Rose Clippings

Summary:

Kagome and Kagura live with their mother in a woodland cottage, free from the grime of the large city, so when a knock is heard at their door in the dead of winter, they can't imagine who it could be. Or how their visitor will change their lives forever.

Notes:

A little fairy tale AU anyone?

Chapter 1: Bilious

Chapter Text

Snarls could be heard throughout the night, Emiko holding her two daughters close as they shuddered in fear.

"What is it, Mama?" Kagome asked, sneaking a glance toward the snow-covered window. "It sounds angry."

"I'm not sure, my sweet. But don't worry, we're safe in here." She ran her fingers through Kagome's hair.

"I'll protect you," Kagura said, holding a stick towards the door even as her hand trembled. Adoration shone in Kagome's eyes, but she immediately wrapped her arms around her sister.

"You're not going outside," she said, hugging her tightly. Kagura opened her mouth to protest, but Kagome shook her head. "It's too dangerous."

"But I know all the animals in the forest!" she said, still brandishing her stick.

Emiko pulled them closer. "If the creature is hurt, you can help them tomorrow. But for now—" She trailed off as a blustery wind shook the cottage, the girls yelping and burying their faces against their mother.

The storm had come out of nowhere, covering the forest in eerie silence much earlier than they were used to. Emiko had heard rumours of war circulating through the merchants in town, but they had confidence in their queen, along with the crown prince, so she'd paid it no mind, once again thankful that their home was so far removed.

The girls lay down, hands clutching their mother's dress, but Kagome glanced out the window again, idly rubbing her chest.

"What's wrong?" Kagura asked.

Kagome frowned, shifting uncomfortably. "My chest hurts. Like someone's in trouble." Her sister grabbed her stick, but Emiko plucked it out of her fingers.

"Tomorrow," she said firmly.

Chapter 2: Lapidary

Chapter Text

"Come outside with me."

Kagome chuckled, sweeping the last of the dirt out the front door, Kagura currently sitting in a tree. "Why?"

"Because the sun is finally shining, and you could use the fresh air," Kagura said. Kagome sighed, gazing out at the brightly coloured leaves. Autumn was upon them, and the forest had raised its branches to meet it, only the tips of the trees still sporting green leaves.

"Please?"

Kagome laughed outright at her sister's wide eyes. "That kind of begging only worked when we were kids."

Kagura flashed her a grin, hopping gracefully from her perch. "I seem to remember you agreeing to make that special mushroom stew last week because of it."

"Mama wanted it too!"

Kagura grabbed her hand, tugging it softly but still giving her the option to pull away. "Still worked."

Leaning her broom against the doorway, Kagome let her sister drag her out of the cottage. It wasn't that she didn't like being outside, the forest greeting her with magnificent sights every time she was, but the tightness of her chest always worsened the further she went.

She couldn't remember a time when it hadn't been there, but Kagura swore it had started the night when they'd all been huddled in Mama's bed nearly 20 years prior.

The forest was filled with creatures, but nothing had ever sounded like the one they'd heard that night. There was a level of anguish Kagome had never experienced before, and the constant gnawing kept her from venturing too far away from home.

Chapter 3: Doughty

Chapter Text

One of the reasons Kagome didn't like to venture too far from the cottage was the barrier she'd put around it. Mama didn't have any spiritual powers, but she had an extensive collection of scrolls that she'd given Kagome at an early age.

The writing was ancient but easily decipherable, and she'd devoured every word. It had explicitly shown paintings of a bow and arrow, but she'd been too young to build one, so by the time she could, Kagome had been able to focus her power through any weapon available.

Her bow was her best weapon, but throwing a reiki-infused rock or stick had its advantages, too.

Kagura linked their arms, dragging Kagome through the trees. The barrier sizzled over their skin as they stepped through it, the air suddenly fresher, the crunch of leaves under their feet louder.

Kagome gave her sister a sideways glance. She was always worried about using her power around her, considering her full youkai status, but Kagura was somehow immune.

At least to the protective spells.

There was still a noticeable scar on Kagura's back from when Kagome had first started using offensive reiki and had miscalculated while hunting. Kagura had never blamed her for it, especially with her rapid healing abilities, but it had been a year before Kagome had attempted it again.

Kagome had never understood how Mama had had one human child and one full youkai instead of a set of hanyou twins.

Chapter 4: Intoxicate

Chapter Text

They made their way through the dense forest, following the small creek until it widened into a stream and then a lake, leaf-covered grass giving way to cold sand and even colder water.

