Chapter Text

"It's been a while since we've woken my dearest brother Ao'nung, hmm?" Tsireya chirped. Her smile was large, causing her dimples to become more pronounced.

"Yeah..." Lo'ak agreed, slightly too love-struck to think straight. It was no secret the boy had a cute little on Tsireya. Smitten, as Kiri would tease with a flick to Lo’ak’s forehead.

Rotxo snorted. "He's gonna be pissed,"

"Well, this is revenge for him being so secretive," Tsireya rolled her eyes as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Seriously, I'm his sister. I should know who the special someone he's been hanging out with recently is. Like, what if it's a girl who secretly judges people!? I need to know!"

"Aaaaannnd, your revenge for not knowing is waking him up suddenly at the crack of dawn?" Rotxo remarked. Tsireya bobbed her head up and down, her long black ringlets bouncing with the motion.

"Fishlips definitely deserves this," Lo'ak added, momentarily playing with the beads in his hair.

"Alright, let's go," Tsireya giggled, holding up her sparkly, teal, sky-blue phone. Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss! was written on the case in a pretty gold and italicized font. She clicked the record button with her thumb.

Slowly, the trio crept up into Ao'nung's pitch-black dark room. Lo'ak quietly yelped as he tripped over Ao'nung's crusty, sticker-vandalized skateboard.

"Mother fuー" Rotxo clamped his large hand over Lo'ak's mouth to muffle him. Lo'ak smacked the boy's hand away.

Rotxo and Tsireya nodded at each other with a dangerously mischievous luster in their innocent eyes.

Rotxo flipped on the light switch with a satisfying click. The bright light illuminated the room, revealing all the miscellaneous details. Everyone blinked a couple of times to adjust to the sudden change, pupils constricting into pin drops.

"WAKE UP SLEEPYHEAD! MAYONNAISE! " Tsireya shrieked at the same time as Lo'ak, who screamed, “GET UP FISHLIPS, YOU UGLY BITー"

Lo'ak ended up falling face-first into a heap of shirts and sweaters that were too dirty to wear again but too clean to wash. There was a faint stench of sweat radiating off a white shirt in particular. He gagged and immediately rolled away. Seriously, those types of clothes were meant to be hanging off of a chair. Gross

Ao'nung shot up, and his blue eyes darted around the room in a panic. His pupils were pin-drops, and his breathing was erratic. His hair was matted down onto his face with sticky sweat. Honestly, to Lo'ak, it looked like a dead rodent had died.

"What the absolute fuー " Ao'nung's raspy voice was cut off by a groan to his side.

All three of the teenagers' eyes widened so comically large that Ao'nung wished he could've taken a photoーhis phone was cast aside somewhere in the clutter of his desk. Ao'nung didn't have to use his phone to lure himself to sleep last night.

Neteyam sat up and rubbed his bleary-hazel eyes. "Mmm...Ao'n, wha's goin' on?" he slurred, saliva dribbling off the corner of his mouth.

" Bro!? " Lo'ak howled. Neteyam jolted at the sound of his younger brother. Tsireya held one hand to her mouth and used the other to keep the recording going. Her tan face was bright red, and her doe eyes brimmed with tears as she tried (and failed) to contain her amusement. Her snickers and squeals still managed to escape.

Rotxo cackled loudly. "AIN'T NO WAY, BROSKI! CAUGHT IN 4K!"

Neteyam's face burned bright crimson as he hid his face in the soft blanket. "Eywa, shoot me in the heart and kill me. Please," he pleaded. Alas, Eywa seemed to have taken enjoyment in the ordeal, judging by the fact that no celestial goddess came to his aid.

Lo'ak glared at him, horrified. "FISHLIPS!? YOU CHOSE THIS, THIS GREMLIN?! " He pointed an accusing finger at the Polynesian boy beside Neteyam, who was currently being interrogated by his sister. Lo'ak retched and pretended like he was vomiting, mind conjuring up images he preferred to stay hidden forever.

Tsireya began to ramble. "How long has this been going on for? When did you guys confess? Does Mom and Dad know? In the future, will you guysー"

"TSIREYA, SHUT UP! " Ao'nung lunged for the phone, which was still recording the tapestry of events. Tsireya moved the phone out of the way and shook it childishly.

"Nuh-uh," the girl waved her phone, taunting her older brother.

"You devil! See, this is why I don't understand how people call you an angel," Ao'nung complained. Tsireya fluttered her eyes innocently, pink lips pulling back into a cheeky grin.

