Kitsune's 'Retirement' Snippets

Summary:

My forays into Rhino's wonderful work of Retirement Ended Up Super. First chapter is depressing; an imagining of what Daisy/Quake might act like after Kara's death.

The third chapter is painful, and contains spoilers for the finale of Retirement, do not read it until you've finished the original work.

Chapter 1: Report On Quake After Supergirl's Death

Notes:

So, I wrote this really quickly after Rhino brought up the idea of how Daisy might act after Kara's death (referencing how she acted after Lincoln's) in the server.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Report on the behavior of the vigilante known as Quake following the death of the hero known as Supergirl.

Within the first 24 hours of Supergirl’s death, the only sighting of Quake was of her retrieving Supergirl’s body. No other sightings were reported for 3 days.

Following this brief period of silence, every Cadmus base was systematically & brutally destroyed, with the only survivors being prisoners & victims of experimentation. All Cadmus personnel at these bases were found with extreme physical trauma spread across every inch of their bodies.

The reports from the prisoners are disturbing, to say the least; multiple survivors spoke of the suddenness of the attacks. Quake tore through the bases, bullets simply stopped in front of her. The killing of the Cadmus personnel was swift, their bones cracked with enough force to tear skin, & they simply dropped dead before they could scream. After this period, Quake was not seen for another 4 days.

An attempted spree by the villain known as Psi is what drew Quake back into the spotlight. Soon after reports of Psi’s attempted robbery of a bank in National City emerged, Quake appeared on the scene. The video captured of Quake’s take down of Psi shows a ruthless efficiency. In under 30 seconds, the vigilante appeared on the scene, shot Psi with a tranquilizing bullet, & disappeared. It is unknown why Psi’s abilities seemed to have no effect on Quake.

Following this event, Quake appeared only under 3 circumstances; The appearance of a new villain in National City, all of which were handled with the same ruthless efficiency, the attempted rising of another Cadmus-like organization, & the National city holiday created to honor Supergirl. The snark & casual attitude shown when she was working alongside Supergirl is gone.

In the 4 years since Supergirl’s death, Quake has had 50 appearances. No public statements have been made by the vigilante since Supergirl’s death. Those few who have interacted with her outside of her appearances, mostly former Cadmus prisoners, & were willing to speak of the experience, have all said similar things in regard to her behavior. The consensus is that while Quake is kind, & supposedly even motherly to any children she has interacted with, the woman is deeply depressed. Many speculate that the relationship between Supergirl & Quake was much deeper than the public ever knew, hence the heavily altered behavior.

Notes:

Well I originally had an end note here but ao3 is weird about notes when you add a 2nd chapter to a fic & I accidentally deleted it.

basics: Psi is someone I just found on the wiki, her wiki is very vague, I have not watched Supergirl, her powers don't work on Daisy cause she's already lived through her worst fears + the mind block Andrew gave her. I was unsure what I was going to write next for this, because my only other idea for another snippet at the time was smut, & I really didn't want to put that right after this chapter.

Chapter 2: First Touch Soulmate AU

Summary:

A soulmate is an idea Daisy has pretty much given up on. There's definitely no chance of finding hers now that she's in a completely different universe... right?

Notes:

Yet another idea that popped into my mind& I just had to write. I might write another few Rhinoverse soulmate ideas I have in my head? idk.

Edited: As some people have pointed out, I missed the first time they actually touched. Pain. If I continue this au I'll probably rewrite this chapter.

Additional edit: I fixed it, just replaced the handshake with a wave as suggested very helpfully by Greebo.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Daisy looked at the girl who opened the door & immediately knew that she had made the right choice. She could practically taste the golden retriever energy, even with the clear signs of sadness.

“Hello?”

“You’ve got ice cream on your nose,” she couldn’t help the amusement she knew was showing on her face.

“Rats, oh golly, I’m sorry.” Oh sweet jesus, the woman was already gonna give Daisy cavities from overwhelming adorableness, wasn’t she? (Could she even still get cavities? Would the serum kill the germs or whatever caused those?) “Can I help you?”

