Chapter 1: Mountain Dew Hat Man
Chapter Text
i. mountain dew hat man
A week after rear-ending Goldie Wilson Jr.’s Chevelle, Sherman Peabody reunited with his Jeep. The repairs set him back more than expected, but he’d survived on black coffee and PB&J for longer stretches.
The next morning, Marty McFly was on the bumper next to him at the red light.
“Here.” Marty retrieved a signed copy of George’s latest novel. “Sorry about your car.”
Sherman’s drab world colored a bit; he just remembered how much he used to love those Tales from Space comics.
“You headed to school?”
“Yeah.”
Sherman tossed his head toward the rear of the Jeep.
“Come on.”
Chapter Text
ii. doc’s bicycle
Howard Lomax ran away from home at ten years old. At the Lyon Estates billboard in the middle of an unseasonable November downpour, he found a bike.
He inspected the soggy yellow sales tag dangling from the bell, the tassels, the headlamp; he could go anywhere now.
But instead of leaving town, Howard went to the movies, Holt’s Diner, and scored one of those “cheesecake” magazines his brother hid under his pillow.
It was such a good day that he returned home.
He fastened a milk crate of peanut brittle to the bike.
Time to save up for that moped.
Notes:
Howard was the dad of the girl selling peanut brittle in a deleted scene in Back to the Future, and as he was kind of a bully, I gave him the surname Lomax (like Stinky Lomax, the outlaw who was hung in Part 3). He was 40 in 1985, so he’d be 10 in 1955.
Chapter Text
iii. after close at lou's diner
Once the life preserver kid left with his letter in hand, Goldie flipped the door sign over. He nodded to Mr. Caruthers’s nephew in the corner booth, where his date plucked the match from his lips. He stole a sip of her cigarette.
“We’re going to be late.”
“Then say you’ll dance with me tonight.”
Betty chuckled, snapping the matchstick.
“You want Biff seeing you dopey-eyed over a girl, cool guy?”
Match smiled. He snuffed out the cigarette. Headlights pulled across her pretty smirk.
“No, I want Lorraine seeing you swoon over ‘that asshole from algebra’.”
“You are an asshole.”
Notes:
Hi, yes, it's me back on my bullshit with another random-ass BttF pairing because I saw a pic on Pinterest that infested my brain with the idea of Match and Betty secretly dating. Fight me. :)
Chapter Text
iv. picnic
Marty tugged at his cravat. The heat, the smell; they wouldn’t have lived to sign the Declaration on July 5th.
“Someone oughta open up a window –”
Doc nudged him.
“Forgive me, gentlemen,” John Adams said, “but what colony do you represent?”
“Califor—”
“Carolina.” Doc smiled. “South. We are to bear witness for the record.”
Forty-five signatures later, the Second Continental Congress adjourned. Doc stayed to talk to Benjamin Franklin, but Marty couldn’t get outside fast enough.
“Why isn’t anyone celebrating?”
“Celebrating? There is a war on,” Lyman Hall bristled. “How do you suggest we celebrate?”
Marty swallowed.
“…Picnic?”
Notes:
That's my cue to go watch 1776 :)
Chapter Text
v. "one roll of the dice"
“I said one more roll,” Biff growled. “My map against your cash. This time we use my dice. Got a problem with that?”
Doc had a big problem with that. As his glare reiterated to Marty, If I believed in fate, I wouldn’t be playing with loaded dice.
But his partner made The Face.
Marty charmed the crowd with a bright tune on his mandolin.
“Show me seven!”
Doc tossed the dice. He shut his eyes as they skittered across the cobblestone.
The crowd cheered.
Impossible--!
“S-Seven!” Doc laughed.
Biff fell to his knees, groaning in defeat.
“All right!”
Notes:
The Road to El Dorado is a masterpiece and I'll never shut up about it, just like BttF. :)
Chapter 6: Black and Blue
Chapter Text
vi. black and blue
Marty awoke in Doc’s bed, giggling at the pleasant flip his stomach did as he sat up.
“Doc?” His hazy eyes found the blacksmith in question approaching from the shop floor. “Doc, I saw a guy get kicked by a horse yesterday.”
“That was you, Marty.”
“It was?”
