Chapter Text
"Hey, isn't that Kaiba?"
"Wait, he still attends school!?"
"No wayyyyy!"
"Guess even rich CEOs aren't excluded from school."
"Wouldn't he want to attend a private one, though?"
"Who cares! The fact we can say we attend the same school as the Seto Kaiba is going to be a hit with the ladies!"
Seto felt the slightest twitch from an eye as he passed. He could care less if he was visibly annoyed, however the chances of being forced to interact was something to be avoided. With this in mind Seto continued like he heard nothing. Other students in the hallway made way for him as if he were a living plague. Many gawked in a mixture of awe and fear.
Being tall had its perks. Harder to be ignored so everyone can avoid his path. That same perk was also a curse. Being CEO meant Seto had to quickly adapt being admired by the public. Strangely though, this did not settle a little secret boon of his.
Silently Seto took his seat. From the outside, he appears to be bored and coming off as too important to bother attending school with normal people. On the inside, Seto was secretly panicking. For as often as possible he used the excuse of running a successful company just so he wouldn't have to physically show up for classes. Finishing the lessons online proved to be the better suited solution for Seto's problem.
Unfortunately the schools required he should attend a certain amount of days without some form of repercussions (he had checked thoroughly all over Japan, and switching to outside the country was too much of a hassle). Since Seto refused to allow any flaws whatsoever, he was forced to show up in person.
Seto focused his attention on a book to pass the time since there were a few minutes to spare. As he was about to pull out the current novel which had earned Seto's interest, he noticed the lunch box Mokuba had brought him before they separated into their respective schools. On top of the bento box was a quickly scrawled note.
You've got this, big brother! Followed by a happy face with an attempt to add wings of Blue Eyes. Despite the hurried writing and the fact art was not Mokuba's strong point, the gesture settled Seto's nerves a lot more than the book he brought along. This almost brought a smile to his face in fact. Seto only caught himself when the door opened suddenly as one of the loudest voices ever to grate his ears startled him.
Fortunately all Seto did was twitch one of his hands in response to the obnoxious behavior. Other students dropped their notebooks. One unlucky classmate spat out their drink and began coughing. Everyone's perspectives only witnessed Seto being still as a statue since the hand that twitched was inside the bag. Casually the book was pulled out as if nothing happened.
"So anyway, I got to the point where I drew Red Eyes, and then - " Joey paused, catching sight of something odd.
The sensation of eyes regarding him from head to toe was familiar enough for Seto to ignore. What caught him off guard was when footsteps confidently approached. The way Joey sauntered over unnerved Seto to no end. This was a thorn in his side that would not leave him alone. Just because Joey was an upcoming underdog in the dueling world, that did not mean he could just act friendly to Seto Kaiba.
"So you've got time to finally show up!" Joey grinned.
Seto reread the sentence of the page he was reading. But his silence was never one to deter Joey. In fact, he seems to take it personally as a challenge. Joey leaned over enough to be in the field of vision. Seto was forced to look up. His eyes glaring daggers at the one person who can't take a hint.
"Any chance I can challenge ya to a duel today?" Joey either didn't care he was upsetting Seto, or his brain couldn't comprehend that not everyone was interested in being his friend. To Seto, he couldn't decide which of these were true for Joey, since he viewed the blond as only having one brain cell to begin with.
Seto gripped his book tight. Almost too tightly. He could feel the binding bending ever so slightly under the pressure. Which means when he's calmed enough to inspect the damage it may or may not piss him off more than the current situation. Seto was meticulous with his possessions. Any damages or flaws wouldn't do.
Leave me alone. Seto wanted to snarl out. Only he couldn't bring the words out. This was the secret boon Seto was trying his damnedest to guard with his life.
Living in an orphanage but having a brilliant mind beyond his years, Seto had been made fun of for being socially awkward. Proving he can fight to protect his brother earned less friends. When officially adopted the idea of normalcy seemed like a very distant dream. At the very least Gozaboro ensured Seto can flawlessly speak to the public or entertain some parties to gain allies in the elite world.
Outside of playing the facade of a confident CEO, Seto was a failure with normal conversations. In school settings he couldn't get away with barking orders to be left alone. His pride in keeping up an image wasn't helpful, either. Thus, Seto was never known to talk while at school. Of course he knew the rumors going around that he viewed himself above them.
While he did to a degree, some piece of Seto felt the sting that he couldn't bother to act normal enough to blend in. He couldn't fathom how he could speak when addressing a crowd, and yet to people in person in settings he had no control over, he couldn't talk? Seto might as well be known as the creep who wouldn't talk to people and possibly lived in the basement if he wasn't running Kaiba Corp.
"Cat got your tongue your Majesty?" Joey teased. A nickname he came up with after the third attempt at trying to challenge Seto for a casual duel.
"Dude, I think you should lay it off for today." Tristan for once wasn't encouraging his friend into mischief.
"What, it's just a duel! It's not like I'm threatening him!" Joey was really pushing it.
"I think his answer will be the same no matter what, which is no." Yugi deadpanned. The shortest of the group somehow had the good graces to earn some respect from Seto. But not enough to trust.
"Why, are you scared of losing to me?" Joey flashed another grin.
It took every ounce of control within Seto not to stand full height. He felt cornered. Other students by now were looking their way. This did nothing to settle the panic that was rapidly rising. Seto was placed into fight or flight mode. He was not someone to flee, which meant taking action that would likely haunt the rest of his career. He could bet all of his money on it with how Joey was a loud mouth with a grudge to match the attitude.
The entire classroom was still. So silent that everyone could hear a pin drop. The everyday noise outside in the hallway seemed too distant to disturb them. Everyone was waiting to see what would happen. Seto was close to shaking.
The bell rings.
"All right everyone, take your seats! And be on your best behavior! We have a new student today."
The excitement of a new face had everyone scrambling. Seto hadn't realized he had been holding his breath until the world went back into motion. He felt lightheaded and his chest constricted. Already Seto can tell he will be needing something for a migraine. In fact he could barely focus until the moment the door opened to reveal the new student.
Seto noticed the eyes first. Violet like Yugi's, however there was the faintest hint of red within the royal violet color that intrigued Seto. Being a CEO he could read someone by first meeting if they were going to be someone of value to keep an eye on as either a potential ally or enemy. These eyes had an effect very few had. In fact, Seto wasn't the only one to openly stare, everyone was being drawn to this person.
"Hello. My name is Atem. I'm a transfer from Egypt." He introduced. His voice was smooth and deeper than one would assume with his height and thin frame.
All of the girls swooned. Some of the guys blushed, others were stunned, a few were jealous of the way the girls were reacting. And then there was Seto. All he could see were the eyes that once locked with his, the world didn't seem so threatening anymore. For the first several seconds it took Seto way too long to register the rest of the features of this stranger.
He looks like Yugi? Seto could not believe that his brain hadn't processed the hair until a few of the other students began asking if they were related.
"Actually, we are distant cousins." Atem smiled, and yet his eyes for the most part remained locked with Seto's. As if he were answering Seto instead of the whole class.
Seto was on high alert now. Since he's related to Yugi, then Atem has likely heard it all from the others about him. While Seto expected judgment, the mutual curiosity was opening a sliver of hope within the CEO. He was only wary when meeting new people out of habit. It has also been a very rare occurrence to meet a charismatic person who has potential to be a friend. Seto can actually count on one hand.
There were more questions. Seto tuned them out as Atem began to address the classroom as a whole. He actually began to read some more. Reality was growing distant once more. That was until Seto heard his name from the teacher.
"Looks like you'll be sitting next to Kaiba."
Seto glanced with his eyes to confirm that the seat to his right was the only open spot. He hadn't noticed it was empty until it was pointed out. This placement had Seto reeling. One, this places Atem close. For the time being that wasn't bad. That couldn't be said with Yugi's group. Their annoying chatter grated Seto's ears and now he would be hearing them more often when he was forced to attend in person.
Just great. Seto could feel the migraine now.
From the corner of his eye, Seto noticed several details. One, Atem was confident. However this wasn't like Joey's level with being some hotshot thinking he could challenge everyone he wanted. This was someone who was comfortable with himself enough to be unbothered how others viewed him.
Atem sat down in the empty seat without hesitation. His nonchalant approach shocked a majority of the classroom. Normally students hated being seated next to Seto, as he refused to acknowledge people to the point it made everyone uncomfortable. Still he glanced over once again with his eyes. Only to nearly drop his book when violet reds stared back.
What's with me? Seto inwardly panicked. He could face Pegasus being creepy as they discussed the hologram technology for duel monsters just fine. But not with this stranger from Egypt?
Fortunately Atem didn't start any small talk. Seto was able to focus on simply paying enough attention to pass the day while also ignoring everyone around him. Anything to get the day over with and head home. Seto would rather be working on another project, or even the meetings that were just as boring as coming to school.
When the lunch bell rang, Seto hightailed out of the classroom to his usual spot. One of the school buildings rooftops with a decent enough view of Domino City. Here, Seto was finally alone and away from prying eyes. Here, Seto can relax and remind himself that the day was halfway over. He sat with legs over the edge to enjoy the view with his bag in his lap.
"Kaiba, was it?"
The sudden voice startled Seto enough that he nearly dropped his lunch. Unfortunately his book fell down from the rooftop down below. In the same instance, a gust of wind pulled the note from Mokuba off the bento box. Seto tried to reach for it in his panic. Anything from Mokuba held a higher sense of sentimental value than anything else, as silly it was. His fingers couldn't grip the note. But a tanned hand caught the note without any trouble.
Seto looked up the same moment he leaned too far and the two tumbled. Luckily Atem had the sense to pull them back so that they wouldn't follow the unfortunate book to the ground. They opened their eyes at the same moment after landing. Like a spell that only Atem had this effect, the world went still. This time even Atem was speechless.
"... Your hand is hurting me." He didn't sound angry. Atem spoke matter of fact, but softer.
Seto realized in this moment his hand that had tried to catch the note was squeezing Atem's wrist. Too quickly Seto let go and pulled away to sit up. While being completely off guard, his expression showed how upset and flustered he was. Secretly, Atem adored the expression, although he was concerned upon seeing the tears Seto was fighting back for being so overwhelmed.
"Are you okay?" Atem worried. He sat up slowly, sensing that he shouldn't make any sudden movements.
The question had Seto feel gutted. Such a simple question held a complex set of emotions that weren't doing him any favors in this moment. In fact, Seto forced his legs to get up and move. He was near running down the stairs, fumbling with his bag so as not to spill whatever else out. Seto could hear Atem calling out, but he ignored him.
Seto couldn't trust himself not to completely lose it. For the first time in his life, Seto was fleeing. He didn't even bother to call in the school until he stepped through Kaiba Corp doors. Getting in trouble for leaving school be damned. There was no way Seto would walk back into class like nothing happened after that embarrassment. So despite the confusion from among the employees, Seto dived into work while still in school uniform.
Hours passed until it was time for Mokuba to be done with his own school. Seto was actually looking forward to seeing his brother. Hence he didn't immediately look up when his office door opened.
"Would you like something from a restaurant for dinner?" Seto rarely allowed them to become spoiled with ordering out. However, this might be a good enough distraction from being asked what happened.
"A little early to be asking me out for dinner, aren't we?" A smooth baritone voice playfully replied.
Seto froze. Then like a strange fever dream he slowly looked up to see none other than Atem Mutou casually standing in his office. This was so unexpected that Seto stared shell shocked. Atem for his part offered a kind smile before placing something on the desk. Seto warily glanced, only to do a double take upon seeing the book and the note being returned.
"I came to apologize for earlier. And perhaps a means to make up for scaring you."
Seto immediately tensed up and glared. This sounded like a trap. Atem seemed taken aback from the hostility, but he didn't stand down. If anything Atem was more surprised.
"Oh, hey, big brother! Did you make a friend?" Mokuba's cheerful voice broke the tension.
Seto meant to respond, but his throat tightened. He silently and angrily berated himself for this stupid weakness of his. He was Seto Kaiba, CEO of Kaiba Corp. This was his office. This was his domain. And yet he couldn't speak up when some stranger had shown up uninvited?
"Actually, he was just offering we order something from a restaurant." Atem smiled a knowing smile. He seemed to be catching onto something, and that only upset Seto more as he grit his teeth.
"My big brother actually talked to you?" Mokuba innocently blinked with wide eyes. The younger Kaiba was excited to see such a huge leap. And Seto knew he couldn't just throw Atem out like this.
Sneaky little snake. Seto thought bitterly. And yet he began to hold some admiration for Atem. It has been too long since someone has come along and twist Seto's world around.
"... Fine." He agreed, voice dark. Seto barely spoke above a whisper. And yet his answer earned a warm smile from Atem.
"Hooray!" Mokuba cheered.

"Are you sure you want to go inside?" While Yugi's voice was full of concern, Atem remained confident.
"It's the least I can do. Who knows if he will come back to school tomorrow." Atem glanced at the book and wrinkled paper in his hands. He found the note's contents adorable. Having witnessed Kaiba panic of losing a simple trinket opened a side of the CEO that wasn't common knowledge. Something about this was too special to pass up.
"Okay. Sure. I'll give you that. But are you really sure about going in alone?" Yugi studied his cousin with worry.
"You're making it sound like I'm walking into a dragons den." Atem teased with a chuckle. His attempt worked to lighten up the mood since it earned a laugh.
"What does that make you, the damsel in distress or the shining knight?" Yugi was close to bursting at his own description.
"I would say more like a sorcerer." Atem had his Dark Magician in mind.
"A sorcerer strolling into a dragons den. For what purpose?" Yugi raised a brow.
"A peace offering." Atem refused to elaborate further by what he meant. For this felt like a little secret that Atem should only study for himself. He had the thought that if he pulled others into this, it would only serve to drive Kaiba away even more.
"Okay. Promise to call me if you need back up. I don't care if he is a CEO, that's not going to stop me from giving him a piece of my mind if he hurts you."
"I promise." Atem chuckled. The image of Yugi charging up at Kaiba left an amusing impression.
Yugi continued on home. Atem entered Kaiba Corp. He approached a secretary. The poor girl blushed upon looking up to greet him. Atem put on his best smile. Charming this girl should be easy.
"Excuse me, I'm from Kaiba's class. He left behind his book earlier. I would like to return it?" He held the book in question. The bookmark was high enough in between pages to show the identical KC logo.
"Oh! Thank you for looking out for Kaiba-Sama! Let me help you reach his floor." The girl seemed too relieved and shocked that a kind gesture was being done for the CEO. This further concluded the theory that Kaiba wasn't well liked at all in school. And it would seem even the employees have some insight about this.
I don't understand why? He only seemed to appear uncomfortable at school. Atem viewed the CEO as someone too cautious to open up to anyone. Which he understands to a point, considering Kaiba's work.
"Thanks again!" The girl waved sweetly before the elevator doors closed between them.
The elevator ride wasn't too long. Atem easily navigated to the only office on this floor and helped himself to walk in. He couldn't help but notice a completely different version of Kaiba. The CEO was in his element. Poised, focused and not as closed off. He didn't even look up from the computer screen as he typed.
"Would you like something from a restaurant for dinner?" The inquiry surprised Atem. Kaiba hadn't realized this wasn't who he expected to enter the office.
His natural voice is better than the persona he shows in interviews. Atem observed.
"A little early to be asking me out for dinner, aren't we?" Atem could not pass this opportunity up even if it earned him being thrown out.
Watching Kaiba slowly process the situation was comical. Atem suppressed a laugh when their eyes met. Hopefully his smile didn't reveal his true thoughts. Atem set the book down on the desk. This was as close he dared to approach. The office wasn't neutral territory after all. In fact the longer Atem stood here, he began to feel the oppression of really being inside a dragons den.
"I came to apologize for earlier. And perhaps a means to make up for scaring you." He meant to sound friendly, but perhaps his choice of words were poorly executed. The glare from Kaiba could freeze hell over.
Dragons den, indeed. Atem amazed himself sometimes. The world knew Kaiba's deck was centered around Blue Eyes White Dragon. In fact, there were only a very small number of them. Kaiba possessed three of the four known Blue Eyes.
When Atem was growing more concerned he might be facing Kaiba's full wrath, someone else entered the office. Atem couldn't bring himself to turn his gaze away from the CEO. Kaiba's body language gave off the impression of a cornered animal. One that Atem shouldn't turn away from.
"Oh, hey, big brother! Did you make a friend?" A younger voice cut through the growing tension. Atem relaxed enough to turn his head to keep both brothers in his field of view while addressing Mokuba.
"Actually, he was just offering we order something from a restaurant." The timing couldn't have been more perfect. The younger Kaiba could ease the atmosphere.
"My big brother actually talked to you?" Mokuba stared wide eyed.
Oh? Atem found this phrase odd. He regarded the elder Kaiba in question. Atem watched as Kaiba forced one single word out just above a whisper.
"... Fine."
Atem's observations about Kaiba's behavior was placed aside as Mokuba cheered. His assumption was correct that the younger Kaiba would be the medium ground Atem needed. He was genuinely curious to see how Kaiba's mind worked.
He couldn't quite observe as well as he hoped for since Mokuba became so excited that he insisted they go out to eat instead of ordering food. Atem watched as Kaiba nervously and silently gave in. Since he was a guest, Atem let Mokuba choose and the three of them took a ride in one of the company vehicles. Atem noted that the driver understood Kaiba's moods without having to ask questions.
Upon arrival, Atem could tell that this restaurant must be a favorite of Mokuba's well enough that hardly anyone batted an eye to see the two brothers. However, some staff did stare and do a double take at the sight of a third.
"Welcome, Mokuba! And to you, Mister Kaiba!" One of the servers greeted cheerfully. "Will it be your usual for take out?"
"Actually, we're eating in." Mokuba grinned.
"Eating...in? Oh, of course! Tonight one of our best tables is open!" The girl recovered from the shock well enough by her excitement.
When it came to ordering, Mokuba spoke for his brother. Atem ordered on his own. All the while he remained careful as he watched the brothers interacting. Mokuba was the one who started making small talk.
"So, I've noticed you have a bit of an accent. Where are you from?"
"Oh, I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt."
"Really? I've always wanted to check out museums there. It is where Pegasus claimed to have found the inspiration for duel monsters." Mokuba beamed.
"I would highly recommend you should. I'll even tell you which exhibits are the best to see the stone tablets that depicts monsters." Atem encouraged.
"Really? That sounds awesome! Isn't there a rare one that has Blue Eyes?"
"That's not usually common knowledge." Atem nervously studied both brothers.
"Pegasus mentioned he had seen it once when we tested the dueling arenas." Mokuba explained all too happily.
"Well, then can't dispute that claim." Atem made a mental note to remind Pegasus not to boast so much.
"So what brought you to Domino City?"
"Family business. It's a little too personal to elaborate for right now." Although Atem wouldn't mind informing the brothers, he wanted to learn to trust them first.
The mood shifted, as the Kaiba brothers understood this was too sensitive of a topic. Fortunately their food arrived. After the first few bites Mokuba asked the one question that had Atem and Kaiba freeze.
"How did you become friends with Seto?"
Atem's eyes met Kaiba's. And he could read the panic in those pretty blues. Atem decided then to save the CEO from further stress. In the back of his mind he wondered why he was quickly becoming a sucker for Kaiba's eyes in particular.
"Actually, I was returning his book that he accidentally left behind."
"But my brother usually isn't that careless." Mokuba glanced between the two, growing suspicious.
"Well, that may have been my fault." Atem nervously admitted. "I felt bad when he rushed off and never returned to class. I found his book and I wanted to return it as an apology."
"So then... You aren't friends with my brother?" Mokuba stared irritably. However his gaze was mostly focused on Kaiba. Atem noticed the broad shoulders tense. And once again he felt responsible.
"I would like to be one. But I get the feeling that's up to him. Thank you for the offer of my first restaurant experience here in Japan. I will go ahead and pay for my tab." Atem gathered his plate to be placed in a go to box to leave the brothers some privacy.
Although the counter was a ways enough he couldn't hear the conversation, Atem understood the tone of Mokuba being disappointed. He glanced behind to see Kaiba sitting silently, looking down at his lap. The defeated expression pulled at Atem's heart and he sighed.
"Actually, I'll pay for the whole tab." He turned to the cashier.
"Of course! Wait..." She turned in surprise. The total had been expensive before covering the brothers. Now some stranger was offering to cover the rest.
"Be sure to give Kaiba my regards." Atem winked.
His charm was enough to convince the cashier to let him ring up his card. He silently chuckled when his card went through without any problems and she briefly stared in surprise. But like the same professionalism as before, she recovered quickly. Atem left a large sum of a tip for her since he admired the way she handled all of these surprises that would have earned him an earful of questions.
Atem took a cab home. He entered the Game Shop, his leftovers in hand. Grandpa and Yugi happily greeted his return. However Yugi stared when he noticed the name of the restaurant.
"Did you really have dinner with Kaiba?" Yugi was so shocked his voice was a higher pitch.
"It was.... interesting." Atem answered coyly. The rest of the evening was spent refusing to elaborate on anything to Yugi. Eventually his cousin gave up. But not without a promise he will have answers some day.
