Chapter 1: First meeting

Chapter Text

Chapter 1: Licorice Cookie POV
.......

“Those stupid accursed cookies! Gingerbrave and- and those other ones! They’re just children! Why can't I defeat them?! GAHHH!” Licorice Cookie exclaimed in dismay. His words breaking through the silence of night, only to fall on the deaf ears of the universe. “Ugh. Maybe everyone was right. I am a failure.” Licorice Cookie sighed and buried his head in his hands.
“Hello?” An unfamiliar, but kind and gentle voice spoke from the dark forest. The cookie stepped closer and Licorice Cookie was able to make out his form just barely with aid from the moonlight. He pulled his scythe closer to him so it was ready at a moment's notice. The stranger sat beside Licorice Cookie, setting down beside him a small, abnormally shaped guitar- or- no it was a lute! An abnormally shaped lute. “You sound quite troubled, friend. What seems to be bothering you at this late hour?”
“I- Ah- Nothing that concerns you, strange cookie of the woods!”
The other cookie chuckled warmly. “You’re quite funny. My name is Clover Cookie. What is yours?”
Licorice Cookie mumbled quietly to himself. He wanted to stew in misery by his lonesome. There was no need for this, admittedly kind, stranger to barge in and mess up his already atrocious day. Although, he supposed there was no harm in introducing himself. “My name is Licorice Cookie.”
“How nice! Now then, Licorice Cookie, what has got you brooding in darkness this lovely evening?”
Just great, he wasn't going to be easy to shake off was he? “Well if you must know, I ah- had a bit of a uhm- set back at work today.”
“Oh dear, that does sound quite troubling indeed. I’m sorry that happened to you Licorice cookie.”
“And- and now- uh- my coworker is going to reprimand me as if she's just sooooooo much better than me with her stupid holier-than-thou attitude! As if she would be able to do a better job… I’d like to see her try… GAH I just hate her so much!”
Clover Cookie placed a hand on Licorice’s shoulder. “I’m sure it will get better, my friend.”
Licorice Cookie froze at the strangers touch. When was the last time he’d been treated with such- care? It felt… weird. Licorice Cookie brushed off Clover Cookie’s hand. “Hands off the robes! I don’t need your pity.”
Clover Cookie took his hand back and nodded subtly. “Very well then. I apologize if I crossed a boundary.”
“It’s fine,” Licorice Cookie huffed. In the name of all that is sugary and sweet did this cookie have to be so NICE? It made him feel sick to his stomach.
“Licorice Cookieeeeee?!” A small, dazed sounding voice called out from the woods. Poison Mushroom Cookie! They must be searching for him. He did say he only needed a short moment to himself
Licorice cookie stood up and grabbed his scythe. “Well, I guess that’s my cue to leave.”
Clover Cookie sighed sadly, “I see... May fate let our paths cross once more.”
“Er, sure. Whatever,” Licorice Cookie said, walking away slowly. What an odd cookie…
“Licorice Cookieeeee!” Poison Mushroom Cookie said with glee upon reuniting with him. “You sure were gone for a loooong time…”
Licorice cookie patted them on the head. “I apologize, Poison Mushroom Cookie. I got a bit uh, caught up in something.”
Poison Mushroom Cookie grabbed onto Licorice cookies free hand, “Can we go home nowwww? I’m tiredddddd.”
“Yes, let’s.”

Chapter 2: Licorice Cookie POV
......
“Ugh, We’ve been walking in circles for foreverrrrr.” Licorice Cookie grumbled.
“You want a shroomieeeee? It’ll make you feel a lot betterrrr,” Poison mushroom cookie said from on top of Licorice Cookie’s shoulders.
“You ask me one more time and I’m making you walk all by yourself.”
Poison Mushroom Cookie frowned, “You’re no funnnnn.”
As they continued their journey bumbling through the woods, a pleasant melody began to play. Licorice Cookie began humming along as the sound seemed to get closer and closer. Until of course he saw the source of the song. It was that cookie again, Clover Cookie, he remembered. That hat was far too pointy for him to forget. He was sitting on a stump, playing in a clearing. All the little critters gathered around him and listened to the enchanting music. Licorice Cookie tried, and failed to shuffle away discreetly, tripping on a rock and falling over.
Suddenly the music stopped as Clover Cookie got up to help the two fallen Cookies. “Are you two alright?” He asked, extending a helping hand.
Licorice Cookie declined the help, standing up by himself instead. He dusted himself off and huffed, “We are just fine. Leave us be! Go back to serenading wildlife or what have you! B-begone!”
Clover Cookie smiled, ignoring his demands, “Oh, I recognize you! Licorice Cookie, was it? Who’s this little purple guy you have with you?”
The small cookie smiled drowsily, “My name is Poiiiiiison Mushroom Coooookieee.”
“It’s very nice to meet you Poison Mushroom Cookie. I am Clover Cookie.”
“Clooover Coooookie… Hehehe, want a shroomie?” Poison Mushroom Cookie said, materializing a small purple mushroom from seemingly out of nowhere.
Clover Cookie shook his head and smiled, “I’m afraid I’ll have to decline, don't want to spoil my appetite for lunch, you know?”
Poison Mushroom Cookie sighed sadly but nodded.
Clover Cookie clapped his hands together and looked back to Licorice Cookie. “Now, where are you two headed?”
“It’s none of your business! Poison Mushroom Cookie let’s go!” Licorice Cookie turned dramatically, holding his hand out for the little one to take hold of; but he didn’t. “C’mon!”
“Can’t we take a breakkkkkk? We’ve been walking foreverrrr.”
“You haven’t taken a single step this whole time! You have no right to complain!”
“But we’re losttttt… howwwwww are we even gonna get thereeeeeee?”
“Lost?” Clover Cookie interjected, “I can help you all find your way!”
Licorice Cookie frowned. He just wouldn’t let up… “I guess a little bit of guidance wouldn't hurt…”
“Splendid! Shall we be off? Or I suppose a break was in order, yes?”
“Ughh, Fine!” Licorice cookie resigned to his fate. He knew it was no use arguing.
Clover Cookie took back his position on the stump and picked his lute up. Poison Mushroom Cookie sat right next to him, and Licorice cookie sat on the grass with his back against a tree. He crossed his arms and in general made an effort to look displeased with the situation, even though he did have to admit his legs needed a good rest. With a scowl planted firmly on his face he watched as they smiled and talked.. That Clover Cookie was annoyingly friendly. Just like all those other insolent cookies that stood in his path to executing Dark Enchantress Cookie’s plans. Well, maybe he wasn't just like them. His voice wasn’t nearly as grating. It was quite nice if Licorice Cookie was being perfectly honest with himself. His face wasn't nearly as punchable either. It was nearly the opposite. Nearly.
He suddenly felt a tiny tug on his robes. “Licorice cooooookieeee, what are you staring attttttt?” Poison Mushroom Cookie asked, a box in their other hand. He wasn't even sure when the little cookie had gotten so close. He could have sworn they were with Clover Cookie only a moment ago. He must have been lost in thought for quite some time, or maybe Poison Mushroom cookie had finally learned to be discrete. The latter was doubtful.
Licorice Cookie shook his head, “I’m not staring at anything. What uhm- what’s in the box?”
“Clover Cookie saaaaaid we could split hiiiiis lunch!”
Licorice Cookie looked up at this stupid good samaritan of a cookie. Clover Cookie looked back at him and smiled. Curses! Why was he so- so- Licorice Cookie didn’t even know how to describe him. He took half of the sandwich that was in the box and ate it, trying to seem as if he wasn’t grateful; like this gesture was somehow an inconvenience to him. But Clover Cookie just smiled and laughed quietly to himself, completely unbothered by his facade. It almost felt as if he found it amusing.
They finished eating and finally set off to their destination. Poison Mushroom Cookie hitched a ride with Clover Cookie instead. It was a little odd that they got acquainted so quickly, but it saved Licorice Cookie’s back some trouble so he accepted it. He looked over at the two of them as Clover Cookie led them through the forest. The warm sunlight always seemed to hit him in just the right way, highlighting his silky white hair and his gentle smile and his stupid crystal blue eyes. It had to be sorcery of some sort. Some distraction spell or- or something like that. Whatever it was, it was driving him mad.
“Well, this is your stop, travelers! May luck follow you in your adventures today!” Clover Cookie said as they arrived at their destination.
“Yes, well uhm,” Licorice Cookie cleared his throat, “Thank you, Clover Cookie… even though we could have done it ourselves, I do appreciate the help… I guess.”
“Happy to be of service my friend. May fate bring us together once more.”
“Uh, right…”

Chapter 3: Clover Cookie POV
.........
As Clover Cookie took a sip of his tea he watched out the cafe window. It was the day a contest would take place to crown a new Hollyberry Princess. A day of great excitement to be sure, certainly enough to inspire a new ballad. That’s at least what Clover Cookie hoped. He had been in a bit of a creative rut recently. Not much came to mind to write about, well, except for that one cookie… Licorice Cookie. Their paths had only crossed twice before, but something about him piqued Clover Cookie’s interests. Perhaps it was the fact so much of his persona lay in a shroud of mystery, that standoffishness that made it seem like he was hiding something. Maybe it was the fact he was clearly trying so hard to maintain that facade that amused Clover Cookie. Maybe it's just because he was cute. Either way Licorice Cookie had been- wait- was that him just now? Yes! There he was, right outside the window. Along with Poison Mushroom Cookie, and two others he was yet to meet. A chocolate werehound in a particularly elegant (though also uncomfortable) looking purple dress, and some sort of half cat, half bat creature. Clover Cookie promptly finished his tea and went out to greet them.
As he crept up behind the party they had just wrapped up a conversation with another band of familiar faces, “You know Gingerbrave?” Clover Cookie asked, now even more intrigued.
“Unfortunately…” Licorice Cookie frowned, before realizing what was actually going on. “Waittt, it’s you again! How do you keep finding me?! Are you following me?!”
“I guess it’s merely destiny my dear friend.”
Poison Mushroom Cookie looked up and smiled, “Clover Cookieee!!!”
Clover Cookie patted them on the head, “Why hello young one! It’s a pleasure to see you again!”
“Who-” The werehound started, before clearing their throat and speaking in a much sweeter tone. One that was presumably unnatural to them, “And who might you be, sweetie?”
“I am Clover Cookie. What’s your name?”
“Oh! I am Choco Werehound Princess.”
“Goodness me, I didn’t know I was in the presence of royalty!” Clover Cookie said, taking a bow. “It’s an honor to meet you. I assume you all are in town for the competition then?”
“You’d assume correctly,” Licorice Cookie said, “Choco Werehound Princess is going to CRUSH the competition and become the new Hollyberry princess!!!”
“I wish you luck, then. Now, if I’m not mistaken, the festivities are about to begin. You should start heading down there. I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines.”
“Oh, uhm, yes! As you should!” Licorice Cookie nodded, seemingly caught off guard from receiving support in their endeavors.
Clover Cookie smiled at them as they walked away. He then took up his place in the crowd, watching as Choco Werehound Princess, Licorice Cookie, Poison Mushroom Cookie, and the creature Clover Cookie learned was fittingly named “Batcat”, made their way through the competition alongside the other contestants... Until they were disqualified for attacking the other contestants that is… In all fairness they did deserve to be reprimanded for their poor sportsmanship… Violence was just maybe not the best option.
Clover Cookie met them on their way out of the castle. He figured he had seen enough of this competition, and it’d be more interesting to follow them. “Hello friends! I saw what happened… You had a good run though!” Clover cookie patted Choco Werehound Princess on the arm, “I’m sorry you were treated poorly by the other contestants. You are just as lovely as any other princess.”
“We don't need your pity!” Licorice cookie said, crossing his arms. “And-and stop calling me your friend, I don’t know you!”
“It’s not pity, I just-” Clover Cookie did not get to finish his rebuttal as a greenish-red dragon stormed the castle at that very moment. Clover Cookie hesitated for a second, debating whether or not to stay for what would no doubt be a tale worth telling, or if he should get himself and his acquaintances to safety. He chose the latter. While the rest of them were stunned by the sudden turn of events, Clover Cookie attempted to work quickly. He picked up Poison Mushroom Cookie and grabbed Licorice Cookie’s left hand. “We should go, my friends!”
They all nodded and hastily followed Clover Cookie out of the kingdom. As soon as they determined they were a safe distance away they all took a second to catch their breaths and take a deep sigh of relief. “That was certainly a close one!” Clover Cookie stated. As he had started to calm down and was able to process information more clearly, he realized he was still holding onto Licorice Cookie’s hand. His dough was very cold and a little dry, but it fit just so perfectly into Clover Cookie’s. It seemed as if Licorice Cookie had conducted a similar observation as he yanked his hand away and wiped it on his cloak.
“Ahem,” Licorice cookie cleared his throat, “Thank you for your uh, help, Clover Cookie. Again. We’ll be off now.”
“So soon? I mean uhm- well, good luck on your travels then. Stay safe.”
Licorice Cookie nodded quickly and started making his escape with his other companions and disappeared once more. As they faded from view, Clover Cookie wondered when they’d see each other again, and hoped that it would be soon.

Chapter 4: Thinking...

Chapter Text

Chapter 4: Licorice Cookie POV
.......

When Licorice Cookie and company arrived back in the Crimson Badlands, he retreated to his quarters, half out of shame for failing in the princess competition and half to contemplate that certain other cookie. He flopped onto his bed and sighed. He looked at his hand, the one Clover Cookie had held just a few hours ago. It still smelled faintly like him. A mix of fresh cut grass and vanilla. Wait- why was he even thinking about this?! He didn't care about this stranger at all, least of all what he had smelled like. What he should be worried about is the fact he had disappointed Dark Enchantress Cookie yet again. And yet, that green clad idiot was all he could think about. Who was he? What did he want?
“Er- Meowster- Are you alright?” Batcat said, cracking Licorice Cookie’s door open just a smidge.
“I'm fine, just thinking…” Licorice Cookie grumbled.
Batcat walked over to him and chambered up onto the bed, “I'm sorry we failed you today… I paw-mise we'll do better next time!”
“That's not what’s troubling me- well- no it is, but not the main thing.”
“What’s the matter, Meowster?”
Licorice Cookie started petting Batcat's head as he ranted, “That damned Clover Cookie! He somehow manages to be everywhere I go! He's so insistent on being my “friend” and being all good to everyone! He's kind to me- and- and helpful and he's not even getting anything from it! What sort of tricks does he have up his sleeve I wonder…”
“I-”
“And it's not even just that he's physically everywhere, he's like- lodged in my brain! I've been thinking about him ever since we met! His stupid beautiful hair and eyes and voice and his soft warm hands and- UGH he's the worst! What did he do to me?! It must be a spell of some sort but why!? What could he possibly gain from all this?!”
“Meowster… Nyat to suggest something so completely outlandish but it sounds like- uhm- meowby you just… like him?”
Licorice Cookie froze for a second, completely caught off guard from the preposterous accusation. He crossed his arms and huffed, “Outlandish is right! How completely unthinkable! What has gotten into you?”
“S-sorry, Meowster. I was just trying to be of service..”
“It's alright. Not everyone can be as reasonable as I am.”
“Er- uhm- Do you hear that? I think I'm being summoned elsewhere! Farewell, Meowster!” Batcat said, hastily scrambling his way out.
Licorice cookie traced the palm of his left hand as he pondered. What a stupid thought…