Doc pulled the blanket down. Marty’s entire thigh was red, purple, and black.
“Huh.” He poked it. “Well, shit. Look at that.”
“Stop poking it.”
“Does it hurt?” Marty asked.
Doc leveled his brow, covered Marty back up, and reached for a vial and syringe.
“It will once the opium wears off.”
Chapter 7: Math Homework
Chapter Text
vii. math homework
Spike hung her head in her hands, staring through the eraser burns on the again-blank function graphs. She glared at her calculator; all the buttons panicked her. Wasn’t she told her whole life that she was expected to do math without a calculator?
“Would you like some help?”
Junior slid into the chair across from her, lowering his voice more to appease the librarian.
“I’m a whiz at graphs.”
Spike arched an eyebrow, swallowing an unexpected smile. He was such a dweeb.
“Is that the best pick-up line you’ve got, McFly?”
Junior’s eyes widened — curiously.
“Uh, w-well... Did it work?”
Chapter 8: Driver's License
Notes:
Storytime with Marty McFly: Part VI!
Chapter Text
viii. driver's license
“You already told us this one.”
Marty’s brow furrowed.
“I did?”
Verne nodded. “Last summer.”
“Father told you to walk Einstein,” Jules recounted, “and when you passed your test, you walked him by holding the leash out the driver’s side window of an automobile.”
“Tell us something exciting!” Verne whined.
Marty pensively sipped his cocoa, consulting the fire for inspiration. He snapped his fingers.
“Mm! What about the time the Templars threw me into the Oak Island ‘Money Pit’ for dropping the Holy Grail overboard while we were at sea?”
Doc’s head whipped in from the kitchen.
“You did what?”
Chapter 9: "Why do we have to cut these things so damn close?"
Chapter Text
ix. "why do we have to cut these things so damn close?"
“President Truman wants the Gadget tested before the Potsdam Conference convenes on the 17th of July,” Oppenheimer told them. “Let’s plan for a test date of July 16th.”
Emmett swallowed, glancing at the report in the meteorologist’s hands beside him.
“We won’t have ideal conditions until the 18th,” he said. “There is a significant chance we’ll have to postpone due to rain.”
“Some components of the device also won’t be ready until the 16th at the earliest.”
Emmett tried not to hold his breath as Oppenheimer lit his pipe.
Let it never be said the man wasn’t ambitious.
“How early?”
Chapter 10: Daylight Savings Time
Chapter Text
x. daylight savings time
The Pinheads’ first chart-topping hit didn’t come until their third album, but “Daylight Savings Time” was a hit, finally dethroning Mariah Carey.
It was only for a week, but man, it was a week.
They re-upped with their label for the next album, played Saturday Night Live, and talked international tour dates for the first time.
Soon, Letterman, VMAs, commercials for Pizza Hut and the Honda Accord; the same car they piled into for their local shows before making it big.
Nothing ever quite eclipsed the song that shot them to stardom.
But that was okay.
Marty missed the twins.
Chapter 11: Back in the Saddle
Chapter Text
xi. back in the saddle
“Breathe out, on three.”
Buford nodded.
In the light of a campfire, Marty flattened his hand on Tannen’s back. He repositioned his hold on the arrow’s shaft, straightened his arm, and took a deep breath.
“One, two…”
Buford exhaled forcibly against the yowl yanked from him. He grew faint.
“Son of a…”
As Marty pressed a thick cloth to the wound, his eyes wandered to the gash on Buford’s head. The ground was unforgiving when the Pohatchee’s arrow struck him from his horse.
“Still don’t remember me?”
Buford winced at the cold splash of whiskey on his back.
“No.”
“Good.”
Chapter 12: Marlene's Closet
Chapter Text
xii. marlene's closet
“Marlene, dinner –”
Jennifer paused in the doorway. Pop music pulsed from the computer, Marlene’s things were on her bed, but the room was empty.
“Marlene?”
A thud and subsequent “Shh!” came from the closet. Jennifer’s eyes widened, but her expression grew placid as she opened its door.
At least they’re still dressed.
Marty hadn’t been so fortunate in their college days when her parents came home early.
He’s gonna love this.
“Mom –"
“Is your ‘friend’ joining us for dinner, then?”