The next day Atem expected the seat next to him to he empty. To his surprise, and apparently for everyone else in the class, Seto Kaiba was present. In fact, Kaiba had been the first to arrive. A rare choice if the nervous whispering was anything to go by. Atem casually sat down in his seat. All throughout the morning Atem felt eyes watching him. He didn't have to turn to know that it was Kaiba.
At first break, Atem pulled away from Yugi and his friends with an excuse that he forgotten something from the classroom. The group left him behind and Atem returned to see Kaiba hadn't moved at all. Despite the cold glare, Atem smiled.
"I know you've been staring. Was there something you wanted to say to me?"
Kaiba blinked. The anger that had been boiling slowly in the morning hadn't totally left. But it was now down to a simmer. When the silence grew into uncomfortable levels, Atem almost turned to leave. When he took one step, Kaiba moved. A large hand gripped Atem's wrist. Calming the flustered emotions proved to be difficult even for Atem as he regarded Kaiba.
"Yes?" He gently asked.
Kaiba opened his mouth. Only to pause. And then Kaiba closed again. He seemed to be internally berating himself as the warm hand let go. Atem then had an idea. He pulled out a pen and one of his notebooks to hand over. He didn't even have to place it on Kaiba's desk when the notebook was snatched so fast Atem could only blink.
He watched as Kaiba elegantly wrote on a page. Even if the writing was quick, Kaiba held a practiced hand to write perfectly. Atem leaned over when the pen stopped moving. This close he could faintly smell Kaiba's cologne. Atem tried his best not to get distracted.
Why did you pay for the whole meal?
"I paid because I felt responsible for you getting an earful from your brother. That hadn't been my intention." Atem watched the pen continue.
Why didn't you tell anyone you're president of Millennium Studios?
"You've done your homework I see." Atem chuckled. He smiled before answering.
"As I said last night, I'm here for personal family business. My studios aren't exactly known outside of Egypt."
Kaiba angrily continued to write.
It's a million dollar company. And yet you mean to tell me you're not interested in branching out?
"I'm comfortable with the state Millennium Studios is currently. Besides, preserving the past for future generations to understand isn't exactly as thrilling compared to Kaiba Corp." Atem shrugged off.
Kaiba stared in disbelief. It was another minute of silence before the scribbling of the pen on paper started once more. Atem noticed that for the most part Kaiba's movements have calmed down.
Let me know if you're ever open to branch out.
"Does this make us friends?" Atem felt this may be pushing it. For a heartbeat he watched Kaiba contemplate.
Kaiba quickly wrote something down. Before Atem could lean over to read, his notebook and pen was returned. He could only blink, taking in the flustered features that were reminiscent of the previous day. Only this time Kaiba wasn't on the verge of tears from being overwhelmed. Atem decided that he wanted to see more of this.
The bell rang. Since break was over anyway, Atem sat down. As the classroom had yet to be filled in again, he opened the notebook to the page where Kaiba wrote. At the bottom was a phone number. Atem stared as the implication hit full force. Kaiba's answer had been something so simple and yet an opening of the door for friendship.
"Hey, Atem! What took ya? Hey, did some girl give you her phone number?" Joey's voice startled Atem enough that he slammed his notebook shut. He was certain that his cheeks were flushed. Beside him, Atem faintly heard a snort from Kaiba.
"Oh, that was just something to remember about making an appointment later." Atem wanted to smack himself. Normally he was never this flustered enough to be bad at lying.
"Ohhhhhhh so it was a girl!" Joey teased.
Atem squirmed his legs underneath his desk. From the corner of his eye he could have sworn Kaiba was smirking. Of course now that the tables have turned, Kaiba was enjoying the show. Atem laughed enough to get Joey to let go of the moment. The moment the blond left for his own seat, Atem brought out his phone to quietly save the number. He typed one message while awkwardly holding the phone underneath the desk.
Saving you under the name K.
Beside him, Kaiba reached into his bag. His fingers were fast enough to type and send a message all while pulling out a book. Atem wondered how can someone manage to do that. His phone vibrated and Atem peeked.
Then you'll be saved under A.
Atem smiled fondly. Unbeknownst to him, Kaiba stared.

Chapter Text
Seto didn't return to school until the next week. He did have a reputation to uphold, after all. Getting stared at for showing up two days in a row had been uncomfortable but worth the effort. Soon as Seto informed Mokuba of the news, his brother was the happiest he had seen in a while.
Texting Atem had taken effort to add into a daily routine. Seto wasn't used to talking to anyone on a personal level outside of Mokuba. And he wasn't certain, but the CEO began to suspect Atem was allowing Seto to adjust. At first Seto was the one to initiate conversations. Which mainly started with what he knew best.
What inspired you to create Millennium Studios? Although this might be a boring topic, Seto was curious about the success. Online, there wasn't a lot of information about how this company had been put together.
Some parts of my family tree come from a very rich history. However, there's a point where the records are questionable. I decided to look into Ancient Egypt to narrow down whether the claims are true or not. And along the way I helped discover other precious records to fill in other gaps of history. It snowballed from there.
I take it your work introduced you to Pegasus? You seemed nervous when he was brought up. Not that Seto could fault such a reaction. He himself wasn't fond of the creep.
Yes. He is the only expert to consult with tablets that depict the monsters that inspired the game. Atem replied curtly.
I wouldn't blame you if you don't like him. It took Seto a few minutes to hit send.
Oh, good. I'm not the only one.
I can never tell if it's his voice or his condescending attitude that's disturbing.
More like his insistence to say your name then followed by "boy".
Seto went still as that damned voice echoed in his head. He couldn't be the only one to imagine it. This was something Pegasus was known for.
Kaiba boy! Kaiba boyyyyyy! Oh Kaiba boy!
Actually, yes, I agree. Seto shivered as he pushed out the conversations he had to endure when Pegasus was required.
After this interaction the nervousness evaporated. Seto noticed Atem would sometimes start conversations. Soon enough Seto began to look forward to these conversations. Unknown to Seto, his brother Mokuba was a silent spectator as the friendship progressed.
The day Seto appeared in school, he was met with a surprise. At lunch, Atem helped himself to sit at the desk in front of Seto. The CEO blinked in confusion. And then a board of chess was placed on his desk. He watched as Atem set the board.
Seto was white. Atem was black.
Blue eyes looked up with a silent question.
"I've been informed you're amazing at chess. So I want to see for myself." Atem spoke casually, completely ignoring the wide eyed stares from the rest of the class.
When the shock wore off Seto smirked. This was a challenge he could get behind. Chess didn't require talking. And to Seto's amazement, Atem proved to be a powerful adversary. In fact, he was keeping up with Seto's fast pace. Around them the class watched in awe and shock as the pair played chess.
"I believe this is check mate." Atem moved the black knight to knock down the white king.
Seto stared at the board.
How? He had the perfect strategy. He should have had the game in his favor by the next round. Seto looked up to see Atem smirking. The class watched as the CEO's resolve to win flared full force.
The board was set again. Once more the pair were silent as they moved piece by piece. Seto noticed something as they played. Atem seemed to prefer his knights and bishops. And he wasn't afraid of moving his king to defend itself.
He almost treats the king like a pawn. Seto observed.
A strategy came to mind. All Seto needed to do was distract Atem just enough. This proved to be a difficult challenge as Atem was quick to counter. Still, Seto wasn't deterred. The fast clinking of the chess pieces somehow began to echo in the classroom as the rest of the students watched in bated breath.
"Checkmate." Seto moved his queen to knock down the black king. A number of students gasped upon hearing his voice.
Atem blinked before smiling.
"Good game. Shall we go again?"
For all of their lunch they played. The total count of wins was that Atem had five, and Seto had three. While it hurt his pride that someone was better than him, Seto admired Atem. Playing chess opened a new perspective into Atem's thought process. While Atem can come off as sentimental, he wasn't a sore loser. And he happily met halfway with a challenge. Something that Seto hadn't known he missed in an opponent until today.
I wonder how he duels. Seto felt an itch.
Although he had won himself a fair amount of tournaments, Seto rarely played outside of them. This was mostly because he could hardly see enough challenges that were worthy of his efforts. Joey was a good example of Seto's standards.
Atem was different.
Atem.... Seto had a sudden thought at the end of the day. He pulled out his phone to text.
Thank you.
For? Atem was quick to reply.
Challenging me to chess. Just so you know, expect a duel at some point in the future.
I look forward to a duel with the Seto Kaiba. By the way, you should be thanking your brother for the idea of playing chess with you.
Mokuba? Seto stared at his phone.
Don't be so hard on him. He was only making an innocent suggestion. This was a little too quick to defend the younger Kaiba.
Innocent? Seto pressed. He knew Mokuba well enough that his brother can sometimes be too pushy.
Well, actually, his intentions were pure. His method could use some work. As if that was any better of an excuse.
What exactly did my brother do? Now Seto was curious.
He took my number from your phone.
Seto didn't have to ask for screenshots. He can already imagine Mokuba being a little too extra as he messaged Atem. After all it wasn't just Seto adjusting to having a friend. Mokuba wasn't used to his big brother on his phone more often. Seto recalled the stares from Mokuba when he took a moment to read messages from Atem.
"Hey, big brother! How was school? You actually look happy returning home." Mokuba cheerfully greeted.
"Why did you feel the need to involve yourself into messaging Atem?" Seto made sure to stare. It wasn't long before his brother cracked.
"I was just testing him! Gotta make sure he's not like Joey." Mokuba huffed.
"You're lucky he's not like those creeps who would try to leak out our information. At the very least, just use my phone next time." Although Seto sounded disappointed, he still patted his brother's shoulder.
"So... I take it he took my suggestion to heart?" Mokuba stared.
"Yes. He did."
"Please tell me you kicked his a-"
Seto glared.
"I mean, his butt!"
"I won three rounds."
"Heck yeah! What about him? Did Atem win any?"
Seto walked on past. Mokuba knew his brother well enough that Atem indeed win some rounds. Although he wanted to pester for answers, Mokuba was already on thin ice for being found out harassing Atem behind Seto's back. Truthfully, it really had been a small test whether Atem would take him seriously. A test of character was to be expected from Mokuba.
That evening, Seto couldn't sleep. For one, there was an important project that was on the verge of falling behind. Part of it was due to a few parts of the machinery that had been delivered faulty. Seto immediately severed all contracts from the company that allowed the chaotic mishap of giving them faulty equipment. Now Kaiba Corp was scrambling to make their own from scratch.
Seto began testing the duel disks himself. During one of his breaks, the CEO was reevaluating his deck. Switching out some cards for others. As Seto went through them, he had the thought to message Atem.
What is your favorite card? Seto was curious to understand what kind of deck Atem would have.
In dueling? It would seem Atem also couldn't sleep with how late the night was.
No, in blackjack. Of course duel monsters. Seto smirked. It turned into a smile when Atem laugh reacted to the message.
Truthfully, that's a hard one to answer. However, if I were to name a favorite? Dark Magician.
Not many turn to magicians. Seto commented. Which was true. While duel monsters has a broad means for everyone to discover their niche, few turned to magicians simply because they weren't "cool enough". So what attracted Atem to them?
Tricks and magic make for great counter strategies. Atem proudly answered.
Good to know. Seto didn't pry further. He wanted to understand just enough to expect what he was walking into when the chance arose for them to duel.
A thought occurred to the CEO.
Why are you awake so late? This felt too personal to ask. However Seto only realized this after he hit send.
Can't sleep. Besides, conversing with you is always a pleasure. Why are you awake at this ungodly hour?
Seto stared at the text. He felt his face heat up. For a moment his brain couldn't think of a response. He panicked further when Atem began to type. The next message had Seto's heart sink.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to step out of line.
In Seto's panic to reply, his finger accidentally hit call. Atem answered on the first ring. So even though the CEO felt all kinds of panic and fluster, he couldn't bring himself to just hang up.
"Hello?" Atem's voice sounded off.
A certain slurred speech kind of off.
"... Are you drinking?" Seto wanted to physically smack some sense into Atem.
"Before you start, I rarely drink." Atem chuckled. "And whatever lecture you're going to give me I'll listen. I think I went a little too heavy tonight."
"Where are you?" Seto can hear music in the background.
"Why, are you going to drag me back to the Game Shop and let Grandpa and Yugi chew my ass?" Atem's voice turned dark.
"As hilarious as that would be to witness, I would rather not place you into a spot that makes you feel worse about yourself." Seto spoke through gritted teeth.
For a few heartbeats there was awkward silence.
"So.... What are you proposing?" The baritone voice grew softer.
Seto seriously considered their options. With a sigh, he gave in the one that might place him in trouble. Occasionally there would be reporters stalking around Kaiba Corp just to capture anything that could be blasted for the world to see. However Seto didn't care. He found himself caring more about Atem's safety.
"My place to crash until you're ready to get your ass chewed out." Seto heard Atem nearly choke on a drink. He waited to hear the other recover. Before Seto could ask, his question was answered.
"Sorry. But hearing you cuss is just..." Atem trailed off to laugh.
"What?" Seto pressed.
"It's a little unexpected to hear. Just like actually hearing your voice for once. Please tell me this isn't a dream?" The last part unsettled Seto. He didn't trust Atem's mental state.
"I'll do you one better. Tell me where you are and I'll prove to you this isn't a dream."
"Challenge accepted. I'll send you the address." Atem promptly hung up. As promised, he did send the address.
Seto wasted no time. He had one of his chauffers wake up to drive them to the bar in question. Fortunately upon arrival, no one noticed him. Seto made quick work to pull Atem out by the arm. When the bartender began to panic about payment, Seto tossed a handful of cash that he already prepared in case this was necessary.
"... I'm surprised you actually did follow through." Atem comments after a few minutes of them sitting in the car.
"Better me than your cousin." Seto scoffed. His arms were crossed as he held back his anger. He couldn't fathom someone like Atem falling so fast into this depressing state. Let alone turn to drinking. He turned to glare at Atem.
"Thank you, Seto."
Seto felt his heart race. He tried his best not to show how flustered he was by simply being called by his first name. In the driver's seat, Roland glanced at the rear view mirror to catch the scene unfolding behind him. He half expected Seto to explode. Instead the CEO was flustered to the point of speechless. Roland made a mental note to place Atem as someone important to the CEO. A rarity that someone outside of the family could pull Seto out of his shell.
Upon arrival back to Kaiba Corp, Atem still couldn't sleep. Thus Seto let him sit and watch as he continued to test the duel disk prototype. There was something going wrong with the sensors. And Seto was not going to stop until he got them working.
Finally, he had a breakthrough just shy of dawn. The roar of Blue Eyes White Dragon sounded off. This time no more glitches, and the hologram appearing without any trouble added to the victory. Seto smiled at finally having the success he desired.
"She reminds me of you." Atem's voice startled Seto. The CEO turned to stare, having forgotten that he wasn't alone.
"... She?" That was the most Seto could lock on in his sleep deprived state.
"Blue Eyes." Atem studied the dragon in question.
Seto followed Atem's example. Now that it was pointed out, he couldn't unsee it. For all the years Seto had Blue Eyes, he never once thought to view the dragon as more than simply a card. Atem was showing him a whole new perspective.
"If you would like, I can arrange for the stone tablet that has Blue Eyes White Dragon brought here for you to see."
"Why?" Seto regarded the other curiously.
"To be honest, I never really liked this tablet in particular. Not because of the monsters. It's because of the other images carved in. It was difficult to convince Pegasus not to take a photo of this one to study further. I didn't want any copies out in the world. I forced him to study it in person."
"So are you trying to hand off a stone tablet just because you don't like it?"
"I think you deserve to see it before I make a decision about destroying it or not."
"Why would you destroy it?" Seto stared. Over the last week he had seen the passion Atem had for learning and preserving knowledge.
"I think you'll understand when you see it. But before then, can I ask you a favor?" Violet red eyes met Seto's.
"Depends on what it is." Seto doesn't do favors. His tone expressed that.
"Watching you work on the holograms inspired an idea. One that might be a little out of your realm of interests. However, it could be the bridge between our companies."
"Go on." Now Seto was interested.
"The tablets that depict duel monsters. We can use holograms to bring them to life. It might draw more interest within museums to display the pieces, as of yet they haven't understood the impact duel monsters has in our generation. Can you imagine a young kid in a school field trip, being bored, only to leave feeling excited about what they learned?" Atem caught himself.
"Sorry, didn't mean to turn philosophical. I blame the drinks."
"Your description has caught my interest. We can discuss the finer details of a contract later. Right now I think you need to sleep the alcohol off." Seto wasn't going to take no for an answer.
Atem's laugh was soft, and yet it still echoed in the testing chamber. Seto wanted to hear more of that laugh. To be the only one to hear it. He hadn't even realized that a hunger took hold in his gaze. Atem did notice.
"The way you're looking at me has me thinking I'm in the Red Riding Hood story. Only, instead of a wolf, I'm facing a dragon." Atem teased.
"Don't give me ideas for blackmail." Seto scoffed, half serious.
"Oohh, so there is a kinky dark side to you." Atem smiled.
"Don't go around blasting that to the world." Seto bristled.
"Or else, what, dear Seto?" Atem challenged as he approached closer.
"Are you even sober enough to find out?"
"Hm. You're probably right. Oh, in case I don't wake up when Yugi calls, you can hold my phone." Atem handed the device over then turned to lay on one of the couches. He was asleep before Seto could even think of a response.
Seto glanced down at the phone.
What am I getting myself mixed up with?
Notes:
Don't worry, Atem won't be an alcoholic. Think by now a good number of us have had bad days that lead to a binge of bad habits. And no, playing chess against Seto wasn't anywhere near what set Atem off into a spiral. More will be explained though.
Chapter Text
Atem woke up on an unfamiliar surface. He started awake, sitting up so fast his vision was spinning. He took a moment to calm his nerves and his head to stop swirling. Atem opened his eyes to a peculiar sight.
He was in Kaiba's office.
Warily Atem turned only to see Kaiba himself typing away. And yet even as he typed, Kaiba glanced over. It was at that moment Atem recalled the previous evening. He wanted to run away and hide. It didn't help matters that Kaiba appeared exhausted. The CEO likely had little sleep. Guilt chipped away at Atem's chest.
"I would first like to apologize for my behavior last night." Atem felt like a fool.
"For what, our conversations? For that you have nothing to apologize for. However, now that you're sober, I am curious to know why you drank at all."
Atem looked down briefly to gather the courage. After everything he might as well come clean. Atem took a deep breath.
"My father passed away. I only got the news when school ended. I knew it was coming with his sickness but to be honest, for it to happen on one of the best days so far since I've moved here hit hard. I was looking forward to telling him about our chess matches." Atem couldn't bring himself to look up.
There was a long uncomfortable silence.
"He didn't want me to live by myself when he passed. So that's why I was encouraged to come live with Yugi. I really didn't want to be so far away from the hospital. They had somehow tricked me into a flight here. While I could just fly back to Egypt, I couldn't bring myself to do so."
Atem couldn't stand the heavy silence so he continued to ramble. A part of him felt stupid. That he shouldn't talk. But the silence was worse.
"I only spoke to him about you. He seemed happy that I made my own friend. I wanted to tell him about our chess matches. How much fun that was. But then..." Atem trailed off, unable to force the words out.
"I may not understand that kind of pain. But don't wallow in self pity next time. I would rather beat into you with a duel that you shouldn't turn to drinking." Kaiba finally replied.
Even though the venom was clear in the CEO's tone, his words eased Atem's mind. He looked up with a sad smile. Briefly Atem recognized that Kaiba stared. He seemed to do that a lot with every smile Atem made.
Last night wasn't my imagination? Atem held back hope.
"Next time I will challenge you, then. And, thank you. For everything. I'm sure I'm going to be getting an earful." Waking up to a calmer environment was better than immediately being guilt tripped about the choices made. There was a faint tch before Kaiba replied with absolute confidence.
"You better. If I have to hear second hand from the geek squad, I'm beating you in a live broadcast duel."
"Oh? Special treatment from the Seto Kaiba of Kaiba Corp?" Atem felt brave enough to be playful. His heart skipped a few beats when Kaiba smirked.
The hunger in those eyes returned tenfold. And in that moment Atem understood that what he read the previous night hadn't been a dream. He tried his best not to reveal how flushed he felt. However Atem could feel his cheeks were hot.
I really am poking at a dragon. Atem felt excitement bubbling up. He was ready to take a step further with being playful, however a phone went off from a message. The mood dropped like a hot potato when Atem recognized his phone text notification.
"How mad is Yugi?" Atem nervously asked.
"See for yourself." The curt response did little to ease the growing dread. Atem forced his legs to move and approach closer. Some of the flirting from earlier lingered enough that Atem felt his heart race for a different reason as he picked up his phone to check the messages.
Atem scanned the short conversation Kaiba had with Yugi. Immediately there was a difference in tone. Kaiba was polite but closed off about giving details. About the only exchange Kaiba wasn't a wall was when Yugi made an accusation. Atem felt angry for Kaiba that his cousin would stoop that low. He was quick to start typing.
I do regret up and leaving you and Grandpa the way I did and giving you guys a bad scare for ignoring you both last night. But did you really have to call Seto a liar? Atem typed.
Well, good morning to you, too. Yugi shot back.
Aibou. Atem pressed. There was a short moment before his cousin gave up.
Okay, I admit, I was in a panic. It didn't help he was all talking business and would not answer my calls. And for the record, I did apologize after we've calmed down.
