need my help to cheer you up? We can get hammered. I'll buy you drinks so you can drown your sorrows.”
“I’ll take you up on that offer, but that wasn't it actually.” Mattsun said sheepishly.
Oh, that’s not good.
“What then?”
“Cometotheconcertwithme.” Matsukawa rushed out.
“I don't think I want to understand what you just said.”
“Come on Hajime, come with me. I just got dumped by my date.” Matsukawa flinched.
Harsh indeed.
“I’m not going to a concert of his. Sell the tickets or whatever you can make a small fortune. I bet it’ll make you feel better.” Iwaizumi turns away in his bed and throws the sheets back up to his shoulders.
“I actually was really excited to go to his concert. You know I like his songs, and I don’t want to be there all alone with a broken heart, Hajime.”
It really was a sad picture to imagine, and Iwaizumi was a good friend. He was going to regret what he was about to say for sure, but his friend had just gotten dumped.
“I’ll go.” he grumbled, still covered, avoiding eye contact.
“Really!? Thanks Iwaizumi, I will buy you ramen for a year.”
“Don’t make promises you can't keep Matsukawa.”
“A week then!” Matsukawa gave Iwaizumi a hug that he tried to shake off. “Thank you, seriously. It will be fun, you'll see!” he yelled, making his way out of Iwaizumi’s room.
“I doubt it.” he murmured to himself trying to get back to sleep.
How do I always end up in these situations?
The things he did for his friends.