Chapter 5: Suspicious Cookie

Chapter 5: Clover Cookie POV
........
Clover Cookie hummed quietly to himself at the juice bar as he waited for his friend Herb Cookie. He watched as his fellow Cookie walked through the door. “Greetings, Herb Cookie!” He waved, beckoning him over to sit.
“Hello Clover Cookie!” Herb Cookie smiled, taking his seat. They ordered a round of juice from Sparkling Cookie and then proceeded to chat. “How have you been? I haven’t seen you since you set off for the Holly Berry Kingdom. The plants have missed your music. I have too.”
“I’ve been simply wonderful, my friend. Though, I have missed you dearly as well.”
“Did you find the inspiration you were looking for?”
“It was very eventful! Though I will have to keep that story in my pocket for later. I'm still suffering from writer’s block. I guess my attention has just been focused elsewhere as of late.”
“Oh?”
“Oh dear, I've said too much.”
“What's been on your mind, Clover Cookie?” Herb Cookie smiled, intrigued.
“Oh nothing, nothing,” Clover Cookie said, sipping his juice, attempting to dodge the question.
“C’monnnnn, I'm your best friend aren't I? What could possibly be so embarrassing that you can't tell me?”
Clover Cookie sighed, “There's just a certain Cookie I met recently I'd like to get to know more.”
“Really now?”
“It's quite an unfortunate situation I fear. I know almost nothing about him. We've only met about 3 times on very short occasions. And all of those meetings have been by pure luck. I think he's getting annoyed that I keep popping up everywhere. It's a shame because I truly desire to know his story… Perhaps be a part of it…”
“Oohoohoo! You like him don't you?”
Clover Cookie chugged the rest of his juice, “It's late, we should get going. I'm a bit weary from my travels.”
Herb Cookie shook his head and smiled, “Fine, fine. I won't bug you about it anymore.” Clover Cookie got up and was about to leave, but Herb Cookie held him back. “Hey uh, let me walk you home, okay?”
“I only had one drink, I'm not that much of a lightweight, Herb Cookie.”
“No it's not that,” He subtly pointed to the window behind them, “Don’t look, but here's a suspicious cookie outside who's been looking at you. I think it's best if we stick together.”
Clover Cookie turned his head, disregarding his friend's instructions. He saw a hooded figure nervously peering inside the window. He couldn't make out their face but the robes looked familiar. Of course it was still hard to tell, it was very dark outside. They bolted as soon as they realized they'd been seen. Clover Cookie gently grabbed Herb Cookie's shoulder, “Yes, let's go together.” They made their way to Clover Cookie’s home, a humble old cottage in the woods.
“Do you think we lost that guy?” Herb Cookie said, a bit worried, “I can stay the night if you'd feel safer.”
Clover Cookie dismissed his proposal, “Ah, I'll be just fine. I can hold my own. Besides, your plants need you.”
“Alright, goodnight then.”
“Goodnight dear friend!” Clover Cookie waved goodbye as his friend reluctantly walked home. As soon as Herb Cookie walked out of sight, all was silent, beside the soothing repetitive sound of his finger tapping away on his arm. That was until Clover Cookie heard footsteps from behind him. He turned around and saw that hooded figure from the juice bar. This couldn't be good.
“Hello Clover Cookie,” The figure said- nervously? “Ugh this stupid thing always falls in my face,” The stranger grumbled, pulling back his hood just enough so Clover Cookie could see his face. Relief immediately washed over him.
Clover Cookie took the other cookie's hands in his, “Licorice Cookie! It's you! By the 5, you gave me quite the scare!”
Licorice Cookie looked down, “I uh- yes- sorry about that…”
“Why didn't you just come in and say hi? I would have been more than happy to introduce you to Herb Cookie! In fact, I was just talking about you to him.”
“Talking about me?” Licorice Cookie repeated quietly, before switching up his act. He crossed his arms and lifted his head arrogantly, “Of- of course you were. I'm great!” He looked back to Clover Cookie, “What um, what were you saying?”
“Only that it's a shame I don't know more about you.”
“Oh! Well duh, obviously. It'd be any cookies's highest honor to be my acquaintance.”
Clover Cookie shook his head and laughed softly. “Would you like to come inside? I could make us some tea.”
“I suppose I could spare some of my precious time to grace you with my presence.”
“Wonderful!”
The two walked inside the cottage. It looked exactly the way he had left it before he had set off for the Hollyberry Kingdom, with the addition of some dust.
“It's pretty empty in here,” Licorice Cookie remarked, taking a seat at the table.
Clover Cookie nodded as he put a kettle on for them, “Ah yes, I travel a lot so there's not much need for many extras. That and my lifestyle doesn't account for much frivolous spending.”
“I see.”
“How have you been, friend?”
“I've been fine I guess. My master still isn't very happy with me for losing the competition though.”
“I'm sorry to hear that. You five did a fine job. The violence was a bit uncalled for, but I understand.”
“Yeah sure, whatever… Hey- what um, what's your relationship with that other cookie you were with?”
“Herb Cookie? He's my best friend, why do you ask?”
“No reason, no reason. Just curious.”
The kettle started to whistle and Clover Cookie poured Them both a cup of tea. He sat next to Licorice Cookie and took a deep breath in, “This is nice.”
“Hm?”
“Sharing a soothing cup of tea with a friend in my own home. It's nice. I've needed something like this for a while.”
“It is pretty nice. I guess.”
They sat in a somewhat awkward silence for a moment as they drank their tea. Clover Cookie was the first to break the silence, “So, how'd you find me?”
“I uhm- I asked Batcat to track you down… I wanted to give you this letter…” Licorice cookie said, producing a black envelope from his robe.
Clover Cookie snatched it enthusiastically. “Aww! How sweet!”
“It's not sweet! It's nothing really. I just- eugh I don't know- I thought I should formally thank you for your help.”
“May I read it?”
“No! No, it can wait.” Licorice cookie stood up hastily, “I should go. Poison Mushroom Cookie is probably wondering where I am.”
Clover Cookie frowned, “Do you have to?”
Licorice Cookie looked a bit taken aback. “You want me here?”
“Why wouldn't I?”
“I- well usually- no- you're right! Why wouldn't you?”
“Exactly. Now, would you like to join me on the couch? It's much more comfortable.”
Licorice Cookie nodded silently. They moved to the couch, Licorice Cookie made sure to sit on the opposite end from Clover Cookie, trying to seem nonchalant. Clover Cookie in turn just scooted closer.
“So, tell me more about this job of yours. Sounds interesting,” Clover Cookie asked, crumbling to know more about him, but trying not to pry too deep too fast.
Licorice Cookie hesitated before speaking, “I'm not really supposed to, but I guess if you really wanted to hear I could spare a few details.”
“Then please, go on.”
Licorice Cookie started talking about his job, eventually devolving into a frustrated rant. Clover Cookie soon found himself asleep, his head laid on the other cookie's shoulder. Not because he had gotten bored or even that he was particularly tired. Despite all the energy radiating from Licorice Cookie at that moment, he made Clover Cookie feel at peace. He wasn't sure what exactly it was, but Licorice Cookie's presence just felt right.

Chapter 6: Secrets

Chapter Text

Chapter 6: Licorice Cookie POV

Licorice cookie froze as he felt Clover Cookie’s head hit his shoulder. Aw gumdrops, he had fallen asleep… What was Licorice Cookie to do now? He did have to get going before the other cookies of darkness discovered he had disappeared. Especially since they were supposed to set off for the Dark Cacao kingdom in the morning. A mission he finally had a super important role in. But on the other hand Clover Cookie looked so beautiful and peaceful, it'd be a crime to wake him up.
Ew! What was he even saying?! He had to get out of here. Licorice Cookie attempted to nudge Clover Cookie’s head off his shoulder, but that only resulted in him snuggling in closer.
“Ugh, do you have to make this so difficult?” Licorice Cookie grumbled. Just like every interaction they'd had thus far, he was not going to get away easy. And maybe he didn't want to. Maybe this time he wanted to stick around just a little longer and enjoy the moment. Eugh, how corny. Licorice Cookie sighed and wrapped his arm around Clover Cookie's shoulder.
“If I get in trouble with Dark Enchantress Cookie, I'm blaming you.” Licorice Cookie rested his head on top of Clover Cookie's and closed his eyes. The warmth the other cookie gave off made him feel drowsy and safe, like a heavy blanket. How nauseating, and yet how wonderful. Licorice Cookie hadn't had this much physical closeness to another Cookie like this for, well, forever. Licorice Cookie tightened his hold on Clover Cookie and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning Licorice Cookie woke up to the sound of soft, near silent singing and the scent of coffee.
“You're awake!” Clover Cookie smiled from his seat at the table. “Good morning Licorice Cookie!”
“Good morning,” Licorice Cookie yawned.“What time is it?”
“Hmmm, perhaps just after 9am ish? I'm not sure, my clock stopped working ages ago.”
Licorice Cookie was now wide awake “Crumbs! I was supposed to set off with the other cookies of- I mean my- my co-workers for a work trip earlier this morning! My master is gonna kill me!”
“Oh dear! I do apologize, I feel as if this is my fault.”
“No, no you're fine. I could have left…”
“Yes, I suppose you're right… Still, is there anything I can do?”
“Ugh, no. They'll track me down sooner or later and we'll be on our way. I'll get yelled at, but that's nothing new.”
Clover Cookie looked down with guilt, “I'm sorry.” Ouch. That tugged at Licorice Cookie’s heart strings more than he'd cared to admit.
He got up and frantically attempted to comfort Clover Cookie, “It's fine! Seriously, don't worry! I'm such a screw up all the time anyway it really doesn't make a difference!”
Clover Cookie got up and cupped Licorice Cookie’s face in his hands, “Don't say that about yourself.”
Licorice Cookie's eyes widened in shock. He knew he should probably pull away and resist all of- whatever this was, but all he really wanted to do was melt into Clover Cookie's hands like warm butter and never leave. Instead of either of those options he stood there awkwardly, stiff as a board. Clover Cookie smiled warmly, brushing some of the hair out of Licorice Cookie's face. He opened his mouth to say something, but was interrupted by a scratching at the door.
“It seems we have a visitor!” Clover Cookie said, wiping his hands on his skirt and heading to the door. On the other side was a small cakehound. “Ohhh! How cute!” He squealed, scooping the animal up in his arms. “What are you doing here little one?”
As the creature started licking Clover Cookie's face, Licorice Cookie's heart dropped. He knew that cakehound. Chiffon. If he was here Red Velvet cookie was no doubt close behind. He did not want Clover Cookie to be subjected to this whole mess. Licorice Cookie quickly scrambled to get outside, “I should really get going! Thank you for your hospitality!”
“Not so fast,” a familiar voice said from behind him. Licorice Cookie reluctantly turned around to face Red Velvet Cookie. Along with him was Dark Choco Cookie. Curses. He had been caught.
Clover Cookie looked at the two new cookies with surprise, but greeted them with the same cordial attitude as he treated any other cookie, “And who might you two be? Friends of Licorice Cookie perhaps?”
“Friends is a strong word,” Dark Choco Cookie stated.
The cakehound jumped from Clover Cookie's arms back to Red Velvet Cookie. Red Velvet Cookie picked him up,“Good job, Chiffon. You've done well soldier.”
“Awwww! Chiffon?! What an adorable name! Is he yours?” Clover Cookie gushed.
The two new cookies looked over at Licorice Cookie, confused. He just shrugged.
Red Velvet Cookie turned back to Clover Cookie, “I- yes? Are you not the least bit frightened by us?”
“Should I be?”
Red Velvet Cookie looked down at Chiffon all cuddled up in his arms, “I suppose I'm just used to people viewing cake hounds in a much different light…”
“Why would I think that? Cake hounds deserve just as much love as any other creature! I mean just look how darling your little baby Chiffon is!”
“He is very darling,” Red Velvet Cookie cleared his throat, “Back to the matter at hand! Licorice Cookie, you're to come back with us immediately. Dark Enchantress Cookie is not pleased with your little disappearing act.”
“Dark Enchantress Cookie?” Clover Cookie said, turning to Licorice Cookie, concerned and confused.
Licorice Cookie frantically racked his brain for a way to cover this up,“He means my boss! We- call her that because she's just as unpleasant as she is, haHaAhAHA! Isn't that right?”
Dark Choco Cookie and Red Velvet Cookie looked at him VERY puzzled. “No we-” Red Velvet Cookie started, before being stopped by Dark Choco Cookie’s hand on his shoulder. He seemed to have caught on somewhat to what was going on. “I mean uhm, yes. Yes we do. Now we really should get going, these two are already far behind schedule on their expedition.”
Clover Cookie sighed, disappointed, “Right… Sorry for keeping him too long.”
Red Velvet Cookie shook his head, “It's quite alright, green one. Now Licorice Cookie, let’s be off.”
Licorice Cookie nodded and walked over to the two. As soon as they turned their backs and started walking off, Licorice Cookie silently summoned one of his Licorice Servants. He handed it to Clover Cookie and whispered, “Write me,” before darting off to follow his coworkers.
Clover Cookie looked at the peculiar little Licorice swirl shaped homunculi that had been left in his hands. “What an interesting cookie.”
As Licorice Cookie and company Awkwardly walked through the forest to meet back up with Pomegranate and Poison Mushroom Cookie, he felt a sense of dread settle over him. Fearing one of them would ask what he'd been up to.
“So, what was that about?” Dark Choco Cookie asked. There it was.
Licorice Cookie shook his head. “I don't want to talk about it.”
“Are you… and him…?”
“No! No I'd never-”
“Well, regardless of the nature of your relationship with that Cookie, Chiffon and I approve,” Red Velvet Cookie interjected, “Just don't go disappearing in the middle of the night again or you'll make the others suspicious.”
“There's no relationship or nature thereof to approve! It was strictly a business exchange that happened to run a little too long! Okay?! Can we stop talking about this?!” Licorice Cookie said, desperately trying to move on.
“Sure…”
“Stop it! I don't- Augh! I don't like him!!!”
Red Velvet Cookie smiled, “No one accused you of that. Telling on yourself now, are you?”
Licorice Cookie found himself getting extremely flustered, “You insinuated it! You- you- ugh! Curses be upon you! Curses I say!” He crossed his arms and clenched his jaw as they kept moving along. He was in for a long trip.

Chapter 7: Entering the Dark Cacao Kingdom

Notes:

I gave Licorice Cookie a backstory that is not so subtly hinted at here, canonically it's a bit iffy, but hey, if they're not gonna give me Licorice Cookie lore I'm gonna make it myself. Bigger expo dump on that in like 2 chapters so be warned.

Chapter 7: Licorice Cookie POV
......

Cold. Bitter, numbing, oh so familiar, cold embraced Licorice Cookie and his friends as they rode through the Dark Cacao kingdom. This old carriage was much better than walking, but it was a bit cramped with the four of them. It didn't smell great either. It almost made him miss Clover Cookie. His warmth would make this so much more tolerable. Enjoyable even. He could picture it now, Clover Cookie's arms wrapped around him, his sweet and gentle scent enveloping them both. His soothing voice singing over the harsh whistle of the wind and rattling of the old wheels. Speaking of Clover Cookie, Licorice Cookie wondered if he had read his letter yet. Did he like it? Did he find it cheesy? Did he think it was stupid? Was he going to write back like Licorice Cookie had asked? Could his magic keep his minion alive long enough to even deliver a letter?
No! No, he had to stop thinking like this. It was only going to get in his way. He had to do something important for this mission. For Dark Enchantress Cookie. Even though he didn't really want to, considering how bad everything went before. Though he guessed the pain and destruction was desirable this time. He shook his head. Maybe it was better to just stop thinking altogether. It was still a long way to the black citadel, and he couldn't waste his energy reminiscing. He was going to make Dark Enchantress Cookie proud of him and that was that. No feelings about cookies or Licorice Sea monsters were going to get in his way.
Licorice Cookie sighed and looked out the window. Oh how perfect, how really funny. The universe had to be playing a cruel joke on him. Of course as soon as he had convinced himself to stop thinking about it, here, laid out right in front of him, were the ruins of his old village.
“Is that your old home, Licorice Cookie?” Pomegranate Cookie asked, though she already knew the answer.
Licorice Cookie kept his eyes fixed on the remains of his old town, “It was never a home, but yes I did live there.”
“Woahhhh! Reallyyyyy?” Poison Mushroom Cookie said, crawling into Licorice Cookie’s lap in order to see out the window.
“Wa- hey! Get off of me!”
Poison Mushroom Cookie looked out the window for a moment, then back up at him, “What happeneddddd?”
Licorice Cookie paused, contemplating the best way to say this, or if to say anything at all. “A monster attacked us. Destroyed everything. It was a shabby town to begin with, but now it's completely in ruins, tsk.”
Poison Mushroom Cookie frowned, “Awww that's sadddd.” They pulled a small purple mushroom out of their pocket, “Shroomie?”
Licorice Cookie rolled his eyes, “No, Poison Mushroom Cookie. I don't want one right now.” They looked up sadly, their tired eyes all big and wet. “Stop looking at me like that!” They did not listen. Licorice Cookie sighed and opened his arms, offering a hug, which Poison Mushroom Cookie immediately fell into. “Sorry.”
They sniffled, “It's okay.” Poison Mushroom Cookie stayed warmly snuggled in Licorice Cookie’s arm's the rest of the way to the citadel.

Chapter 8: Licorice Sea Shenanigans

Notes:

This chapter is pretty much just the "Dark Creatures of the Depths" part of the Dark Cacao Kingdom arc with some extra stuff so 1) spoilers and 2) sorry if this is kinda lazy writing but I wanted to fit it better into the narrative + it's my favorite chapter so :p

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter 8: Licorice Cookie POV
.........
“So that's that then,” Licorice Cookie said. They had just wrapped up their scheme with Affogato Cookie or whatever his name was and now, “Time for the next step: summoning the monsters of the Licorice Sea?”
Licorice Cookie started setting up the summoning ritual. When he was done, he stood up and looked down into the murky viscous depths and frowned. “I spent years trying to get as far away as possible from this foul sea. But where have I ended up? Back here!” He spit into the pitch black Licorice waters with disgust. Then, taking in a deep breath, he closed his eyes and started muttering the incantation, adding in some extra hand gestures that weren't really necessary, but made him look cool. Or at least he hoped they did. As the spell progressed, the waters below them started to bubble and soon large creatures began to form.
“Yes… Yes…!” Licorice Cookie said gleefully, “Witness the true might of Licorice Cookie!!! Rise up, dark creatures of the depths! I summon you!!!” He raised his hands into the air, and as he did the multitude of monsters arose from the sea along with them. An amalgamation of teeth, glowing blue eyes, claws held together with licorice. The sight made Licorice Cookie's stomach churn as he remembered what had happened the last time he had conjured up this sight. He shook his head, nope! That memory was to stay firmly tucked away.
Dark Choco Cookie looked up at the intimidating creatures and nodded solemnly, “A great host of beasts… Will I finally be able to witness these forsaken walls finally crumbling?”
Poison Mushroom Cookie ran up to Licorice Cookie, looking at him with pure adoration and delight, “Woaaaaaah! Licorice Cookieee! That was- woahhh! Awesome!!”
Pomegranate Cookie stepped forward, admiring the monstrous sight before her, “It seems even you have your uses Licorice cookie.”
Licorice Cookie beamed with pride. He was not used to receiving so many compliments. Even though Pomegranate Cookie’s was a bit back handed he still felt powerful. Respected even. “HAHAHA!! With the depths of the sea I can make anything possible!” He cleared his throat, “With eh, one caveat… They'll turn to dust at sunrise…” He said nervously. He was afraid to mention that part lest the others take back their praises, but it was important.
Dark Choco Cookie stayed with his eyes fixed on the beasts, “These numbers will suffice.”
Pomegranate nodded, “The citadel will be ours before sunrise. There is no room for failure.”
Licorice Cookie smiled with delight (and relief) before instructing his creations, “Let's get this party started! Go my minions!!! Wreak Licorice havoc upon the Black Citadel!!!”
He watched in pride, and fear, as the goopy masses made their way to the walls of the citadel, tearing into the heavily enforced walls. As the walls crumbled Licorice Cookie had to look away. The familiar sight and sounds were too much to bear for him at that moment.
“The great wall is finally falling… I have looked forward to this moment,” Pomegranate Cookie smiled.
“All thanks to my powers over the Licorice Sea! Hehe!” Licorice Cookie said, claiming his due recognition, while still looking away from the destruction that was being laid out before them. “But uh, Dark Choco Cookie, what do we do next?”
“Dark Cacao Cookie's soul jam waits somewhere within the citadel. Someplace dark, deep inside I’d wager. We have to find it,” Dark Choco cookie said in that same gravely, solemn tone he said pretty much everything.
Pomegranate Cookie left that duty to Dark Choco to complete himself, and the rest of them retreated back to the carriage where it was safe, and waited. And waited some more. Ugh, how boring, Licorice Cookie thought as he looked out into the endless snow. Wait… what was that little black dot over there? It was getting closer… As it did Licorice Cookie was able to make out exactly what it was. It was one of his licorice servants, a green envelope in hand. Licorice Cookie hastily stepped out of the carriage and ran to meet his minion. He grabbed the letter and in doing so his servant turned his back to goo. It had been barely holding on this whole time. Fueled solely by its determination to fulfill its only purpose. Whatever, it was time to read Clover Cookie's letter. Or it would have been if it wasn't snatched out of his hands.
“H-hey!” Licorice Cookie exclaimed, trying to grab the envelope back.
“Licorice cookie… What is this?” Pomegranate Cookie asked, observing the letter.
“Pomegranate Cookie! Give that back!”
Pomegranate Cookie opened the sealed envelope and started reading it, scrunching up her nose in disgust. She dropped it on the ground and stamped it with her foot. Then glared at Licorice Cookie. “Who is this 'Clover Cookie’..? A friend, I take it?” She looked back at the wet crumpled note, semi buried in snow, “Perhaps more than that…”
“What?! No!!! Stop it! He is none of those things!”
“Really? He seemed to think he was… He even wrote a poem for you. How nauseating…”
“He did?” Licorice Cookie was itching to read that letter. “Well, that's weird! Because, as I clearly stated, he is nothing remotely close to a friend!”
“Licorice Cookie, I'd refrain from having interpersonal relationships with other cookies, lest you get distracted from our goals…”
“I know that! That's why I, again, don't have any!!!”
“Besides, would he still like you if he knew who you truly were?” She said, flashing her mirror ever so slightly at him.
Licorice Cookie slammed his eyes shut, “You put that accursed object away! And- And I don't care what he thinks! I barely even know him I- ”
“What would our master think of this pathetic display I wonder…”
“Do NOT tell Dark Enchantress Cookie about this!”
“I'm afraid I'm obligated to, as Dark Enchantress Cookie's loyal servant. Something you may need to work on becoming…”
“I-”
Pomegranate Cookie shook her head, turned around, and started walking, “Come along now, Dark Choco Cookie has been gone for much longer than I'm comfortable…”
Licorice Cookie gritted his teeth and muttered curses under his breath. He grabbed the now crumpled and soggy letter and stuffed it into his robes, before begrudgingly following behind Pomegranate Cookie.
.......
The cart ride home was a silent one. With Dark Choco Cookie gone and their mission failed, there was a lot to think about, but not much to say. Especially to Pomegranate Cookie…
He discreetly pulled the letter out of his sleeve and looked at it. The paper was dry now, but very crumpled. The ink had been smudged so much that most of the letter was rendered completely illegible. Stupid Pomegranate Cookie. The envelope was pretty much intact though. It had his name scrawled out in pretty cursive. He traced over the letters with his finger slowly. Clover Cookie had nice handwriting… If only he had gotten to read that stupid letter… All he had was this dumb empty envelope. Or he had thought it was empty. As he was tracing over the letters he felt the outline of something thin still inside. He dumped it out onto his hand. It was a dried and pressed flower. Light yellow. How sickeningly sweet that cookie… He twirled it around in his fingers. By the witches, he really wanted to read that letter…

That 2nd part was a separate thing but I tacked it on at the end because it's really short

Chapter 9: Licorice Sea-crets

Notes:

The aforementioned huge huge expo dump chapter on my Licorice Cookie backstory. Again, not the most canonically sound thing but I sure tried to get it close as possible with the little info we have.

