Chapter Text

Arizona, Arizona was the reason for their whole relationship the reason why they had to tell their families so early in their relationship. He guesses that they really didn't have a choice with the amount of people that were meddling in his relationship. Now that he's thinking back on it was he ever really happy?

New York is on his way home from Greece where him and Georgia just broke up. He sat there on a plane thinking about the past eight months. why did he have to say he had a crush on someone? He asked himself. The truth is he did love Georgia with all his heart, but Georgia is right the relationship sort of rushed. So he was on his way home to his kids where he can spend the rest of the summer with him. Before he got on the plane, he sent a text to New Mexico saying he can keep Rosie the horse. He also texted NYC to tell him and the rest of the kids to pack up and go back to their house

New York hated himself for believing that this one was it that Georgia would be the person that he went to spend the rest of eternity with. Tears rolling down his cheeks as he takes a sip of the alcohol that's a flight attendant poured him

Hours later, when the plane lands in New York. New York got off the plane. He went to the baggage claim when he saw NYC. " Dad what happened?" the teenager said, concerned. New York didn't say anything, he just stared at his son, or tears streaming down his face. Suddenly NYC is hugging his father. " I'm sorry pops, let's go home." New York City said, grabbing his dad's bags and his father's hand leading him to the car.

When they get to their house in Albany

New York went to his room, unpacked his stuff, and threw away the stuff beaver from their first date. He went to his dresser and he grabbed his wedding ring, and Rachel's engagement ring." oh Rachel how can I be so stupid no one can love me as much as you did" New York said, clinging to his wedding ring. Then he went to his bed, still holding the rings, and continued crying.

In the kitchen

" what's wrong with Dad?" Long Island asked his twin brother
" Georgia, and him broke up" NYC said sadly " what are we gonna do?" Long Island asked his older brother for a solution " I don't think there's anything we can do but give him space which means you and I aren't in charge until dad is feeling better" New York City, said Syracuse and Rochester were in the living room and they overheard their brothers talking. And of course the youngest to have questions for the oldest two siblings " Nicky, Long Island is daddy going to be okay?" Syracuse asked NYC didn't know what to tell his baby sister. So he gestured for her to come over to him "daddy just needs time" NYC said picking up his little sister and putting her on the counter. " Can I hug him?" she asked, wanting to make her dad happy again.

New York City was just about to say something when Albany came in." That might work. I just got off the phone with Atlanta. I can't believe they broke up. They were so happy. How can this happen?" Albany asked to no one in particular.

While her older siblings were distracted Syracuse decided to go up to her father's room " daddy it's me, Syra can I come in?" Syracuse asking waiting for an answer.

Back in the kitchen

Buffalo realizes Syracuse is missing " guys. I think Syracuse went upstairs." buffalo said NYC immediately ran upstairs to get his to get his baby sister

Upstairs with NYC and Syracuse

" Syracuse please let's give Dad some space " he said

" but I want daddy to be happy" she said, pouting

NYC had to try to resist his sister pouting " I know so do I but right now daddy just needs space. Come on I'm gonna order pizza and then we can watch a movie."NYC said. He grabbed his sister's hand and tried to lead her down the hallway away from Dad's room, but she wouldn't budge. NYC sighs " Okay how about this if daddy doesn't come out of his room in three days then I'll let you go in there and hug him and cuddle him all you want right now we are going to go have some sibling fun so we can give our dad some space" NYC said hoping his sister would agree to these terms. " Okay but if he's not out of his room in three days, you better keep your promise, Mr." Syracuse said. " deal" NYC said. Then the two went downstairs to order pizza.

Meanwhile, at the state house

Everyone has heard the news that New York and Georgia broke up. Let's just say Arizona was beyond devastated. Pennsylvania decided to call New York's house to check in on him, Buffalo answered.

"Hey kid, how's your dad? I heard about the news" Pennsylvania asked

" He's pretty miserable. He hasn't left his room since he got home."Buffalo explained.

