Chapter Text

“Zoro… Oh Zoro?” Luffy whispered into a sleeping Zoro’s ear, but all Luffy got in response is Zoro’s snores. 

Luffy tried one last time and this final try was surely gonna wake him up for sure. He climbed on top of Zoro and shouted, “ZORO! ARE YOU AWAKE?!” and that did the trick, he jumped and sat straight up from his hammock, making Luffy hop off of him. 

“Oh great! You’re awake!” Luffy said, smiling.

“Luffy, what the hell did you just wake me up from my sleep for?” Zoro snapped at him, clearly not happy being woken up in the middle of the night. “It’s in the middle of the night so you better have a good reason for waking me up” Not gonna lie, Zoro snapping and yelling at him caught Luffy since Zoro was always calm and quiet.

“Actually, I do, I was wondering if you know where that last piece of meat on the bone that we had earlier tonight for dinner” Luffy explained to him. “I woke up in the middle of the night because my stomach was growling and it woke me up”

Zoro sighed, “I get it now, you were looking for a midnight snack, can’t say I’m surprised but no, Luffy, I didn’t eat it, why would I anyway?”

“Because you loved it the most, almost more than I did if you ask me” Luffy shrugged. 

“Well, I didn’t eat that last piece now please let me sleep” Zoro turned over and tried to get back to sleep but Luffy just kept talking to him.

Luffy had a look of confusion on his face now, “Okay, so if you didn’t do it, then who did?” 

“I don’t even know why you’re asking me because I don’t know, maybe Usopp or Nami ate it or something” Zoro shook his head. “It’s gone now but I’m sure you’ll find something else to eat in the kitchen. Look, if you want, I can help you find something for a midnight snack” 

“That would be great, Zoro! Thanks! You’re a true pal, you know that?” Luffy said to him, smiling. 

Zoro sighed and gave Luffy a small smile, “It’s no problem”, he got up from his hammock and hopped down on the floor of the Going Merry ship.  

With that, Luffy and a still tired Zoro went to the kitchen to find Luffy something to eat for his midnight snack.

“Okay, so what is it in particular do you have the stomach for? I mean, the last meat on the bone is gone, so you’ll have to choose something else to eat”

Luffy yawned but he still thought about what he felt like eating. “Hmmm, I don’t know. I kinda want you to surprise me with anything because I’m too tired to know what I wanna eat” 

Zoro sighed and shook his head, “Alright then” he went into the fridge and decided to try his best to make Luffy the most delicious sandwich. Sanji should have been the one to make Luffy something to eat, not Zoro and yet here he is making him a chicken and ham sandwich on a long roll with lettuce, cheese, tomato, and pickles. He didn’t have to, he could have declined and went back to sleep but something inside him told him to help his friend out and not leave him hanging. 

He finally finished the sandwich and handed it to Luffy on a plate and gave him a drink of water so he can wash it down. “There, I made you a sandwich, is it to your liking?” He asked, yawning. 

Luffy yawned again and smiled, “Yes, it is, thanks Zoro! This looks delicious” 

“Good, glad you’re satisfied. Now can I please go to bed now?” 

“Wait, before you go back to bed, I just wanna say that you’re a good friend. You know, you didn’t have to do this for me but you did anyway, why? Because you care about me that’s why” Luffy chuckled. “Just so you know, I appreciate you, Zoro” 

Zoro’s lips curled into a small smile and his cheeks lit up red, he looked down on the ground to hide that blush, “Uh… well, thank you, I guess, I…. feel the same way about you too. Goodnight” 

“Goodnight to you too, Zoro! Bye the way, this sandwich is really good” Luffy complimented. “You don’t usually make anything so this isn’t bad for someone who doesn’t cook”

“A sandwich isn’t that challenging to make but thanks, I’m happy you enjoy it”

“You know what I’m gonna call this? The Zoro special! Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?” Luffy took another bite out of the sandwich. 

