Oh, your love is sunlight

Summary:

He stares at you, and your ears redden as you register the sound of your stomach growling, demanding attention.

“Sure sounds like you’re hungry!” he laughs, “C’mon, what’s the big deal? Sanji always cooks good food!”

“No, that’s not—” you start, before shaking your head. “You’re so stubborn—why can’t you just take no for an answer, huh?”

“Cause,” he says, “You aren’t making any sense. If you’re hungry, just eat.”

Or: I really love Luffy’s relationship with food in the anime and I kept thinking about how good he’d be with dismantling the bullshit an ED throws at you—so, here we are 🙂‍↕️.

Notes:

Hiii 💖💖 I wrote this in one evening so if it sucks please don’t tell me 🙂‍↕️

Also everything related to the eating disorder is based off of my own personal experiences—I did kinda make the reader here a bit more willing to be open abt their feelings compared to how I am irl, but it was a necessity because otherwise the fic would just be me staring at him not saying a word and eventually crying LOL

Anyways please use caution going forward—I don’t mention numbers whatsoever but there is still detailed depictions of restriction in here, cause reader has a restrictive eating disorder.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Hey!”

You shoot your head up as Luffy pushed your door open—he never was one for knocking, really, despite multiple attempts to teach him.

Ordinarily, you wouldn’t mind the company—but at the present moment, it was about the last thing you wanted.

“Luffy,” you greet him, feeling hollowed out. “What is it?”

“Well, Sanji made these special new snacks, but he said all the girls had to try it first before he’d let me have any, and then I said I’d come find you and get you to try it, so—”

You feel your eyes well up with tears, and rush to rub them dry. No—this was fine. Nevermind the fact that your stomach was trying to eat itself from the inside out because you haven’t eaten since yesterday, and that it had taken so much endurance and perseverance to get this far.

If you let any of that shit become obvious to him, then you were never going to hear the end of it—and you could certainly say goodbye to this little secret of yours.

You’d been able to endure lying to him for months now—surely, you could survive it just a little while longer.

“Tell him I’m seasick,” you reply, flopping down on your bed for extra effect.

“What kinda pirate gets seasick?” Luffy asks. “You’re so weird!” he then says, laughing like he just told the funniest joke in the whole damn grand line.

“Says the guy who’s made of rubber and can’t swim,” you fire back. “Just go—I’m not hungry.”

Your world suddenly screeches to a halt at those words. Time and time again, you’d found yourself completely and utterly dismantled from his simple philosophies—his easy, accepting love. You should’ve known his attitude towards this would’ve been the same.

“I—” you start, before faltering and looking away from him. Embarrassingly enough, you can feel your eyes welling up with tears, and you rush to rub them away once more—only to feel more and more fall.

“Oi—Oi, hey, what’s the matter with you?” he demands, running over. “Why are you crying?” he asks, standing next to you now, his gaze focused on your form.

“I don’t know—” you try to say, the sudden rush of tears making it difficult to speak. “God, I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Luffy—I don’t know how to—” you try again, trying so damn hard to just make the words come out.

He kneels down to meet your eyes, donning the more serious and thoughtful expression he reserves for his role as a captain.

You swallow tremulously, feeling like such an idiot for breaking down in front of him like this. You just—you can’t fucking take keeping it inside anymore.

“I don’t—I don’t think I’m.. normal, about food,” you admit, ignoring the screaming inside of you that’s trying to shut you up. “I don’t…know how to see it like you do.”

Simple and uncomplicated—you’d lost the ability to see the world through his lens weeks ago. When every single day was centered around when you’d last eaten, when you’d eat again, and why you’d feel deserving to have that meal, simply responding to hunger alone was laughable.

“Well.. you’re hungry, right?” he asks.

And, of course, you were—the hunger was getting to the point where it was starting to become impossible to ignore, cutting through with sharp pangs and desperate urgency. So, you nod.

“Well, if it were me, I’d just go and eat right now! Then I wouldn’t feel hungry anymore!” he explains, simply. “So, you—you gotta have a reason for why you’re not eating, right?”

“Y-Yeah..” you agree, shakily. “I don’t think I’ve—earned it.. yet.”

Luffy looks confused at that, and a bit horrified. “You haven’t earned it? You don’t.. have to earn your food here—we’re all nakama, right? And none of my nakama should be going hungry.”

You blink as fresh tears fall down your face, hot and scalding. “You mean that?”

“Of course I do,” he says, nodding his head. “Who gave you that crazy idea anyways?”

“Just—myself, I guess,” you say, lamely. “I feel—guilty, if I don’t feel like I’ve waited long enough or done enough beforehand.”

You look away after that admittance, feeling awkward about pouring your heart out but also unable to lie to him anymore.

“Oi—look at me,” he prompts. When you turn your head, lip still wobbling from the influx of emotions, he says, “You come to me when you feel like that, and we’ll deal with it together, okay? You’re done dealing with this on your own.”

“Okay,” you confirm, shakily. Inside, fear sparked up—he was going to ruin all your progress, and everything would be for nothing, and you’d never be able to lose the weight back—

But, you couldn’t deny that having someone there to help you dig yourself out of this hole was exactly what you needed.

He grins, then. “Shi-shi, good! Now come on, Sanji’s been waiting for a while—he’s gonna clobber me for making you cry, but…”

You listen to him trail on, and smile, standing up to follow him. Maybe you’d feel terribly guilty about this later…but when faced with such a hopeful ray of sunshine, you couldn’t bring yourself to turn it away.
