Finally found you

Summary:

The figure in white tries to come out from behind the other, eyes wide and gets stopped as well. He gently pushes the hand aside and takes a step forward, “Excuse me… what is your name?” He asks, a hint of disbelief in his voice.

“Hua Ying! It’s Hua Ying.”

“A-Ying? Is that really you?” He asks, reaching forward.

Or Wei Wuxian is the child of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian and finally reunites with them after being seperated yet again

Notes:

I wrote this as a single piece but it turned out way longer than expected so I'm splitting it into chapters. It was originally supposed to be around 6000 words then it ended up double that. Whoops? I hope you enjoy.

Chapter 1: The reunion

Chapter Text

Jin Ling leads their group on the night hunt with the updated Compass of Ill Winds, Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi following close behind, “Hey! I thought you said this version was supposed to tell us what type it’s leading us to!” He yells.

Wei Wuxian looks over from where he’s trailing behind with Lan Wangji, “It is. You’re probably just not using it properly.”

“He is using it correctly. It just isn't showing us the type. I’m not sure why.” Lan Sizhui says, all three of them had checked when the type determination first stopped working.

Wei Wuxian frowns at that and shares a look with Lan Wangji. They catch up and Wei Wuxian takes the compass from Jin Ling to check it. He flips it over to check that all the pieces are still working properly and once he determines that they are he checks it again. Lan Wangji looks over his shoulder at the compass, meeting his eyes when he looks back.

“You kids stay behind Lan Zhan. We’re taking the lead now.” He says firmly, moving in front of them with Lan Wangji beside him, Bichen ready to be sent out if necessary.

“Wei-qianbei… why wouldn’t the compass be working?” Lan Sizhui asks cautiously, doing as they were told and staying behind Lan Wangji.

“Preferably? The prey is very rare and I just haven’t had a chance to add it as a type yet.” He says, his eyes darting around as he looks out for the prey.

“P-Preferably? Then what’s the other option?” Lan Jingyi asks, hiding behind Lan Sizhui as he looks around frantically, starting to get scared.

Lan Wangji glances at Wei Wuxian briefly, “Or it’s evil qi is too strong for the compass to handle right now. If that is the case, Lan Zhan and I will handle it. You three will return to the Cloud Recesses.” Wei Wuxian says firmly, looking back at them to give Jin Ling a pointed look, stopping him just as he was about to argue. He huffs and looks away, crossing his arms.

Wei Wuxian turns back and continues to follow the direction of the compass, eventually they begin to hear footsteps through the trees. He stops immediately and directs the teens to hide as he pulls out Chenqing. He catches sight of red and white robes through the trees, followed by a soft voice.

“San Lang, the citizens really said he was here? They’re sure?”

“Yes Gege, I made all the citizens memorise everything about him… this is the only lead.” Another voice says.

Wei Wuxian’s eyes widen hearing them and he drops Chenqing. Lan Wangji reaches forward to check on him, just barely missing him as he takes off running toward the figures. He drops the compass to the floor as he goes. Lan Wangji’s eyes widen slightly in shock and he takes off after him soundlessly.
The figure in red senses them coming and turns, the scimitar at his hip opening its eye and flying out of its sheath to prevent any attack. Lan Wangji sends out Bichen to block the scimitar from attacking, the blades sparking as they clash. Both pairs now finally fully visible to one another as they stand on opposite sides of the weapons.

The man in red with an eye patch over one eye stands protectively in front of the other, appearing to be a rogue cultivator. Lan Wangji does the same for Wei Wuxian, blocking him almost completely from view. The juniors run over, Lan Sizhui had picked up the compass and Jin Ling brought Chenqing, leading the group.

“Jin Ling! We’re supposed to go back!” Lan Sizhui whispers, trying to stop him as Lan Jingyi follows.

“Then go back! This is experience! What was the point otherwise!” He yells back, about to continue when he finds his lips stuck together.

They stop behind them and Wei Wuxian takes the chance to try and slip past Lan Wangji and approach. Lan Wangji catches him with one arm before he can pass him, holding him back.

“Lan Zhan, let me go.” He whispers, looking up at him seriously.

Lan Wangji glances at the swords still fighting, “Wei Ying…” He whispers, concern in his eyes visible only to Wei Wuxian.

The figure in white tries to come out from behind the other, eyes wide and gets stopped as well. He gently pushes the hand aside and takes a step forward, “Excuse me… what is your name?” He asks, a hint of disbelief in his voice.

Lan Wangji instantly pushes Wei Wuxian behind him, watching the man. Lan Sizhui steps forward slightly before he can answer, still behind Lan Wangji.

“Why do you ask Daozhang? It would be careless to reveal such information in front of a man with such strong evil qi.” He says, the compass pointing directly at the man in red.

Wei Wuxian groans, “Let me speak for myself. I’m your senior.” He says and jumps on Lan Wangji, trying to climb over him, “Hua Ying! It’s Hua Ying.” He says as he’s pulled back down by Lan Wangji.

“Huh? But that’s not his name.” Lan Jingyi whispers to his friends.

The scimitar falters and the man in red instantly approaches, joining his partner who looks like he’s about to cry, “A-Ying? Is that really you?” He asks, reaching forward.

Lan Wangji looks back at Wei Wuxian, “Please Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian whispers and finally Lan Wangji allows him to pass.

He takes off running and launches himself at them, hugging the pair tightly, “It’s me Baba.” He whispers.

At that the scimitar retreats back to its sheath and the man in white begins to cry. The other pulls them closer, “You look different.” He says quietly, placing a hand gently on Wei Wuxian’s head.

Wei Wuxian laughs and looks up at him, “It’s a long story.”

Lan Wangji steps forward, Bichen back in its sheath, “Wei Ying.” The juniors look at the sight with clear shock written on their faces.

“Did you just call him Baba?!” Lan Jingyi shouts, “He’s even younger than you!”

The man in red turns as he’s reminded of their presence and glares at the group, his hand going to the scimitar. Wei Wuxian steps forward, stopping him, “Yes I did. Meet my Baba and A-die.” He says, gesturing to the two men. He then returns to Lan Wangji, holding his hand, “A-die, Baba, this is my husband, Lan Zhan. Then there's A-Yuan, Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi.” He says, pointing to each in turn.

The man in white bows, “It’s lovely to meet you all. My name is Xie Lian. I do apologise for the way we met. San Lang never would have attacked if we knew who it was.”

San Lang frowns, “Gege…” He whispers and gently wipes away any stray tears from Xie Lian’s cheeks.

He laughs softly, “I’m fine San Lang, just happy.” He says with a small smile, holding onto his arms.

Lan Sizhui steps forward, “Wei-qianbei… the compass still isn't working properly but… it’s pointing at your a-die…” He whispers, showing it to him.

He laughs and takes it, tucking it into the folds of his robe, “Yeah it’s going to stay that way. It turns out it was both options.” He grins, “A-die is a ghost king.”

“A ghost king? Like-Like what Lan xiansheng taught us?” Lan Jingyi asks, eyes blown wide.

“Yup!’ He laughs, “A-die is the ‘Crimson Rain Sought Flower’ Hua Cheng. You’d never guess he’s supposed to be scary when looking at him.” Wei Wuxian grins, nodding over at them where Hua Cheng is still fussing over Xie Lian.

“Wei Ying… your parents.” Lan Wangji says quietly, his brows furrowed slightly as he looks between his husband and the two men.

He laughs and rubs the back of his neck, “Aha Lan Zhan… why don’t we all go back to the Cloud Recesses? We can explain everything there. It’s complicated.” He says sheepishly.

He looks between them again and nods, “Mn… xiongzhang will also want to know.”
“Oh! Right, that makes sense. Do we need Zewu-jun’s permission to let them in?”

“I can allow them in.” He says quietly, “But for them to stay xiongzhang should approve.”

Wei Wuxian grins, “Thank you Lan Zhan!” He says and jumps up, wrapping his arms around his neck and leans in for a kiss. Lan Wangji closes the gap, wrapping his arms around his waist.

Hua Cheng finally stops fussing after much insistence by his husband and turns back, wrapping his arm around Xie Lian’s waist. He sees them and his eye darkens, narrowing as he glares at the man holding his son. Xie Lian sees them and quickly looks away, turning to the juniors.

“So you three are friends of A-Ying?” He asks, trying to divert Hua Cheng’s attention as well.

“It’s a bit more complicated than that.” Lan Sizhui says awkwardly, glad for the distraction.

“Oh? I apologise for assuming.” Xie Lian says, “May I ask about your relationship?” He asks, head tilted curiously.

“Well, I am their son.” He says, glancing at them.

“You are? So you’re the child A-Ying spoke about from the burial mounds?” Xie Lian gasps, “I was under the impression you had died…” He says quieter and glances at Hua Cheng.

“As was I. A-Ying had me looking for his ghost.” He responds with a nod, his attention finally moving from the couple’s developing make-out session.

“He told you about me?”