Griff parted a veil of blue sequins and pink fur with a hesitant smile.
“Uh, okay –"
“Mom!”
Chapter 13: Taxi
Chapter Text
xiii. taxi
Doc peered over Clara’s shoulder at the newspaper she was cozied up with in the armchair. A bemused smile gave way to a pluck of laughter; a nineteenth-century woman attempting a modern crossword puzzle was fascinating.
He loved seeing what words she applied to historical events, evolving technologies, and pop culture. The fact that “A SIGN” was “STOP” and not “OMEN” caused her much consternation.
“Clara, dear, ‘car for hire’ is ‘taxicab’, not ‘hackney’. Nine across is ‘equinox’. You’ll use that ‘x’.”
Clara sighed, smiled, and erased again, nearly putting a hole in the paper.
“Newspapers used to be thicker.”
Chapter 14: Park Bench Ad
Chapter Text
xiv. park bench ad
“Come on, Mr. Tannen!” Goldie Wilson, Jr. paraded his newest client through Courthouse Square, arms outstretched in the spring sunshine. “There’s a myriad of things to advertise your business on, and with my help, you can start right here!”
Biff narrowed his eyes at an empty bench. He could still see residue from the short-lived “24-Hour Scientific Services” ad.
Goldie’s son rocked from his heels to his toes with and a persuasive “Eh?”
“A bench?”
“A bench right across from Western Auto!”
Terry’ll love that.
“Hey, if it doesn’t work out, one hundred printed matchbooks on me. How ‘bout it?”
Chapter 15: Railroad Crossing
Chapter Text
xv. railroad crossing
Marty pulled Emmett into the brush as the locomotive chuffed past, sounding its whistle. His eyes darted through the foliage, car to car. His teenage mentor righted himself.
“You know,” Emmett groused, “we can afford a ticket. Freighthopping is incredibly dangerous and illegal!”
“The guy selling tickets works for Kid,” Marty said, spotting their opening. “If he finds out you skipped to Chicago to warn Arnie Benedict that the Tannens are planning to overthrow him as mob boss, we’re toast.
“You don’t want Tannens with that much power, Emmett. They’ll do worse than murder your father — they’ll destroy the country.”
Chapter 16: Blue Hour
Chapter Text
xvi. blue hour
The fuzzy shriek of a whistle permeated Marty’s lethargic cognizance. A ship’s horn replied.
Marty felt Linda lift her head from his shoulder. He pried his numb eyelids apart and, against the deepest hue of astronomical twilight, made out the black hull and funnel of the Carpathia.
“Oars,” Officer Boxhall croaked. He cleared his throat and tried again, meeting Marty’s eyes with a marginally more robust, “Oars.”
Commanding painful dexterity of his hands, Marty wrapped his fingers around the oar with Linda, made sure his mom had hers in position, and rowed on Boxhall’s order.
He hoped Doc made it.
Chapter 17: "I suppose it was destiny."

Chapter Text
xvii. "i suppose it was destiny"
“Draw.”
Marty hesitated.
Never considered the future, poor Martin, God rest his soul.
But he was; Doc’s name reappeared on the tombstone photograph in the saloon. If he didn’t do something, they’d kill him.
Marty’s vision reddened seeing Doc held against his will. The corner of Buford’s mouth twitched with an unpleasant smile, blinding Marty’s better judgment.
He fired.
The recoil kicked back his wrist more than expected, but Marty maintained his hold.
Onlookers gasped so loudly that Tannen’s confidence in Eastwood’s unreliable aim made him search for blood or an entry wound.
Doc slumped in Buck and Ceegar’s arms.
Notes:
Rest assured, this has spawned a 10K oneshot I'm already in the process of writing.
I'M SORRY
Chapter 18: Jennifer's GRWM
Chapter Text
xviii. jennifer's grwm
Marlene isn’t quite ready for the 999+ notifications she wakes up to on the first day of school. All of the comments, likes, and shares stem from a TikTok featuring her mother.
Jennifer had walked in on Marlene filming her First Day of School GRWM last night. To Marlene’s surprise, her mom decided to “show her how it’s done”, and they had a great time putting Jennifer in the spotlight while she recreated her high school looks with Marlene’s modern fashion.
It might already be one of Marlene’s favorite memories with her mom.
