Chapter 1: He’s a pretty thing on a high, high shelf
Chapter Text
Doc likes to think he’s had a pretty normal life. He grew up middle class and his parents are nice, even if they’re not home a lot. Once Doc was old enough to take care of himself, his parents decided they wanted to explore the world, hich was okay with him. They take him traveling during breaks, always come home with gifts, and they call him all the time. Doc also likes having the house to himself.
His school life is normal aswell. He’s a Junior in highschool, he has clubs he participates in, good grades, and friends. He pulls all-nighters, he goes crazy during exam seasons, he procrastinates so much that he turns in assignments right before the deadline. You know, normal high school stuff.
But the issue is, other people don’t think he’s normal. No one tells him outright, but he’s not an idiot. He can see it on people’s faces - the way they look at him in fear or with pity.
Doc loves robotics. At his old school he was the vice president of the robotics club. The president, DB, had taught him everything he knows, that’s why it hurt so much when it all exploded in his face. Literally.
TLDR: Doc is now stuck with prosthetics. A fake eye, arm, and leg. A constant reminder of what happened and how his old mentor is locked away. He tries not to think about it because he still loves robotics. He still loves building and coding.
He wishes that his accident never happened for a multitude of reasons. But the main one is he wants to be normal. He forgot what it felt like to be able to walk somewhere without being stared at. He wishes he could still be normal.
But one thing Doc wishes more than that is how his friends wouldn’t be so stupid. Look, he loves his friends, he’d do almost anything for them. Especially Bdubs. Bdubs has been with him since they were in middle school. Bdubs was there for Doc after his accident, after his amputation, after the court hearing, and after the sentencing.
Bdubs has always been there for Doc and Doc appreciates him so much for all of that. Doc would give Bdubs the world if he could; but there’s still times where he questions how much he should actually give.
Doc was staying after school to get things ready for the upcoming battle bot tournament. Yes, it was still three months away, but three months will be over in the blink of an eye. Robotics is the one thing Doc doesn’t like to procrastinate about, as it’s still one of his biggest passions. Maybe that’s why he’s got robotic prosthetics. He just really likes it.
It was an average Thursday night. This weekend they were going to start working on the actual planning and designing for the battle bot. He was currently doing inventory and writing notes on all the parts they’d need before deciding a design for their battle bot. Mumbo and Etho, his other two closest friends and club members, were out to get the supplies Doc requested.
Doc could feel a headache already starting to form behind his eyes. It’s not uncommon, he really should get glasses... Doc sighed, the headache was only adding onto the annoying sensations. Today was an especially difficult day, as he was feeling phantoms pains and aches where his skin and prosthetics met.
Doc set his notebook down to grab his bag, rummaging through it to find his pain killers. He’d finally grabbed the bottle when he heard a knock at the door and the door opening. Doc turned around, normally Etho and Mumbo just came in so who would-
Oh.
Doc stared as Bdubs came in. Behind him was probably one of the last people he’d ever expect to come here. Ren Mongrel.
Ren is infamous around the school. He’s known for a multitude of things, all good from what Doc’s heard, but it’s so jarring to see him in the robotics room and staring right at him.
Ren is what some would call ‘The Golden Child’. He was the definition of a good person. Like, helping old ladies cross the street and saving kittens from trees, kind of good. It was weird how stereotypical and cartoonish his good traits were, though Doc supposed stereotypes are based off of something.
Ren is… attractive, Doc will admit that. He’s about the average height for a male, probably around 5’9 or 176 cm. He has surprisingly long, bushy hair, again, it reminds Doc of stereotypical hippy hair. Ren dressed normally but the one thing that stood out was the fact he always wore sunglasses inside, like, who does that? Is that even allowed?
Doc was snapped out of his mental questioning when Bdubs stepped forward and waved a hand in front of his face.
“Doc? Heellooo? Stop staring at Ren! I know you’re gay, but-“ Doc sputtered at Bdubs’ words, lightly pushing him and scoffing.
“Dude!” Bdubs just laughed, not bothered by the shove, just smiling up at Doc.Doc decides he does not like the look of that smile.
“Well now that I have your attention! This is Ren.” Bdubs motioned towards the brunette.
“Oh, really? I had no clue.” Doc crossed his arms and gave Bdubs an unimpressed look, there’s something absolutely going on. Doc can feel it in the air and can see it in Bdubs’ eyes and smile.
“Uh huh, anyway, he wants to join robotics, he’s just such a big fan of you! Isn’t that right Ren?” Bdubs had a shit-eating grin that took up half his face, Doc always thought it was weird just how big Bdubs’ smile was but never questioned it. Doc just looked up at Ren, raising his eyebrow in question, it didn’t look like much considering he only has one eyebrow, but y’know. You win some, you lose some.
Ren seemed to also snap out of his staring, his face flushing as he stared at Doc. Weird, Ren was normally so composed, but it’s almost nice to see Ren so... human instead of the idolized version of him that Doc hears about constantly. He supposes he understands the feeling of being but on a certain pedestal.
“Right! Uhm, your work is awesome! Y’know I, uh, I was looking through your past projects and... and your past championships...” Ren tapered off towards the end, fidgeting while Doc just went rigid.
He’s not dumb, his accident was a public spectacle. It’s in newspapers and blogs, there were public records about his case so he shouldn’t be surprised.
He really shouldn’t be surprised but, he can’t help but feel like he was suddenly suffocating, like he was dropped in an ice cold lake. He knows that people can just look him up and find out and people probably have but no one’s actually admitted that they knew.
Doc hadn’t told anyone, he hasn’t talked about it with anyone besides Bdubs. And if his friends looked him up and found out then they never told him and never talked about it. Doc liked that, he wanted to leave it all behind him because this school was a new start.
It was years ago, so Doc shouldn’t be this hung up about it, but he couldn’t help but feel like he was suffocating.
“I-I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable! You don’t need to talk about it or- or you can forget I ever said anything. I just- the point is I think you’re super cool and that I really admire your work and would love to join your club and learn alongside you if you’d let me-“ Ren rambled on, clearly it was very noticeable how Doc was feeling.
Doc could hear Ren but wasn’t processing anything, at least until he felt a warm hand intertwining with his organic one. Doc blinked, squeezing the hand back and taking a deep breath.
Bdubs really can read him so easily. Bdubs always knows just what he needs, so he really can’t be mad about him bringing Ren here.
Doc looked down, Bdubs was smiling up at him, it was a gentle but goofy smile, it always made Doc feel better. Doc sighed and looked back up at Ren.
