Chapter Text

Red had asked Chloe to go on an adventure with her. She was always into taking risks and doing things that Chloe wouldn’t exactly categorize as safe, but because she absolutely adored her redhead, the princess reluctantly agreed. She did trust her girlfriend and knew she would never let anything bad happen to her so she put on some jeans and a blue t-shirt and waited for Red to be ready.

The Wonderland heir made her way out of the bathroom in black shorts and a red top and approached her princess, taking her hands. “You ready to have some fun tonight?” she asked, her brown eyes sparkling with excitement. Chloe smiled anxiously, squeezing her girlfriend’s hands tight. “Yeah, let’s go!” Red smiled and dragged her girlfriend up and out the door.

They had made it to the location, and what stood in front of Chloe had her jaw on the ground. A massive towering mansion, its windows dark, with vines crawling up the cracked stone walls, and jagged bricks making up the walls. Around the house were trees, their branches looking eerily like fingers, with barely any light in the area.

Chloe hesitated, a look of worry on her face, as Red started walking towards the door. Knowing her girlfriend wasn’t the biggest fan of her adventures, she turned to her and sweetly said,“Chlo, we don’t have to do this if you don’t feel comfortable with it.” Chloe nervously laughed Red’s comment off, grabbed her arm, and said “Don’t worry, my love, I’m alright!”

Red smiled, kissing the blue-haired girl’s hand. “You’ll see, Bluey, it’s going to be incredible,” she said, a mesmerized look in her eyes. She tugged at Chloe’s hands gently and pulled her toward the mansion’s front steps, ignoring the creaking of the old floorboards underneath their feet, as they made their way inside.

The mansion’s interior was barely lit, extremely dusty, and there was glass littered all over the floor. Chloe’s eyes looked around nervously as she made herself aware of all that could go wrong while in here, but she quickly pushed the thoughts aside, feeling her girlfriend’s comforting squeeze to her hand. “Red… it’s… beautiful,” she whispered, her voice filled with awe.

Red’s smile spread to her eyes as she hopped over some of the shards on the ground. “I told you it’d be worth it, princess!” she said, her voice laced with joy. She looked back at Chloe, giving her hand another squeeze. “Come on, let’s explore a little. I want to see what cool things we can find!”

As Red led Chloe further into the mansion, the floorboards started feeling a little more wobbly. Dust fell from the ceiling with every step they took, and the walls made squeaking noises every so often. Chloe’s stomach dropped as she heard a particularly loud groan from the floorboard underneath her and her girlfriend’s weight. “Red, are you 100% sure this is safe?” she asked, her voice shaking with fear.

Before Red could answer, the floorboards beneath her princess gave way, and Chloe screamed as she held her arms out. Red acted immediately, grabbing her lover’s arms and pulling her to a safer part of the room. The force of the pull sent Red flying backwards, scraping her elbows and cutting her wrist on an exposed metal wire.

Chloe’s eyes widened in panic as she heard her girlfriend wince. “Red! Are you okay?! What hurts?!” she cried out, kneeling down to inspect her girlfriend. Red gritted her teeth, trying to hide the pain. “I’m fine, princess, don’t panic, it’s okay!” Chloe calmed down a little, her breathing still uneven, and sat next to her girlfriend. After a while, Red smirked and said, “I told you I’d keep you safe, my love.”

Chloe gave an anxious and shaky chuckle, still holding her hand tightly. “You always say that, but I don’t know how I feel about this anymore,” she admitted, her voice cracking slightly as tears prickled in her eyes. Red leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair behind Chloe’s ear. “Hey, Bluey, look at me. Nothing’s going to happen to you as long as I’m with you,” she said, kissing her on the cheek.

Chloe nodded, trying to calm her shaky breaths. But as they were getting up, she looked down at the floorboards around them, and a sudden creak sounded beneath their feet, making her heart drop.

Before she could say something, the entirety of the wood beneath them gave way with a loud bang. Chloe yelled, splinters and shards of broken glass flying past her face. Red reacted without a thought, pushing Chloe hard towards the hallway with sturdier boards, just as the floor collapsed beneath her own feet.

“RED!” Chloe’s shrieked through the hallow room. She scrambled to the edge of the hole, coughing as a cloud of dust filled her lungs. Below, through the debris, she could make out her girlfriend’s body slumped on the floor of the level beneath them.

She wasn’t moving.

Chloe’s heart hammered in her chest. “Red! Please, wake up….wake up, my love!” she yelled, her voice hoarse as tears filled her eyes. She reached down through the jagged pit. “God, stay with me, please!” The blue-haired girl ran down the stairs, leaning down over her girlfriend, trying to wake her up.

Chloe pressed her hands against Red’s cheek then her shoulders, tapping her gently at first, then shaking her harder as panic filled her mind. “Red! Wake up! Please, I can’t do any of this without you!” she sobbed, tears running down her face. She put her ear up to the redhead’s chest, looking for the slightest heartbeat. She coughed excessively as dust was still filling her lungs, her vision blurred, and every second Red wasn’t awake made her think of the worst.