Lo'ak picked up a teal seal that carelessly lay on the floor. Neteyam adored that stupid thing, but Lo'ak personally found it revolting. The younger boy threw it, feeling satisfaction as it smacked straight into Ao'nung's face.

"Well, you needed to wake up."

Chapter Text

Neteyam stumbled out of the bed, bones audibly cracking. Lo'ak scowled, seeing how his older brother's clothes weren't his. They were a tad too loose for Neteyam's frame, and the gray shirt had a band's name bolded on it. As far as Lo'ak knew, Neteyam had never even heard of Pandora's Peakv or whatever. (The logo did look cool—Lo'ak mentally decided he would check the band out in his own time.)

"Look, we aren't together," Neteyam stated plainly, trying pathetically to salvage the situation.

Everyone looked at him in confusion—even Ao'nung, who seemed hurt. The latter was about to open his mouth in protest, but Neteyam shot him a glare that shut him up instantly.

"WHAT!?" Tsireya shrieked. Rotxo tutted, and Lo'ak's frown deepened.

"What were you doing with Fishface, then?" The younger Sully demanded.

"We had a school project, we lost track of time, I fell asleep," Neteyam shrugged nonchalantly. " Right, Ao'nung?"

Ao'nung nodded his head slowly. He was the worst freaking liar Lo'ak had ever seen, and he lived with Tuktiery.

"LIES!" Rotxo objected loudly, echoing Lo'ak's exact thoughts.

"Not lies," Neteyam hummed, twirling one of his braids and moving his gaze to Rotxo. "Though I'm sure you've had plenty of experience with fibs. It would be a shame if I told Kiri about your little science experiment…"

Everyone turned their heads to face Rotxo, who began to turn bright red. "Dude, c'mon!"

Neteyam shrugged again. "What can I say? That magenta pot housing your…plant… isn't the innocent rosemary."

Tsireya's mouth hung open. "Rotxo…" she tested. She had snuck a few leaves yesterday for her herbal tea…

"Tsireya!" The eldest chirped, cutting off her thoughts. "I'm sure Lo'ak would absolutely adore how you looked when you were fourteen…"

"Nope!" Tsireya yelped as Neteyam pulled out his phone from his pocket. After flipping through Ao'nung's old yearbooks, he'd scored the photo; Tsireya had blackened herself in her book ages ago.

"Aw, such a young emo princess…" A dangerous smirk pulled at Neteyam's lips. Ao'nung and Rotxo snorted, remembering Tsireya's…interesting choice of attire. For a good few months, black basked in everything the girl wore. Deciding to spare the girl, Neteyam slid his phone into his shorts pocket and moved on to his last victim.

"And Lo'ak," Neteyam leaned against his younger brother, holding Lo'ak's shoulders.

"The problem this one gets into is such a shame. Especially that one time when you snuck out of the house to go to 711 because you didn't eat your daily pack of blue Takis."

"Neteyam!" Lo'ak shrilled, memories of embarrassment flooding his mind. Tsireya curiously looked at Lo'ak.

"You were lured by the burritos…"

Lo'ak tried to silence his older brother by smacking his hand on his mouth, but he recoiled instantly after Neteyam licked his palm.

“Gross! Neteyam, shut u-”

"The poor public bathrooms were never the same again~" Neteyam sang. Lo'ak shoved him harder this time. Horror filled Rotxo's eyes, and his skin was slightly green as if he were about to reenact the past ordeal.

"Get out!" Lo'ak demanded, hastily looking at Tsireya with crimson-flushed features. Ao'nung opened his mouth to retort, to say this was his room, but Neteyam grabbed his arm before he could.

"Gladly," Neteyam flashed another grin. He pulled Ao'nung to follow him out the door, leaving the stunned and slightly traumatized teenagers behind them. Blue walls metamorphosized into dull white ones—the lights haven’t been working for a while, unfortunately. Instead of posters displaying famous swimmers that adorned Ao’nung’s room, sweet family photos aligned the corridors.

"How in Eywa do you have so much dirt!?" Ao'nung whisper-hissed once they were in the hallway. Baby pictures of Ao'nung and Tsireya innocently watched them. The chubby-cheeked, sloped-nosed, and wide-eyed framed baby pictures of Ao'nung and Tsireya innocently scrutinized them.

"I'm not called the golden boy for nothing, Ao'n," Neteyam smirked. "You know how people think Tsireya's an angel? For me, they say I'm a goddamn god."

Ao'nung whistled.