Chapter 9: Licorice Cookie POV
......
He was finally back here again. The forest. Licorice Cookie hadn’t ever really thought himself fond of forests and nature. He didn’t dislike it, but it was only now he felt actually happy to be in one. He made his way through, anxious to see Clover Cookie again. Ever since Dark Choco Cookie had so rudely left the cookies of darkness, Licorice Cookie was the last thing on anyone's mind. Giving him the time to see Clover Cookie for however much he wanted. Well, granted he could find him. Licorice Cookie was kinda betting on the fact he’d be home, but there was a pretty high chance that he was traveling… It was just a risk he’d have to take. Worst case scenario he’d just have to search for him.
It was only a matter of time until Licorice cookie reached Clover Cookie’s little cottage in the woods. He nervously twirled the dried flower from the envelope in his fingers as he approached. Clover Cookie wasn’t outside, he could only hope he was inside. He hesitantly knocked on the door. Geeze, what was he doing..? He barely knew this cookie! Sure, he was really nice, and he was a great listener, and kinda cute- but- but that was no reason for Licorice Cookie to go out of his way to see him like this! He barely even knew him! This was crazy. He should just leave and-
“Oh, it's you,” Clover Cookie said, opening the door. Well, too late to turn back now.
“Eh, yes! ‘Tis I!” Licorice Cookie Cleared his throat. “How uhm, how are you?”Licorice
Clover Cookie looked down to Licorice Cookie’s hands, “You got my letter?”
Licorice Cookie delicately held up the flower in his hands, “Well, I got it but I wasn’t able to read it… My co-worker destroyed it. This was all that was left.”
“Probably for the best,” Clover Cookie sighed pensively.
“I do like the flower though! Eheheh… Uhm, did you pick it yourself?”
“Yes. Butter yellow… I thought it matched your eyes…”
“I’m sorry, did I do something wrong? You lack your usual enthusiasm..”
Clover Cookie looked him directly in the eyes, a serious and somewhat pained expression, “Licorice Cookie, I know you work for Dark Enchantress Cookie.”
Licorice Cookie’s stomach dropped. He knew what that meant, “Oh. I see… I’ll take my leave then.”
Clover cookie took Licorice Cookie’s hand before he could leave, “No, no. Stay.”
“I- Okay…”
“I need you to explain yourself. Please. I really don't want to believe you’re a bad cookie.”
“I can do that. For- for you.”
“Thank you,” Clover Cookie nodded, letting go of Licorice Cookie’s hand. He invited the other cookie inside and they sat down at the table.
“How did you find out?” Licorice cookie asked, too cowardly to look Clover Cookie in the eyes.
“Does it matter?”
“I suppose not…”
Clover cookie sighed once again, “Well if you must know, I was a little suspicious when that one cookie with the strange arm and the cake hound said you worked for her, but I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt. And then I was talking about you with Herb Cookie and he recognized your name. And he informed me of your uhm, status. And then I remembered that you knew Gingerbrave, so I asked him and his crew if they could corroborate Herb Cookie’s story. And uhm, yes. That's how I know."
“Oh…”
“So please, tell me your side of the story. I’m all ears.”
“Here goes nothing I guess.. Eheh.. Uhm- Well, ever since I was a child I've always wanted to be a powerful wizard. I read as many spell books as I could get my doughy little hands on, and practiced pretty much everyday. I was really enthusiastic about the whole thing. No one else in my village believed in me though. Nor did they really care... No matter how hard I tried, it felt like there was nothing I could do that would change that. I made it my mission to get the recognition I deserved from them. I spent years traveling, and-and training myself and trying to find something that'd really prove that I was deserving of their respect. I stumbled upon dark magic during that time, and crossed paths with Dark Enchantress Cookie. She was so- so powerful and cool and she wanted to change the world! She even offered to guide me in the ways of dark magic! She was the first person to see my potential! Of course, I did refuse her offer at the time.. Her idea of “changing the world” included a lot of destruction, which at the time I wasn't too fond of. Something I wouldn't have ever dreamed of until uhm…” This was the part of the story Licorice Cookie was dreading.
“Until?”
“Until I found this one spell, a uhm, summoning spell. Something I had become somewhat proficient at. This one was on a lot larger scale than I was used to performing, however, it was licorice magic so it would probably come a lot more naturally to me than most other spells. I decided that would be what I would use to prove myself as a wizard to my people. I made my way back to my village and performed the ritual at the Licorice Sea, summoning the great beast of the depths or what have you. I felt truly powerful. But uhm… I-I didn't have a lot of control over them. I wasn't nearly strong enough yet. Things escalated very quickly. Before I knew it Licorice Village was in ruins,” Licorice Cookie started to tear up, “All I wanted was for them to respect me, m-maybe even fear me, but I never wanted to hurt anyone! They- e-everyone had crumbled… And, as the monster came for me last, I was ready to accept my fate. I didn't want to live knowing I had caused all of- that! But of course, like some sort of cruel joke, as the sun rose over the Dark Cacao Kingdom, the monster turned to dust right in front of my eyes. Nothing was left… All that strawberry jam was on my hands…” Licorice Cookie paused as he tried to hold back tears.
Clover Cookie got up and stood before Licorice Cookie. He held his arms open, offering an embrace. Licorice Cookie immediately wrapped his arms around Clover Cookie's waist tightly, not even wasting time to get up from his chair first. He buried his face in the other cookie’s torso and said, muffled, “I'm sorry. This is so pathetic…”
“Shhhh,” Clover Cookie said as he took him into his arms. He started to soothingly rub Licorice Cookie's back to comfort him, “It's okay. You can cry, I don't mind.”
With that, Licorice Cookie erupted into uncontrollable sobs. His body trembled so much that it hurt as he cried into Clover Cookie's arms. Oh how truly pitiful he was… It felt good to really cry though. He hadn't allowed himself such vulnerability in such a long time. He had thought he was above that by now. But here he was, tears pouring from his eyes in the arms of a cookie he barely knew, all because he had shown him a little kindness.
Eventually the tears subsided and he let go of Clover Cookie. He wiped his face with his sleeves and sniffled, “Thank you.”
“Of course, my friend,” Clover Cookie smiled softly as he sat back down.
“I'll- I'll finish my story now.”
“Go ahead.”
“After I had done that I figured there was no other option but to join Dark Enchantress Cookie. It's not like I could make up for what I had done. There was no one left to make it up to! And- I mean where else could I go? If I was going to be evil I was at least going to be the best at it. I joined the cookies of darkness and have worked on gaining Dark Enchantress Cookie’s favor ever since. Which is difficult because she is very hard to please. Eheh… Yeah. That's uhm- that's what happened.”
Clover Cookie took a second to process all the information that had just been presented before him. “Wow… How tragic… I'm so sorry Licorice Cookie…” he paused a moment, thinking if he should say these next words, “But you do know you don't have to continue on this path, right?”
“What does that mean?”
“You don't have to work for her. Your fate isn't sealed just yet. I mean, clearly you're remorseful and everything.”
Licorice Cookie didn't really know what to say to that.“I- I uh- well- I- No. No, this is the path I chose. I'm going to make Dark Enchantress Cookie proud of me. That's my purpose now.”
“If you say so,” Clover Cookie frowned. Ow.
“Don't- don't be sad though! I'm happy now! Trust me! This is what's right for me! I know it's probably not ideal for you, but I'm still the same cookie, eh- right?”
“I know… I'm sorry, I was so sure I already had enough time to process this, but I guess not. It's just a bit hard to hear that the cookie you fancied wants to throw the world into chaos, you know?”
Licorice Cookie felt his face warm up, “...You like me?”
Clover Cookie stared at him, confused for a moment. Then he chuckled warmly to himself as he remembered, “Oh that's right! You never got to read my letter! Yes, I do like you. Or, I thought I did…”
“Oh…” Licorice Cookie said, feeling almost guilty.
“Sorry that came out wrong! I do still like you, I really do. I'm just finding myself a bit morally conflicted at the moment.”
“I see..”
“I'll sleep on it. Okay? I mean, I guess that's assuming you return the sentiment.”
“I mean, I don't mind entertaining the idea of you. I guess.”
Clover Cookie shook his head and smiled, “What am I ever going to do with you…”
There was an awkward silence for a moment. “Clover Cookie, you don't hate me for this right?” Licorice Cookie asked, fidgeting with his fingers.
“Hate you? Witches, no! I could never hate you! I could never truly hate any cookie. There's two sides to every story. I believe everyone always has their reasons for what they do, even Dark Enchantress Cookie herself. Though I might ehm, heavily disagree with the path you've stumbled onto, I do now understand where you're coming from. Besides if I did hate you, you wouldn't be invited into my home like you are right now.”
“I guess you have a point.”
Clover Cookie got up from his seat, “It's getting late, you should head home.”
“Will I ever see you again?”
“I'll tell you what, meet me here first thing in the morning. I'll hopefully have made up my mind by then.”
“Sounds- sounds good!” Licorice Cookie said, standing up from his chair. With that he was on his way back home. He couldn't wait till tomorrow.

Chapter 10: Clover Cookie POV
......
Clover Cookie knocked on Herb Cookie's door. He knew it was late but what were friends for if not pestering them in the middle of the night?
Herb Cookie answered the door, rubbing his eyes, “Clover Cookie, do you know what time it is?”
“Yes, I apologize but I need your help,” he held up the bottle of berry juice he'd brought home with him from the Holly Berry Kingdom, “Please?”
“Alright, alright, come in…”
Clover Cookie followed Herb Cookie inside his plant-filled home, and took his regular seat in an armchair in Herb Cookie's living room. Herb Cookie grabbed two juice glasses and a bottle opener, then joined his friend.
“So, what's on your mind?” Herb Cookie said, pouring out some juice for the two of them.
Clover Cookie took his glass and swirled it around, “Well, I'd like your input on something, though I already know what you're probably going to say…”
“Oh?”
“Well, you remember that cookie I was talking about a few days ago?”
Herb Cookie frowned, “Oh dear. Is this about Licorice Cookie again?”
“Yes- but things have changed now!”
“I am going to need more juice aren't I?”
“Please, I understand it's a bit crazy that I'm even considering this, but he's really not that bad if you look past the whole, evil thing.”
Herb Cookie slid the bottle closer to himself, “Got it. More juice.”
Clover Cookie took a sip of his drink and sighed, “I'm sorry, I know it's totally insane, but he's just- Oh I don't- I don't know! I guess I would say endearing? He's so adorable and he's not even that bad! He just wants approval! The approval might just so happen to be from Dark Enchantress Cookie, but all I'm saying is that eventually, maybe it could be from me instead…”
Herb Cookie finished up his glass and poured himself another one, “You’re just as optimistic as ever, aren't you?”
“You think I'm being stupid don't you?”
“As your best friend I'm legally obligated to tell you the truth and say yes. Sorry.”
“Oh dear… You're right… What am I doing? He's crazy and evil but- I mean he cried in my arms today! He writes me cute letters, and he likes my music, and we've cuddled on the couch! He's very tender hearted deep down and-I just- I know he's not a threat! He'd hate that I said that, but it's true. I just- I really like him, Herb Cookie…” Clover Cookie took a deep breath to calm himself down. He opened up his mouth to say more, but came up blank, instead finishing off his glass.
“I know you do… But are you really willing to sacrifice your moral code for some cookie you hardly know?”
Clover Cookie held his glass up to Herb Cookie, who then filled it back up with juice. Clover Cookie took a sip and sighed, “I hate this.” He put his glass down and buried his head in his hands, “I'm so terrible at relationships! First you and I don't work out because we're far too similar, and now Licorice Cookie and I are too different… How tragic… I've heard and told many a love story, but I've never been able to forge my own…”
“Hey, don't get all mopy poet on me just yet, you're only 1 drink in,” Herb Cookie said, half-jokingly. He reached over and pulled one of Clover Cookie's hands away from his face, holding it gently in his own. “Look, you are a very compassionate cookie. You know I find that beautiful, but, you know, it is also sometimes, to your detriment. I just think you deserve a cookie who is uhm- y'know, not working for Dark Enchantress Cookie.”
“I just want a companion to write my own life story with… is that so much to ask for?”
“I'm sorry Clover Cookie,” Herb Cookie held up Clover Cookie's glass, “Juice?”
“Please.”

Notes:

Oh yeah did I mention that Herb Cookie and Clover Cookie are exes in my au? Well, they are. Oopsie daisy! They're a cute ship and their BOND STORY?! Hello??? Very queer. But yk, it's Cloverice time so step aside grass boy.

Chapter 11: Decisions..

Sorry for the messy POVs in this one! I think it's still readable just not as clean and straightforward as I wanted it to be, you'll see.