Zoro sighed and did a slight shrug, he really didn’t feel like stretching this conversation with Luffy any longer, he wanted to go catch his Z’s, “I mean, I guess it’s not that bad. Again, goodnight Luffy. I’ll see you in the morning and please don’t wake me up in the middle of the night like this again to make you something when you’re hungry, next time, ask Sanji” 

“Sure thing! Goodnight again, Zoro!”

With that, Zoro left the kitchen to go back to sleep and after Luffy ate his midnight snack, he went right back to sleep, everything turned out good because they both got what they wanted in the end.

As for that last meat on the bone, as it turns out, it was Usopp that was the one that ate that last piece hours earlier that night before Luffy woke up with an empty stomach, he had admitted it the next morning during breakfast when Luffy asked about it. He cared about his crew and their well-being, so Luffy didn’t have any ill feelings towards him about it since it wasn’t that big of a deal, he was just wondering who ate it. 

However, he did give Usopp and his crew a friendly reminder though, next time they had meat on the bone for dinner and there was a last piece leftover, he told his crew straight up,

“That last piece is mine for a midnight snack so please don’t try to eat it”

Zoro felt a heavy weight drop on his chest while he was drifting off to sleep, at first he thought it was something he dreamt or something but when he woke up that wasn’t the case, he heard a highly familiar voice shouting his name, it was none other than the rubber boy himself, Luffy, his captain, and for some reason, he was laying on him.

“Luffy?” Zoro quietly called his name, he heard the snores and realized that Luffy is fast asleep and fell on top of him after he rolled over from the hammock. Luffy was snoring and even talking in his sleep. Zoro sighed and shook his head, as much as he wants to yell at him for waking him up like this in the middle of the night, he knew that Luffy didn’t purposely do it to irritate or anger him. 

Zoro sighed and had no choice but to carry him back to his hammock and so he did, then Zoro went back to his own hammock and made himself comfortable. Five minutes later, just when he was about to go back to sleep, a heavy weight was dropped on him yet again, he looked down and see that it was Luffy yet again who rolled out of his hammock and his weight fell on top of Zorro once again.

“Seriously?” He groaned in annoyance after this happened for a second time, he didn’t want to yell at him then wake the entire crew up with his loudness, so he came up with an obvious idea on how he can keep this from happening the third time so he can finally get a good night’s rest. 

But before he could do that, a sleeping Luffy unknowingly wrapped his arms around Zorro as if he was holding a little teddy bear. Zorro sighed and shook his head, he hopped off the hammock with a sleeping Luffy clinging onto him and went to the relaxing couch to put Luffy on it but there was only one problem, Luffy wouldn’t let go of him, he was still clinging onto him.

“Great, just great” Zorro sighed and shook his head in frustration. “Now how the hell am I gonna him off of me?” He asked himself. He WOULD tickle him but since he’s made of rubber, he won’t really react to tickling and let go just like that. So he came up with a better idea.

With a sleeping Luffy clinging onto him, Zorro went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator, grabbing a piece of meat on the bone and putting it near his nose so he can smell it then finally let go of him and eat it. 

Guess what? When Zorro did that, it actually worked! When Zorro put it near his nose, a sleeping Luffy sniffed its scent and let right go of Zorro and was now sitting on the floor eating the meat on the bone, Zorro sighed in relief and shook his head, and as much he didn’t want to admit it, Luffy looked pretty adorable eating while he was sleeping.

He picked Luffy up in his arms and carried him back to their room, he placed Luffy on the relaxing couch, took Luffy’s blanket from his hammock and gently placed it on top of him. Zorro’s lips formed a small smile at him and chuckled. He whispers, “Sweet dreams, Luffy”. 

Zorro walked back to his hammock and hopped into it, he was glad he came up with a solution to the whole “Luffy falling on top of him” problem he was having tonight, now he can get his beauty sleep without worrying about anything or anyone interrupting it.

Zoro felt the poke of someone’s finger touching his face a few times and a familiar voice whispering his name, “Zoroooo? Zorooo? You awake?”

