Out of Bounds

Summary:

Dating wasn't Gaku's thing. Relationships were a pain and a half. Making friends? Unnecessary. His own company and gaming was always where he found peace.
At least. That’s what he thought.

Notes:

HEAR ME OUT PLEASE!!! 😭
Literally while in the middle of writing my other fic I had the thought. "They're both nonchalant fine shyts. I'm trying to see something real quick." And here we are. I actually think they'd make a good couple.

Like DAMN. Please join me on the GakuNatsu train 😩

Chapter Text

College is so boring, thank god for games.

A month ago Gaku’s friends convinced him to join them in the latest co-op game PC had to offer.

“Dude you gotta try it. The graphics are insane.”

“It’s so much fun. Come on, just play a few games with us.”

Such a drag. Gaku loved  games, but mostly single-player. Teams always ended in someone rage quitting or dropping the game all together. His other playthroughs had gotten a bit boring, too predictable, shitty storylines, not enough thrill.

With a whole week of convincing, Gaku finally gives in to their pleas.

The game however, needed at least 4 players. An even more annoying part of these co-ops, having to have a full team in order to play. Some rando from who knows where at whatever skill level they held, always dragged the team down.

It was a prayer every time someone joined their trio. Usually ending with Narumi sending death threats or trying to dox the poor soul who couldn’t keep up and gets them eliminated.

He had already been permanently banned from a few games in the past. How he still has an account was a mystery to all.

The first few times they played, they lost. Horribly. Deterring Gaku from continuing- there was only so much yelling he could take before getting permanent damage in his ears.

Another Friday night rolled around. After a week jammed with classes and work, it was time to unwind. The moment Gaku gets online, Narumi and Nagi are spamming him on Discord. Mostly Narumi.

NG1228》Hurry up!

NG1228》GET ON!

NG1228》I know you’re online.

NG1228》This time were beating that fucking game.

NG1228》We’ve got it this time, I can feel it.

SN0506》Let’s get it over with Gaku. This guys been blowing up my line since 4.

G1127 》God damn, alright. If we lose again I’m not playing this shit anymore.

SN0506》So long as the 4th guy has SOME skill we’ll win.

The group waits in the lobby, tense to know who will be their lackey as they load in.

-[NS0702] has joined your party.

None of them had played with this guy before. Through the mic, Narumi is already starting his threats.

“Don’t drag us down!”

“ If you suck get off!”

“ Don’t waste my time!”

“ We don’t need any losers on our team!”

The player doesn’t answer back, or leave the game. Looking at their character, his mic was off, as well as teamchat. Checking the rest of his stats, he was at the same level as they were.

Promising.

For the first time since starting the game, they at last got the win. The new guy wiped the floor with them, showing up Narumi who became dead silent midway through the campaign.

A relief. Both for their group and Gaku’s sanity.

In their teamchat, the new guy only types one thing, ‘GG.’ before leaving their server.

He’s really good. Gaku thinks to himself after they win the match.

SN0506 》Damn Narumi, I thought you were ‘the best player’

 G1127 》’Don’t drag us down’

G1127 》Says the guy that got killed first.

NG1228 》SHUT THE FUCK UP

NG1228 》I WASN’T EVEN BEING SERIOUS THIS GAME

NG1228 》WE’RE PLAYING SOMETHING ELSE

SN0506 》Nah, I gotta go to soccer practice. Don’t want to ruin the win streak while it’s up.

G1127 》I don’t think my brain can take another round of your loud ass. I’m hopping off.

NG1228 》Pussies

NG1228 》Lames

[G1127] has logged off

[SN0506] has logged off

NG1228 》GUYS.

The following week, the same conversation happened again. Gaku was stuck in a section of his other game, guess it wouldn’t hurt to hop on.

Once again, the same guy joins their party. Another win under their belts, and a lot less screaming from Narumi. It was a good night for the boys.

After a few more campaigns with the guy, Gaku gets a notification from them on Discord.

[NS0702] sent you a friend request.

[G1127] has accepted the request.

They never spoke to one another there, but when it came time for a co-op, he’d join- becoming a permanent part of their gaming group.

Gaku wasn’t the most social person, he didn’t care much for making new friends or the typical college life most partook in. His friends went to different universities and his siblings were a few grades above him, busy with their own lives and degrees.

But from time to time, they’d drag him out of his cocoon of a dorm to go out with them.

For someone who didn’t socialize more than needed, Gaku still held his own presence around campus.

Extremely athletic without trying, sleeping through lectures yet somehow passing, smoking in restricted areas with his siblings, getting into trouble with them.

Not to mention his features - Well-defined physique, pierced ears, effortless outfits that somehow made him look even hotter, and his face.

Those narrow crimson eyes that never seemed amused, a sharp nose and jawline,  perfectly bowed lips.

Gaku embodied ‘mysterious bad boy’.

Over the 2 years he’d been in college, there was quite a fair share of girls and guys who shot their shots at the man. One after another, he turned them down. Relationships were such a pain. And the LAST thing Gaku wanted.

His last girlfriend was a sweet girl in high school he reluctantly agreed to date after being scolded by his sister. In the end, she broke up with him.

“You never make time for me. You don’t ever want to do anything with me. Dating you is like dating a brick wall.”

What a drag.

Since then, he kept to himself. Mostly. There were a few drunk one-night stands when he first arrived at college. But all ended the same way.

“What are we?”

“Do you like me?”

“Can we see each other again?”

Casual hook ups weren't so casual for Gaku.

People knew now to leave him be, keeping their thirsting friends from getting their heart broken by painful rejection.

It’s Saturday night, and Gaku’s monthly obligation of accompanying his sibling to a function. The party for the night was being held at Akao’s- the girlfriend of  his oldest brother Kei. Her parties were nutritious for being the best and most wild, being shut down by cops on a few occasions.

The semester had just started, and this was the first big party being held. It was definitely going to be a rager.

Because of his rare appearance at these sorts of things, Gaku put juuuuust a little more effort into his wardrobe. Not really though.

Throwing on a tank and flannel, he wore faded loose jeans and sneakers. A few jewelry pieces are thrown into the mix to add flare. Looking at himself once over it was good enough for him. Ready to go.

Gaku walks down to the bottom floor of his dorms to wait outside for his brother to pick him up. The April breeze felt nice against his skin now that the sun had long gone. His brother always insisted on being on time to these things. Forcing Gaku to stay longer.

He takes a deep breath, like it’s his last one before dying.

Kei’s silhouette gets closer, waving to him. Gaku waves back. “‘Sup.”

“Ready?” Kei asks, patting him on the shoulder.

“Yeah, I guess.” Gaku shrugs as they begin their walk.

Kei wasn’t much of an outgoing person either, but since dating Akao, had become a social butterfly of his own. Gaku knew he was more excited to see her than to party.

Luckily no driving was needed for tonight- Akao lived a few blocks off campus in a house with her 2 roommates.

