Chapter 1: An interesting first meeting, to say the least…
Chapter Text
From the safe distance of his balcony he observed…he saw a young witch playing around with her new spell book, first she spent a little too long figuring out how to pronounce a word and then, when she finally got it, sparks flew everywhere and she ran back to her mother smiling and laughing to show her the spell she cast, he wondered if that was her first ever spell, he can’t quite remember his first attempt at a proper spell, he’s not even sure he ever fully casted one after the incident, he’d always back out last second and not say the final word, he’s always been told not to use magic. He’s half enderian and enderian’s are dangerous with magic, that’s what he’s been taught…that his magic is too strong for this world, so strong that nothing good will ever come from it…and for a while he didn’t quite understand that, until one day, he tried a spell, something went wrong and…
He kept looking at the girl and her mother, the girl giggling as she attempts to explain what the spell looked like to her mother, the mother smiling proud of her daughter and suddenly, from the corner of his eye he detects movement, he looks over to find whatever it is he saw now gone with no trace of it ever being there at all, Wilbur thinks he must’ve imagined it and brushes it off as nothing.
But for whatever reason, strange things just kept on happening to him throughout the week. His things kept disappearing and he kept seeing…something from the corner of his eyes. He was starting to think he was going insane so he decided to consult his brother, Techno, about it.
So, he explained the situation…
“I think you’re cursed”
“Really…?” Wilbur asked him worriedly.
“No dumbass, it’s obviously just someone messing with you, probably a fairy or something, no big deal.”
“Oh…”
So he thought about it for a bit, became a bit more observant, if it really was a fairy he would be able to see it, having eyes of ender meant you could see ender magic in a different way than most witches, so he was sure it wasn’t any sort of magical creature attempting to drive him insane.
After thinking about it for a while he settled on ignoring it. —It’ll go away eventually— he thought to himself…except it didn’t, day after day, week after week and nothing changed, this certainly wasn’t a fairy so then what in the actual fuck was it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He sat on the roof peacefully admiring the moon, the enderian, whose name he’d recently learned is Wilbur, had no clue what was going on, teasing him was fun. He knew teasing him wasn’t his job, he knew what he was supposed to do, what “he” ordered for him to do…but he wasn’t one to kill an innocent man, especially when the guy wasn’t even a threat, he was just some dude who just so happened to be half enderian, but disobeying “him” is like having a death wish, so he had to go through with this. He knew he’d have to talk to the guy eventually, gain his trust and all that…but for now he’s settled on driving him insane.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was dark out and Wilbur couldn’t sleep, so he decided to go out to his balcony and get some fresh air. He pushed open the old and heavy stained glass doors leading to it and stepped outside, it was way quieter than he expected it to be —figures, it’s late.— he thought. He looked at the town before him, the town that feared him ever since he was a child, the town that he loved despite it not loving him back…he thought about his future, will he ever leave Lmanburg? Will he ever learn to control his magic…live a normal life perhaps? He wasn’t sure. All he knew was that his magic was dangerous…that he was dangerous.
And so, he admired the view, he could see his old primary school from there and the moon was crescent shaped, it was sort of windy out but not enough for him to wear a jacket. Despite the way he’s treated, he quite likes his town, it was where he grew up after all.
He continued to admire the view that was before him and then-
“So, what’s on your mind?” A voice coming from the rooftop asked, this scared the shit out of Wilbur.
“HOLY SHI- WHAT THE FUCK WHO ARE YOU AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN UP THERE?”
“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle ya” the voice stepped off of the roof and onto Wilbur’s balcony revealing a young witch “My name’s Tommy, I’ve been watching you for a few weeks” he had curly blonde hair and wore a simple red and white t-shit paired up with some jeans and a black cloak on top.
“IT WAS YOU! WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?” Wilbur asked him, he was fucking pissed, and scared, who was this kid, what did he want and why had he been stalking Wilbur?
“Ok chill…I heard there was an enderian in town and I wanted to know more but if I were to have asked you directly you would have immediately shut me down so I decided on the second best option”
“Stalking me?” He shot Tommy a disgusted look “Well I wouldn’t say that, it was more of…observing.” Wilbur wasn’t amused…”So, what do you want?” Wilbur asked again.
“Okay look, for the time that I’ve been watching you I’ve realised you don’t do magic but you keep looking at others do magic and it’s obvious you wish that was you so…” he continued
“I want to teach you how to do magic.”
…
“Are you insane?” Wilbur disappointedly asked.
“Nonononono just hear me out.” The kid tried to justify his words, Wilbur wasn’t having it. This kid…Tommy, he was insane if he thought Wilbur, the town’s enderian, could ever do magic.
“It’s illegal for enderians to do magic, you should know that. So just leave me alone.”
