Work Text:
The lift shudders and stops.
Cody glances at the control panel, then sighs. That would explain why Boil has been giggling to himself all morning.
Beside him, his General strokes a hand over his beard in the way he does when he's trying to hide a smile.
"It seems as if there's been somewhat of a malfunction, Commander." He says, amusement leaking through his words.
"A malfunction in some people's brains, sir, yes." Cody agrees with a grumble. Because Boil wouldn't have done this alone. This had all the hallmarks of a conspiracy.
"I had thought Ghost Company were feeling particularly sprightly today." His General observes.
Cody hums, non-committal and pulls out his datapad. Finds the page he's looking for. He glances up at his General, and tilts the pad so they can both see it. His General takes the invitation, curious, and steps closer to peer down at it.
"What is -" he asks, then cuts himself off with an "Oh." The sound is pure delight, and Cody hides a smile as he glances up to see the expression on his face. Blue-grey eyes are dancing with mischief, and his lips are compressed with the effort not to smile. It's rare that he sees his General truly happy, and he takes a moment to savour the warmth of it.
Open on the pad, is the betting chat that his brothers think he doesn't know about. The same brothers who have either forgotten, or not realised, that as Marshall Commander he has access to all the communications of all the men under his command.
The evidence speaks for itself. This was indeed a planned event. Several of the men have them down for love confessions, even more for kissing, and he scrolls through a significant number of increasingly lewd suggestions. Some of which are described in worrying detail.
Cody sighs in disappointment. His brothers really are awful.
Then glances across at his General whose eyebrows are rising steadily up his forehead, humour dancing in his eyes, and Cody doesn't bother to hide his smirk.
He's careful not to glance at the security camera in the corner of the lift.
"There's something I feel I should tell you, sir."
From the corner of his eye, he sees the chat explode with messages. He can't quite read them without it being obvious, but there's definitely a lot of exclamation marks.
"Oh?"
"I," he starts, slightly hesitantly, "hope it won't affect our working relationship, sir."
Cody regrets the fact that he never took the opportunity to drown Crys in his tube. GAR chats do not need emojis.
"I'm sure you are far too professional to ever let that happen, my dear Commander." His General reassures, eyes lit with both humour and intrigue, and the corner of his mouth twisted into that little shit-stirring smile. His General has caught the gist of his plan, if not the final outcome, and is absolutely happy to cause as much chaos as possible.
Cody takes a deep breath.
"I'm afraid it's a confession of sorts, sir."
"I'm absolutely sure there's nothing you could confess that would alarm me in the slightest, my dear." His General's tucked his hands into the sleeves of his robes. "In fact, there are likely a few things you could confess that I would be delighted to hear, and some that I might actually have matching confessions for."
Cody can't help but smirk at him. Pauses for a second to let the tension build.
"I'm afraid, sir, that I don't actually like tea."
His General draws in a sharp breath, a cover for laughter that he manages to mould into offence, mostly by clutching a hand to his chest.
The chat goes deadly still.
"I see." His General pronounces in grave tones.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"I shall have to meditate on this, Commander."
"I understand, sir."
His General shakes his head slightly. Regretful and disappointed. The chat is starting up again, there's a lot of all caps and even more exclamation marks.
"After all this time, Cody." His General says, the broken heartbreak in his voice deeply undermined by the laughter in his eyes "I thought I knew you."
"I hesitate to suggest this, sir, but perhaps you have me muddled with one of my brothers. I am told we look rather similar."
"I confess, I do sometimes struggle to tell you and Master Yoda apart."
Oh, that was uncalled for.
"Understandable, sir, for someone of your... capabilities."
His General's eyebrows climb upwards, highly amused, and Cody blinks innocently at him.
"Well," his General starts, and it's Cody's turn to brace himself and hide his intrigue because that's the tone of voice his General uses before all haran breaks loose. "If it's a test of my capabilities you're wanting," Cody shuts the pad off, because he does not need to see his brothers using those particular emojis.
A soft sound has Cody glancing upwards as the access panel on the roof of the lift shifts aside.
Oh kriff, yes.
Cody feels a familiar invisible force wrap around him, one that feels like safety and exhilaration all wrapped into one, and then he's being flung upwards, through the gap.
He can't laugh, can't whoop with glee as he flies, as much as he wants to, the sound will echo and ruin the point of this exercise, so he tears down his mental shields, lets his General hear it anyway. Tucks into a roll, flipping and twisting as he reaches the arch of his trajectory, and lands, knees bent, on a support beam as he starts to fall. There are some things you just can't do with a jetpack.
His General lands next to him, in a flutter of brown robes, a second later. There's a beaming grin painted right across his face, joyful and unrestrained, and Cody knows that he's going to remember this moment forever.
"So," his General says with a smirk, "are my capabilities to your satisfaction, Commander?"
Cody hums. "I expect they'll be adequate, sir."
His General huffs a laugh, and Cody leaps across the lift shaft so he can get to the emergency access panel by the doors. Turns and offers his General his hand, as if he'll need the help to cross.
"Why thank you, my dear." His General says, sliding his fingers into Cody's grip with deliberate carefulness.
When they're both balanced on the ledge by the still closed doors, Cody turns to his General and says "I know Jedi don't seek revenge..."
His General smiles serenely at him.
"We are, however, known for our sense of justice."
Cody is careful not to cackle as he presses the button to open the doors. Between them, they'll come up with some excellent ways to terrorise his brothers.
