Song: Cold As Ice - Foreigner

Scott Summers was preparing for any other case he’s been given before. Something about this one was different, yes it was about a murder but that was not it. It was the fact he was going against Logan .

He wasn’t nervous, far from it. He was one of the best - if not the best state attorney here. He won almost every case he’s had.

If he was being honest with himself he was excited. He didn’t want to recognize his reason behind his excitement. He just told himself that it was because he would destroy Logan.

When Scott first met Logan in court it was like a breath of fresh air. Not in a sense that he needed it - but he was different. Logan was louder and had a totally different demeanor compared to other attorneys Scott’s seen. It made Logan almost desirable. Scott would never go through with it though.

He obviously looked Logan up after their first case against each other, I mean, who wouldn’t? At the time, Logan was just a defense attorney out of nowhere. He had never seen him or heard of him at any firm. His take on his job was nothing he had ever seen before. But now, Logan had his own firm. He also had many connections. Detective Wagner, Sydney, and Private Investigator Darkholme. Which he was surprised about at first since his attorney general - Charles, tried to work with her and it apparently did not go well. The famous journalist Ororo Munroe, he also had great security from a girl named Marie LeBeau. Scott had also run into his little assistant Pietro Maximoff - that guy was always in a hurry though.

Scott had his own people to back him up. He was picked up by a well-respected Attorney General. He wouldn’t know where he’d be without him. Charles has a Deputy Attorney General - Erik Lehnsherr, who wasn’t as welcoming as Charles. They have an amazing scientist who could practically analyze anything. Scott and Hank are pretty good friends. Jean Grey is also a strong attorney, and they have Detective Frost - Scott calls her Emma though. Scott was confident in his team but he could not help being jealous.

Scott had a few hours before court started. It had been going on already for a couple days but this was the day he’d actually get to argue against Logan.

Even with all this confidence, Scott couldn't help but be a little bit anxious. It finally started to hit him that this was a murder case. Charles told him that he could do it. Of course Scott trusted Charles’ opinion. He always did.

He had to make a last minute meeting with Stryker, just to make sure he had everything right.

Scott was finally able to sit down with Stryker. He began to reassure him, “Okay, this is just to make sure I have everything correct. Just try to relax okay? I understand that this is most likely a very traumatizing situation.” He unpacked his notes and heard Stryker take a deep sigh, “Yeah. He was a good man. It’s depressing he didn’t get his honorable discharge. He definitely deserved one.” Scott looked up at Styker’s face, there was no emotion. He knew grief was shown in many different ways, so he couldn’t blame him. Scott gathered his notes and began running through the timeline, “So, you and a couple colleagues were in your office when you heard a gun go off. You guys then followed the sound to find John Wraith dead on the floor. A few feet away was a revolver, which has been traced to Wade Wilson. David North then went to check the clock-out times to see Wade Wilson clocked out a little bit before he pulled the trigger. Sound right?”

Stryker nodded his head. Scott wondered how someone could ever kill someone. Especially someone they’ve known for years. He never doubted a case that Charles gave him, but what was the reason for Wade to kill him? The only reason he could think of is Wade going crazy. That could be it, it’s the military after all. He hesitated before asking but he needed to know, “Do you know a possible reason why he killed John?” Scott studied Stryker’s face as he pondered. There was still no emotion, but he had to keep telling himself grief shows differently. “Not really. I mean, Wade has always been reckless. He’s played with the line between legal and illegal. When he was younger he had some misdemeanors.” Stryker replied. Scott quickly wrote that down in his notes. “That’s good. I can try and see if I can get my higher ups to get his criminal record. This is a murder case so the jury will be more likely to be on our side. So there shouldn’t be much to worry about.” Scott explained. Stryker sighed again, “That’s good.”

Scott let him go and began collecting his notes. This whole murder thing still made him nervous. On his way to the hotel he saw a cafe, maybe that could calm him down. It would give him the space to look over the case one more time. He could also use a coffee from his lack of sleep.

He left the hotel, feeling slightly relaxed as the breeze hit his face. The cafe was not that far, he needed to walk anyway. It let him think, even though he was already thinking too much. As he walked, his brain went back to Logan. Scott was excited to argue with him in court because of how much Logan annoyed him. He really hoped Logan wouldn’t go all out with this case. No one would pull out a bunch of theatrics for a murder case, right?

Scott never identified why Logan annoyed him so much. He was really good at his job, he respected him for that. He knew how Logan worked, he’s had cases against him before. He is very expressive about his arguments, asks questions in a way to get someone to trip over his own words–even if the person was in the right, and he seemed to never doubt himself. Like he was always right no matter what. He’s also heard of Logan’s ways from other attorneys like Jean. Jean would always tease him about how much attention he paid to Logan. His argument was that it was just his personality.

Song: Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne

Scott finally arrived at the cafe. The walk was a bit longer than he thought it would be, but he didn’t mind.

The line to order was ultimately pretty short. He had already decided what he was going to order, an Americano. Something simple to get it made quickly. Which ended up working in his favor since he got it in five minutes.

He found a place to sit in a nice quiet corner. He could still hear the music in the background, which he didn’t mind. A new song started, it sounded familiar. It was Avril Lavigne, Jean introduced Scott to Avril Lavigne when they were seniors in high school. He was a little shocked that such a modern cafe would be playing a song from 20 years ago.

He tried his hardest to focus on his notes but his mind kept going back to Logan. He hated how much Logan took up his thoughts recently. He just kept telling himself that it was because of the case. He often overheard Erik talk about how Logan was not going to get far with his methods. But look at him now, he’s always busy. Once again, Scott ignored the fact he found that out when he was–in Jean’s words ‘internet stalking’ him.

It was like perfect timing because the next thing he heard was, “Hey there Summers!” It was Logan. He sat right in front of Scott with his classic smirk. Scott sighed trying to stay professional, “What do you need?” Logan sat his cup down and relaxed in his seat. “You know the classic ‘lawyers trying to drop the trial’ conversation.” Logan answered. Scott scoffed, “What? You're afraid you’re not going to win? I mean–I get it’s a tuff charge but I did not think you would be this desperate.” Logan sighed and still had a relaxed gaze fixed on Scott. The lyrics seem to grow louder in the background.

Five years from now

She sits at home

Feeding the baby, she’s all alone

She turns on TV

Guess who she sees

Skater boy rockin’ up MTV

“This song kind of reminds me of you Summers.” Logan said. Scott took in his words and the song lyrics. No one has ever said something like that to him since he dated someone in college. To be fair, he didn’t date much. He quickly broke his train of thought–not wanting to go down that rabbit hole.

“Very funny. I’m not lonely, Howlett” Scott deadpanned. “Not that, I’m talking about you feeding into the foolish role of a prosecutor.” Logan responded. Scott sighed, “Well someone has to do it, and it’s not foolish.” They both studied each other's faces. Scott continued, “Someone needs to defend the law - just like how you defend criminals.” Logan chuckled, “That’s such a close-minded way of thinking Summers. Not all of them are criminals, that’s just how you're told.” Scott scoffed again as Logan went on, “I find it really hard to believe that you think that all defendants are criminals. I heard about your case from last week–he was innocent and you knew it. Plus I’ve ‘beaten’ you before. It’s not a competition though.” He was right. When he first got into law he thought the same way as Logan. Sometimes deep down he knew the defendant was innocent. It was easier to win a case with a ‘the defendant is guilty’ mindset, that’s what Charles and Erik told him.