“You’re only half enderian, I’m pretty sure that’s legal.”
“It’s still dangerous, plus, I’m not interested in learning magic.” Of course this was a lie but he couldn’t risk hurting someone again, he didn’t want a repeat of the last time he ever tried to do magic.
“Look, I was sent here to investigate you so either way I’m gonna keep talking to you no matter what, I’ve gotta do my job and you’re an interesting guy so I’m not leaving you alone anytime soon…whether you choose to take advantage of our time together and learn magic or not is entirely up to you, but you really look like you want to learn magic so…” Wilbur already didn’t like this kid. He was annoying, insistent and a creep…but he’s wanted to learn magic since he was a kid.
Still, he just couldn’t risk history repeating itself.
“I’ve already made up my mind, I don’t want to do magic.” Wilbur decided
…
“Can I at least sleep in your room? It gets cold out here…” He’d say he’s surprised at the fact that the kid didn’t even check into the local motel and instead has just been sleeping outside this whole time but we’ve already established that he’s weird as fuck so he wasn’t really all that surprised.
“Fine. But you’re sleeping on the floor.” Wilbur coldly answered, no way he was letting this creepy ass stranger take his bed, even letting him in was already risky enough but he’s just a child and he clearly wasn’t going away anytime soon so he guessed there’s no harm in letting him stay…he would have to figure out how to explain this to Phil and Techno though…he was sure Phil would be understanding, he’d probably even try to adopt the fucking child, but…he knew Techno would be mad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He opened his eyes that morning to see a warm and cozy room belonging to the enderian, he was happy to be inside now, he hated sleeping outside but “he” didn’t actually want Tommy to talk to the enderian, Tommy’s job was to kill him and leave no evidence of it being linked to “him”, but Wilbur’s schedule wasn’t making that easy, so he decided on the second best option…gaining his trust and then doing the killing.
But…he kinda liked the guy.
Sure, he was cold and rude and stubborn…but he too was a person and he too had a heart.
He played guitar, he tried his best not to smile when he saw other people happy but he’d always fail, he’d bring his brother tea and cookies every single day so that he’d have something to munch on while working, he insisted he didn’t care about not being able to do magic simply to not worry his father…and most importantly, he let Tommy in.
Tommy had a pretty rough childhood, it took him a while to learn magic so his classmates never wanted to work with him during group projects with the excuse that he would ruin everything and earn them a bad mark.
He never knew his dad, his mom often told him that he was a pirate who died in a shipwreck whilst going on a dangerous quest…but he later on found out that his dad was simply just a merchant who disappeared without a trace a little before Tommy was born, this information was certainly disappointing but whoever he was and why he left didn’t change the fact that he was absent, nothing would ever change the endless nights of Tommy listening to his mother cry without being able to comfort her.
He never relied on his mother for help, he didn’t want to hurt her with the knowledge that her son was getting bullied at school or that he was struggling to do magic. So he learnt to do things by himself and eventually he met Dream. Now, Dream was an odd guy, I mean…recruiting a child as an assassin? He was strict too, but he wasn’t heartless, he cared about George and Sapnap and Karl. But Tommy hated working for him. Tommy was no killer, Dream was. The only reason he was still working for the guy was because he needed the money.
Eventually, his mom died and all he had left was Dream and his only two friends, Ranboo and Tubbo.
Dream’s goal was to wipe the world from half enderians, full enderians weren’t much of a problem to him, since their use of magic was made illegal centuries ago…but half enderians could still use it, rightfully so too, if they knew how to use it then it wasn’t really all that dangerous…but Dream is stubborn and thinks otherwise, and Tommy’s gotta follow the dude’s instructions, can’t disobey that guy, it wouldn’t end well unless you’re George or Sapnap.
Though Dream’s fairly kind to Tommy, it’s clear they’re not friends. Tommy used to think they were, but then he met Tubbo and Ranboo and he realised that Dream was simply just his boss.
Tommy didn’t want to kill Wilbur…he hadn’t done anything wrong, he didn’t mean to hurt anyone, he was good and Tommy knew that but Dream didn’t. Probably cause he never took the time to even meet the guy, only looked at his files and determined he was an ill-minded villain because of a mistake he made six years ago.
He looked over at Wilbur, sound asleep.
He figured Wilbur’s family was probably awake already but he decided against the idea of talking to them to not freak them out before Wilbur was awake to explain.
In all honesty, Tommy was glad Wilbur declined his offer…he wasn’t the best at magic so how was he supposed to teach Wilbur magic?
He came up with the idea to teach him magic on the spot, he’d gotten tired of stalking the poor guy and never finding a good time to kill him so he decided to talk to the guy, but then he realised that Wilbur’s extremely stubborn and it was gonna take more than simple small talk to gain the dude’s trust.