“Right, let’s just forget about that. So, you wanna join robotics?” Doc lets go of Bdubs’ hand as he crosses his arms once more, once again being reminded of his growing headache.
Ren nodded, “Yeah! It seems super cool and I’d love to be able to learn!” Ren wascute. He looked like a puppy when he was excited. Doc can practically picture the ears and wagging tail.
“Alright, do you have any experience or anything like that?” Doc knows that Ren’s in plenty of clubs and has done a lot of community service, so he wants to gauge where Ren is regarding his knowledge.
What Doc was not expecting was a wince, an awkward smile and an uncomfortable length of awkward silence.
“Yeah- uhm.. so ya see.. I’ve never done anything like this before..” Ren smiled sheepishly, fidgeting with his fingers and head lowered. Void, this was a mess, wasn’t it?
Doc sighed, a long and suffering sound, “Look, I’m really glad that you have such aspirations for robotics, but the clubs got a deadline for our battle bot. We can’t exactly stop everything to help a new member out, and it’ll only add stress onto us and you since you won’t even know what we’re talking about. I’m sorry. Maybe next year.”
Ren deflated, as if someone just smashed his cupcake in front of him. It was kinda pitiful but also kinda funny how expressive Ren was.
“Okay, but I-“ Ren started, but was abruptly cut off by a loud and annoying ringtone, Bdubs’ ringtone. The former flushed and grabbed his phone out of his pocket and answered the call. Doc watched Bdubs experience the five stages of grief right then and there. He would’ve laughed if it weren’t for the pure mortified expression on his face.
“DO NOT ADD JELLIE TO THE CAMPAIGN POSTERS!” Bdubs yelled into the phone before hanging up and looking at Doc, frantic.
“Scar is trying to ruin his campaign designs and Cub is just letting him! Ugh, I’ll text you when we’re done and meet you in the parking lot. Love ya, see ya later” Bdubs rambled as he backed out of the robotics room, and as soon as he was done talking he sprinted out the door.
Doc couldn’t help but chuckle softly at his friend's antics, smiling fondly before he was suddenly snapped out of his amusement by a cough. Oh. Doc had forgotten about Ren there for a moment. He looked back at Ren, who now looked less anxious and more.. frustrated?
“So, you and Bdubs dating or something?” Doc was shocked by the amount of venom in Ren’s voice, and Doc didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or cringe.
“No? Why would you think that?” Doc asked incredulously, but Ren just scoffed, looking at him suspiciously.
“He just said he loved you and now you’re smiling like a love-sick idiot!” Ren practically yelled, which caught Doc off guard, why was Ren so angry? Does Ren have a crush on Bdubs? That makes sense honestly, they were in theater together after all.
“You got it all wrong, dude. We’re just really close friends, practically brothers. I smiled ‘cause I think it’s funny that he has to reign in Scar, even though Scar’s the one running for student body president. He says he loves me in a completely platonic way.” Doc explains calmly. Ren relaxed considerably, as if a huge weight was just lifted off his shoulders, letting out a breath of relief.
“Good. Good, that’s good.” Ren repeated, but it sounded like it was more towards himself then towards Doc. Doc just laughed softly, raising his eyebrow.
“What? Can’t deal with the fact me and Bdubs could’ve been dating?” Doc teased, finding great amusement in the way Ren flushed.
“Well- I just!” Ren sputtered, his hands flapping as he tried to articulate his words. Doc found it hilarious and kind of cute. He keeps seeing parts of Ren that goes against everything he assumed.
He supposes it makes sense. Ren is just a human, just like him, of course he’d have his little quirks. Doc huffed, moving his bag to the side to sit on the table behind him.
“Don’t worry, we’ve known each other since middle school, there’s no romantic chemistry there.” Doc reassured, smiling as Ren nodded and slowly calmed down.
There was some moments of silence but it wasn’t awkward or uncomfortable, it was just silence. Doc stared at Ren and Ren just stared back. The moment felt tense but in a way Doc couldn’t comprehend, it wasn’t an uncomfortable or suffocating type of tension.
“Y’know, you’re not what I thought you’d be like.” Ren spoke suddenly, his voice soft, as if afraid of breaking the thin tension in the air. So Doc matched his tone.
“Yeah, you’re not either. I thought you’d be more.. confident, maybe arrogant.” Doc admitted and Ren smiled softly, stepping closer.
“Honestly, I thought you’d be like that too. People say you’re intimidating, scary. Which to them maybe you are, but you’re really sweet. You feel emotions and have your passions. You’re just you.” Ren sounded fond, he was so close now, just a foot or two away.
Doc doesn’t know how to respond. Ren sounded so… happy and so sweet. Something Doc doesn’t recognize. Ren looks at him for who he really is, like he’s normal. Ren makes Doc feel normal, like he hasn’t felt in years, a feeling he’s missed so much. A feeling given to him by a guy he met, like, an hour ago.
Doc feels exposed, vulnerable. Doc doesn’t know if he’s happy about this, Ren somehow broke down all his walls without even trying. Doc was too lost in his own thoughts to process Ren inhaling, then his breath hitching. He was too lost in his thoughts to notice Ren coming closer until he felt a warm hand on his face.
Doc gasped, not expecting it. He looked up at Ren who was now right in front of him, mere inches away, staring down at him with a look on his face that Doc couldn’t decipher.
Ren’s breath hitched as he inhaled again, leaning down towards Doc. Doc was frozen, he didn’t know what to do, he’s never been in a situation like this before. What was he supposed to do? What does he do-
“You’re so pretty, Doc.” Ren purred, interrupting Doc’s internal panic. “Your laugh is so nice, your voice is so deep, and you smell so good.”
Doc was frozen. Ren’s tone was so intense, much more intense than before. Doc doesn’t know what to do. He feels like he should tell Ren to back up, but does Doc even want that? He doesn’t know. He doesn’t know what he wants.
Doc doesn’t have time to figure out what he wants as Ren leans down and kisses him softly. Doc gasps, his mind felt like it was melting, his body falling limp as Ren kissed him oh so gently.
Doc was panicking, but his body wouldn’t move, Doc felt like he was submerged underwater. Doc doesn’t know what he wants, but he doesn’t have time to think. His body decides for him, his eyes closing as he leans into the kiss.
Doc felt like he wasn’t in control of his body, like he wasn’t the one making these decisions. Doc watches, feels, and experiences it all when Ren gets rougher, the man’s hands wandering.