" how are you kids taking the bad news I know you love Georgia" PA asked

"We're fine, we're just worried about our dad. NYC ordered pizza. I think he's just trying to distract us from the fact that Georgia is no longer part of our family. But we're gonna be fine."

" if you kids need anything, just call me,Ohio,California, Colorado, your uncles and your older brother(VT) and one of us will come over and and help out" Pennsylvania said there was no doubt that he was worried about New York and the kids

" We will. Thanks, uncle P." Buffalo said. (By the way, New York and Pennsylvania are not brothers in this they're just really close friends the kids consider Pennsylvania to be their uncle. Well not Albany because she's dating Philadelphia.)

" bye kiddo"

" bye uncle P" Buffalo said

Pennsylvania hung up. He hoped that New York would be okay.

Three days later

New York is still in his room in his bed crying when he heard his door open “ Hi daddy can I cuddle with you?” The voice sounded like Syracuse. For the first time in three days, he smiled.” of course, baby.” New York, said as as he open the blanket for her to climb in “ daddy you need a shower “ Syracuse said New York sniffled” baby I’m too depressed to take a shower” he explained “ Daddy you have to take a shower cause we need you to take care of yourself so you can take care of us” Syracuse said moving from her spot to sit up “ Sweetheart you’re too young to have this conversation with me why don’t you go play” New York said he knew that his youngest daughter was too young to understand what he was going through “ but I wanna be with you I want you to be happy” Syracuse said New York, smiled and hugged his daughter” I love you, but can you please go play that will make me feel a little bit happy okay.” New York said, faking a smile as he tried to get his daughter to leave. “ OK daddy I’m gonna bring you dinner. Later though.” Syracuse said.

” OK sweetheart. See you later. Tell your brother that you guys are not allowed to have pizza tonight” New York said Syracuse smile as her dad told her what to do.” yes, sir.” she said, as she left the room.

A week went by New York, finally decided to get out of his room and take a shower and take care of his kids and do some work in. He still miss Georgia more than anything. But he decided to ignore his heartbreak and put all his energy into taking care of his children and work.

A year went by none of the states have seen or heard from New York in over a year some states chose to ignore it and some more worried about him but no one had better to go over there and check on him they figured he was just taking care of his kids and working and didn’t wanna be disturbed

Colorado had always cared about New York hell he even was in love with him but he was always sure that New York would never return his feelings. When he heard about to break up he wanted to go over there. He wanted to hug New York and tell him that everything was gonna be okay instead he decided to give New York some time and space to take care of himself and the kids.

‘ it’s been a year he should be spending time at the state house by now’ Colorado thought

Colorado was pretty sure the only state that had seen New York was Vermont. So he went to see Vermont.

He knocked out in Vermont door “ I’m coming” vermont yelled Colorado waited a minute until Vermont open the door” Oh hey Colorado. What do you need?” The GreenMountainState asked asked the centennial state “ When’s the last time you talk to your dad?” Colorado asked Vermont was not expecting that.”Uh the Fourth why?” Vermont ask confused “ I just wanna know how he’s doing” Vermont immediately understood

“ Well honestly I don’t think he’s doing well. He’s denying that he’s putting all his energy into work and my siblings but he obviously is and he doesn’t really want to talk to anyone. I think the only reason why he lets me come around is because I’m his son.” Vermont explained. “ I had a feeling last time he did this at least I was told last time he did this is when you know your mom died.” Colorado said.

“ yeah but this time is worse you know he’s been sending NYC to the meetings the fed is so stupid He thinks it’s actually my dad.” Vermont said

This was true. New York had been sending NYC to the meetings. Most people wouldn’t be able to tell that there is a difference between the two of them except for the Northeast Colorado and California.

“ it’s obviously Nicky but isn’t he attending NYU?”Colorado asked

“ yes he’s at NYU and Long Island at Stanford, but I think he teleports home every weekend to check on Dad” Vermont said “ oh, you know Syracuse misses you.” vermont said.