He knew it wasn’t his job, he didn’t have to figure out how to teach an enderian to do magic…but Wilbur just looked so damn sad not being able to do magic.
So, Tommy decided that he was teaching him magic yes or yes.
So he got to planning their lessons.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wilbur woke up to an unfamiliar setting.
The window blinds were wide open, it was earlier than usual, there was a blanket on the floor and the kid was sitting at his desk working on something…Wilbur wasn’t sure how to feel about this.
In the course of six years, Wilbur had developed a habit. He’d wake up in the late morning to his blinds closed allowing very little light into the room, he’d go downstairs, eat breakfast and then help Phil organize the books at the library and during his break he’d heat up tea and some cookies for Techno.
But this was guaranteed to change the second Wilbur let Tommy into his room…
“What’re you doing?” Wilbur asked Tommy, who was seated at Will’s desk focused on whatever it is he was writing.
“Preparing your magic lessons” he said to Wilbur, this annoyed Will, he’d clearly stated he wasn’t going to do magic.
“I told you I wasn’t doing it.”
“But you didn’t mean it, you want this and we all know it, you’re just scared of hurting someone again, but that’s not happening, I’ll make sure of it.” Tommy knew too much, of course this was because he had been stalking Wilbur for a while (like the little creep that he is), but Will never spoke about how much he longed to do magic and when Phil adopted him they all agreed to never bring up the incident, so how could Tommy possibly know about it?
But besides all that, they both knew Tommy was right.
“How so?” Wilbur started “How are you so sure it won’t happen again?”
“Just trust me” And Wilbur had no choice but to do just that…he knew the kid wasn’t giving up any time soon and a part of him was excited at the idea of finally learning magic. So he trusted him.
…
“What am I gonna tell Phil and Techno?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technoblade had gotten up earlier than usual today, so naturally he decided to take some weight off of Phil’s back by making breakfast for the family! He decided to make baked potatoes (his favorite food) and he was having a nice time making them!
He put on some music, pulled out his recipe book and got to cooking.
He started by seasoning the potatoes with olive oil and salt, then preheating the oven and once that was done getting to the main part of it, baking the potatoes!
Technoblade enjoyed cooking a lot, he had an entire cookbook filled with potato recipes, it was his passion…but he rarely ever got to do it, he was too busy with work and other priorities like family and friends and caring for his garden, so he treasured moments like these where he got to cook and be alone with his thoughts.
Around an hour and a few minutes later, he was in the process of setting up the table, he started arranging the plates and cutlery and napkins, when suddenly he heard a voice:
“Are you making potatoes for breakfast?”
Technoblade stared in horror….
“PHIILLLLL, WHY IS THERE A CHILD IN OUR KITCHEN?” He screamed, the words echoed across the house. He was confused, scared, flabbergasted…he was shocked to say the least, first he thought it might be a ghost but then he realized he had studied ghosts before and they sure as hell didn’t look this alive.
And then he finally spotted Wilbur and decided to question him…
“Wilbur…” he sighed before demanding he explain what’s going on.
And so, Wilbur did, but he left out most of the story and told Techno that he just found Tommy on the street and allowed him to stay in his room for a couple of days…Techno wasn’t all that happy about this.
And then to make matters worse, Philza showed up thinking there was an intruder because of Techno’s scream from earlier and just stood there confused watching as his two children conversed with some kid he’d never seen before.
So then Techno explained and they all ate breakfast together whilst Phil asked Tommy questions about himself and Techno questioned him to make sure he had no evil intentions.
After that, Techno went on with his day with the knowledge that there was now some random kid named Tommy temporarily living in his house…he wasn’t sure how to feel.
Chapter 2: Stroll around town
Chapter Text
The day wasn’t too eventful, Tommy wasn’t done planning the lessons yet so he spent most of the day working on that whilst Wilbur went on with his daily routine of working at the library.
Tommy’s plans consisted of teaching Wilbur the basics of magic first and then the more useful things, he’d planned on showing him the easy spells first, like light spells or making objects float. He was honestly worried, he had really set himself up for failure when he insisted on teaching Will magic, especially since he could barely do magic himself, it took him years to learn magic…how was he supposed to teach it? He felt nothing but regret, he should’ve just followed Dream’s orders and not talked to the guy in the first place.
He’d been working on it all day, so he decided he needed a break, all that thinking and planning was really starting to drain him, but he didn’t want to take a nap or anything, so he figured he’d go talk to Wilbur instead.
He didn’t quite know the way to the library but Phil had explained that it was only a couple of blocks away so Tommy figured he’d be able to find it if he tried hard enough. So he navigated the labyrinth that Will’s house is until he eventually found himself at the entrance…—Now comes the hard part…finding the library— Tommy thought to himself as he stepped outside.
