Work Text:
Etho enjoyed being invited to things. As his head bounced up and down to the rhythm of his feet he lit up at finding a piece of treasure worth two thousand.
He picked it up with his beam and carefully brought it to the cart.
“Good job Etho!” Gem cheered.
He laughed. “I’m doing all the work here. What are you guys doing?”
“Scar is trying not to die.” Grian deadpanned. His eyes were turned into a frustrated expression as the robot in question was heard screaming down the hall.
Etho chuckled.
“Breakable, breakable, breakable!” Impulse teased.
Gem gave him a look as he placed a plate in the cart. “Good heads up. It’s almost like my strategy works.”
“I didn’t say anything.” He said.
“It was all in the tone.” Gem rolled her eyes. She grabbed the cart and began moving it into the next room.
“I just like the way you say it!” Impulse followed her.
Etho snickered and headed down the hall where Scar was. He spotted the robot collapsed into a ball under a table, he made himself small and hid next to him. “What are you hiding from?” He whispered.
“Nothing.” Scar said miserably. “He went into the other room.”
Etho looked where Scar turned. “Which monster was it?”
“Uh, well… I dunno.” Scar said. “It was a new one.”
“I’m going to go check it out.” He said.
“Playing with fire Etho?” Scar asked surprised.
“Of course.” He chuckled. “I didn’t come here to be safe.”
Scar laughed and followed him out from under the table. “I think I need to check in with Grian before I find another monster. He said I don’t contribute enough! Can you believe that?!”
“Crazy.” Etho commented. “You killed two last time.”
“Exactly!! Oh my god I’m going to remind him about that.” Scar said as he walked off. “I contribute! Where would we be without all the money I bring in!”
Etho chattered his mouth in amusement as he went in the direction the monster was in. He wondered what he’d find, it wasn’t like Scar gave him any level of a description. Would it be like the floating head? The knife lady? Or maybe it was closer to the laser guy.
He travelled down a few pathways following the ominous sounds that indicated he was heading in the right direction.
He turned the corner and immediately shrunk into his smaller form. Rolling into a corner and watching the big green creature walk away from him he squinted at its features. It wore clothes and when it turned its head it had a big snout that sniffed the air. It’s eyes locked onto him. What?! How did it know where he was?! He hadn’t made a sound-
It grunted and headed towards him. “Wait!” He yelped as he rolled towards the door.
“That’s not how this works mate.”
Etho froze. “Did you just-?”
It grabbed him around the neck as he was turning his head, it squeezed and the next second Etho had exploded into a million pieces.
-----
Impulse was laughing as Etho got revived. “Find Scar’s monster?” He asked.
“Yeah…” Etho stepped off the extraction point as Skizz sat in the cart next to the gold. “You guys go ahead. I need to double check something.”
“See you at the next revival!” Skizz said.
“I can’t believe you two died and I didn’t.” Scar commented.
“Don’t brag before you get to the final round.” Grian said.
“I can and I will!” Scar sing-songed.
-----
Etho found the monster again. He collapsed into his small form and observed the creature. It had tusks, brown hair with a green streak in it and pointed ears. It lifted its nose in the air but hadn’t noticed him yet. Etho looked up and found there were shelves he could climb.
He checked the creature’s position then started parkouring up. The monster spotted him and grinned.
“Enjoyed dying so much the first time?” It taunted.
Etho paused out of its reach. “You recognise me?”
It snorted. “Foolish little robot, I can see your colours just fine. What’s with the one red eye? None of the other bots have that.”
Etho stared at the creature. No monster had ever been able to talk, no monster ever bothered picking the robots apart from one another.
“My name is Etho.” He said. He didn’t know what possessed him to share his name but as the beast moved closer he shifted back into his full height. “And you are?”
It snorted. “Why do names matter? I will kill you all the same.”
It was in no hurry to reach up and prove to the both of them that the white robot was out of reach.
“Humour me.” Etho said.