Zoro groaned and opened his eyes, I turned his over and saw Luffy close to his face, he gave him a glare after waking him up from his beauty sleep at this time of the evening. “What do you WANT?? What are you doing up? Can you not see what time it is right now?” 

“Sorry to wake you, Zoro but can I show you something outside? I promise I’ll make it quick” 

“Whatever it is, can’t you show me tomorrow?” Zoro rolled his eyes and turned over in his hammock. 

“Pleeease Zoro? I said I’ll make it quick!” Luffy begged and begged. 

Zoro groaned in annoyance then sighed. “Fine! As long as you keep your word, I’ll see what you want to show me”

Luffy smiled, “Trust me! I promise this won’t take long” 

With that, Luffy lead Zoro out of the bedroom and onto the deck of the Going Merry ship. Zoro was curious to why Luffy lead him out here in the middle of the night. Luffy then points up to the sky with a smile.

“That’s what I wanna show you!” Luffy says. 

Zoro followed his finger to what he was showing him, he looks up and sees the night sky but when he looks a little bit more, he sees a constellation of stars. He didn’t understand what the big deal is, stars come out every night so why did Luffy bring him out here to look at them?

“You brought me up from my sleep in the middle of the night just to look at some stars?” Zoro asked in an irritated tone. 

“Well yes! But look closer!” Luffy said excitedly. “You see that one that I’m pointing at? Those group of stars kinda looks like the jolly roger on our flag? Can you see it?”

Zoro squinted and tilted his head to get a better look at the group of stars that Luffy claims looks like the jolly roger on their flag of their Going Merry ship. “Luffy, I don’t see it, this is a waste of my time, I’m going to bed”

“No! Wait!” Luffy objected, gently grabbing Zoro’s arm to stop him from leaving. “Please stay for a little while longer? You didn’t even take time to take a good look at it”

Zoro sighed and shook his head, he knew this boy wasn’t going to let him go to bed until he was finished showing him what he saw. “Fine!” Zoro took another look at the group of stars that Luffy was showing him a few seconds ago, the more, he looked the more he finally took the time to see that the group of stars looks a little like their Jolly Roger. 

“Hmm, you know? I actually see it” Zoro says. 

Luffy smiles, “See? I told you! Isn’t it cool?”

Zoro shrugs, “I guess, if you say so, can I PLEASE go to bed now?” 

“No wait! I gotta show you a few more!” 

“Are you kidding me, Luffy? You said you’d make this quick! You literally promised!” Zoro snapped at him a little. 

Luffy held his hands up in defense and chuckled, “I know, Zoro, I know but I promise at the bottom of my rubber heart, after I show you a few more stars, I’ll let you get your beauty sleep and I’ll never bother you about this again in the future”

“Alright then, hurry it up because I’m tired” 

With that, Luffy showed Zoro a few more group of stars and started passionately explaining to him what they were and what they meant. Like the White Dwarfs, Supergiants, Star clusters, and so on. They basically ended up stargazing for a bit and as much Zoro didn’t want to admit, it was….. Pretty nice doing this with one of his closest friends. Last time he went stargazing was with his old late friend, Kuina and that was many years ago so doing the same thing with Luffy brought back so many memories for him but he wasn’t going to admit that as mentioned earlier. 

After Luffy was done explaining the last group of stars and basically stargazing with him, Zoro was relieved that he was done and yawned as he felt his eyes getting heavy and he couldn’t fight the sleep anymore, Luffy noticed this and caught Zoro in his arms before Zoro could hit the floor of the ship deck. 

Luffy smiled and picked up Zoro in his arms, then he carried him to the room and gently placed him on his hammock, he put the blanket over him as Zoro snored and was fast asleep. 

“Goodnight, sleepy head” Luffy chuckled, “I had a pretty good feeling you liked stargazing with me, hopefully we can do this again in the future if you’re not too tired next time” He says before hopping his own hammock and falling asleep himself.