Logan broke the silence, “I always wondered why lawyers have referred to ‘winning’ or ‘losing’ cases. It’s not a competition, it’s about getting justice.” Scott humphed, “I know that.” Logan smirked, “Do you?” Scott rolled his eyes and gathered his things. “Leaving so soon?” Logan asked. Scott glared at him, “You’re clearly here to waste my time, and I’m not letting you waste it.” Logan shrugged his shoulders, “Okay. See you soon Summers.”

Scott gave him a quick nod and left the cafe. He was glad to feel the breeze outside. He wasn’t ready to interact with Logan before the trial. Walking back, he realized he came off as rude but at this rate he did not care. Talking with Logan did help him take the whole murder case stress off his shoulders. This was going to be a piece of cake. Scott thought it was laughable that Logan was trying to drop the charges. It’s a murder, case if that doesn’t scream guilty Scott didn’t know what else would.

Scott arrived at his hotel room to begin getting ready. He grabbed his suit out of the small closet and his shoes from his suitcase. He quickly put on his pants and buttoned up his shirt. He found the mirror and began tying his tie. A strand of hair fell in front of his face which he pushed back. He wasn’t running late but he just had to get ready quickly–always. He put on the rest of his suit and his belt. Once he was done he grabbed his briefcase and headed to the courthouse.

As soon as he opened the door to the courthouse he could feel the gloominess of the trial. It was very quiet as he made his way to the courtroom. He had some small talk with Stryker and some of his witnesses. Ultimately trying to keep the mood light but serious. Scott noticed how inexpressive the witnesses were. During the initial interview they all had similar personalities to Stryker. He didn’t want to call anyone out, it would be rude.

Scott found Hank and was glad he did. It’s nice to talk to someone you enjoy being around. They had random conversations ranging from the DNA in the case to the hangout they had two weeks prior. The trial started at 9 and was going to end at 5. A standard hearing but so much was happening. They had to go through the jurors and Scott had to present his evidence. He was grateful that the attorneys got to verify jurors but sometimes he wished the judge would do it.

Song: Say Yes To Heaven - Lana Del Rey

As soon as it hit 8:30 Scott and Logan were called into the courtroom to voir dire.

Scott finally felt normal with this trial. He was in his comfort zone interviewing jurors–he could do it in his sleep. Scott began, “Okay. Arthur Curry, have you ever been involved with the military?” “No sir,” he responded. “Have you or are you involved in solving crimes involving murders?” Scott asked. “No sir,” he said. Scott finished going through a few more questions. “Is there any reason you can not serve on this jury?” “No sir,” he answered. He went through the rest of the jurors, this went on until just a little past nine.

The judge began reading of the selected jurors, “The following individuals have been selected to serve as jurors in this case. When your name is called, please step forward and take a seat in the jury box. Juror #1: Arthur Curry, Juror #2: John Stewart, Juror #3: Barry Allen, Juror #4: Hal Jordan, Juror #5: Diana Prince, Juror #6: Ray Palmer, Juror #7: Clark Kent, Juror #8: Shiera Hall, Juror #9: Bruce Wayne, Juror #10: Ronnie Raymond, Juror #11: Oliver Queen, and Juror #12: John Jones. The alternates are #13: Karen Starr and #14: Jay Abrams. Thank you all for your patience. You have now been sworn in as jurors. Please remain in the jury box as we proceed with instructions regarding the case.”

Scott had been through this process hundreds of times, he was just waiting to open his case. Stryker sat next to him, he was unreadable. He didn’t want to question his demeanor but it had been off the entire time. There wasn’t that much time to ponder on it before he was called up to the podium.

He could feel everyone’s eyes on him. This was something he slowly got used to. He quietly sighed before introducing his argument,
“Your Honor, members of the jury, the evidence in this case is clear, the facts are undeniable, and the truth will speak for itself. My role is not to tell you how to think, but to show you the undeniable reality that the defendant’s actions violated not only the law but the principles of accountability and justice that we all share. Justice isn’t about interpretation; it’s about facts. And the facts will leave no room for doubt. I urge you to carefully consider what’s presented and remain steadfast in your duty to see the truth for what it is. When the evidence is laid bare, the path forward will be clear. Justice will demand a verdict of guilt.” During his opening statement, he noticed Logan’s gaze on him. Scott knew better than to reciprocate it, especially during work. He kept that principle for about 2 seconds before he met Logan’s gaze.

Scott settled in his seat while Logan made his way to the podium to introduce his argument. He spoke with such confidence even if he was wrong. He looked put together for someone who’s rather rugged–Scott chose to ignore why he knew that as well. Another thing Scott noticed was how much of a ‘baby face’ Logan had. Logan had years on Scott but he looked like he could be only a year older than Scott. He liked how Logan’s voice sounded, which to Scott was a plus when a case could get rather boring. That’s what Scott told himself. Scott was more forced on his observations but he knew Logan’s argument was about Wade Wilson being innocent. He’d heard enough of it anyway.

The only reason Scott knew it was time for him to start presenting his witnesses was having to stop analyzing Logan’s features. Scott called Stryker to the witness stand, “William Stryker, You're here because Wade Wilson murdered John Wraith. What were you doing during the time of the murder?” Stryker moved closer to the microphone, “I was in my office speaking with my colleagues David North and Yuriko Oyama. We were listening to our recorded meeting notes. As we were discussing we heard a weird thud. We followed the noise to find John dead on the ground. I sent one of my colleagues to see if anyone was still here. No one was around.” His voice was extremely monotone. Scott wished he could tell him to put some emotion into his voice but this had to be authentic. “Where and when did you find the weapon in question?” Scott continued. “We found a revolver 10 feet away from John. We found it after walking around for a minute.” Stryker answered. Scott ended his questioning, letting Logan begin his cross-examination.

Scott noticed Logan’s face as we walked up, he had pure hatred written all over his face. “How loud were these meeting notes?” Logan asked. Scott thought it was a weird question to start off with but he knew Logan was different. He was very firm with his words. All Scott heard him say was something about how far away the room of the incident was to Stryker’s office. Scott didn’t even notice Stryker’s reaction. Logan went on with his questions, “Who all was walking with you to look for the revolver?” Stryker’s face told everyone he thought Logan’s questions were stupid, “My colleagues, David North and Yuriko Oyama. Like I said.” Scott’s eyes were still fixed on Logan’s face, and he saw his stupid smirk. “Okay. Who did you send to see if anyone was still around?” Logan questioned. Scott heard Stryker hesitate but he wasn’t watching. Stryker gulped, “..David North,” he responded. Logan just kept moving on with his questions, “Another thing, Wade Wilson according to you, is one of your best when it comes to ‘getting the job done’. The police photos show uncleaned blood still at the scene. Wouldn’t you think that someone like Wade would clean it up? Sure, the body was still there but it’s quicker to clean up blood than to hide a whole body when people are coming towards the scene.” Logan was a bit louder as spoke. Scott was confused by his explanation. Simply because that’s how he heard it. Logan didn’t actually say that. It was the result of Scott not being focused and picking up parts of the cross-examination.