While I can see that, it's still rude to see that you instigated that argument. Atem knew Yugi's thought process hadn't exactly been all there during a panic attack. Still, allowing the situation to get that heated wasn't the best for anyone.
Can you honestly say that you wouldn't be in a panic if you were in my shoes? I mean, you never told me that you got his number.
Remember when Joey caught me with a phone number in my notebook?
Yeah?
That was Kaiba's.
Wait... So you've been "friends" with Kaiba for over a week and haven't told me?
Atem squirmed. There was no getting out of this one. He had been secretive about who he had been messaging for the last week mostly because Atem didn't want to share. His cousin was always more of a protective brother, and Atem knew that can sometimes lead to awkward conversations that made Mokuba's attempt of bullying tame in comparison.
Don't trail off me chewing you out for your behavior. Atem sent. He immediately regretted his choice of words but the damage had been done.
Oh, that's so mature coming from you, who up and left and DRANK ALL NIGHT
Atem flinched. It didn't matter the distance, he can feel the fury from Yugi. And as expected his cousin didn't stop.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU HADN'T BEEN PICKED UP BY KAIBA OF ALL PEOPLE??? YOU COULD HAVE PASSED OUT SOMEWHERE AND GOTTEN YOURSELF KIDNAPPED OR SOMETHING
The bubbles indicated more messages. But Yugi paused. After a moment of nothing else being said, Atem took this chance.
I deserve more than you yelling as punishment. I am sorry. Atem owned up, knowing by now Yugi was likely crying. Truth be told, Atem was close to tears.
Can you please come home?
Always. Atem answered without hesitation. He stared fondly at the request. Even when they had these rare moments to argue, nothing can sever the family bond. Atem was too caught up in the moment to notice Kaiba staring with a hint of jealousy.
"Think the worst from Yugi has been unleashed. Before I go, is there anything I can do to repay you for everything?" Atem looked up to meet Kaiba's gaze. For a heartbeat the two stared.
"Draw up your end of a contract and send it to me. I'll add any finer details on my end if it's necessary."
"You trust me to write it?" Atem blinked.
"We both know that Millennium Studios won't stand a chance against Kaiba Corp by starting a feud."
Atem couldn't read if Kaiba was too confident, or he had thought well enough ahead to know their options. For the first time Kaiba was being closed off. The stinging in Atem's chest was either because of the words that were chosen or the fact Kaiba set up a wall between them.
"Don't tell me that's not all I can do." Atem couldn't believe he was doing this, but he still leaned to partially sit against the ledge of the desk. His smirk remained confidently playful despite watching Kaiba eyeing him over.
Oh. Oh my. Atem suppressed a shiver. Normally, he was hardly effected when being admired. Atem could continue a normal conversation without skipping a beat when the other person was flustered and openly staring. Atem was so used to these sorts of interactions, that he felt nothing. But when it was Seto Kaiba, Atem did feel something.
And that something was rapidly growing. Atem felt drawn closer and closer like a moth to a flame. Although he worried that he could get burned in the process, Atem strangely wanted it all the same.
"Let's see how we work as business partners first." While Kaiba placed that stipulation, even his voice was strained just a tiny bit that if Atem hadn't been paying attention he wouldn't have noticed.
"You sure you can hold yourself together that long, my dragon?" Atem tilted his head.
"Your dragon?" A fire was ignited in Kaiba's eyes. It took a few seconds for Atem to read that these eyes weren't burning with anger.
"You can claim me as your sorcerer to make it even." Atem couldn't suppress the shiver this time when Kaiba smirked.
"While you may have caught my interest by a simple game of chess, there's more to earning that kind of dance with me. Besides, trusting a partner is a whole different ball game compared to trusting a friend." Part of Kaiba's heart closed off as he spoke. Atem felt a pang in his chest.
"Will you allow me the chance? No hard feelings if you want this to stop." Actually, a lot of feelings. Atem was in too deep. But even here he couldn't be selfish. All he could think about was placing everyone's needs above his own.
"Why lie about that?" Kaiba caught on.
"Oh? You can tell when I'm lying already?" Atem shifted. He looked away to calm himself and gather his thoughts. When he looked back, his heart sank upon seeing more of the wall being put up.
"I have a nasty habit of thinking of others before myself. It's to the point that I can't say no to anyone when they need me. If it's something I can do, I'll drop whatever in order to help."
Atem watched Kaiba contemplate. For a moment he feared that this would be the end of whatever was going on between them. Was this even considered something? For once Atem was uncertain. Then Kaiba responded with words that sent Atem's heart racing.
"Good thing I'm the most selfish person around."
In other words, we might compliment each other. Atem read between the lines.
He wanted to reply with more light hearted teasing. However Atem's phone went off with another message. Reality struck them with a bitter taste. Knowing that Yugi was getting worried, Atem forced his body to move away from the desk. It was difficult to hide the disappointment of what else he could get away with flirting.
"Thanks again for everything. I'll message you when I have that contract written up. I should get on home before Yugi has another panic attack." This time his cousin might cry about Kaiba holding Atem hostage.
"I'll have Roland drive you home."
"You don't have to - " Atem turned only to freeze at the glare. His heart actually stopped for a few seconds.
"Do not refuse me." A simple command. And yet Atem felt his legs go weak and his head swimming. This time he wasn't dizzy from being hungover.
Do not refuse me. It was a claim. One that Atem would normally feel disgusted about. And yet his body tingled with dark desires.
".... Okay." Atem could barely force his vocal cords to work. His heart raced as Kaiba smirked triumphantly.
From leaving Kaiba's office and the ride to home was a blur. In fact Atem could barely process Yugi hugging him tightly soon as he stepped out of the car. It was if Atem entered a thick fog. And the world wouldn't reach clarity until Atem was pulled inside the Game Shop to be pampered by Yugi and Grandpa.
Here I thought I was the one enchanting him. Instead he's turned the tables around. Atem felt giddy over this development.
"Everything okay in there?" Yugi leaned close to be in Atem's field of vision.
"Hm? Oh, yeah. Just thinking."
"Thinking about what?" Yugi raised a brow.
"What shall we have for dinner? I'll cook." Atem offered, since it was the least he could do after the chaos he created.
Yugi looked at him with a knowing expression but didn't press further. Atem was secretly thankful. He didn't want to explain the growing attraction that was somehow mutual. And with Seto Kaiba of all people. The Seto Kaiba. Atem was going to be feeling lightheaded as he adjusted to this. He could barely fathom how this was happening at all.
I should be quick to get that contract written up. Just to see him again. Atem's heart fluttered at the thought.
Chapter Text
"So how come you never told me about whatever is going on between you and Kaiba?" Yugi pressed that evening.
"Because this is something that's new and I know for a fact you would bug me for any information about what's going on." Atem silently berated himself for his choice of words. When it comes to Yugi, he can't lie. For a long moment his cousin stared.
"Wait. Do you have a crush on him!?" Yugi panicked. The outburst had Atem panic just enough that he couldn't hide the blush on his face.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." His cousin tried too hard to act innocent.
"Liar!" Yugi lightly smacked him with a pillow. The action earned a nervous laugh.
"Okay but seriously. Kaiba?" Yugi was confused in a number of ways. He knew Atem liked danger but the CEO was a questionable kind of dangerous.
"It sort of just happened?" Atem flushed.
"He didn't take advantage of you did he?" Yugi glared. He watched his cousin panic.
"What? No! If anything he was just as disappointed as you were about me going out to drink! In fact, I think he wanted to chew me out at one point."
"What stopped him?" Yugi raised a brow. Kaiba wasn't known for self preservation when he was angry enough. Having faced that temper over Atem proved that.
Atem thought for a moment.
"When I thanked him, I think." That had been the first tone shift between them.
There was something more to this. Yugi couldn't quite put a finger on what. His cousin was lost in thought. And while Yugi can usually read Atem like an open book, this time was different. All he could see was Atem being a mess of jumbled thoughts.
If he's falling, he's falling hard. And he hasn't fully realized that yet. Yugi held two perspectives of this.
On the one hand, he was excited to see Atem opening up to someone outside of family. Yugi had to be the bridge between his cousin and the friend group. Even when among them, Atem was still adjusting and opening up.
What bothered Yugi was the timing.
Family death aside, there was going to be huge changes within. Atem's family settlements, his inheritance, and the fact that Millennium Studios will now have one official owner instead of two. There was a reason why Atem wasn't the sole owner in the beginning. He was too trusting.
Grandpa had wanted to take over the title as co owner, but the sickness had become too rapid for the process to finish. Officially, Grandpa would be more of a consultant than having final say over decisions.
However, this connection with Kaiba can be both a blessing and a curse. Yugi had been watching Kaiba Corp since the dueling arenas helped bring duel monsters to life. And from what he can tell, Kaiba wasn't one to trample on smaller companies just to take over their assets. So Yugi didn't have to worry too much on that part.
The trouble was what sort of attention Millennium Studios will attract if Atem really follows through building a bridge with Kaiba Corp. However, if this magnetic pull Atem felt towards the CEO was mutual, then Yugi can see Kaiba shielding Millennium Studios from the worst of the wolves in the corporate world. At least, that's the hope.
Yugi decided to test this for himself.
"How come he talks to you like a normal person?" Yugi wanted to understand what Atem was doing differently. He had snuck into his cousin's phone to see for himself how Kaiba talked. It was drastic enough Yugi couldn't wrap his head around the fact this was really Kaiba being open to Atem.
"I think he has some strange form of social anxiety. He actually never had a real spoken conversation until last night."
"Are we talking about the same Kaiba?" Yugi was skeptical.
"When I went to return his book, I was brought to his office. I think he thought I was Mokuba and asked about dinner. When he realized his mistake, he couldn't speak. It looked like he would rather fight killer bees than the one word he did speak when Mokuba walked in."
"How did you get his number then?" Yugi had tried searching through the notebook in question after Atem told him about it. However, the page had been removed. Yugi couldn't bring himself to search through all of his cousin's stuff just to see it.
"He confronted me about paying for their entire meal."
"Atem!" Yugi did smack his cousin this time. That restaurant was expensive.
"He was getting chewed out by his brother! I couldn't just leave them like that." Atem nervously defended.
So while Yugi was confused how Seto Kaiba has social anxiety, he didn't press further on what Atem knew. Yugi was going to do his own homework. And since Atem brought up a notebook being used, he brought his own. Although it had been an anxious amount of days waiting until the next time Kaiba decided to grace his presence at school. Which had turned out to be almost another full week.
Yugi had his friends whisk Atem off for something as a small distraction during first break. That was when he made his move. Yugi strolled back into the classroom and sat down in Atem's seat. He did his best putting up a brave face when Kaiba glared.
"First, thank you for looking out for Atem. And I also wanted to apologize in person for my behavior. I look out for Atem like I'm sure you do with Mokuba."
Kaiba regarded him suspiciously. The only difference was the shoulders relaxed. Being protective over family was common ground between them at least. Yugi was also beginning to understand what Atem meant by social anxiety. Now that he was paying attention, Yugi felt like an idiot for not connecting the dots a lot sooner.
"So, I propose a truce. And if you're comfortable, can you write down your number? I have a notebook or if you'd prefer, I'll even hand you my phone. I am only asking because if you're really that interested in Atem, I would feel better knowing that I'll have two means to reach him in case something happens."
Watching Kaiba inwardly panic to an embarrassed anger was interesting to say the least. However the CEO was still being wary. Yugi hadn't expected Kaiba to be this difficult to crack. He wondered how Atem could do this so effortlessly.
"You can trust me not leaking your number. Atem hasn't even shown it to me. And since I hate sneaking around through his stuff, I would rather ask you." That seemed to ease the tension and Kaiba held out his hand.
Yugi handed over his phone in good faith. He watched Kaiba type. Then handed it back. Yugi blinked at the name KS. He didn't question the decision and simply smiled before leaving to catch up with his friends.
During lunch, Atem spent it playing chess once more against Kaiba. This time Yugi watched with interest. The first time around he was shocked to see this like anyone else. Now he was watching to better understand the pair and the bond growing between them. It was an eye opening experience.
Already Yugi can see how at home Atem was when it came to Kaiba. He could see that his cousin was invested for more than friendship with Kaiba. The CEO however was testing patience since he was still hesitant. Yugi knew that his cousin wouldn't place pressure on Kaiba. That was the kind of person Atem was. So it was only a matter of time.
While Yugi was worried that this was Kaiba of all people, he was a little more at ease after watching them play chess. For the time being Yugi felt like this wasn't a bad thing. And strangely, this was what they probably needed, just never realized this yet
During the walk home, Atem's phone went off. Yugi tried his best not to pry. But he couldn't help it when he witnessed his cousin smile fondly. And from the corner of his eye, Yugi caught sight of the name.
Really? Dragon? Yugi tried his best not to make a comment.
Atem paused. Yugi didn't stop until he was a few steps ahead. He turned around to be greeted with suspicious amusement.
"What did you do?"
"What do you mean?" Yugi had an idea what this was about. He almost snickered at the way Atem briefly rolls his eyes.
"Let me rephrase. What did you say to Kaiba?"
"So it's Kaiba? Not Seto? Or Dragon?" Yugi couldn't help himself this time. He laughed at Atem's expression. Yugi had never seen his cousin so red before.
"We're talking about you, not - not whatever I call him." Atem stammered. His attempt to recover was the poorest Yugi had witnessed in a long while.
"Oh, you've got it bad for Kaiba." And the laughter stopped. It was really hitting Yugi just how serious this was getting.
"I..." Atem couldn't even refute. He trailed off, face hotter than before. He couldn't even look up to meet Yugi's gaze.
"Look, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just.... Be careful? And I'm not saying that because it's just him that I'm worried about. He's in a pretty big public spotlight. I don't want anything to happen to you." Yugi didn't even have to point out the gossip at school whenever Kaiba does something new.
"I know. Maybe that's part of his test. To see how I handle the pressure." Atem nodded.
"You can face down a crowd unflinching." A talent Yugi was jealous of.
"Think that's something he'll admire?"
"Since when are you self conscious?" Yugi questioned with a tilt of his head.
"I just... I don't know." Atem squirmed.
"Atem, you're one of the most confident people I know. And not in the way that makes you look like an idiot. If anything, I get the feeling he would want someone with confidence to stand next to him so he won't have to take the full blunt of the public eye. So, as much as I hate saying this, yes, I think that's something he'll admire."
Yugi watched as his words eased Atem's insecurities. He had to remind himself that this was his cousin's first real experience having a crush on someone. And since it's looking to be mutual, everything was new. While Atem dated a few times back at Egypt, it wasn't anything serious. This was clearly turning into something serious.
I just hope Kaiba is willing to put in the same effort he does for his company. Yugi silently hoped. Thus far, the CEO was showing through his actions.
Still wouldn't hurt to send a short warning.
Hey, it's Yugi. Forgot to send a message so you'll have my number until now. And, by the way, for now I approve. Just know I'm watching you.
It was several minutes before Yugi got a reply. In fact he started to expect there wouldn't be one. And when he saw the message, Yugi did a double take.
The feelings mutual.
- Mokuba
Touche. Yugi had to give it to the kid.
Chapter Text
Mokuba decided it was time to do some snooping. He wanted to really look into Atem's history. While Mokuba was surprised to see his brother showing interest in more than just a friend in Atem, Mokuba wasn't going to stop it.
That doesn't mean Mokuba couldn't be a detective. He was simply looking out for Seto. So far from observing quietly, Mokuba thought Atem was just too perfect. No one is perfect. And this near picture perfect personality Atem portrayed was just all around too much in the younger Kaiba's opinion. There had to be something hiding behind that mask.
So Mokuba first had to search for Atem's social media accounts. That proved to be a little troublesome already. He learned that Atem had a different last name online. Mokuba found out Atem's birth name was Mayet, but is currently using Mutou for school.
The only reason why Mokuba found this out was due to looking up Yugi first. Through him it was easy to locate Atem's profile. Here was another snag, though. Atem's profile was set to private. So much for that. However, the profile was linked to an Instaglam account. Mokuba followed the link and to his surprise Atem's profile was for all to see.
The two most recent photos were somewhat old news. The last photo shared was a memorial of Atem's father. Mokuba skimmed past. The chess board Atem bought to bring to school with the caption: looking forward to playing again.
Heh. He only got that because I told him to. Mokuba snickered.
He continued to skim through. There weren't a lot of anything that was interesting. In fact it would seem the last six months Atem's profile rarely had activity. It wasn't until Mokuba went back two years that things started to get interesting.
There was a girl with brown hair and round blue eyes. For the photos they shared together, they were at one point boyfriend and girlfriend. That relationship barely lasted a month, though. Their last shared photo had the caption: we're better off as friends.
"They looked cute together." Mokuba commented to himself.
Through the posts, Mokuba found out her name was Mana. It would seem the two go way, way back. Mokuba quickly scrolled to see Mana was a constant figure in Atem's profile when he lived in Egypt. She had even tagged him in a farewell photo of her hugging him when he left for Domino City. Mana promised to visit some day when she can do so in between her studies.
Curious, Mokuba went through her profile. Immediately he can see that she's bubbly. Mana has at least six new photos everyday. Clearly she was a lot more active as she lived her life despite the college studies.
"She's a college student?" Mokuba had to double check that. Turns out she was a prodigy in her studies to the point of studying college even though she's the same age as Atem.
She also had a lot more photos of when they were dating. And even though Atem was smiling, he wasn't leaning in close like Mana was. It would seem she was the one instigating affection even if it was one sided. Mokuba found that interesting to note before going back to Atem's profile.
That's when he stumbled upon a series of photos with another individual. Mokuba stared, wide eyed at this strange young man who was spinning image of Seto but with tanned skin, being in several photos with Atem. As if the likeness wasn't enough, Mokuba could see them being a lot more openly affectionate.
The way they hugged. The way Atem leaned in to press their cheeks together as they smiled at the camera. Mokuba felt all kinds of weird as nearly each one was almost just as bad as the last. He could see this lasted roughly two weeks before ending abruptly. No explanation. Nothing before or after this short window of happiness between two people.
Mokuba stared at one in particular where this mystery person was kissing Atem's cheek. Just ever so slightly close to an ear. The action earned a bout of laughter from Atem, who was unprepared for it when he took the photo.
"SETO!" Mokuba bolted.
Seto tried his best not to let the image eat at his brain. Although berating Mokuba for stalking proved to be enough of a distraction for that day. However, the image creeped into mind when the world was quiet and work wasn't busy.
It drove Seto insane enough to show up to school later in the week even though he had gone two days before. He blatantly ignored the surprised glances and whispers. Seto even made a point not to immediately glance at Atem like usual.
As if sensing something was wrong, Atem grew nervous. During first break, Atem even came back to the classroom. Seto had been trying to think of a means to word this. However, this might be one of those situations that he would need to be blunt.
"Mokuba was stalking your socials and found an interesting set of photos."
"Care to narrow down which sets?" Atem raised a brow in surprise.
"Someone who looks like me and being a little extra with being affectionate."
"Looks like you....?" For a moment Atem was lost. Then the horror and panic swept in.
"That's my cousin! His name is Set. I hadn't even noticed the similarities. You two are complete opposites in personalities."
"Cousin?" Seto stared in disbelief.
"Would you like me to call him to confirm? If it's the affection that's upsetting you, just know that is how we are. Back in Egypt our culture is a little backwards. Affection towards friends and family of the same gender can be quite the display. Only reason why I haven't shown the same behavior here is because I know people can feel weird about it."
"You're rambling." Seto narrowed his eyes. He watched Atem do his best not to squirm.
"Well... There is something embarrassing."
"Whatever it is, I'm more concerned about the fact he looks like me." That needed to be called out. Or at the very least, a good enough explanation to ease the growing anxiety that crept like a vine since Mokuba showed the photos.
"I swear I didn't see the similarities. He's not like you in terms of authority. Doesn't have a commanding presence, either. Set also prefers Dungeons and Dragons over duel monsters. He's a little bit old school in terms of strategies than card games."
Seto didn't want to believe this. However, as Atem pointed out himself, Seto can already read when he's lying. The CEO could not identify even the smallest of lies. At worst, Seto can read deep embarrassment. That piqued his curiosity to pry.
"What is so embarrassing that's got your panties in a twist?"
"Well... See, we never grew up together. My uncle and father had a bad falling out when I guess Set was just two years old and I wasn't even born yet. And if Mokuba has seen my social, it's easy to say that I have a type for people with blue eyes. So when we met we didn't know that we were cousins. It wasn't until I showed my father a picture that things came to light."
Seto stared with an array of mixed emotions. One, Atem was blushing brightly. That was proving to be too distracting. Two, he couldn't believe how far fetched the explanation was that it was almost hilariously stupid. However, the fact Atem was this embarrassed to the point he might be close to tears soon meant that this really happened.
Looks like Mokuba is getting another lecture. Seto made a mental note to deal with that later.
"That's almost too absurd to believe. The fact it's specific means it did happen, then." Seto found himself relaxing. He had hoped for a simple misunderstanding. Only this wasn't so simple to begin with. He watched the defeat within Atem change into hope.
"... Wait, were you jealous?" Atem stared.