“ I miss her too. I think I’m gonna go check on your dad tomorrow.” Colorado said.
“ yeah that’s probably a good idea. Honestly, I don’t know why anyone else hasn’t already done that by now I mean I know Pennsylvania told NYC if they needed anything to call one of us but I don’t think they ever did.” Vermont explained. They sit in silence for a good minute.” you know what I’m gonna leave. Have a good night.”Colorado said
“ yeah, good night”

The next day

Colorado woke up and got ready to go over to New York's house. He teleported over to New York's house and rang the doorbell. buffalo answered the door " Oh hey Colorado. Do you need anything?" the teenager asked " can I come in?"Colorado asked Buffalo have to think for a second" yeah let me just go get my dad let him know that you're here" buffalo said. " Okay "

Buffalo went to get New York" hey Dad, Colorado is here to see you. I think you should talk to him." buffalo said.. " fine I'll talk to him this better be quick." New York said begrudgingly.

Colorado's jaw dropped when he saw New York who had grown his beard out over the past year. His hair was longer too.." what the fuck you want." New York said.
He hasn't seen any other states besides Vermont in over a year. " Chill, I just wanna talk." Colorado said." come on in"the two walks into the living room" so what do you want to talk about?"New York asked Colorado “ I wanna talk about you” Colorado says in a concerned tone.

New York knew that Colorado wanted to talk about him. He took a deep breath and said, "Alright, what's on your mind?"Colorado looked at New York with concern and said “ I’ve noticed that you haven’t come to the State House and Table meetings lately and I just wanna check in and see how are you doing?” New York looked down. He knew that sending NYC to meetings wasn’t going to last forever.

New York looked up at Colorado and sighed” yeah,I haven’t come over to the state house and I have been sending my oldest son to the table meetings. I've just been busy with the kids and work, and avoiding Georgia”he said, his voice trailing off. Colorado picked up on New York's last comment and responded, "Ah, so that's what this is about." Colorado said.it out loud. “ Do you want to talk about it? It might help I know you tend to keep everything inside and you know that’s not good for you.” he said, showing genuine concerned

New York took a moment to gather his thoughts before finally speaking up. "I guess it would be okay to talk about it," he said, his voice filled with hesitation.

Colorado noticed this and
reassured him, "We don't have to if you're not ready, but Yorkie, it's been a year. I think it's time to talk about it." He gently placed his hand on New York's shoulder, half-expecting him to pull away, “ I felt like an idiot last year when we got together. I thought if we broke up, I would just go back to doing what I used to do when I was single. I didn’t realize how badly this break up would affected me in the worst part of it is, I lost one of my best friends.” he says, as tears start streaming down his face
Colorado wraps his arms around New York and pulls him in for a hug. New York stays still stand for a moment, then hugs back and cries into Colorado’s arms.

“Shhh everything’s gonna be okay York you need to remember to take care of yourself. I know you’ve been busy with the kids and work but you need to take care of yourself if you want I can stay here with you you and the kids for a while to help out” Colorado says as he rubs New York’s back “ of course you can you know you’re basically part of this family” New York said.New York, pulled away from the hug he looked at the clock. It was getting to be lunchtime. “ do go get your stuff then come back and I’ll have lunch ready.” New York said, hoping he wouldn’t say no. “ yeah, of course let me just go get my stuff and I’ll be right back.” Colorado said as he teleported away.
New York got up from the couch and for the first time in a while he genuinely smiled. On his way to the kitchen. He passed a mirror in the hallway. He looked at it and saw he had us that he needed to shave and possibly a haircut. So he went upstairs to his bathroom and grabbed his razor and shaved his beard. Then he called his hairdresser Alejandro and scheduled an appointment.

New York head downstairs grabbed some ingredients to make spaghetti and meatballs for lunch “ kids come here “ New York said the kids that were at home came downstairs” I need you guys to set the table please we’re having Colorado over for lunch and he staying for a while” New York explain to his children “ OK Dad nice shave by the way” buffalo said as he grabbed the plates and hand them to Albany.