The town wasn’t all that big but it was quite pretty, and though he wanted to, he hadn’t really given himself the time to properly explore it, he was, after all, previously tasked with watching Wilbur’s every move. But now that he was staying with Will, this task wasn’t all that necessary, maybe he could ask Phil or Wilbur to give him a tour of the town sometime soon.
At some point in his search for the library, he forgot his destination and got lost looking around the town…it was small compared to the city, but it wasn’t easy to get around at all, there was so many things and so many places! Tommy was fascinated by this place.
Eventually, he reached a street lined with different coloured houses and shops and buildings and then he suddenly remembered why he was there- he was looking for the library…he also made the realization that he had just walked right past it.
He quickly retreated a couple of steps and found himself standing right in front of what just had to be the biggest building in L’manburg.
Tommy was impressed. The library was a family business that was started by Wilbur’s grandparents, Tommy knew this because it was in the files Dream gave him. He never expected it to be this cool.
Tommy initially thought it was silly that in a world where magic exists someone would choose to open a regular library with no magic involved at all, especially someone from a family like Philza’s (which roots from powerful wizards). But now, he was standing right in front of it and he was, quite frankly, amazed.
As soon as Tommy walked in, some bells that were hanging from the door rang and Techno -who was sitting on the front desk- looked up at him in hopes that there was a new customer, only to be disappointed by the sight of Tommy entering the building.
Tommy noticed a pile of books stacked besides said desk, he saw a couple of titles that he recognised but only one that interested him, it was a guide for beginners magic, Tommy figured he could ask Wilbur for it later.
He scavenged through the library looking for Wilbur and, though it took him a couple of minutes, he finally found him working near the fantasy section.
“Hey Will!” He greeted
“HOLY FU- STOP SNEAKING UP ON ME” That certainly wasn’t the reaction Tommy was expecting but it was amusing nonetheless.
“I didn’t sneak up on you this time, you’re just a jittery guy.” Tommy felt proud of his response, he enjoyed teasing Wilbur, plus, it’s not like he was lying…
“If you say so” Wilbur replied, trying his best to not argue.
“So, what do you want? Weren’t you busy preparing the lessons?” He questioned him. It was an innocent question but it was said in a sort of hostile manner, Tommy figured Wilbur was just tired and ignored it.
“I was…but I figured I could use a break and decided to check up on you instead, when’s your break?” He asked
“In like an hour I think, why?”
“Cool, show me around the town when you’re done, I wanna know where everything is.” He didn’t even ask, just demanded…but Wilbur agreed anyways and now Tommy had plans for the day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And so, an hour passed and Tommy met Wilbur outside the library, ready for his tour of the town.
“So…” Wilbur started “where do you wanna go first?”
“Well, when I was looking for the library earlier, I came across a bunch of shops and stuff, I think I’d like to check that out”
“The marketplace, noted”
And so, they walked. Past the flower shop, through the antique shop, and into what Wilbur liked to call ‘the best café in town’.
“Tommy, if you’re ever longing for good coffee, this is the place for you”
Wilbur stated as they walked in through the front door. Three little bells rang as they opened the door, alerting the employees of their presence.
The first thing that caught Tommy’s attention was the lady working at the front desk, she had hibiscus pink hair and greeted them with a smile.
“Hi there, welcome to the Toadstool Café! How may I be of assistance toda-?” She cut herself off.
“Oh-! Hi Wilbur, you’re here for the usual I presume?”
“Hi Niki, i’m uh, not here for the usual, I’ve brought a…friend along”
Tommy awkwardly waved at her before introducing himself.
“Hi, I’m Tommy”
“So, what would you like to order? The menu’s right over here”
She pointed at a floating booklet near the desk.
Tommy flipped through the booklet and ordered an oreo frappuccino and a bagel before choosing a nice table by the window for him and Wilbur to sit at.
As they waited for their food and coffee to be ready, Tommy found himself lost in his own thoughts.
There wasn’t a singular place like this one back in the city, all the coffee shops over there felt like soulless money grabs. None had nearly as much love and care put into them as this one did.
The chairs were a nice shade of green with what looked to be glass roses wrapped around them like vines, not only that but they were also swings, tied to the roof with gold strings which Tommy presumed were infused with magic in some way.
The walls were covered in pictures and paintings, there was faux glass stars with eternal light spells cast into them hanging from the ceiling, the window sills had a variety of plants on them, there was a chandelier in the shape of a lily of the valley, and in the center of it all, there was a statue of the god Apollo holding a hyacinth in his hand.
Even the food was pretty. It was unlike anything he’d ever had before, the cafeteria in the city could never compare.