Seto tensed. He almost began to argue that he wasn't, but he could already see Atem read him like an open book. The CEO felt his heart race in both panic and fluster at the sound of Atem laughing.
"If it makes you feel better, you're better at making me feel... what's the term?" For a moment Atem contemplated.
Seto watched with growing interest. He wanted to know. Atem must have sensed his eagerness and felt brave enough to approach closer. Seto went still as a statue when Atem leaned close to whisper in his ear. The CEO's skin tingled with every breath tickling his ear.
"You inspire desires in me that I didn't know I had, Dragon."
"Careful. Have you ever heard the term, curiosity killed the cat?" Seto held back from outright pulling Atem onto his lap. He couldn't bother to hide the burning desires that were flaring as he met Atem's gaze.
"Did you know satisfaction brought it back?" Atem played coy. Even then Seto was close enough to see him shiver.
If I weren't a man of my words, I would say screw the stipulation. Seto grit his teeth.
"Are you close to finishing that contract?" Forcing the words out disappointed the mood. Atem seemed a little hurt. That brought a sense of panic within Seto. An odd reaction to have the want to fix something after saying the wrong thing. This was usually reserved for when Seto was too upset to recognize when Mokuba was trying to help during a stressful day at work.
"If I finish it today, can I see you tonight?" Atem nervously asked. "It's taken me longer than I thought when we're in the middle of big changes within."
"Just say when." Seto recognized that this was leading into dangerous territory. Temptation has always been present in his life since taking over Kaiba Corp. And the CEO took pride that he never fell for mixing pleasures with business.
Atem was walking on the fine line that could make them tumble. Seto knew this. And yet he couldn't bring himself to say no. However, Seto had one last question.
"When you transferred here. What made you approach me in the first place?"
Seto watched Atem blink at the change of topic. The CEO studied Atem as he recalled that day. It wasn't that long of a wait.
"I mentioned that I have a weakness for blue eyes, right? Well, yours stood out to me. At first, your eyes were dark. Uninterested and bored out of your mind. When our eyes met, yours brightened up. It was like the sky was waking up for a new day. And I wanted to see more of that." Atem grew nervous, for this was close to his strange view of being selfish.
Seto was used to people complimenting his eyes. Secretly, this was one of the most annoying and overused means for people to use to approach him. And yet Atem's description felt a lot more intimate.
"In that case, from now on I'm the only one to make you feel wanted." Seto smirked in amusement as Atem nearly fell off his chair. When he was almost too late to save himself, Seto was quick to reach out with an arm. Although his long limbs can be troublesome, moments like these came in handy. Seto tried his best to ignore how it felt holding Atem up by his waist.
Atem couldn't even speak as he nodded.
Notes:
I couldn't think of anything better for a knock off name of Instagram for this world so 🤷
Also, at least this accidental Sweet Home Alabama was with cousins. I've met actual half siblings that didn't know and almost did the dirty so.... Oh, also nothing happened with Atem and Set. Just wanted to make that clear.
Edit: forgot to mention the meaning behind the surname Mayet. It's derived from an Egyptian Goddess Ma'at. She's the goddess of spiritual justice, truth and morality. I also simply took it from my finished work Resolution from fanfic.net because honestly, Mayet fits Atem so well.
Chapter Text
What's holding you up? That message sent a pit sinking in Atem's stomach. Reluctantly he had to explain the issues he was forced to face since his father's passing. He was mildly surprised Kaiba waited until the next day to message.
Remember when I mentioned my uncle and father had a falling out before I was born?
What does that have to do with holding you up with a contract?
Everything. Atem waited a moment before explaining in further detail.
They sort of patched things up when I met Set. However, my uncle seems to think he should be named to take my father's place as co-owner. He's been pushing with every legal means possible to take that seat.
You were only co-owner?
I was too trusting, I guess. Millennium Studios began when I turned a new leaf and was probably too trusting in seeing the good in everyone. So I signed my father on as co-owner. His position was supposed to be going to Grandpa. However, the paperwork didn't process fast enough in time before my father's passing.
And your uncle is trying to force his way in?
Pretty much and we're forced in a corner trying to deal with him first.
Do you have an original copy of signing half ownership to your father?
Why? Atem was a little suspicious of the directness of the inquiry.
If your father was smart, he may have placed something to block your uncle from pulling your company out from under you. Which, given the fact you trusted him to sign half ownership over, I like to believe he did think this through.
I never actually thought of that. I need to look into the records. Atem knew how to access the company's records online. He and his father set that up together after signing half ownership over.
Atem began typing in the email and passcode. Only to stare at the screen claiming it was incorrect. Atem tried again. The same result. After a third attempt and a warning that his phone will be locked out of the company site, Atem went into the email that controlled the login. And to his growing horror he was logged out and he couldn't get back in.
"AIBOU!" Atem was actually torn between reaching out to Yugi or Seto, but since it was a weekend they were currently at home. Thus Atem raced downstairs to meet a confused Yugi and Grandpa.
"I'm logged out of company email and the website!" Atem showed his phone.
"The timing smells like your uncle is playing dirty." Grandpa commented what they all thought.
"I don't know what to do about this." Atem's mind was racing.
"Is there a backup email for this?" Yugi took the phone.
"No that was supposed to be our most secure email!" Atem was in full panic now.
"Were you just talking to Kaiba?"
"I just told him about what's been holding us up when I remembered to look into the company documents." Atem spoke rapidly.
"Okay, I'm calling him."
"Yugi - "
Too late, Atem watched his cousin place the phone to his ear. He panicked as within a few seconds Kaiba answered. Yugi was quicker to bring the CEO up to date than Atem could reach to snatch his phone back.
"Hey, so we've got a situation that's sent Atem into nearly a full panic attack. Hold on, I'm putting you on speaker. It's just me, Atem and Grandpa at home." Yugi was somehow calm as he informed Kaiba. His movements had some shaking, though, as Yugi pressed the speaker button.
"Let me guess, his uncle is being a snake and got into the records to tamper with."
"He probably is but we're locked out of company records and the email used to login." Yugi grew worried as he hadn't thought of tampering yet. Currently they were dealing with a hacking issue.
"What's the strength level of the company's security?"
"Are you thinking of hacking it back?" Yugi pressed.
"That depends on the level of security."
"It's - it's one of those top notch ones where it'll notify the email about a possible hacking. From there you can control the settings to plant a virus on the opposing hacker." Atem couldn't remember the correct terms off hand.
"That's too risky if he has complete control over that email." Seto's voice darked.
"What can we do about this?"
"Are there any physical copies of the original to refute his forged documents?"
"Actually..." Atem had to think. He recalled his father's desk back at home.
"Back home in the office." He confirmed.
"Does your uncle have a key to the home?" Yugi questioned.
"No. Set does, though."
"That's not exactly a good thing." Kaiba's voice darkened.
"I trust Set!" Atem snapped. "Last we spoke, he didn't want any part of this. He's even stepped away from whatever inheritance my uncle was going to leave him."
"Do you trust him enough to get them for you and bring them to you?" Although Kaiba sounded like he would rather swallow bees than ask, he was forcing the words out.
"Yes." Atem trusted Set.
"Atem." Both Kaiba and Yugi spoke with a tone.
"Do you want me to make this anymore awkward and say that he would have agreed to continue our relationship if I let him!?" Atem's voice raised. When no one responded he continued.
"And don't even start with the whole cousin's issue. It's not entirely banned back home. For same sex relationships, it's a topic avoided unless we're raising kids then it's suddenly open world scrutinizing. He was comfortable. I wasn't. He gracefully accepted the rejection but has continued to support me over his own father with this nonsense. In fact, he's shown me by removing himself from his father's will."
"You never even told me this part." Yugi made a face.
"Accidentally starting a relationship with a cousin I never knew is not my proudest of decisions, aibou." Atem countered darkly.
"That's fair." Yugi replied.
"I've barely spoken to him since the move." But that hasn't stopped Set from messaging about life updates.
"Think he can do this for you without alerting your uncle?" Kaiba pressed.
"For me? Yes." Atem hated that he was about to drag Set into this mess. He didn't want Kaiba to meet Set. Or at the very least not this soon.
"See if that can get done. In the meantime I'll ready you a lawyer to view the document to prepare yourselves when he makes a move with a forged one." Kaiba offered before hanging up.
Atem took his phone back.
Thank you is an order. Is there anything I can do to repay you for this? Atem felt horrible that Kaiba was wrapped up into this drama when they're not even together.
The lawyer and suggestions to counter your uncle is all for free. I despise snakes who try to weasel their way into taking what isn't theirs. If you want any further help, you'll have to trust me to read it over with you if you need any backing against him.
Is it bad I do want that or is that too personal to ask? Atem typed out.
That's your call to make.
Seto. Atem pressed. He forgot for a split second they weren't even on first names basis. His heart raced when his messaged was met with a very curt response.
Don't. This is a fine line we're already walking. Just know that I want to do more to help. However, I might be coming in too strong to defend your position. Whatever happens afterwards is up to how your uncle responds to being threatened.
What do you mean? Atem asked.
Whether he'll blast out our business before we're even ready to face the wolves.
You won't have to worry about me. Since Yugi pointed out that Atem can face a crowd unflinching, he might as well prove this to Kaiba.
You sure about that?
I trust you to help me keep Millennial Studios. And, I trust you not pulling it from me in the process. My point is, I trust you with far more than most people should have when in this predicament.
You'll owe me. Are you sure you want to place yourself into that position? This felt like a test.
Yes. Atem replied simply. And yet his heart was beating faster than the moment he somehow found himself wrapped in Seto's arm. For a moment the CEO was silent.
Consider yourself owed. When this is over, I'll be writing the contract instead since I'll be there with you to read the documents in detail. Be sure to inform me when your cousin has flown in and I'll arrange the legal meeting. Do not view the document by yourself.
Atem reread the message a couple of times. It took a lot to process that this was really happening. Beside him, Yugi whistled.
"You two should just kiss and make up already."
"Aibou!" Atem nearly dropped his phone.
"I knew you had it bad. But I was skeptical about Kaiba until today." Yugi continued like making his cousin shout in panic didn't happen.
"Yes, but now I have to play peacemaker between them."
"Between who?" Grandpa studied them.
"Set and - " Can I say Seto at this point?
"Wait, don't tell me. He felt weird after learning about you and Set."
"Maybe more like jealous than weirded out." Atem squirmed as his cousin stared.
"You know, I almost want to follow along just to record you guys and laugh about the absurdity later. But I know Kaiba will chew me out for trying." Yugi wanted to laugh. The only reason why he didn't laugh was just so Atem wouldn't run back to his room crying. He can read that Atem was close to really losing it.
Atem was overwhelmed. Everything was happening too sudden with random twists that he was unprepared for. Now he somehow found himself deeper into a hole that will likely give Kaiba the means to bury him. This wasn't what Atem meant that he liked excitement in relationships. This was borderline impossible.
And we're not even together yet. Atem paused at his own choice of word.
Yet.
A simple word held a strong implication.
"Aibou?"
"Yeah?" Yugi raised a brow.
"Don't let me walk outside today."
"Why?" His cousin stared with concern.
"I don't feel like getting chewed out by Seto for another bar hopping." At Atem's words his cousin laughed. Poor Atem blushed.
"I have his number now. So if you even try to pull something that stupid again, I'm not calling you first. I'll be calling your Dragon and giving him the details before hanging up and ignore my phone for the rest of the evening." Yugi began snickering as Atem panicked both inside and out.
"Please tell me you never told him what his contact name is!?" Atem couldn't believe himself. Out of everything to panic over this was what his mind focused on?
"No. But thanks for the idea."
"Yugi!" Atem began to chase after his cousin who ran up the stairs laughing.
Grandpa sipped his coffee pretending not to hear the two wrestling and crashing into something.
Notes:
Finishing this took a little extra longer because of errands after three day weekend of hell with a toddler, and I also let the chapter stew as I made sure to keep along with the plotline that's developed lol
Chapter Text
Set trusted Atem perhaps too much. He could sense something was going on even though Atem refused to explain why he was being asked to sneak into the Mayet mansion to retrieve papers. Although, Set had a good idea why. What he was more concerned about was meeting some unknown person.
Atem would not explain. This alarmed Set enough to reach out to Yugi. The two hardly talked to earn a friendship. However, Set had heard enough from Atem that Yugi was considered one of his most trusted people.
What's going on with Atem?
That's a broad question to answer. Yugi replied back.
Do you think I'm stupid? Set watched the bubbles indicate a message being typed. Then stop. Only to start again. This wasn't ominous at all.
Overall? He's not doing okay. It's been a spiral since his father passed.
Should I temporarily move in? Set wondered. He had a feeling Atem was putting up a brave face since the death.
That might make things worse.
Why? Set felt his heart sink.
There's someone Atem is very interested to start a relationship with. And that someone found out the little slip up between you two. It's not that he finds that accident disgusting, but he's already jealous.
Why is Atem attracted to this prick? This sounded like this mystery person was a control freak. Or maybe insecure.
This prick is also none other than Seto Kaiba.
The Kaiba? It took a moment for Set to ask. He had to reread the message probably over six times in order to process.
Yep. I've been watching them since Kaiba pulled Atem out of binge drinking one evening and so far they're proving to be a lot more compatible than I first thought.
Are you sure we're talking about the same Atem? With the Seto Kaiba? Set was skeptical.
Trust me, I was just as baffled as you were when I caught on. He's even changed Kaiba's name to Dragon in his contacts.
What exactly am I walking into when I get there? Set knew that if Atem has already given a nickname then it's serious.
Truthfully? I don't know what you should expect. However, if I know Kaiba like I think I do, he's not going to come off as nice towards you.
Why is he part of this at all when this is family business? This made Set's stomach turn.
Kaiba is the one helping with a lawyer. And by the sounds of it, he's planning to do a lot more afterwards.
Should I be concerned Atem is going to lose his company to Kaiba?
No. I know enough that Kaiba isn't like that kind of businessman. His worst traits are immediately putting any companies out of business if they wronged Kaiba Corp. The most recent being some company accidentally sending faulty equipment that Kaiba bought for an upcoming project.
That's not exactly comforting given Atem's past.
What are you talking about?
If you don't know, you're not going to hear it from me. Set was already walking into what can be guessed as a dragons den. He didn't need to also face Atem's wrath.
Excuse me? Yugi pressed.
If you bother to continue to ask me with this, I will temporarily block your number. I won't spill behind Atem's back. That's something you have to ask him. You can even say that I refuse to elaborate.
What the hell is so bad that not even I don't know about anything?
My guess? He doesn't want you to know so you won't be scared of him. My apologies for accidentally opening Pandora's box, but I refuse to explain any further on this matter.
Why is it always you and accidents? At the inquiry Set chuckled.
I have that strange sort of luck I guess.
I can't tell if it's good or bad luck.
Probably both. Set had given up on figuring that out a long time ago. He accepted that he somehow played a part in the truth coming out even if he himself wasn't aware of something.
Set never heard anything from Atem. So Yugi must have made the decision to ask questions after this meeting. Which Set had to give Yugi credit to be patient. By the sounds of it, Atem was already too stressed. Set hated that Atem was forced into a corner at all.
Grabbing the requested documents, followed by the flight was a blur. Set was a little unprepared to be first met with a secretary from Kaiba Corp. This confirmed Yugi's claim and the knot in Set's stomach intensified. This was all happening out of the blue and Set was out of his element as he followed the polite woman.
"Thank you for your help." Atem greeted warmly. Set smiled, relieved to see Atem in person. Briefly his eyes glanced at the intimidating presence not far back.
Already Set understood Yugi's claim about the jealousy part. Kaiba's eyes expressed heated glares as they observed. Set focused on his cousin. He wasn't intimidated by the CEO at all.
"You actually look better than I imagined you would be." Set wondered if Kaiba played a part in that.
"Well, it would have helped if you hadn't brought up my past to Yugi." Atem switched to Egyptian. Beyond them, Kaiba openly stared.
Ah. Should have expected to be cornered. Set silently berated himself for believing that he was in the clear to be lectured.
"I thought you shared everything with Yugi?" Set countered calmly. He also made a point not to respond in his home language.
"You above all should know why that's bad blood to bring up." Atem's voice turned sharp. He even glared, and for a second Set wanted to run.
"Would you rather that darkness within you is exposed by me in the most gentle means as possible, or when someone like my father will soon step too far out of line and you scare everyone?" Set went to caress Atem's cheek. Halfway through he remembers they're not alone. Set reminded himself that open affection was considered odd outside of home. Still, Set didn't immediately pull away.
Silently Atem reached with one hand to Set's. The grip was tight. But that didn't explain the faintest of shivering from the arm as Atem pulled Set's hand away. He tried his best not to show the sting in his heart from the action.
"You forced my hand to explain to one of the most important people in my life about a past that I'm not proud of. And when this is over, I have to explain it again to someone else." Atem was no longer speaking Egyptian. His voice was cracking and Set felt the guilt like a tsunami.
"My deepest regrets for doing so. If there's anything I can do to make up for it, just say the word." Set was serious about fixing this.
"I don't know if I want to take up that offer." Atem let go. His indecision cut deeper than the guilt. Set wished he could turn back time and keep his mouth shut. He never meant to hurt Atem.
Set wanted to reassure that he's just a phone call away. But he couldn't bring the words out. He was uncertain if that was due to the guilt Set was drowning in. Or perhaps it was due to their silent spectator. Kaiba was a presence that could not be ignored.
The meeting proceeded without any drama. It was mostly filled with learning everything that Atem's father placed to protect him and the company after his leave. Interestingly, there was a clause specifically against Aknadin should he try something underhanded to place himself in the company.
My uncle planned well ahead it seems. Set once more admired the man. Truthfully, he wished he hadn't missed out on getting to know his uncle. He only had a few years before the sickness took his uncle away. Two years wasn't enough to make up for the years missed.
When the meeting was over, Set didn't put up an argument when Atem left without offering to have Set over for dinner. He could see that his cousin was dazed. Besides, Set didn't want to ask in front of Kaiba. Speaking of the CEO, Set warily watched as Kaiba approached. Set noted that Kaiba didn't have the lawyer present.
"What was that about earlier before the meeting?" Kaiba's voice was curt and dark.
"You will have to be patient and wait for Atem to explain. As I've already told Yugi, I won't go behind Atem's back." Set almost smiled at the way the CEO bristled. Being told to wait likely wasn't something Kaiba was used to hearing from people.
"And your affection towards him?" Kaiba hissed.
"If you're so insecure, you should also speak to Atem on the matter. However, if it makes you feel any better, just know that I won't cross Atem's boundaries. I have accepted his rejection to continue. I adore him enough to respect him even if it hurts seeing him with someone."
"How?" Kaiba blinked in surprise.
"One of my strongest traits is also a boon. I'm too selfless. He's trying to learn a balance. I can already see you've done more improvement than Yugi or I could." Set was being truthful in his compliment. Before Kaiba, Atem wouldn't have pushed Set's hand away like that. In a lot of ways Atem's actions spoke volumes more than his words. Which was a lot since Atem meant every word he spoke.
"... We really are total opposites." Kaiba was speaking more to himself.
"Were you stuck on the fact we look too eerily alike? Because seeing you in person now, I can see why you were nervous. I didn't connect the physical traits until today." It would be a lie for Set to not feel disappointed. However, there was more to than being cousins that had Atem refuse.
"Heh. Atem said something similar." Kaiba was growing more confident in his stance with Atem. He no longer viewed Set as a threat.
"Just in case Atem doesn't immediately tell you, I can't under any good consciousness leave without warning you that he might unleash his full wrath on my father. There's a reason why I placed myself out of this situation. I don't want to get caught in the crossfire and watch my family tear each other apart."
"You're already involved the moment you picked up those documents." Kaiba narrowed his eyes.
"Only because Atem asked. There's a lot that I won't say no to when it comes to him. But I still won't get involved anymore. Whatever happens in the fallout, I'll still support Atem. Depending on the damage he creates though, I might not be around for a while. So as much as I feel weirded out by you as a person who is interested in Atem, I do approve of you two becoming something more."
"I don't need your approval." Kaiba bristled.
"No. But it should help ease your anxieties that I won't whisper in Atem's ear. I'm not that kind of person anyway." Set shrugged off as he turned to leave.
"What should I be prepared for in terms of learning about this so called dark past?" Kaiba inquired with all seriousness.
"Hm. The most I can safely say is that there were deaths. And no, no illegal substances played any part. Just outright bad blood between Atem and someone else. Bad enough there were casualties." Set couldn't bring himself to explain further. Thus he continued walking.
"... By Atem's hand?"
"Physically? No. But his words carry a lot of weight and authority than people realize at first glance." Set exited through the door. All the while he felt eyes watching.
Chapter Text
Now that he's met this cousin, Seto can understand what Atem meant about the personalities. He viewed Set too soft as well as a pushover. While Seto didn't like that feelings were still lingering, Atem showed where his choices were. The display earlier was comforting to see.
However, Seto was concerned for Atem's mental state. He had silently watched as Atem came to terms that all of this was real. Seto wasn't good comforting people. Plus, they weren't alone as they went over every aspect of the documents. Which, Seto wished he had met Atem's father. The man had been smart to include a clause on the off chance his own brother tried to worm his way into the company.
Don't you dare start going out to drink. Seto messaged a few hours after the meeting. For a long time he didn't get a response.