Chapter Text

Licorice Cookie waited at Clover Cookie's front door for what felt like ages. Knocking every once in a while, just in case maybe he didn't hear him or- or something like that, right? Maybe he had decided that he didn't want to see him again… Which would be entirely characteristic of Licorice Cookie’s rotten luck.
Just as he was about to go home and cut his losses (and vent in his diary) he heard footsteps come from behind him.
“I'm here! I'm here!” a disheveled looking Clover Cookie panted, trying to catch his breath. “Sorry I got a bit uhm, caught up in something! I'm here! I hope you weren't waiting too long!”
Licorice Cookie crossed his arms and looked away, “I was actually just about to leave, so…”
“Oh dear, I'm sorry…”
“It's fine I guess. But I am a kinda busy cookie so we should hurry this up.” He didn't actually have anything going on that day, but he wasn't going to let Clover Cookie know that.
“Right… Do you mind if we go inside? It's so bright out here and my head is pounding…”
“Are you- okay?”
“Yes, yes. Don't worry about me.”
They both headed inside Clover Cookies house. A sight that was becoming increasingly familiar to Licorice Cookie, not that he really minded. Clover Cookie started brewing a cup of coffee, holding his head in one of his hands. He finished preparing his drink and sat down with Licorice Cookie on the couch.
“Sooooooooo…” Clover Cookie said, tapping the side of his mug nervously.
“Yeah?”
Clover Cookie looked Licorice Cookie in the eyes, he parted his lips, but his words failed to come out. He broke eye contact and stared into his reflection in his coffee instead. “Sorry, this is a lot harder than I planned on… uhm…” He pensively bit his lip, desperately trying to find a good way to say this, “I talked with my friend Herb Cookie last night, and we came to the conclusion that- uhm-”
Clover Cookie sat up and looked back to his guest. Oh dear… Did he have to look at him like that with those sad, tired yellow eyes of his? It stung, knowing what Clover Cookie was supposed to say. “Who am I kidding? I can't do this.” Clover Cookie buried his face in Licorice Cookie’s shoulder and sighed. “I've been heavily advised against this, but I really do want to continue being your friend. I can't betray my heart like this.”
Licorice Cookie sat extremely still, as if Clover Cookie was a cat who would leave if he moved even an inch. He cleared his throat, “That's- that's uhm- good to hear! You won't regret this!”
Clover Cookie reached up and brushed the hair from Licorice Cookie's face, “I hope you're right.” He took his head off Licorice Cookie's shoulder and gave him a small, brief kiss on the cheek.
“Oh!” Licorice Cookie's eyes widened, his heart started to pound in his chest. It was a simple little gesture, but he rarely got much more than an acknowledging nod from most cookies. This was- this was new to say the least.
Clover Cookie giggled, “Sorry, was that too forward?”
He cleared his throat and tried to regain his composure, “I uh, suppose I can allow it.”
“Oh how very generous of you,” Clover Cookie smiled. His smile faltered for a moment, and only a moment, as he looked slightly past Licorice Cookie to the window. “Licorice Cookie, I think your friends are here.”
Licorice Cookie whipped his head around to take a look. Poison Mushroom Cookie waved at him before a large cakey paw scooped them up out of sight from the window. Licorice Cookie stormed over to the window and flung it open. He looked over to the little miscreants beside him, “What are you doing here?!
Poison Mushroom Cookie smiled sleepily,“Hiiiii Licorice Cookieee! Choco Werehound Brute and Batcat wanted to see what your ‘super duuuuper top secret mission’ was abouuuut, and they followed you here, and I followed theeeeem.”
“I told you all not to follow me!!! I can't believe you'd disobey me like that! I'm very disappointed.”
“Whattt! Nooooo!” Poison Mushroom Cookie said with complete devastation in their tiny voice.
“Meowster, please! We just wanted to know what you were hiding from us!” Batcat frantically attempted to explain.
“I told you! It's super duper top secret! You aren't supposed to know! I'm doing very important business here!”
“That didn't look like ‘important business’ to me...” Choco Werehound Brute muttered audibly.
Licorice Cookie went red, “Shut up Schwartzwalder!!! You- ugh! You guys just wouldn’t understand! It's all a part of my plan!”
“Is it now?” Clover Cookie said from behind him with a knowing smile.
“Hi Clover Coooookie!” Poison Mushroom Cookie said, completely putting aside the entire conversation.
“Hello my friends! It's a pleasure to see you all again! Would you like to come in?”
Licorice Cookie crossed his arms and shook his head, “No! You all should head back immediately! You disobeyed my direct orders!”
“You did toooooo…” Poison Mushroom Cookie pointed out.
“What?”
“Pomegranate Cookie said you can't be friends with Clover Cookie anymore but you're at his houuuseee. That's not fair at alllllll.”
“I- this is different!”
“I dunnoooo…”
“Ugh fine! You can stay! Just don't tell anyone, okay?”
“Yayyyy!”
“You three have to promise me this never gets out to any other cookie. Not Pomegranate Cookie, not Dark Enchantress, not anyone.”
“IIIII prooooomise.”
Choco Werehound Brute and Batcat nodded in agreement.
“Fine then! You can join us if you really want to.”
Clover Cookie clasped his hands together joyfully, “How splendid! Come on in, everyone!”
The three new parties joined them inside. Clover Cookie stood awkwardly to the side as they sat down on his couch.
“I do apologize Choco Werehound Princess- or is it Brute now? Or Schwartzwalder? Regardless, this house wasn't really made with Werehounds in mind… I hope it's not too cramped or uncomfortable,” said Clover Cookie, ever the worrisome cookie-pleaser.
“Choco Werehound Brute,” The werehound shrugged, “And I’m fine.”
“I'm glad to hear it!” Clover Cookie began rummaging through his cupboards, “Can I get anything for you all? I have tea, coffee, maybe even something to snack on… Oh wait, no, there's nothing in here. I guess I need to run errands soon! My offer for tea and coffee still stand though!”
“I'm okay Clover Cookieeee, I have my shroomiess. Do youuu want one?” Poison Mushroom Cookie said, appearing behind Clover Cookie, offering him a small purple mushroom.
Clover Cookie hesitantly took it and gently placed it inside his skirt pocket. “That is so sweet. I will save this for later.”
Poison Mushroom Cookie's eyes lit up, “Woaaaah, nobody’s ever said yes to my shroomies before!”
“Oh dear, that's quite a shame. It's a thoughtful gift, my small purple friend. I very much appreciate it,” Clover Cookie leaned down and booped Poison Mushroom Cookie on the nose.
They giggled, “Hehehe! I like you! I think you're my second favorite friend besides Pomegranate Coooookie.”
That made Clover Cookie's heart just melt. He scooped up Poison Mushroom Cookie and held him tight, “Awww! Y'know, you are one of my favorite friends too. Now, what are we to do? I wasn't planning on having so many guests to entertain.”
Licorice Cookie interjected, “We really needn't bother you with any of that Clover Cookie! We should all head home anyway, don't want the others to become suspicious of us.” He wouldn't have had to worry about that if it was just the two of them like he'd planned.
Clover Cookie frowned, “Would it hurt you to stay a bit longer? I feel like our meetings always get cut short.”
“I- well, like I said before, I am a very busy cookie. But I guess if you really want we can stand to stay around a bit longer.”
“Long enough for a song perhaps?” Clover Cookie offered with big pleading eyes, desperately hoping the answer was yes.
“I mean- I won't say no if- if you want to.”
Clover Cookie squealed in excitement, shifting Poison Mushroom Cookie to one arm so he could grab his lute in the other. He sat down in a rickety old chair across from the couch, the smaller cookie in his lap. Licorice Cookie sat with Schwartzwalder and Batcat on the couch as Clover Cookie began to play. As Licorice Cookie listened he felt- he didn't quite know- uh warm? Like everything else in the world was melting away to the sound of Clover Cookie's voice. All his worries, his insecurities, his guilt, and everything else in between. He felt safe, and yet so open and exposed. All of this was so new and uncomfortable and cheesy and gross, but at the same time he was so ready to embrace it. Feeling all warm and doughy inside was starting to become just a little more bearable now. Maybe having just this one weakness was okay…
After Clover Cookie was finished Licorice Cookie insisted that they really had to take their leave now. It was only mid-day but better safe than sorry.
“I like Clover Cookie. The spores like him too,” Poison Mushroom Cookie said as they made their way home through the forest.
“He's fine I guess,” Licorice Cookie shrugged, holding the younger cookie's hand.
“Just ‘fine’, Meowster? Are you sure?” Batcat snickered.
“H-hey! What does that mean?! You know, I am really not appreciating the sass from you lately, Mr.”
“C'meown Licorice Cookie, I me-ay be undead but I'm not blind. I kn-eow what I saw,” Batcat pointed to Licorice Cookie’s cheek with his paw, “You still have a bit of lip gloss on your cheek by the way.”
Licorice Cookie frantically wiped his face with his sleeve. “Shut up! Sure okay- okay maybe he is somewhat fond of me! That doesn't mean I- well- I mean he's nice and all but- no, there's nothing going on! I'm fine!”
“I for one think it's meow-velous you've found love, Meowster!”
“I'm not- No it's not ‘love’! Licorice Cookie does not ‘fall in love’, that's ridiculous! You're all ridiculous!”
“Licorice Cookie and Clover Cookie sitting in a tree, k-i-s-e-n-g,” Poison Mushroom Cookie giggled.
“That's not even how you spell that!”
Licorice Cookie’s three companions picked on him the whole rest of their journey home. He was never going to hear the end of this… That Clover Cookie had better be worth it.

Not my favorite chapter thus far, but I already rewrote it once so it's what I'm settling for.

Chapter 12: Sour n Sweet

Chapter Text

Chapter 12: Licorice Cookie POV
.....
A few days later Licorice Cookie decided he should visit Clover Cookie once more. He did feel a bit bad for always popping in all unannounced like this, he'd have to set some form of communication up with him. But alas, for now just showing up all out of the blue like this late afternoon was all he could do. He knocked on Clover Cookie's door and waited. And waited a bit more. Maybe he was out running errands or something? No matter, it's not like Licorice Cookie had better things to do. After the failure in the Dark Cacao kingdom, (which finally wasn't Licorice Cookie’s fault this time) there had only been a bit of plotting and drawing up possible next schemes. He hadn't had any assignments for a while, which usually he'd be upset about, but now the free time was very er, convenient for him.
“What are you doing here?” a cookie said from behind him, immediately snapping Licorice Cookie out of his thoughts. Standing behind him was Clover Cookie's friend from the bar. What was his name again? Herb Cookie maybe? Regardless of his name he looked very upset to see Licorice Cookie here.
“Well I uh- It's none of your business! What are you doing here?”
“This is my best friend's house! It's 100% my business! You're not supposed to be here, Clover Cookie told you to leave him be.”
“What? No he didn't!’ Licorice Cookie did recall a lot of hesitation in Clover Cookie's words when he said he would continue to be his friend. It was apparent that this was most definitely one of the reasons why.
“As if I'd believe a Cookie of Darkness! You had better get out of here before-”
Herb Cookie was interrupted as Clover Cookie opened the door, it looked like he had just rolled out of bed. His hair was a mess, he was in an, admittedly really cute and frilly, nightgown with one sleeve slumped over his shoulder.
“What is going on out here?” Clover Cookie yawned, not really awake enough to process the situation.
Herb Cookie turned to look at him, and pointed to Licorice Cookie, “What's going on is that this cookie is claiming that you never turned him down. Which is crazy because you promised me that you would.”
Clover Cookie suddenly realized who exactly was at his front door, and his eyes widened in panic. Safe to say he was now fully awake. “I uh– See he could be claiming that because I uhm- I may have possibly not turned him down. Funny how that works, huh?”
“You- you- what?! Clover Cookie, we talked about this!”
“Yes I know we did, but I just- well, you know he's just- I mean look at him!” Clover Cookie said, struggling to find any words that would clear his name; instead gesturing to Licorice Cookie’s face.
Herb Cookie did look at him, though utterly unimpressed with him and the entire situation. He then turned to Clover Cookie and frowned, “I can't believe you.”
“I know, I know I'm sorry! I know it's not what you wanted to hear. But it's just- it's what my heart wants, and-and who am I to betray my own heart?”
“Ah, no cheesy romantics right now. You tell this cookie that you don't want to see him again. He's evil, Clover Cookie. E-v-i-l. You can't date evil cookies!”
“Evil is a strong word-”
“It is accurate though,” Licorice Cookie ever so unhelpfully added, “Also did-did you say date?!”
Herb Cookie disregarded that second part, “See, he admits it! He's evil!”
“Well then you don't have to date him then do you?” Clover Cookie huffed.
Licorice Cookie interjected, “A-again with the dating thing guys I-”
They both ignored him and continued bickering:
“This is why we broke up, Clover Cookie! You're way too free spirited and go-with-the-flow! You need to learn to reel yourself in or you're going to keep getting hurt!”
“I thought you liked that about me!”
“I do! I just- I'm not going to always be there to pick up the pieces okay? I want you to make safe choices!” Herb Cookie held Clover Cookie's hands, “You're my best friend, I just want what's best for you.”
“I know you do, Herb Cookie. I appreciate that, but I'm a grown cookie. I can take care of myself. You don't need to worry about me so much..”
“I know, I know… A cookie of darkness though? Really? You can't just fix him, Clover Cookie.”
“The heart wants what it wants.”
Herb Cookie sighed and smiled, defeated, “I'm not going to convince you otherwise, am I?”
“Nope!”
“Very well then,” Herb Cookie took his hands back and dusted them off. “I guess I'll leave you two be…”
Clover Cookie nodded, “Thank you.”
Herb Cookie snuck one last glare at Licorice Cookie before continuing his walk.
“Well that was… awkward,” Licorice Cookie said once Herb Cookie was out of view.
Clover Cookie rested against the doorframe and looked at Licorice Cookie guiltily, “I'm ever so sorry about him… He has only the best intentions at heart I promise.”
Licorice Cookie jumped to comfort him, that sad expression on his companion's face made his heart just ache, “No, it's fine really! I understand. I know I'm not exactly earthbread’s most popular cookie. Eheh..”
Clover Cookie smiled, “Yes well, I guess more for me then.”
“Ehehehe… yeah..”
There was an awkward pause before Clover Cookie cleared his throat, “I apologize, I just woke up... I probably look a mess don't I? I'll go fix myself up, uhm, would you like to come in?”
“I mean, I think you look pretty,” Licorice Cookie blurted.
Clover Cookie tucked his hair behind his ear bashfully, “You do?”
“I- pretty okay I meant! You look pretty okay.”
“Well you look ‘pretty okay’ yourself, Licorice Cookie.”
“Oh! Thank you, ehe.”
“Now get in here before someone else sees you and reprimands me,” Clover Cookie said, gently pushing Licorice Cookie through the door. “So, to what do I owe the honor of your presence this fine day?”
“Oh, I just uhm, thought I should pop by. I mean you must be awfully lonely without me, and I was feeling a little extra generous today. Heheh..”
“Aw, you were thinking of me, how sweet. I must be the luckiest cookie in the world,” Clover Cookie said, half jokingly.
“It's not sweet, stop saying that!”
Clover Cookie wrapped his arms around Licorice Cookie’s neck, “Oh but it is my dear Licorice Cookie! You're going out of your way just to see little old me. Something I highly doubt Dark Enchantress would appreciate. That's incredibly sweet, my friend.”
Licorice Cookie stared at the cookie before him. His gaze was so full of warmth and kindness, Licorice Cookie couldn't believe Clover Cookie was actually looking at well, him. This was all he'd ever wanted… Licorice Cookie placed his hands on each side of Clover Cookie's face and brushed the hair out of his other eye. He searched for something, anything to say, but came up completely blank, “I uhm- I- you- Your eyes are… uhm- blue. Very blue.” Oh he was hopeless…
Clover Cookie chuckled softly, “Thank you dear,” He rested his forehead against Licorice Cookie’s and peacefully closed his eyes, “You just have such a way with words,” He sarcastically remarked.
Licorice Cookie took his hands back and crossed his arms, “Well there's no need to be rude!”
“My apologies, I'm just messing with you, Licorice Cookie.”
“Oh whatever.”
Clover cookie kissed Licorice Cookie on the cheek, “Oh, you're just too cute.”
There he was again with that loving, tender gaze that made Licorice Cookie's knees all weak. How utterly enchanting he was… Licorice Cookie just wanted to lean in and-
“Oh dear, the sun is setting. I didn't sleep in that long did I?” Clover Cookie said with concern, taking his arms back. Aw man…
“I mean, yeah you did. But that's okay, I mean y'know, everyone has those days! I know I do! Er- frequently.”
“That's not it, I just stayed up far too late yesterday.”
“Doing what?”
“Something terribly embarrassing I'm afraid…”
“Like what?”
Clover Cookie ran his fingers through his unkempt hair and looked away ashamedly, still smiling of course, “Writing a song for you…”
“A song? For- for me?”
“I know, I know. It's quite cheesy… I just- I missed you a lot while you were gone. It's the only thing I could think to write about.”
Licorice Cookie looked up at him, eyes bright and wide with excitement, “Can I hear it?”
Clover Cookie was pleasantly surprised by that response, “Oh! Well it's not done yet, but perhaps another time?”
“Yes, I'd love- er, I wouldn't mind that.”
“Delightful! It's a date!”
“A- a date?!”
“Yes… Licorice Cookie I feel I have made my affection for you quite clear, no?”
“I- Well- I mean yeah, I just never thought I'd hear someone say those words to me…”
“Oh dear. How sad…”
“Sorry that sounded so pathetic.. That's not what I, uh, intended.”
“Ohhhh, my poor Licorice Cookie,” Clover Cookie frowned, wrapping his arms tightly around his friend, “The world has not been kind to you, has it, my dear?”
Licorice Cookie went stiff momentarily before slowly allowing himself to succumb to his embrace, closing his eyes. It felt like home, more than any home of his had been. Even with Dark Enchantress Cookie he had always felt inadequate; but with Clover Cookie? Everything was just right… Juuuuust right…
Clover Cookie sighed, holding him just a bit tighter, “I suppose I should get dressed, though there's really no point now, considering it's nearly night time.”
“I think you look nice,” Licorice Cookie said, his face buried in Clover Cookie's shoulder.
“Well if that's the case, I won't change a thing,” They continued to stand there for a moment, Clover Cookie humming quietly, until he spoke up, “I'm quite famished, friend. Would you like something to eat as well?”
Licorice Cookie looked up at him and pondered for a moment, then shrugged, “I mean, I could eat.”
Clover Cookie reluctantly released him from his embrace. “I'll whip up some jellies for us then. Though I do wish I could treat you to something nicer. Alas I can't exactly bring you into town given your status. Nor do I have the funds to do so regardless..”
“It's fine! I-I don't need anything fancy. It's not as if I'm accustomed to it or anything.”
“I know. Now, come help me would you?”
“Oh, yes! Of course!”
After dinner Licorice Cookie found himself on the couch next to Clover Cookie.
“We've been here before, haven't we?” Clover Cookie remarked, “That night you ever so creepily followed me home? It gave me and Herb Cookie quite the scare, you know.”
“Yeah I know, but it's like- Oh, I dunno… I panicked! I didn't know what to do! I really should have just had Batcat deliver the letter…”
“I'm glad you didn't though. After all,” Clover Cookie leaned in, placing one of his hands on top of Licorice Cookie’s, “I probably would have never seen you again.”
“And what a- a shame that would be heheh,” Licorice Cookie agreed nervously.
“An absolute tragedy my friend.”
Licorice Cookie nodded, then slowly and hesitantly leaned his head on Clover Cookie's shoulder. Clover Cookie rested his head atop Licorice Cookie’s and pulled him in closer; wrapping both his arms snug around him. He closed his eyes and mumbled as he dozed off, “Yes, an absolute tragedy.”
Licorice Cookie followed him in his slumber not too long after.

Chapter 13: Good Morning!