Well, straight to the point was probably easiest, “I was kinda hoping you could, Supergirl.”

Supergirl’s heartbeat speed up to non-human levels, “What? Supergirl!? I’m not..pfft, I’m not Supergirl. Nothing Super about me. Nope, just an average citizen.” The smile she was wearing was so very fake. Christ she was worse then Simmons was with Sitwell.

“Oh wow, you are a terrible liar. But chill, I’m not here to threaten you or like out your secret or anything.” Daisy gave a pointed look around the hallway she stood in, “But maybe a conversation you want to not have in your hallway?”

“I mean, I’m not…”

Okay, She really didn’t want any nosy neighbors hearing what she had to say, she gave a careful (but powerful, the woman was Supergirl) push with her powers & stepped into the apartment, closing the door with another gust of powers, “Breathe, I’m not human. Kinda why I need your help.”

Supergirl blinked at her, “What was…what was that?”

“I control vibrations, the air vibrates, I can make controlled shockwaves.” It was the simple explanation, but the longer one could come later, possibly never. Her eyes locked onto the cartons of ice cream on the coffee table, oh, probably not the best timing, “Sorry if I’m interrupting?”

Supergirl’s eyes widened a bit, “Oh no, not interrupting just me &…darn.” & then faster then Daisy could see, she was clearing away the cartons, before suddenly skidding back to in front of Daisy, “What, um, you wanted help with something? How did you know I was…”

“Supergirl?” Daisy let a hand slide into her pocket, she was totally right about choosing to talk to her, though the timing maybe could’ve been a bit better, “I’m new to this world, like arrived last week. Been mostly doing recon, figuring this place out, but well figured hunting down a local who’d know the actual situation of things would speed that up. So looked into it, & uh, you weren’t that hard to track down if you know how to run some facial recognition & chart the number of sightings of you near Catco.”

Supergirl’s mouth hung open for a second, “That’s…oh.” Shaking her head, her eyes brightened, “You need help?”

“Yeah, but I mostly just have a lot of questions.” She gave a small wave, “My name’s Daisy Johnson, people called me Quake on my last world.”

Supergirl was quick to repeat the gesture, “Kara Danvers.”

“Nice to meet you, Kara,” She withheld a wince at the idea of someone so clearly not happy, yet so eager to help, “if this is a bad time I can swing by a different time. I saw in the news the whole…whatever fucked up your head incident a few days ago.”

“You believe it wasn’t me?” Oh her voice was poorly hidden desperate tones.

“Well it was your body, but I’ve only been here a week & I know that was wildly out of character.” Casual approach, it was the closest thing that worked for her, “Assumed you’d probably be benched for a while to talk to a shrink or something,” Even Shield had tried to get another shrink in after Hive, “so now might not be the worst time to swing by with some questions?”

She could see the sort of reboot Kara was going through, it was adorable. “Do you want food, or to sit down or um…I’m sorry people don’t usually just show up here? Not that that’s a bad thing. I-”

Oh rambling was sure to go on if she didn’t stop it. “You haven’t eaten anything other than sugar like all day have you?”

Kara’s shoulders slumped, there was a tiny bit of a pout in her voice, “No, I haven’t.”

“Well question one then, what’s the best takeout in the area that has real food in it?” God she was not gonna be able to stop smiling for however long she was around Kara, was she?

A small smile broke through on Kara’s face, “How do you feel about Chinese? The place down the road has amazing potstickers. Or you don’t know what Chinese is. It’s really good.”

The light chuckle that escaped her couldn’t be helped, “I know what Chinese food is.” She pulled out her phone, “I eat more than a normal human so what should we get?”

Kara wooshed away to grab the take out menu for the food, only to suddenly still, “Um, you wouldn’t be from Fort Rozz would you?”

She frowned, “Not sure what that is, so probably no. Got here in a hell charger, which was not easy by the way. Was pretty sure I was going to get burned to a crisp there for a second.” The confusion on Kara’s face was understandable, “I’m from earth, just… not this earth.”

“Like Barry!” Oh there was the adorable excitement again, “Oh, do you know the Flash?”