By the time Colorado gets back with his stuff lunch is ready and on the table ready to be served the kids came running up to Colorado to hug him “ OK I’ve missed you guys too Now go sit down we can all catch up at lunch.” Colorado says to the teenagers and preteens

They all sit at the table and eat their meals and enjoying a conversation with each other” so tell me has the Fed noticed that NYC has been going to the meetings instead of me?” New York asks Colorado laughs and says” no he hasn’t noticed. It’s hilarious. Most of the country knows that it’s not you some of the country mainland or south, except for Texas and Um your ex knows that it’s not you” Colorado explains everyone at the table laughs “ Are you guys betting on it?” Albany asks curiously.“ Albany that’s not nice, but no Colorado seriously answer her question” New York said curious curious as well

“ actually yeah we are having a bet on it “ Colorado says. He was going to say something about New York coming back to the meetings, but he didn’t want to rush things.
They finish their lunch and Colorado goes to get settled in his room. New York goes into his office to do a little bit more paperwork.

New York was in his office doing some paperwork when NYC teleported in. New York turners around e see his eldest son. " Oh hey kiddo, what brings you home?" he asked. NYC looked at his dad q! I and notices Dad shaved his beard." I'm here for the update of what's going on in the state for the next table meeting."NYC explained. New York stood up walked over to his son, and said.

"Actually you don't have to go I'm going next time"

"wait really are you sure you want to go back to the meetings?"NYC asked worried about his dad."yes son I'm sure."NY said NYC hugged his father. "thank you, Dad"New York City said

The two stayed like that for a while then Colorado came in the room.

"Am I interrupting something?"Colorado asked. NYC and New York look at Colorado and pull away from there hug. "no we were just talking."New York said. Stepping away from his son. There was an awkward silence, and then NYC decided to speak up."I'm going to leave the room and see if the younger kids need help with homework or something bye."NYC says as he walked out of the room.

"Are you sure about going to meetings again? You don't have to go if you're not ready."Colorado said.

New York and Colorado got closer to each other so close that their lips could touch. Their lips started to connect and they started kissing

New York pulled away to look at Colorado” i'm ready” New York said as Colorado looked at New York his eyes “ OK but if you change your mind the day of the meeting you don't have to go.” Colorado said to remind New York, that if he changed his mind, he doesn't have to go. New York rolled his eyes.

" I'm not gonna change my mind. Besides, I already told Nick that I would be going to the meetings. Is there something that you know that may be a reason for me not to go?” New York New York asked.

Rado shook his head.” no it's not that it's just are you sure about this because like and then your ex is gonna be there and New Jersey is constantly making fun of you then and then there's Texas and you know how he is and I just got here and I want to spend some time with you before you go back” Colorado explain he was anxious about New York going to this meeting so many things could go wrong. New York smiled at Rado; he just realized how close they were standing as Colorado continued rambling about all the things that could go wrong with New York coming back to the meetings.

New York decided that the only way to shut him up would be to kiss him. New York put his hands on Colorado's cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss Colorado started to kiss back. It was soft and sweet then Colorado pulled away” what was that for?” he asked confused. New York stepped away and looked at him before answering.” you were rambling on about all the things that could go wrong if I go back and I just had to get you to stop talking so I kissed you. A lot of things can go wrong, but you'll be there. Vermont's gonna be there. My brother are there and I can handle Texas, but I just needed you to stop talking so I kissed you and honestly, I think I'm gonna do it again” and with that New York started kissing Colorado again the kiss was long and passionate it almost made New York feel whole again To be honest, he never wanted it to end

They pulled away from each other again” I'm gonna go downstairs and help the kids with dinner. I'll see you later “ Colorado said, and then he left the room. New York sat on the bed. He took a deep breath and started thinking‘ I’m ready to move on? I'm ready to go to meetings, but Colorado has always looked so hot. I wonder if part of him knew that my relationship with Georgia wasn't gonna last. How would he know that?’ New York thought. New York looked down at his desk filled with papers of all the things that he had to do. It's not like he wasn't behind on paperwork he wasn't. In the past year, since he stopped, going to meetings, he gotten most of his paperwork done working with his government and his state to make sure everything in the state was going well and taking care of his family. He got up and looked in the mirror.” I'm ready to re-enter the world.” he said as he walked out of his bedroom and into the hallway.