Chapter Text

Chapter 13: Clover Cookie POV
.....
Clover Cookie's eyes slowly fluttered open as he awoke the next morning. Well, no it wasn't morning yet in the slightest. It was still pitch black out, he hadn't slept much at all. He supposed that made sense since he had slept practically the whole day yesterday, but he did almost wish he could stay asleep with Licorice Cookie just a bit longer. He looked to that aforementioned cookie still soundly slumbering in his arms. Oh how darling he was… Clover Cookie wanted to stay like this forever. He'd missed this feeling of closeness with another cookie. Alas, it would probably be the smart choice to get up and be productive. Especially since he hadn't done much of anything yesterday. Curses…
Clover Cookie slowly got up; gently laying Licorice Cookie down and placing a pillow under his head. He covered him with a blanket and gave him a little kiss on the forehead before leaving him. He freshened himself up in the bathroom, combing through his hair, washing his face, and what have you. He then ever so quietly made his way to his bedroom to get dressed and make his bed from his hasty wake-up yesterday. Now what was he to do… It was far too dark to do anything outside, and he didn't want to do anything too loud lest he wake up Licorice Cookie.
He looked over at his desk. A mess of papers and pens littering the surface. That's right! The song! He sat down and began writing. Or he tried to. Instead he found himself tapping his pen against his desk, coming up blank. Oh goodness.. He put his pen down and went to the kitchen to make himself some tea, hoping it would do, well he didn't know. Something? As his kettle of water started to boil on the stove, he sat down at his small little dining table behind his couch. The couch where Licorice Cookie was laid, snoring loudly. Clover Cookie smiled and admired him as he slept. Which, admittedly he knew was a little creepy, but hey, now they were even.
His kettle started to whistle and he very quickly rushed to take it off the stove. He made his tea and sat back down in his room at his desk. He started writing and then scribbled it out. He crumpled the paper up and threw it behind him, exasperated. He so badly wanted to write this but he just couldn't. He was no stranger to writer's block but this time it was particularly frustrating. After all it had seemed like Licorice Cookie was so eager to hear his song. It had been the first time he'd seen him so excited. It was adorable! And now Clover Cookie couldn't even deliver a single line. And the words he had written half asleep the other day weren't nearly as good as he had thought they were. He sighed, displeased, and placed his head down on his desk. Oh dear oh dear…
He peeked up and out of his door to the living room. Oh how he wished Licorice Cookie would just wake up already. Alas, he wanted him to get his rest. Though sitting in the living room with him wouldn't hurt, right? He got up and took his tea and writing materials with him, and sat back down at the table.
“Oh Licorice Cookie, how do I write a song about you…” Clover Cookie despaired, glancing over at his friend. He stared for a moment, taking note of his companion's features. Dark, somewhat purplish, licorice hair, ashy grey dough, deep eyebags, a bony frame hidden under his baggy tattered robes, chewed up nails messily painted black, and his currently closed, but still surely very beautiful, soft yellow eyes. Oh he was simply wonderful. Imperfect, sure, but so was Clover Cookie.
He took a sip of his tea and thought for a while longer; attempting to fit his thoughts together like little puzzle pieces. Until finally it all clicked into place. He started scrawling out line upon line, scrapping some, revising others, etc. as the sun slowly rose over the horizon. Licorice Cookie slowly stirred as the light filtered through the window onto his face.
“Clover Cookie?” He mumbled quietly as he opened his eyes.
Clover Cookie perked up at the mention of his name, “You're awake!”
Licorice Cookie sat up and stretched, “Barely.”
“Sleep well?”
“Fine,” he yawned.
“Yay!” he got up and sat next to Licorice Cookie, “I'm so glad you're up, I was getting quite lonely.”
Licorice Cookie smiled sleepily, leaning on Clover Cookie, “Aw, can't do anything without me, huh?”
Clover Cookie placed an arm around Licorice Cookie's shoulder, “I suppose I can't, no.”
“Well, I don't blame you," he said, snuggling in closer.
“I also just needed you to stop snoring. It was very distracting,” Clover Cookie teased.
“I do not snore!”
“Oh you certainly do. It's adorable, but one can only take so much.”
“Ah- don't call me that! I am not adorable, I am cool!” Licorice Cookie crossed his arms in protest. Though quickly failed in maintaining his confidence. “Right? I'm cool? Do you think I'm cool?”
“Aw, of course, my dear.”
“Good, good.”
“Now, what would you like to do today? Or do you have to be on your way and leave me again?”
“Don't say it like that, you know I can't let the others grow suspicious of me. I'm already running quite the risk with Poison Mushroom Cookie, I'm surprised they haven't let it slip to Pomegranate Cookie yet.. It's not like they forgot, they tell me how much they miss you all the time. And- and you know, I need to be ready in case Dark Enchantress Cookie needs me! Surely you understand?”
“Yes, yes, I understand. You have to leave me all alone to go tend to your oh so important and evil affairs.”
“I'm sorry. But- but it's not like I'll never see you again. And we can keep in touch!”
“How so?”
“Well, don't you have like- like a phone or something?”
“Eheh, uhm no… Herb Cookie keeps telling me to get one but I’ve been putting it off..”
“Oh. Hm, uhm okay- uhm… I guess there's a spell I could show you?”
“Really?”
“Yeah! I mean you don't really do magic so it could be a bit difficult to nail down, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.”
“Then please, do tell!”
Licorice Cookie stood up and then kneeled on the ground, pulling back the carpet, “Do you have any chalk?”
“Oh uhm, no. I can ask Herb Cookie if he still has some. He usually keeps some around for when he babysits.”
Licorice Cookie reached for a large piece of charcoal from the fire, “This will do.”
Clover Cookie watched as Licorice Cookie drew a sizable magic circle on the ground. He should probably have said something in protest to this but he was more excited and intrigued than he was worried about his floor.
Licorice Cookie stood up once he had finished, “There! I should probably test it with something…” he grabbed a flower from the vase on Clover Cookie's mantle and placed it in the center of the circle. He recited some sort of incantation and the circle began to glow. The flower disintegrated and then rematerialized in Clover Cookie's hand. “Alright! It works!”
“That's amazing,” Clover Cookie said, admiring the flower in his hands with pure awe.
“You think so?”
“Absolutely!”
“Well, I am a- a pretty powerful cookie, it's only natural you'd be impressed. Now, I need something to write the spell on for you. The paper on the table behind you would work just fine.”
“Oh! Uhmmm-” Clover Cookie sorted through his small messy pile of papers until he found a blank one. He handed it, along with his pen, to Licorice Cookie; who took it and messily scribbled out the phonetic spelling of the incantation.
“There. Now anytime you'd like to talk you can just write a letter or something and transport it directly into my hands.”
Clover cookie took the sheet of paper and smiled, “I will do exactly that."

Chapter 14: Licorice Cookie POV
.......
Licorice Cookie now sat back at his desk, detailing the day's events in his diary. His entries had become noticeably less frustrated over the last month or so. The fact that many, just like this one, revolved around a certain close friend of his, probably contributed to that. He was so focused on his writing that he barely heard his door creak open. He quickly slammed his diary shut and shoved it to the side in a panic. “Hey! Where are your manners?! Knock before you come in!”
“My apologies, Licorice Cookie.. Pomegranate Cookie sent me to inquire about something…” Affogato Cookie said slyly, sauntering into Licorice Cookie's chambers.
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever, just make it snappy!”
“Well, we've noticed quite an increase in the amount of absences you've taken lately. What's up with that, hmm?”
“It's none of your business what I do in my free time!”
“Relax Licorice Cookie. After Dark Choco Cookie's betrayal, it's only natural that Pomegranate Cookie would wish to keep tabs on outside activity, lest we have another traitor in our midst, hm?”
“Just what exactly are you suggesting?! I'd never betray Dark Enchantress Cookie!”
“If that's the case, then you wouldn't mind telling me where you've been, would you?”
“I- er- it's just- I-” Licorice Cookie stuttered as Affogato Cookie stepped closer. He had to come up with something fast or he was in deep trouble.
“Ooooo, what’s this I see?” Affogato Cookie said, picking up Licorice Cookie’s diary.
“Don't touch that!” Licorice Cookie jumped up from his seat and attempted to snatch it back.
Affogato Cookie swiftly moved to hold it out of Licorice Cookie's reach and chuckled, “My, my, that's quite the reaction…”
“Unhand my diary you fiend!” Licorice Cookie protested, still using all his might to reach for his belonging.
“Your diary, you say?” Affogato Cookie grinned mischievously and promptly started flipping through the pages.
“Stop that right now! I demand it! That's private!”
Affogato Cookie took a few steps back as he continued to skim through, “Oh this is far too juicy to just put down, Licorice Cookie.”
Licorice Cookie immediately went up to him and tried to grab it; but missed again, “I said stop!!!”
“Ooooooooh, Who is this Clover Cookie?”
“That’s- that's none of your beeswax!"
“Mmmmm, oh but it is. It seems I've found what Pomegranate Cookie was searching for! You've been sneaking out to have romantic escapades with this cookie. How sweet, sickeningly so.”
“I have not! There's nothing ‘romantic’ going on between me and any cookie! Especially not that do-gooder!”
“Usually I'd be inclined to believe that, but,” Affogato Cookie flipped the book around and pointed to an, admittedly a bit poorly, drawn picture of Clover Cookie with hearts around it, “The evidence is quite damning.”
“Eh- crumbs,” this was really the worst casenario, “Look- look you can't tell anyone!”
“Oh I'm afraid I must.”
“No! No please you can't! Please!” Licorice Cookie's voice shook as he began to panic.
“Ta ta, Licorice Cookie,” Affogato Cookie waved as he hastily exited with Licorice Cookie's diary. Licorice Cookie chased after him, desperate to get it back. But alas he was too late.
“Licorice Cookie, explain yourself,” Pomegranate Cookie said, looking up at him with a look of disgust and anger. Affogato Cookie stood behind her, giggling.
“I- well-” there was really nothing he could say here that would get him out of this, was there? “Okay so I've been hanging out with someone! What are you jealous of the fact that I have friends, unlike you?”
“Don't flatter yourself. I’m merely concerned that you may be losing sight of our mission..”
“So I just can't have friends now because you say so? Is that it?”
“You can't have friends that make you feel like…” she pointed to the open page, “this, Licorice Cookie.”
“And why not? It's not hurting anyone!”
“It's hurting our mission, Licorice Cookie. Dark Enchantress Cookie's success is much more important than this sappy disgusting mess. I will recommend once more that you get rid of your affections for this cookie. I won't warn you again.”
“That's not fair! I just want to feel appreciated, is that so bad?!”
Pomegranate Cookie sighed, “Licorice Cookie, I've heard enough. Please quiet yourself.”
“No! Tell me why this is just soooo bad! I'm still devoted to the cause! I have given my life to Dark Enchantress Cookie!”
“But surrounding yourself with cookies who are clearly against her might be detrimental considering your evidently highly suggestable nature. Now, that's enough, I don't want to hear anything more of this Clover Cookie ever again.”
“Well what if I made him join us?! He wouldn't be a threat then! Would that make you happy? Or do you just want me to be miserable like always?”
Pomegranate seriously considered it for a moment, “Well… I suppose we could use the extra hands. If you could manage to pull it off, I could manage to look the other way so to speak.”
Licorice Cookie was very caught off guard, “Wait- really?”
“I doubt you can, but I'll let you try.”
Licorice Cookie snatched his diary back and grinned smugly, “Oh I will..”

Chapter 15: Licorice Cookie POV
......
Licorice Cookie nervously walked through the forest on his way to meet up with Clover Cookie. He had sent over a letter asking to meet up. The details were a bit foggy, but he was less concerned about the why and more about how he was going to ask Clover Cookie about the whole “joining the cookies of darkness" thing.
It had felt to Licorice Cookie that he had been walking for a while now. The last bit of light was fading fast from the sky. To his luck, he started to see the faintest bit of light up ahead. As Licorice Cookie stepped into the small clearing he saw Clover cookie waiting there, illuminated just enough by a lantern. He was sitting on a blanket laid smack in the middle, lute by his side. It was a nice little place, Licorice Cookie thought to himself, made even nicer with Clover Cookie there.
“Hey,” Licorice Cookie waved as he approached.
Clover cookies eyes lit up at the sight of him, “You're here! I was worried you had gotten lost. Come, sit!”
Licorice Cookie did as he asked, sitting closely as possible to his friend, so much so that their legs were almost touching. He was through pretending he didn't like being close to him, and besides, he was gonna need to be a little extra sweet if he was going to convince Clover Cookie to leave his whole life behind for him. Eheh… Oh boy…
“So uhm, what’s up? Why'd you wanna see me?” Licorice Cookie asked, fidgeting with his hands.
“Wellll, I may have finished that little song from a bit ago. Did you still want to hear it?”
“Oh! Right, yes I remember. I wouldn't mind listening to it.”
“Great!” Clover Cookie reached for his lute, but stopped halfway, “Oh! Wait! I also wanted to give you,” He pulled a bag out of his pocket and placed it in Licorice Cookie’s hands, “these! I saw them at the market and thought you might like them.”
Licorice Cookie studied the bag in his hand. It was filled with licorice skull candies. “These are just for me right? Because I'm not sharing. I haven't had these in years.”
Clover Cookie smiled lovingly, “I take it you like them?”
“They're my favorite!” He opened the bag and popped one in his mouth. That hard candy shell and soft chewy licorice center was heavenly. “So good…”
“I'm glad you enjoy them! Now, time for the song. It's a bit cheesy but I do hope you like it.”
Clover Cookie picked up his lute for real this time and started to play. His smooth voice filled the empty silence of the woods as he sang. Enveloping Licorice Cookie in a beautifully crafted melody, made all the better because this time the song was all about him. This was the sweetest, most sappy and kind thing any cookie had ever done for him. It made him feel so special, so wanted. He hoped that he could make Clover Cookie feel like this one day…
After he had finished, Clover Cookie put down his instrument and looked to Licorice Cookie. “Sooo, did you like the song?”
Licorice Cookie didn't know what to say. He stared at Clover Cookie, searching for any words that could possibly explain how he felt. He looked to his beautiful, thoughtful blue eyes framed perfectly by his white eyelashes, then to his lips. He put a shaky hand on either side of Clover Cookie's face and gulped nervously. He couldn't believe that he was about to do this. He closed his eyes and awkwardly smashed his lips together with Clover Cookie’s. Their noses smushed up oddly against each other, and he didn't really know what to do beyond this point, but it still felt really nice.
Clover Cookie pulled his face away after a moment and chuckled, wiping his lips, “I'll take that as a yes.”
Licorice Cookie looked down and nervously picked at his hands, “Was that good? That was like my first kiss ever so…”
“It was good, but,” Clover Cookie lifted Licorice Cookie's face to look at him, “I think we can do better.”
He leaned in and tilted his head ever so slightly, pressing his lips against Licorice Cookie's in a much gentler fashion. It was wonderful.. and a lot less nose-smushy.
“Something like that?” Clover Cookie smiled, pulling away once more.
“Clover Cookie, would you join the cookies of darkness with me?” Licorice Cookie blurted out. He really didn't want what he and Clover Cookie had to end now. Though he probably could have worked on the delivery.
Clover Cookie opened his eyes wide in shock. Then his expression softened into a frown, “...What?”
“Sorry that wasn't supposed to come out like that! I just-”
“But it was supposed to come out?”
“Er- well I mean- yeah… Hear-h- hear me out! You'd be a great fit and- and we'd get to be together every day and you'd get to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself! It would be so wonderful, right?”
Clover Cookie buried his face in his hands and sighed heavily, “Licorice Cookie…”
“Please just think about it? Please?”
“No, I'm not going to think about it, Licorice Cookie,” Clover Cookie looked up, seemingly very disappointed, “I'm not going to abandon my life and my friends to join a cause you know I'm heavily against.”
“Please, Clover Cookie! Please if you don't join I'm not allowed to see you again! It'll be the end! And I really really really don't want that!”
“Can’t you just lie? You're evil, you should be accustomed to it.”
“I can't lie to Dark Enchantress Cookie! She's my master! I have dedicated everything to her!”
“Well I'm sorry, but I'm not throwing away my life for you.”
“Okay well, this is my life! And I really want you to be a part of it! You're the only person who's ever made me feel so appreciated..”
Clover Cookie sighed sadly, “Did you have to ruin such a good moment?”
“I'm sorry…”
Clover Cookie took a deep breath as his expression softened. He held Licorice Cookie’s hand as he spoke, “No, no. It's fine. I understand… I don't want this to be the end either.”
“Then you'll think about it?”
“...No.”
“Please! Please, you don't understand! If I'm not enough to entice you to the dark side, Dark Enchantress Cookie actually has a very good justification for everything! You see, cookies are-”
“Made to be eaten? Yes, I know.”
“Wha- You do?”
“Yes. I do know. I know Dark Enchantress’ story and I know we were made to be eaten. But that doesn't mean I can't create my own purpose beyond that. I quite like my life now. And while I do agree that maybe this truth about the witches should be brought to light, I don't want to hurt other cookies. I really really don't.”
“I won't make you hurt people if you join. Not if you don't want to.”
“Isn’t that the whole point though?”
“I'm sure I could find something you could do that wouldn't include anything like that. Please, I really want this to work.”
“I do too but- I don't know… maybe Herb Cookie was right. Maybe we are just two very different cookies…”
“Don't say that! We can make it work!”
“I thought we were already, but now you're asking this of me and I'm just not sure I can follow through.”
Licorice Cookie had really screwed up this time. If only he could keep his stupid mouth shut. He squeezed Clover Cookie’s hand, “I'll- I'll figure something out! I really don't want to lose you… I'm sorry…”
“It's quite alright… but could you leave please? I need a moment to be alone with my thoughts. I'll write to you later though I promise.”
Licorice Cookie hesitantly agreed to his request, “Okay. Again, I'm really sorry.”
Clover Cookie gave Licorice Cookie a parting kiss, “I hope you have a safe trip home.”
“Ehm, yes. I will.”
Licorice Cookie then set off for home. When he arrived, Affogato Cookie was waiting for him.
“So, did it go well?” he asked, though it was clear what he believed was the case. And unfortunately it was just as he thought.
“No..” Licorice Cookie regretfully admitted.
“Ah, what a shame. I suppose we won't be seeing your boyfriend any time soon.”
“He's not my boyfriend!!! And- and he said he'd think about it, so lay off!”
“Really now? Well, alright. I'll leave you be…” Affogato Cookie said, seemingly seeing right through Licorice Cookie’s lie. He then left Licorice Cookie to his lonesome just as he said he would. Oh Licorice Cookie just hated that guy… He was already dealing with quite enough without Affogato Cookie sticking his nose where he didn't belong. Goodness, he was really in it now…

Chapter 16: Quite the Dilemma

Notes:

This is a lot of straight yapping, but I wanted to add some of Clover Cookie's thoughts about the whole thing. Especially since most of this story has been Licorice Cookie's POV. Sorry if it's a bit too boring or anything :p

Chapter Text

Clover Cookie exasperatedly opened the front door to his cottage; kicking his boots off and carelessly tossing aside the blanket he had brought for his and Licorice Cookie’s little date. He placed his hat, lute, and lantern on his counter and then melted into one of his worn wooden chairs at the dining table. He buried his face in his arms and took a big deep breath in. The night had not gone the way he had planned. Not in the slightest.
It was a bit selfish, Clover Cookie admitted to himself, that he thought he could get away without the whole Dark Enchantress Cookie thing coming up again. In truth, it was part of who Licorice Cookie was, and something Clover Cookie couldn't choose to overlook if he really did love him. But he also really really wished it wasn't. It wasn't fair. Why was he expected to change so much about himself for Licorice Cookie? Why couldn't Licorice Cookie change for him? Not that Clover Cookie wanted that. He liked Licorice Cookie the way he was. Minus the crimes, misdeeds, and general evil doings, he was perfect. So charming, in that sopping wet cat sort of way, and so passionate, especially about magic, and despite claiming the opposite, incredibly sweet. He really didn't want to let go, but he might have to. For his own sake and Licorice Cookie's. Clover Cookie loved his life of traveling, making new friends, and sharing his music on the road; and Licorice Cookie seemed to be pretty happy serving his master. At least he said he was.
Maybe the best thing to do really was to let Licorice Cookie be free. There was no universe that they could be together in the way they were now. One of them would eventually have to fold to make the other happy, and Clover Cookie certainly wasn't going to. Or, well, maybe he could. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to try to understand Licorice Cookie in that way. It was a pretty big part of his identity after all. Oh, what was he even saying… He couldn't join the cookies of darkness, he just couldn't. Tragedy after tragedy had befallen Earthbread by Dark Enchantress Cookie's hand; including the war that had led to Clover Cookie's own orphaning. He couldn't possibly become a cog in that wretched machine.
And yet, here he was, still considering it. Licorice Cookie had said that he'd make sure Clover Cookie wouldn't have to harm others… But could he really stand by and be a complicit, perhaps even supporting, bystander? Was he already complicit in it by choosing to ignore that side of Licorice Cookie? Was Dark Enchantress Cookie really that bad in the first place? She was a part of White Lily Cookie after all. The evil part, sure, but there had to be some good in her. There was some good in every cookie. Plus, when boiled down, her goal was essentially to spread the truth. Cookies were, in fact, made to be eaten. It was a terrible thought. Being created for the sole purpose of dying as a sweet little treat. He couldn't imagine witnessing it first hand. She had been through so much, he couldn't blame her for being a little bitter.
No. No, at a certain point her behavior was unforgivable, no matter how tragic her story. Then again, maybe through joining Licorice Cookie he could show him the error of his ways, so to speak. Convince him to leave his life of evil? A very unlikely and wishful thought, straight out of some cliche romance story. But if Clover Cookie couldn't find it in his heart to let go, he might just have to try...
Clover Cookie stood up from his seat and went to his room. He changed into his pajamas and threw himself into his bed. He sighed, staring at his ceiling. Love was so complicated. It was part of the beauty in it, he supposed, but it didn't make it any less frustrating. Clover Cookie decided he'd done enough thinking for the night. He'd go to bed and write a letter to Licorice Cookie in the morning. He was sure his friend was probably freaking out right about now and would love to put his mind at ease, but it was only fair that he stressed a little too. That and Clover Cookie was positively exhausted.
Clover Cookie pulled the covers up over him and closed his eyes, attempting to put his mind at peace. Ironically, he wished Licorice Cookie was here right now to comfort him, but he was on his own tonight. Might be useful for him to get used to that again...