Daisy shook her head, but wow that would make explanations so much easier, “Never heard of him, but you know what parallel universes are, the whole multi-verse thing?”

“Yes, Barry explained when he got here. Do you need help getting back?” Kara was so clearly enamored with the idea of helping,

It was… painful. Why was this woman she’d barely bet being so… “No, I’m not looking to go back. New start & all that.” She pushed past memories & stepped closer to Kara, “So, do Chinese restaurants have orange chicken in this universe?”

“We do! & it’s delicious.” Kara offered her the menu, “You’re an alien too?”

Nodding, she looked over the menu & picked out a few options, “Partially, we call ourselves Inhumans, mostly human, alien ancestors. I think one of my grandparents was the alien.” Explaining that whole, everything, would be so very not fun. She looked up at Kara, “& I’d never heard of a Kryptonian before, so I think the difference between our universes was something… galactic, & big. Also, your earth didn’t have a mini-ice age from an alien war in the middle ages according to your Wikipedia. So I’m thinking the difference was like some space war or something. & figured you’d know more about space history than Wikipedia, so…”

Kara gave a faint nod at that before a slight nervousness took in her eyes, “So you found me. How did you do that? You said facial recognition and sightings near Catco?”

Pulling out her phone, she navigated to the restaurant's order page, creating an order with her picks before handing the phone to Kara, “Add what you want, I kinda owe you for helping me out here. Don’t worry about it, brought some Nazi gold over with me. Disappointing to find out both our worlds had to deal with the fascist assholes.”

Kara cringed slightly, “That is a horrible similarity,” She handed the phone back, & Daisy felt a rush of heat shoot through her arm & chest, from the point where their fingers touched. Was that some Kryptonian thing?

Daisy frowned at the itchy feeling just below her breast, almost exactly over her heart, “Seriously, so sick of Nazis.” Scratching at the sensation, didn’t seem to make it go away. She blinked at the suddenly hopeful & slightly watery look in Kara’s eyes, “What?”

Kara was clearly trying desperately (& badly) to hide her massive smile, “Did you just get a hit of warmth, & suddenly a small part of you is itchy?”

“Yeah?” She frowned down at the small part of her chest, “When you put it that way it almost sounds like…” Her frown dropped & she looked back up at Kara, “Oh.”

“Soulmates!” Kara practically squealed in pure excitement & was suddenly hugging Daisy, tightly.

Oh. Daisy was… She had a soulmate?

Notes:

Honestly this was closer to a Daisy's perceptive of their first meeting, but uh, eh? idk, there might be a part 2 later? possibly? I Hope so cause I did kinda leave it on a cliff hanger & I really want to write what happens next, I just don't know what happens next, which is a problem lol. I guess I could've just waited to publish this when I had a longer chapter with more happening after the reveal, but I am impatient & need to save what little patience I do have to keep myself from publishing Sifsdottir early lol.

Chapter 3: Please Wake Up

Summary:

It's been months since the battle with Henshaw. Survival is never perfect

Notes:

You can thank this person for putting this idea in my head. I cried while writing this, cause this hit way to fucking close to home. I'm gonna go try to comfort myself with the fact that this didn't happen in the main story. And probably cry some more.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Lucy looked up at Alex, “Same as yesterday?”

The hollow look in her agent’s eyes was a depressing thing to be used to, “It hasn’t changed in months, why would it be any different today?” The woman’s voice was bitter.

She let out a breath. She wasn’t sure what to do at this point. Ordering Kara to go home and rest had never worked. Frankly it was a miracle when the Kryptonian left the medbay for anything other than food and Supergirl work. “I’ll try talking to her.”

Alex let out a derisive huff, “May as well, fat lotta good it’ll do you.”

Pausing outside of the room Daisy was kept in, she couldn’t help but look in through the window. Kara was sitting in the chair she always sat in, when she wasn’t disobeying the doctor’s orders and laying next to Daisy anyways, and holding her hand. Kara had been slowly getting more and more disheveled as the weeks and months wore on. Her super suit was thrown on the nearest counter to the door, The Girl of Steel’s usually amazing hair was tangled. She was wearing mix-mashed pajamas.