“Yes. He was heartbroken. How did you survive? From what we heard everyone was killed…” Xie Lian asks.

“I was hidden… Hanguang-jun found me and raised me in the Lan sect.” He explains.

“Hanguang-jun?” Xie Lian looks at him, brows furrowed at the name, “Who is that?”

“Oh! Sorry it’s….” He trails off and gestures over to Lan Wangji, looking away quickly.

“Ah! I see.” Xie Lian says, quickly looking away, “And the rest of you?”

“They’re my teachers.” Lan Jingyi replies.

Hua Cheng narrows his eyes at Jin Ling, “You haven’t said anything this entire time. Why?”

Lan Jingyi fails to hold back his laughter as he notices the tell-tale signs of Jin Ling’s temper rising.

“Hanguang-jun silenced him. He cannot speak at the moment.” Sizhui explains, “He is Wei-qianbei’s nephew. Leader of the Jin sect.”

Hua Cheng laughs, “Now that’s a trick I need to learn.”

Xie Lian lightly smacks his arm, “San Lang! Don’t be mean.”

“Sorry Gege but you have to admit that would be fun.” He grins.

“I… suppose it may be useful.” Xie Lian admits.

Hua Cheng grins and leans down, lifting his Xie Lian’s hand and pressing a kiss to it, “Can gege forgive me?” Xie Lian blushes and looks away earning another laugh from his husband.

“I understand where they get it from now.” Lan Jingyi whispers, “If Wei-qianbei grew up with his parents being like that there’s no wonder he has no problem being in public.”

“Jingyi!” Sizhui turns to him, “You can’t say that!” He admonishes.

Wei Wuxian’s laugh breaks them all out of their individual conversations, drawing their attention. The couple finally as separated from one another as they’ll get. Lan Wangji keeping his arm wrapped around Wei Wuxian.

“Come on, let's go! What are you all waiting for?” Wei Wuxian laughs and leads the way with his husband, knowing full well it’s their fault they haven’t left yet.

Xie Lian follows, trailing behind with Hua Cheng, “I can’t believe we finally found him.” He whispers.

Hua Cheng pulls him close as they walk and nods, “And he seems to have the resentful energy under control this time.”

“I’m glad. Thank you for helping him, San Lang. I was so afraid we would be too late again. I’m not sure I could handle seeing him like that a second time… it was awful.”

“I know gege. But he can handle it now. Besides, it appears he has found someone to keep him sane.” He says, glaring at Lan Wangji.

“Now now San Lang. He seems like a lovely man and A-Ying obviously likes him.” Xie Lian laughs.

Hua Cheng scoffs but doesn’t say any more on the topic.

Chapter 2: Arriving at the Cloud Recesses

Summary:

The group arrive at the Cloud Recesses and find Jiang Cheng.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

They arrive at the entrance to the Cloud Recesses to see Jiang Cheng arguing with the disciple assigned to keep an eye on the entrance this week. Wei Wuxian laughs at the sight and speeds up slightly.

“Did you forget your jade token again A-Cheng?” He grins more as Zidian sparks on Jiang Cheng’s finger.

“Wei Wuxian!” He yells angrily, “Who said you can call me that? Piss off!”

Wei Wuxian laughs harder as they come to a stop at the entrance. Jin Ling steps forward, going to his uncle, his lips finally freed as he greets him, “Jiujiu. Are you here to see Lan zongzhu again?”

He crosses his arms, “Why else would I come here? For bland soup?” He scoffs, “Why are you here? Don’t you have a sect to run?”

“We were on a night hunt. I’m returning to Lanling tomorrow afternoon. Don’t you have a sect to run?” He retorts, crossing his arms.

“Oh! That A-Cheng!” Xie Lian whispers, finally placing the man and earning a chuckle from his husband.

JIang Cheng shoots a brief glare at the voice. He goes to respond to his nephew but pauses and turns properly toward the group, narrowing his eyes as he assesses the new additions.

“I know you… where?” He trails off, trying to figure them out.

“Lotus Pier. 25 years ago. Burial Mounds. 15 years ago.” Hua Cheng says casually.

Jiang Cheng’s eyes widen, “You! You were the ones always hanging around Wei Wuxian anytime you showed up!” He looks between them, “You still look exactly the same… immortals?” He glances at Wei Wuxian.

He grins, “A-Cheng you remember! They’re my parents!”

Jiang Cheng looks at him, determining if he’s lying to him. Upon deciding he wasn’t he looks back at the couple. Xie Lian smiles sheepishly and waves whereas Hua Cheng remains unaffected.

Wei Wuxian looks up at Lan Wangji, “Lan Zhan, A-Cheng can come in right? We have to go talk to Zewu-jun anyway, we can bring him with us. A present for him, a peace offering.” He grins. Jiang Cheng’s eye twitches at the name but he stays silent knowing that they’re his only way in since he forgot his jade token when he left last time he visited.

Lan Wangji glances at Jiang Cheng coldly but nods, “Mn. Xiongzhang will be happy.” He takes Wei Wuxian’s hand and walks in, nodding to the disciple. He steps aside, allowing the group in. Jiang Cheng starts walking ahead of them but Wei Wuxian catches him with a grin.

“Uh uh uh. You’re our present for Zewu-jun. You can’t get there before us or it doesn’t count.”

“Fuck off.” Jiang Cheng growls, throwing his hand off him.

“But A-Cheng, it’s only because of us that you’re able to see him. It’s the least you can do don’t you think?” He teases.

Jin Ling moves to him, “He has a point jiujiu. Just give up.” Jiang Cheng glares at them both but doesn’t say anything, keeping pace with them though impatiently.

The group move through the Cloud Recesses quietly as it nears hai time and people start getting ready for bed. The juniors stop near their rooms and bow with exception of Jin Ling who as a Sect Leader does not have to bow.

“We will take our leave. Thank you Hanguang-jun, Wei-qianbei.” Lan Sizhui says.

Jin Ling huffs, “You don’t need us to see Lan zongzhu. I have already seen him today so you can go yourselves.”

Wei Wuxian laughs, “That’s okay. We’ll take all the credit for bringing A-Cheng.”

Jiang Cheng’s eye twitches again, “Who brought me? I’m the one who flew all the way here.” He growls.

Xie Lian watches the exchange curiously, trying to work out if his hypothesis is correct regarding Jiang Cheng’s relationship with this Zewu-jun.

The group continues along, now smaller as they approach the hanshi. Lan Wangji steps forward and knocks on the door, an impatient Jiang Cheng kept between the couples.

“Come in.” Calls a voice from inside. Lan Wangji slides the door open and steps in with his husband, both bowing respectfully.

“Xiongzhang.” Lan Wangji greets. Lan Xichen looks up at him from the low table in the center of his room, eyes widened slightly.

“Wangji. Wei-gongzi. I wasn’t expecting you.”

Wei Wuxian grins, “Apologies Zewu-jun. We need to speak with you. We brought a gift with us to make up for disturbing you so late.” He steps aside with Lan Wangji, revealing Jiang Cheng behind them.

Lan Xichen’s eyes widen seeing him. Once his initial surprise has passed he lifts his sleeve to hide his mouth as he chuckles softly. His eyes crinkle as he smiles up at him.

“Hello Jiang zongzhu.”

His scowl softens as he looks at him, “Lan zongzhu. I would have been here earlier but I believe you have my jade token.”

“Indeed I do. You really should take better care of it.” He says and reaches into his sleeve, pulling out the small token and sliding it across the table.

Jiang Cheng approaches and takes it, putting it into his qiankun pouch, “So you’ve said.”

Wei Wuxian grins, “So do you like your gift?”

Lan Xichen turns his attention back to him with a smile, “I do. Thank you Wei-gongzi.” He glances at the men standing in the doorway, “I take it you wished to speak with me about them.” He asks.

“Sorry for the intrusion.” Xie Lian says, bowing.

Lan Xichen nods in acknowledgement and turns to look at his brother, “Wangji?”

Jiang Cheng sits down at the table with Lan Xichen, mostly blocking out the others.

“Xiongzhang. These are Wei Ying’s parents. He’s requested for them to stay for a little while.” He explains briefly.

Lan Xichen glances between them, “Though I do see the resemblance I was under the impression Wei-gongzi’s parents had passed? And this man seems to have a lot of evil qi.”

“Ah- I can explain that. A-Ying was staying with friends of ours for some time. They are the ones who passed. About San Lang’s evil qi, it is true but I assure you he will not cause any harm.” Xie Lian says. Hua Cheng remains silent, arms crossed and eyes narrowed as he watches the exchange.

“I promise I will explain everything Zewu-jun.” Wei Wuxian says, stepping forward, “They won’t cause any trouble.”

“Very well. I expect a detailed explanation. As I am sure you are aware there is much about this that is suspicious. They may stay the night in one of the guest rooms. We will meet tomorrow during mao time. If I am unsatisfied with your explanation they will leave immediately.”

“Thank you Zewu-jun” Wei Wuxian smiles brightly, bowing.