Doc experiences it when Ren pushes him back against the table, whispering small nothings into his ear as Ren kisses down his neck. Doc experiences it as Ren bites down harshly on the skin that rubs against his prosthetic, Doc's back arching as he mewls.
Doc feels like he’s submerged underwater, that he’s in some sort of trance, that he’s trapped in his own body. Doc can only watch and feel as Ren kisses, bites and touches him. His mind a mess and body not responding to what he wants.
Doc’s mind was so far gone he hadn’t heard Etho and Mumbo come in, his mind so far gone he hadn’t heard them gasp and drop the supplies. But, not too far enough that he couldn’t hear Etho speak.
“What’s going on here?” Etho sounds angry, like, a lot angrier than Doc has ever heard him. Doc watched as Ren sat up, looking behind him and towards the door. Doc couldn’t bring himself to move, staring up at Ren and panting, trying to catch his breath.
“We’re just having a bit of a moment, don’t worry about it, we were just leaving.” Ren grinned, his voice smug as he talked to Etho, Doc’s brain fog was fading slowly but not quickly enough for Doc’s taste.
Doc felt so exposed, being found by two of his closest friends in such a compromising position, laying beneath a man he’d just met. Doc’s face flushed in embarrassment, gripping at Ren’s arms for some sort of grounding.
But that seemed to make the situation worse. Etho’s eyes narrowed at the action, scowling. Ren looks down at Doc with a smug expression, glancing back at Etho with a shit-eating grin.
Doc couldn’t even comprehend what happens next, maybe it’s because his minds still covered in fog and he feels vulnerable, but in seemingly a couple seconds, Etho crosses the run to push Ren away. Now being the one standing over Doc. Doc didn’t even have time to process how Etho got there so fast before he gently pulled Doc into a sitting position.
Etho’s eyes flicked over his form, his eyes landing on the bite marks littering his skin, his gaze darkening as he practically growled. Doc hadn’t ever heard Etho make a sound like that, he glared at Ren before looking back at Doc with soft eyes.
“Are you okay? That mutt didn’t hurt you, right?” Etho questions, the jab at Ren not going unnoticed by any of them. Ren growls in response, it seemed so animalistic, so raw, it sent shivers up Doc’s spine.
“Let’s go. We can go back to my place, Mumbo and I can help you. Let’s take care of that scent, hm? You’re okay now.” Etho spoke to him as if he’s a wounded animal, it irked Doc in a way. He was talking to him with such a weird tone, looking at him like he’s never done before.
Doc didn’t have time to respond as Etho pulled Doc to his feet, handing him his bag as he guided him over to Mumbo. Mumbo was glaring at Ren before gently wrapping his arms around one of Doc’s looking up at him with a look that he’s only seen him give to Cub.
It was weird and unsettling. Doc didn’t like how his friends were looking at him. He couldn’t describe it in any other way, they were looking at him like he was a trophy, like a piece of meat about to be devoured. It made him uneasy. They’d never looked at him in such away and it made him uncomfortable. Why were they suddenly acting so weird? Why would they have such a strong reaction to him kissing someone?
To be fair he didn’t consent and didn’t really want it, but there was no way they could’ve known that. Ren didn’t even know because Doc had suddenly felt stuck. So why did they care so much when they were constantly urging him to get a partner anyway?
Doc felt even more uncomfortable as Mumbo tightened his grip on Doc’s arm, he was saying something. Mumbo’s tone was sickeningly sweet, it made Doc’s skin crawl. This was wrong. It was all kinds of wrong. There’s a difference between his friends and Ren, Doc doesn’t know Ren. But he’s known Etho and Mumbo for years and they’ve never been like this before. So this sudden tone change made him nauseous.
There was talking all around him, he could hear their voices but he couldn’t comprehend any of it. He couldn’t focus on anything, that is until he felt his leg vibrate. He ripped his arm away from Mumbo, ignoring Mumbo’s heart-breaking noise. Doc pulled out his phone, his hands shaky, looking down at his screen and seeing Bdubs’ text.
Doc’s heart leapt, he’s sometimes convinced Bdubs is some sort of guardian angel or something. He always shows up right when Doc needs him to, and Doc really needs him right now.
Doc ignores the three people strangers talking to him as he rushes out of the room. Doc’s heart is beating fast, he can hear it in his ears, can feel it thrumming underneath his skin. He didn’t even realize he was panicking until he left the robotics room, practically running down the halls.
Doc could barely process how hard he was breathing, he could barely process the sounds of footsteps and shouts following him down the halls. Doc couldn’t focus on anything other than getting out. He had to get out.
Doc practically threw the front doors open, stepping out, he didn’t grab his jacket and it was cold out. Very cold. But something about the cold was nostalgic, something about the icy wind biting at his skin soothed a deep ache within him. A deep ache he didn’t realize was resurfacing. A deep ache he had been pushing down for years.
Doc stumbled his way to where he knows Bdubs parked, he didn’t think about how he must’ve looked to the others. He quickly opened the car door and clambered inside, accidentally slamming the door shut as he panted.
Doc couldn’t focus on Bdubs, Scar and Cub right now. Instead glancing out the window. The sight of Etho, Mumbo and Ren standing in front of the school, simply staring at him. It made him sick. Doc had to look away as bile burned the back of his throat.
It wasn’t until Bdubs cleared his throat that Doc looked over. His best friend looked at him with a confused and concerned expression.
“Doc? Are you okay?” Bdubs asked gently, like how someone would speak to a wounded animal, and Doc couldn’t even feel upset about it. Instead, Doc just swallowed and nodded, buckling up and not daring to look out the window or at anyone.
“Let’s just go home.”

Chapter Text
Doc didn’t sleep that night. He just couldn’t. No matter how exhausted he was physically, emotionally, and mentally. His brain just wouldn’t stop running, his thoughts kept coming and wouldn’t let him relax.
He just lay in bed staring up at the ceiling all night. By the time the sun rose, Doc hadn’t slept at all, he was sore and felt awful. But when his alarm went off, he got out of bed anyway, going through his morning routine in a daze. His mind felt distant, he ate an apple for breakfast before going to brush his teeth.
He felt tired, but also not tired at all, he was jittery but his mind was exhausted. When he started brushing his teeth and looked in the mirror, he paused. His eyes locked onto his neck and shoulders, the bite marks from the night before still littering his skin.
He’d been able to block out the memories from yesterday so far, just refusing to think too hard about what happened. But the fact there’s physical proof staining his skin, lingering on his body where others can see, made Doc feel sick to his stomach.