Water churned at the base of a small waterfall, dispelling the silence and drowning out their footsteps.

"Not planning on throwing me in this time, are you?" Kagome asked, eyes scanning the other side of the treeline.

"Of course not!" Even as she said it, Kagura's lips turned up into a grin. "I only do that during the summer."

"I'm pretty sure it's my turn, anyway."

"Only if you're keeping track!" Kagura released her arm, leaves swirling around her feet as waves crashed against the shore, mist coating Kagome's face. Most youkai were animal-based, especially those living in town, but not Kagura.

Kagura was the wind.

Elementals were rare, especially when it came to mixed-blood children, but there was no denying where her powers lay. The air became charged whenever she was near—like she herself was the eyes of the storm.

Kagura had trained just as hard as Kagome, though she'd never mastered the defensive spells like her sister, but who needed them when even the most ferocious fires dwindled at her feet from lack of oxygen?

Each sister was a force to be reckoned with.

As a pair, they were unmatched.

Chapter 5: Crucible

Chapter Text

"Do we have enough for dinner?"

Kagome looked at their net; there hadn't been many fish in the lake today, but if they separated the skin, they could use it as an extra side dish. "I think so. We'll have to hunt again tomorrow, though."

"You say that like it's a bad thing," Kagura grinned, already buzzing with excitement.

"We need to collect the fruit before the first frost," she reminded her.

Kagura shrugged, then got to her feet, taking the net with her. "So I'll go hunting, and you can check the apples."

"Mama wants us to stick together."

"That was when we were kids. I can take care of myself." Kagura paused, ruby eyes narrowing as she looked over her shoulder. "And so can you."

Kagome pursed her lips, then scrambled to gather the rest of their gear, her sister having already disappeared between the trees. It wasn't like she was afraid of going out on her own, but their cottage within the barrier was secure.

Safe.

She rubbed her chest as she stood, casting one last glance at the water, and silently wishing Kagura's hunt would be successful. The winter months were harsh, the constant snowstorms making it hard to even leave the house in the first place. They had to collect as much supplies as possible to ensure their survival.

A tingle of youki was her only warning, her breath seizing in her lungs moments before the creature emerged from the treeline.

Chapter 6: Magnanimous

Chapter Text

Silver fur shone in the fading sunlight, teal pupils regarding her from within crimson irises, and Kagome found herself hypnotized.

The slight distortion in the air was nothing compared to the power that lay within, the water rippling as though part of the sea, but not a single wave dared to crash near its feet.

The animals in the forest were a mixture of mammals and youkai, but they all were more beast than brain, providing them with sustenance during a hunt—or at least scattering when they got near.

Not this one.

The ground shook with the weight of its power, freezing Kagome to the spot, yet it never moved from the opposite shore. The tail twitched as it watched her, twin magenta stripes bordering feral jaws that never opened, never snarled.

What was it waiting for?

The air shifted again, and the creature took a step towards her, muscles rolling as if it intended to leap the entire lake in one go. Kagome's feet mimicked the movement, sand crunching beneath her as she retreated backwards.

Reaching for her power, she breathed a sigh of relief when reiki responded, then raised her chin, hoping it hadn't noticed her trembling feet.

She was stronger than this. Braver than this.

It stopped, then glanced at the trees behind it, the mountain of fur on its shoulder standing on end.

Finally free of its gaze, Kagome turned and ran.

Chapter 7: Augur

Chapter Text

She just needed to get to the barrier—or catch up with Kagura.

Kagome bolted through the trees, branches catching her hair and face as she forced herself to keep going. She'd thought she knew every creature in the forest, but this one—this monster—was something otherworldly, and she didn't know if it was friend or foe.

And she wasn't going to stick around to find out.

Her fingers grazed the edge of the barrier, and she fell to her knees within its protective wall, clutching at the grass as she gasped for air.

She was home.

She was safe.

The comforting arms of her mother encircled her shoulders, soft reassurances floating by her ear as she simultaneously caught Kagura's wrist, preventing her from going after whatever Kagome had been running from.

Emiko slowly pulled Kagome to her feet, coaxing her inside as Kagura kept watch, bow at the ready should the threat reappear. Her fan was her best weapon, but she wouldn't take the chance of distorting the barrier—not with the fear emanating from her sister.

The cottage was warm and inviting, as it always was, and Kagome slumped into a chair, fingers tightening around the blanket her mother had draped around her.