“Thank you for your hospitality.” Xie Lian says, bowing again despite Hua Cheng’s frown.

“You’ve spoken, now get out.” Jiang Cheng says with a glare.

Wei Wuxian just laughs as he heads to the door, “Have fun you two.”

Lan Wangji nods, “Xiongzhang.” He turns and follows his husband out.

Jiang Cheng glares after them, waiting until the door closes before sighing and allowing the tension in his shoulders to relax.

Lan Xichen smiles amusedly at him, “Lao tou zi. I wasn’t sure you were coming.”

Jiang Cheng glares at him, “I’m not that old. You’re older than me.” He looks away, picking up the tea pot and pours them each some, “Your disciple wouldn’t let me in. He’s lucky they came along before I took out Sandu.” He grumbles.

“Hm, I suppose he is lucky then, bao bei.” He smiles, a teasing glint in his eye.

~~

Lan Wangji leads them to one of the guest rooms, stopping outside. Wei Wuxian hugs his parents before stepping back, “You can stay here tonight. We’ll come fetch you at Mao time to go speak with Zewu-jun.”

Xie Lian smiles, “Thank you A-Ying. I’m really glad we found you.”

“Me too. I’ve missed you.” He smiles.

“See you in the morning, A-Ying.” Hua Cheng says and looks at Lan Wangji, his eyes hardening, “You’d best have not hurt him.”

Xie Lian chuckles and tugs gently on his sleeve, “Come San Lang. Let’s go to sleep.”

Hua Cheng turns to him, softening instantly, “Of course gege.” He says and slides the door open, guiding him in and shooting one last glare at Lan Wangji before closing it.

“He does not like me.” Lan Wangji says quietly as they go to the jingshi.

Wei Wuxian laughs, “He’s protective, that's all. Don’t worry I’ll protect you Hanguang-jun.” He grins teasingly.

Lan Wangji pulls him closer as they approach their destination, “Mn. Wei Ying will.”

Wei Wuxian laughs as they enter, pulling him down to the bed as soon as the door is closed, “Just like Lan Zhan does.” He whispers as Lan Wangji leans over him.

~~

Xie Lian sits down on the edge of the bed, taking off his boots, “A-Ying seems happy here.”

Hua Cheng begins removing his jewellery with a frown, “He does.”

“So why are you upset?” Xie Lian asks gently as he sets them aside.

“These are the same people that hurt him before.” He says coldly.

Xie Lian smiles softly and walks over, stilling Hua Cheng’s hands, “I see. You’re worried for him. That he’ll get hurt again.”

“Of course I am. They abandoned him. Left him so the resentful energy could consume him.” He says, glaring at the door.

“I understand. I worry too. But San Lang, we have to respect his decisions. If A-Ying trusts them, and is giving them another chance, we have to let him. We cannot choose for him.” Xie Lian whispers, reaching up to cup his cheek.

Hua Cheng leans into it, “That doesn’t mean that I have to trust them.”

“No it doesn’t. You do have to trust A-Ying though. We will still look out for him. That doesn’t have to change.”

He frowns at him, “But gege-”

“Give them a chance, San Lang.” He smiles.

He analyses his face before sighing softly, “Fine.”

“Thank you.” He smiles and leans up, kissing him softly.

Hua Cheng kisses back instantly, his hands resting gently on his waist. Xie Lian pulls back and steps away with a smile, He removes his outer robe and takes the ribbon out of his hair.

“Now come to bed, San Lang.” He says, folding his clothes and setting them aside as he goes to the bed.

He perks up and quickly undresses for bed, taking no time at all to join him. He pulls him close and smiles, a glint in his eye. Xie Lian blushes as he’s pulled close and taps his chest.

“Not tonight San Lang. We’re guests in someone else’s home.” He looks away, feeling his husband’s pout as he kisses his head.

“If gege insists this one will wait.” He sighs dramatically.

He blushes as he looks up at him, “Poor San Lang. This one does insist.” He kisses his cheek.

Hua Cheng smiles and pulls him closer, running his fingers gently through his hair, “As long as gege stays here this San Lang will survive.”

Xie Lian smiles and lays his head against his chest, “Good.”

Notes:

I didn't originally want the chapter to be this short but I wanted the explanation all in one chapter so the next one should be longer.

Chapter 3: Xie Lian explains everything

Summary:

They sit down and talk.

Notes:

I did say it would be a long one. Well in comparison to the other two.

Chapter Text

Mao time comes around and Lan Wangji wakes up, his husband sleeping on his chest as usual, still deep in his slumber. He slides out from under him and gets dressed before returning. He gently shakes him awake, tugging the blanket down and rolling him over.

“Wei Ying. It’s mao time. We need to meet xiongzhang.” He says.

Wei Wuxian whines and curls back up, “Mm… go without me. He's your xiongzhang.” He mumbles sleepily.

“Wei Ying. It has to be you. Your parents are here.”

He blinks sleepily, “Lan Zhan… it’s still sleep time.”

“Not today. Xiongzhang will make them leave if you don’t come.”

He frowns, more awake, “Noo… I’ll lose them again.” He whines.

“Then you need to explain.” He says, his tone gentler as he helps him to sit up.

He pouts as he rubs his eyes, “Why so early? Jiang Cheng doesn’t wake up this early either.” He complains.

Lan Wangji gets him to stand and helps him to get dressed.

~~

Lan Xichen wakes up at Mao time and watches Jiang Cheng for a while, smiling softly. Jiang Cheng shifts, turning onto his side so he’s facing him.

“Creep.” He mumbles sleepily, not bothering to open his eyes.

“Am I not allowed to admire Wanyin? Even when he’s so pretty with his hair down and his face finally relaxed?” He smiles, reaching out to gently caress his cheek, “No scowl to be seen.”

Jiang Cheng scoffs and slowly opens his eyes, leaning into the touch, “It’s far too early to be getting up Xichen. Couldn’t you have told them chen time?” He grumbles.

He smiles apologetically, “No. You surely sensed that man’s qi. I need to know that my clan is safe. He’s too dangerous.”

He sighs softly and rests his head against Lan Xichen’s shoulder, “Yeah. I know.”

“I’ll make it up to you.”

“You better. I should still be asleep.” Jiang Cheng says and starts to sit up, clearly still half-asleep from the way it takes more effort than usual.

Lan Xichen sits up, helping him up, “You will get to sleep in as long as you like tomorrow morning. I promise.”

Jiang Cheng nods and yawns as he slides his feet off the side of the bed, “Damn right I will.”
~~

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian stop outside the guest room and Wei Wuxian knocks, leaning against Lan Wangji as he struggles to keep his eyes open.

Xie Lian smiles as he slides the door open, “Good morning.” He greets. He turns, “San Lang! It’s time to go. A-Ying is here.”

A thump is heard from inside followed by a curse before they see Hua Cheng at the door, “It is far too early. Who wakes up at this time?” He grumbles.

“The entire Lan clan.” Wei Wuxian yawns.

“I used to wake up at this time often. Villagers were never too happy to see me sleeping in whatever shaded spot I had found that night so I’d leave before they woke up.” Xie Lian says with a soft chuckle.

Hua Cheng looks at him, his eyes softening considerably, “Gege…” He reaches out to him.

He notices his expression and smiles sheepishly, “I did it again didn’t I? Sorry San Lang.”

Lan Wangji looks from them to Wei Wuxian, confused by the statement.

“Baba has lived a long hard life.” He mumbles sleepily, rubbing his eyes.

Lan Wangji nods and leads them to the hanshi again.

Hua Cheng rests his hand on the small of Xie Lian’s back, “Gege… you don’t have to apologise.” He says quietly as they follow.

“I upset San Lang. Of course I do.”

“No gege. You never have to apologise to me. If anyone has to apologise it’s those villagers.” His eyes darken at the thought.

Xie Lian chuckles, “No they don’t. Besides that was so many years ago. I don’t have to do that anymore.”

He softens instantly and smiles, “No. Gege can sleep as long as he likes now. He can have anything he wants.”

Xie Lian laughs, “I already have everything I want.” He smiles up at him.

Hua Cheng’s eyes widen, “Dianxia you…”

They arrive at the hanshi, stopping outside the door and Lan Wangji knocks. Wei Wuxian leans into him, yawning behind a hand.

“Come in.” Lan Xichen calls from inside.

Lan Wangji opens the door and the four enter, Xie Lian closing the door gently behind them. Lan Wangji guides Wei Wuxian to a pair of the prepared cushions. He sits down with him as Wei Wuxian does his best to stay in an upright position. Hua Cheng does the same with Xie Lian, picking up his pillow to give to Xie Lian as well, stopped by his gentle hand on his wrist. Jiang Cheng is already seated next to Lan Xichen drinking tea. His posture is not as straight as usual, betraying his tiredness whereas Lan Xichen looks just as perfect and put together as ever.

“I have requested Jiang zongzhu’s presence to assist in making a determination on whether or not it is safe to allow your continued presence in my sect.” Lan Xichen explains, ignoring Jiang Cheng’s rolled eyes at his claim of it being a request.