As they walk, Gaku tries to get a feel of the situation.

“Is Haruma and Kuma coming?” Gaku questions.

“Not tonight, they couldn’t take off work to make it, so you’ll be on your own.”

“Oh.” Gaku’s mood soured a bit hearing the terrible news.

“You need more friends, Gaku. You can’t always rely on them when you don’t want to socialize.” Kei laughs.

“The people at these are always the same. It’s boring.” Gaku complains as they cross the street.

“Then maybe you’re the one who needs to find someone to befriend instead of just the ones that come up to you.” Kei offers.

“I guess.”

As they got closer to the house,  it was barely hitting 10PM. The bumping of music and loud voices come into earshot. Gaku knew it would be a long night. As his mood dampers, Kei’s got more pumped.

The door was already open when they arrived, people flowing in and out of the home, drinks in hand, chatting about college and who they’re trying to get lucky with. Gaku was already tuning it all out.

Walking through the familiar space, they make their way to the grand kitchen where Akao is shotgunning a beer with Nagumo and Sakamoto. The crowd around them goes wild as she beats them, pumping her empty can in the air, victorious.

When her eyes land on the two, she quickly runs over to greet them, throwing her arm over Kei’s neck.

“Kei! Gaku! Welcome! Can I get you guys something to drink?” Akao offers, pointing to their plethora of bottles and chasers on the island counter.

“Surprise me.” Kei answers, smiling from ear to ear.

“I’ll take whatever.” Gaku answers absentmindedly, looking around the already filling room.

“On it!” Akao answers, giving a giant thumbs up.

She walks back over to the makeshift bar, concocting what will end up being the strongest mixed drink known to man. A second later she’s shoving the drinks into both their hands.

“Drink up boys! We’re just getting started!” Akao yells. She turns around briefly to grab her own drink, bringing it to toast with the two.

“It’s a new year, LET’S PARTY!” She screams to the adoring crowd of strangers and friends, her electric energy always sets the vibe for any gathering.

After her announcement, the night truly begins.

Beer pong, shots, dancing, people singing at the top of their lungs, everything you could ever need at a party.  At every spot there was a table, some sort of drinking game was being played. Outside, people were scattered around the backyard and large pool, some sitting on the edge, others splashing water at those trying to stay dry. And in the darker corners, those who partook in smoking of either kind.

Taking a sip from his drink, Gaku almost throws up.

What’s in this? Everclear?

Beside him, Kei drinks with the most serene face ever, watching his girlfriend beat every challenger that approaches. Love was such a strange thing.

It only lasts a few people before Akao gets bored of winning. Taking her crown and exiting the center of attention, she joins her boyfriend.

“How you guys doing? Need another drink, Gaku?” She chimes.

“Nah I’m good with this one.” Gaku lies, taking another burning sip from the cup.

“Let’s play some beer pong then Kei!”

She hooks her arm around his, leading him to the table set up in the dining area. Gaku follows them, wading through the drunks that are grouped together.

“Sakamoto! Nagumo! It’s y’all against me and Kei!” Akao calls out, summoning her best friends slash roomies.

Gaku watches from the sideline as the group plays.

Akao could outdrink any fool, but beer pong was a free game. It all came down to who still had the most skill, and the least amount of liquor in them.

Standing at one end of the table, Sakamoto and Nagumo re-set the cups. On the other, Kei does all the work.

“Ready to get your ass kicked?” Nagumo asks, bouncing the small white ball on the table.

“Oh please. In your dreams.” Akao snorts.

“We’ll see about that.” Nagumo chimes.

The two stare at each other, ball in hand.

“On three.” Akao says.

1,2,3 they take the shot at the same time. Akao misses.

Nagumo makes the cup in the middle. His team will start first. Akao groans at her missed shot, moving the cup out of the way that Nagumo had made.

Stepping aside for Sakamoto to take his place, he throws it without any effort, making another shot.

“Balls back.” Sakamoto says in a cool toned voice.

Those who came to watch, cheer for their team of choice.

They throw again. Sakamoto makes another, but Nagumo misses his.

Already 3 out of 10 for them.  Akao drinks one of the cups, and Kei the other two.

Akao throws again, making one. Then Kei stands to take his shot.

“Come one Kei!” Gaku calls out.

Others cheer him on as well while he focuses. Another one in.

“HA! Gimme those balls losers!” Akao boasts.

Back and forth they continue the game for a  while, getting more aggressive with each shot.

They dynamic duo take the win.

“LETS GO!” Nagumo yells, high-fiving Sakamoto in their victory.

“You only won because the balls are so slippery.” Akao huffs.

“Sureee Rion. Whatever you say.” Nagumo laughs.

Gaku stays close to Kei for as long as possible, hoping the time would pass by faster. It was reaching the peak hour for the party, only a few more to go before people began to trickle out.

It was working until Kei got on him.

“Gaku if you don’t go make some sort of human connection I’m making you come out next week too.” Kei pesters, holding Rion up at his side who’s started to feel the effects of the massive alcohol she consumed.

Gaku’s face drops, a bit butthurt that his brother would dare try and make him do this again.

“Go outside, those people seem more like your type of crowd.” Kei points. As much as he loved Gaku, he also had his own fun to have. That being the person he was holding.

“Jump in the pool! You’ll make some real waves doing that.” Akao teases, leaning back and forth.

Gaku stays stiff in place, calling Kei’s bluff.

Kei gives him a stern look, one Gaku knows too well. Kei wasn’t going to let up, if anything he would add to torturing Gaku with the threat of large gatherings.

Akao looks between them enjoying their silent cat fight.

“Go on.” Kei states, folding his arms.

“Tch. Fine.” Gaku gives in reluctantly, the weight of his choices painfully obvious.

“Have fun!” They both yell out like loving  parents sending their kid off on their first day of school.

Music bumps even louder in the backyard, the bass of the song vibrating in Gaku’s body.

He wasn’t nearly drunk enough to be social just yet.

Finding an open corner of the wall away from where Kei can see, Gaku makes it his hideaway.

Stupid Kei.

Shoving his hands into his pockets, he watches the different interactions going on.

A guy splashing water all over his friends, laughing like a maniac as they curse him out.

Stoners high out of their minds in the corner talking about how a mirror can see what’s behind a towel held in front of it.

Too many guys trying their hardest to flirt with very uninterested women. Even he was cringing internally at their terrible jokes.

A group of girls giggling amongst themselves, one of them pointing in Gaku’s direction. They looked younger than other party goers, probably freshmen.

Gaku already knew where this was heading.

Like clockwork, the bravest of the group walks up to Gaku. She wasn’t bad looking, wavy blonde hair, an outfit that accentuated her figure, light blue eyes.

Twirling a stand of hair around her finger, she starts talking to Gaku.

“I couldn’t help but notice you all alone over here, are you here by yourself?” She asks, flirtation in her voice.