Stryker found his seat next to Scott, not regarding his presence at all. Hank was called up to the stand and Scott briefly explained the DNA found on the revolver. Thankfully, Logan didn’t cross-examine this.

They breaked for lunch. Scott got some food from the hotel and ate quickly. He didn’t acknowledge his behaviour in the courtroom, he was more focused on piecing together more points.

Scott continued calling his witnesses, David North and Yuriko Oyama. They both said the same thing. This was unfortunate for Scott’s argument. Logan cross-examined both of them. Scott picked up on the fact that the questions were all different. He was still heavily distracted.

Logan brought up his first witness, Piotr Rasputin. “You were with Wade and John before the incident in question happened. Was there anything up with either Wade or John.” Logan began. Piotr responded, “Yes I was there. I agreed to help Wade move some boxes with John. They were just joking around with each other like old friends. Wade asked for my help because he wanted to get this done by the time he got to leave so he could take his girlfriend out on a date. We were able to finish on time and by the time we finished John was called up to his higher-ups office.” Logan tries to convey a very relaxed tone, “Was Wade acting any different between the last two weeks. According to most psychologists that’s the standard timeframe,” it sounded like he was trying to joke around at the end. “No. I haven’t always gotten along with Wade. If he did this, I would not be here defending.” Piotr choked up a little bit.

Scott didn’t have much to cross-examine but he still did. Piotr actually had emotion in his voice unlike his witnesses. “What time did Wade tell you he had to leave?” Scott asked. Piotr answered almost immediately, “5:30. I saw him clock out.” That didn’t go exactly how Scott planned. David North told him that Wade stayed late and clocked out at 6:00. Scott sighed and continued, “When Wade clocked out, did he follow John or go to his higher ups?” Piotr slightly shook his head before answering, “I did not see him. I highly doubt that he would go back. He was very excited for his date.” Scott ended his cross-examination.

Logan brought up his next witness, Vanessa Carlysle. She was Wade’s girlfriend. “Poor girl,” he thought. What Scott got from her statement was Wade got home around 6:20 and brought them to the movies to see Sonic 3. Something didn’t click. Scott researched the distance between the incident and Wade’s home, it was only 20 minutes. He was grateful to finally have something to truly cross-examine. He was starting to think Charles was wrong about assigning him this case. After she finished giving her testimony, Scott made his way out of his seat. “Ms. Carlysle, you said Wade got home at 6:20. Mr. Rasputin stated that Mr. Wilson clocked out at 5:30. It only takes 20 minutes to get to you and Mr. Wilson’s home from his job. Why is that?” Scott questioned. Vanessa pondered before answering, “I know he stopped to get flowers before coming home, so maybe it’s that..” She didn’t sound confident in her answer. Scott took that as a win. He returned to his seat since that was the only question he had and it was 5.

The judge started doing the wrap up process. It was nice that everyone was quiet. Scott’s eyes found Logan, he was having a quiet conversation with Wade. It didn’t look like anything serious. There were small smiles and held back laughter. Did Logan know him prior? Everyone on Logan’s side seemed to have the right emotions, true emotions. It felt like the plaintiff had programmed emotions.

When everyone was allowed to leave Scott let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in. He wanted to leave immediately, but of course he had to make small talk with his client.

Song: Burning Love - Elvis Presley

Besides the brief ‘we did great’ response to Stryker he talked to no one. He headed straight to his room. His thoughts changed from Logan to his performance. Sure, no one truly noticed how distracted and distant he was from the court but that didn’t help Scott from being less disappointed.

He rushed through the door and went straight to the bathroom. He tried to give himself a pep talk, he needed to get his head back into the game. But Scott wasn’t exactly perfect at pep talks so he actually started slightly yelling at himself, “Come on Scott, this is your job. You’re supposed to be professional. Not staring at someone like a high schooler having a crush-

Wait.

No.

No.

Fuck.

His rambling admitted something he didn’t want to believe. Yes, Jean had said something about a crush but he didn’t take it seriously. Yes, Hank joked about him caring too much about Logan before the trial. Yes, he knew way more about Logan than he should’ve for someone he barely talks too. But that shouldn’t mean anything. It doesn’t mean anything. Right?

Even though he didn’t want to tell Jean she was sort of right, he needed to call her.

Scott threw himself on the bed and called Jean. The phone only rang once before Jean picked up, “Hey Scott what’s up!” Scott sighed, “Hey..” Scott recapped his disaster of a court session. Which ended up with him off the bed pacing.

“It’s just…I can’t believe I let this happen. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He’s…Logan, of all people! I mean, we’re on opposite sides of the courtroom. And what does that even say about me??” Scott rambled. “That you have questionable taste. But that’s old news. Remember college? Or should I list names?” Jean calmly teased him. Scott ignored her tiny attack at him and continued rambling, “Jean, I’m serious. He’s so irritating. He’s smug, he’s reckless, and he’s got that stupid smirk that makes me want to throw him out the window–” Jean cut in, “and kiss him senseless?” Scott paused, slightly flustered at the idea. “Don’t start,” he groaned. Jean heard the pause and knew what that meant, “Wait a second. This is a real crush? A real one? Oh my gosh, Scott Summers is human after all.” Scott hated the word ‘crush’ being thrown out there. He didn’t want to believe it. “Jean–” he tried interjecting. Jean ignored him, “I’m just saying you have talked about Logan before. What was it you called him? Something like ‘the most insufferable man alive’? Those are some strong words for someone you don’t think about.” Scott began panicking, “That doesn’t mean anything! I can’t. I can’t like him. He’s cocky and impossible, and the way he–ugh, he’s just so frustrating.”

He heard Jean laugh through the phone, “Scott, that sounds a lot like denial to me. And by the way, you’re not fooling anyone.” Scott grumped, “I’m hanging up now.” Jean responded, “No you’re not. Look, feelings are messy. You’re scared because liking Logan isn’t exactly…convenient. But, Scott? You can’t control this. Honestly, I think you like it when he gets under your skin.” Scott groaned, laying back down on his bed, “I don’t like it. It’s infuriating, Jean. He’s infuriating.” “And yet here we are, having this conversation,” Jean teased. “Admit it, Scott. He challenged you in a way no one else does.” Scott dropped his hand on his face, “That’s the problem. I don’t want to be challenged, Jean. I want something simple. Predictable. Convenient.” Jean laughed again, “Since when has anything about your life been convenient? Face it Summers, you’re attracted to the storm–not the calm.” Scott let out a dry laugh, “Great. So now I’m predictable in being attracted to chaos. Thanks for that.”

Jean’s voice softened, “Scott, you’re scared because this isn’t something you can plan for or rationalize. But that’s okay. Once again, feelings are supposed to be messy. I think he’s good for you. He forces you to think differently, to loosen up a little. When’s the last time someone made you do that?” Scott had no words to say back. The truth had punched him in the face after he avoided it for so long. And now he can’t fight it anymore. “Exactly,” Jean said, breaking the silence, “Now, what you need is to stop overthinking this. Go out. Clear your head. Hell, go to a bar or something.”