The sight of the bite marks still punctured into his skin made Doc gag. He turned away from the mirror; the unwanted memories of something that happened just hours ago sent him into a panic.
Doc doesn’t remember when or how he ended up on his bathroom floor. His toothbrush discarded, his limbs numb and cheek flooded with tears. Doc doesn’t remember much of his breakdown, and he’s not sure if that’s good or not.
But when he stands up, he’s instantly hit with regret. He’d forgotten to take off his prosthetics last night. His joints were inflamed and painful, the daze he was in earlier had cleared enough for him to fully realize his mistake.
Doc sat back down on his bathroom floor, taking off his leg and arm. He kneaded the swollen and red skin, hissing at the ache and stinging. He just stayed there for a while, today was going to be awful.
He should just stay home. His body aches, his mind is a mess, and he’s sleep deprived. He really shouldn’t go to school today. He’s not even sure if he could, everything is just too much, it’s all too much. Besides, his pain meds and phone are in his room, he can’t exactly put his prosthetics back on right now. Doc was not about to crawl back to his room. It felt too demeaning right now.
Doc sighed, a heavy and tired sound, resting back against the bathroom wall. He closed his eyes, maybe he was asleep, maybe he’d wake up and this will all just be some terrible nightmare. He can hope, can’t he?
Doc doesn’t know how long he stays there on his bathroom floor, just dozing off but never actually falling asleep. After his breakdown he’s exhausted, more so than before. He waits for his joints to stop aching so he can get up, deciding that fate wants him to stay home today.
Alas, whatever god is out there, that apparently hates him and wants him to suffer, has different plans for him.
Doc’s calm and peaceful atmosphere rudely shatters when his front door is all but slammed open. Doc jolts at the sudden sound, a shot of panic hitting him straight in the heart. But he immediately calms when he hears Bdubs yelling his name. Doc forgot he gave Bdubs a key.
“Doc! Where are you? I have to do campaigning today before class! Get your ass up!” Bdubs yells as Doc sighs. Either this is a last minute decision or Bdubs told him yesterday and Doc simply forgot. Both options are very likely. Doc can’t remember anything that Bdubs told him yesterday.
“I’m in the bathroom! Can you come help?” Doc shouts back, he is soon met with deafening silence. He’s confused for a moment before realizing how weird that sentence must’ve sounded.
“I’m not naked! I was brushing my teeth but my joints are swollen so I can’t get up!” Doc shouts again, clarifying his previous statement. Normally Doc brings crutches with him or relies on the walls to get places without his prosthetics, but due to his daze last night and this morning, he forgot to do so.
Doc didn’t hear a response from Bdubs, but he did hear the front door close and footsteps ascending the stairs. He sighed and leaned back against the wall, he probably looks like a mess, but he can blame the tears on the pain. What he’s really hoping for is Bdubs to not mention the quite obvious marks on his neck.
Doc isn’t ready to unpack that right now. Or ever, preferably.
Doc sighs, leaning back against the cabinet. His mind began to wander again, that’s been happening a lot since yesterday. He tries to focus on anything else but his thoughts always wander back to the events of yesterday.
He wants to push it all away. Doc wants to be free of the thoughts now plaguing his entire mind. It’s not fair. All he can think about is their faces. The lingering feeling of their eyes and hands.
His neck aches. The phantom feeling of Ren’s lips against his own, against his neck and shoulders. It makes his skin crawl. Bile rising in his throat as he can’t stop his mind from replaying the feeling of Ren’s lips and teeth against his skin.
Doc wants to cry again, he wants to throw up or scrub at his skin until the feeling goes away.
Doc wants to forget. He wants to forget the weird looks from Mumbo and Etho. He wants to forget how he wasn’t able to push Ren away. He wants to forget the fact he can’t decide whether he liked it or not.
That uncertainty makes him gag. Makes him spiral again. Did he like what Ren did? No, no if he did then he wouldn’t feel this devastating ache in his chest. He wouldn’t feel guilt and shame whenever he sees the marks lingering on his skin.
Doc can feel his breath picking up. He can’t, he can’t handle this. He lost two limbs and an eye, bedridden for months, traumatized. But he couldn’t even handle something like this? It wasn’t that bad compared to what he’s already been through. He’s so pathetic-
“Doc?” Doc immediately snaps out of his inner thoughts, looking up to see Bdubs standing in the doorway. Amidst his panic he’d forgotten he was here, Doc was so far gone in his thoughts he’d somehow forgotten his best friend was here. What’s wrong with him?
He didn’t have any more time to think about that as Bdubs crouched down to his level. Doc could feel his gaze lingering on his neck. Doc felt sick again. But whatever god was torturing him spared Doc just this once as Bdubs looked over at his prosthetics.
“You wore ‘em to sleep.” Bdubs points out, it’s not a question. Bdubs knows what happens when Doc accidentally wears his prosthetics to sleep. Because Doc uses practical prosthetics they aren’t exactly comfortable.
“You’re gonna either have to use your wheelchair, stay home or wear your infinite socket.” Doc sighs when Bdubs lists his options. None of them sound appealing. He means, staying home would be awesome but midterms wait for no man. He knows he’d be excused obviously but he hates getting behind on work.
But Doc hates his wheelchair too. He’s comfortable in it but it barely fits under the desks at school and it’s hard to get through the hallways with it. Plus the fact he’s always late because kids who don’t have an elevator pass just love to use the elevator anyway.
He doesn’t mind his infinite socket but he barely wears it so he’s not used to walking and moving in it. It’s super comfortable since it has a built-in gel lining but that means it’s not as structured and sturdy as his metal prosthetics. He’d probably need to bring his crutches and leave them in the nurses office incase he needs extra support.
It’s annoying but definitely his best bet. Compared to his other options it’s his best course of action. Of course, Bdubs seems to already know what Doc’s answer is.
“Alright, let’s get you to your room.” Bdubs says before leaning down to loop his arm around Doc’s back. It takes a bit of time but eventually they make it up and out of the bathroom. They remain in silence as they walk towards Doc’s room, it was a comfortable sort of silence, a slice of normalcy that Doc desperately needed.
Eventually Bdubs guides Doc into his room and to sit on his bed. Doc feels bad for making Bdubs take care of him like this. He always feels bad when something like this happens. But Doc knows better than to voice his guilt, knowing Bdubs will just brush him off or smack him upside the head.
Doc needed to get dressed before putting his prosthetics back on. He took his pain meds first, he wanted to just wear a short sleeve shirt like always. Wearing long sleeves tends to get jumbled around his prosthetics and he never really liked them anyway.