“Nah, I’m here with my brother.” Gaku answers coolly.

“Oh did he leave? Would you like some company?” She asks seductively, batting her lashes.

“I’m good.” Gaku answers flatly, not even a whisper of a smile on his face, shutting her down completely.

Appalled and shocked by his lack of enthusiasm, she leaves in a huff back to her friends. Unsuccessful in her pursuit.

Rallying her group, they move to the other end of the yard, far away from Gaku.

They probably went to talk shit about him. Whatever. At least they weren’t going to bother him anymore.

With a drawn out sigh, he pulls a pack of cigarettes from his pocket.

Gaku was ready to go home, but until he talked to someone he couldn’t. That chick counted right? Kei would definitely not buy it.

He takes a drag, leaning on the brick wall, one hand in his pocket, the party raging on. He’d picked up smoking from Rion and Sakamoto. All the times he’d been over with Kei, eventually he joined them in the unhealthy habit.

After a few more hits, he starts to feel the buzz of the nicotine. More relaxed than before, he listens to the music that somehow is louder than the massive amount of people yelling outside.

With his eyes closed, Gaku vibes out, taking another hit.

Gaku doesn’t notice when someone stands next to him, leaning on the wall just the same.

The guy taps him on the shoulder.

“What?” Gaku asks, opening back up his eyes to look in the direction of the touch.

“Do you have any more of those?” The guy asks in a very slow monotone voice.

“Yeah, why?” Gaku replies, raising an eyebrow to the stranger.

“Mind if I bum one off you? My friends got mine soaked.”

Gaku gives him a look over. His clothes had large wet spots scattered on various parts of his body.

He felt a bit bad for the guy. Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out another, silently handing it over.

“‘Preciate it.” He answers, grabbing the cigarette. Patting himself down, the stranger pokes him again. “Sorry. Do you have a light too?”

Taking the lighter out, Gaku moves his hand to light the cigarette for him. He’d lost enough lighters from being so kind in the past.

While the stranger ignites the cigarette, Gaku takes a peek at his face. More notably, the moles that seemed to have been carefully placed below his eyes, two on one side, and one on the other.

“Thanks.” He mutters with the cig between his lips, leaning back on the wall.

“No problem.” Gaku replies, returning back to his position.

The two smoke in silent company. Gaku still needed to talk to someone. This guy didn’t seem too bad.

Taking a drag, Gaku strikes up a conversation for the first time in a long time.

“You know anyone here?” Gaku asks casually.

“Yeah, you see those people over there. Those are my friends.” The guy points with his cigarette.

In the distance is a mixed group of  people chatting and laughing. Gaku instantly recognizes one of them with their turquoise hair.

“Oh you know Akira, her sister is dating my brother.” Gaku replies.

“Yeah, her and my roommate Shin dragged me out tonight.” He comments pointing to the blonde haired guy of the group.

“My brother dragged me here too.” Gaku sighs, taking a drag.

“Not into the party scene?”

“Nah, not really.”

“Me either. Too much going on. Too many drunks, I don’t get the appeal.”

“Seriously.” Gaku snorts.

For once, the conversation flowed smoother than water down a stream.

Flicking his finished cigarette away, the stranger pushes himself off the wall.

“Well, I gotta make sure these guys make it home alive. See yah around. Thanks again for the cig.”

“See yah.” Gaku nods, sending off the stranger.

That wasn’t terrible.

Once he finishes his own, Gaku goes back into the house in search of his brother, only to find Sakamoto and Nagumo first.

“Have you guys seen Kei?” Gaku questions, looking around the houses that’s started to empty.

“He left with Rion a bit ago, told us to tell you that you didn’t have to wait up if we ran into you.” Sakamoto answers, holding up Nagumo by his side. He was clearly out  for the count, his head resting on Sakamoto’s shoulder already dozing off, a bit of drool dripping onto his shirt.

“Ah. Alright, thanks for telling me. I’ll catch you guys later.” Gaku answers, waving mostly at Sakamoto.

He walks past the leftover people that were too drunk to leave, almost tripping over one of them on his way out.

“God damn stupid ass drunks.” Gaku grumbles to himself, finally getting out of the house.

As he walks back to his dorm, he spots the stranger again with his group of friends walking back to campus.

Like rounding up a group of dogs, he was chasing after one of the girls who was trying to make a break for it while also trying to keep track of the other inebriated people.

Gaku couldn’t help but chuckle to himself.

That must be such a pain.

He was in a better mood than when he had left, without being with his family. A rarity.

Back at his single dorm, Gaku checks the time. 2am. He had ended up being there the whole party. Good thing there was no class tomorrow and he had the day off.

After showering and switching into some sweats, he sits at his PC.

Nagi and Narumi were both offline. Kinda strange, they both usually were always on. No matter the day. Probably fell asleep or went out as well.

- [NS0702] is online. -

Having a good night, Gaku invites them to play a game with him. One that didn’t need more people in the party.

They accept.

After a few successful games, sleepiness overcomes Gaku. He sends him a message.

G1127》Good game tonight. Headed to bed, later.

NS0702 》GG. You should try the new Resident Evil if you haven’t already. Think you’d like it.

G1127》I’ll check it out tomorrow.

It was the first real message they had sent. Smiling to himself, Gaku logs off. He had managed to talk to two different people today. A personal best.

Fast asleep, a text pops up.

KEI [4:03AM]

-Make any friends tonight Gaku?

Chapter Text

The first weeks of classes starts without anything major.

Being a huge oversleeper, Gaku’s lectures all began in the afternoon this semester.

(He was almost expelled for his absences the previous year. Claiming he could ‘totally do morning classes’)

Walking through the courtyard, Gaku yawns outloud, still groggly from a late night of gaming. The afternoon sun stings his eyes as he passes by others on their way to class. The bag he carries with him was slung loosely over his shoulder, the only contents inside being his PSP, snacks, and some cigs. The essentials.

What’s my first class again? I think Psychology.

Sauntering into room 406, he takes a seat in the farthest corner away from the professor. The class was already filled with other students, those more eager to learn than Gaku. Idle chatter fills the room until the professor takes his place at the board to begin their lesson for the day. Notebooks and laptops open up simultaneously, listening attentively to the words of the teacher.

Putting in his headphones, Gaku throws his hoodie over his head, getting comfortable in his seat for the next hour. Stuffing his hands into his pocket, he lets the room drone out until he passes out.

Gaku would just bribe someone into giving him their notes or something. He’d made it by the past semesters threatening people for answers and cheat sheets, allowing him to pass the courses. Though there were classes he could easily breeze through, he still didn’t care to try. Uzuki had helped pick what courses he should take, “Education is important Gaku, you’ll need to know these things in the future.” he had told him on multiple occasions.

Like a timer, as soon as the first notebook closed, Gaku would wake up, knowing the lecture was finally over. As the room starts to clear out, Gaku gathers himself, wiping the bit of drool that had crusted on the corner of his mouth.