Scott was skeptical at first, “A bar? That’s your big advice? Drown my feelings in overpriced drinks and bad music?” Jean’s laugh found her again, “No, it’s about getting out of your head. Have a drink, talk to people, or just sit there and people-watch. You’re so busy trying to control everything, Scott. Just let go.” Scott sighed, “I don’t know Jean.” “Come on, what’s the worst that could happen?” She challenged him. “And who knows–maybe someone will walk into that bar and annoy you enough to remind you why you’re so hung up on them in the first place.” Scott rolled his eyes, but with no negativity behind it, “You’re impossible, you know that?” “But I’m honest,” she clapped back, “Seriously though, go. Trust me, you’ll feel better.” Scott hesitated, “Fine. But if this backfires, you’re paying for my therapy.” Jean’s laugh was now more evident, “Deal. Now go. Please try and have fun for once.”

Scott hung up and changed into some more casual clothes - still nice though. As he walked out of his hotel room, he could not believe he was doing this.

Chapter Text

Song: Tears dry on their own - Amy Winehouse

Scott avoided the bar that was in the hotel. He did not need to be seen drinking by someone from the jury or something. The thing was, he did not want to go far either. He decided to go to the neighboring bar.

The bar was very… stereotypical. Dark corners, a few LED lights, and multiple TV’s broadcasting various sports games. He found an empty barstool, distancing himself from the rest of the people there. He ordered a simple whiskey on the rocks. He was about to take up Jean’s suggestion about people-watching but he couldn’t. He can’t relax.

He slowly took sips of his drinks while trying to piece together the prior court session. He could do a trial in his sleep but this was murder, so he’ll actually have to piece things together. It didn’t take him long, the story Logan is portraying is Wade was eager to leave on time to take his girlfriend on a date. So, he brought Piotr Rasputin to help him and John Wraith move some boxes. He was last seen by Piotr to clock out but was not seen again. He went to the store to buy flowers for his girlfriend and arrived at home by 6:20. That’s where the story falters. It just happens that Wade got home at 6:20, the exact time he would get home from killing John Wraith. He most likely had the flowers brought beforehand, storing them in his car or in his workplace. The camera footage he got showed Wade head towards the room of the incident. He took another sip of his drink, thankful that tomorrow was Saturday.

This whole ‘relaxing’ thing could have happened if it wasn’t for Logan. To be fair, he wouldn’t need to relax if Logan was not there. Scott told himself it was all Logan’s fault – leaning on the whole ‘extra’ factor he has going on. Not the truth. He may have been punched in the face with it but he still doesn’t want to admit that to himself. No matter how right he knew Jean was. He couldn’t deny Jean was right. He knew that.

His internal feelings battle was cut short when he heard a certain someone's voice, “Well look who it is. Should I be flattered or concerned that you’re this deep in thought over me?” Of course it was Logan. It just had to be. Scott sighed, “Don’t be.” Logan slid onto the stool next to him, “So that means you were thinking about me, was it the cross-examinations? I didn’t think that’d be so hard to process for a pretty attorney like you.” He had that stupid smirk. The one that made Scott have too many feelings to identify. He also made a mental note to try and remember Logan’s cross-examinations. “Maybe that’s because half the things you say are designed to derail me and twist the facts.” He was slightly flustered at the beginning but tried to remain serious. Scott was actually referring to their out of court conversations. He knew Logan knew that. Logan’s tone changed to a more serious one, “Or maybe… you’re starting to realize the facts aren’t as black-and-white as you want them to be. That’s gotta sting for someone who prides himself on always being the ‘good guy’.” If Scott needed confirmation that Logan was a good lawyer, this was it. Though Logan was wrong about thinking the facts aren’t black-and-white. Definitely.

“I can still be the ‘good guy’ and do my job.” Scott finally responded. “You can’t have it both ways. Either you’re fighting for the truth, or you’re not.” Logan said. Sometimes it felt like Logan was speaking in code because Scott could not understand him. That kind of made him feel insecure. “How would defending some criminals give you the moral high ground?” Scott questioned. Logan held eye contact with Scott before answering, “I want to help people who are done wrong. Yes, I have been lied to but that’s okay. I want to find justice. Thanks to my position I can defend who I want.” Their eyes were still locked on each other. Scott had many questions and reactions to give but he could only respond in defense – ironic. “You think this is easy? I’d be risking my job, my reputation. Don’t act like it’s that simple.” Scott could hear part of his voice break. Mentally begging that he didn’t hear it. Logan still carried the same tone, “It is, and how you responded really makes me think you know what’s right.” Scott hated the fact that multiple people have called him out.

Scott finally broke eye contact – letting out another sigh, “Well, this has been… enlightening. Enjoy the rest of your evening.” Scott said. Logan's face relaxed, “Leaving already? I thought you’d at least stay long enough to insult me a few more times.” His tone was lighthearted, as if nothing happened. “Tempting. But I’ve had enough of your ego for one night.” Scott gave him a very passive aggressive smile before leaving.

He quickly made his way back to his hotel room. The whole relaxing plan had gone wrong – Jean was repaying him for this. Now all he wanted was to sleep it off. He let out a deep sigh as he stood in his room. While he was getting ready for bed he heard a knock on the door. The last thing he wanted to do was deal with another person.

It was just his luck it happened to be the same person – Logan. Scott groaned behind the peephole. Maybe he could get the last laugh before bed.

He opened the door, “Are you stalking me or something?” Logan playfully rolled his eyes, “We’re in the same hotel Summers.” Logan relaxed onto the side of the door frame while Scott crossed his arms over his chest. “So you went to the bar for my attention, got here pretty quickly.” Scott casually smirked at him. Logan smiled back, “Very funny.” Scott could tell that he wasn’t just here to mess with him. “Seriously though, what do you want?” Scott inquired. Logan stood back up and glanced over the halls. “Not here. Let me in. Five minutes.”

Scott reluctantly let Logan in, and if he was being honest with himself (for once) his mind went to other scenarios when he saw Logan at his door late at night. But he quickly shut that down. Logan casually leaned on the hotel counter as if it was nothing. Scott returned to his arms-crossed position, trying to be professional. Him being in his pajamas for professional matters was something he was not a fan of.

Logan finally broke the silence, “I know you're going to believe some of this because of your little worry back at the bar.” Scott let out an annoyed grunt in response.

“Where is this going?” Scott asked. Logan looked at his feet before answering, “You know how I was in the military right?” Scott gave him a confused look, “Of course…” Logan sighed, “During my time I was apart and worked with Stryker’s unit. Trust me, whatever he says to you, is 99.99% wrong.” Why was Logan here this late to do what they had to do on Monday? Scott looked up to the ceiling in disbelief, “Did you seriously come to my room to debate? May I remind you we can do this on Monday.”

Logan gave him a passive aggressive laugh. “Yes I know that. I’m here for you . I know deep down you still have morals. When I said I want to help people who have been done wrong, I meant it. That’s how it is with Wade. It may seem like I have a personal bias towards Wade since we served together. Wade gets on my last nerve most of the time. If he actually did this to John I wouldn’t have helped him,” a change in Logan’s face was briefly shown at the mention of John’s name. “I knew John. We were inseparable until the day I left. I wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t for Stryker. I know how this man works. I've known him since I was 18. He is a con-man. He gets what he wants by taking out whatever gets in his way. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. My brother Victor hasn’t been the same since he got in the way. He’s lucky he’s alive. I’m lucky I was able to get out. Him and his two minions have roboted responses to everything. They have been through this before.”