Daisy had thinned throughout the coma. The muscles in her frame had almost entirely disappeared. The woman’s sleeping face was more peaceful than Lucy had ever seen her when she was awake. She had only seen the woman’s face a handful of times before the coma, and only a few dozen times since, but it still struck her as wrong that the woman was asleep rather than fighting, or flirting, or anything.

Lucy pushed open the door and caught the tail end of Kara’s one-sided conversation. “You’d have loved fighting it, your powers would’ve been so much better than I was… I- I miss you.” The woman’s voice cracked, “Please wake up.” Lucy barely caught that last whisper.

“Kara.” Her voice was soft. How could she be anything but soft in the face of this? “I need to talk to you, okay?”

Kara looked up at her with those sad eyes she’d worn for three months and nodded. She stood up and leaned over to kiss Daisy’s forehead before following Lucy outside.

There was no way to put what she had to say lightly. “The doctors don’t want to say this to you, but… Kara, it’s been three months, the odds-”

“Don’t,” Kara’s eyes were shining with tears just barely held back, “please, just don’t.”

Lucy shut her mouth for a second. It needed to be said, no matter how much it sucked, “I hate to put this on you, but you’re the only person she has. You need to think about it as an option.” The tears in Kara’s eyes started falling as she slowly nodded. “I’m so sorry.” She moved so Kara could get back into Daisy’s room.

Kara was back inside in a matter of seconds. She skipped the chair and went straight to curling up and holding Daisy in her arms. Lucy could hear her sobs through the wall. God she felt like an asshole.

Notes:

If I wrote this any longer I'd have probably broken down.

Chapter 4: The Shirt

Summary:

Daisy wasn't really paying attention to what shirt she put on after Kara left for work. She kinda forgot she bought it in the first place cause she thought it'd be funny. Well, she definitely doesn't regret her purchase.

Notes:

We were talking in Rhino's server about their newest chapter in their Skye/Connor fic & JainaSolosWife mentioned Skye wearing the House of El crest, making Connor go crazy, & my first thought was 'I could write the sapphic version cause of Retirement.'

It's short, had fun writing it. maybe this'll help my writers block so I can actually get one of my bigger projects done

Chapter Text

Daisy smiled as she heard the familiar woosh of Kara entering the apartment. Her back was almost healed enough for her to do something other than sit around the apartment, hack, and cook. She’d have made some appearances as Quake already if a certain Kryptonian didn’t have super-pouting.

“That smells so good! What is it?”

“Red braised pork belly.” She looked back over at the rice maker. “The rice should be done right about now, You mind getting the bowls for it?”

It wasn’t long before she was turning the burner off, and absentmindedly reaching behind her for the bowls Kara had filled with rice in the mean time, “So, how was it today?”

Kara gave her one of those insanely adorable smiles along with the first bowl, “Oh, nothing to bad, an attempted robbery, a small fire, some-”

As Daisy turned with both bowls ready to eat, Kara completely froze. Daisy blinked, “Kara, you alright?” She looked down where Kara’s eyes were locked, “Is there something on my shirt?”

She barely registered Kara grabbing the bowls and setting them on the counter before she was pinned against the wall and being kissed like it was the end of the world. Okay then. “Not that I’m complaining-” Kara kissed a line down her throat, “-Fuck, def not complaining, but uh, what’s brought this on?”

Kara pulled back for a second, looked her in the eyes, looked down pointedly at her shirt, and went back to her assault on Daisy’s neck. Which was amazing, but didn’t explain anything. Daisy pushed Kara off to pull off her shirt, pausing when she noticed what, exactly, was on it. “This is because I was wearing a Supergirl shirt?”

“It’s my crest.” Kara pressed more kisses against her skin, moving further down. “On you.” Her fingers started toying with the button to Daisy’s jeans.

“So, wearing-” She let out a pleased groan as Kara sucked a small mark right above her waistline, "Wearing that makes you hungrier for me than food? Good to know.”