Damn that was a good nap.

A bit more aware and awake, Gaku exits with the other stranglers. Tapping his usual victim on the shoulder, Gaku asks for their notes. The poor soul quickly hands over the copy with sweaty palms, already accustomed to Gaku harassing them. Gaku gingerly takes it from his hands, thanking him with a smug smile before leaving the building.

Today he only had two classes to go to, the other being Biology. Which was located on the other side of campus. There was still 30 minutes before it started, and only took about 10 minutes to walk over to. Weighing his options for the passtime, he sees who’s over in the usual smoke spot hidden between the tree line and tall buildings.

Kei and Kuma are already there, both looking a bit drained.

“Hey.” Gaku calls out as he walks up to join them. The two look over in his direction giving him a small welcoming wave.

“How’d your class go?” Kumanomi asks as Gaku takes the spot next to her.

“Fine I guess. I don’t know.” Gaku shrugs, pulling out his own smokes. Kumanomi swiftly grabs him by the neck into a chokehold, causing him to drop all his stuff. “You were asleep weren’t you?” She sneers, pushing his head down.

Gaku places his hands under her arm, trying to wiggle out of her tight grip. “No.” he lies.

“You don’t even have a pencil in there.”

“Uhhhh. Yeah I do.”

“A vape does not count smartass.” Her grip strengthens, almost cutting off his circulation.

“I forgot okay! I was tired.” Gaku replies, not completely lying, still trying to get out of the chokehold.

Chuckling, Kei finally steps in. “Now, now Kuma, it’s alright. He’ll make us proud. Won’t you Gaku?” He looks over to the distressed Gaku. Distracted by Kei, Gaku manages to slip from under Kumanomi.

Rubbing his neck, Gaku reluctantly answers, “Yeah, sure.” Uzuki pats him on the shoulder, “Good. I gotta get to my next class, see you guys for dinner later?” He asks, getting ready to head to the sociology hall.

“I have work til 7 so I’ll be a bit late.” Gaku replies, picking up his things from the ground.

“That’s alright. Pay attention in your class today, okay? I wanna hear all about it later.” It wasn’t a threat, but it was definitely a message for Gaku.

Following suit, Kumanomi pinches his cheek before she leaves, giving him a stern look. “Me too.”

As his older siblings leave, Gaku rubs his cheek where Kumanomi had pulled on. “Geez, always up my ass.” He mumbles to himself, careful not to speak too loud.

Looking at the time, he has a little less than 15 minutes before his class. Sighing, he lights the cigarette for a less than quick smoke.

Taking Kei words to heart, Gaku tries to listen to the boring words spewing from the professor. He holds his head in his hand while his other taps against the table, bored out of his mind.

How does anyone pay attention to this every day?

Even with his attempt, he barely could remember half of what was said, more confused than anything by the words that had been spoken during the long class. Not having anything to write on didn’t help either.

At least half his day was over.

Swinging by the dining hall, Gaku grabs a burger for the road before his shift. Food in hand, he spots Uzuki at one of the tables with his group.

The four were all in the same grade, stuck together like glue since freshman year. Looking at them, Gaku felt a pang of envy. It wasn’t that he didn’t have his own friends, but he missed the availability to hang out in person with those his own age, those with the same interests as him.

Watching them banter and goof off, it be a lie to say he didn’t want it for himself, though he was always welcomed with open arms. Basically already embedded into their group and the baby they all teased.

As soon as he got into their proximity the playful jabs began.

“Oooo look who it is!” Rion beams. The others' eyes turn to Gaku, greeting him as he passes by.

Gaku pauses in front of the table, “Sup.”

“Off to work?” Rion asks.

“Yeah.” Gaku sighs, taking a bite from his burger.

Resting his hands on his cheeks, Nagumo prods, “Hey, who was that cutie you were talking to at the party hmmm?”

“Who?” Gaku asks, puzzled.

“You know whooo, that guy you were smoking with.”

The hot news piqued the interest of everyone at the table, especially Uzuki. More than before, they all had their eyes and ears on Gaku, intrigued.

At first, Gaku had assumed he was talking about the random girl who had come up to him, but hearing ‘guy’ he remembered instantly. He hadn’t gotten his name then, only remembering their short convo, and those moles. Thinking on it, maybe he should’ve asked, he had enjoyed the company of the stranger. Taking a mental note, if he ran into him again he’d get his name and maybe his contact info.

Knowing this degenerate group though, anything he said would be twisted wildly out of proportion. Choosing his words carefully, Gaku gives them his bland version of an answer.

“Ohhh yeah, he just asked for a cigarette after his got soaked. I’m surprised you even remembered, you were so shitfaced slobbering all over Sakamoto.” Gaku retorts. An attempt to redirect their attention, and it works.

“Bahaha! Oh my god please tell me you got a photo!” Rion cackles, pointing at Nagumo mockingly.

Nagumo's ears burn up, “ No I didn’t! Sakamoto, tell them!” He whines. Sakamoto doesn’t help him in the slightest, taking another bite from his meal. His silence being the loudest answer, making Rion and Uzuki laugh harder.

Gaku uses the diversion to get away from them before they can pester him more. Not that there was really much more to say on the subject anyway. He makes his silent getaway, ghosting past them while Nagumo shakes Sakamoto violently to defend him and the other two unable to contain their amusement.

Gaku still needed to swing by his apartment to change before heading to work. Eating as he walks, he watches others around campus with their own groups, how they mingled together. In a way, they all reminded him of his brother's friends, stupid yet endearing.

He quietly laughs to himself, What a handful.

Stepping through the sliding doors, Gaku’s boss, Kashima, is in there manning the store alone. He had gotten the job through Uzuki’s connection. Apparently Kashima admired his brother quite a bit, anything Uzuki asked for, Kashima would make happen.

At first everyone assumed he must have a crush on him, but quickly learned it was more of an idol situation. Uzuki never minded, Kashima was always very respectful towards him and anyone with him, though he was a bit of an oddball in his own sense.

Gaku has been working at Kashima’s Recycling Shop for a couple of months for extra cash, since Uzuki finally put a cap on funding Gaku’s excessive spending of games and food. Plus, it would be good for him to be in the real world learning the ins and outs of business, according to both Kashima and Uzuki.

“Good afternoon, Gaku.” Kashima greets with a bow, always over the top with him.

“Hey Mr. Kashima.” Gaku waves, making his way to the back to clock in and grab his work apron. When he gets back, Kashima hands him a piece of paper.

“Here’s today’s to-do list. Please get it done before you leave.”

Gaku takes the paper, looking over it, it wasn’t much, just cleaning up the store mostly.

“Gottcha.”

Kashima takes off his own apron, leaving it on their rack in the backroom. “I’ll be heading out now, take good care of the store and don’t forget to lock up.”

“Will do, see yah.” Gaku waves a hand, sending off Kashima.