There was a long silence after Logan spoke. Millions of thoughts went through Scott’s head. He believed him. Somewhat. All the evidence he was given prior made sense, but so did Logan’s. “So I’m just supposed to believe you?” Scott commented. Logan kept his eyes on him, “I know how it sounds. Honestly, I wouldn’t believe myself at first either. But I know you know what’s right Scott.” Logan stood back off from the counter. He wished Scott a goodnight and left.

His world was just shaken. Even if Logan was right, what was he supposed to do? Was he really going to give up his whole mindset–and career for his morals?

That’s what scared him.

Song: Basket Case - Green Day

Scott could barely sleep that night. Thank goodness he had the weekend. To him it was like they had their own mini trial except it was just between them. (Deep down he really enjoyed just ‘debating’ Logan) His whole case had been rocked and he hated to admit it – Logan was right.

As Scott continued to try and go to sleep, his past spiraling came back to him. He’s pondered the morality of his job many times, but he had to weigh the facts.

He always did that.

It paid well, he never worried about being out of work, Charles was great to him, and there wasn’t any big change – a routine. But he could not ignore the small part of him telling him to do something else.

He decided to listen to Jean and finally accept some truths.

Scott woke up very early the next morning – to get his head in the right place. He ignored a certain dream about someone he had last night and headed straight to his Attorney General. On his way his mind continued to spiral. He ended up listening to some random playlist Jean sent him to distract him.

“Basket Case? How ironic.” Scott thought.

Last night he told himself he would listen to Jean and accept the truth. He knew what she meant. She was talking about Logan but in Scott’s opinion, that could apply to this case. The whole Logan situation – he still did not know how to approach it. Maybe he can let his guard down outside of court. Only a little bit.

The more Scott ran through the case and timeline the more Logan’s argument made sense. Going to Charles’s office was definitely the right decision.

He arrived quicker than he thought. Charles was sipping coffee at his desk. He had a chess game setup. Erik had pulled up a chair and joined him.

Scott gulped, “Hello Mr. Xavier, do you happen to know if we have any more evidence for the Wilson case?” Charles set his coffee down and smiled, “You know you can call me Charles, Scott. But not on me right now, why? Is everything alright? Usually you don’t even talk to me during a trial.” Charles had a playful tone in his voice but there was a slight worried undertone. “Uhm.. yeah, everything is alright. Just really trying to make these arguments 100%.” Scott responded, trying to hide his doubt. Charles kept a neutral face, “I can always get Stryker to come back and talk.” Scott quickly thought if he should talk to Stryker, but that would probably blow his cover.

“Actually, I think I got it. Maybe I just needed to talk it out!” Scott fake laughed. He briefly looked over at Erik, and he could tell he could see him worry. Little did he know Charles saw it too.

As he walked to his office, his thoughts found their way back to him. Should he really be doing this? Why did he even think Logan was right? His gut was telling him Logan was right and he wasn’t the most accepting about it. All the facts of his job being good were falling apart as he kept thinking over this. Maybe he should just stop thinking about it, go back to his case, but he knew he couldn’t.

Being in his office calmed his nerves. He wished Jean was here but she was on her own case. The thought about looking over the case files sounded logically correct, but he could not push himself to do it. His attention was brought over to his computer. The words Logan told him about Stryker’s business cases came back. What if the cases weren’t in his name?

A quick search of his business partners and colleagues gave him his answers. Scott was able to connect Stryker to all these cases. It was almost in plain sight. How did his colleagues not notice this? Him and Emma were definitely having a conversation about this. Now he had his confirmation of Logan being right but what now. He couldn’t exactly start defending Wade. Or so he thought. There was a way he could help Wade’s case.

Was it unethical? Extremely. Was it needed? Scott wanted it to be.

Logan was owed an apology.

Scott began planning out what he was going to say. You can’t exactly go up to the defense attorney of your case and say “Hey I want to join your side”. So many things could go wrong. Logan could snitch and tell Charles – or worse, tell Erik. His reputation could be destroyed. There was another thing Logan was right about, it’s not a competition. Logan could also just straight up not believe him. But based on his recent behavior, Scott knew Logan would believe him. It still didn’t make his anxiety go away.

Eventually he left his office. He didn’t have all day to get his plan to work. Short goodbyes were exchanged as he left. It was like the world knew what he was thinking because it was way brighter compared to the cloudiness hours earlier.

Conveniently, Logan’s firm was not that far. That allowed him to not have time to second-guess himself. On his way, Scott shot Jean a ‘thank you’ text. He didn’t expect her to reply, she’s busy. He smiled when she replied, “Of course, good luck idiot.”

When he arrived he had that weird feeling in his stomach. No matter how much he wanted to turn heel and run, he knew he had to at least talk to Logan. He took a deep breath and finally headed towards the entrance.

Song: The Other Side - Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron

When the door was open, Scott was met with refreshing cool air. The second he walked in he could feel eyes on him. In all honesty he still doesn’t believe he’s here. He walked up to the front desk, the girl behind it was Marie LeBeau. Before he could get a word out she already gave him a skeptical look. How does one even get through this conversation?

“Is Mr. Howlett here?” he asked, trying to stay professional. Marie’s eyes analyzed him, “Yes. What do you need?” Scott could tell she was also trying to remain professional. “I need to talk to him. It’s urgent.” he responded. She took a quick glance at her computer before answering, “Well, most people have to wait but you're an exception. He’s not busy, he’s in his office down the hall to the left.” Scott gave her a nod and left. “What did she mean by ‘an exception’?” Scott pondered.

He found Logan’s office, his nerves kicking back in again. He just has to push through it. Even though Marie told him he wasn’t busy he still knocked. He heard a “come in” and let himself in.

Logan’s eyes met Scott’s, they widened. “Didn’t expect to see you here, you’re not here to wish me good luck are you?” Logan asked with his usual confidence after regaining his composure. Scott picked up on that and found it amusing. “Not exactly,” Scott answered. “If anyone knows I’m here, I am done for.” Scott said, taking a more serious tone. Logan matched his tone, “Well you’re already here which means you know something’s up, I’m listening.” Scott sighed, “Look, I’ve been going through the evidence. Again and again. I thought I was seeing what I wanted to see before, but now… Now I’m not so sure I can look at this case the same way anymore.”

Logan sat back in his chair inviting Scott to sit down in front of him, “Go on.” The way Logan seemed so relaxed while Scott was gambling with his future slightly annoyed him. Thankfully, he was more focused on the case than his feelings. He let out a small frustrated laugh, shaking his head, “Why do you always make things harder than they actually are.” Logan shrugged with a small smirk, “Habit. Keeps people honest. Now what is it that you wanted to tell me?”

Scott could tell Logan knew what he wanted to say. “You were right, Wade’s innocent. Stryker’s hands in this case are dirty in one way or another.” Logan gave him a genuine smile – something Scott didn’t know he needed. “Well I could’ve told you that. Hell, I think I did.” Logan responded with some playfulness. They both laughed a little as the tension died down. “So, what are you going to do now?” Logan asked. Scott sighed before responding, “I want to help you, that’s why I came here. Ethically, this is wrong, but a friend of mine encouraged me to accept some truths.” Their eyes met, Scott could probably stare into them for hours. They reminded him of nature, beautiful.