Can I see you? The timid question was received just after dinner. Seto replied without hesitation.
Where are you? I'll arrange a ride for you.
Game Shop.
Seto was slightly suspicious that Atem didn't say home. He arranged for Roland to retrieve him. Upon their return Atem seemed upset and embarrassed all in one.
"What happened?" Seto stared.
"Yugi used my phone to message you."
"You've been drinking." Seto glared. He can tell with the slightly slurred speech.
"I didn't go to a bar this time." Atem defended.
"Like that's any different. My point is, you shouldn't turn to drinking every time when shit hits the fan." Seto's voice darkened. He watched Atem squirm.
"I didn't want to be a bother." Those pretty violet eyes looked down.
"With me you're free to be selfish. In fact, I encourage it." Seto wondered what it would have to take to beat this fact into Atem's head and accept it.
"Don't. Unless you want me to throw myself on you, that's not fair to tempt me." Atem's voice was shaking. It took Seto a moment to also see that Atem was shivering.
Without hesitation Seto pulled Atem into his lap. Atem was so unprepared he couldn't catch himself in time. While their first kiss was uncoordinated and unplanned at first, it quickly grew passionate. Seto can taste whatever fruity drink Atem had.
While Seto wasn't one for fruity alcohol, whatever Atem had been drinking was strong. It was enough to remind Seto this night that it may not be the best timing to go all the way. Slowly the kiss eased off. When they finally pulled away they couldn't fully bear to be apart. So their foreheads touched, eyes locked.
"You're mine now." Seto wasn't going to let Atem go. He smirked as the lithe body in his lap shivered.
"I've been yours for a while now, dragon." Atem teased as he wrapped his arms around broad shoulders. One of his hands gently played with Seto's hair.
Normally, Seto despised being touched. Especially with his hair. Atem was gentle with his affection. Seto actually found the touch comforting. He actually hummed in approval. The smile from Atem was magnetic and Seto claimed another kiss.
"Does that make you the princess I keep trapped in my tower?" Seto teased.
"Princess!?" Atem was horrified.
"Keep that up and I'll get you all of the lingerie dresses. The first being the Little Red Riding Hood." Seto meant it as a threat. But the deep blush on Atem's face sealed the deal.
"... You're already planning on it." Atem accused.
"Oh, yes. Just the idea of bending you over every surface available while you're in a dress is appealing." At Seto's description there was a strange sound from Atem's throat. A soft whine accompanied by shaking. Strong legs tightened their hold around Seto's waist.
"What's this? Are you excited for the idea? Does this mean you like being powerless? To be at my mercy?" Seto watched with growing intent as Atem squirmed. As he moved, Seto felt the growing excitement between Atem's legs. With every ounce of control, the CEO forced Atem's hips to stay still. The task proved to be difficult as a desperate sound came from Atem's throat.
"You're drunk." Seto reminded darkly.
"Even if I'm consenting?" Atem pressed.
"I don't want our first time when you're drunk. I want you to remember with clarity how I make you feel." Seto snarled as he gripped at Atem's thighs. He held on hard enough that Atem couldn't squirm and tease.
"I..." Atem was a mixture of strong emotions. He couldn't even express in words so instead he leaned in for a tender kiss. This soothed the hot excitement between them.
For the remainder of the night they remained like this. It hadn't taken long for Atem to fall asleep. Seto stayed in his chair. Since this was his office chair, he had spent too many naps in it already. Which was why it was the most comfortable money can buy. Like this, Seto easily typed away on his laptop.
The latest project was catching up to the deadline that he didn't need to do much currently. Seto focused more on writing up that contract. He made it fair for both companies. And as much as he hated it, he placed in a clause should something go wrong. This was always done out of habit. But this time Seto made sure both can walk away mostly unscathed.
Seto had seen first hand how Atem's father cared enough to ensure his future. A part of Seto was jealous for Atem to experience that kind of bond. However he learned a long time ago that the past can never be changed. It's the future that Seto had control over and forge as he pleased. And since Atem's father put so much effort to protect him and Millennium Studios, Seto kept the contract fair.
As Seto finished the finer details, Mokuba walked in. For his part, Seto's younger brother didn't bat an eye at the sight of Atem. Seto was briefly confused.
"You two finally locked in?" Mokuba teased.
"I'm surprised you support this?" Not that Seto would allow his brother have much of a say on matters like this. He cared enough to know Mokuba's feelings towards relationships. However in the past Mokuba refused to be this accepting to potentials. Atem has become the first to make it this far and earn approval.
"He makes you happy. And he puts in the effort even if I'm bullying him. Besides, Yugi is just as protective of him as I am of you, so I think this is a good thing." Mokuba smiled at his brother's confused look and continued.
"It means that you both have someone to knock some sense into your heads."
"Please. I'm not scared of Yugi." Seto rolls his eyes. Of course he knew about the little incident of Mokuba using his phone to respond to Yugi's message. The only reason the CEO didn't respond himself was because he didn't see Yugi as a threat.
"Gotta hand it to him, though. He sure isn't scared of you, either." Mokuba snickered.
"Let the pipsqueak try." Seto could care less.
"I would pay to see that." Mokuba laughed.
"Why pay when you're my brother? You get to watch any drama for free."
"Yeah. But I'm saying that I would pay if it's some showdown between you and Yugi. It sounds entertaining enough to place bets."
As much as it sounds like fun, Seto had no reason to go out of his way to piss Yugi off. Besides, he recalled how Atem called Yugi as one of the most important people in his life. Speaking of Yugi. Seto reached for his phone.
Thanks for handing him off. Just so you know you won't get him back until morning.
I already kind of figured. Yugi replied.
How is he? The inquiry wasn't a long wait.
We're official now. And before you chew me out, no, I refuse to go all the way when he's drunk. Seto can already predict Yugi's thought process.
I wasn't going to ask but thank you for somehow proving more and more you're a good match. I hate to admit but I was a little worried at the beginning.
Why? Seto wondered.
You come off as holier than thou at school. Your reputation as CEO of Kaiba Corp isn't a good reference to how you are as a person, either.
Seto agreed that he wasn't the best person to socialize with. He would rather avoid any if it's not business related. And yet somehow Seto crossed paths with Atem and has quickly become an important person in his life.
Some point Seto must have fallen asleep. He awoke as Atem was coming to. Of the pair, Atem was slower to wake up. Seto watched with amusement as Atem blinked several times. Then he shifted and they both noticed the morning wood. Seto smirked as he reached between them.
"Wait - Seto - I'll ruin the pants!" Atem panicked but refused to push away. As Seto guessed the previous night, Atem liked being under his mercy. Even as Seto stroked him through the dark leather pants.
"Be a good boy and shut up about ruining your clothes. I'll buy you a new pair before sending you home. That is if I decide to let you go. I just might keep you here for the day." Seto growled out. He was a little more focused on payback.
The way Atem melted as he gave in almost had Seto want to bend him over the desk to go all the way. The CEO worked faster without easing up the pressure. Soon Seto had Atem panting. Wanting to hear more sounds, Seto claimed a mark on Atem's neck. He sucked on the trapped skin to leave a dark hickey.
"Seto!" The action had done more than earn a delicious shout. Atem spasmed through his orgasm, leaving him a moaning mess. Seto slowed his movements but didn't stop until the throbbing stopped. By then Atem's whole body was shaking.
"See? That wasn't so bad, was it?" Seto chuckled with dark amusement.
"You're..." Atem was too embarrassed to say out loud that the CEO now had his own little problem between his legs.
"If you're offering to help, I'm not letting you go home until tonight." Seto warned. He was dead serious on this threat.
"I'm all yours, dragon." Atem didn't hesitate.
And that was how after a day of exploring each other, Seto and Atem were left satisfied taking this big step. Not to mention with the amount Seto was willing to spoil Atem with clothes. It had taken a lot to convince Atem to go home while wearing an entirely new outfit bought and paid for by Seto. He could already imagine Yugi's shocked confusion soon as Atem walked through the door.
BONUS
"Welcome home!" Yugi greeted cheerfully only to do a double take at several details at once.
One, Atem's clothes were different than when he left. Black sleeveless shirt. A new pair of leather pants. Gothic style wrist bands. And a matching collar.
"... What's with the collar?"
"Uh... nothing." Atem blushed.
"You better tell me before I check underneath!"
"Catch me first!" Atem let go of his bag that likely had his old clothes before racing up the stairs.
Yugi successfully tackled his cousin at the top of the steps. Downstairs Grandpa was still humming as he cooked. The only time the humming stopped briefly was when Yugi shouted.
"I knew it! You went all the way with Kaiba!"
"AIBOU!"

Yugi casually setting them up just to get Atem to stop with his bad habits is funny to me

"So what's going on between you and Kaiba?"
The inquiry startled Atem to simply blink and stare at Joey. Atem briefly glanced at Yugi for clarification. To his disappointment, his cousin was just as caught off guard. So Yugi had no insight to this random question.
"What do you mean?" Atem tried the innocent approach.
"You two seem to be getting close. I mean, you play chess with him." Joey flashed a grin.
"I thought it would be something fun." Atem was looking forward to the next chess match when Seto was going to attend.
"So how did you know he plays chess?"
"It was just a guess." Atem couldn't explain that it had been Mokuba giving him the tip.
"Think you can challenge him to a duel?"
"That's up to him." Truthfully, Atem was content with not playing against Seto.
Atem had taken to watching videos of tournaments his dragon participated. Seto wasn't kidding about his claim of never being defeated. Seeing the confidence shine brightly on screen was something to behold. This was a stark contrast to school or even the office.
While Atem never participated in tournaments, he was well known back at home. In fact, his reputation was a mix of bad and good. Atem had hoped to leave the past behind him.
"Say, I've never gotten the chance to duel you! So how about it?"
"I don't know." Atem grew nervous.
"What, you afraid to lose? C'mon! I'll even take you to the arcade with a duel platform!" Joey insisted. When Atem hesitated, the blond continued.
"Just a friendly duel, right?"
"Well, it can't hurt, I suppose."
That afternoon Atem found himself at the arcade with the rest of the group. While the majority are excited, Atem could read his cousin was a little nervous. He sent a reassuring smile before stepping onto the platform. Atem shuffled his deck with care.
Somehow at the end, they earned themselves a crowd. Their duel caught attention. Apparently Joey was a local favorite to rise from the bottom in his aim to reach tournament level. It wasn't often that he lost. Atem felt his stomach turn upon seeing that he had been recorded.
How fast will this travel? Atem wondered.
He didn't have to wait long. Within the hour, Atem's phone rang. He pulled away from helping Yugi with the dishes to answer the call. Atem prepared himself internally.
"How are you that good at dueling and never entered a tournament?"
"I can't. At least, not for a while."
"Why?"
Atem took a deep breath.
"Do you have time? This is best to explain in person."
"Hold on. Does this have something to do with your mysterious dark past?"
"You could say that." Atem would rather go into detail face to face.
"I'll send Roland." Seto replied before hanging up.
Atem finished his chores with Yugi so his cousin didn't have to do them alone. Roland's familiar knock announced his arrival. Yugi sent him a look, but didn't make a comment. Atem waved farewell to Grandpa before following Roland.
The ride seemed longer than normal. Perhaps it was the nervousness. Atem did his best to keep himself together. He placed faith in Seto to listen. Atem felt trouble brewing as he entered the office.
"While you were being picked up, something interesting started circulating online about you."
Atem felt his stomach drop.
"Your dark past has something to do with some sort of gang, doesn't it?" Seto's eyes coldly glared like glaciers.
"To put it into perspective, I took it upon myself to play mind games with criminals. It was a peaceful means to entertain them, while also having them realize the error of their ways. Things evolved from there. I ruled strictly that no lives are to be lost. I was given the name Pharaoh because of my ruling. However, my strictness didn't prevent a rival from taking things too far and started killing some of my friends." For a long moment Atem endured the silent stare. He tried his best to remain still, to bare himself unflinching.
"Something tells me you snapped."
"When my childhood friend was killed. He paid the price for protecting me with his life. I reached a very dark place in my heart. And while I didn't lay a hand on my rival and his friends, I was still responsible for their deaths. It's something I'm not proud of." Atem forced his eyes to hold Seto's gaze.
"What did you do?" Seto grew curious. There was still caution in his tone.
"I got into their heads. I learned of every mistake, every detail of their lives, and turned all of that around on them just to break them. From there, I was casting judgment for every. Single. Evil deed."
Atem took a moment to pause. When Seto had no questions, he continued. His voice held strong at first. His voice started shaking towards the end as his throat tightened.
"I pushed until I watched them die. And the worst part was? I still felt empty. After all of that, I couldn't feel anything. The world was numb and cold. Taking justice in my hands left me with nothing to be proud of."
Atem began to tear up. He hated that even after explaining all of this to Yugi, it still hurt. The raw pain clawing at his heart to rip into pieces. All of those lives gone didn't ease the loss of his friend Mahad. Nothing can change death.
"I disbanded my gang after personally removed the rival one by one. I couldn't continue. Morally, I shouldn't even be walking free. It had taken everything between Mana and Set to keep me from turning myself in. Even my father had to make me promise to stay. Shortly afterwards, he was diagnosed with cancer." Atem looked down as the tears began to swell.
"Looking back, I guess my father getting sick was my karma for being responsible for the lives lost."
"So you feel responsible in part for your father's death. That's why you started drinking." Seto connected the dots. Atem could only nod. His throat was too tight.
"While that's heavier than I thought it was going to be, that doesn't change anything between us."
Warily Atem looked up through tearful eyes. Seto remained calm and regal. Some piece of Atem felt the urge to kneel. He resisted only because he was in shock. Atem's heart raced with relief and adoration.
"You really mean that?"
"My Pharaoh, would I really say something like that and not mean it?"
At the new nickname Atem felt his knees go weak. While it made his stomach turn just to hear that name again, his heart reeled from the way Seto spoke it intimately. Atem felt his cheeks flush deeply.
"Now you know how it feels when you call me your dragon." Seto smirked triumphantly.
"Oh, but my dragon, I adore watching your eyes burn with lust." Atem turned the tables. Somehow even when he felt the absolute worst, Seto could lift him up.
"Just like that." Atem smirked as Seto's eyes changed just as he described. He forced his legs to move closer to lean over. He watched as Seto casually pressed a button for his secretary.
"Cancel the remaining slots of appointments for the day. I am not to be disturbed." His dark tone spoke volumes. Before there could be a confirmation, Seto reached and pulled Atem into a familiar lap.
"Even after learning about my past, you still have the mood for this?" Atem's hands felt over the CEO's chest playfully.
"I told you, I'm selfish. When you give me that kind of attention, of course I'm going to return the favor." Seto gripped at Atem's hips.
"So I get an evening with you?"
"A whole night. I'm not letting you go after learning all of that. If you follow old habits, Yugi will be calling me that you're out drinking again."
This time Atem blushed from embarrassment. He should feel upset being called out like that. However, Atem knew that his dragon was probably right. He leaned in for a kiss. Soon the kiss left Atem breathless. He felt his own legs weaken.
Hands explored and Atem pulled away with a gasp from the touches. That didn't mean Seto stopped. He even went so far as to remove the choker with one hand. Teeth began to mark away possessively.
"Seto - my dragon, it's still sore." Atem began shaking.
"I don't see you stopping me." Seto smirked into heated skin.
Atem leaned into the CEO. His dragon chuckled and Atem couldn't help the shiver. The longer he finds himself falling, the more Seto's voice can unravel him.
It feels too early to say it. Atem didn't want to scare Seto. So for now he remained patient.

Chapter Text
He's making his move. The text was something Seto had been waiting for.
He followed you here? Seto hoped so. This would make things easier.
Yes. He's trying to corner me in the shop.
I'll send Roland.
Can I bring Yugi?
If you think that will help. Seto would rather the pipsqueak be left behind. However, he learned the blaringly annoying lesson that Yugi was one of the most important people in Atem's life. The two were each others shadows, just like Mokuba was to Seto.
Seto quickly changed into an all white suit and blue tie. After all, first impressions were important. He arranged a pristine office to be chosen for this unscheduled meeting. His thought process was that, if they discussed everything in his office, it would seem too personal for Kaiba Corp to get involved. Thus an office in the halfway up the tower was chosen with a good view of Domino City. It wasn't long of a wait.
"What's the meaning of this?" An older gentleman regarded Seto with suspicion.
Seto studied Aknadin in return. For an old man, he was tall. Almost his height. The violet color was deeper than Atem or Yugi's. His white beard and long hair made him seem frail in comparison to his sharp eyes.
"Welcome to Kaiba Corp. Normally I would be extending a warmer welcome, however, you haven't exactly been a model citizen."
"Excuse me? Has anyone taught you respect for your elders?" Aknadin bristled.
"Oh, plenty. But only to those who deserve respect." Seto wanted to say more, but a warning glance from Atem stopped him.
"Why are we here? This is a family matter." Aknadin changed tactics.
"I'm involved so long as Atem wants to partner with me on a project. However, we cannot move forward until this matter is absolved." Seto crossed his arms.
"How did you get involved with Kaiba Corp?" The old man suspiciously studied Atem.
"Why does that matter? We're here to settle this power struggle within my company." Atem held firm.
"Let's take a seat, shall we?" Seto interrupted Aknadin's retort. Silently with a fury that could be felt in the entire room, Aknadin took a seat. Seto sat across. Atem and Yugi sat on the CEO's side. Immediately the elder man grew nervous at the obvious numbers against him.
"While I can understand my nephew's outrage, I have a clear and cut case with official documents that my brother wanted to ensure Atem stays safe."
"Oh, really? Would you care to present these to us?" Seto was almost too eager to see these forgeries.
As if sensing this, Aknadin hesitated. However he must have felt confident enough to unlock his suitcase to bring out the papers. Seto studied them with growing amusement. Already he can see the changes. Since a young age, he had been trained to spot forgeries. And this attempt was almost a sad attempt. The only piece that caught his attention was the signature. It wasn't printed on.
"So, you're not only forging legal documents, you've also forged your own brothers signature." Seto placed the papers down.
"I assure you, these are legal!"
"Really? Then why does Atem have the original documents?" As if on cue, Atem placed them next to the fakes.
"How did you get these?" Aknadin demanded.
"My father's office back at home. Also, now that I look at them, yours wasn't notarized." Atem pointed out the official stamp.
Seto hadn't even noticed that detail. He glanced to see that the notarization was indeed missing from the fakes. Seto couldn't help a laugh at the idiocy. He could care less of the startled looks from the others.
"So, since you've dug yourself a rather deep grave, there's only two options. One, you quietly give up your fight to weasel your way into Millennium Studios."
"... Dare I ask what the second option be?" Aknadin held a decent poker face.
"You continue this fight, and you'll also be facing against Kaiba Corp."
"Your company has no business to meddle!" Aknadin glared heatedly.
"It will the moment Atem signs this contract I've written for us to partner on a project. After all, he can't uphold his end of the deal if you're going to take up his time squabbling over a place that isn't yours to take." Seto placed the contract on the table. Atem pulled the paper close as he and Yugi read it over carefully.
"You can't seriously consider - "
"I have." Atem signed.
Seto had already signed, but he added the dates. Then the contract was handed to Yugi to sign as a witness. Silently the CEO was grateful for Atem's last minute call to bring his cousin. Three signatures stand a higher chance against Aknadin's words.
"Now I have every right to step in." Seto crossed his arms with triumph. The mix of shocked and horror burning with anger will forever be burned in Seto's memories. Aknadin's expression rivaled the day Seto beat Gozaboro in a chess match.
"You planned this as a trap and corner me." Aknadin accused.
"You're the one using dirty tactics just to get your way like a snake." Seto countered. "It's people like you that I despise in the corporate world."
"I see. You know, you almost look identical to my son. Did you know that my son and Atem used to date? I wonder if you're just a replacement?"
Before Seto could respond, Atem stood up. The sudden movement startled the rest. For a moment Seto tasted fear as he read the dark fury within Atem's eyes. The red was almost a little more prominent in the royal violets.
"That is enough! Whatever goes on between myself and Seto have nothing to do with this! And you, you dare bring Set into this argument when he's not even here!? Your own son who wants nothing to do with this mess!? How low can you go, uncle!" Atem wasn't yelling. However his voice carried all the same.
For once Aknadin was speechless.
"I am beginning to understand why my father distanced himself from you. After all you've done, I am ashamed to be related to you. And if this is how I feel, I can't imagine the weight on Set. If I haven't seen the evidence of your greed, I wouldn't believe you to be this disloyal to your own family. About the only good deed you've done in your life was raise Set right. Otherwise by all accounts you are a spineless snake."
I can see why he was given the nickname Pharaoh. He carries the authority of casting judgment like one. Seto could hardly breathe as he watched this unfold.
"Other me...?" Yugi timidly grasped Atem's hand. Immediately the fury dissipated like mist. And like that the tension in the air broke as Atem sat down. Underneath the table, his free hand searched for Seto's. He gripped tightly in reassurance.
"I concede." Aknadin gave up. He stood up and began to leave. His footsteps echoed in the office.
Slowly the door closed.
"Well, that went well." Seto broke the silence.
"Not entirely." Atem looked down.
"You got him to give up." The CEO pointed out.