It was a cush job, Kashima wasn’t picky on tardiness, always let him leave on time, and had good benefits. Though the store wasn’t partially busy most of the time. Gaku wondered how he afforded staying afloat.

For the first couple of hours, there wasn’t a single customer. Gaku sat at the counter playing on his PSP until he got tired of the game.

Guess I’ll take care of the list.

Putting his gaming system away, he goes back over the list again. Dust products, sweep the floors, and wipe the windows. Easy enough. Something to do to kill time until his shift ends.

It ended up taking more time than expected, the store was filled to the brim with all sorts of gadgets and gently used appliances looking for a new home. They offered repairs as well but that was only when Kashima was there, Gaku did not have the careful hands for intricate work such as fixing someone's laptop.

Gaku was sweeping the back of the store when the door chime rang for the first time all evening. Setting the broom against a corner, he makes his way back up to the front.

“Welcome in.” Gaku drones to the man standing at the counter.

He’s wearing a hoodie rolled up to his elbows, his hands resting in the pocket. A headset hanging around his neck. Low Midnight blue eyes, those mismatched dots that were decorated under each one.

In the bright lighting, he looked young, except with tired lines under them similar to Gaku’s own. A more than common thing amongst college students.

Shaggy dark hair that almost touched his eyes curled up around the ends. His energy is very aloof, like he’d much rather be somewhere else.

When he looks at Gaku however, the flat line of his lips twitch ever so slightly.

It’s that guy from the party.

“What can I help you with?” Gaku asks, putting up his best customer service voice, unsure if he remembered him or not.

“Is Kashima around?” He asks in a monotone voice.

“Nah, he went home already.”

“Oh. Do you know if he’s hiring? I’m trying to find another job.”

“Sorry man, not at the moment, got a full staff.”

“Damn, well thanks anyway.”

They both stand there for a moment, an awkward silence casting over them. Gaku wasn’t sure what else to say, he wanted to inquire more about the guy and didn’t know how to go about it. He really needed to get better at socializing.

The guy was already turning to leave. Trying not to overthink it; he asks the first thing that comes to mind.

“What happened with your other job?”

He stops in his tracks. Letting out a huff, he rubs the back of his head. “There was an ‘accident’ at the warehouse. So I'm kinda out of a job right now.” Gaku could tell in his words that he definitely had something to do with it, but didn’t want to pry further into a stranger's personal business.

Once again he was at a standstill trying to make conversation.

“Got some interesting music going on, is it yours?” The man asks, looking around.

“Hell no, Kashima has it on a set playlist, said it ‘helps the brain’ or whatever. I wish it was my music.” Gaku snorts. If he could, he’d change it himself, the repeating songs haunting him outside of work and in his nightmares.

The guy chuckles lowly, “I was gonna say, it doesn’t seem like something someone like you would listen to.”

The comment flickers a spark in Gaku, that the guy had taken notice of him, even in such a simple manner. Before the chance was gone, Gaku asked the most important question he had forgotten during their first encounter.

“What was your name again?”

“Seba.” He replies coolly.

Seba, huh? I’ll have to remember it.

“Well Seba, feel free to stop by again if you need something fixed.” Gaku wistfully grins.

“For sure, I’ll see you around campus Gaku?” Seba questions, glancing at his name tag.

“Definetly.”

Gaku took notice of the slight height difference of Seba having to look up as his crimson eyes meet his sapphire ones.

Seba waves goodbye, setting off into the outside world while Gaku closes up for the night.

A stroke of luck that he would show up at his job. Maybe he should’ve gotten his contact info. Gaku didn’t feel the need to ask in the moment, letting things sprout as organically as it was planted.

It was a bit strange. Classes had already started and he had yet to see Seba around at all, maybe he had early classes or super late ones.

Gaku hadn’t paid much attention to anything outside his own bubble, busy with his own studies and job.

He’d be more attentive of his surroundings in hopes of running into him again moving forward. Slowly easing his way into what could become a new friendship for the loner.

As he did the last of his work, there was a bit of more enthusiasm in his movements.

Muffled conversation echoes from the small living room in Uzuki’s apartment. Haruma, Kumanomi and Kei seated in a circle as Gaku knocks on the door. Uzuki gets up to let him in, “Perfect timing Gaku, dinners just about ready.” he beams, steeping to the side to let Gaku pass through.

With the final members' arrival, they move to the dinner table near the kitchen, the table already set for them. Gaku takes the spot across from Kei, watching as he brings over their dish for the evening, lasagna.

“Trying new recipes again?” Gaku asks as he sets it down in the center.

“Mhm, Italians have such robust flavors I figured we should try it together.” Kei replies, taking his seat.

The aroma of cheese and tomatoes fill his nose, his stomach growling in anticipation. Kumanomi takes the knife to divide up pieces, plating it for each of them. Knowing Gaku, she gives him a bigger piece than the others.

While eating, Uzuki glances up to see Gaku’s sparkling expression. “Is it good?”

“It’s amazing” Gaku mumbles with a forkful stuffed in his mouth.

“Yeah Kei, this is fantastic.” Kumanomi praises.

“You’re really getting good at cooking.” Haruma adds.

Uzuki beams, more than happy at the results. Family time was a key part of their routine, a time to unwind, check on each other, and enjoy a home cooked meal.

After eating to their hearts content, they move back to the living room. Sitting on the floor, Gaku lets Kumanomi play with his hair, checking to see if he had dead ends to trim, half listening to Haruma and Uzuki’s problems.

“It’s only been a week and we’re already assigned a huge project. I have training to worry about too.” Haruma sighs.

“The balance of school and sports has always been a tricky one. Probably gonna have to redo your schedule to fit everything in.” Uzuki comments, thinking on how to help.

“I should’ve gone with a different course.” Haruma huffs.

“What about you Gaku, how’s Biology?” Uzuki asks.

Of course he remembers. Shit.

It was better to be truthful than get jumped by all of them for lying again.

“I really don’t understand half of what that lady is saying. Microbiomes, molecules, it all sounds the same.” Gaku answers.

“You’re remembering the words though, I’m sure it’ll make sense soon. Take notes, it makes a world of a difference.”

“Yeah Yeah, I know.”

“I am curious, who’s your new friend Gaku? You ran before I could ask you earlier.” The three look at him the same way the other did at the dining hall, extremely curious. Why was his social life such a specter for everyone? He couldn’t understand it.

Ugh. Here we go with this again.

“I wouldn’t call him a friend exactly. We’ve only spoken once.” Gaku lies. Unfortunately Uzuki can read him like a book.

“Your face tells me otherwise Gaku.” Uzuki hums. “You want to be friends with them, don’t you?”

Gaku turns shy, looking off in the other direction. “Maybe.” He whispers. Kumanomi pulls on both sides of his cheeks teasingly, “Aweeee how cute, our little Gaku is finally coming out of his shell.”