Logan broke the silence, “Truths, plural? Is there more?” he teased. Scott snapped back to reality, “Maybe that’s something for you to find out,” matching Logan’s energy. “Seriously, I want to help. It won’t be easy but I think we can do it. I mean it,” Scott continued. “I’d like that, who knew we’d be a team.” Logan said. Scott accidentally let out a cheesy smile. Logan caught it, “Careful Scott, I might start thinking you’re not such a pain in the ass after all.” Scott rolled his eyes playfully, “Don’t get used to it.” Thankfully he was able to cover the faint blush he had after he heard Logan say his name.

The two quickly got comfortable and began working. “Going back to your cross-examination on Vanessa, the whole time thing,” Logan stated. “Wade’s timeline leaves a lot of room for suspicion. Especially based on the clock out time and the distances between Styker’s office and Wade’s house.” Scott explained. Logan nodded in agreement, “I have another person to testify on Monday, her name is Eloise Phimster. Her and Wade were on the phone the entire time Wade headed home. You can ask her to explain why Wade took so long to get home.” Logan suggested. Scott nodded his head. “I can’t believe we’re actually doing this,” he admitted. Logan chuckled in response.

They worked together for the next two hours before agreeing to go to dinner. The thought of going to dinner with Logan made Scott very giddy. He agreed to meet him at a restaurant outside of town so no one would see them. Scott was grateful he packed extra for his hotel room since his house was nowhere near the courthouse. He assumed Logan was in the same situation since he also had a room at the hotel. As he was getting ready he facetimed Jean. Even though they were both in their late 30s, it felt like he was back in school again. He purposely ignored telling her that he and Logan are working together, he still technically works for Charles. Calling Jean made him feel so much better.

Scott arrived only a minute after Logan did. They went inside together. It was really awkward. Scott wondered if Logan had any of the same thoughts he did. Jean kept teasing him about him going on a ‘date’. Deep down it really felt that way, even if the reason was for ‘work purposes’. They were led to a table, sitting across from each other.

“I thought we should try and relax a bit. What you're doing is extremely tough.” Logan began. Scott smiled in response, “Thank you” They both ordered their drinks and started talking about the most random things. Scott learned about Logan’s fond memories with John, Wade, Kevin, and a girl named Kayla. Scott brought up some rather embarrassing memories with Jean and Hank. They talked like they were old friends. Scott was genuinely surprised about how much Logan and him had in common. They picked back up almost seamlessly after ordering their food. “How did you come up with your way in court? I don’t see it often,” Scott questioned. “Are you trying to copy my ways?” Logan joked. “I mean, I want people to see how much I and the defendant care about what is going on. Emotions are a big part, which for the most part comes naturally but court can scare people. So the attorney also showing emotion can make up for that. The loud part is just to emphasize the point, like if you were reading a book. I do try and stay professional though,” Logan replied.

How genuine Logan was is what caught Scott’s feelings in the first place. Whether he realized it or not. They shortly got their food after that. Scott noticed the olives on the side of his plate. He hates olives but he didn’t want it to seem like he did to the chef. “Hey do you want these? I hate olives,” he asked Logan. Logan took up his offer, “Thanks, I love olives.” Scott continued eating his food, little did he know that Logan also didn’t like olives but he could tell Scott was uncomfortable.

They talked more throughout the evening. The reason they were here was for work but they barely touched the subject. Logan asked for the check as they finished up. “50/50 split?” Scott suggested. “I got it, don’t worry,” Logan replied. Scott was about to protest but Logan had already signed the check. “I’ll pay you back, you didn’t need to do that.” Scott said. “It’s fine Scotty, I said I’ll pay for it.” Logan reminded him. Scott quickly hid his face after hearing the nickname.

They went their separate ways when they arrived back at the hotel. Scott laid down happier than he was last night. The thought of working with Logan was way more calming than it was before.

The next day they met back up on how and what they were going to say in court on Monday. Scott struggled on focussing again but he noticed Logan was struggling with the same thing. They both shared eye contact that lasted a bit too long, glances they both tried to hide, and messed up words. It was more comfortable compared to Friday’s mess up.

“You know, for a murder trial I’m surprised it won’t take that long.” Scott remarked. Logan agreed, “We got through more on Friday than usual. My past murder cases have taken longer than this one is projected to be.” Scott raised his eyebrows in shock. “What? You haven’t done a murder case before?” Logan commented. He avoided the question but Logan picked up on the answer quickly. “Well then you must be under a bunch of stress,” Logan said in a relaxing voice. Scott moved on from the topic, “Maybe it’s so short because of my horrible argument.” They both laughed in response. “Don’t say that, it’s not your fault Stryker’s a horrible person.” Logan added.

After a while, it seemed like they had enough for at least Monday. “I think we are good for Monday. We can work together after the session tomorrow if you want.” Logan said. Scott agreed, “You really want to hang out with me that bad?” Scott returned playfully. “Oh you read me so well, you should be a lawyer,” Logan joked back. They both laughed before Scott headed back to his hotel room.

Song: Sailor Song - Gigi Perez

It was the Monday after the court session, both of the boys had met in Logan’s room. The day felt like it was dragging on. Scott and Logan’s plan to work together started to work in court today, which was something to celebrate. But, they needed to keep working. Scott glanced over at Logan who was standing in front of the window, presumably deep in thought.

“You’ve been quiet,” Scott finally spoke up. “And you’ve been fidgety.” Logan added, with no heat behind it. Scott didn’t even notice he had been fidgeting with his legal pad. He quickly placed it next to him and brought his attention to the other man.

Scott sighed, “I’m trying to figure out how to say something, and you’re not making it easy by standing over there, brooding like a tortured anti-hero.” he tried to keep it light-hearted. He wasn’t exactly planning on doing this tonight, there could be so many ways this could go wrong. The older man turned his head to Scott, rocking a confused look. Now that he said it, he can’t stop now.

He stood up from Logan’s bed, “I’ve been distracted. By you. In and out of court. It’s not just the way you handle your cases or the way you get under my skin,” Scott hesitated, “It’s you. You make me want to be better, and it’s infuriating.” Logan slowly walked over to Scott holding a strong gaze on him. He started to feel small under Logan’s gaze. He couldn’t believe he was actually doing this.

“So you're saying I’m your moral compass?” Logan teased. It was like Logan didn’t want to believe where this was going. “I’m saying I care about you. And maybe I’ve cared for a while. Maybe that’s why I’ve been so.. restless.” Scott let out with a little bit of frustration. He spoke in ‘maybes’ just in case Logan didn’t feel the same way, he could always retreat back to denying his feelings. Logan’s face was more serious than before, “Serious?” Scott met his eyes. “Serious.” he confirmed. Logan let out a deep breath, “You’re not the only one.”

The silence was heavy, not exactly uncomfortable but with all this out, Scott didn’t know how to react. He slowly stepped forward, keeping his eyes on Logan. “You’re restless, huh?” Logan teased with a soft voice. A small smile crept on Scott’s face, “You make me restless” Logan’s smirk came back to his face, “Good,”

Before Scott had a chance to second guess himself, Logan’s lips brushed against his, closing the distance between them. For a moment, neither of them moved–like they were testing the waters, afraid to break the spell they were under. Logan tilted his head slightly, deepening the kiss. Everything going on felt like it disappeared.