Chapter 17: Somethings off... Yay!

Notes:

There's a month time skip between this chapter and the last one :p

Chapter Text

Chapter 17: Licorice Cookie POV
.....
Beast yeast… In just a month or so the cookies of darkness would be setting off to Beast Yeast. While, yes, Licorice Cookie did love a good opportunity to serve Dark Enchantress Cookie, and for a change of scenery, but there was one glaring detail that made this whole thing a little less than ideal. Clover Cookie. The trip to see him was already pretty long, and now he'd be on an entire different continent! It'd be completely impossible to see him, ever. And with the amount of chaos they were hoping to bring, who's to say he'd get the chance to after?
It had been a month or so since Licorice cookie had directly asked Clover Cookie to join the cookies of darkness, though he had hinted at it a bit from time to time. He figured that now was as good a time as any to ask him officially once more. Because it was either he joined him or he could say goodbye. At least then Licorice Cookie would have some time to grieve. Still, a terrible thought. The only cookie who had truly cared for him, gone. Just like that. He couldn't let that happen.
He sat at his desk and grabbed a leaf of paper. He started writing a letter, asking Clover Cookie if he could come over to talk, as just showing up unannounced was not only rude but unreliable as of late. Licorice Cookie had found that after he had taught Clover Cookie that object teleportation spell, he was rarely at home anymore. Always traveling or what not. It seemed as if before he was only waiting around just in case Licorice Cookie happened to stop by. Licorice Cookie found that incredibly sweet, but he was glad that Clover Cookie was able to be free as he liked now. And it made him feel a bit guilty that he was about to ask him to give it up for him again.
Licorice Cookie shook that thought out of his head and sent the letter off. Now all he could do is wait for a response, which could take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour to 3 days. It all depended on where Clover Cookie was at that moment in time. It'd be so much easier if he just had a phone like a normal cookie, but he was all "natural" and "whimsical" and "old fashioned". Sometimes Licorice Cookie loved that about him, but this was not one of these times. He waited for a bit in his room, hoping that Clover Cookie would respond sooner rather than later. Luckily, a little sheet of paper appeared in his hand only about ten minutes later.
Licorice Cookie read the note to himself in his head:
“Sure! I'd love to meet up with you! I'm currently at home for a few days so you can pop by whenever. I look forward to your arrival, dearest :)”
That was pretty much the response he expected. Though it only fed the guilt eating him up inside. Clover Cookie was so excited to see him, and Licorice Cookie was going to give him such a terrible ultimatum. But it would be good for them! Clover Cookie would be able to join him and experience the true power of the darkness! Which would be much better for him than being all goody-goody and whatever else, right?
The next day Licorice Cookie made the trip to Clover Cookie's house just as he often did. Though he was very nervous. While that was not a foreign feeling for him when it came to Clover Cookie, it was one that had loosened its grip on him over time. But now it was back in full force. Heart racing, palms sweating, his hands shaking as he knocked on the door, the works.
“Licorice Cookie you're here!” Clover Cookie grinned cheerfully as he opened the door. He welcomed Licorice Cookie with a brief but blissful kiss on the lips.
Licorice Cookie was glad that the conflicting feelings and upset over the whole recruitment thing seemed to be short lived. Clover Cookie had so much love in his heart, there probably wasn't any room for even a teensy tiny drop of hate. Oh, he really didn't want to ruin this.
Clover Cookie smiled as he took in the world around him, a spark of wonder in his eye, “Another bright sunny day! Perhaps it's a sign of the future to come..”
“Speaking of the future,” Licorice Cookie said, taking advantage of this perfect segway opportunity, “I have some really really bad news.”
“Oh my, what's wrong?”
“Uhm… well I've been informed that me and the other cookies of darkness are going on a trip. A probably very long trip far far away. To Beast Yeast. So I probably won't be able to see you for a long time. Unless of course you join us, which of course I won't force you to. But y'know if you don't-”
“We'll be separated forever…” Clover Cookie finished his sentence. He placed a gentle hand on Licorice Cookie’s cheek, a profound sadness displayed on his face.
“Yeah… I'm really sorry.”
“Oh it's not your fault. Don't be sorry.”
“I know, but I hate to make you feel like this…”
“It's just a stroke of bad luck I suppose. Very bad luck. But we can't lose hope. Surely there's something we can do!”
“I mean I weighed all my options, there's not much.”
“I mean, can't we use that teleportation spell you taught me?”
“That's really only meant for eh, non living things. When you're teleporting cookies it gets a lot more complicated and risky. I don't really want to take chances with you. Especially since you're such a beginner in magic.” That and Licorice Cookie wasn't particularly good at it either, but there was no need to disclose that.
“Oh. I see. Coming with you is my only real option…”
“Yeah…”
Clover Cookie ran his hands through his hair and let out an anxious breath, contemplating this information, “Oh dear. What to do, what to do?”
“I'll come back later, give you some space to figure stuff out.”
Clover Cookie grabbed onto Licorice Cookie's shoulder with a bit too tight of a grip, “No, please don't leave me! A-actually, why don't we take a walk together? Just the two of us on a nice early autumn afternoon? If you're going to leave me soon we should make the most of our final days.”
“Oh, uhm,” Well that was practically his answer right there wasn't it? “Yeah sure, we can take a walk.”
“Splendid, let me grab my things!” Clover Cookie donned his cloak and his hat and then grabbed Licorice Cookie’s hand, his smile bright and wide as ever. Despite, well, everything.
They walked through the quaint little forest, a place Licorice Cookie had become quite accustomed to. The leaves were all turning a nice orange color in preparation for fall, and the air was crisp and fresh. Clover Cookie was uncharacteristically silent, but still hummed some tune as they held hands and made their way to nowhere in particular. It was quite peaceful. Licorice Cookie felt a strange weight in his chest. He would really miss this.
Eventually they circled back around to Clover Cookie's house as the sun had just begun to set. The sky was getting darker much earlier than it used to during the summer. Standing in front of Clover Cookie's house, Licorice Cookie almost wished they could have walked a little longer, even though his legs were totally killing him. Clover Cookie held both of Licorice Cookie's hands now, staring gently at him in the silent ambiance of the woods.
“I'm going with you,” Clover Cookie stated definitively, breaking the silence.
“Wait- you what?”
“I’m going with you,” Clover Cookie repeated, “I realized during our walk that I am much too attached to you now to simply let go. I'm not saying goodbye. Not yet anyway.”
Licorice Cookie could just jump for joy. This was amazing news. “Oh my doughness, really?! You-you mean it?!”
“Yes. I can't lose you just yet.”
Licorice Cookie squeezed Clover Cookie tight, “Oh you won't regret this! The darkness will suit you well, my dear!”
Clover Cookie kissed him on the cheek, “Let me gather my things and we can be off.”
Licorice Cookie released him from his embrace, taken aback at how eager he was, “Woah like- right now?! I was kinda thinking I could pick you up tomorrow or something? Don't you need time to pack? And I need to prepare a room for you and tell the others of your arrival. Plus I'm sure you want to say goodbye to your friends and-”
“Nonsense! Most of my things are still packed up from my last adventure! And if you don't have a room for me, I guess we'll just have to share yours,” Clover Cookie winked as he said that last bit. Or Licorice Cookie was pretty sure he did, but he could only see the one eye so he didn't really know…
“Well, alright then! I'll wait right here for you.”
“Great! See you in just a moment!”
Clover Cookie walked into his house, and Licorice Cookie couldn't help but think something was off. Yes, they had known each other for a longer time now, but surely that couldn't have made Clover Cookie warm up enough to him that he'd do this. The first time he'd asked was the angriest he'd ever seen Clover Cookie! He wasn't that angry but still, the angriest he'd ever seen of him. Probably the angriest he could get, really. Regardless, this was kinda sketchy, but hey, he would take anything he could get.
Clover Cookie emerged from his cottage and tacked a piece of paper to his front door before heading back to Licorice Cookie. They were then on their way.

Chapter 18: Can't Look Back

Chapter Text

Chapter 18: Clover Cookie POV
.......
Clover Cookie took a deep breath as he set off with Licorice Cookie. This was it. He couldn't go back. He'd been contemplating this decision ever since Licorice Cookie had asked him the first time. On one hand, he'd get to see Licorice Cookie everyday and they wouldn't run the risk of him getting in trouble with his master, on the other hand, everything else. He really couldn't justify that decision. But here he was, trying to rack his brain for any sort of excuse he could find to put his mind at ease. He couldn't go back now. He had jumped in head first, as fast as he could, lest the weight of his decision catch up to him. Besides, he wasn't dedicating his life to Dark Enchantress Cookie, he was giving it to Licorice Cookie. Whom he'd only truly known for a month or so. Oh, he was such a fool for him and his charmingly clumsy antics.
“Well, here we are! The Crimson Badlands!” Licorice Cookie announced, “I know it's a bit different than what you're used to, but it'll grow on you, trust me.”
He could say that again. It was very… well, it lived up to its name to say the least. Very crimson, very badland. Not a speck of green to be seen within miles. It smelled of burning, cake, and despair. Further out, Clover Cookie could see what he could only imagine was their destination. A large, imposing, cake-y castle.
“Hey, Clover Cookie, can I make a request?” Licorice Cookie asked.
“Yes, what is it, my dear Licorice Cookie?” Clover Cookie asked, still looking ahead at what lay before them both.
“Heheh, ehm, can we take a break? We've kinda been walking for forever. My legs are practically turning to jelly right about now. Eheh.”
Clover Cookie chuckled, “Oh yes, of course.”
Licorice Cookie took a big sigh of relief and sat on the charred, barren ground. Clover Cookie took a seat beside him. He had to admit he was a bit tired as well. He stretched and yawned, then put an arm around Licorice Cookie.
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with you,” Clover Cookie said, more trying to convince himself than flatter Licorice Cookie.
Licorice Cookie smiled and held the hand that Clover Cookie had put around him, “Yes, as do I! We get to spend every waking moment together. You're going to do great work for Dark Enchantress Cookie; I can taste it!”
“Aha, yes… I sure will…” Clover Cookie stood up and dusted his clothes off, “We should get a move on!”
“But I just sat downnnn!”
“Well I guess I'll just have to carry you.”
Licorice Cookie stood up quickly, “No! No, I'm just fine! Let's be on our way then.”
“Great choice!” Clover Cookie really had to get up and moving. Thinking too much could be quite dangerous right now, and walking away from his problems was what he was best at.
It wasn't long till they reached the castle. The big, dark, menacing, terribly intimidating castle. Clover Cookie desired nothing more than to turn back. But this is what he had chosen. His warm cozy house, the serene woods, cute little woodland creatures and great friends were no more. It was all darkness and death from here. And red. A lot of red. Not that it was a particularly unpleasant shade, it was just a bit excessive.
Licorice Cookie opened the doors and beckoned Clover Cookie inside.
“Pomegranate Cookie! Oh Pomegranate Cookie!!!!” Licorice Cookie called giddily into the big empty, echo-y hallways of the castle. They walked through until they stumbled upon whom Clover Cookie could only assume was Pomegranate Cookie, and one other cookie he couldn't put a name to yet.
“Look who I brought!” Licorice Cookie beamed triumphantly, “Told you I could do it!”
Pomegranate Cookie looked up at Clover Cookie, then back down at him, “I see, you have exceeded my expectations for you… It seems you aren't as pathetic as I thought you were.”
“That's right! You underestimated me! You look pretty dumb right now, hehehe!”
Pomegranate Cookie shook her head disapprovingly, “I'll go tell Dark Enchantress Cookie of his arrival…”
She walked off, but the other cookie came closer to them, looking Clover Cookie up and down. “So you're the cookie he's been writing about… How strange.”
“I'm sorry, strange how exactly?” Clover Cookie asked.
“You're just- how do I put this? Much more pleasing to the eye than I thought you'd be?”
“...And why is that?”
“I just didn't think someone with your looks would settle for…” he wrinkled his nose in disgust, “ Licorice Cookie.”
“Oh. Thank you?”
“I'm Affogato Cookie. It's a pleasure to meet you,” Affogato Cookie smiled mischievously, holding out his hand.
Clover Cookie shook it hesitantly, “I should be off now. Licorice Cookie has much to show me before dinner. Or- do you all eat dinner here? Like- together? Or are you all too evil for that?”
Affogato Cookie laughed, “Oh you're funny! I like you… I'm looking forward to seeing more of you, Clover Cookie.”
He turned and walked away, the sound of his heels clicking against the tile floors echoed through the hall.
Clover Cookie frowned, “Licorice Cookie… your friends don't seem to like you that much.”
“That's because they're not my friends. I detest them just as much as they do me. Now come on, we should get you settled in. You can stay in my room while I get one set up for you. Well- that's if you really wanted to, like you said you did.”
Clover Cookie smiled, he loved how infinitely awkward Licorice Cookie was, “I wouldn't mind at all.”
Licorice Cookie took Clover Cookie’s hand and walked him to his room. It was actually pretty much as Clover Cookie had expected. Dark and spooky, but in an edgy teen sort of way. Lots of posters, black, candles, animal bones (he hoped) and various other things that screamed “please take me seriously!” Licorice Cookie was just adorable..
Clover Cookie sat down on the bed, placing the bag of nearly all his belongings beside him. “I like your room.”
Licorice Cookie hopped up onto the bed as well and held Clover Cookie's hand, “You have great taste!”
Clover Cookie sighed deeply, and laid down. Smiling and still holding Licorice Cookie's hand. “Well you're a bit biased, aren't you?”
Licorice Cookie followed suit and laid down beside him, “Well, maybe a little.”
“Y’know you might not have to get a room set up for me, I'm quite comfortable right here.”
“Oh! Well, I'm not sure about that but-”
“In fact I'm so comfortable I might just skip dinner and fall asleep right now.”
“Oh but you can't! You have to say hi to everyone! Poison Mushroom Cookie is going to be so excited that you're here! They always talk about you. Oh and you just have to meet Dark Enchantress Cookie!”
“I know, I was just joking with you, dear. I do quite like this though. I could get used to it.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” Licorice Cookie smiled, squeezing his hand. They kissed and then laid there for a moment. Taking in the moment that they had to just themselves. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Chapter 19: Dinner time!

Chapter Text

“Clover Cookie!!!” Poison Mushroom Cookie squealed in delight as they ran into Licorice Cookie’s room.
Clover Cookie sat up to face them, “Hello my friend! It's so good to see you again!”
Licorice Cookie got up as well, but in a much less excited manner, “Hey! Get out of my room! You know you're not allowed in here!”
Clover Cookie scooped up the little cookie into his arms, “Oh relax, they're not causing any trouble. They're just excited to see me, isn't that right?”
“Mhm! Reaaaaal excitedddd,” Poison Mushroom Cookie said, clinging onto Clover Cookie.
“Whatever..” Licorice Cookie grumbled.
“Pomegranate Cookie told me to tell you that dinner's readyyy.”
“Well let's be on our way then, yes?” Clover Cookie responded, holding his free hand out for Licorice Cookie to grab.
Licorice Cookie walked past him, brushing off Clover Cookie's offer. He felt kinda bad doing that, but he had to get back into character. Lest he accidentally show weakness in front of the others.
As they walked to the dining hall, Licorice Cookie noticed a familiar tap tap tapping sound.
“You nervous?” Licorice Cookie asked his friend.
Clover Cookie looked to him, a bit surprised by this question. “How could you tell?”
“When you're overwhelmed you tap your arm and stuff like that.”
“Oh. Really? You're quite observant, Licorice Cookie. How sweet.”
“Yes, yes, I know. I'm great. But uhm, what's up with you?”
“...Well, it's not every day you meet the cookie who started the war that killed your parents.”
“Oh,” Licorice Cookie didn't know what to say to that.
Poison Mushroom Cookie held up a shroomie to Clover Cookie’s face, sympathetically. He took it from their hand and stuffed it in his pocket once again. “Thank you, friend.”
Licorice Cookie chewed his fingernails anxiously, trying to figure out what to say. He cleared his throat and spoke, “I'm sorry Clover Cookie, but- but I promise Dark Enchantress Cookie has her reasons! She's amazing, trust me.”
Clover Cookie stayed silent, but nodded.
They reached the dining room in due time. Clover Cookie put Poison Mushroom Cookie down and cheerfully greeted the familiar faces at the table; before Licorice Cookie made him sit down in the seat right next to his. Affogato Cookie slid into the seat beside that. He began to say something, but just then Dark Enchantress Cookie arrived. (Thank the witches) She took her seat at the head of the table.
Licorice Cookie sat up in his seat and cleared his throat, “Ehe, good evening Dark Enchantress Cookie!”
“Yes, hello Licorice Cookie,” Dark Enchantress Cookie nodded, “I understand you've managed to recruit a new member?”
“Eh, yes!” He stood up and gestured for Clover Cookie to do the same, “I humbly present to you, my eh- dearest ally, Clover Cookie.”
Clover Cookie did a little bow, “It's an honor to make your acquaintance, Dark Enchantress Cookie.”
Dark Enchantress Cookie gave an affirmative chuckle, “It's good to meet you too, Clover Cookie. You may sit.”
The two of them sat down just as they were told; and with the arrival of Dark Enchantress Cookie, everyone was free to begin eating.
Affogato Cookie scooted closer to Clover Cookie. He rested his elbows on the table and chin upon his folded hands, “So, Clover Cookie, what skills do you, shall I say, bring to the table?”
Clover Cookie giggled at the pun, “Oh, well, I play music, as you probably know.”
“Yes, I am aware. But surely you have some other skills, do you not? Useful ones?”
“Oh, uhm-”
Licorice Cookie jumped to Clover Cookie’s rescue,“He's a good navigator! And- and he's very handy! And I'm teaching him magic!”
“Really now?” Affogato Cookie leaned in and loudly whispered to Clover Cookie, “If you want real quality lessons on magic I'd be happy to be of service.”
Clover Cookie smiled and shook his head, “I appreciate the offer, but Licorice Cookie is a great teacher! And I'm sure you have much better things to do instead.”
Affogato Cookie shrugged and went back to his meal, “Yes, well, suit yourself.”
Licorice Cookie scowled at Affogato Cookie whilst he wasn't looking. The sass on him was unbelievable. Licorice Cookie couldn't stand him in the slightest. Dark Enchantress Cookie was, of course, without flaw; but he couldn't help but question some of her decisions about the cookies she chose to keep around. Not that he'd ever question her greatness, just- tap tap tap
Licorice Cookie snapped out of his thoughts and looked back to Clover Cookie, who was smiling, but tapping away at the table with his free hand. Licorice Cookie looked around to make sure no one was watching, and slowly moved his hand onto Clover Cookie's discreetly as he could. He wasn't great at comforting others, but he hoped that this conveyed some sort of “it's okay” message to his friend. Clover Cookie relaxed his posture and breathed a small sigh of relief through his nose. Meaning to Licorice Cookie that whatever he did worked, much to his delight. He liked being able to make someone feel at peace for once. Usually he was met with annoyance and disdain. Most cookies weren't nearly grateful enough to be graced with Licorice Cookie's presence nearly as much as this one.
Eventually the meal concluded, and Licorice Cookie walked Clover Cookie back to his quarters.
“Soooo, what do you think?” Licorice Cookie asked, sitting back down on his bed.
Clover Cookie took off his boots and yawned, “I think that I am ready for bed.”
“I meant about Dark Enchantress Cookie! How was your first day, or night rather, as a cookie of darkness?”
Clover Cookie started removing his vest, “Any day with you is a good one, my friend.”
“You hated it didn't you?”
“I never said that,” He folded his vest neatly and placed it near his belongings.
“Well you're dodging my question! You wouldn't do that if you liked it here!”
“I just have to grow accustomed to it, is all. Surely you can understand.”
“I guess that's only fair.”
Clover Cookie nodded and pulled his nightgown out from his bag, “Would you mind closing your eyes, dear?”
“Oh- yeah! Uhm- yes! Yes of course,” Licorice Cookie stuttered, clasping his hands tightly over his eyes. He couldn't believe this was actually happening.
“No peeking,” Clover Cookie hummed as he got changed. After which, he sat down next to Licorice Cookie, “Alright, I'm done.”
Licorice Cookie removed his hands from his eyes, and took a good look at the cookie next to him. He'd seen him in this nightgown before, but he looked just as good as the first time around; perhaps even better now. His bright blue eyes held that lively little twinkle they always did, and his smile shone almost as strongly. On his cheek lay a single white eyelash. Licorice Cookie slowly reached up and grabbed it, his fingers grazing ever so slightly against his companion's soft, warm dough.
“Your hands are quite cold,” Clover Cookie said, holding his own hand up to his cheek.
“Oh, sorry! That's the price you pay with dark magic. Ehm-” he didn't want to elaborate more on that, lest he worry Clover Cookie. He held up the singular snow white lash in-between his pointer finger and his thumb, “You had an eyelash on your- your cheek. Ehm- my mom used to say that you could blow on them and make a wish. Which isn't actually real magic, but it's a cute idea nonetheless.”
“May I?”
“Make a wish? Sure, like I said it's not gonna actually work but-”
Clover Cookie blew gently and watched as the small thing disappeared into the far reaches of the room, never to be seen again. The childlike wonder on his face was not uncommon to see, but always made Licorice Cookie smile. He had to be the most precious cookie in the entire world.
“What did you wish for?” Licorice Cookie asked.
Clover Cookie shook his head, “Ah, if I tell you it won't come true.”
“Well why does it matter? It's not real anyway.”
“Not with that attitude it's not.”
“You are insufferable, you know that?”
“I know, but I just can't risk it,” Clover Cookie kissed Licorice Cookie on the cheek, “I really want that wish to come true.”
“Well now I really wanna know.”
“And I hope someday you will.”