She'd finally gotten her heartbeat under control when a startling thought occurred: the entire time she'd been captivated by the beast's gaze, the pain in her chest had disappeared.

Chapter 8: Hummock

Chapter Text

It was a while before she'd stopped shaking.

"Are you sure it wasn't your imagination?" Kagura asked.

Kagome vehemently shook her head. "It wasn't a spirit, it was solid. And—" She wanted to say terrifying, but the lack of discomfort in her chest had her hesitating.

The creature hadn't attacked, barely moving from the edge of the bank. It had merely stared, teal and crimson unblinking, its presence enough to make her forget all her training.

"What did it look like?" Her mother placed a cup of tea in her hands, warmth seeping through her fingertips and dispelling the chill.

"A large dog, but more. With marks on its face," Kagome whispered. "Definitely youkai. But I've never felt youki that strong before."

Kagura crossed her arms. "And it only showed up after I left?"

Kagome nodded, taking a sip of her drink. "It was like everything went quiet. Not even the grass was moving! Except at the other end of the lake—but it didn't feel like an elemental. It was nothing like you."

Her sister's frown increased, but it was Emiko who spoke up. "There are many kinds of creatures we haven't come across. Perhaps you should recheck the scrolls."

"Mama, I've read them a thousand times. They never mentioned anything like what I saw today."

"It's strange that it didn't follow you," Kagura said, brow furrowing. "You were easy prey." Kagome glared at her, and she shrugged. "What? You're the one who froze! If it was as big as you say, it could've trampled you with one paw!"

Kagome pursed her lips. "It was distracted. Guess it found something more appetizing."

"Maybe it was protecting you."

Chapter 9: Nugatory

Chapter Text

Kagome gave her mother a dubious look. "Nothing that scary protects anything but itself, Mama. Running away probably meant I was too much trouble, so it went after something else."

Emiko shrugged a shoulder. "You never know, love. Youkai are more in tune with their instincts than humans. Maybe it knew how special you are."

"Or that it would lose a limb if it tried anything," Kagura smirked.

"You just said I was easy prey!"

Kagura wrapped an arm around Kagome's neck. "Doesn't mean you wouldn't have gotten a shot off beforehand. And I would've avenged your death." Kagome chuckled as their mother scolded her sister, brandishing a wooden spoon for even joking about any harm coming to either of them.

"You two have a special bond. You have to watch out for each other," she said.

"We know," they chorused, feeling like they were five again instead of two decades past that—especially when Emiko enveloped them both in a tight hug, her hands shaking as she kissed the top of their heads.

"I'm glad you're both safe."

Kagome let out a warbled laugh, returning the embrace before Kagura groaned and pushed them away. "I'm going to do one last patrol. Make sure whatever it was isn't hiding or waiting for us to go to sleep."

"I'll come with—" Kagome was pinned with a glare from both women, holding up her hands in defeat. "On second thought, I'll get started on dinner."

Chapter 10: Farce

Chapter Text

The beast didn't show itself again, though Kagome had the distinct feeling of being watched every time she left the cottage.

Kagura was more protective than usual, never letting her out of her sight whenever they needed to hunt outside the barrier, but Kagome welcomed it, using it as a chance to hone their skills together.

Though she drew the line when it came to bathing.

"I can dry my own hair," she grumbled, Kagura weaving the dark locks into a braid.

"Never said you couldn't." She tied a string to the end, then leaned back to admire her work.

"Yet you keep offering to do it," Kagome said, eyes narrowing over her shoulder. "And why can't we bathe in the lake like we normally do?"

Kagura rolled her eyes. "Because it's currently frozen over, that's why." Kagome pursed her lips. Her sister was right, of course; the temperature had dropped tremendously in the last week, and the forest was now blanketed in a foot of snow.

"You know what I mean," she said, rising to her feet to check the stew bubbling over the fire. "We haven't seen that thing in months—"

"That doesn't mean anything." Kagura crossed her arms, giving her a fierce look. "And you're the one who keeps saying it's still out there."

"I said something feels off," Kagome argued. "I don't know what it is." And truth be told, she didn't. It made the hair at the back of her neck stand on end, but it felt darker than the youki from the creature at the lake.

It was something she couldn't just laugh off, especially with the lack of pain in her chest.

Chapter 11: Pell-Mell

Chapter Text

The wind picked up as they ate dinner, whistling through the trees and rattling the windows. Kagome stoked the fire, keeping the flames high and the cottage warm as snow fell from violent violet clouds.