Scott’s hands found their way to Logan’s shirt, gripping to fabric as if he would disappear if he let go. Logan rested his hands lightly on Scott’s waist, steadying them, grounding them. The two broke away, resting their heads on each other’s. Logan let out a breathless laugh, “Restless, huh?” “Shut up,” Scott muttered. There was no heat in it. His face was flushed, which the taller man noticed. Scott saw Logan’s reaction, “I hate you” he attempted to hide his smile. “You don’t,” Logan said more sincerely. There was a brief silence as both of the men smiled.

“So does this mean I win the case?” Logan commented, purely playful. Laughter filled the air as Scott denied Logan’s comment. Deep down he knew Logan was going to win the case. Scott finally let go of Logan and glanced over their stack of files. “We still have work to do,” Scott disappointedly sighed. Hoping the man in front of him didn’t notice.

They eventually got comfortable on Logan’s bed instead of using the desk they pulled up and started to work. The best they could. “So, uh.. The witness statements.” Scott attempted to start. Logan leaned back, “Sure, let's pretend you’re focused right now.” Scott glared at him to find a very smug look on his face. “I am focused. Unlike you, I don’t need theatrics to-” he was quickly cut off by Logan, “To what? Work while thinking about a kiss?” Scott got extremely flustered by the simple mention of it. “Do you ever shut up?”

They were able to get some work done but Scott’s exhaustion was eating at him. He laid back on the bed and let out a quiet yawn, causing Logan to look up from his laptop. “Just.. resting my eyes,” Scott answered to the eyes staring at him. Logan rolled his eyes, “Sure bub.” Despite Scott’s claim he did end up falling asleep anyway.

Rain poured down hard, hitting Scott coldly. He heard a voice calling out, it was Logan leaning on a car. “Are you coming?” The man said it so casually, like he knew Scott was going to follow. Scott looked behind him, the courthouse. His job, his coworkers, his routine, and certainty. Before he could make his decision he found himself in Logan’s office. He was just sitting there, not as a rival but as a partner. Logan broke Scott’s stare, “Are you just going to sit there and stare or are you going to start helping?” there was no heat behind it. Scott got comfortable and began flipping through files. He felt at peace, it was like he finally had what his heart desired.

All of the sudden he smelt warm coffee. The morning sunlight broke him out of his deep sleep. It wasn’t the worst alarm clock in his opinion. He slowly opened his eyes to find himself out of his hotel room. As he took in his surroundings he pieced together two things, he’s still in Logan’s hotel room and he’s in Logan’s bed. The realization made his stomach drop. “Did we..? No. Surely not,” Scott thought. He was a bit embarrassed that his mind went there.

Scott slowly began to sit up, noticing Logan leaning on the small hotel room kitchen counter drinking coffee. It was like Logan could sense Scott’s confusion. “Good morning sunshine.” Logan grinned. “We didn’t–?” Scott quickly cut himself off, embarrassed. “What, share the bed? Relax Boy Scout. I took the chair,” Logan gave him a mock bow, “Gentleman's honor.” Scott felt guilty that he took Logan’s bed. He pushed that feeling down and quickly got out of bed, heading to the door.

“Don’t worry Scotty, I won’t tell anyone you slept in my bed.” Logan joked. “We’re not talking about this again.” Scott stated, extremely flustered at the nickname but still embarrassed about the situation. “Hey Scott,” Logan called out. Scott gave a defeated sigh–preparing himself for Logan’s teasing, “What?” He saw the smirk appear on his face, “Your bedhead is adorable.” Scott could feel his face turning red. He quickly left, hearing Logan chuckle under his breath.

Scott was adamant about not being seen in the hall coming from Logan’s room and now his beadhead. Didn’t want anyone getting the wrong ideas.

Thank you to anyone who has stuck this through. I haven't written anything lengthy in years, so I'm still not the best at pacing (and my writing skills can improve as well) but I hope any future projects will let me work on that. :)

Song: Forever - KISS

There wasn’t a word for how the morning started. He didn’t exactly hate it, but it was not the easiest. If he was being completely honest with himself, he was definitely not upset about waking up in Logan’s bed. He had to be logical, but he ended up letting embarrassment take the lead. Now remembering his words of “I’m just tired”, it reminded him to finish up the previous work. The task was shortly started after he changed his clothes, brushed his teeth, and fixed his ‘bedhead’. He was mad Logan was right, but he was bashful that Logan saw it too.

As he sat down he heard a familiar knock on the door. That stupid knock Scott found himself waiting for. He didn’t want to be lovestruck over Logan’s flirting this time. “You just couldn’t get enough of me could you?” Scott said confidently as he opened the door. Logan chuckled, “You didn’t think I’d let you do all this by yourself, did you?” Scott gave him a short smile before reality hit him. How bad it was going to be if someone saw Logan standing outside his hotel room. Yes, they have been in each other's room but that was always planned. “What are you doing? This is my space,” Scott asked with more worry. The man in front of him rolled his eyes playfully, “This is a collaborative effort now, remember? Also I don’t remember this whole ‘your space my space’ thing when you slept in my bed.” Scott sighed, ultimately defeated. He let Logan in and quickly closed the door behind him.

“Also I found your note in one of my files from yesterday’s session, you’re a terrible liar Summers.” Logan commented as he found his seat. “Well we’re not supposed to be working together, so I have to do what I have to do.” Scott replied, smiling. He previously left an ‘anonymous’ note for Logan–wanting to make this whole situation light-hearted.

It only took the men a few minutes to get back into their comfortable work flow they’ve discovered. “Hey check the timeline for me again, if what I’m putting together is correct, then you have the win.” Scott explained. “Before you add anymore evidence, they’re going to crumble on this. Stryker’s timeline is so vague.” Logan added on, proudly. “You’re assuming the jury is going to pick up on that.” Scott retorted. “I don’t assume, I make them see it. It’s what I do best.” Logan self-assuredly debated. “You’re awfully confident.” Scott rolled his eyes playfully. “And you like that about me,” Logan flirted in response.

It took a moment to properly get back to normal. Logan grinning the entire time. “Anyways, Stryker’s timeline is inaccurate–we’ve established that. Going back to Eloise, both Wade and Eloise both said they were on the phone. We can ask her if she for some reason recorded the call or had someone else with her.” Scott theorized. “I see what you're saying,” the other man’s tone returned to a more serious tone. “Another thing, you mentioned how you and many friends were wronged by Stryker. Is there anyone who worked with you and Wade that’d be able to defend him?” Scott asked. Logan paused for a moment before he answered, it was like a lightbulb went off in his head. “Fred Dukes. Why didn’t I include him? He worked with both of us. He hated Stryker’s guts. He was also close with John.”

Scott saw a small hint of sadness at the mention of John’s name. It finally hit him how important this case was to Logan. He was defending his friend and trying to avenge another one. Him going against Stryker, the man who caused him so much pain was also taking a toll on him.

Logan once again broke Scott’s train of thought, “I think we should return to the forged clock out time theory. It seems highly likely for that to be the case.” Scott nodded his head, “I can get Emma to run by and take a look. She’s more willing to do things for me than Xavier and Lehnsherr.”