But he was suddenly reminded that his shoulders and neck were covered in marks. He suddenly regretted throwing out his turtleneck. He really didn’t have anything to wear that would cover this.
Doc sighed, he could borrow a hoodie from someone. But Bdubs was too small, Etho was his size but the thought of talking to Etho right now made him sick. Doc was running out of options here, he really doesn’t have many friends, let alone friends that shared his size.
He thought for a while longer before letting out a heavy sigh. There’s one person who he knows shares his clothing size. Doc grumbled to himself before shifting on his bed to grab his phone from his nightstand.
With a heavy heart he pulled up Scar’s contact and clicked the call button. His heart was pounding as he listened to the phone ring once, then twice, then-
“Why, hello there Doc! You never call, what can I do for ya, on this fine morning?” Doc repressed a sigh. Scar was too energetic for it to be 7am, Doc can practically feel Scar’s iconic salesman grin.
“Hey Scar. I was wondering if I could borrow a hoodie from you.” Doc said, he tried to sound completely normal, but even so Scar seemed to pause. The line was silent for an awkward amount of time, or maybe it was just awkward to Doc.
“Why, of course you can, my friend!” Scar finally responded. Doc was honestly surprised he wasn’t asking any questions, but he wasn’t about to look the gift horse in the mouth. He’ll take any good luck he can get.
“Thanks Scar. I appreciate it. Once me and Bdubs are done we’ll head over to you.” Doc didn’t wait for Scar's response before hanging up. He sighed and rubbed at his face.
The rest was a blur, Bdubs helped him get dressed and put on his prosthetics. Bdubs helped him pack his lunch and get his shoes on. Bdubs helped remind him to grab his crutches and meds. Doc doesn’t know how he got so lucky to have Bdubs as his best friend.
Etho and Mumbo were his friends. (At least they were, are? It’s all too complicated right now.) But Bdubs is his best friend, there’s no doubt.
Eventually, Doc is ready and Bdubs helps him down the stairs and out the door. Doc loads his things into the trunk (aka Bdubs did most of it) before getting into the passenger's seat and buckling up. Bdubs does the same before turning the ignition and pulling out of Doc’s driveway.
The drive to Scar and Cub’s block is relatively silent. There was the background noise of the radio, Bdubs always had the radio on. Mostly for updates around the city or waiting for a Ariana Griande song to come on.
Doc let himself get lost in the music, focusing on the music playing rather than the familiar thoughts crawling into his mind. Even humming along to the songs he recognized, yearning deeply for the normalcy that seemed to be ripped away from him in just one night.
Before he knew it, they were already on Scar and Cub’s block. The two lived on the same block, so at least Bdubs only had to make two stops when picking them up and dropping them off. It wasn’t long until Bdubs pulled into a familiar driveway, the two getting into the middle seats as usual.
Doc almost forgot about what happened, at least until Scar gave him one of his charming smiles and handed him the hoodie he’d asked to borrow. He could see Scar and Cub’s eyes lingering on the forsaken marks so he hurriedly pulled the hoodie on. Wanting to hide them from the prying and curious eyes.
“Thanks.” Doc said gruffly, the fabric was soft and comfortable, it was actually a great texture. Which was good since some hoodie textures Doc absolutely despised.
“No problem! Anytime my friend!” Scar responded cheerfully, though there was something else in Scar’s eyes as he looked at him that Doc couldn’t quite place. Regardless of that he made no other comments, which Doc was immensely grateful for. He knows just how curious and persuasive Scar can be, especially with Cub. So he was relieved when Scar didn’t push or ask any questions.
“Although, I do have a teeny tiny question!” Oh god, there it is. Doc should’ve known the peace wouldn’t last. Still, he supposed he could answer one question since Scar did help him out and so did Bdubs.
“Yeah, go on then.”
“Did you get a new cologne?” Doc blinked, that was not the question he was expecting. Out of every red flag Doc is giving off, Scar asks about cologne?
“Uh, no.” Doc says flatly and still utterly confused, but apparently so was Scar. His brows furrowed and he had a look of contemplation on his face.
“You sure? You smell like cherries, I thought for sure it was a new cologne or something.”
“No, I don’t wear cologne.” Even though Doc clarified, Scar still looked confused. And to be honest so was Doc, he smells like cherries? How? Why? He’s done nothing new or different.
“Could just be your replacement prosthetic. I’ve never seen you wear that one before, maybe it just smells like that.” Cub suddenly speaks up, pointing out that Doc’s wearing his infinite socket instead of his regular metal one.
“Could be, I guess, that’s the only different thing.” Scar seems to think about the explanation for a moment before smiling, seemingly placated by Cub’s theory.
“That makes sense! It’s nothing bad, obviously! It’s a very nice smell, everyone loves cherries!” Scar says, as charismatic as ever despite the early hours of the morning. Doc doesn’t question it, just hums and nods.
The car falls into silence after that, the radio still humming in the background, it’s not uncomfortable or tense to Doc’s surprise. He could practically feel Bdub’s gaze lingering on him every time they hit a red light or stop sign, but Doc very pointedly keeps his gaze ahead. Scar didn’t say anything, perhaps he simply doesn’t care. But Doc knows Bdub’s is practically itching to ask about everything.
Doc wishes he could explain, but he just doesn’t have the words to do so. Because honestly, he doesn’t even know what’s happening either. Everything is still so overwhelming and new, he’d rather have a further understanding before talking to Bdub’s about it. The last thing he wants is to make his friend worry even more than he already is.
However, Doc is soon brought out of his thoughts as the car suddenly stops. He looks up, a small pool of dread settling in his chest as he realizes they’re already here. Even as the other three unbuckle and grab their things, Doc feels tethered to his seat. Not out of fear per say, just, uneasiness. But he eventually pulls himself out of it, taking a deep breath before unbuckling and getting out.
He grabs his bag and crutches from the trunk, Scar and Cub long gone as Bdub’s helps him. Doc looks at his friend, wanting to say something, anything, to ease the worry that was practically pouring from Bdub’s. But Doc has never been great with words, so instead he puts his bag on and grips his crutches as he walks with Bdubs inside. Just before they part, Doc grips his friend's shoulder.
“Later. I’ll talk to you later.” Is all he can get out, but his friend's understanding nod helps ease the nerves still polluting his chest. Doc nods back, eventually letting go to head to his first class. He can’t help the way his eyes dart across the crowded halls, he still couldn’t face Mumbo, Etho or Ren right now. Not when the memories of what happened were still fresh in his mind.