"We'll probably be stuck in here for a few days," Emiko said, gazing out the window from her rocking chair. "I don't think the storm is going to let up anytime soon."

Kagura's fingers twitched, and Kagome patted her shoulder as she walked by. Her twin was always restless when they were forced to stay inside. She was more at home in the thick of the forest, when she could feel the sun on her face and wind through her hair.

On the other hand, Kagome was content to spend her days inside helping their mother with charms and medicinal herbs. Emiko would sell them in the village, refusing Kagome's help whenever she offered to go with her.

The curiosity of why constantly plagued her, but she trusted her mother, so she never questioned it. Plus, the kingdom was run by youkai, and if Kagura's scar was anything to go by, Kagome's power would likely cause an uproar if she lost control in such a crowded area.

Grabbing a book off the shelf, she sat in front of the fire, flipping past the first chapter. Even with the storm, she'd be able to—

Kagome's eyes flew to the door seconds before something slammed into it, the entire house shaking.

Chapter 12: Extirpate

Chapter Text

"What on earth—" Emiko rose from her chair, Kagome's mind screaming to stop her.

"Some of the snow probably fell off the roof," Kagura said, grabbing a broom.

Kagome's eyes widened in horror. Couldn't they feel it?

"D-Don't—" She scrambled to her feet, finally finding her voice. She reached Kagura in time, yanking her away from the door, her sister letting out a yelp when she hit the floor.

Her mother's hand wrapped around the handle. "Calm down, Kagome. We're safe inside your barrier. If it's not snow, then it must be a hurt animal. Usually, you're the first one wanting to help."

"Mama, this is different! It could be—"

Emiko opened the door, ice hitting her in the face as something collapsed at her feet. Her gasp was cut off as Kagome stepped in front of her, hands glowing.

The beast was smaller than before but still took up the entire doorway, fur caked with ice as it whined softly. Kagome's eyes narrowed, and she cupped her hands together, ready to blast it into oblivion.

Her mother's hand on her shoulder made her pause. "Does it feel like a threat?"

Kagome gave her an incredulous look. "Mama, this is the same thing from—"

"Does it feel like a threat?" Her mother's voice was stern, her grip firm, and Kagome glanced down at the creature.

"No."

"Then it doesn't deserve whatever you were about to do to it." She turned to Kagura. "Heat up some water and grab towels."

"But—"

Emiko's eyes narrowed, and her daughters fell in line, brushing off as much snow as they could before wrapping the creature up and dragging it further into the house.

Chapter 13: Temerity

Chapter Text

It was a while before they'd rid the creature of the snow and ice it had nearly been buried in, the towels used more for mopping up the puddles around it than keeping it warm.

Kagome jumped at every movement but eventually realized it was barely conscious and followed her mother's instructions to check for wounds.

She initially scoffed at the idea of the beast being hurt by anything, but a pained whimper escaped its muzzle when her hand ran over its shoulder, her fingers coming back sticky and red.

"I'll get the bandages," Kagura said, though her tone was hesitant, and Kagome shook her head.

"I doubt they'll stay on once it wakes up."

Kagura frowned. "What do you suggest then? We can't have it bleeding all over the floor." Something tugged Kagome's mind, coaxing her hand back to the wound.

She'd trained her reiki to protect and attack, leaving the healing part to the herbs and salves, but as she gazed at the creature, she felt its power call out to her, pleading for more.

Brushing back its fur, she concentrated on the wound, imagining it stitching itself back together, and youki stirred from within. She grabbed her sister's hand to ground herself, then let her reiki flow into it, brow furrowing at what she found.

Something was interfering with the beast's healing process.

Renewed by determination, she forced the block out of the way, feeling the beast relax against her as their powers intertwined, the wound slowly disappearing.

Chapter 14: Leonine

Chapter Text

"I didn't know you could do that."

Kagome's eyes fluttered open, and she stared at where the wound had been. "I didn't know I could do that either." All of the scrolls, all of her experience told her that reiki and youki were opposing forces—there could never be a balance because one of them was always fighting for dominance.

This hadn't been the case.

The creature had welcomed her power at first contact, like pieces of a puzzle fitting together, and she looked up at Emiko. "What do you think, Mama?"

She gave Kagome a soft smile. "I think he owes you his life."

"He?" Kagura raised an eyebrow. "How do you know it's male?"