Xie Lian nods, “I appreciate you allowing us to stay this long despite understandable reservations.”

Lan Xichen glances at the barely awake Wei Wuxian before returning his gaze to Xie Lian, “As Wei-gongzi does not seem to be in a state to provide an explanation would you be willing?” He asks.

He shares a look with Hua Cheng, “If you are willing then I have no problems with it.” Hua Cheng says through their spiritual communication array.

Xie Lian nods and turns back to Lan Xichen, “I will explain. Though I am unsure where you would like me to begin.”

“The evil qi.” He says, his eyes drifting to Hua Cheng.

“A-Ah… well it’s quite simple as to why. It’s just that… I hope you can give him a chance?” Xie Lian says nervously.

Hua Cheng scoffs, “I am not losing A-Ying again. They will not make me.” He says with a glare.

“I apologise for San Lang’s behaviour.” Xie Lian sighs, “He is merely protective of A-Ying.”

Wei Wuxian mumbles something, leaning against Lan Wangji’s side, mostly asleep again. Xie Lian looks over with a soft smile before returning his focus.

“To answer your question San Lang is a ghost.”

Jiang Cheng lifts an eyebrow, “With qi that strong? He’d have to be a wrath at least.”

Xie Lian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“You’re not wrong. He is a supreme.”

Lan Xichen’s eyes widen, “That would make him a calamity. I was under the impression they were no longer active.”

“Well I suppose that’s still true in a way. San Lang only attacks when provoked. Usually no one dares.” Xie Lian explains.

“I have no need to. I found what I was looking for.”

Xie Lian smiles, blushing lightly, “Yes well. He is not going to cause trouble without reason. I promise you.” Xie Lian continues, his expression turning serious.

Lan Xichen hums, looking between the two, “You can assure his good behaviour?”

“Yes.” He responds instantly, “San Lang will not cause you any problems.”

Lan Xichen looks to Jiang Cheng for his opinion. Jiang Cheng keeps his narrowed gaze on Hua Cheng, taking in his appearance. Sitting back after a moment longer and crossing his arms.

“Crimson Rain Sought Flower. Hua Cheng.” He looks between them, “Legend claims he has no respect for authority and frequently caused trouble for the heavenly realm.”

Xie Lian sweat drops, “That was many years ago. He hasn’t done anything like that in at least a hundred years.”

Hua Cheng scoffs, “I would love for them to leave us alone. Especially those two bastards.” He growls.

“San Lang…” Xie Lian drops his head into his hands.

Lan Xichen’s eyes widen, “You get visited by Heavenly officials?”

Xie Lian lifts his head, “I… yes?” He says awkwardly, having not planned on mentioning his own position.

“Why?” Jiang Cheng asks firmly, turning his glare towards him.

“Well… I own a shrine.” He explains, avoiding meeting their eyes.

“You are partners with a ghost king but own a shrine?” Lan Xichen asks sceptically.

“Husband.” Hua Cheng corrects before grinning, “I have no problem with his shrine. I have a temple to the same god. The only one worthy of worshipping.”

“Oh? And who might this god be that earns such respect from a calamity?” Jiang Cheng asks.

Hua Cheng grins, happy for the opportunity to make them apologise for not showing sufficient respect to his husband.

“The prince of Xian Le. Xie Lian.”

Xie Lian drops his head back into his hands, “San Lang… that really wasn’t necessary.”

Hua Cheng smiles, “Of course it was. They should know of his greatness.” He leans his head against his hand, his smile growing as he sees Xie Lian’s blush peeking out.

Lan Wangji’s eyes widen slightly, a movement noticed only by his brother.

“Wangji? What is it?”

Lan Wangji shifts his gaze from his brother to the couple and back, clearly uncomfortable, “Xiongzhang…”

“Tell me.” Lan Xichen says, his smile dropping slightly with concern.

He meets his eyes, “He introduced himself yesterday as Xie Lian.” Lan Wangji says, glancing briefly at the man in question.

Lan Xichen’s eyes widen and he sits up straighter, “Wangji… what are you saying?”

“Exactly what you think.” Hua Cheng grins.

“You can’t seriously be implying that this daozhang is a god?” Jiang Cheng asks, disbelief written across his face.

Xie Lian sighs and lifts his head, “I apologise for not introducing myself properly. It is not typically something I speak of in the mortal realm. I am not meant to.” He says, looking over at Hua Cheng who shrugs.

“Technically you didn’t say anything. Neither did I. They figured it out themselves. You cannot be punished for that.” Hua Cheng responds, a grin developing.

“They’re not going to be happy that you found another loophole.”

“They can’t do anything about it.”

Lan Xichen stares at them with wide eyes before bowing respectfully, “So you are the ghost and god meant to be worshipped together. I always wondered why that was…”

Jiang Cheng grumbles but bows. Lan Wangji merely bows his head, unable to move lest Wei Wuxian slip from his shoulder.

“No no, please don’t. That’s really unnecessary. I’d really prefer you treat me as a simple daozhang.” Xie Lian says hurriedly.

“Gege.” Hua Cheng frowns, his entire aim having been for them to treat Xie Lian as the god he is.

“San Lang, you know I prefer it this way.” Hua Cheng sighs but relents.

“Gege is too humble.”

“So Wei Wuxian’s parents are a god and a ghost?” Jiang Cheng grumbles, “Of fucking course.”

Lan Xichen gently places a hand on his shoulder. Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes and returns to his tea. Jiang Cheng pauses after only taking a sip between the two.

“You said it was friends of yours that we believed to be his parents. So if you are his actual parents does that mean you found him as a baby?” He asks, putting down his tea.

Xie Lian blushes deeply and looks away whereas Hua Cheng laughs. Lan Wangji looks over at them, also curious.

“No. We didn’t find him.” Hua Cheng grins.

Jiang Cheng’s eyes widen, “You can not seriously be implying…”

Hua Cheng just grins at him. Lan Wangji looks down at his sleeping husband.

“That’s not possible.” Jiang Cheng argues.

Xie Lian blushes, hiding his face, “Is this really necessary?”

Hua Cheng raises his hands in surrender, “I’m just making sure they know he’s ours.”

Lan Xichen clears his throat, his ears a little red, “Daozhang is right. This is unnecessary. You received your answer Jiang zongzhu.”

Jiang Cheng nods, pulling his eyes away.

“How did Wei-gongzi end up with these friends of yours?” Lan Xichen asks, trying to get the conversation back on track.

Xie Lian coughs a bit into his hand and nods, “Right. Well things were getting more dangerous in both the heavenly and ghost realms. We needed to deal with it but could not allow for knowledge of A-Ying to spread in case he was targeted so we did the only thing we could think of. Hide him with an old friend of mine and their partner.”

He looks down and Hua Cheng gently takes a hold of his hand, squeezing it gently. Xie Lian gives him a sad smile.

“We took too long. Someone knew about him and managed to track him down. Qingxuan hid him and…” He sighs shakily.

“Blackwater distracted the attacker until Qingxuan returned. They were killed in the attack. It was said to be a night hunt gone wrong to hide the truth.” Hua Cheng finishes for him.

“I’m very sorry for your loss.” Lan Xichen says solemnly, his mind briefly drifting back to his sworn brothers.

“Wait wait. Black water? Isn’t that another calamity? Since when was he involved?” Jiang Cheng asks.

“One of his clones was who you know as Wei Changze.” Hua Cheng responds.

Xie Lian sighs softly, “His clone was Qingxuan’s partner.”

“So this Qingxuan, they were Changse-sanren?” Jiang Cheng asks.

“Yes, that is the alias they took on while looking after A-Ying.”

“So the story about Baoshan-sanren?”

“That’s… not all true.” Xie Lian says awkwardly, “They did live with immortals who weren’t meant to leave.”

Lan Xichen looks at him curiously, “But it wasn't Baoshan-sanren?”

“Baoshan-sanren… doesn’t exist.”

“But Qingxuan was not the only one to descend her mountain?” Lan Xichen comments.

“Yes. You are correct.” Xie Lian says, scratching his cheek and avoiding meeting their eyes, “However I stand by my statement.”

“Cover story.” Lan Wangji says.

Xie Lian jumps, having forgotten he was there, “A-Ah! Yes, it is a cover story.” He sighs softly, “You cannot tell anyone about this, preferably not about my identity either. Baoshan-sanren and the mountain is merely a story we made up for heavenly officials who have been banished or otherwise kicked out.”

“So… all of them were once heavenly officials?” Lan Xichen asks, “What about Xiao Xingchen? He returned.”

“Ah, we were very sad to hear of his and Song Zichen’s passing. Xiao Xingchen came to one of my shrines and requested assistance. I managed to convince them to agree to his request. He was a good man. He just… made some mistakes.” Xie Lian explains, smiling sadly.

Lan Xichen nods, pushing his shock to the back of his mind to deal with later, “I see, thank you.”