He went downstairs to start dinner. New York saw his family and Colorado making dinner together. The kids are smiling. He hadn't seen them smile in so long of course they always smiled when Rado was around. Over the past year the kids haven't smiled because they were worried about their father. New York just stood there watching his family ’ I should've married Colorado years ago kidding to think that Georgia would fit into my family when Colorado has been in my family for years’ New York thought to himself he looked at zone out and thoughts.

When Colorado came up to him ” you okay? You've been zoned out for quite a few minutes.” as the Rocky Mountain state spoke he sounded concerned. New York looked up at him and smiled.” I'm fine. I was just lost in thought.” New York said, reassuring Colorado that he was perfectly fine.

” Well, why don't we go down and sit down for dinner. They'll be ready in a few minutes.” He said it stayed silent between the two of them” yeah let's go” New York side, and then Colorado got up closer to him and kissed him on the cheek, which caught him by surprise.

After that, they went down the stairs went to the kitchen, and New York went to help the kids set the table as he was helping his younger two children set up the table. They were laughing and joking. He felt as if things were just getting brighter for this family.

“ Hey York, can you come help me serve up dinner?” Colorado yelled into the dining room.” yeah on my way.” New York said as he went into the kitchen. he helped Colorado set up the dinner and then he

Family sat down for dinner they laughed. They talked about everything and nothing and they caught Colorado up on what they have been doing for the past year After they finished up with their dinner, New York and Colorado washing the dishes” well the kids seem happy that I'm back” Colorado said trying to make conversation” yeah you know they're not the only ones who missed you and I am sorry for isolating myself and my kids for the past year. I just felt so stupid. you know? and honestly made me wish. I never let Louisiana talk me into taking off my wedding ring.” New York explained Colorado looked at him with sad eyes. He wanted to hug him.” I get it Arizona probably didn't help but I know you always have your wedding ring near you. You could've just put it back on and said you were still mourning your wife.” Colorado, which made New York laugh.” I don't think he would buy that may be pushy, but he's smart.” he smiled, at the idea of his feature son-in-law, not buying the fact that he was still mourning his wife and New Mexico's adoptive mother. (yes New Mexico is New York's adoptive son. I have a Tumblr post about it. And your stories will come to play.) “ could you imagine I'm sure New Mex would've stopped him considering how sad he was over his mom and your wife. Of course he didn't stop Arizona from setting you up with Georgia. I guess he just wanted you to be happy I mean, I did ask him about it. He said my father may be an asshole, but he deserves happiness.” Colorado explained New York laughed, and then said.” yep that's my boy all right how is he? I know you guys are best friends.” New York said. and chatting about other states. Then before you knew it, the dishes were done “ well I should get to bed” Colorado yawn and stretched” I'll check on the kids.” Before Colorado exit in the room to go to the stair. He looks back at New York and asks .” are you sure?” New York nodded “ they're my kids go to bed. You've had a long day.” and with that Colorado shrugged it off.
Colorado walked up the stairs to his bedroom New York watch him walk up the stairs, mesmerize and how the other states butt looks

` The day he found out New York and Georgia broke up was the day he realized he made a mistake by letting his boyfriend set his dad up with Georgia and not stopping him.
New Mexico knew that New York didn't put on his wedding ring from his marriage with his mother and pretended that he was still mourning his wife and the mother of his children Arizona was smart. He wouldn't have bought in that and he would've been more pushy with him trying to move on from his wife.
He thought his father would be happy with Georgia and he was then when they broke up Georgia had hurt his father New Mexico wanted to hurt Georgia, but he didn't Vermont told him not to. So he listened to his older brother. That didn't change the fact that he still felt guilty about letting his father be in that relationship.
He remembers one day during Thanksgiving when Vermont was gonna go see their father.