It seems social media likes it, too.
Chapter 19: Burger King Crown
Chapter Text
xix. burger king crown
Marty stared into the gleaming rubies of “his” crown.
“I’m not…” He laughed. “I can’t be—“
“You are,” the Queen, his “mother” said. “For months, we have never lost hope that you would return to us.”
Marty swallowed, eyeing “his” portrait. He certainly resembled the missing Prince of the Hill, but the closest Marty had ever come to being royalty was wearing a Burger King crown while eating a Whopper Jr.
He took Doc aside.
“Is that the guy?”
“That we hit with the DeLorean when we got here?” Doc murmured as calmly as possible. “Oh, yeah. That’s him.”
Chapter 20: "You're Fired!"
Chapter Text
xx. "you're fired!"
Foot up on the coffee table, Jennifer dabbed at the wide gash on her right knee with peroxide and a cotton ball. It was healing, but she wished her limp had improved a bit more a week removed from the accident.
Marty’s hand had five more weeks in a cast. The monotone mental static from the concussion lingered. While they were assured he’d fully recover, his thoughts still cut in and out, noticeably delaying and hindering his speech.
Like a broken record.
“Jen? I’m sorry.”
She squeezed peroxide into the center of the wound.
Her lips thinned.
“I know, Marty.”
Chapter 21: The Brown Estate
Chapter Text
xxi. the brown estate
For the last two months, when Emmett went to work at the courthouse after school, he swam through angry tides of unemployed, homeless, sometimes starving victims of the stock market crash.
They resented him – for every meal he had, every night he slept in a warm bed. For being untouched by this generation-defining ruin.
Little did they know his father was scrambling to save their home by Christmas.
Emmett was already packing.
His mother defiantly donned her pearls and bought fresh-cut flowers for the foyer.
“We’re not going anywhere,” she said, arranging the peonies and clover. “This is our home.”
Chapter 22: Jam Session
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
xxii. jam session
“Thanks for stopping by, Doc,” Marty said as his bandmates shook the scientist’s hand. “I’d catch lunch, but we’ve gotta do this.”
“Not at all,” Doc said genially. “I’m the one that flew in two days early. This is for that contest, yes?”
Marty nodded, gesturing to the crew putting the finishing touches on the set.
“Yeah, some lucky kid won a jam session with The Pinheads,” he laughed, picking up his guitar.
“What’s the kid’s name?”
Marty picked up the Mountain Dew sitting on his itinerary. He squinted at the name obscured by the lime green ring.
“Gerard something?”
Notes:
Yes, "Gerard" is Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. I placed this drabble about 1994, when he would have been about 16/17. "Helena" is one of my favorite dopamine kicks to this day, especially when I'm driving to work and need all that power to amp me up for the day. :)
Chapter 23: Family Ties
Chapter Text
xxiii. family ties
“Linda, you can barely tell –”
“No, Dad, you can! I run a vintage French boutique,” she said, nearly tripping on the hem of her wedding dress to step back and study the shades of their ties again. “I think I know the difference between mauve” – she gestured to Dave and Marty, then George – “and aubergine! You stick out like a sore thumb!”
“Can’t Father of the Bride’s be… distinctive?” Marty asked.
“Not that distinctive!”
“Now that you mention it,” Dave said of his tie, “this is more of a mulberry.”
“Oh my God, this cannot be happening to me…”
Chapter 24: "I think he took his wallet."
Chapter Text
xiv. "i think he took his wallet."
Coming out of the lunch line, Lester spotted Biff and his cronies at the second-closest table, glaring daggers at George McFly sitting with Lorraine Baines across the aisle.
He heard the kid that caused a ruckus last week hadn’t been seen since the dance. There was a rumor Biff hit him with his car, but no one had been brave enough to broach the subject.
Lester anticipated cowering from Biff’s anger tomorrow; Mark Dixon already got walloped today.
Clearing his throat, Lester tugged his sweater vest straight, smiled at Biff, and asked, “Did you retrieve your wallet?”
“No, I didn’t!”
Chapter 25: Timebomb
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
xv. timebomb
Marty squirmed when his evil counterpart dropped the watch in his lap.