He avoided his locker and the halls where his friends normally went through. Instead, taking the long way, dropping his crutches off with the nurse and took the elevator up to the second floor. His first class is history, which he normally hates because he knows nobody there. But today it almost felt like a blessing, at least his first class won’t be filled with as much anxiety.
Doc eventually makes it to class, he’s still far too early, the five minute bell hasn’t even rung. But he was simply too paranoid to wait somewhere else. And he despises that fact. Mumbo and Etho were his closest friends, outside of Bdub’s obviously, so the feeling of being uncomfortable with them nearly made him sick. He wanted to be around them, he missed them, the change of routine had Doc antsy. But he also couldn’t ignore the pit in his stomach.
Doc sighed, he shouldn’t be thinking so much about this, it’s only making things worse. He needed something to take his mind off things. So, with nothing else to do, he grabbed his phone, downloading and playing those stupid mobile games. It’s not like he doesn’t play mobile games, he enjoys the sorting ones or sudoku, but he needed something else, something he can play with one hand preferably.
Distracted by his search for stupid mobile games he could laugh at, he didn’t notice two more people entering the classroom. It’s not like he should be alarmed, it is a school. But, unfortunately, the universe still hates him. He hadn’t even noticed them standing in front of him until one of them cleared their throats. Doc jolted slightly, clearly caught off guard as he looked up.
Before him stood two people he was awfully familiar with but never really spoke to. But to be fair the whole school knows who they are. They’re kind of infamous, just like Ren and Scar are. Doc is realizing a bit too late that he should stop finding himself around people who gather so much attention.
Doc can’t help but feel the nervousness return, it’s not like these two are scary or anything, but they’re Joe and Cleo. Joe is the head of the debate club, known for making facts sound false and myths sound true. The only person who rivals their silver tongue is Scar himself. Cleo on the other hand, well, she’s a master at pretty much everything they try. Sports, theater, poetry, science or math competitions. She’s like a Jack-of-all-trades, if you need something done, they’re the person to go to.
Doc’s seen them around sure, Cleo one subbed in for a battle bot competition and he’s heard plenty about Joe from Scar, Cub and Bdubs. Apparently he almost had Scar beat during the student council elections. Maybe if Doc cared more he’d have gone to the debate. But he doesn’t, not really. Eventually, he sighs.
“Can I help you?” He asks blankly, not exactly polite but not rude either, mostly just tired. The last thing he needs is more problems and drama in his life. What he wasn’t expecting was Joe to suddenly beam like Doc said something revolutionary. Doc could only watch as Joe bounced in place before resting their hands on his desk, leaning closer.
“You are so cool, did you know that!? Well, you probably did, I bet everyone tells you that! But your coolness leveled up by, like, a million percent! You were already super smart and now you’re showing!? You’re totally blessed!” Joe rambled, still bouncing on his feet, smiling widely with eyes shining like a kid on Christmas Day. Doc had no clue what this guy was talking about. Before he could even try and process what Joe could possibly mean, Cleo spoke up, her smirk obvious and tone filled with amusement.
“You’re friends with Scar?” Doc’s eyes narrowed on instinct, how did she know that? They were friends with everyone pretty much but he and Scar never hung out in school. But before he could question it, Cleo spoke again.
“That’s his hoodie. It’s got his cat on it.” Doc blinked, immediately looking down and seeing Jellie’s (admittedly adorable) face staring back at him. He sighed, he hadn’t bothered to look at the design earlier, he was a bit distracted. He really should’ve known, this is Scar they’re talking about. Apparently, Joe found amusement in Doc’s resignation, laughing lightheartedly.
“I think it’s cute! You normally dress all doom and gloom so it’s kind of adorable to see you in a cat hoodie!” Doc wasn’t sure if that was supposed to be a compliment or not. He’s pretty sure it was genuine, he couldn’t hear any malice or mockery in Joe’s voice.
“Thanks. I guess. So, is there a reason you’re speaking to me or is it just because of my new choice in apparel?” Doc watched as Cleo and Joe glanced at each other, Cleo still smirking and Joe still grinning brightly. They moved in sync as they looked back at him at the same time, it was almost uncanny how well they seemed to read each other.
“Just came to say Goodluck.” Cleo responded, still staring down at him, something in their eyes felt.. off. Not weird but knowing, like she knew something Doc didn’t, or like they could see straight through him. Doc doesn’t know what that meant but the pit in his stomach seemed to get deeper.
“Yeah! You’re totally gonna kill it in your tournament next weekend! We’ll be rooting for you, m’kay!?” That pit only sank deeper. With all that happened he’d somehow forgotten he has a battle bot tournament in a week. In order to do it he’d have to be with Mumbo and Etho, they’d been planning this for months, he couldn’t just throw it all away. But what is he supposed to do after last night?
Seemingly oblivious to Doc’s internal struggles, Joe waved excitedly before grabbing Cleo’s arm and tugging her away. He watched as they sat in their usual spots. His mind still focused on how the hell he’s supposed to pull off this tournament when even just thinking about Mumbo and Etho made him nervous. Unfortunately, he didn’t have any more time to dwell, as the bell rang soon after. Mind still in a daze as he grabbed his things, his first class hadn’t even begun and he already wanted to go home.

Chapter Text
Doc finally felt his luck was turning around, ignoring the weird interaction with Joe and Cleo, his first class went by without a hitch. He was eventually able to get his mind off his distressing reality by immersing himself in his work. He wasn’t the biggest fan of history but it did help take his mind off things. Even if he was still put off by the interaction with Joe and Cleo, anxiety still polluting his chest, he tried his best to brush past it.
Thankfully, he survived history. Next was Home Economics, he actually liked this class, no one he knew was in there but he did enjoy cooking. Even if his partner, Grian, never trusted him with a knife or to even crack an egg by himself. Grian always said it’s better for him to do it, clearly referring to Doc’s lack of mobility in one arm. It was belittling but not the worst thing he’s been through, Grian trusted him with cooking on the stove and such so it wasn’t all bad.
Today, they made Alfredo and it actually came out well. He and Grian scored well and cooking had helped put Doc’s mind at ease.
Unfortunately, that peace only lasted one class. As the bell rang and he packed up, he remembered he had math next. Math with Mumbo and Etho. That anxiety that he thought was gone reared its ugly head. That sinking feeling only increased as Doc aligned his bag on and made his way, rather slowly, to his third class.