It was getting close to the time when they had to split. There were so many words unsaid. “Hey, about last night…” Logan began. “No need to make it a thing.” Scott quickly added. So many thoughts raced through his head. Did he not like it? Did his feelings change? Logan must have seen the distress on his face. “I wasn’t. I was just going to say… you’re easier to work with than I thought.” Logan returned. Scott let out a small breath he was holding. He was slightly flustered as they both broke into quiet laughter. “In all seriousness, I didn’t regret it. I enjoyed it. It was something I needed for a while, no matter how much I denied it.” Logan continued. Before Scott could get a response out it was time to head to the courtroom.

On his way there, he saw what he assumed to be Fred Dukes. Logan’s ways still surprised him–who is able to get a witness that quickly? He got a notification on his phone which ended up being from Emma. “Turns out the clock out time and security camera footage were forged. Based on the fact you asked me to do this I’m assuming you don’t want me to tell Charles and his boyfriend.” Scott quickly relayed the clock out time fraud to Logan. He at least already found the footage was forged on his own a few days ago. He texted Emma back a brief thank you. As he did he chuckled over the ‘Charles' boyfriend’ comment. It had been a running joke between him and his colleagues, though they never denied it.

Everyone got in their seats. Majority really wanted this to end. Especially Scott’s side since it was obvious they were wrong. Logan began going all out on his argument for the forged clock out time and security footage. Which went over well for him. During this whole thing he purposely avoided any eye contact with Stryker. He was also grateful that giving cross-examinations weren’t common during this phase. “I could go after that point and destroy his argument. But the truth needs to come out.” he thought at one point. Recently, his second-guessing had calmed down. Doesn't mean it wasn’t gone entirely.

As the session went on, it became more entertaining. Eloise Phimster did record the call. Her words were, “I wanted to show Nessa Wade’s silly plan when he finally proposed. I mean, he got lost while on call–that’s pure gold.” Then Fred Dukes came, his testimony was utterly depressing. He shared how Stryker had basically mental NDA’s, torture, and even murder. He explained how mentally abused he’s been has affected him physically. Fred didn’t know why John stayed or why Wade is still around.

Scott guessed that it was for the honorable discharge based on what Stryker had said. It must have clicked to Stryker when Scott did little to defend him after that. Scott could feel the anger rising next to him.

The jury came to a verdict, Wade W. Winston is innocent. Scott tried his best to hide the smile he had. He lingered around the courtroom as everyone was released. Logan did the same thing, finding Scott’s eyes. “You were good in there today.” Scott said, barely over a whisper. Logan smiled, “You weren’t so bad yourself Summers.” Once Scott stepped out of the courtroom, he quickly rushed out as professionally as he could. Trying to avoid the wrath of Stryker.

Logan found Scott after a few minutes. “Hey Scott, I just want to say thank you for helping me with this case. I know that this most likely won’t look good on your record but if it ever goes south… you can always come work with me.” Logan’s voice lowered as he finished talking. A blush spread across Scott’s face, and he was about to respond but Charles interrupted him. “Scott, can I speak with you, alone?” Scott turned his head, “Of course Mr. Xavier–I mean Charles.” Scott gave Logan a ‘be right back’ glance and quickly followed Charles.

Charles began, “Look, Scott. I know what you did. You were very discreet about it but I noticed you and Mr. Howlett. You are one of my best attorneys, but I can’t have this behavior present in one of my attorneys. Also, from what I’ve seen it’s not exactly casual between the two of you.” He was slightly embarrassed that that part of their relationship was obvious.

“Are you firing me?” Charles shook his head, “No. But, I think you know what you have to do. I want you to thrive, Scott. When I saw you for the first time after you finished law school I knew you could do great things. This case–I understand how unethical our side of the case was. If being a state attorney doesn’t suit you, I don’t want to hold you back.” Scott started getting emotional, he’s been working for Charles his whole career. “Are you saying I should resign..?” the words he barely let out of his mouth. “It’d look better for your reputation. I know that might not be your top priority anymore but I know it can be. If someone questions it I’ll have Jean and Emma work on covering it up.” Charles explained. “Thank you, Charles.” Scott said with one last smile.

Charles gave him a heartfelt smile as they went their separate ways. Scott found his way back to Logan, still waiting on him. “So I might take you up on that offer.” Scott said lightheartedly. Logan gave him a genuine smile in return, something Scott only truly saw after they kissed. “It’s crazy how I have Scott Summers working with me all because I kissed him. If I knew that I would have done that ages ago.” Logan joked. “Shut up,” said the same way he did after they kissed for the first time.

It had been almost a year since Scott joined Logan’s firm. Everything felt very… domesticated . Something he yearned for deep down. “How's it going Scotty?” Logan asked as he kissed his head. Scott gave a mushy smile, “Great, you?” Logan placed his hand firmly on Scott’s shoulder, “Good now that I get to talk to you.” Scott chuckled, working in civil law is another thing he didn’t know he wanted. Their conversation was fairly short since they were both busy. “Hey, did Ororo bring her brownies? If she did, tell her I love her,” Scott called out. “Yes and will do” Logan called back. Scott leaned back in his chair, he finally felt at home.

Chapter Text

Song: The Bad Touch - Bloodhound gang

Logan and Wade met up 2 days before the trial started. Logan had done a couple of murder cases, but Wade’s situation is tough. It can be tough. It’s all a mindset, one Logan has made sure he’s stayed on the brighter side of things.

A burger joint isn’t the best thing to discuss serious matters, but when was Wade ever serious? “This case isn’t going to be all sunshine and rainbows Wade, you know that right?” Logan began. Despite the setting he tried and remained professional. “Of course I know that honey badger,” Wade replied. “Wade.”

Logan glared at him hoping he’d be serious. But this was Wade he was working with. “Sorry sorry, the nickname just slipped out.” Wade grinned. Logan jokingly rolled his eyes, Wade had been calling him that ever since they had a thing back when Logan was still in the army with him. “I’m honestly surprised you stuck around in that unit for so long.” Logan continued. Wade sighed, “This year makes what… 17 years? If I had the balls to quit after 10 years and become a well-known attorney, I would.”

“I believe you could’ve successfully quit after 10 years, maybe not the attorney part per say.” Logan commented. They both shared laughter before returning to the conversation. “I just want to get an honorable discharge, and you know–not getting framed and going to prison.” Wade added on. “You will. Plus you’d never kill John. Maybe a person but John? No.” Logan played.

They laughed again, the weight of the case being lifted off their shoulders for a moment. Logan sighed, “I’m confident in winning the case, it’s Summers I’m worried about.” Wade raised his eyebrows, “Ooo has Logan finally met his match?” he teased. Logan rolled his eyes, “You’re the defendant here I wouldn’t be teasing.” Wade ignored his eye roll. “You could always sleep with him,” he said so nonchalantly, as if it was casual. Logan could feel his face turn a shade of pink, embarrassed as hell. Wade noticed–of course he did, “Or just kiss him on the cheek. I know it when I see it with you Logan.” Logan stared him down before leaving.

“Go fuck yourself,” Logan said, with no heat behind it. As he started to walk away Wade called out to him.

“You know, you and Summers kind of remind me of these two X-Men characters. Their names were Wolverine and Cyclops.” Logan’s face took on a confused look. “I’m not getting involved in your shenanigans, I know what I’m doing.” Wade shrugged his shoulders, watching Logan as he left.