“Gege, carry on with the story. I want to get this over with.” Hua Cheng complains, glaring at Lan Wangji again.

Xie Lian smiles and pats his hand, “Yes, of course San Lang.” He thinks back for a moment to remember where he left off before continuing, “It took some time for us to finally sort out the problems and by then we’d lost A-Ying. That was the time where he was living in the streets until Jiang Fengmian took him in. After about 3 years was it?” A nod from Hua Cheng has him continuing, “3 years with him we finally found him again. However, by that time A-Ying had formed strong bonds with you and your sister.” He looks over at Jiang Cheng, “He asked to stay. He wanted to be with his siblings so we allowed him to stay. This way he could also train and develop his golden core the normal way. Allowing him to grow up in the mortal realm was better for him after all. It was meant to be safer.” Xie Lian whispers.

Hua Cheng glares at Jiang Cheng who was looking at Wei Wuxian with slightly widened eyes. Despite how complicated his relationship with his parents was he couldn’t imagine choosing to live with people that should have been strangers. Studying in Gusu hadn’t been a problem because it was for schooling and only for a year but Wei Wuxian had chosen to live in a home where he was treated the way he was by Jiang Cheng’s mother just because of him and Yanli when he could have been living with his actual parents that love him dearly. He just can’t understand it, he wasn’t worth that.

“We kept in touch, he’d tell us stories of his time at both the Jiang and Lan sects. Now that I think about it, that boy he was always talking about from the Lan clan, the rule follower. That was you, wasn’t it?” Xie Lian smiles, looking at Lan Wangji.

Lan Wangji’s ear lobes turn a little red and he looks away, “Mn.”

“We visited him when we could but it wasn’t often. Then… the war and massacre happened and we lost him again.” He says, looking down, “We managed to track him down again as he became more popular but never long enough to meet up with him. Until the burial mounds. We finally managed to catch him but he was already so badly affected by the resentful energy. San Lang did his best to teach him to control it but they didn’t have enough time and it consumed him.” He sighs shakily.

Hua Cheng squeezes his hand, “His body was destroyed but his soul found its way to Ghost City. I cultivated his soul to become a ghost and he remained in Ghost City with us. I taught him everything about resentful energy which was easier with him being a ghost himself. Then one day he randomly disappeared.” He growls at the end.

“We’re still not exactly sure what happened. We’ve been searching for him since then, everyone has been. Now his body is different? I’m glad he’s alive but to be honest I’d quite like to know what happened.” Xie Lian finishes.

“Ah, right I suppose you wouldn’t know. Mo-gongzi performed a sacrificial ritual in which he summoned Wei Wuxian’s soul. His own was destroyed and he gave Wei-gongzi his body in order to get revenge on his abusers.” Lan Xichen explains.

“I remember telling A-Ying about that ritual but it is meant to summon a vengeful ghost. A-Ying was not.” Hua Cheng says, narrowing his eyes sceptically.

“From what I’ve gathered he had specifically sought out Wei-gongzi’s soul.”

Xie Lian smiles, “So that’s what happened. I’m glad he was not summoned in order for his soul to be destroyed. I was starting to believe he might’ve been…” He says sadly.

“If they dared I would have killed them.” Hua Cheng growls.

Xie Lian looks up at him, “He wasn’t though. He was given a second life.” He smiles, “We don’t have to find out if his soul would have survived. He’s okay.”

Hua Cheng relaxes, smiling a little, “Yes. He was. And he’d better stay okay.” He says, shooting a glare at Lan Wangji.

“I won’t hurt Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji says firmly.

“Hua chengzhu I understand that you are trying to protect Wei-gongzi but so is my brother. Wangji has been trying to do so for a long time. He has gotten hurt doing so.” Lan Xichen says, his friendly smile gone.

“Xiongzhang.” Lan Wangji frowns.

“No Wangji. He needs to hear this.” Lan Xichen says firmly, returning his attention to Hua Cheng, “He has been protecting him from the start. When the cultivation world found out about him being back and all turned against him Wangji stayed by his side. Wei-gongzi has chosen him as his cultivation partner and husband. It would do good for you to accept that. Wangji would never harm him.”

Xie Lian listens with wide eyes before smiling brightly, “See San Lang? There’s nothing to be worried about. A-Ying knows what he’s doing.”

Hua Cheng softens and smiles at Xie Lian, “Gege was right. As always.”

“You exaggerate.” Xie Lian chuckles.

“Never. This one wouldn’t dare.”

Lan Xichen looks at them, blinking quietly at the sudden change in behaviour from Hua Cheng.

Wei Wuxian shifts, starting to wake up again. He opens his eyes and looks around sleepily.

“Wei Ying…” Lan Wangji whispers, helping him to sit up.

He rubs his eyes and looks around, noticing Lan Xichen’s surprised expression and follows his gaze, discovering his parents in their own little world.

“You’ll get used to it. They do that a lot.” He yawns.

“Look who’s talking.” Jiang Cheng scoffs.

Wei Wuxian grins, “I gotta take after them somehow. Besides, Lan Zhan doesn’t mind.” He turns to his husband for confirmation.

Lan Wangji’s ears turn red as he looks away, “Mn.”

Wei Wuxian laughs and leans over, wrapping his arms around his shoulders. Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes and turns his attention to Lan Xichen who was watching the couples with an amused smile.

“You need to make a decision.” He says quietly, waiting until Lan Xichen turns to him before continuing, “About whether you will allow them to stay. Do you believe your sect is safe with them here?”

Lan Xichen glances at the couple again, “They are both very powerful… they could be a threat if they chose to attack. However, that does not seem likely, their priorities appear to be each other and Wei-gongzi. If we don’t harm or threaten them I believe they will remain peaceful.”

Jiang Cheng nods, “That is true. It doesn’t seem likely. Are you willing to trust that? Do you think it is worth the risk?”

He stays quiet for a moment, “I do. That chance is very small. I doubt anyone would dare try to harm Hua Cheng. Xie Lian is very peaceful so I doubt he would get upset over something small, even if Hua Cheng did I believe he would be able to calm him. And, well everyone loves Wei-gongzi, they won’t go after him.”

“You’re forgetting something. Your shufu. He won’t be happy to have Hua Cheng in the Cloud Recesses. He barely tolerates Wei Wuxian.”

“I have not forgotten but this is my sect. He is no longer in charge here. If I provide permission for them that means he cannot challenge my authority. He will simply have to deal with it.” Lan Xichen says, looking every bit like the sect leader he is.

Jiang Cheng smiles slightly, glad to see the old Lan Xichen back. He’d been broken after Guanyin temple. He remained in seclusion for a long time until Jiang Cheng managed to convince him to emerge, taking him back to Yunmeng until he was ready to return to his position. It’s been two years since Jin Guangyao’s crimes came to light and he was killed and finally Lan Xichen was returning to himself.

“Alright then, sounds like your decision has been made.” Jiang Cheng nods.

Lan Xichen smiles, “So it has.”

Jiang Cheng clears his throat, “Can we get back to the actual reason we’re here?” He says, folding his arms again as he looks at the four across from them.

Xie Lian blushes slightly, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to get so distracted.”

“I did.” Wei Wuxian grins but turns his attention to Lan Xichen.

“I have come to a decision regarding this matter.” Lan Xichen begins.

“Wait, wait. You already heard the story?” He asks, looking between him and his parents.

“Yes. I told them while you were asleep.” Xie Lian answers.

“Oh.” Wei Wuxian frowns.

“As I was saying, I have made a decision. The two of you may stay here in the Cloud Recesses for a while. Not permanently but you can visit Wei Wuxian from time to time if we receive prior notice. If at any time you are denied entrance you must respect that. You must also respect the rules of our sect. Wangji can provide you with a copy.”

“Thank you very much. Your kindness and hospitality is greatly appreciated. We will not stay too long. San Lang has to return to Ghost City soon. We’ve already been away for a long while.” Xie Lian responds with a small bow.

Lan Xichen’s eyes widen slightly, “There is no need to bow, please.” He says it feeling wrong to have a god bow to him.

Wei Wuxian looks at them, his smile fallen, “You have to go again?”

Xie Lian turns to him with a small smile, “Not right away. We can stay for a few days but we will have to go back. San Lang can’t stay away for too long, you know that.” He says gently, reaching over to squeeze his hand.

“But you just got here… what if we lose each other again?” He asks, looking between them.

“We won’t.” Hua Cheng says firmly, “I can leave a butterfly with you. It will remain just outside the entrance, if you leave it will follow. That way we’ll be able to find you.”

Wei Wuxian smiles, “Thank you a-die. Maybe… sometime we can come visit?” He asks hopefully.

“Oh that sounds wonderful!” Xie Lian smiles brightly, looking up at Hua Cheng.

He nods and sends a look to Lan Wangji, “If you decide to come to Ghost City. Your husband may not harm the citizens.”

Wei Wuxian nods, “Of course.” He smiles and reaches over to hug them both.

Lan Xichen turns his eyes away from the interaction to give them some privacy, occupying himself by straightening the teapot.