Scar was in math with him as well, there weren't assigned seats in that class so he could just sit with Scar. But something about that thought was bittersweet. Doc’s glad he has someone else who he can lean on for right now, but he hated this uncomfortable feeling. Mumbo and Etho are his friends, they’ve been through so much together and Doc cares about them deeply. But every time he remembers last night he can’t help the dread that creeps up at the mere thought of seeing them.
Doc spaced out as he walked the halls, he knew where to go, not like he needed to pay attention much. He’s not sure he could pay much attention right now. Doc hates to admit it, but he’s scared. Scared of Mumbo and Etho trying to talk to him, it’s a gross feeling. He shouldn’t be afraid of his friends. What happened last night wasn’t even that big of a deal, was it? Sure they weren’t acting normal and were too touchy for his liking but that’s not a crime.
So why does the thought of speaking to them make Doc’s skin crawl?
For a moment there, Doc really believed the universe wouldn’t torture him more. He was already having to face the two people he was dreading most, surely it can’t get worse. And yet it did. His previous assumptions that he didn’t need to pay super close attention to his surroundings was apparently false. Because Doc was soon snapped out of his minor meltdown as he bumps into someone.
Normally, that’s not a problem, he has great balance. Except, he’s still not used to his infinite socket, this prosthetic is for comfort not practicality. Normally, his metal prosthetic is tighter, making it easier to properly adjust to uneven terrain or imbalance. The infinite socket, not so much.
Much to Doc’s dismay, he finds himself falling, his prosthetic not moving like he’s used to as he’s unable to right himself. Just as he accepted his fate of falling, he felt a hand grip his waist, making him tense. Doc’s eyes immediately snapped up, looking at whoever grabbed him like some kind of Disney princess. His eyes land on someone all too familiar.
“Oh, I’m sorry for bumping into you, Doc.” It’s not like Doc has never seen Xisuma, they’ve just never actually talked, and definitely never been this close. So it was quite a shock to find out he actually had to look up at someone for once. He never truly realized how tall this guy was until now.
Again, Doc needs to stop finding himself in situations with such well known people. Xisuma is the fucking valedictorian of their graduating class. Not to mention how popular he is for his looks alone. Xisuma is tall and built. Doc himself is too but next to Xisuma he pales in comparison. The guy has piercings, a punk aesthetic and a mask covering the lower half of his face. If people think Doc’s intimidating, they practically shake in their boots around Xisuma.
Doc was so caught up in staring and cursing out the universe. Plus, whatever god is out there making his life into some romcom, that he hadn’t even realized he’s been completely silent. Only realizing when Xisuma clears his throat, raising an amused eyebrow. Doc chokes slightly, anxiety quickly turning to embarrassment.
“No, you’re uh.. you’re good. Should’ve watched where I was going.” Doc couldn’t look him in the eye, but he did notice the guy's soft smile. Or well, what he assumed was a smile, given how Xisuma’s eyes crinkled. Even with the mask covering the bottom half of his face, Xisuma was still quite expressive.
“Just be more careful next time, yeah? Don’t want you falling over and getting hurt.” Xisuma’s voice was kind and sweet despite how intimidating he always seemed to look. Though, Doc shouldn’t be surprised really. People call him intimidating all the time but never realize he’s only quiet because he simply doesn’t know how to socialize.
Doc nodded along to Xisuma’s words, still thinking as he looked up at him. Lost in thought about a lot of things. This guy was so.. kind. It felt like Doc’s anxiety lessened just by talking to him. It was a nice feeling, he almost just wanted to stay here. Until the bell rang, surprising him, and apparently Xisuma well, out of their stupor. They both seemed to realize just how close they still were.
Xisuma almost immediately guides Doc up to stand on his own before letting go of him, face flushed. Although Doc wasn’t much better, his face felt hot with embarrassment, especially when he noticed other students staring at them. He’d caused a scene in the middle of a crowded hallway, now Doc is almost positive there’s a higher power making his life hell.
“Well, uhm.. thanks for catching me, but I gotta go. It was nice talking to you.” Doc mumbled out, giving a little wave as he turned away, walking down the hall, grumbling to himself, still with a red face. What he doesn’t notice, however, is Xisuma’s lingering eyes. Simply studying him as he makes his way down his third class.

Chapter Text
Doc sighs as he walks to his next class, it was nice talking to Xisuma, he’s never really talked with him before. Not that he can remember, but he seems nice, and normal, and Doc likes normalcy.
However he can’t drag this out forever, he has to go to class, the class he has with both Mumbo and Etho. He used to be so grateful for that fact, but now the thought makes him feel sick.
But he’s fine, this is fine, Scar’s in that class with him and he can ask to sit with him. Scar was completely normal this morning, he can do this, he can do this, everything will be fine.
With one last deep breath he walks into the classroom, instinctively looking towards the spot he regularly sits with Etho and Mumbo. As soon as he sees them he feels the anxiety curling around his chest, making it hard for him to breathe properly. Regardless he continues into the room.
Doc tries not to look at them, but he can feel their gazes burning into his skin. He can feel how their eyes follow him as he walks past them and towards the back where Scar is sitting. Scar was already watching him, almost like he knew what Doc was doing, staring straight at him, grinning widely.
“Why hello there! Decided to change up your seating? Hm?” Scar leans forward, his elbow against the desk and his head resting on his hand, smirking slightly. Doc looks away, avoiding eye contact but he can still feel Scars intense gaze, “More or less, do you mind if I sit here?”
Doc was feeling kind of nervous, the way Scar looked at him was intimidating. Maybe he didn’t want Doc sitting next to him? Although that thought is quickly squashed when Scar responds, “Why of course! The more the merrier! And you Doc, are very merry.” Scar winks at him, his classic salesman smirk spreading across his face.
Doc huffs, he rolls his eyes and sits down next to Scar, grabbing his notebook and laptop from his satchel. He places his things on his desk, as he could still feel Scar staring at him.
Scar was silent as he watched Doc’s movements, still smirking, “So, wanna tell me why you’ve suddenly decided to change seats? You, Mumbo and Etho are practically inseparable.”
Doc freezes at the question, which granted, he really should’ve expected it, it is definitely a change for him. He should’ve known Scar would ask, he was cunning and observant, he always knew when something was happening. But does he really want to tell Scar about what happened? Just because Scar’s kind doesn’t make him trustworthy. “You can’t tell anyone.”
Scar hums, “Of course, secrets are my specialty.” Scar sounded genuine, even if his wording was ominous, Doc nodded in acknowledgment. He glanced up at the clock on the wall, there’s only two minutes until class starts so he’d have to make things quick.