Chapter 20: Slip-up

Clover Cookie's so cornyyy oml 3

Chapter Text

Clover Cookie woke up the next morning, his head laid on Licorice Cookie's chest. His concerningly dull heartbeat and not-so-dull snoring filled the silence of the morning. Clover Cookie was accustomed more so to birdsong at this early hour, but this was a welcome alternative. He laid for a while longer, admiring his other half. Well, “other half” was a bit forward, but he was nothing if not a wishful thinker.
Licorice Cookie awoke, and sat up, much to Clover Cookie's dismay.
Clover Cookie looked up at him, resting his head on one of his hands, “Good morning my dearest Licorice Cookie.”
“Oh, good morning,” he yawned, “I forgot you were uh- here. In my bed. With me,” Licorice Cookie put his hand atop Clover Cookie's head, idly playing with his hair as the reality of his situation slowly dawned on him.
“You never cease to amaze me with your observational skills.”
He grumbled and rolled his eyes, “Whatever.”
Clover Cookie rested his head on Licorice Cookie’s leg and closed his eyes, “I don't want to get up.”
Licorice Cookie continued running his fingers through Clover Cookie’s hair, “I suppose we could sleep in a bit longer until my alarm goes off.”
“Perfect, get back down here.”
Licorice Cookie slid back down, his head hitting the pillow with a soft thump. Clover Cookie resumed his previous position, resting his head and one of his hands on Licorice Cookie's chest. Without his deafening snores, Clover Cookie could hear his soft rattly breaths as his chest rose and fell. It made him a bit worried for his health, but also made him feel at peace. As if Licorice Cookie’s lungs and heart were playing a soft, fragile, and soothing melody that only Clover Cookie had the privilege of hearing.
Licorice Cookie stared up at the ceiling as he spoke, “Maybe I won't get you your own room.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I don't mind sharing my space with you as much as I thought I would. In all honesty, I think I'd miss this. Which sounds so corny, I know, but-”
“I understand. I'd miss this too.”
“Really?”
“Yes, of course. You always seem so surprised when I show you affection.”
“I know. I'm just not used to it yet. It's been a while since I've had like- anything close to uh- this.”
“Then it's a good thing I'm here.”
“I agree.”
They laid in a comfortable peaceful silence, until around ten minutes later an ear bleeding BEEP BEEP BEEP blared from Licorice Cookie's alarm. Said cookie immediately jumped up and turned it off as quick as he could. Clover Cookie reluctantly sat up and rubbed his eyes. He grabbed his things and went to the bathroom as Licorice Cookie changed, just as he did yesterday evening. He brushed his hair, washed his face, the works. Unlike last night he supposed it made more sense for him to change in the bathroom as well as everything else, lest he make things awkward for Licorice Cookie again. After he was done getting ready he made his way back to Licorice Cookie’s little lair.
Clover Cookie knocked on the door, “May I come in?”
“Hi! Ehm- yes I'm ready,” Licorice Cookie said, opening the door to his room.
“You look stunning, my friend,” he was of course wearing the same old robes he always did, but the statement rang true for Clover Cookie nonetheless.
“Oh! Why thank you. Now,” he grabbed Clover Clover Cookie's hand, “come with me, you have much to learn.”
“May I put my things away first, my love?”
Licorice Cookie hastily let go, “Yes, yes! Sorry, I-I got a bit carried away there! I'm just very excited my uhm- eheh my-” he cleared his throat, “my love.”
Clover Cookie's heart soared at his new title. Sure, he called Licorice Cookie things like that all the time; but the reciprocation of such was rarer than anything on all of Earthbread. He thanked Licorice Cookie with a kiss on the cheek then promptly went to put his things back. He didn't want to waste any more of his friend's time.
Just as Clover Cookie turned back to leave, Licorice Cookie spoke, “Oh grab your lute too, I want to try something.”
“On it, dearest!” Clover Cookie was very intrigued. He just loved when Licorice Cookie showed interest in his music.
With that, they were on their way. They walked through the castle till Licorice Cookie stopped in front of a larger wooden door. He opened it and revealed a small library filled to the brim with various sorts of books. Mostly spell books and the like, the natures of which appeared to be morally dubious. Licorice Cookie scanned the shelves methodically, seemingly knowing exactly what he was looking for. He picked out two thick books, struggling to keep them held up with his scrawny arms. Clover Cookie chuckled quietly and tucked one under his own arm to lessen the burden.
“Eh, thank you,” Licorice Cookie nodded, embarrassed, “I could have carried them myself, but I suppose you can help if it makes you happy.”
“Of course, my dear.”
Licorice Cookie shuffled away, beckoning once again for Clover Cookie to follow him. He led Clover Cookie to a meeting room with a large chalkboard on the wall.
“Alright! Are you ready to make some magic?” Licorice Cookie grinned mischievously as he made his way to the large table in the middle of the room. He dropped the book in his hands on the table with a loud slam that made Clover Cookie flinch. “Take any seat you’d like! Well, except for that one. That's eh, Dark Enchantress Cookie’s chair.”
Clover Cookie guessed as much. It was a near 1:1 match with her seat in the dining hall. He placed the book he was holding next to Licorice Cookie’s and sat down in a seat closer to the chalkboard.
Licorice Cookie picked up a piece of chalk and began to scrawl something out in big letters, “Welcome to Magic 101, Clover Cookie! Now, you already know some of the basics, and you are quite a fast learner, I must say. I would however like to attune your magic experience more to your pre-existing skills.” He messily wrote more words on the board, “Now, most magic users have to channel magic through other things, like wands or magic circles or what have you. I, for one, have my scythe for general magic usage, but for bigger spells I do love a good magic circle. Some spells do have some specific requirements but that’s a lesson for another day. For now…” He grabbed one of the books, “While it's not exactly conventional, I found this book written by a cookie who cast spells using music. I thought maybe you’d be interested in that? Given, y’know, you’re you.”
Clover Cookie’s eyes sparkled with delight as he clutched his lute tight, “I would absolutely positively love that! Oh, you’re so thoughtful, Licorice Cookie!”
“Ahem-I uh- yes well- I remembered stumbling upon it when I was first studying magic and I gave it another read and it reminded me of you. I’ve been holding onto it for a while; waiting for the perfect opportunity, eheh...”
“Oh, I love you so much,” Clover Cookie blurted out for the first time. So casually you'd think he'd said it a million times before.
Licorice Cookie’s eyes opened wide. He froze, standing up straight and stiff as a board, his mouth slightly agape, unable to form words. His hands lost his grip on the book and he dropped it directly on his foot, “Aw fudge!” He clutched his foot and seethed in pain, repeating “ow ow ow” over and over under his breath.
Clover Cookie stood up from his chair and held onto Licorice Cookie so he wouldn't fall over. “Oh I’m ever so sorry!”
Licorice Cookie shook his head. “No, no you’re fine!”
“Are you alright?”
Licorice Cookie took a deep breath and put his foot back on the ground, wincing, “Yes, I’m okay. Don’t- eh- don’t worry about it.” He hobbled over to the table and sat up on it, “Now, ahem, where were we? Right, music! As I was saying-”
“We aren’t going to talk about that?” Clover Cookie frowned as Licorice Cookie put his feelings to the side.
“Eheh, t-talk about- eh- talk about what?” Licorice cookie stuttered, avoiding eye contact.
Clover Cookie picked up the book and sat down, “Forget about it. Tell me more about magic, my dear.”
Licorice Cookie continued going on and on about magic, which Clover Cookie happily listened to; even if a little feeling of self doubt started to emerge in the back of his head. He chose to ignore it for the time being.

Chapter 21: Spill the Tea, Sis

Chapter Text

Chapter 21: Clover Cookie POV
.......
Clover Cookie walked through the halls of Dark Enchantress Cookie’s castle, by himself this time. Licorice Cookie had requested some time to himself, so he didn’t really have much to do except wander around aimlessly. All alone with only his thoughts as company. Oh dear, he really hoped he could bump into someone soon. Thankfully, soon came very quickly as he heard the click clack of heels against the stone floor.
“Ah! Clover Cookie, there you are!” Affogato Cookie waved from the end of the hallway.
“Oh! Hello! Affogato Cookie, was it?” Clover Cookie waved back, walking towards the other cookie.
“Yes, yes. ‘Tis I. How have you been? I noticed you and Licorice Cookie were absent from breakfast this morning, what was that about, hm? He’s not starving you is he?”
“What? No, no, he’s just very excited is all. Licorice Cookie really wanted to start my magic lessons as soon as possible. Besides, I don’t eat breakfast all too often anyway, so I don’t mind. Money’s been tight recently so I can’t afford it. Being a traveling musician isn’t exactly lucrative.”
“Well, rest assured that won’t be a problem here. In fact, how would you like to continue this chat over tea?”
“That sounds nice.”
Affogato Cookie ordered a werehound butler, whom Clover Cookie learned was named “Esterhazy”, to get them some tea and treats. Clover Cookie felt bad knowing it would be incredibly easy for him to do it himself, but it was the dessert’s job after all. That, and he didn’t want to reveal how much of a bleeding heart he truly was to any of his new “friends”. Although, if he had really been going through Licorice Cookie’s diary, Affogato Cookie likely had some semblance of an idea already.
Affogato Cookie brought Clover Cookie to the courtyard and a cute little tea tray was brought to them shortly after. Clover Cookie started sipping on his tea, taking in the lack-luster spooky scenery around him.
“So,” Affogato Cookie started as he added a substantial amount of sugar to his drink, “Licorice Cookie isn’t with you. Seems awfully rude of him to abandon you on your first day here.”
“He just needed some alone time,” Clover Cookie shrugged.
“Nothing happened during your lesson?”
“No, it was fine,” Clover Cookie paused, looking down into his tea, “Well, there was one thing.”
“Ooooh, trouble in paradise?”
“Mmm... Don’t tell him I said any of this but… I told him I loved him. I didn’t mean for it to slip out so casually, but it’s not false. I do love him.”
Affogato Cookie came to the conclusion by himself, seemingly reading Clover Cookie like an open book, “He didn’t say it back, did he?”
Clover Cookie frowned, slumping over just a bit, “No. He didn’t.”
“Hm, can’t say I’m surprised. I never saw him being the affectionate type. I give you my sympathies though. I can’t imagine that’s easy on you.”
“It’s not even just that he didn’t say it back. If he just said he wasn’t ready, I can appreciate that. We’ve only been together for just under a month. He didn’t say that though. He didn’t say anything. He just brushed it off and pretended it didn’t happen,” Clover Cookie had completely given up on any sort of secrecy, he needed to share this with someone; and he didn’t exactly have any other friends around to talk to.
“Oh my, how terrible. My deepest apologies,” Affogato Cookie said, putting his hand over his heart sympathetically. He didn’t exactly sound sincere, but he never had in the first place.
“It’s alright. It’s just-”
“Yes?” The other cookie was clearly thriving off this drama.
“What if he really doesn’t love me the same way I love him? I just gave up my whole entire life for him, and if he doesn’t even like me enough to acknowledge my feelings at all, then I left everything I loved about my old life for nothing and I’m an utter fool.”
“Well you’re in love with Licorice Cookie, that last one is a given,” Affogato cookie chuckled. He put his tea down and looked at Clover Cookie with a more serious, but gentle expression, “I’m sure he’s quite fond of you though.”
“How do you know?”
“You are the only cookie I think I’ve ever seen him treat, mmm, non-abrasively, so to speak. Plus I’ve made the terrible mistake of reading his diary. Juicy as the details may be, they’re also disgustingly in-depth. I know just about every horribly sappy thing he’s thought about you… I suppose it’s just my due karma.”
“I see. Well, that’s- uhm, comforting to know. Thank you, friend.”
“Ah, best not to be too hasty with that title in this place, you know. You’ll get yourself hurt. You’re lucky I’m not one to take advantage of others, friend,” Affogato Cookie smiled sinisterly, his tone completely in opposition to his words.
Clover Cookie looked away from him. He had made a horrible mistake confiding in this cookie, hadn’t he? Oh well, he couldn’t exactly take anything back now. Maybe if he played his cards right, he could become an actual friend of this cookie; or maybe he’d just get incredibly hurt. Clover Cookie didn’t actually see any outcome in the current situation he was in that would end up in him becoming unscathed in the first place, so no harm in trying.
“What other things has he said about me?” Clover Cookie asked, attempting to cater to this cookie’s obvious taste for rumors, and his own curiosity.
Affogato Cookie’s smile changed to that of a more mischievous nature rather than a malicious one, “Oh where do I begin?”