Flashback

November 2022

Vermont walked up to New Mexico, who is in the kitchen” I'm gonna go see Dad ya want to come” Vermont asked a few minutes for New Mexico to register that his older brother was talking to him “ No Dad needs his space besides, it's your first time back to the house since Mom passed. Do you really want me to come with you” he said, hoping his brother would drop it, but Vermont just stared at him for a while and then put down his coffee that New Mexico didn't even realize he was holding." That's not why you don't wanna go, come on tell your big bro what's going on?” he didn't realize how well his brother knew him.” I feel guilty” New Mex said, answering the older state “ may I ask why” Vermont asked concern for his younger brother wondering why he was feeling so guilty “ wow I don't know. I feel like I should've stopped Arizona from sending Dad up. I mean Dad was fine when he was single as far as we know I feel like it's my fault. He was heartbroken.” New Mexico said Vermont Smirked at his younger brother. “ I am about to tell you what Dad would say to you. It's not your fault if anything I think Dad would blame himself for falling for Georgia and not marrying Colorado. I would never force you to go see him but know that you do not have to feel guilty for something do I think you could've stopped your boyfriend from meddling in your father's love life. Yes, Do I think you could have stopped them breaking up? No.” Vermont said sternly.
“ thanks, but I should've stopped both of my boyfriends from making them rush the relationship, told them to introduce each other to their families
Despite the fact that their kids already know each other” New Mexico explained
“ it's not your fault that they broke up” Vermont said The brothers stayed silent.For a few minutes. New Mexico spoke up.”Thanks big bro, but.I don't want to go. for all we know, he could be mad at Arizona for setting him up with Georgia. Now here he is at his house in New Mexico, packing up a bag so he can spend a few weeks in his childhood With his father and siblings and nieces and nephews. Arizona and Utah.Were at his house spending time with him before he had to go visit his family.”Are you sure we can't go with you?”Arizona wines. New Mexico turned to look at Arizona and Utah.”Yes.in case my father.Is not happy to see you.”New Mexico said.Utah nodded in response understanding New Mexico's reasoning, however Arizona was pouting and not understanding.
“Ari, we'll be fine.You and I are gonna go to my house and spend time with my family.While New Mexico goes and spends time with his Northeastern family.” Utah said.but Arizona was still pouting.”Newie your family loves me. Besides, I can help your dad get back together with Georgia.!’Arizona said with excitement. New Mexico sighed. “ My love. I don't think my father wants to get back together with Georgia. He honestly doesn't remember how they survived without a doorbell. He waits a few minutes for someone to answer the door. That wasn't his father who would answer the door this time.
Unfortunately, luck wasn't on his side because it was his dad who answered the door.”Hey, kiddo.What are you doing here?” New York questions his youngest Son. Mexico took a deep breath and said. “Dad, I know.I'm a little bit late to come and check on you. I should have.Came over here as soon as I heard about the break up but.A part of me just wanted to give you space. “New Mexico said.
New York looked at his son knowingly.”I don't believe you that you wanted to give me space.I think there's another reason why you didn't come to check on me sooner.”New York said.Giving his son a knowing smile.”Dad Can I come in?” New York nodded and Let New Mexico into the house. “So where is Arizona?”New York asked.Wondering where his son-in-law was. New Mexico bit his lip before responding.’He's with Utah.I didn't want him to come.”New Mexico explained.Which caught New York by surprise, considering.Arizona goes wherever New Mexico goes. “Oh, really?”New York said in a questioning tone.

It got silent between the father and son.The silence was broken by Colorado walking into the room. “Oh, hey, New Mexico.I didn't know you were coming to visit today. “Colorado said, reacting to this pleasant surprise of his fellow western state visiting New York's house. “Yep, I'm here to visit. New Mexico was getting settled in his childhood bedroom. They stayed in silent after that Vermont left the room to go get the suitcases from his car to bring them into all of his children’s rooms while they were staying for the summer New York started making lunch. As Vermont walked down the hallway to his car to get the luggage, he ran into New Mexico