Doc takes a deep breath, leaning forward to whisper to Scar, not making eye contact and not wanting eavesdroppers, “Etho and Mumbo are acting weird. They keep talking about my scent for some reason? They’re just, acting different, they were weirdly possessive and kept blatantly flirting with me. They’ve never done anything like that before.. and Ren’s worse…”
Doc explained in a quiet, shaky voice. He didn’t realize how hard it would be to talk about this, but he can’t help but feel better after finally telling someone about what happened. But what Doc wasn’t expecting was just how serious Scar became after his explanation, the brunette looked more serious than Doc has ever seen.
“You need to stay close, try to avoid them and stay with me yeah? I don’t want you to get hurt or anything like that.” Scar explains in an equally serious voice but there was a soft edge to it, it sounded completely genuine. Doc doesn’t understand why Scar suddenly got so serious, why he was so concerned over what Doc said, but it was strangely comforting. So Doc nodded, agreeing to Scars request, he didn’t exactly want to be alone with them right now anyway.
“Okay, but I-“ Doc started but then the bell rang, cutting him off and signaling that their class has started. Scar looks back at Doc, smiling softly, “We’ll talk about this more after class okay?”
Doc nods in agreement before turning to sit correctly in his seat, getting ready for class to start. He could already tell this is gonna be a long class…
Doc looked at Scar occasionally during class, pointedly avoiding Mumbo and Etho’s gaze. He hates this, he hates feeling uncomfortable around his best friends, but he couldn’t help it. They were acting differently and it weirded him out and made him uncomfortable, so all he could do was distance himself until he felt okay enough to talk to them.
Eventually he just decided to distract himself with school work, trying not to think about what happened because maybe if he avoids it it’ll just go away.
Yeah, that’s not happening but Doc can dream.
He was right when he guessed the hour and a half of class would pass by slowly. He couldn’t help but bounce his leg and pull his hair slightly the longer the class dragged on, mostly unsuccessful in his attempts to lose himself in his work.
But when the bell finally rang and dismissed class he let out a sigh of relief, hurriedly packing up all of his stuff so he could head to his next class. But as he’s unfortunately noticed, whatever higher being is out there, it apparently hates his guts.
As he was packing up the two people he dreaded talking to approached him. Doc really should’ve seen this coming, he was expecting them to try and talk to him, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t still nervous and panicked about it.
He could feel his heartbeat picking up as he stood up and was met face-to-face with Mumbo and Etho, their eyes following Docs every move, he felt like a prey being stared down by predators. He could feel his heart pounding and throat closing as he wasn’t able to meet their gaze. Doc swore his heart leapt in his throat as Etho spoke.
“Doc. We need to talk.” Etho’s tone was stern but not really angry or aggressive, just commanding and leaving no room for disagreement.
Doc’s grip on his satchel tightened, still unable to look at the two dead on. “I actually need to get to class, I can’t really talk right now, maybe later?”
Doc was really hoping that they would take his excuse and back off, but the gods still hate him. This time it was Mumbo who spoke, his voice softer and sounding more nervous. “Doc please, we just want to talk for a moment. It won’t take long we promise just please-“
“He said he can’t talk, so how about you just let him leave, yeah?” This time it was Scar who spoke, Doc had forgotten he was even there, looking over as Scar was now by his side. He was still sporting his iconic salesman smile, but his eyes were harsher, his gaze seeming dangerous. Which, apparently, Etho didn’t appreciate.
Etho glared back at Scar, scowling at him, “This is none of your business.” The brunette just scoffed and wrapped his arm around Doc’s back, probably because he was just a bit too short to reach Doc’s shoulders. “He’s my friend too, Etho. He looked uncomfortable and I thought I should step in, surely you understand.”
Etho just glared harder, clearly getting more frustrated by Scars words and actions, but before Etho could talk Mumbo butted into the conversation. “Scar. I know you think you’re doing what’s right but you don’t know everything. I consider you a good friend but you need to back off.”
Doc would be a liar if he said he wasn’t shocked by Mumbo’s tone and words, Mumbo and Scar are known to be close, so close people thought they were dating. Doc never expected Mumbo to sound so hostile while talking to someone he knows Mumbo considers a best friend. But surprisingly Scar didn’t sound as hurt or upset as Doc thought he would.
“And I consider you one of my closest friends, my darling Mumbo, but that doesn’t mean I’ll sit by and watch you and your little pet make this treasure uncomfortable. You should know this Mumbo.” Scar’s words confused Doc to an extent, his voice was smooth and sweet, but there was an underlying threat. Not to mention the sudden nicknames and insults towards Etho. And, expectedly, Etho wasn’t happy about being called a pet.
The other practically growled as he took a step forward, “What the hell are you trying to imply you fa-“ Etho wasn’t able to finish his sentence as a hand was placed on his shoulder, causing him to flinch and look back.
Doc was only growing more confused as he looked up and saw Xisuma and EX, why were they here? He didn’t have time to process it when EX, whose hand was still on Etho’s shoulder, looked at Doc and spoke. “You okay little thing?” It took a couple seconds for EX’s words to properly process in his brain, when they did Doc nodded.
“Yeah I’m okay, it’s fine really, it’s not that big of a deal.” He tried to reassure the others that this wasn’t that bad so no fights or arguments would break out. There were already people staring and he really wanted this all to stop. Luckily, he’s pretty sure it worked as EX hummed and let go of Etho’s shoulder but continued to look at Doc.
“Alright, let’s go then, me and EX will take you to class, I’ve got chemistry with you anyway.” They said nonchalantly as they motioned for Doc to follow them, Doc looked at Scar for a moment before whispering ‘thank you’ before moving to follow after EX. He avoided Etho and Mumbo’s eyes as he walked next to the twins, practically being blocked in by the two.
As the three walked out of the class Doc could still feel people staring. Then, Xisuma spoke, “Well, I’m sorry about that. We actually had come to talk to Scar about something but figured we could help get you out of that unsavory situation.” Xisuma’s tone was calm and soothing as he spoke nonchalantly, causing Doc to relax a bit.
“Well I appreciate the help, sorry you got dragged into this, I’m not sure why everything has become such a mess.” Doc did feel bad that he unintentionally caused Xisuma and EX more work.
EX just huffed and rolled their eyes, “Don’t apologize, it’s not like it’s your fault. They’re just being idiots. Now hurry up before we’re late.” Regardless of the harsh words, Ex’s tone was surprisingly soft. So Doc just nodded and followed them both to their next class.