“I can’t lose you, Red! Please, open your eyes,” Chloe whined, her voice cracking. She held her world’s hand, squeezing it urgently, urging her to move. “Please, my everything… come back to me! You promised… you promised we would be safe!” Her words came out in trembling sobs, but she couldn’t stop, she wouldn’t stop. She would never leave her like this.

For what felt like ages, Red stayed still, and Chloe’s chest kept getting tighter and tighter. ‘Fuck. No, no, no,’ she thought, pacing back and forth, feeling completely helpless. She couldn’t deal with losing the only person who has ever loved her for her, the only person who saw who she truly was, the only person who knew exactly what she always needed.

After what felt like forever, Red’s hand twitched, then slowly, her eyes fluttered open. “Chloe…?”she groaned weakly, her voice quiet. Relief washed over Chloe like a wave, and she pressed her forehead against Red’s, kissing her all over her face, and clutching her hand like it was her life. “I’m here… I will never let you go,” Chloe wept, soaking Red’s shoulder. “You scared me to death! Please… don’t ever do that again…I cannot ever do this again, my love, please…”

Red coughed lightly, flinching as she tried to move, but a tired smile came up on her lips. “I told you…I’d do anything to keep you safe” she whispered, voice cracking but sweet.

Chloe chuckled hesitantly, still shedding tears, with her hand caressing Red’s cheek with her thumb. “Safe?! Baby, you practically gave me a heart attack!” she whined, half angry, half relieved. Red laughed softly in response, pulling the Auradonian down to kiss her forehead.

“I’d do it over and over for you, my sweetheart,” Red said, her hands holding her girlfriend’s face.

Chloe wrapped her arms tightly around her girl, resting her head in the crook of Red’s neck, and whispering, “Just… please, never leave me. Ever.” They stayed that way, pressed close together, a quiet, soft moment of pure love and appreciation. Nothing else in the world mattered. They had each other, and that was enough.

Chloe didn’t waste a second after that. She put Red’s arm around her shoulders, keeping her weight stable as best she could. “Come on, baby, we’re getting you checked, okay?” she said, her voice still a little shaky with worry. Red leaned against her, groaning.

“I’m fine, princess… really. Let’s just go back to our room,” she whimpered, but the limp she had betrayed her. Chloe said “No way! You’re too prideful and stubborn to admit you’re really hurt but I can see it in your eyes and I can hear it in your voice, my love”

Red whined, “But Blu-“

Chloe cut her off sternly. “Don’t argue about this with me. You scared me to death and I’m going to make sure you’re actually okay.”

By the time they reached the nurse’s office, Chloe was completely shuddering. The nurse’s eyes widened at the sight of the redhead’s injuries, and Chloe guided her girlfriend onto the examination bed. “Red, what happened?” The nurse questioned.

“She had a really bad fall which may or may not have been my fault, I mean, I hope it wasn’t my fault I didn’t mean to, I’m just so scared, please tell me she’s okay…” Chloe rapidly rambled, tears forming in her eyes again.

Red let out a faint yet worried sound, grimacing as her wrist throbbed. “Chloe, Chlo. You’re panicking, dear. Take a breath with me.” And her girlfriend did. Once she had calmed down, red spoke sweetly “It was not your fault, Blue. Do you hear me?” the warmth in her eyes made Chloe’s chest ache with relief.

The nurse cleaned and bandaged Red’s wounds, making sure to check her wrists and ankles. Chloe stayed close, her hand tightly grasping Red’s. “Stay still, my heart! Don’t worry me again!” she fussed, her voice still shaking despite the slight smile on her lips. Red squeezed her hand, letting out a soft, “I’ve got you, darling… I’m okay.”

When the nurse finally gave them the all-clear, Chloe carried Red bridal style back to their dorm. She laid her on her own bed which they had been sharing for a while, brushed some excess debris off of her hair, and adjusted her bandages. Red sighed lovingly as the blue-haired girl laid down next to her. “You… really do treat me like a princess, Chlo. ” she murmured, her voice exhausted.

She laid her head against Chloe’s chest, letting out another tired sigh as Chloe’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Chloe pressed a soft kiss to the top of Red’s head, then another to her forehead, tucking the hair stuck on her face away. Red snuggled closer, whispering a soft, “I love you…so much…” into her girlfriend’s neck, her fingers twiddling with Chloe’s.

The knight smiled through the tears still building up in her eyes, peppering Red with tiny kisses on her cheeks, nose, and lips. “I love you too, my everything, forever,” she whispered, her voice trilled with emotion. Red let out a tiny giggle, reaching up to kiss Chloe’s cheek, and Chloe held her closer, resting her chin on Red’s head.

They stayed that way, together, safe, murmuring soft words of “always” and “forever” between them. The panic and fear of the mansion melted away, leaving just the two of them, hearts beating in sync. In that moment, nothing else mattered, just the two lovers, wrapped up in each other, completely undone for each other.