Wei Wuxian pulls back and bows to Lan Xichen, “Thank you Zewu-jun, I really appreciate it.” He smiles.

He nods, “You are welcome Wei-gongzi. I am glad you were able to reunite. You may roam the same areas in the Cloud Recesses with them as you were permitted during your studies here. They are still guests after all.”

“Of course.” He stands, his smile even brighter than usual as his parents do the same and he leads them out, already talking excitedly to them about all the things he wants to show them.

Hua Cheng keeps his arm wrapped around Xie Lian’s waist, looking over his head at Lan Xichen and giving a slight nod before turning back to his son. Xie Lian’s smile is firmly in place as he talks with him.

Lan Wangji waits until they are out the door before turning to his brother, “Thank you xiongzhang. Wei Ying is very happy.”

Lan Xichen smiles, reaching into his sleeves to pull out two guest tokens, “Give these to Hua chengzhu and Xie-daozhang. Go and get to know them. They’re your family now too.”

Lan Wangji accepts them with a nod, standing up and going to join his husband and fathers-in-law.

Jiang Cheng is staring at the closed door when Lan Xichen turns to him.

“Wanyin? Are you alright?” He asks gently, placing a hand over his.

“I’m fine. I just… haven’t seen him smile like that since- since before the war.” He says quietly.

“Ah… I see.”

Jiang Cheng shakes his head, breaking free of his thoughts, “It doesn’t matter. Forget it.”

“Are you sure?”

He nods, turning back to him, “I am. I did not come here to deal with Wei Wuxian.”

Lan Xichen’s smile reappears, “That is true. Wanyin came for me.” He says, reaching out to gently move Jiang Cheng’s bangs out of his eyes.

“That’s right. And you made me get out of bed at mao time.” He says, crossing his arms.

“How awful of me. I should make it up to Wanyin.” He says, a teasing glint in his eye as he leans in, his hand moving to cup his cheek and gently guide him closer. Their lips meet and Jiang Cheng fights back a smile.

Notes:

Coming up with how the world's are connected was too fun for me not to explain it all.

Chapter Text

Wei Wuxian leads them down the path away from the hanshi, “Lan Zhan, where should we take them first?” He turns and pauses when he doesn’t see him right behind him.

Xie Lian stops as well and looks around, “Now that I think about it, I don’t remember him following.”

“He stayed behind longer.” Hua Cheng says casually.

“Oh. He’s probably talking to Zewu-jun.”

Lan Wangji walks around the corner, soon arriving at their small group.

“Lan Zhan! You’re back.” He grins, wrapping his arms around him.

“Mn.” Lan Wangji gives Xie Lian and Hua Cheng each a token.

Xie Lian smiles, “Thank you. Is this like the token Jiang zongzhu had forgotten?” Hua Cheng tucks his into the folds of his robes, barely sparing it a glance.

Wei Wuxian leans over to look at it and brightens up, “It’s similar. It’s a guest token, while you’re here it will allow you in and out.” He looks up at his husband excitedly, “Zewu-jun gave them tokens?”

Lan Wangji nods silently, wrapping his arms around him when he hugs him tightly.

“I’ll have to thank him.”

“Jiang Cheng is here. Do not disturb Xiongzhang.”

“You’re probably right. Jiang Cheng will be mad.” Wei Wuxian laughs.

Xie Lian puts his token into his sleeve with a smile, relieved that they had not been kicked out.

Wei Wuxian gasps, “Lan Zhan can we show them your bunnies?”

Lan Wangji’s lips turn down a little more and his hold tightens.
“I promise they won’t hurt them. Baba is great with animals.”

Lan Wangji’s eyes drift to Hua Cheng and back.

“A-die won’t hurt them. He likes Baba’s smile too much.” He chuckles.

Xie Lian blushes slightly and looks away whilst Hua Cheng just shrugs, grinning a bit. Lan Wangji looks at them quietly, considering. He looks back at Wei Wuxian and nods slightly.

He smiles brightly and kisses his cheek, “Thank you Lan Zhan!” He leads them away excitedly.

Along the way they see Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling walking down the same path. Wei Wuxian sees them first and hurries along, throwing an arm around Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui’s shoulders.

“Wei-qianbei.” Lan Sizhui greets with a smile.

“Hey! Don’t sneak up on people like that!” Jin Ling complains, earning a laugh from Lan Jingyi.

“What are you guys up to?” Wei Wuxian grins, ignoring the complaints.

“We were taking Jin zongzhu to Caiyi town.” Lan Sizhui replies, both ignoring the developing argument next to them

“Oh! Have fun.” Wei Wuxian smiles as Lan Zhan comes to a stop with the other couple.

Lan Sizhui bows upon seeing them, “Good morning.”

Jin Ling finally pushes his arm off, “Why are you even awake this early?”

“Zewu-jun made us meet at mao time. Mao time!” Wei Wuxian complains dramatically.

“He’s let us stay though. It is very kind of him.” Xie Lian smiles.

“How long will you be staying?” Lan Sizhui asks.

“Just a few days. Then we need to head home unfortunately.” Xie Lian responds.

“I see. I hope we’ll be able to see each other more during your stay.”

“Me too. I’d love to get to know you better.”

“So is your name really Hua?” Lan Jingyi asks.

“Yeah, I have a-die’s name.” Wei Wuxian nods, smirking as he notices Lan Wangji listening in.

“So why haven’t you said anything?”

“I’ve been Wei for so long that it would feel weird to change it now.” He shrugs.

“Why Wei though?” Lan Jingyi asks curiously. Although the rules state one should not ask so many questions, Wei Wuxian has always indulged his naturally curious mind and almost always answered him.

“It’s the name my guardians had used when I was staying with them. I kept it as a safety precaution as a child and it stuck. It would be weird to change it now.”

Hua Cheng glares, “I should increase his debt.”

Xie Lian chuckles and places a hand on his arm, “Now, now San Lang. It’s not his fault A-Ying was so well known as Wei.” His smile turns a little sad, “Besides, he’s paid enough don’t you think?”

Hua Cheng looks at him and sighs, “I won’t increase it gege. Please don’t be sad.” He gently caresses his cheek.

He smiles a little and leans into the touch, “I try.” He whispers.

Lan Jingyi looks at Wei Wuxian, his eyes wide, “Your… fake A-die isn’t dead?” He whispers.

“Technically he is.” He answers.

“He’s a ghost?”

“Has been for hundreds of years.” He nods.

“That’s so cool!”

“Jingyi!” Lan Sizhui gasps.

“No no no, not the being dead thing!” He corrects quickly, “Just that you know so many ghosts.”

Wei Wuxian chuckles, “I guess it is.”

“So where are you going?” Jin Ling asks, hoping to get the conversation back into normal territory.

“We’re going to visit the bunnies!” Wei Wuxian smiles brightly.

Jin Ling looks between the two couples, raising an eyebrow, “All of you? Hanguang-jun is allowing that?”

“Yes. He is.” Wei Wuxian grins, “Isn’t he amazing?”

Jin Ling hums and turns, “We should continue on our way.” He says to the younger Lans, resuming their walk down the path.

Lan Jingyi and Lan Sizhui bow with a smile, “We’ll be on our way.”

Wei Wuxian laughs, “Have fun.” He waves as they turn, following Jin Ling.

Xie Lian smiles, “They seem very nice.”

“They are, though Jin Ling takes after Jiang Cheng way too much.” Wei Wuxian chuckles.

“I’m sure it helps though. Having to be a sect leader at such a young age.”

Wei Wuxian’s smile turns sad, “Yeah, I think it does. Luckily he also has lots of people willing to help him.” He watches them for a moment before turning back to his parents, “Lets go, we have bunnies to see!”

Xie Lian smiles and nods, “So we do.”

Wei Wuxian leads Xie Lian along, talking excitedly to him about his adventures of the past few years. Lan Wangji and Hua Cheng are left to follow along behind their husbands, listening quietly to the way Wei Wuxian tells his story.

The bunnies finally come into view and Wei Wuxian grins, “We’re here!” He says and tugs Xie Lian along towards them.

“I’m coming.” Xie Lian laughs, keeping pace with his son as they hurry towards them.

“No hurried walking in the Cloud Recesses.” Lan Wangji reminds his husband calmly.

Wei Wuxian sits among the bunnies with Xie Lian, many already crowding Xie Lian. He smiles up at Lan Wangji, “You’ll forgive me right?”

Lan Wangji looks at him quietly for a moment before averting his eyes, “Mn.”

Wei Wuxian grins up at him until he notices there were less bunnies around him than usual. He looks down and laughs when he sees a few sitting in Xie Lian’s lap whilst he holds another.

Xie Lian smiles sheepishly, “They just came.” Lan Wangji watches as his bunnies surround the man as they usually would for him.

“I told you Baba was good with animals.” Wei Wuxian laughs.