The creature smirked and tilted its head. “Joel.” He said.
“That’s a common name.” Etho said in surprise.
“Maybe I’m lying.” The monster said. “Maybe I chose the name I hear the most from my victims.”
Etho chuckled letting his head fly back in amusement. “I don’t think so.” He said.
The monster smiled. “Joel Smallishbeans.” He corrected. “Does that name sound better to you?”
“It makes more sense.” Etho conceded. He snickered. “You aren’t small though.”
The beast puffed its chest. “No.”
“Bigbeans Joel.” Etho said happily.
“Big and mighty.” Joel flexed his arms.
Etho looked over him more closely. “You look strong.” He noted.
“I killed you easily.” Joel reminded. “Your metal is soft and weak.”
Etho tried to ignore how disturbing that was to hear about his exoskeleton. He was resistant to a lot of things, it was why he was sent in here with his friends instead of a more mortal human being.
“How did you spot me before?” He asked. “I didn’t make a sound and you definitely didn’t see me.”
Joel took a big inhale. “You smell strongly of oil.”
“That’s… ok.” Etho said. “I’m hurt by that comment.” He jested. “Are you saying I’m smelly?”
“Stinky.” Joel snorted. “You’re a horrible smelling robot.”
Etho huffed. “Maybe you’re the smelly one.”
“How would you know.” Joel tilted his head, he pointedly looked at his face where a nose was supposed to be.
Etho opened his mouth in offense. “I- You look like you would be smelly.”
“Thanks.” Joel frowned at him. “Are you calling me ugly on top of everything?”
“I would never.” Etho rattled his mouth as he moved along the ledge. “You are strong and mighty remember?”
“And you are soft and weak.” Joel smiled with his tusks.
Etho’s eyes turned to their happy setting.
-----
“Ethooo! Where do you keep running off to? Every time it’s this map you disappear on us-“ Impulse froze as he rounded the corner.
Etho didn’t look at him since he was very carefully positioning a necklace to fall around Joel’s neck.
“There…” He said.
Joel snorted and glared at the new intruder.
“I think the gold looks good on you.” Etho praised.
“Obsessed much?” Joel said.
“You’re the one who keeps complaining when I don’t come to you first thing.” Etho muttered.
“That won’t be a problem for much longer.” Joel growled as he stared at the yellow robot.
Etho finally looked at him. “Hey Impulse!” He greeted cheerily.
Impulse glanced between his friend and the monster with little taps of his feet as he turned. “Etho… I think you bit off more than you can chew.”
Gem rounded the corner and her eyes widened. “Oh.”
“Yeah.” Impulse replied.
“Canadian kindness isn’t supposed to be that strong.” She commented.
“I don’t know what you mean.” Etho said. He looked up at Joel and got his attention by lifting and dropping the gold chain with his beam. The monster turned his gaze to him. “Boat boys look after each other right?”
“Yeah.” Joel huffed.
“So can you not hurt my friends?” Etho asked. “That would make me sad.”
Joel grinded his teeth and glared at the other robots in the room. “Killing them would be fun.”
“Maybe you can help us kill the other monsters?” Etho offered. “I know you don’t like that screaming guy-“
Joel smiled. “He’s fun to murder.”
“I’d like to see that.” Etho bounced happily across the room. “Let’s go find him?”
Joel stood up and followed Etho towards his friends. They skittered out of his way and he sniffed the air until he got the scent of their target.
“You robots all smell.” He complained. The oil irritated his nose but Etho’s smile calmed him down a little.
“I bet it’s not that bad.” He said.
“No really.” Joel insisted. “You should find another way to stay alive.”
“For you Joel I might.” Etho said. “When I go to the shops next I’ll use my hard earned money to buy the alternative stuff.”
Joel chuckled. “My hero.” He said sarcastically.
Etho made a happy beep and walked confidently into the room where the large robbed figure resided.
With Joel on his side he wasn’t worried about the monsters anymore.