"But at what cost? I don't know him well enough to predict how he will take this."
"Let's worry about that later, okay? You did great. Even when you went off, all you did was speak the truth." Yugi smiled.
"I suppose." Atem wasn't all that convincing.
"I'll leave you two be. I can imagine you two have business to discuss now. Just be sure to at least visit home some point to celebrate okay?" Yugi winked before taking his leave. Seto smirked as Atem blushed.
"So, how about we celebrate? After that display of yours earlier, I want to spoil you." Seto wasn't outright going to say that witnessing that side of Atem turned him on.
"Spoil me?" Atem blinked in confusion.
"Well of course. I have seen why you were given the nickname Pharaoh. And I approve. You should embrace that side of you more often." Seto was pleased to see his Pharaoh blush brightly from the praise.
Mine. After today, Seto knew that he wanted to keep this relationship long term.
For the remainder of the day Seto upheld his promise to spoil Atem. Clothes shopping, a private lunch date. The CEO even paid for Atem have a full spa after lunch. When he later had Atem brought back to Kaiba Corp, Seto noticed that his lover was a lot more cheerful.
That didn't stop Seto from arranging dinner ordered from a high end restaurant to be delivered. As they ate, neither Seto nor Atem noticed Mokuba occasionally spying. The younger Kaiba was happy for them mainly because he hadn't seen Seto like this in years. While Mokuba felt a tad jealous, he was content with the way things were.
A phone vibrated.
Mokuba heard it from Atem's bag. At first he tried to ignore it. But the vibration kept coming back. So Mokuba snuck his hand in to take a look. All of the missed calls were from Set. It took Mokuba seeing the contact photo to remember that this was the cousin from Egypt.
Wait, isn't this the one Atem dated?
Mokuba hung up the call. He immediately unlocked the phone to sneakily take a photo of the pair to send to the cousin. Mokuba grinned as he caught one of the best photos of his brother smiling yet.
There was a pang of jealousy cutting deep. Mokuba forced aside the emotion. Other people have the right to make Seto happy. So long as his brother was happy, then Mokuba shouldn't interfere. However, this Egyptian cousin should learn to stay in his lane.
Mokuba sent the photo in a message. He chuckled as he could see that the message was read. And Set never typed a message. In fact, he stopped calling. Mission accomplished, Mokuba put the phone back where he found it.
That'll teach him. Mokuba sauntered away.

And like that I believe we are back to regular schedule.

Atem didn't get the news until it was too late. In fact, he wasn't even aware of the news going on in Egypt until Marik called. Since it was rare for his friend to call at all, he answered. Nevermind that it was in the middle of his first break.
"Have you heard?"'
"Heard what?"
"Your cousin didn't tell you!?"
"Slow down. What happened?" Now Atem was on high alert.
"Your uncle killed himself in public execution style, ranting about you and Kaiba. Is it true? That you're messing with him?"
Atem froze. He was so still a statue that he couldn't breathe. Yugi paused in whatever conversation he was having with his friends. Following Yugi's example, the others regarded Atem with concern.
"What happened?" Yugi asked.
"Hello? You still there?"
"Excuse me. I need to make another call." Atem hung up before Marik could answer. With tears threatening to fall he dialed for Set. He hadn't opened messages to dial. Atem went straight to dialing since he knew the number.
"Whatever help you're looking for to clean up this mess won't be from me." The sharp tone cut through Atem's heart.
"I'm not asking for help!" He snapped. Tears fell and his voice cracked.
"I'm asking how you are. I hadn't meant for any of this to happen. I didn't know he would do that! If I had known, I wouldn't have said anything."
"And what did you say?" Set demanded.
"All I did was call him out for trying to take what wasn't his!"
"You know better! After the mess with Thief King, you lost yourself to say just the right thing to send my father over the edge! Now I'm left with both of our fathers funerals!"
"I'm sorry!"
"Sorry won't cut it this time!"
"At least let me help with the preparations."
"No. You've given up that right when you left home."
"Please don't do this. You may have the right to your father's remains, but mine is my responsibility."
"No. You trusted me to foresee that your father's wishes were granted. I'm arranging a double funeral."
"... Does this mean I'm uninvited?"
For a moment, Set hesitated. After a heavy sigh, he replied in a dark tone. It hurt Atem to hear such venom in his cousin's voice. And he knew whatever bond between them was forever tarnished.
"I'll send you details once it's been confirmed. And don't you dare bring Kaiba with you. The last thing our fathers need is to be the source of public scrutiny during their funeral." Set promptly hung up.
Atem started crying. He felt his world crushed. Yugi promptly pulled Atem out of the hallway and into an unused classroom. When he tried to ask for details, Atem couldn't form words. Instead he cried harder.
"Can I see your phone?" Yugi gently asked. Atem handed it over before sitting down on a chair as he felt dizzy.
Yugi noticed the last call was to Set. He opened up messages and gasped. Although he was afraid for Atem's mental state, he held up the phone to show the photo. Atem blinked a few times just to be able to see.
"I... I didn't take that! I don't even know who!" Atem began shaking.
"Someone's going to answer for this."
"Wait, Yugi - "
Too late, Atem watched his cousin dial up Seto. As punctual, the CEO didn't leave them ringing for long. Yugi went straight to business.
"Whose idea was it to take a picture of you two being romantic then sending it off to Set?"
"Excuse me? What in the hell are you talking about?" Seto was already in a mood.
"You heard me!"
"Whatever it is you're accusing me of, you're wasting your time! Now put Atem on the phone, we've got an issue."
"Screw that! Atem is in no mind state right now to bother with whatever is going on! Not after whatever fallout happened between him and Set!"
"Like that's supposed to make me feel bad? Our companies are being dragged through the mud because of that idiot uncle of his pulling that public suicide stunt ranting about us!"
"Wait, are you serious?" Yugi couldn't believe what he was hearing. But one look at his cousin and Yugi knew it was true.
"Do you see me laughing? Because I would be if I were joking. So do me a favor and put Atem on the phone. Now."
"Sorry, but you're going to have to wait until he's calmed down."
"Aibou - " Atem reached for his phone. Yugi pressed the red button. In his panic Atem rushed forward and the two lost balance. They fell to the floor in a loud thump. Joey, Tristan and Teá opened the door in concern.
"Is everything okay?"
Atem had to get up and retrieve his phone that had fallen out of Yugi's hand. To his horror, the screen was cracked. He tried to unlock it, but the screen was too damaged to read his finger. Small chips of glass cut his thumb.
"I need to go." Atem wasn't going to bother wasting time to buy a new one.
"Are you seriously going to him after all that has happened?" Yugi challenged.
"What happened wasn't his fault! That responsibility lies on me! Now if you will excuse me, I have a mess to clean up." Atem snapped through hiccups.
He left before Yugi could catch him. Atem was practically running. By the time he was out of the gates of the school, Atem recognized a familiar car pulling up. He paused to watch Roland step out to open a back passenger door for him.
"I'm sorry." Atem didn't know why he was apologizing at all. Only that he felt like a mess. He probably looked like a mess. Roland didn't speak until after they were driving.
"Mr. Kaiba is worried about you in his own way."
"But I'm the reason behind all of this." Atem felt fresh tears forming.
"If I may speak freely, I believe you two can face this storm. After all, you're the first to pull Mr. Kaiba out of his shell."
"... May I ask why he was like that?" Atem felt another bout of hiccups.
"You would be better off asking one of the brothers. It is not my place to tell."
"Thank you. For believing in me." Although Atem was reeling, he started to feel a sense of calm taking root.
"You're welcome, Mr. Mayet."
By the time Atem arrived at the office, his hands were shaking and the hiccups were mild. Seto took one look at him and the fury softened. He didn't even have to speak as he opened an arm and Atem rushed to hug tightly. Despite having cried a lot earlier, Atem had no strength to hold them back.
"Once you've calmed down, I'm going to need the whole story. And, we need to put Yugi in his place at some point. He crossed the line today. I will not stand to be made the scapegoat and you should have a bigger spine when it comes to him."
"Just hold me. Please. I've lost Set. I'm afraid if I let you go, I'll lose you, too." Atem managed to say between hiccups.
"The fool didn't follow his father's example did he?"
"No. But a piece of him did die with his father. Just like how I felt." Atem began sobbing. Long arms embraced him tightly.
Atem cried his heart out. The loss of his father reopened. And while he had barely formed a connection with his uncle, there was still a wound left behind. Although the way Aknadin left this world may have played a part. The greatest pain was felt from grieving his former bond with Set.
It felt like he lost Set. Only, his cousin was still alive and breathing. However things will never be the same. And while Atem played off as if he was over the relationship, he secretly wasn't. The only issue was that Atem couldn't get over the whole cousin issue. So he forced himself to close his heart.
I guess I have to let go some point. I have Seto now. My dragon. Atem squeezed tighter.
Some point Atem must have cried himself to sleep. For the next he could recall, the sun was setting. Atem had to blink several times as he awoke to find himself once more in Seto's lap. While normally that would make him blush, Atem simply leaned to bury his face into a broad shoulder and warm neck.
"I got the whole story from Yugi. Well, from what he knew at least. Turns out, Mokuba was behind that photo. I've already given him a punishment for that stunt."
"That's hardly going to change anything, dragon. The reality still is that whatever love Set had for me is gone. He wouldn't let me help him with the funeral preparations. And his only stipulation about attending the funeral was if you weren't coming with me. But I'm scared. I'm scared of going home and force myself to endure all of that."
"Would he allow Yugi to go with you?"
"I - I can ask? I don't know. Yugi technically isn't related to my father."
"And what does that have to do with anything? He's related to you. Which makes him also Set's cousin. You should have a pretty big say about who you're taking with you to a funeral."
"It's a public service. And there's probably going to be cameras."
"Why would there be so much attention for a funeral?" Seto grew suspicious.
"We... Remember when I mentioned that I was studying to look into family history?"
"And it lead you to create Millennium Studios? Of course I remember." As Seto spoke, Atem finally looked up for their eyes to meet.
"I have found hints that we may have been descendants of a royal bloodline from Ancient Egypt. Not just nobles. Pharaohs. When that became known as to why Millennium Studios was created, word spread. It was how my company quickly gained power and money."
Seto stared for a long moment to process.
"So are you descendants of royalty?"
"The stone tablet that has Blue Eyes White Dragon has confirmed that, yes, yes I am through my father's side. Which was why I refuse to allow that one to be made public. It's one thing to confirm. It's a whole other problem to be known throughout the whole world that a living Pharaoh is here in the modern ages."
"... How long were you going to wait before telling me if this hadn't happened?"
"With you? I was going to wait until I fulfilled my promise to allow you to see the tablet. But before I could even arrange it, all of this shit show happened." It was the truth. Atem hadn't meant to keep this a secret for so long. But then Aknadin had to make things complicated.
"Did your uncle and cousin know?"
"I never told them. But Aknadin was probably getting suspicious when I stopped pursuing answers and began to focus more work on helping museums." Which would probably explain why Aknadin pushed so hard to join the company.
"So that could have been his motive. But then what would he have done with that information?" Seto pondered. It would seem he had the same idea.
"Who knows? It looks like it's up to me to tell Set at some point. Maybe once everything has calmed down." Whenever that will be. Atem wasn't hopeful that it was going to be anytime soon.
"Until then, you're free to stay with me."
Atem placed his head to lean over a broad chest. He smiled softly as he listened to the heartbeat racing. And yet Seto's breathing remained calm. Atem felt warmth spread through his own chest.

Chapter Text
"As President of Kaiba Corp, I have nothing but to offer my sympathies to the family over their loss. On the same token, Kaiba Corp has nothing to do with that death. Currently, we have just signed a contract for a project with Millennium Studios. But I assure you that has nothing to do with the internal dispute within the Mayet family. As for the project, I cannot speak on what it is or if it will continue. That all falls on the president of Millennium Studios." Seto promptly ended the video call interview.
The drama had taken Japan by storm a day late. But that was enough time for Seto to create a countermeasure for the public. He went over every detail with Atem to ensure that this was appropriate for both of their interests. This was one of the rare times Seto managed to pull Atem out of his shell. Since the news the previous day, Atem has been a husk of his former self.
"Has he eaten yet?" Seto asked Roland.
"I'm afraid not, sir." Was the grim answer.
He's not improving. Seto messaged Yugi.
I've tried to talk to him. But he won't answer my phone or messages. Yugi had been the one to pick up a new phone for Atem with Seto's help to pay for it.
Come here, then. As much as the CEO didn't want to see Yugi, this was best for Atem.
After your public announcement? You're under heavy watch. I'm going to get noticed even if you arrange a ride for me.
I don't care how or what methods are to be used. This is going to take all of us to pull him out. Seto angrily typed.
Actually, know what. You're right.
That was an odd change of tune. Seto almost asked what Yugi had in mind when suddenly his number was pulled into a group chat. Seto recognized his number, Yugi's, Atem's, and one number he did not.
I pulled you all in here to talk. This way if emotions run high, no one's going to get hurt. So, talk. Yugi typed first.
I have nothing to say. The unknown number messaged.
I take it this is Set? This had to be with that attitude.
Who is this? That was a quick reply.
Who do you think? Seto smirked.
Why is Kaiba part of this when he isn't family?
I thought you had nothing to say? But now that you know I'm here, you do have something to say? Seto challenged.
Stop meddling with my family!
I can and I will for as long as Atem doesn't speak for himself! Do you have any idea what you have done?
What are you insinuating?
I'm not insinuating anything! Yugi can confirm, Atem has barely spoken since you've placed the blame all on him! You wouldn't even hear any of us out on what happened during that meeting! And now he won't eat while I've got eyes on him so he won't raid my alcohol!
What? Was all Set could respond with.
Other me? Yugi timidly asked.
Atem remained silent.
If you love him as you claim, then you wouldn't abandon him to leave myself and Yugi to pick up the pieces! Actually, let's backtrack a little further. You wouldn't have put him in this state at all!
Kaiba! Yugi piped up.
Can it, Yugi! You pulled me in here, so I'm speaking my truth! Sometimes the truth hurts. And I'm not someone to mince my words. Seto was ready for an all out war.
For a moment there was silence. This gave Seto the chance to return to his office. Here, he was met with a still solemn Atem. The food was untouched. Silently, his Pharaoh handed over the phone. Seto immediately noticed Set trying to message privately.
You think you can just talk to him by yourself? Seto called out in the group text.
Stop meddling! Set snapped.
Get used to it! For as long as Atem is with me, I will meddle! And he's in no state to talk after everything you've said and done!
You technically play a part in pushing my father over the edge!
He did that to himself! He was the one who tried to get under my skin using you as the former ex boyfriend! That's what set Atem off in the first place!
That's a lie! Set defended.
Actually, I was there. It's true. Yugi typed.
Once again Seto thanked whatever gave Atem the idea to bring his cousin. Although the CEO had his personal opinion with Yugi, him having as a witness was useful. And his status in Atem's life held weight.
... Was that why he ranted about you two at the end? The question took a minute to be sent as Set processed.
He did it out of spite to make sure that our companies are under scrutiny and to create a rift between you and Atem. And I have to give it to him, he succeeded spectacularly.
Habibi? A timid message.
Atem tensed. Seto snarled before pulling his lover close. As Atem buried his face into his chest, the CEO once again began to type.
You have no right to call him that.
How did you know what that meant?
I don't know what you said. Nor do I want to. But his response is everything that I need to know. Seto felt a strong wave of possessiveness. He nuzzled into Atem's cheek. In his arms, Seto felt Atem relax. The CEO counted that as a personal win.
Atem is mine. Seto almost typed this out. However, things were already strained with Yugi. There was no need to add fuel to an already burning hot fire.
Can I call him? Set asked.
That depends on what it is you're going to say. Seto didn't trust him.
To apologize.
"Your cousin wants to call to supposedly apologize. I'm leaving up to that you." Seto relayed. He had to fight the urge to roll his eyes just because he was doing this at all.
"I'll call him when I'm ready." Was the weak reply. The tone made Seto's chest clench.
He says he'll call you when he's ready.
How do I know you're saying the truth? Set challenged.
You're just going to have to trust me. Just like I have to trust you not to do anything stupid with the potential blackmail you've got in your hands. Seto spat.
... I'll wait.
Seto hoped that if Set knew what was good for him, then he would be patient. Although if this cousin hadn't changed much, then he would be waiting like a loyal puppy.
You were a little unfair, Kaiba. Yugi messaged privately.
It's not about being fair. I have no problem calling out how I see it. And what I see is a fool who didn't want to hear Atem out before jumping to conclusions. And this is coming from the cousin who still has unresolved feelings for him? What a hypocrite. Seto would give Set a piece of his mind if it wouldn't make Atem turn on him.
Okay. Then you were a little too harsh.
Yugi. Unless you want an argument, I suggest you drop this. I'm only giving you this one warning out of obligation since you're the most important person to Atem. Seto just about had enough of this. He should be putting all of his attention on Atem instead of Yugi.
All right. I give in. Just keep me updated with him, okay?
I make no promises on when. Seto placed his phone out of sight.
"What will it take to convince you to eat something? I don't care if it's even one bite at this point. I want to see you eat." Now that Seto was free to change focus, he intended to give his all.
"Just hold me." Atem replied softly. His voice was almost a whisper.
"Pharaoh." Seto held a tone. The shiver from Atem didn't escape him.
"... Are you an option for the menu?"
Seto had to pull away partly in shock. He smirked however at the sight of poor Atem blushing. The CEO cupped his lover's chin so it was easier for his thumb to trace that pouty lower lip.
"Something like that is a reward. You haven't earned such a treat. And that treat requires that you actually eat something, not just one bite."
Finally, the fiery stubbornness flickered to life. Like a single ember catching flame. Seto would never tire of watching the way Atem's eyes burned with the challenge.
"I suppose if we choose something light, first." Atem accepted the stipulation given.
It took a few different plates of food to try before Atem could hold anything more than a two bites. Seto remained patient. He was used to the long nights when Mokuba was sick and he had to watch over him.
By the end of the trial and error Atem was too tired to be in the mood. Which was understandable considering all that has happened. Seto was content with the fact Atem actually ate something and kept it down. That was more of a win.
That evening Seto finished with his nightly routine before joining the bed. Atem was quick to hold close. Although Seto had been nervous sharing a bed at first, these last few nights have improved in his tolerance. In fact, the CEO would hate to admit it even to himself, but he wished Atem would stay every night.
I shouldn't be this attached. Seto immediately regretted having this thought. There was nothing wrong with having Atem with him like this. Maybe the CEO was a little afraid of how fast all of this was going.
"Thank you. For everything." Atem whispered. His voice wasn't so tired for once.
"I protect my own. You are increasingly becoming important to me by the day." Seto met Atem's gaze.
"So does that make me your treasure?" Atem playfully smiled.
"You're more than treasure. You're my Pharaoh." Seto smirked at the way that one simple word seemed to make Atem melt.

Chapter Text
Atem called a few days after the heated spat. Truthfully, he still wasn't ready. However, as his dragon pointed out already, Atem can't postpone this forever. Still Atem made the call while he was back at home with Yugi at his side. This was mutually agreed with all three that this was the best option when reaching out to Set.
Set answered on the first ring.
"Atem?" He sounded tired, defeated, and overall stressed.
"Hey." Atem really didn't know what to say. There was a long pause between them. Beside him, Yugi gripped Atem's other hand to show his full support.
"I'm sorry." Atem and Set both stumbled at the same time. Atem smiled sadly, hearing the desperation in his cousin's voice.
"I didn't mean for any of this to happen the way it did. I lost my temper when he tried to drag you into the argument, followed by the low blow of our accidental relationship." In the heat of that moment Atem was defending his relationship with Seto, as well as his cousin's name being brought up when he wasn't involved in the dispute.
"... Honestly, I should have expected as much. My father liked to use underhanded methods when he was losing." Set's voice softened. He understood Atem's thought process well enough.
There was another long moment of silence.
"I'm deeply sorry for my immediate reaction when you called." Set forced the words out.
"Care to elaborate why you were so harsh?" Atem worried his lower lip.
"Please tell me Kaiba isn't pushing you to ask."
"Firstly, I'm home. Second, whatever this is you've got a problem about Seto needs to be buried." Atem bristled.
"Apologies. I'm still a little sore about the group chat argument." Set quickly changed tune. He also likely knew and understood Yugi was present. He didn't bother to question it.
"This is not the time to place that on me. We shouldn't be squabbling in the first place. Soon as I heard, and mind you, I heard from Marik first, I had no idea up until the day I called you in a panic because I was worried for your mental state. I know you have your differences from him, but he was your father. And we've just lost mine." Atem's tone had been stern up until the last sentence when his voice cracked.
"I know. I was overwhelmed by the videos shoved in my face when he pulled that stunt. I was forced to take responsibility of my father's funeral preparations. It was all overwhelming to the point I couldn't take a moment to reach out to you."
"But you did." Atem corrected.
"The first night, yes. The following day, I left you be. That was until you called."
"Were you upset about how long it took me to hear word about what happened?" Atem gently pressed. On the other end he could tell his cousin seemed sheepish on being called out.
"A little. I was more upset about everything piling up and I unfairly took it out on you."