Haruma chuckles, “Friendship is an important factor in sportsmanship, good on you Gaku.” patting him on the back.

“Leh go of mah fashe.” Gaku slurs, Kumamoni still tugging on his face.

“Nuh uh, this is a momentous occasion, Kei take a photo.” Kumanomi jests, but Uzuki pulls his phone out anyway, snapping a picture of them. Each one with wide toothy smiles, Gaku unamused on the floor with Kumanomi forcing Gaku’s mouth into a grin.

“Yuh guys er so annoyin.” Gaku groans as they all giggle looking at the photo. Internally, a warmth filled his heart.

G1127》I can just go to bed.

NG1228》... Ready up.

NG1228》Please.

G1127》That’s what I thought.

Even though Gaku had invited NS0702 into their groupchat, he declined everytime. He couldn’t blame him, you have to have a special type of patience to deal with Narumi. Switching to their private chat, he sends him an invite to join their game.

[NS0702 accepted your invite.]

After their single round of another victory (Thank god) Narumi demands another round, to which Gaku simply changes his status to offline, their chat getting flooded with notifications from the aggressive gamer.

Gaku starts getting ready for bed, leaving Discord open while he changes. Brushing his teeth, he goes to turn his PC off, seeing another message pop up.

NS0702》Good game, are you gonna be on tomorrow?

G1127》Yeah, I’ll let you know whenever I am.

G1127》I checked out the game you recommended. You were right, I might end up playing that instead tbh.

NS0702》Had a feeling you would. Let me know.

G1127》For sure. Later.

[NS0702 is offline]

[G1127 is offline]

Laying in bed, Gaku felt jittery even though he was exhausted. The day playing back in his mind, the promise of seeing Seba again, and playing with NS0702 more. Knowing the door was open now, Gaku was going to give it his all.

Notes:

I'll say it again, I love the family dynamic of Slurs group. Siblings in every universe. It reminds me of my own, especially big sister Kumanomi. 🥰
In the next chapter the ball will get rolling into their friendship. The online aspect of the fic will be a bit smaller moving forward, but will still have a key role in the story when the time comes. (This is about Gaku not being a hermit haha so that means more time in the real world with real people.)

A HUGGGGGGGE thank you to the people who kudos and bookmark. It moves me to keep going on this rare pair! I'll be sure to deliver something worthy ( ˘ ³˘)❤

Chapter 3: New Contact

Finally got around to finishing this chapter. I’m still battling with this horrible writers block. Bleh..

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Wake up.

Gym.

Class.

Work.

Game.

Sleep.

Repeat.

Vexed by the monotony of his routine, Gaku sought to catch Seba around campus. Looking for him turned out to be like a needle in a haystack. He was sure somehow by walking the campus grounds every single day that at least once they would run into each other. He could go ask Akira directly of his whereabouts, but refrained. Rion being her older sister, he knew it would lead to their entire friend group dogging on him. Somehow it seemed more of a hassle than his blind searching.

As if Seba had vanished into thin air,  Gaku had to wonder if in actuality they went to different campuses and it was all a big misunderstanding. During his evening shifts, Gaku had hoped maybe he would stop by again, but he never did.

Days came and passed waiting, blurring together into a bleeding line.

Beads of sweat form on Gaku’s temple, his heart pulsing with adrenaline.

Furiously throwing a right hook into the punching bag, it swings back wildly, the chains rattling from the hard impact. Swiveling fast towards Gaku, he pivots his foot to the left, kicking the other one up to strike. Visualizing the red bag as a zombie, Gaku immediately uppercuts his fist into the firm leather again, making an indent from where he’s hit repeatedly.

Back and forth he spars with the inanimate object until the alarm goes off in his ears. Halting his attacks, Gaku silently watches the punching bag spin and sway until it stills.

With shallow breaths, Gaku wipes the sweat from his face, lowering his headphones to hang around his neck. His pulse steadily calms back down, satisfied by his light session. Walking over to where he placed his belongings, he takes a large gulp from his water bottle, checking the notifications piling up on his phone.

KEI [9:24 AM]

-Library @4 today?

GAKU [10:44 AM]

-Hard pass.

KEI [10:46AM]

-I’ll buy you food after

GAKU [10:47AM]

-I’ll be there

KEI [10:50AM]

-Great 😊

After constant pestering from Kumanomi and Uzuki about his studies, Gaku had to actually start paying attention in class now. Well, enough to get them off his case, which included studying with them once a week. His notes were messy and unorganized, some handwritten, others on his laptop. An eyesore to anyone besides himself to read. For the courses he was struggling to understand, Gaku continued to get his notes from someone more educated in the subjects between classes.

Tossing his phone back into the side pocket, Gaku unravels the tape from his hands methodically, dismissing the unopened texts from Narumi and DM’s from strangers. Grabbing his duffle bag, he makes his way towards the locker room.

The accumulated sweat clung to his shirt, making it difficult to peel off. Once he frees himself of the sticky garments, he goes to one of the showers in the far back of the rows. Stepping out of his slides, the tiles were smooth and cold on his feet entering the stall.

Turning the squeaky knob, he lets the tepid water cascade over his entire body, closing his eyes as he fully gets under the stream. With vigor, he scrubs his body from head to toe until it's a bright flush pink. He stands in the open shower for a moment longer, taking a deep breath.

It’s Monday again.

Wrapping his towel tightly around his waist, goosebumps prickle on his skin stepping into the pathway. Water drips from his damp hair and onto his body as he walks back towards the main area of the locker room, making jagged lines down the contours of his toned back.

At his locker, he turns the dial until it clicks open. The day had barely begun, yet his eyes were already drained of life. Using most of his energy during his workout, Gaku desired an obscene amount of caffeine before he headed back to the university. Something full of chemicals and carbonation with a hint of battery acid would do the trick.

Tossing his towel on the long bench, Gaku quickly began to change. Slipping on a loose pair of track pants, when he goes to grab his shirt, he sees something in the corner of his eyes entering the locker room. Instantly glancing up, the door was perfectly shut, not even a swish of movement .

He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but he could’ve sworn he saw a flash of black hair peeking in.

Probably just one of those shy gym guys.

Gaku sat in his usual spot in the furthest row, his eyes heavy and head throbbing from lack of sleep. Energy drink in hand, he takes small, casual sips, forcing his eyes to remain open.

The professor's words carry to Gaku’s ears like sandpaper.

“In the field of epidemiology, a vector is used to describe an organism that transmits infection from one host to another.” His voice was withered and gravelly as he spoke aloud. Using a laser, the elderly man circles around a few lines of code on the large screen. “But that’s not what we’re looking for. Here we have… when you see.. magnitude and direction…” Gaku’s head bobbles back and forth, every other word becoming white noise, the bright projection turning into a blurry mist.

Opening his eyes again, the room has almost entirely cleared out, given a few stranglers speaking with the professor at his podium. Missing over half the lecture, Gaku curses under his breath.

