Work Text:
Lucy manages to drive herself home and finds Tamara studying in the living room. She decides to not pretend or act like everything is fine and instead cuts right to the chase.
Tamara has had a lot of people enter her life and leave without reason or explanation and now, unfortunately Lucy has to add Tim to that list. She feels incredibly guilty for allowing another person into the younger girl’s life who now won’t be a part of it.
However Tamara can tell something is wrong as soon as she sees Lucy’s face.
“He didn’t,” she says, “tell me he didn’t.”
“He broke up with me,” Lucy says confirming Tamara’s fear with a shaky voice. “It has to do with that guy who showed up and threatened us and other things I can’t tell you but I just wanted you to know, Tim won’t be around.”
Tamara looks just about as devastated as Lucy feels. She gets up off the couch and hugs her roommate, her friend and continues to do so as Lucy starts to cry. They stay like that for a while before Lucy pulls away, puffy eyed.
“Thanks,” she says quietly, “I’m going to go have a shower then try to sleep. I think I’m going to take tomorrow off too.”
“I can stay home with you too, if you want,” Tamara volunteers.
“That would be nice,” Lucy says then walks to her bedroom to grab a fresh pair of pajamas to put on after her shower.
The next morning Tamara gets up early and leaves a note for Lucy telling her she’s gone out to get them breakfast but first she’s going to make a pit-stop at the station.
Tamara wonders into Mid-Wilshire looking for Tim. She runs into Angela Lopez first.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” asks the detective.
“Where’s Tim?” Tamara asks getting right down to business.
“Um, cleaning out his office, he got demoted back to patrol for a while,” Angela says.
“Good,” Tamara says before storming towards Tim’s office.
She sees him inside the room taking frames down off the wall. He looks terrible. He has bags under his eyes, he looks like he hasn’t slept in days. Most of all he looks sad.
Tamara tries not to focus on Tim’s emotions for too long and instead re-focuses on her mission. She opens the door and closes it firmly behind her.
“Tamara,” Tim says when he sees her enter, “what are you doing here? Are you okay? Is Lucy okay?” he asks sounding panicked.
“Of course she’s not okay, why did you do it? Why did you break up with her?” Tamara asks, voice loud. “She’s a mess, she doesn’t deserve this, what the hell happened?”
“Tamara, it’s complicated,” he says which clearly does not cut it.
“I don’t care that its complicated, life is complicated Tim, relationships are complicated. But you and Lucy, you two are meant for each other, you both need each other!” she tells him.
“I just, I can’t be with her, not right now,” he says trying his best to explain it.
“Why?” Tamara asks again, this time more desperate.
“Just, I can’t talk about this right now,” he says starting to deflect and avoid.
“Well, I want to, I want to know why you don’t think Lucy can help with whatever is going on. She can help, she’s good at it. She loves you Tim, just let her back in, fix it,” she pleads.
“She deserves better than me Tamara, and maybe once I get my shit together, maybe she’ll forgive me, but I have to deal with this on my own,” he tells her.
“Not good enough,” she says letting her emotions get the best of her, “I can’t lose anyone else, it’s not fair, to either of us,” she admits, “so do whatever you need to do, then fix it, that’s an order,” she demands before storming out of his office and slamming the door behind her to help emphasize her point.
Tim stands in what is no longer his office and deflates. He hates that he’s not only leaving Lucy but that it also means he’s abandoning Tamara too.
He’s a terrible person and is really getting sick and tired of being reminded of it.
Angela waits in the hallway for the action inside Tim’s office to come to an end and sees a distraught Tamara emerge.
“I hate him,” Tamara tells the detective, “He’s an idiot.”
“I’ll make sure to let him know,” Angela says before giving the younger girl a comforting tap on the shoulder.