I get the feeling there's more to this. Atem had read over the group chat the previous night. Now that he had a clearer head and emotions not so high, he could read the hurt and fury in Set.
To be hurting to the point of anger wasn't a trait Set was known for. Usually his cousin was calm and remained cool headed even in stressful situations where his emotions were high. However, Atem believed this was too early to press on the matter.
"Can we work together on the funeral preparations? I know you wish for a double funeral. However, I would like to contribute to make small changes." Atem had a basic idea what his father's funeral was supposed to be like.
"That depends on what you're suggesting." Set was immediately suspicious.
Is this how we'll be from now on? That he's questioning every decision I make is being pulled by Seto in the background? Atem felt a fury take hold. He gripped Yugi's hand in order to displace it. This wasn't the time for an argument.
"I would only like to refuse the media presence. Outside and during the drive to their final resting place is fine, but not during the memorial. That should only be reserved for us and the close friends to them. With this in mind, I would like to bring Yugi with me."
"He's never met either of - "
"Set. I'm already coming home without one of the two comfort people in my life. The only two people who can keep me from doing anything stupid like raiding alcohol. You and I both know we can't ever return to how things used to be between us." Atem expressed the hurt and anger.
"You were really getting that bad?" Set was alarmed.
"This is late for me to tell you this at all, but the day I learned of my father's passing I left home to drink all night at bars. Seto randomly asked me a question in the middle of the night, learned why I was awake, and immediately took me to Kaiba Corp so I can sober up before coming home to a shit storm from Yugi and Grandpa. Yes, I was that bad." Admitting this out loud made Atem feel gutted. It was a rare occurrence for him to pull something stupid. That night was one of his worst.
But it brought me closer to Seto. There was one silver lining at least.
"You couldn't even reach out?" Set sounded hurt.
"I think I was so shocked that I even left Yugi. I never returned his calls or texts. I was stupid and didn't want to talk to anyone. Seto just so happened to message when I was drunk enough to not think about what I was doing when I responded." Atem never believed in coincidences. That night Seto had chosen the right time when Atem began to feel out of it, but aware enough to his surroundings. Another hour later Atem likely would've become black out drunk.
Looking back, his dragon really had become his savior. And it wasn't the only instance. Guilt began to creep through. Atem silently vowed to make up for those instances.
"... All right. You can bring Yugi with you."
"Good. There's something I also need to show you while over there." It was time Atem revealed what he had been keeping secret. He had only informed Seto of the run down details.
In fact, Atem hadn't told Yugi anything.
"May I ask what it is?"
"It would be better to show you after the funeral." It was better off this way. Atem had the notion that once shown the truth of the possibility why Aknadin went so far with his antics, it might anger Set.
After this phone call, things began to settle down. Seto continued to be the face to hold back the reporters. Atem hired on his old security team from Egypt to intervene any journalist from approaching himself and Yugi. Through his company website, Atem released an announcement that he was currently in mourning and would appreciate some privacy.
You had to hire your own security? Seto messaged later that evening.
If you're asking why I couldn't call you a favor, this isn't the first time I've used Ishtar Agency. Plus, it would incriminate both of us if I used yours. Atem smiled a little when it took his dragon a little bit longer to respond.
"I've never seen you smile at your phone." Marik leaned over. Atem felt an eyebrow twitch. He reminded himself that this was Marik. His friend absolutely did not understand personal space.
"Oh, that's Kaiba isn't it? Wait, why is he saved under the nickname Dragon?"
"Promise me that you'll keep a secret?" Might as well admit the relationship status to his guards. Soon as those words left Atem's mouth, Marik gasped.
"Wait, don't tell me! You're having sex with Seto Kaiba of Kaiba Corp!?"
"You didn't have to make it so vulgar." Atem pointedly deadpanned.
"Well it's no wonder you've got Kaiba in your corner! What are you looking at me like that for? I've seen you when you're changing clothes! You've got the good stuff, pharaoh!" Marik winked. His outburst cancelled all thoughts and Atem stammered on his words in response.
"This is not - excuse me, but this is more than just a fling."
"Oh so it's serious? More than - "
"Yes. More than that time I mistakenly got with my cousin." Atem interrupted.
At least I have never done anything with Set like I've done with my dragon. There was one silver lining that Seto was proud of. Atem had witnessed the ego boost after that was confirmed.
"Wait, this is the first time you've told Marik? But you two gossip about everything together." Yugi was shocked.
"Yeah, that was until he got sent here. Time difference is insane to catch up." Marik slumped further until he became dead weight on Atem's shoulder.
"Could you please." Atem pushed back. Dramatic as ever Marik completely became dead weight. With little regrets Atem let his friend slide down until he rolled onto the floor. Fortunately the living room floor was carpeted so the landing was soft.
"How cruel of you, pharaoh!" Marik was joking with the way he smiled.
Atem's phone vibrated. He peeked to see a message from Set. Curious about the very late text, he opened his phone to check. He was surprised to see that the funeral date was chosen in a few days time.
"The memorial service is set for Saturday. So we should get our plane tickets for Friday. I suggest we leave Monday to return here." Atem relayed his thoughts.
"Hold on, you're not staying at Egypt?" Marik quickly sat up.
"I... I don't think so." Guilt weighed heavy as Atem focused on sticking to this decision.
This wasn't just because of the relationship with Seto. Yugi had also become Atem's lifeline. And through him were growing friendships. Atem couldn't ignore this new chapter taking root. He was building connections and relationships. Back at Egypt, the most important roots were severed or forever changed. Atem would be lost while surrounded in a house that held nothing but memories.
Here, there was a future. While it was an uncertain future, Atem can still build it. And best of all he wouldn't be alone. Yugi and Seto had taken to become Atem's pillars for support. He wanted to believe with them at his side then the future would be a good one.
"Know what, I wish you luck! Just don't hesitate to hire us for whatever reason you can think of just so we can catch up!" Marik's response was a welcome surprise.
"Of course, Marik." Atem promised.
Notes:
Very, very sorry for taking so long to update. Lots of factors, including rethinking about the plot. But I've got an idea so I'm rolling with it because honestly I missed writing this story. I've also gone back and made edits to spelling and grammar errors, as well as explaining why I gave Atem the surname Mayet. In case you don't want to go back and read: it's derived from the goddess Ma'at, the goddess of spiritual justice, truth and morality. It fits Atem, and it's also a copy paste from my fanfic.net story Resolution under the same username.
Chapter Text
Seto impatiently twirled the pen as he sat through class. He would rather not be attending school this day since Atem and Yugi have departed on a plane to Egypt. However this day was a requirement as Seto hadn't shown up on any of the previous days due to work.
If only the media sharks would have backed off enough, I would have attended school this week on a different day. Seto was growing bitter by the minute.
It was bad enough to attend on a day without Atem and Yugi present, but Seto has to deal with the squad alone. Soon as he entered the classroom the mood shifted. This set the mood for what the rest of the day would be like. Fortunately so far his dark mood drove off anyone curious enough to ask for details.
The bell rang for lunch. Seto made quick work to leave for his usual spot. Without Atem to play chess with, there was no use to stay in the classroom. And of course he would never spend lunch at the cafeteria. However, it would seem someone wasn't intending to leave him be.
"Oi, Kaiba!" An annoying voice called out.
Seto pointedly ignored Joey and walked past. There was a snarl. Then footsteps hurriedly gave chase. Seto felt an eye twitch as Joey moved to stand between him and the door. They stood face to face glaring.
Why can't you ever take a hint? Seto wanted to snarl.
"Okay, I get the fact you and Atem got something going on! But how did you guys go from playing chess to business partners?" Joey demanded.
As if you can make such demands from me!? Seto gripped his bag tightly. His glare could freeze hell over. He watched Joey's poker face crack. The first sign of the blond losing his cool.
"Oh, come on! At some point you've gotta say something!" Joey's fist shook.
Please. You're not worth my time. Seto took a step to move past.
"Hey, where do you think you're going!" Joey stretched an arm out to grip the door frame.
"Joey!" Tristan and Teá reprimanded.
Joey was about to make a snark comment. However Seto reacted as any cornered animal would. He gripped Joey's wrist tightly with one hand. It was vice like and would surely leave a mark. But the strength was enough for Joey to get scared. Unfortunately that only riled him up further.
"What the hell, man?" Joey panicked. And whatever patience Seto had flown out the window.
"Get. Out. Of my way." The dark tone sent everyone's soul flying.
Joey let go of the door frame. That gave the indication for Seto to shove the blond back into the classroom. Behind him Joey landed ungracefully on the floor. Seto cared little about the incident as he walked out.
When Seto sat down, he found his hands were shaking. He tried his usual methods of calming down. Breathing exercises. Grounding methods. But the shaking would not stop. With a growing panic Seto reached for his phone.
He was shaking so much that he couldn't type. In the heat of the moment he forgot that Atem was currently on a plane. So the call didn't go through. Seto felt his chest clench and that was the moment he thought of a video call. He hoped Atem's phone was connected to the plane's internet. It rang impossibly long.
Then the screen flickered to Atem.
"Dragon?" Those violet eyes blinked. "Is everything okay?"
Seto couldn't bring himself to speak. His throat felt tight. The emotions from earlier with Joey rose tenfold. The frustration must have expressed in the earlier panic. Atem quickly connected his phone to Bluetooth headphones.
"It's okay. You don't have to speak." Atem assured and the relief flooded through Seto. His pharaoh's voice was calming the racing thoughts. Seto felt his shoulders slump. When had he been so tense they were tight?
Atem began to hum. Soft and gentle, like peaceful waves lapping the shore. Seto closed his eyes to focus. This eased his breathing. The constriction within his chest loosened. Slowly but surely the shaking in his hands stopped.
In fact Seto was close to falling asleep. Despite the distance Atem's humming gave the impression he was right there. Seto slumped in full relaxation. Thoughts were sluggish as he focused more on the present of this very moment. The gentle breeze combined with the comforting hum.
I miss you. Seto wanted to say.
There were a number of reasons why these words weren't said. One of the biggest was that his location wasn't exactly considered safe. In Seto's mind, this wasn't his office. Or anywhere his company owned. Therefore anyone could be watching him while he was unaware. It was amazing that Seto was this relaxed outside of KC.
Fortunately, Atem understood.
"My dragon? Are you asleep?" The words pulled Seto out of the half slumber. He blinked a few times while his mind jump started like an engine.
Seto glanced around. He breathed a sigh of relief that he was still alone in his usual spot. After confirming that no one was close by and spying, Seto glanced down at his phone. The sight of Atem in a plane seat was jarring. Just a moment before he had been imagining them together back at Seto's bedroom.
"When you get back I'm expecting you to visit." Seto could hardly believe himself.
I can't even last a day without him? The mixture of emotions were new for Seto. And the CEO's immediate response was to hate it. However the tenderness of his feelings towards Atem were stronger.
"Does this mean you get to spoil me?" Atem smiled, his eyes lighting up.
"If you count holding you close as spoiling." Seto was surprised by his own response. What was he saying? This was out of character of him. To come off this tender, this soft, there was only one other person to have ever heard him like this.
"I wouldn't have it any other way my dragon." Atem matched him.
We're doomed. Seto thought. Logically, he should be panicking. Instead he was calm. Perhaps this was leftover the effect of Atem's humming. Or, their bond was strong enough for them to accept this was serious.
He could read that Atem recognized this. There was a sense of relief and joy within those pretty eyes. What this meant, Seto dared not ask. This was all too new. It would seem that Atem was patient as a saint.
"Keep me updated throughout the day for me?" For the first time Atem was asking for updates.
"So long as you do the same, pharaoh." Still Seto made a silent promise in his head to follow through.
"Always for you, my dragon."
They reluctantly said their farewells and hung up. Seto forced himself to eat and finish. Fortunately he still had time to eat his lunch before being forced to return to the classroom. When the first warning bell rang, Seto forced his body to move.
He returned to the sight of Joey nursing a bump with an ice pack on top of his head. The blond glared but dared not say anything. Tristan smacking his friend saved Joey from making a comment. Seto ignored them as he took his seat.
The rest of the day was uneventful. Joey never attempted to approach again. He finally learned his lesson. And that earlier display was a warning for everyone else who were curious. Luckily no one was stupid enough to repeat Joey's mistake.
I made it through school without decking Wheeler. Seto messaged once he climbed into the limo.
I am glad to hear that. But now I'm worried something happened earlier? Atem hadn't asked hours before due to Seto's mind state at the time.
He tried to corner me. That was the gist of what the CEO wanted to share. Seto was certain Joey would try to tell the whole story and somehow spin it around.
Are you all right? Atem was quick to respond.
Thanks to you, I didn't have to commit murder. Seto was half serious.
I will count this as a win. Was Atem's response a moment later. He likely had to read the message a couple of times.
I mean what I say. Seto was referring to sharing his gratitude.
I know. I am glad to help any way I can. His pharaoh was back to responding at his usual time frame.
In that moment Seto felt a strong urge to type something. This was a rare occurrence for the CEO to even say this to Mokuba. However, his brother learned to read him without needing to hear it. Seto shared his love for his brother by actions.
It never occurred to Seto to find himself in this situation. He had assumed to never meet someone who would earn this deep of a relationship. And yet Atem literally walked into his life and turned his world upside down in every means possible.
Are you all right, dragon? It seemed as if Atem sensed something.
For a panicked moment Seto stared at his phone. It was something so simple to type. Yet he couldn't. The frustration fueled by embarrassment made his panic worse. Seto decided to be honest even if he came off too brutal.
I can't seem to type something simple to express how much I care for you.
There was a few agonizing few minutes of silence. Seto was close to another panic attack when there was another video call. Confused but curious, the CEO accepted it. Blue eyes blinked in surprise to see Atem was in the wash room.
"Are you trying to say that you love me?" Atem sounded hopeful, yet timid.
"Yes." Somehow Seto could say this much. He felt his heart race when Atem smiled fondly.
"If you can't say it yet, you won't have to. Knowing that's how you feel is enough, my dragon."
Why did this have to happen when you're on a plane half a world away? Seto furrowed his brows.
"I can see if we can change to come back Sunday. I have to make preparations to move the stone tablet I've told you about. But if it needs to be slower, I'll still take an earlier flight." It would seem Atem read him like an open book.
"Keep me updated on your flights." Seto was now thinking of surprising Atem by being there in person when he landed. To meet his lover at the airport was something Seto can do without trouble. Somehow he can face the questioning glances and wild theories over saying a simple saying.
"Of course, my dragon. May I say it freely if you're comfortable?" His pharaoh timidly asked.
"How many times do I have to tell you that you can be selfish with me, pharaoh?" Seto reminded. He watched Atem smile.
"I love you."
The storm over Seto's heart lifted.

Chapter Text
The service was followed heavily by the public. News spread of the possibility of Atem's family being linked to a lost line of ancient pharaohs. Seto had taken the time to listen in and occasionally glanced at the computer screen that was free to display the ongoing news.
The memorial was private as Atem requested. However the drive from the memorial to the final resting place was covered by national and international news. Seto personally didn't understand why this was covered at all.
Although Seto never met Atem's father, he respected the man for going so far to protect him and the company even after his death. It was a bitter reminder that Gozaboro cared so little in comparison. However Seto recognized that not everyone should understand that kind of pain. In fact, Seto wished no one should.
What boggled Seto was the fact just because of a rumor of Atem and Set being descendants of ancient royalty would draw so much attention in the passing of a family member. And the media circled like vultures, hungry for any sort of confirmation that the rumors are true.
I can see why Atem kept this secret even from his own family. Seto recalled Aknadin's behavior. Perhaps he was desperate for answers. And he was willing to do anything in his power to have those answers.
A quiet question came to mind. Why?
Seto tried his best not to let the question haunt him. One, this shouldn't be his business. This wasn't his family. The CEO was merely in a relationship with Atem. Therefore the boundaries were clear.
Late into the evening Seto couldn't sleep. And as he couldn't sleep, nothing from Kaiba Corp required his full attention, Seto gave in. Silently the CEO berated himself from not digging into Aknadin's background before confronting the man.
Apparently, Aknadin had created his own company. This was also in the research of ancient Egypt's civilization. However, this smaller company was more into the forensics field. This one was trying to connect unnamed mummies to regain their names. While the scientific technology was new, it was gaining traction of interest.
Light Pyramid Forensics and Research aimed to build more into scientific engineering to further study the mummies and narrow down identifications. From judging how old the body was, then attempting to use DNA analysis to place an identity. This was to compare the samples to the known identified pharaohs in the hopes to build a geological tree.
However the technology wasn't quite taking off. Seto looked into the known public records. There seemed to be lots of skepticism towards the methods. On top of that, there seemed to be an outcry of criticism for the treatment towards the bodies. Rumors spread of poor treatment and nothing could be done to dim the flames of scrutiny.
Aknadin was forced to close down his company. Seto checked through the known facts. There was no hard evidence that the rumors were true. So if there weren't evidence, the chances of the rumors being true were very slim. If Aknadin's practices were true to treat the bodies with respect and care, anyone in his shoes would be bitter. That could explain his drive to search for the answers of his family history.
The company filed for bankruptcy and closed down officially three years ago. Since then Aknadin quietly stayed out of public. That was until his very public suicide. The timing of this was even before Atem and Set crossed paths. However it was fresh enough for Aknadin to take interest in Millennium Studios.
Did he seriously push so hard to join the company by force for answers, fueled by his own failures? It would explain the extreme actions Aknadin took. The man even died for it.
Are you aware your uncle had his own company? Seto inquired. Be in the middle of the night on his end be damned.
I know that he couldn't keep it going and was forced to let it go to dust. Atem replied a few minutes later.
He lost it just before you met your cousin. What if he was so desperate for answers that he held onto the hope of learning confirmation through yours? Seto was briefly aware that his lover didn't question the hour of these messages.
Currently it was early morning for Atem. He was likely preparing to exchange his flight for that day to return to Japan. Seto had yet to sleep. He waited several minutes before his phone vibrated for a call. Seto answered, but last minute there was a request to switch for video. Seto accepted the request and his screen lit up to show a very tired and emotionally exhausted Atem. Immediately he can see how puffy those eyes were as if he had cried a lot recently.
"Who made you cry?" Seto had suspicion it was a certain cousin.
"My dragon, please." Atem sighed.
Seto paused, the want to demand confirmation was strong. However, he had never seen Atem so ready to collapse. He seemed to have hardly slept himself. Reluctantly Seto didn't voice his thoughts.
"I want to thank you for bringing this to light. I wish it had been sooner, though. Now that I know of this theory, it explains why Set was so upset after seeing the tablet."
"The same stone tablet that confirmed your heritage?" Seto stared.
"It is also the same one that shows Blue Eyes White Dragon. I honestly wanted to show this to you in person, but perhaps this shouldn't wait." Atem switched to the back camera. Seto realized that his lover wasn't at the airport.
It looked like some sort of closed off room, plain and nothing to indicate a home. However Seto had the belief this was either a basement or a warehouse. He couldn't discern which was true when the phone showed a glass case holding a tall stone carving. It looked to be cut from a section of a wall.
Immediately Seto recognized Blue Eyes White Dragon. The ancient carving might be primitive in nature, but the wings and details of the head were unmistakable. However, Seto noticed a figure beneath the dragon and his heart went still.
That's me! The similarities were striking.
"Who is that underneath Blue Eyes?" Seto asked once he found his voice.
"He was a priest. This carving named him Priest Set. He was a high priest of the court. And, apparently, he was a lost cousin to the pharaoh himself, who is on the opposite side of him." After Atem explained, Seto's eyes drifted to the other figures.
The spikey hair was easy to identify Atem. Together the figures stood with an arm held out. Above the figure was none other than Dark Magician. Seto stared silently as he processed the shock.
"Please tell me this is a joke."
"I wish it were." Atem nervously laughed. His tone was dark. Immediately Seto was alarmed by his lover's mental state.
"Atem?" He asked.
"Sorry. I wish I hadn't been curious enough to seek the answer that I'm descended from pharaohs. Technically, I'm descended from the priest. The pharaoh depicted here, his name was erased from every record. Even here, his name was purposefully removed." The camera moved to show the scraping of hieroglyphs. These were the only set to be removed, the rest remained untouched, suggesting this was done intentionally.
"What happened?" Seto asked.
"Not even Pegasus could confirm with a hundred percent accuracy. We have concluded the best we can that, perhaps, this boy king was forced into a war. A war so devastating that the ancient people could not bring themselves to describe it. This tablet explains a brief fight between these two when the priest discovered his heritage. The outcome of their fight is unclear. However records a year after this named the priest as pharaoh."
Seto absorbed the information. He understood that this one solid proof that confirmed the family theory of Atem's family came from ancient royalty, this one stone carving left more questions than answers. On top of that the striking similarities were uncanny. It was almost impossible to believe. Even with the physical evidence in front of him, Seto didn't want to believe.
His love for Atem forced Seto to swallow the truth.
"... Let me guess, your cousin got upset because if you had shared the information, your uncle would still be alive today?"
Silently the camera was switched to Atem. Fresh tears were forming. When their eyes locked Atem couldn't hold himself together. The tears streamed down and Seto's chest constricted at the sight. He desperately wanted to reach through the screen and hold Atem. Even more so as Atem cried and slowly collapsed to his knees. His other arm moved to hold himself in a one arm hug.