The group stays with the bunnies for a long time as the small family catch up on everything they’ve missed while separated. Eventually they leave them, Wei Wuxian had been getting too fidgety, and explore the Cloud Recesses. Wei Wuxian remains in the lead as he shows them all the places he would get up to mischief with Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang back in their junior days. They pass the training fields and Xie Lian pauses in his steps, watching the juniors practising.

Wei Wuxian chuckles, “What do you think? Are they good?”

“Hm, mostly. They’ll certainly hold up in a fight against the typical prey in a night hunt.” Xie Lian says, his eyes roaming the field and silently assessing each student.

“But?” Hua Cheng prompts.

“Facing any fierce corpses or stronger opponests… they’ll definitely struggle. I’m not certain they would succeed.”

“They are still juniors.” Lan Wangji says.

Xie Lian blushes, “Yes, yes of course!” He says quickly, “I didn’t mean to offend. It was merely an observation.”

Wei Wuxian chuckles, “Baba loves martial arts, he’s the best swordsmaster I know. No offense Lan Zhan.”

“The best you know you say?” A voice speaks up from behind him.

Wei Wuxian jumps, “Ah! Lan xiansheng! When did you get here?”

Lan Wangji turns around, “Shufu.” He bows.

“Wangji.” Lan Qiren nods, “I saw Wei Wuxian near the training grounds with strange men. Of course I would come to investigate. I will not allow you to try any of your tricks again.” He directs a sharp look at Wei Wuxian who grins sheepishly.

“I wasn’t planning on it. I am just showing my baba and a-die around.” He says, gesturing to the couple.

Xie Lian bows respectfully, “We are very grateful for having been allowed entry. I believe you are the one who taught our A-Ying when he was a student here, thank you for taking care of him.”

Lan Qiren looks between them, “To allow such a powerful ghost into our Cloud Recesses. What tricks did you use on my nephew?”

“Shufu. They have spoken to xiongzhang. He has given them guest tokens.” Lan Wangji says.

Lan Qiren looks back at him, frowning at the news. For the sake of politeness he moves on from the matter, returning his gaze to Xie Lian, “Wei Wuxian says you are a great swordsmaster and yet you carry no sword.”

Xie Lian smiles, “Ah, yes. I prefer to avoid violence if I can. I don’t carry a sword anymore.” He explains, the tension in the air palpable.

“One should keep their skills sharp should they not?” Lan Qiren asks, assessing Xie Lian as he does his students.

“I agree. My husband and I spar regularly.” He says, hiding his discomfort at his gaze. Hua Cheng wraps his arm around him, glaring at the old man.

“I see. I happened to overhear your assessment of my students. What was your reasoning for believing them unable to handle themselves against stronger foes?”

“I meant no offense.” Xie Lian says, bowing his head slightly, “It… is merely that their form seems to be off for the way they fight. Some may benefit from a style more suited to their personal build and skill set.”

Lan Qiren glances over at his students before returning his gaze to Xie Lian, “Is that so? Well daozhang, why not show me how you believe I should be teaching my disciples.”

“A-Ah, no I couldn’t.” Xie Lian says quickly.

“I insist.”

Xie Lian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Hua Cheng lets go of his waist as Xie Lian steps toward the students, followed closely by Lan Qiren. He moves between the students, quietly guiding some of them into other stances to attempt their attacks. In the beginning they look at Lan Qiren who nods before they change their positions as instructed. Xie Lian confirms that each student is doing better before he moves on to the next. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi have since returned from Caiyi city after seeing Jin Ling off and are among the group. He whispers apologies to them before correcting their forms, very aware of Lan Qiren watching him closely.

“A-die, calm down.” Wei Wuxian whispers.

Hua Cheng glares sharply at Lan Qiren, “Gege does not deserve to be treated like this.”

“He’s just cautious, A-die. He doesn’t like me because I’m everything against the rules and then he heard Baba. He teaches them the Lan way, he doesn’t like being told it’s wrong.”

Lan Wangji watches them move through the students quietly, watching as once adjusted by Xie Lian their attacks become stronger and more effective for combat. Xie Lian finishes and goes back to his husband. He feels the stares on him and smiles awkwardly, grateful for the way Hua Cheng subtly shields him from them.

Lan Qiren comes back to him, “You seem to have an eye for teaching. Where did you learn to fight?” He asks.

“It was a very long time ago that I first learnt. I’m afraid the sect has long since dissolved, you wouldn’t know of it.” He says, smiling at him.

“The Wen clan?” He asks suspiciously.

“I assure you I was never part of the Wens. It was before that.”

“Hm, I’d like to see more of what you know. Would you care to give us a demonstration?” Lan Qiren asks.

The juniors pause in their practice, shocked by the question. Lan Qiren rarely organised a demonstration, especially from a guest cultivator.

“Oh, it’s really not all that.” Xie Lian says, looking over at Wei Wuxian for assistance.

“Baba doesn’t like to show off his skill. That’s why he doesn’t carry a sword.”

Lan Xichen is going on a walk with Jiang Cheng when he sees them talking and pauses, “Wanyin, I apologise for doing this to you again but will you give me a moment? I would like to make sure Shufu is not causing any problems for Xie-daozhang and Hua chengzhu.”

Jiang Cheng looks over and scoffs, “Of course Wei Wuxian has managed to cause some type of commotion. Lets go.”

“Thank you Wanyin.” Lan Xichen approaches the group, “Shufu. Is something wrong?”

Lan Qiren looks over, “Xichen. There is no problem. I have merely asked for a demonstration of this daozhang’s skill.”

Jiang Cheng looks over at Xie Lian, curious about his abilities as well. Lan Xichen looks between them.

“If Xie-daozhang does not wish to show his ability that is his choice.” Lan Xichen says, hiding his own curiosity.

“Gege, you know I would not push you.” Hua Cheng whispers, “But you deserve the the attention. Besides, you’d have fun wouldn’t you?”

Xie Lian looks up at him, “San Lang…”

“An opponent other than me will be more exciting for you. There are multiple strong cultivators here for you to spar with.”

Xie Lian thinks about it quietly for a moment before nodding a little, “Alright. I suppose it could be fun.”

Wei Wuxian smiles, “I haven’t seen you fight in so long!”

Xie Lian chuckles softly, “I haven’t had to.” He looks at Lan Qiren, “Who am I fighting?”

“Wangji?” Lan Qiren asks.

Lan Wangji shakes his head slightly, “I will not be a satisfying opponent.”

Wei Wuxian grins, bouncing over to Jiang Cheng, “Why don’t you go ChengCheng? You love fighting.”

Jiang Cheng glances between them, “I use a whip in addition to my sword.”

Xie Lian shrugs slightly, “That’s fine.”

Jiang Cheng glances at Lan Xichen who just smiles, “Have fun Wanyin.”

Lan Qiren nods, “I will send for a sword.”

Notes:

I feel like I made Lan Qiren seem really horrible but he's hard to balance. He wasn't supposed to be but trying to combine him being strict and defensive of their techniques plus suspicious about Hualian ended up with it that way. But given Wei Wuxian's trouble making tendencies and Hua Cheng's qi he couldn't not be suspicious. Anyway hope you enjoyed.

Chapter Text

Hua Cheng grins, “Gege doesn’t need a sword. Especially if you want this to remain safe.” He says and gestures to his husband who has wandered towards the trees nearby.

Xie Lian picks up a sturdy stick from the floor, weighing it in his hand. Jiang Cheng stares at him.

“He can’t be serious.” He says, looking back at Hua Cheng and Wei Wuxian.

“Oh! I always heard about that time he used a stick! I’ve never gotten a chance to see it though.” Wei wuxian says excitedly.

Xie Lian returns to the group with the stick, smiling a bit, “Alright. I’m ready.”

Lan Qiren looks at the stick in his hand, “You seem to be very confident. Very well.” He returns to the students, getting them ready to watch the spar and instructing them to pay close attention.

Those not fighting clear away to the sides where they can watch from where they are out of the way.

“Is he really going to be alright with only a stick?” Lan Xichen asks.

“Of course.” Hua Cheng scoffs.

Jiang Cheng watches Xie Lian cautiously, he’s heard a few stories about the god and ghost that should be worshipped together and he’d heard plenty about Hua Cheng however stories about Xie Lian were few. He had never been one to frequent temples regularly and was usually too busy to pay attention to new stories of the gods so he didn’t know much about him.

“Before we begin, are you a martial or civil?” He asks, being careful not to say too much where others could hear.

“Will it change your decision on fighting?” Xie Lian asks calmly.

“No. I just want to know how much face I will be losing.” He crosses his arms, not arrogant enough to believe he could defeat a god in battle.

Xie Lian smiles, “The first two times I was martial. Does that answer satisfy you?”

Jiang Cheng pauses, looking at him in shock, “Two?”

Xie Lian simply smiles at him and nods. He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Let’s get this over with.” He gets into position, Zidian sparking in preparation.