Chapter 22: Licorice Cookie POV
......
Licorice Cookie gently shut his door in Clover Cookie's face, taking in a deep sigh of relief. He did really like spending time with that cookie but a little space, just for an hour or so to recoup, was definitely a need. His brain was especially fried after all that talking. He still hadn't gotten used to someone just listening to him. Though, even with that in mind, Clover Cookie had been very quiet. Usually he'd ask some questions or at least give a little “oooh” or “mmm, I see” here and there, but he had been completely silent. Well, after he had said that. Clover Cookie had seemed quite cheerful before he'd said he loved Licorice Cookie.
Licorice Cookie slid down onto the floor with his back against the wall, closing his eyes and resting his head against his knees. He frowned as he thought about that whole fiasco, short as it had been. He was sure he had done something entirely wrong, he just wasn't sure what.
“Er- Meowster?” Licorice Cookie heard a familiarly grating voice say from behind his door.
“What is it, Batcat? I'm busy,” Licorice Cookie responded.
“Mmm, I saw Clover Cookie walking a-meow-nd by himself… Is everything okay?”
“I just needed some time to myself, he said it was okay.”
“He did nya-t look ‘okay’. He looked quite sad.”
Licorice Cookie opened his door a smidge and peeked out at his pet, “He did?”
“Nyes, what happened?”
Licorice Cookie opened the door wide enough for Batcat to slip in, closing the door behind him. He crawled into Licorice Cookie's lap and looked up at him, expectantly.
Licorice Cookie started petting Batcat and looked up at the ceiling, “I think he's embarrassed.”
“Why is that, Meowster?”
“Well, okay, I'm teaching him magic so he can better serve Dark Enchantress Cookie, right? And- and I found this book that I thought he'd find useful and I was talking about it and he- he uh, said he loved me. So I sorta panicked and everything was such a mess, but I know he didn't mean to say it so I tried to just move on and spare him the awkwardness. I guess he's still embarrassed about it.”
Batcat sat up and swatted Licorice Cookie's hand away, “I'm sorry, your boyfriend declared his love for you and you didn't say anything back?!”
“Well yeah! He didn't mean to say it, I didn't want to make him feel bad! And- and he's not my boyfriend!”
“...He's nya-t?”
“No! Sure I like him a lot and I'm so glad he's here with me now, but he's not my boyfriend! That's way too serious.”
“Meow wait one second, allow me to catch up here. Clover Cookie mew-ved in with you and said he loved you, but you don't think he's serious about you?”
“He- well- y'know- when you put it like that...”
“Meowster, I don't think he's embarrassed. I think he me-ight be upset that you don't return his feelings.”
“But I do! I do love him… I mean, I think-”
“Then why didn't mew say anything!?”
“I told you! He's Clover Cookie, he does big romantic gestures, he's not casual like that! I assumed he didn't mean for things to come out like how they did so I just- decided to ignore it altogether...”
“Are we seeing the problem here?”
Licorice Cookie buried his face in his hands, “Yeah I can hear it now…”
Batcat hopped off Licorice Cookie’s lap, "You better go nya-fter him and tell him you love him right meow!”
“But-”
“No ‘but’s’ Meowster! Go!”
Licorice Cookie stood up and opened his door, “Fine, I'll go find him, but you need to work on your cat-titude mister.”
Licorice Cookie huffed and then went to search for Clover Cookie. He wandered around for longer than he’d have liked, but knew he was in the right place when he heard laughter. That addictively sweet laughter that made Licorice Cookie’s heart flutter in his chest. He walked out into the courtyard, where Clover Cookie indeed was. Along with a certain other cookie that Licorice Cookie liked much less…
“Affogato Cookie?! You're hanging out with Affogato Cookie?!” Licorice Cookie exclaimed, rushing over and angrily gesturing at the cookie sitting beside his friend.
“Hello, Licorice Cookie,” Affogato Cookie said, taking a sip of tea.
“You get out of here! He shouldn't be hanging out with a snake like you!”
“Whatever could you mean? We've been having a great time, haven't we, Clover Cookie?” Affogato Cookie said with that stupid smug look on his face.
Clover Cookie looked down and smiled faintly, “Yes, it's been nice getting to know you.”
Licorice Cookie scowled, “Begone with you! I need to have a talk with Clover Cookie! Alone! Go away!”
“Alright, alright, no need to be so brash. I'll be off. Bye Clover Cookie. I'll see you around,” Affogato Cookie smiled and waved goodbye, lingering just a bit too long before turning to leave.
Licorice Cookie glared at him as he left, promptly taking up his seat next to Clover Cookie, “I don't know how you can stand that guy.”
“Funny, he said the same thing about you,” Clover Cookie joked. He looked over at Licorice Cookie, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
Licorice Cookie nervously folded his hands, and looked away, “Look, I uhm, I wanted to say sorry. For earlier.”
“Licorice Cookie, it's really okay. I understand.”
“It's not okay, I made you upset! Look- as- as cool and perfect as I am, I know I mess up sometimes. A lot of times. Especially at this stuff. So, I'm sorry for hurting your feelings.”
Clover Cookie placed his hand on Licorice Cookie's, “I accept your apology. Thank you.”
“I- ehm- I love you too, for what it's worth. Or I'm pretty sure I do. It's at least the closest I've ever felt to love; I- I think. I just uhm- y'know, I'm just going to- to uh stop talking now.”
Clover Cookie snickered and gave Licorice Cookie a peck on the cheek, “Oh Licorice Cookie, never change,” he rested his head on Licorice Cookie's shoulder, “I love you.”
“Eheh, you uh, wanna grab lunch? I'm kinda hungry.”
“That's a lovely idea, just let me clean up Affogato Cookie and I’s little tea party.”
“You don't have to, I can get someone else to clean it up.”
“I know, I just feel bad… I'm capable of doing these sorts of things myself.”
“Heheh, you're weird.”
“Whatever you say, my dear.”

Chapter 23: Clover Cookie POV
......

“Clover Cookie, oh Clover Cookie!!!” Licorice Cookie called out as he burst into his room.
Clover Cookie turned his head from the window to look at him, “Hello my dear, you seem excited. What's the occasion?”
Licorice Cookie giddily jumped onto the bed and tightly grasped Clover Cookie's hands in excitement, “Guess what!!!” Clover Cookie opened his mouth to say something but Licorice Cookie cut him off, “Oh I'll just tell you! Dark Enchantress Cookie has given us a very important mission before our departure to beast yeast!”
Uh oh. “She has?”
“Mhm! Mhm!”
“What is it?”
Licorice Cookie paused and his smile went from a grin to more of a nervous grimace, “Well- uhm- don't get mad. She kinda sorta wants us to kidnap someone.”
Clover Cookie took his hands back and scooted a teensy bit away, “Licorice Cookie you promised I wouldn't have to hurt anybody…”
“I know, I know, but c’monnn, it'll be fun!”
“I don't find kidnapping people ‘fun’ Licorice Cookie.”
“Okay fun was the wrong word, but please just hear me out. Look, this Butter Roll Cookie guy isn't exactly the most upstanding member of society in the first place, if you know what I mean. He's got a whole mad scientist schtick going on. Plussss, we don't necessarily have to do anything to physically harm him. I was thinking you could do that sleeping spell? Put your magic practice to use? Hmmmmm? Sounds like a pretty good deal, right?”
“Well, if your heart’s really set on it…” Clover Cookie said, attempting to entertain the idea.
“Yes! Yessss! Oh we're going to do great together, darling!” Licorice Cookie exclaimed with pure glee. He wrapped Clover Cookie up in a tight hug and kissed him with uncharacteristic fervour.
Clover Cookie placed his hands loosely on Licorice Cookie’s waist as he leaned into the kiss. He broke away and giggled, “Oh my! It’s nice to see you so excited about something!”
“I'm so happy you're finally trying to embrace the darkness!” Licorice Cookie squealed in delight, his face-splitting grin straining to hold back now ecstatic he was.
“Only for you, my love.”
“I'll take it!” he tackled Clover Cookie down onto the bed, giddily kicking his feet back and forth from on top of him, “Oh I just love you so much!”
Clover Cookie brought one of his hands up to gently caress Licorice Cookie's cheek, “I love you too, my sweet.”
Licorice Cookie’s face went warm (well, relatively speaking). He sat up and cleared his throat, “We better start getting ready for bed. The sooner we sleep, the sooner we get to make Dark Enchantress Cookie proud!”
Clover Cookie sat up as well, crossing his legs and resting his hands on his lap, “I'll wait for you. I got ready while you were in your meeting.”
Licorice Cookie looked Clover Cookie over, “Oh! That you did, eheh.” He got up and sheepishly peeked over his shoulder as he stepped over to his wardrobe, “Ca- can you step out for a second?”
“Oh! Oh yes of course, sorry my dear,” Clover Cookie hopped up from his spot and headed to the door. He walked out and, silently as possible, closed the door behind him. He leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, humming to himself as he waited.
The long halls were even more cold, dark, and menacing during the night, something Clover Cookie didn't think was possible. There were red-flamed torches sparsely lining the walls but any light they gave off was swallowed by the void-like hallway; barely making a dent in Clover Cookie’s unease. It didn't help that it was also completely silent, spare from the sound of Licorice Cookie shuffling around in his room. He closed his eyes, and thought of his old home. The greenery, the warm cozy fireplace, the ambient noises of the forest, the fresh air that didn't coat his lungs in dust and make his chest feel heavy with despair. His heart ached to return, which was a rare feeling for him. Usually he desired nothing more than to travel and be anywhere but home, but this lair was infinitely more stifling than that old cottage. He wondered why on Earthbread he agreed to this.
“Alright, I'm done,” Licorice Cookie said, opening his door.
Clover Cookie opened his eyes and looked over at him. Ah yes, this was why. He observed his partner for a moment. His pajamas carried a much different, more modern vibe compared to his normal robes. A blank white t-shirt and cute little black fleece pajama pants with cartoon skulls on them. It made Clover Cookie feel a bit over dressed if he was feeling completely honest; with all the lace, bows, and frills on his old fashioned nightgown. Maybe he'd get some new pajamas to match before they left for Beast Yeast… Licorice Cookie had after all gotten him some new, as he had put it, “more evil” clothes to better blend in, perhaps pj’s were in order too. They did look very good on Licorice Cookie after all.
“You- uh, alright?” Licorice Cookie asked when Clover Cookie didn't respond.
Clover Cookie shook his head, coming back into reality, “Yes! Yes, I'm alright. Let's get to bed now and all that.”
“Well, if you say so.”

Chapter 24: Clover Cookie POV
.....
Clover cookie lay awake in bed, unable to fall asleep. He sat up and looked out the window with a heavy sigh. He was going to absolutely loathe tomorrow. On one hand seeing Licorice Cookie filled with such immense joy made Clover Cookie feel so very happy in his own right. On the other hand, did it have to be about something like this? Sure, no violence was going to be involved, but still, kidnapping cookies is pretty heinous. Clover Cookie felt like his very dough was being torn apart from this never ending back and forth. All this fighting within his own psyche induced quite the migraine.
“What on Earthbread have I gotten myself into?” Clover cookie mumbled to himself as he rubbed his temples.
“What?” Licorice Cookie mumbled, still mostly asleep.
“It's nothing, dear,” Clover Cookie whispered.
Licorice Cookie closed his eyes and snuggled closer to Clover Cookie, "Go back to sleep.”
“Bold of you to assume I was asleep in the first place…” Clover Cookie said under his breath.
“What was that?”
Clover Cookie laid back down and turned away, “Nothing, nothing.”
Licorice Cookie clung onto him from behind, “Goodnight.”
“Yes, sleep well dear.”
Clover Cookie stared at the wall for a while. Sleep failing to find him until his brain was completely exhausted of all its energy. Clover Cookie then awoke the next morning to the sensation of being poked violently in the face. How lovely.
“Clover Cookie, wake up!” Licorice Cookie said, panicked.
“Five more minutes,” he groaned sleepily, rolling over.
“No! No more minutes! We're going to be late!”
Clover Cookie sat up and yawned, “Must we leave so early?”
“Maybe you shouldn't have stayed up last night!” Licorice Cookie threw Clover Cookie's outfit at him, “Now c'mon, get dressed, chop chop!”
Clover Cookie frowned at him. He pulled his nightgown over his head and lazily started changing into his new clothes.
“Gah! You’re going too slow! Here let me help you-” Licorice Cookie snatched Clover Cookie's clothes back and hastily helped him get dressed.
“There!” Licorice Cookie said as he finished tying Clover Cookie's skirt tightly around his waist, “Now, come on! Schwartzwalder and Batcat are already waiting for us!”
Clover Cookie grabbed his lute and followed Licorice Cookie out the door without a peep. He wasn't exactly sure what just happened there or why Licorice Cookie was so comfortable getting so “up close and personal" all of a sudden, but he didn't exactly mind. He stuffed that aside for now as he walked with Licorice Cookie to meet up with their friends.
They traveled for what was probably a very long time, but as long as he was with his friends, hours passed by like seconds to Clover Cookie. He was quite surprised that the sun was already setting when they reached their destination. A small, very well hidden laboratory in practically the middle of nowhere.
Licorice Cookie stood up straight and cleared his throat, “Alright team, we're here! Remember the plan, we have to be QUIET and COVERT. This is Clover Cookie's first mission so we can not mess this up!”
“Meowby you shouldn't be yelling at the top of your lungs then, Meowster?” Batcat suggested, perched atop Clover Cookie's shoulder.
“I- well we aren't in there yet! So- so shh!”
They entered the building and snuck around as discreetly as they could, until they discovered the main lab in the basement. There their target stood, working with some questionable looking, and foul smelling, concoctions with a cheerful smile. Licorice Cookie nudged Clover Cookie with his arm, signaling for him to cast the spell. Clover Cookie nodded and positioned his lute in order to play. He hovered his hand over the strings and- oh no. Oh no, oh no.
“What's taking you so long?” Licorice Cookie whispered.
Clover Cookie gulped anxiously, “I forgot.”
“You forgot the spell?!”
“My memory's not good under pressure! And I didn't exactly have time to practice it! I've only ever used it once to put Poison Mushroom Cookie to sleep!”
Licorice Cookie took a deep breath, trying to keep his temper in check, “It's fine! No- no it's fine we can just-”
“Why hello there! You're not supposed to be here!” Butter Roll Cookie said, peering around the corner they were hiding behind.
Acting entirely on instinct, Clover Cookie swung his lute into the back of the stranger's head with a loud THWACK that resounded through the facility. He fell down to the ground, hitting his head, alongside the pieces of Clover Cookie's now very broken instrument. The group was stunned into silence.
Well, except for Choco Werehound Brute, “YEAH! That was brutal!”
Clover Cookie didn't find this situation nearly as cool. He fell to his knees and started to hyperventilate. Oh what had he done… what had he done?
Licorice Cookie rushed to his side bringing him into his arms, “Hey, hey, it's okay! He's probably still alive! Eh, right, Batcat?”
Batcat put his ear up to their victim's chest, “Nya-ffirmative, Meowster! He's still breathing!”
“See? It's okay! You were just uhm- protecting us! That's right! How virtuous you are! Eheh…”
Clover Cookie rested his head on Licorice Cookie's chest and shook his head, still staring wide eyed at the unconscious body in front of him. He attempted to slow his breathing, to no avail. He was such a horrible cookie…
Licorice Cookie gestured for Choco Werehound Brute to take care of the body as he tried to calm Clover Cookie down. He turned Clover Cookie’s head away from the scene and started stroking his silky white hair, “Hey, hey, it's alright. We did exactly what we were assigned to do! That's great! Usually things don't go this straight forward for me! Plus, this stuff's gonna happen all the time, you'll get used to it, I promise.”
Clover Cookie's mouth began to tremble as tears welled up in his eyes.
“No! No! Don't cry! Uhm- uh- look, why don't we pick up the pieces that broke off your lute, okay? You wanna focus on that instead?”
Clover Cookie shakily sat up and nodded. He started picking up the shards one by one, very clearly trying so hard to keep it together. When he had collected them all, he stood up and cradled the pieces in his arms. He was silent, staring blankly at the ground.
Licorice Cookie hesitantly put his hand on Clover Cookie's shoulder, “Are you… ready to go?”
Clover Cookie’s eyes stayed fixed on his reflection on the shiny tile floor as he nodded. Licorice Cookie pushed him out of there, where they escaped that whole situation under the cover of night. Silently for once.
Not a single word nor tune was heard from Clover Cookie the whole way home. Nor did he say anything when they arrived back at Dark Enchantress Cookie’s lair. He made his way to Licorice Cookie’s room while the other three went to inform Dark Enchantress Cookie of their “success”. Clover Cookie closed the door behind him and laid his hat, and what was left of his lute on Licorice Cookie's desk. He yanked off his boots and made his way over to the bed. He leaned his head against the cold stone wall, closing his eyes. Clover Cookie took a deep breath in, and a deep breath out; a deep breath in and- and he couldn't hold it in anymore.
He curled up into a ball and buried his face in his knees. Tears soaked into his brand new stockings as his body heaved up and down with every sob. He hated this. He hated this horrid building, this horrid job, and most of all how he had no one else to blame for this situation than his own horrid self. He was so selfish. Love was no excuse for any of this, and yet he just couldn't let go of it. Something was so very deeply wrong with him.

Chapter 25: Licorice Cookie POV
.....
“Ehm- knock, knock!” Licorice Cookie said dorkishly as he opened the door. He slowly and awkwardly stepped over to the bed and slid up carefully beside Clover Cookie, “Hi. Uhm- I thought you should know Butter Roll Cookie is awake now! Doing just fine. Eh, unfortunately. He's very annoying.”
Clover Cookie said nothing to him, but shifted away as he tried to rein in his tears. Licorice Cookie felt truly horrible about all this. He had been trying to tailor everything to Clover Cookie’s pacifist tastes, and somehow still, in true Licorice Cookie fashion, everything that could go wrong had gone wrong. Even though he had just received actual praise from Dark Enchantress Cookie, he couldn't even enjoy it! He should have reminded Clover Cookie to write the spell down or something. He was just so excited and caught up in the moment he forgot to think about the actual important stuff. He was such a screw up…
Licorice Cookie sighed sadly, “I'm sorry things didn't go the way they were supposed to. But everything is okay now, right? Everyone's in one piece, and we've earned Dark Enchantress Cookie’s favor! Your lute’s a bit busted up but we can fix it!”
Still no response.
Licorice Cookie reached over and tucked some of Clover Cookie's hair behind his ear, revealing one of his bright blue eyes, all red and puffy from crying, “Is there anything I can do for you?”
“Don’t worry about me, Licorice Cookie. It's not your fault,” Clover Cookie sniffled, leaning into Licorice Cookie's touch, “It’s all my fault… I'm so terrible…”
“No you're not! Sure, you forgot one thing, but that's not the end of the world! I forget lots of things, and have much less success than you had. Don't beat yourself up over it.”
Clover Cookie inched closer and rested his head on Licorice Cookie's shoulder, “Don't put yourself down for my sake please.”
“Sorry. I just- I'm trying to say that you did just fine today. How about we do something special tomorrow to cheer you up? Just the- just the two of us?”
“I almost crumbled someone today, Licorice Cookie! I don't deserve ‘cheering up’.”
“So you almost accidentally crumble one cookie cuz he spooked you. I've actually crumbled like- so many cookies! Mostly on purpose! You think I still deserve nice stuff, so why don't you?”
Clover Cookie chuckled and wiped his face, “I- I suppose when you say it like that I sound quite silly don't I?”
“A little,” Licorice Cookie smiled in relief at Clover Cookie's change in demeanor, “But there's no shame in that either.”
Clover Cookie took a deep, heavy breath to steady himself and laid a hand on Licorice Cookie's leg, “Thank you.”
Licorice Cookie awkwardly patted Clover Cookie's hand, “Ehm, yes! Of course. Now, my uhm- my darling, you should probably get some rest. You've had a rough couple of days. I don't think you slept at all last night now that I think about it…”
“Yes yes, I suppose I should,” he laid down and looked back up at Licorice Cookie, “Would you care to join me?”
“Oh, no I'm not tired just yet. Plus y'know, dinner's soon and I'd like to rub our victory in Pomegranate Cookie’s face some more and all that. So, I'll leave you some time to yourself to relax in peace and quiet. Sounds good, right?”
Clover Cookie’s mouth curled downward into a small pout, “Right.”
“Aw don't- don't look at me like that. I'll be back!”
“Yes, but parting with you never gets any easier. Minutes pass by like eons when you're not by my side.”
“Stop ittt! You're being way too cheesy. Bleh, gross.”
“Ah, if you truly had a problem with that you would have left ages ago.”
“Rats, you uh- ya caught me. Eheh.”
“Now, shoo. Abandon me to tend to your villainous affairs. I'll be counting every second till you return, my dearest other half,” Clover Cookie sighed, clutching his heart melodramatically.
Licorice Cookie chuckled and nudged him playfully, “Seriously, stop it! I can't stand you sometimes!” He stood up and walked to the door, stopping to turn back and look at Clover Cookie, “I'll be back soon. Don't miss me too much, m’kay?”
“Mmm, no promises.”
“Oh, whatever. Farewell, Clover Cookie. Get some sleep for me, okay?”
“I will. Goodbye, my dearest Licorice Cookie.”
“Goodbye, sweet dreams. I love you,” Licorice Cookie said, dragging this out as long as possible.
“I love you too.”
“Okay, goodbye. Wait, actually, did you want me to-”
Clover Cookie waved him out of the room, “Ah, shoo! Get out of here already!”
“Alright, alright!” Licorice Cookie opened the door and stepped out, waving one last goodbye before he closed the door. Oh how he loved that cookie…