"Look, insane coincidences aside, you had every right to withhold this information. In fact, I would have done the same thing." Now that he knew all of the facts, Seto knew how he would have handled this.
"But the losses - "
"Means that you and both of your cousins wouldn't be dragged through history as royalty. Do you know how much of a risk that places your lives? Even Yugi, who technically isn't descended from these pharaohs, he closely resembles you. If there was no plan for you to protect yourselves from becoming targets to place in power as puppets, then you would all be seen as threats. It wouldn't matter if you said over and over you refuse to take part of anything government related, you would still be revered. And with that public opinion there would be jealousy."
Seto didn't have to go into what that jealousy would do in the wrong hands. They were both aware of the dangers. Seto lived in a different scale of this, being CEO to a growing powerful company. He was forced to adapt and stand on his own feet in this shark eating shark corporate world. This unfortunately created him to act untouchable even in a school setting.
"Please tell me your cousin won't talk about this." Seto hoped that Set was smart enough to understand the dangers.
"He already swore that he wouldn't. Yugi, too." Atem sniffed as he tried his best to calm himself down.
"I understand that you shouldn't listen to my suggestions. But if I were in your shoes, that tablet would be destroyed. Including all traces of its existence. Any copies, everyone who knows of this tablet existing should be given a hush hush contract." Clauses to take legal action would make anyone hesitate.
"There are no copies. I've been meticulous about that. I would have to write something for Pegasus, though."
"Allow me to help you with that. I've had enough dealings with him to put a stop into thinking of following up with any ideas." To say Seto was an expert was something he wanted to put to use.
"Okay." Atem agreed.
"Atem!" Yugi's voice called out. Seto watched as Yugi and two of the guards rushed to Atem.
"What happened?" Seto didn't like their expressions.
"Set was cornered to reveal that you're not descendants of ancient pharaohs."
"There are demands and an outcry why this wasn't released sooner. Rashid had to rescue Set from the reporters that cornered him outside of his work. There are now a number of people demanding answers heading here to the mansion." The sister Ishizu informed.
"We have to leave now!" Marik insisted. He sat down to Atem's level. Seto noticed that Marik was almost the same frame as Atem, if a few inches taller.
"I can't leave this mansion unprotected." Atem went stiff.
"I can make arrangements to bring more security here. But it will take them fifteen minutes. We don't have that time to wait." Ishizu pressed with urgency.
"I can't leave them to discover this tablet!" Atem remained firm.
"What if we give them a red herring?" A plan was forming in Seto's head. They all turned to him with confused gazes.
"Like what?" Yugi asked.
"First, is there a means to disguise one of you to make them give chase?" As Seto made his inquiry, his eyes focused on Marik.
"... Why are you looking at me?"
Notes:
If those of you have seen the first Yu-Gi-Oh movie, yeah, Light Pyramid Forensics and Research is literally a play of the Pyramid of Light. I felt like throwing back an old reference because why not and I couldn't immediately think of a good name for a company and didn't feel like going down a rabbit hole lol

"Are you sure this is going to work?" Marik was skeptical.
"Please? I'll make it up to you by extending our contract so you can stay over in Domino City a little longer." Atem offered. He watched Marik sigh before giving in.
"Fiiiiine."
"Thank you!" Atem felt the urge to hug but held back.
"Yeah, yeah. You owe me big time for this!" Marik was only half serious as he left to find something to disguise himself with.
"Okay what's next in your grand plan?" Yugi turned to Seto. Atem followed his cousin's example and for a brief moment the world didn't feel so dangerous when their eyes met.
"Get to the airport. How big is your security agency?"
"We're the most popular here in Egypt." Ishizu answered. In other words, pretty big.
"You'll probably need more numbers at the airport. Have you changed your flight yet?"
"No, we're going to do that once there." Atem wanted to do it in person.
"Keep me updated on your flights. I'll arrange my own security for your arrival."
"But wouldn't that look suspicious to the press about you two?" Yugi pointed out.
"At this point I don't give a damn. All that matters is ensuring Atem's safety, and you by extension." Seto was in business mode, Atem could tell with how closed off his tone was. Still he felt warm and fuzzy from the protectiveness.
"Right. I'll let you know once we've changed flights." Atem promised.
For a split second, those pretty blues changed. In a blink of an eye they became softer. Expressing what Seto couldn't say aloud. Atem smiled warmly.
"Love you, too." He watched the tension leave Seto, and that was enough for Atem to feel comfortable ending the call.
"What was that?" Yugi asked.
"What was what?" Atem played innocent as he got up. Beside him, his cousin followed suit.
"Did you just say that you loved him?"
"Now isn't the time to explain." Atem reminded, and for now Yugi dropped it.
Together they followed Ishizu. They watched Marik, now dressed with a dark cloak and hood to disguise the upper half of his body. Atem noticed Marik claimed one of his pants.
"Really? My clothes?"
"Hey, don't you start! I'm the one who has to play pretend just to get them off your back. I gotta make it convincing, right?" Marik gave the impression of a riled up cat.
"I suppose." While Atem pouted, he tried his best not to feel a certain way.
"Don't worry I'll wash them before giving them back!" Marik promised before leaving.
The group watched while hiding out of sight. By now there was a large group of people at the gate. Atem silently thanked whatever holy power above that his father thought of placing a high gate around the property to protect the mansion. The majority of the media dogs were congregated by the main gate.
Marik was sneaking out through the small side gate. Atem made a mental note to request the agency to lock and patrol that one once the property was secured. They watched Marik attempting to go through an alleyway. It was clear he purposely wasn't being too careful.
Someone pointed him out. Marik booked it for a random direction. He rounded a corner. Then as the group of spectators caught up to the alleyway entrance, they all made way for a motorcycle. Everyone climbed onto their own vehicles be it cars, bikes, or motorcycles. They all gave chase.
At Atem's expense, they waited until the large group of security Ishizu brought on guarding the mansion and property. Atem gave clear instructions about weak points of the gate. After clearing that up, they were ready to make for the airport.
"We should make for the car." Ishizu instructed.
"We'll take the family one." It wouldn't stand out compared to the all black and tinted windows of the Ishtar Security used.
"Are you sure?" It was part of the inheritance. Ishizu was worried it might still be recognized.
"The windows are tinted enough for us not to immediately be recognized."
"I'll drive." Ishizu gave in.
Atem led them to the large garage. Inside there were four vehicles, including one motorcycle. Yugi took in the details with growing shock. He hadn't known about the cars or bike.
"You really were living it up out here." Yugi comments.
"That may be so, but the Game Shop is still cozy." In other words Atem cared little for status. So long as he was surrounded by good people then he wasn't picky about how big the house was.
The drive was uneventful. Since it was close to a year since the family car had been used, it wasn't attracting attention. Atem breathed a sigh of relief once they made to the airport. However they weren't out of the woods yet. They still had to change flights before placing distance.
Fortunately Atem didn't have trouble getting a plane set to depart within an hour. He messaged Seto the departing time. Then gave the destination time and what gate. Seto warned that the media was already trying to get frantic about the news, but the CEO was making plans.
As Atem waited while the agonizing minutes ticked by, Rashid and Marik joined them. Atem had the forethought of getting them tickets when he changed flights. He was relieved they were able to make it.
"How is Set?" Atem asked.
"Last I saw, he was in disbelief that the world was hoping for the rumor to be true. Oh, and he gave me a note for you." Rashid handed a folded piece of paper.
Curious, Atem opened to read. While he dreaded to read it, since Set usually wanted to talk through text or a call. He hadn't sent notes or letters since the brief period they were dating. Seeing his handwriting made Atem's stomach drop. He barely noticed Yugi leaning over to read it over with him.
I can't seem to bring myself to text so I'm writing this down. Hopefully I have the courage to hand it over before your friend leaves to return to you.
"Please tell me it's not a confession." Yugi's comment earned a gentle elbow.
After watching the media frenzy over telling the lie of our heritage, I can understand why you did what you did. I deeply regret placing the blame on you. That was unfair. That's solely on my own father. I hadn't known how deeply his obsession was about the truth wanting to be real.
I know you won't hold my words against me. That's not like you. So I'll carry the burden for the rest of my days. Don't bother trying to convince me otherwise. I shouldn't have said what I said. I just wanted to let you know not to blame yourself as I know you're prone to.
Whenever you're ready for a call don't hesitate. Please give my regards to Kaiba. I wish you two the best.
Atem felt the urge to call then and there. But he hesitated. One, after checking the time, there wouldn't be a lot left before they were to line up for the plane. Two, Atem really didn't know what to say. His emotions were all over the place. If Atem were to start crying then it would attract attention.
"You're not calling him?" Yugi blinked in surprise.
"Not until I'm ready." Atem shook his head.
"Good. I think you two need some distance for a while." Yugi smiled.
Atem smiled in return but in truth his heart wasn't into it. He could see that his cousin noticed. However Yugi had the sense not to ask questions. It helped that the call to line up for the plane was said over the speaker. The group gathered their bags.
See you at home. Atem sent the message as soon as he sat down in his seat.
Can't wait. Was the immediate reply. Atem felt his heart flutter.
The long flight was a blur. Some point Atem had fallen asleep. He awoke when Yugi gently shook him when they were minutes away from landing. Despite being awake as they landed Atem's brain was still sluggish. Getting their carry on bags and filing out of the plane wasn't enough to get the gears in his head working.
Soon as they walked out into the terminal Atem caught sight of Seto. He turned and stopped dead in his tracks. He wasn't wearing the white jacket he was more fond of but the deep purple. This was Seto's preference for the casual days at the office.
Their eyes met and Atem broke into a run. He almost jumped straight into waiting arms. Atem could smell the cologne and he couldn't help but bury his face. When long arms embraced him Atem felt safe. His whole body felt the relief like an exhale.
"I take it you're going to stay with him?" Yugi asked, his voice teasing.
"I think that's a given." Seto may have come off as annoyed, but his tone wasn't as sharp as it usually would.
"I'll still give you a ride home. But don't expect me to do this often in the future." Seto warned, reminding that he wasn't a taxi service. Plus taking the time of bringing Yugi home meant less time alone with Atem. And running a company meant Seto took advantage of every spare time off he could get.
"I wouldn't expect you to." Yugi assured. "But thank you all the same."
Atem felt Seto tense. He wasn't used to people showing genuine gratitude. Atem smiled to himself as his dragon relaxed.
"So nice to finally meet you! My name is Marik Ishtar. The one and only that you suggested to be the scapegoat. I had fun with it by the way." Marik happily introduced himself.
"At least it worked out." Seto raised a brow at the sight of familiar pants.
"We should get going." Atem redirected. He could tell that his dragon noticed the detail of the borrowed pants. Atem was happy to see his dragon let go of the idea to confront Marik over the wardrobe. Although Atem began to suspect Marik did it on purpose just to mess with Seto.
The limo had room for all of them. Roland helped with their bags. Once inside Atem leaned onto Seto. Either the exhaustion from the constant traveling or the emotional rollercoaster of the last few days, Atem drifted off to sleep with Seto's heartbeat in his ear.
"I've never seen him do that before." Marik blinked in surprise.
"Just like how I've never heard him say love you to anyone else." Yugi teased.
"Don't make me turn this car around." Seto huffed. But his usual bite wasn't present. Yugi could tell this much and laughed.
"Joke's aside, I'm glad to see you two going stronger than when we left." Yugi comments.
"Hmph." Seto counted this as a win. Yugi supported them and that was all that mattered. Everyone else's opinions can shove it.
Luckily dropping Yugi and the Ishtar siblings off at the Game Shop wasn't noticed. Most of the journalists were at the airport. Seto had set up a false tip to look at a different terminal at a different hour. Even with the extreme journalists chose to be at the airport since the crack of dawn, no one noticed the KC limo pulling up and leaving with a group of people.
Which meant no one noticed when Yugi was dropped off without Atem. And most certainly no one witnessed Seto carrying Atem bridal style at his company's building. Seto knew for a fact no one in his company would ever talk. Not even a blushing secretary who watched Seto carry Atem to the elevator.
Notes:
I almost included Marik's thought process as he changed clothes but I knew this chapter was going to be long to begin with lol
Last minute edit: yes chapter 18 is going to be the last chapter to wrap up this story. And I may or may not have an idea for a new Yu-Gi-Oh story....
No the idea is unrelated to this one and I'm still debating whether to jump into that idea to turn into a full story

Chapter Text
Six Months Later
"We are proud to announce the project that has been in the works for some time now is finally complete. This is a direct collaboration between Millennium Studios and Kaiba Corp. Combining the best of our companies together to bring museums to life through state of the art technology. We have selected three museums to jump start this project with the aim that more will be added in the future. The openings will be this weekend. And by our insistence, the museums will be free for all to visit on the grand opening and see our combined work and effort to bring these museums to life. On behalf of Millennium Studios and Kaiba Corp, we hope to see you there."
The timing had been perfect to match the global winter breaks in schools. The three selected museums were the ones that supported the idea the loudest. One in Domino City, one in Egypt, then one that Pegasus himself partially owns in America.
At school these last few months, Seto and Atem played off as nothing more than close friends. However speculation of something more came to light just before the announcement. Atem was spotted while holiday shopping with a white gold ring on his finger. There was even a photo zoomed in on the band with one large and smooth oval sapphire in the center. Excitement and envy flooded the internet as people eagerly waited for a chance to catch Seto Kaiba in public to confirm if he also had a ring.
Within hours of the speculation Seto made that announcement. Many watched with the hopes to catch a glimpse of his hands. But the CEO had been cautious to never show either hand before ending the video conference. Of course this only fueled the announcement of this project that both companies had been so hush hush over.
On the day of the grand opening, Yugi and Grandpa excitedly went to see for themselves. Together they met up with Yugi's friends. However, Atem was noticeably absent.
"Where's your cousin, Yug?" Joey asked.
"Oh, he's caught up with something important. I'm afraid he can't make the opening today." Yugi knew what the real reason was. However he made a promise. There was supposedly a special surprise that Atem and Seto had in mind.
"Huh. I was hoping to see this ring for myself. Tristan and I have a bet going on whether it's real or not."
"And you didn't bother to ask Yugi at all to confirm?" Teá pointed out, earning both teens to immediately feel silly.
"Wait, Yugi!" Both Tristan and Joey jumped closer to the shorter teen.
"IS IT TRUE!?"
"Sorry, guys, but that's not for me to say." Yugi had asked beforehand and this was what Atem told him. Yugi knew that his cousin didn't care, so that limitation must have come from Kaiba.
"Oh, come on! Shouldn't we get a pass or something?" Tristan grumbled.
"Forget it, they're all about their privacy. Remember we weren't in on the relationship until this past summer?" Joey gave up.
"Yeah, but that was a complete accident." Tristan reminded.
"Let's go see what they've been working on." Grandpa redirected them.
They continued inside the museum. There were large signs pointing towards the Egyptian exhibit. So the group entered, following a group of younger kids. Everyone gasped at the sight of ancient stone tablets coming to life from holograms. The carvings that inspired Duel Monsters roared and flew. Some even crawled, making children scream and laugh with excitement.
"Look at all this!" Teá was taking in the entire scene before her. There wasn't a single stone tablet that didn't have a hologram. They would activate as soon as someone walked by.
"This is so cool! What a way to combine the past to the future!" Joey beamed.
"Gotta say, they really put in the best of both companies." Tristan comments.
"Yeah, it's amazing team work." Yugi was proud of Atem and Kaiba.
"Hey, guys!" Mokuba called out. He approached with almost uncontained excitement.
"Hey, Mokuba. What's up?" Yugi greeted.
"You guys are just in time to see the most special unveiling! Come on!" The younger Kaiba excitedly led the way.
In the center of a smaller room there was a covered glass container. Yugi was surprised to see Atem and Kaiba both. Wordlessly everyone watched the royal purple cloth being pulled on either side by the couple. Yugi wasn't the only one to stare in wonder.
The same tablet he had been shown six months earlier. Only, it was changed. Originally, the stone carving included the whole story behind the images. This tablet once stood over seven feet. Now it was barely four feet tall. The story was cut out to only show the two figures with their respective monsters.
"Behold the earliest ancient carving to date of Blue Eyes White Dragon!" Kaiba announced.
"In a fight against the Dark Magician." Atem added.
As people moved forward the holograms activated. The unmistakable roar of Blue Eyes can be heard. The dragon pulled back with a beat of its wings. Opposite of the dragon, Dark Magician took a stance. Together the two set off their attacks. However the two would move freely around the room, attacking or dodging. Neither one truly gaining the upper hand.
"This can't be real! Those carvings look like you two!" Someone shouted.
"By all accounts, it shouldn't be real. I was in disbelief when I discovered it. However, I had this verified by Pegasus himself. This carving is as real as we are." Atem pointed at the plaque on display underneath the tablet. People looked closer to see a quote from Pegasus, confirming the authenticity.
"Hey, this doesn't have a story like the others. Why is that?" Joey noticed. A number of other people began to squint and realized that there wasn't anything telling the story behind this carving.
"Unfortunately this was found in such bad condition that the texts were unreadable. We don't even know their names, or the outcome of the duel." Atem answered.
"Hence why we put in the extra effort to not show the winner between these two." Seto informed. Behind the scenes, this hologram was what had taken the most of their time and effort.
Yugi shared a knowing smile. He hadn't even known about this decision. But he was glad to have learned the same as everyone else. He knew Atem had been conflicted about whether or not to destroy this tablet in particular. He understood why his cousin didn't like it personally, but this held a deep meaning and a connection that shouldn't entirely be erased from history.
"Kaiba! You have a ring!" Someone shrieked.
"We were supposed to announce our engagement this day, but you people ruined that. Be lucky I'm bothering to confirm this at all." Seto dismissed. He turned to leave, Atem following suit. Kaiba's guards prevented reporters and regular people from approaching closer.
Later on photos from the unveiling of the special carving were released to the public. A few zoomed in on the piece with a smooth oval ruby in the center of the gold ring on Seto's finger. That evening Seto even released a statement.
"We have kept our relationship a secret due to privacy reasons. Now that the secret is out, we will continue to keep to ourselves. We will not answer any questions about this. This is a decision that we both agree on. And before anyone asks, no, the wedding won't be a public event. By the request of Atem this will be an entirely private matter. Please respect our boundaries and leave us alone. That includes any extended family. Do not harass them for further details."
"Nice touch at the end. Hopefully they'll listen and leave our families alone." Atem kissed his dragon's cheek.
"It was bad enough when they stalked both of your cousins over the summer." Seto huffed. They had been informed when Set hired on the Ishtars for protection. Even though it was public knowledge that Set and Atem weren't descendants of a royal bloodline, that didn't erase them from the spotlight as celebrities.
"Yugi has told me that people are already making bets which of us is changing our surnames." Atem chuckled.
"As if I ever would. If you would like, we can just keep our original surnames instead of the silly tradition of taking on the others." Seto had been adamant from the start that he won't make any changes to his.
"Hmm. No, I think I like the sound of Atem Kaiba. It has a nice ring to it." Atem winked, laughing nervously as he watched the hunger in those pretty eyes take root.
"Do you have any idea how much that turns me on?" Seto growled out. "It just shows the world that you're mine."
"All the more reason to take yours, my dragon." Atem smirked playfully. He even wrapped his arms around broad shoulders. His hands glided over muscles in a slow, sensual manner. The barest of shivers from Seto earned a chuckle from Atem.
The kiss was fierce and Atem found his bottom lip being bit. He moaned into it despite the discomfort. As of late Seto has become increasingly possessive. Atem allowed it so long as his dragon didn't cross any lines. So far Seto hardly ever needs any corrections on his behavior.
The kiss broke the moment the chair was turned around to the glass windows. Atem was lightheaded as he was pressed forward with the front half and the rest of him was in Seto's lap. Long fingers teased as they worked at his vast amount of belts.
"My dragon..." Atem wanted to help, but a harsh nip at the base of his neck told him enough. He focused on his breathing intake as he pressed against the glass.
Briefly Atem opened his eyes to take in the view of Domino City. At night this view really came to life with all of the lights. Atem only wished that he could have had a view of the stars, too. They would have ample opportunity on the honeymoon. A traditional home for rent in the shadow of Mt. Fuji, and no one around for miles. There were also talks to have a second trip out in Egypt so they can experience both traditions.
"My pharaoh, are you ready?" Seto's inquiry had Atem blink as he pulled out of the thoughts of their future together.
"Yes, my dragon." Atem smiled warmly.
Seto's hand reached for Atem's. Their fingers eagerly interlocked with each other. Their rings that symbolized their promise and love brushed together. Atem wouldn't trade this moment for the world. He knew Seto wouldn't, either.
Notes:
And there it is, the end. I know that we don't get to see the conversation between Atem and Set but I feel like that shouldn't take priority over the relationship between Atem and Seto. And the note Set sent to Atem last chapter was enough of closure, at least to me.
As easy as it would be to destroy the stone tablet completely, why not make use of Kaiba showing off Blue Eyes? So I went with that as the nice little show to share the news of their engagement. And yes, the rings are each other's personalities.
Thank you for keeping up with me this far. Hope you enjoyed. I will now focus on some other works and *might* come back to Yu-Gi-Oh fan base with another story idea. Still working on whether I want to put it out there, tho