Kuma’s gonna be up my ass later for sure.

Looking down at the open document of half written notes, there’s a few papers perfectly laid on top of the keyboard. A copy of notes from today. Gaku scans the room to see if the person who’d left it was still there; no one but himself remained.

He didn’t have anyone he was borrowing notes from for his computer science course. Analyzing the sheets, they were extremely well written notes. Highlighted and with clear examples, even a child could easily understand its contents.

Gaku mentally thanks whoever kindly did this for him. Closing his laptop, he carefully placed the papers into the clutter of his bag. Slinging it over his shoulder, he leaves the barren lecture hall.

The afternoon sun shines down on Gaku as he strolled through the courtyard, beams slipping between the large buildings. A gentle breeze wisps through his hair, rustling the leaves on the perfect row of trees. Scents of the spring flowers drift sweetly with the wind.

Arriving at the library, Uzuki is already seated at one of the tables. Engrossed in one of his books, simultaneously taking notes and sticking tabs on sections of the pages, he made studying look easy, almost enjoyable. Gaku takes the seat across from him, setting his backpack on the table.

“There you are, Gaku. Thought you were gonna bail on me again.” Uzuki teases, glancing up from his book to meet his younger brother’s eyes.

“You promised me food, how could I pass up such a generous offer.” Gaku smirks, pulling out his laptop. Uzuki smiles and goes back to his work, leaving Gaku to his own devices. He was a lot more lenient compared to Kumanomi, using gentle encouragement versus a hard hand.

Checking his assignments, he had one that was due by midnight for his computer science class he’d put off until now. Opening up the exercise quiz, it wouldn’t take more than an hour to complete. Grabbing his jumble of notes, he starts going through the questions.

For the most part he was doing the practice coding correctly, until he reached the final section about vectors. Pinching the bridge of his nose, his head steams from exhaustion. Sleeping through class did nothing in alleviating the headache humming behind his eyes. With a sigh, he leans back in his chair, staring at the missing lines as if the answer would magically appear on the screen if he stared hard enough.

It was about time for a break.

Rocking back and forth on the heels of the wooden chair, he thought again about Seba. Where was he? He’d said he’d see him around. That was a lie. Gaku however, wasn’t exactly putting any effort into actually finding him. The campus was massive, but in communal areas you could run into just about anyone if you tried, and he was keeping a keen eye out in those spots. What a drag. He wasn’t going to manhunt the guy.

Maybe it was a lost cause, better to let go than worry over.

The thought seemed depressing, making Gaku’s guts churn uncomfortably. He didn’t want to linger on it any longer and sets the chair back down to the ground.

Resuming his assignment, Gaku remembered the papers left on his laptop. Shuffling around his bag, he pulls out the pristine notes to the top of the stack next to him. Reading over them, he easily inserts the knowledge into the blank boxes, getting the question correct. Gaku breezes through the last few problems with ease, thanks to the mysterious notes gifted to him.

The green 90% reflected on the screen happily. A sigh of relief comes from Gaku. It was more than enough to keep Kumanomi’s wrath at bay for another day. Uzuki glances up from his own reading, seeing the vastly different written notes besides Gaku. “Who’s notes are those?” Uzuki asks, lifting his brow questionably.

“They’re mine. I’m just putting in more effort like you wanted.” Gaku blatantly lies, moving the notes away from Uzuki’s intense gaze. He glances at Gaku then down to the papers, then back up to Gaku again, but chooses to drop the subject. Checking the time, he at last shuts his book.

“I think that’s enough studying for one day. Are you ready to go?” Uzuki asks, collecting his belongings. As soon as he spoke, so did Gaku’s hungry stomach. Lightly snickering, Uzuki rises from his chair, “I’ll take that as a yes.”

By the time they were leaving, the sun was now setting in the horizon, orange and pink hues streaking the evening sky. The slight bite of coldness ran through their bodies as they walked side by side out of the campus ground.

“Where are we going?” Gaku questions as they enter the city.

“I heard a new crepe shop opened up near campus. I wanted to check out.” Uzuki replies coolly, continuing down the street. Bummed it wasn’t going to be something more heavy, Gaku sulks. Crepes weren’t bad but there were plenty of other shops doing the same gimmick. Gaku prayed it would at least be subpar with a good portion size. There was only so much complaining one could have when they weren’t the one paying.

They continue for another few blocks until Uzuki points out a shop tucked in the corner of the line of businesses. It was a simple crepe shop, just an ordering window and a few outdoor tables set up for patrons to eat at. It didn’t seem convincing of a good place to eat at first glance, but there were quite a few people already lined up to order.

As they got closer, a heavenly scent of freshly cooked batter wafted through the air, teasing their noses to come try. The menu wasn’t overly complex, offering a good variety of sweet and savory crepes. Gaku had a love of any type of food, and even though the fruit filled ones in other peoples hands looked delicious, he was far too hungry for just sliced strawberries.

The closer they got to the counter, the more famished he felt.

“What do you want?” The cashier asks crassly behind the window, his demeanor rather skittish, sweating like someone was after him. The two look at him with concern. Gaku takes a peek behind the strange man to see if someone was really holding him hostage. Nothing out of the ordinary besides shelves of products, and tucked in the corner stood a man with a head of wavy hair pouring batter onto a hot griddle, the very head Gaku had been searching for.

Gaku blinks a few times, unsure if it's really the right person. They wore a mask covering most of their face, but when they turned towards the counter Gaku could clearly see those distinct birthmarks under steel blue eyes. Seba’s eyes.

After a month of absolutely nothing, there he was. Wearing a pink apron. Making crepes.

Freezing on the spot, Uzuki nudges his shoulder, snapping Gaku back to the present. “Sorry, could I get the ham and swiss one?” Gaku mutters, still looking past the cashier. Seba hadn’t seemed to notice him, busy preparing customer orders. Uzuki places his own order for a tiramisu crepe, paying the man for their order while Gaku walks away.

Taking one of the unoccupied tables, Gaku’s thoughts race. The opportunity was at his feet, yet he felt nothing but frost. Ask him for his number. Ask him to be friends. No. It felt so childish to plainly ask, but after so long without speaking, Gaku didn’t know what to do. With Kei right next to him too, he couldn’t just go ask the weird cashier to speak with Seba without raising suspicions.

Would this coincidence happen again? He knew that he worked here now, but if he kept coming back often just for the chance to talk to him again, it would be like stalking. Possible scenarios overwhelmed Gaku. The insistent threat of another missed chance screamed at Gaku that today he MUST make progress.

He needed a plan, and fast.

Immediately Uzuki takes notice of his odd behavior, his energy shifting drastically from the Gaku he’d known his entire life. “Everything okay? You look like you’re about to throw up.”

Gaku fixes the sickly expression on his face back to stoic, afraid Uzuki will somehow read the pressing thoughts currently engulfing his mind. Just before he’s about to answer, Seba steps from the side door of the shop, presumably to take a break given that he’s no longer wearing the apron.