“We’re on the same side of the mirror,” No Pines Marty said. “Every clock you’ve laid eyes on has been counting down to the moment you become me.”
Marty froze. They were all digital; he wouldn’t notice the seconds winding backward.
Restaurant – 12:56.
Bank – 9:17.
(He wasn’t seeing things when it changed to 9:16; he thought part of the “8” was burned out.)
Microwave – 2:00.
Now – 00:01:15.
“I’ll never be you,” Marty spat. “You let the Doc die.”
“No,” No Pines Marty admonished with a chuckle. “You did.”

Marty glanced from Jennifer’s smirk to the tape.
Way to be subtle, Linda.
“Did we really give this out as our favor?”
Chapter 27: Spiked Punch
Chapter Text
xvii. spiked punch
“It’s not punch, it’s cider.”
Jennifer raised her eyebrows at Marlene.
“All right, where did you get the vodka to spike the cider?”
Marty held his breath out of the corner of her eye in a miserable attempt to hide his amusement. Jennifer reprimanded him with an expectant glare, but he hung his head and turned away, cracking a bigger smile.
Marlene, thankfully, still had her eyes down.
“Honestly, Marlene, Thanksgiving?” Jennifer huffed. “Where did you get it?”
“From Jules.”
Marty spun back around. He and Jennifer gaped at one another.
“You got it from Jules?”
“It was his idea!”
Chapter 28: Halloween
Chapter Text
xviii. halloween
Marty’s feet stuttered to a stop at the foot of the driveway.
“Holy sh —“
Jennifer elbowed him.
The vibrant orange leaves of the sugar maples framed an elegantly restored black-and-white colonial up the path lined with jack-o-lanterns and marigolds.
Ivory pillar candles glowed in each window, a lush wreathe with wide ribbons and white gourds hung on the front door, and the heavenly scents of roast, pie, and hot chocolate greeted them at the porch stairs.
“This is Griff’s house?”
“Mhm.” Marlene pulled the baggy sleeves of her sweater up and rang the doorbell. “His mom has a blog.”
Chapter 29: Greg AND Craig
Chapter Text
xix. greg AND craig
Greg is an ode to the classics — Coca-Cola, red roses, bold. He rolls out the red carpet just for her, and no one else is allowed to set foot on it.
Craig is simpler than that, more laidback. The kind to hold buttercups under her chin, laugh, and follow her around the carnival carrying her popcorn and a balloon for himself.
But the third triplet, Paul, embodies the stars and has sapphires for eyes. He gives her blue hydrangeas — a bunch of rare, small moments that make up a bigger love.
She basks in his cool hue and feels warm.
Chapter 30: Slacking
Chapter Text
xxx. slacking
“Mr. Strickland calls everyone a slacker,” George chuckled, collecting Marty outside the office after his parent-teacher conference with the principal. He pushed his glasses up his nose. “He thinks everyone is like that.”
Marty said nothing.
His dad was like that.
George had no ambition, no drive, no dreams. He just… existed. And he didn’t care enough to break the cycle. Meanwhile, the son in his shadow felt so trapped he was frantic for anything that meant he wouldn’t become his father.
Marty opened the Nova’s passenger door, brushing peanut brittle off the seat.
Maybe Strickland saw something he couldn’t.
Chapter 31: Pepsi Free (Free Day!)
Notes:
And thus another McFly July comes to an end! BUT it has not for the summer; I am going to go back and do McFly July 2021 through August because I missed it in 2021, I'm enjoying the little break these drabbles and moodboards give me in a day, and they are helping me immensely to get through my least favorite time of the year. So! Marty will be back tomorrow with "The Boy Who Leapt Through Time a Third Time." :)
Thanks for hosting, @mjf-af!
Chapter Text
xxxi. pepsi free (free day!)
“I never imagined I’d get to sit in front of my own fireplace again,” Clara quipped as she took up her armchair and book.
Doc peered through the curtains to the backyard. Marty and Verne were hard at work preparing a proper storytelling campfire before sundown while Jules enlisted Einstein to pitch the tent.
“You’d think they’d had enough of stories ‘round the fire after all I’ve told them,” Doc said. He thought the Nintendo would have more mileage on it by now.
“And when Marty runs out of stories, they’ll make him start over. Just like they did you.”