The fight begins and Jiang Cheng attacks immediately with Zidian. Xie Lian dodges his attacks easily, using the stick to deflect Sandu when it gets too close. It goes on this way for some time with Xie Lian merely dodging his attacks with apparent ease while Jiang Cheng grows more frustrated with each missed hit.

“Is this why you’re so good at dodging Wei-qianbei?” Lan Jingyi asks, watching the fight excitedly.

“Yeah, Baba would teach me some stuff during their visits.” He grins.

“Hua-chengzhu, pardon my curiosity but, who would you say is stronger Xie-daozhang or you?” Lan Xichen asks, looking over at him.

“Gege. Always gege, no one compares.” He says instantly, his eyes never leaving the man in question.

“Come on!” Jiang Cheng yells, bringing everyone’s attention back to the fight, “This isn’t a fight if you’re just dodging the whole time!”

“I suppose you have a point.” Xie Lian smiles and instantly his aura changes as he goes on the offensive.

Jiang Cheng suddenly is no longer able to find an opening to attack, forced into going on the defensive. Xie Lian smiles as he attacks, silently analysing Jiang Cheng as they fight to look for any weaknesses and to see how much longer he can hold out without pushing himself too far. As soon as he notices the signs he was looking for Xie Lian makes one final attack, landing Jiang Cheng on his back with the end of the stick pointed at his neck. Jiang Cheng pants, Zidian returning to its ring form on his finger, Sandu fallen just out of reach.

“Xie-daozhang wins.” Lan Xichen says, taking a step towards them.

Xie Lian moves back and offers Jiang Cheng a hand. Jiang Cheng glares at it for a moment, he sighs and accepts the hand, too drained to put up a fight. Xie Lian pulls him up with a friendly smile, the stick in his free hand.

“Thank you Jiang-zongzhu. I enjoyed that, you make for a good opponent.”

“Yeah right.” He scoffs, “You haven’t even broken a sweat.”

“I have had many more years of practice than you have. You however are one of few opponents that went all out from the start, most tend to go easy on me at first. And San Lang… well, he always looks too sad when I ask.” He chuckles softly.

Jiang Cheng looks at him, “I’m not surprised, you don’t exactly look very threatening. I just had prior knowledge of that fact.”

“So I’ve heard.” Xie Lian smiles, “Many of my… fellow cultivators often forget about that as well.”

Hua Cheng approaches quickly, followed by the elder three Lans and Wei Wuxian. Hua Cheng wraps Xie Lian in his arms instantly, pulling him close.

“San Lang!” Xie Lian laughs.

“Dianxia is so beautiful.” He whispers, leading his head down, “Did you have fun gege?”

Xie Lian blushes but leans back into him, “Yes I did. San Lang was right.”

“That was amazing baba!” Wei Wuxian grins, “You beat ChengCheng so well!” He laughs as he points out the dirt on his robes and all of the newly loose strands of hair.

Jiang Cheng scowls as he dusts himself off.

“I apologise Jiang-zongzhu. I tried to keep damage to your robes as little as possible. I failed to not get them dirty.”

“It’s fine. They can be cleaned.”

Xie Lian smiles, relieved he was not angry. Lan Qiren steps forward and Hua Cheng instantly holds Xie Lian tighter, glaring at him.

“Daozhang is indeed as talented as Wei Wuxian claims. To be able to defeat a sect leader like Sandu Shengshou is proof of that.”

“Thank you. My name is Xie Lian, you may call me that if you would like.” Xie Lian smiles.

Lan Qiren nods, “I am Lan Qiren.”

Lan Xichen goes to Jiang Cheng’s side, silently looking him over to make sure he’s not hurt. Jiang Cheng notices what he’s doing immediately and rolls his eyes.

“I’m fine.” He grumbles under his breath.

Lan Xichen smiles and turns his attention back to the group, “Now that this is complete we will be taking our leave.” He walks away with Jiang Cheng, back towards the hanshi.

“I will return to my students. Thanking Xie-daozhang for his demonstration.” Lan Qiren says, bowing his head politely.

“Thank you for the chance.” Xie Lian says with a bow.

Lan Qiren retreats back to his students, taking them back to the classroom to continue lessons. Hua Cheng finally lets go of Xie Lian, drawing the attention of Wei Wuxian who stops his rambling to Lan Wangji.

“Time to carry on the tour!” He cheers.

“No clamour.” Lan Wangji says, mostly for appearances sake.

Wei Wuxian just grins and continues on.

~~

Evening comes around and the group heads back to their rooms, after a long day of exploring and catching up. They stop outside the door of the guest room and Lan Wangji reaches into a qiankun pouch. He takes out the list of rules and hands it to Xie Lian who accepts it politely. He looks at it curiously for a moment, reading the title and having a small peak inside.

“Ah, the rules Lan-zongzhu mentioned.” He smiles.

“Mn.”

“There’s four thousand now Baba! It’s awful!” Wei Wuxian complains.

“I’m sure it’s not that bad A-Ying.” Xie Lian chuckles.

“You still live here so I doubt it’s as bad as you say.” Hua Cheng grins.

“Wei Ying breaks the rules everyday.”

“Lan Zhan! How could you!” Wei Wuxian cries, latching onto his arm.

Xie Lian chuckles, “I’ll make sure to read through them tonight Lan Wangji. Thank you.”

Lan Wangji nods, gently patting Wei Wuxian’s back as he whines.

Hua Cheng zones out for a while, his fingers pressed to his temple. Xie Lian looks up at him when he feels his hand tighten slightly on his waist. He frowns a little as he waits for him to finish. Hua Cheng sighs and drops his hand, meeting Xie Lian’s gaze.

“What is it? What’s happened?” Xie Lian asks, pulling Wei Wuxian’s attention back to them.

“Qi Rong is bored. We need to return.” Hua Cheng sighs.

“He’s attacked Ghost City again?” Wei Wuxian asks quietly.

“Some things never change.” Xie Lian sighs, “As long as we go to sort it out everything will be fine but… that does mean we have to go.”

“You… you said we’d have a few days.” Wei Wuxian whispers.

“I’m sorry A-Ying. We’ll make sure to sort that bastard out quickly. We can visit again soon.” Hua Cheng says, placing a hand on his shoulder.

“He mostly does it now so we don’t spend all our time searching. He’s trying to help… in his own way.” Xie Lian says quietly, “We’ve found you now. We’ll see each other again soon.”

“Promise?” Wei Wuxian whispers.

“Promise.” Xie Lian pulls him into a hug, Hua Cheng closing them both in his arms.

Wei Wuxian holds on tight, fighting back tears as he hides his face in Xie Lian’s shoulder. Lan Wangji stands quietly, at a loss for how he can help his husband. They eventually pull back from one another and Xie Lian gently wipes away the tears from Wei Wuxian’s cheeks.

“We’ll see each other again.” He whispers, “I’m so glad we found you.”

“I’m glad you found me too.” Wei Wuxian whispers. He sniffles and straightens up, “You won’t be able to use the dice in the boundary. We can walk you to the exit.”

“Thank you A-Ying.” Xie Lian whispers.

Wei Wuxian walks between his parents as he leads them out. Lan Wangji follows behind them quietly, his eyes trained on Wei Wuxian. He watches from a little ways away as he says his final goodbyes at the exit. Hua Cheng throws his dice in the air and upon catching them a door has appeared in front of the couple. They wave one final time to Wei Wuxian before Hua Cheng opens the door and guides Xie Lian through with a hand on the small of his back. Yelling can be heard from the other side until the door closes behind them. Lan Wangji steps toward Wei Wuxian who stays completely still while the door disappears. As soon as it’s gone Wei Wuxian turns and hugs Lan Wangji tightly, burying his face in the fabric of his robes. Lan Wangji’s eyes widen slightly and he wraps his arms around him gently, holding him as he feels a wet spot slowly forming on his robes. He decides that today is not everyday, today is just for Wei Wuxian.

~~

Wei Wuxian wakes the next morning alone in bed as he often does however this time when he sits up he sees Lan Wangji still in their room. He slides out from under the covers and makes his way over, sitting next to him. He leans against him and has a look at the table in front of them, seeing that Lan Wangji is grading the juniors work.

“Wei Ying is awake.”

“Mn. Lan Zhan stayed…” He says quietly.

“Was worried about Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji says, having stopped working on the papers completely.

“I miss them.” Wei Wuxian whispers.

Lan Wangji nods a little, manoeuvring Wei Wuxian so that he is in his lap and able to lean against his chest where he’s held comfortingly.

“Will Lan Zhan come with me to Ghost City in a few days?” He asks quietly.

“Mn. I will go with Wei Ying.”

Wei Wuxian smiles and relaxes into him, “Thank you Lan Zhan.”

Notes:

This was fun to write but if I had posted any of it before I was done writing it probably wouldn't have gotten finished.

I have thought of writing a fix about Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen as the focus and a part with Wangxian's trip to Ghost City but college is starting again soon so we'll see if I get there.

Notes:

I'm still new to all the different titles and terms of address and such so if I've made mistakes anywhere please let me know the same goes for if I've left out any tags.