It’s now or never.

“I’m fine, just a bit tired today.” Gaku’s eyes follow Seba’s shape, watching him disappear towards the alley behind the buildings. “I’m gonna go smoke real quick while we wait. Be right back.” Gaku was already out of his seat and going in the same direction as Seba when Uzuki’s mouth opened to ask to join him.

“Guess I’ll just wait here then.” Uzuki comments with a huff, staying seated in place at the table alone.

Rounding the corner, Seba was leaning against the wall, phone in hand and an unlit cigarette hanging in his mouth. Gaku realizes he hadn’t thought of what to say or even thought how he must look following Seba into an alley.

Seba looks up from his screen, directly locking eyes with Gaku at the corner. Thinking of turning back was no longer an option. Unable to decipher the look on Seba’s face, confusion or surprise, Gaku clenches his teeth instinctively.

Shit he probably thinks I’m creepy as hell for following him back here.

Trying to make himself less conspicuous, Gaku reaches for his pack of cigarettes in his pocket, only to realize he had put them in his bag earlier that day before classes. His stomach drops a few levels. Seba watches him scrambling and chuckles.

“Forget something?”

“Yeah.” Gaku grumbles, patting himself down in hopes that he was mistaken.

Shifting his body, he attempts to retreat from the embarrassment burning the tips of his ears. It was a terrible idea coming in hot without a solid plan.

“Here, I still owe you.”

Taking another cigarette from his jacket, Seba stretches his hand out for Gaku to come take it. Gaku lets out a small puff of a laugh, a bit more at ease that Seba wasn’t creeped out ‘running into him’ here. “Thanks.”

Seba flicks the fuse of his lighter a few times until the flame ignites. Both lean in, waiting a few seconds for the paper to catch fire. Gaku keeps his eyes fixated on the cigarette. On the other end, Seba sneaks an unnoticed glimpse of blazing crimson reflecting the small fire.

They stand together in the quiet alley, minutes ticking by, the cigarette becoming shorter by each inhale. Seba doesn’t speak, letting the ball linger in Gaku’s court.

It frustrated Gaku to no end that he was stressing so hard over asking an easy question and why cared so much about the outcome. Since when was befriending someone more difficult than getting laid? It wasn’t Gaku’s style to overthink, yet that’s all he was doing in the present moment.

“So, you make crepes?” Gaku asks, staring at the wall on the opposite end.

Seba looks over to Gaku, “Yup. Paychecks a paycheck.”

“Is it hard?”

“Not as hard as I thought it was going to be, but Tanaka sucks at it.” Seba scoffs.

“Is that that guy working the register? What’s his deal?”

“Yeah that’s him. We were co-workers at the warehouse. After the .. incident.. We were both out of a job. Told him he should open up a crepe shop. He actually did and then begged me to help him out.” Seba pauses for a second, “He’s not exactly the brightest person.”

Gaku hums in response. Well, that makes a lot of sense, kinda. The conversation comes to another pause without asking the most pressing question. He battles his own pride, trying to find the right words to say.

A timer loudly rings from Seba’s phone indicating the end of his break right then. Heavily sighing, Seba stomps out his cigarette on the ground.

“Well, I gotta get back to work.” Seba pushes off the wall, heading back towards the front without hesitation.

Gaku stays in place, letting him slip away once again. The chance came and passed right in front of his eyes. The words he wanted to ask stuck to his tongue like glue. He clenches his jaw tightly.

Coward.

Gaku sulks back to the table where Uzuki is still patiently waiting for their food, scrolling on his phone. Plopping down into the hard seat, Gaku rests his head on his hands, annoyed by his own hesitation. He didn’t know how long he’d be waiting just for another chance to say nothing and get nowhere again.

Uzuki doesn’t comment on his sudden moodswing, only giving him a single lookover. They sit there in a dense silence when their order is called a few minutes later. Gaku doesn’t miss a beat and gets back up to grab their crepes from the counter before Uzuki can.

Tanaka hands over the two fresh crepes, and behind him, Seba also hands something to Gaku. A folded piece of paper. Gaku eyes Seba, carefully taking it from him. Neither said anything in the exchange, but the other man felt caught in something private that didn’t involve him in the slightest.

Walking the few steps back to their table, Gaku’s chest pounds hard.

He hands his brother the sweet crepe, sitting next him with his own. “Oh wow! This looks incredible!” Uzuki comments, taking the large crepe from his hands. Uzuki digs in, giving a pleasant hum of approval to the delicate flavors.

Gaku stares at his own intensely, the gnawing hunger now replaced with a filling dread. What was on the piece of paper? Was Seba going to tell him to leave him alone, or tell him he’s weird. Gaku couldn’t stand waiting to find out. Under the table with clammy hands, he carefully unfolds it.

XXX-XXX-XXXX
-SEBA

It was the last thing Gaku had expected to receive today. Seba’s phone number. Gaku looks up from the note quickly and over to the open window. No one there. A subtle curl forms on the side of Gaku’s lips.

Now able to relax again, Gaku takes a bite from the warm crepe, the flavors balancing perfectly on his tongue. Something so simple tasted like a 5 star restaurant in his mouth, making his eyes sparkle and stomach sing with joy. Seba was quite a skilled crepe maker.

He’ll surely be stopping by again.

Back in the solitude of his dorm, yet another problem arises. What on earth should he text to Seba now that he had his number. He didn’t want to seem desperate and text right away, but didn’t want to wait so long that it would seem ingenuine. Typing and deleting lines of text over and over again, Gaku at last forces himself to send a text without thinking too much over it.

UNKNOWN NUMBER [20:32 PM]

-Hey.

UNKNOWN NUMBER [20:34 PM]

-It’s Gaku.

Gaku throws his phone on the bed like it’s a ticking bomb, unwilling to desperately wait for Seba to text him back. Getting on his PC, Gaku loads up his last saved file in Resident Evil to alleviate the restlessness, ultimately getting sidetracked by the addictive game. It wasn’t until he got stuck on a puzzle that he remembered to check his phone again.

SEBA [21:50PM]

-Oh hey. Sorry, I just got off work.

GAKU [22:07PM]

-No problem.

Gaku bit his lip, taking a shot in the dark.

GAKU [22:08PM]

-Do you have anything going on this week?

SEBA [22:17PM]

-Actually, one of my friends Lu got the new Switch 2. We’re gonna test out the new Mario Kart on Friday.

SEBA [22:18PM]

-We need another player, if you want to come.

GAKU [22:25PM]

-Sure.

SEBA [22:30PM]

-Cool.

Gaku sat reading the invite over again. Finally, something new happening in his mundane life.

Notes:

Subtle or not lol but I think it’s funny when a person clearly wants to text someone but doesn’t want to reply too fast so they wait like 10 minutes before texting back to seem like they dgaf 😂 it’s the little things