Emiko motioned to the extra plume of fur on its right shoulder. "Only males have this. Plus, a female's ears are longer."

Kagome's eyes widened in realization. "You've seen something like this before. That's why you knew it wasn't a threat."

Emiko picked up the soaked towels, hanging them up near the fire. "I didn't know. I simply asked if he felt like one. But yes, I have seen them before. They are a rare breed. Powerful."

Kagura shot to her feet. "Then why did we let him in? He could wake up any minute and—"

"He won't hurt us," Kagome said, laying a hand on the beast's head. She wasn't sure how she knew, but the brush with his youki left no doubt in her heart.

They were safe with him.

Chapter 15: Vamoose

Chapter Text

"You changed your mind rather quickly," Kagura said, glaring at the creature from across the room. Kagome bit her lip, knowing she was right, but unable to explain herself.

It was the same beast that froze her in her tracks from across the lake, the same beast that she'd been convinced was going to hunt her down as she scrambled through the forest, yet as she watched the steady rise and fall of his chest, her fingers itched to stroke his head.

Something was definitely wrong with her.

"I don't get it," Kagura continued, twirling her fan between her fingers, the weapon having not left her hand since the creature's wounds had healed. "I'm half expecting him to wake up and bite off an arm."

Kagome let out a strained chuckle, the thought not far from her mind, but even his youki had been subdued since his arrival, only stirring when she was near.

Like it was reaching out to her.

"Do you think Mama will make him leave once he wakes up?" Kagome asked, glancing toward the snow-covered window. The blizzard hadn't let up, trapping them inside their home as winds continued to howl.

"Depends on how grateful he is that you saved him."

"You helped."

Kagura shook her head. "Dragging him inside so we could close the door doesn't count. I would've let him bleed out to keep his strength from returning."

Kagome regarded her sister for a moment, then shook her head. "Liar. There's no way you'd be that cruel." Kagura pursed her lips but didn't answer.

Chapter 16: Cornucopia

Chapter Text

Kagura was still wary as night fell, brandishing her fan as she paced the living room. She'd convinced Kagome to set up a barrier around him, marked by talismans as a further precaution, though their mother had advised against it.

"It's unnecessary," Emiko said from the kitchen.

"Tell that to his teeth," Kagura muttered, crossing her arms. Noticing the tension in her sister's shoulders, Kagome pulled her into a hug. "What're you doing?"

"I know you're just worried about me," Kagome said, rubbing their cheeks together.

It took a moment before Kagura relaxed, letting out a long sigh. "Somebody has to."

"And you're the best at it," Kagome said with a smile, giving her one last squeeze before settling down in front of the beast. His breathing had evened out since his wounds had healed, proving he was still alive, but he'd yet to regain consciousness.

She rubbed her chest, still not used to the lack of discomfort, then reached through the barrier to place her hand on his muzzle. Please be alright, she thought, stroking the silver fur. He was the size of a bear, though she'd never seen one with this colouring before.

Kagome's heart leapt into her throat as the beast finally stirred, leaning into the touch before his eyes fluttered open.

Crimson irises still surrounded teal pupils, giving him a fearful expression, especially with the jagged stripes on his cheeks, but he simply stared at her, then pressed his nose into the centre of her palm.

"Hello," she murmured, welcoming the touch. "How're you feeling?"

Chapter 17: Jejune

Chapter Text

They stayed like that for a while, Kagura never taking her eyes off him, all while mumbling threats under her breath. Emiko emerged from the kitchen, patting her head even though they were the same height.

"Save that for when he's actually done something," she chided.

"You're the one always telling us to be proactive instead of reactive," Kagura grumbled, accepting the cup of tea.

The beast perked up when her mother came near, kneeling in front of him with a soft smile. "That was a nasty wound you had. You're lucky Kagome was here to help you." He looked between the two women, then shifted, placing his head at Emiko's feet. She chuckled and shook her head. "I had nothing to do with it; she felt you deserved saving."

The sisters shared a look, Kagome pulling on her mother's sleeve. "Mama, are you able to talk to him?"

"It's not so much talking, dear. Inuyoukai have a language all their own; perhaps you should brush up on it while he's here."

Kagome blushed, knowing it had been a while since she'd read through the scrolls, focusing more on active experience out in the woods. "Yes, Mama."

"I'm sure he'll help you along the way," she said, patting Kagome's shoulder before getting to her feet. "And you're welcome to be protective, but don't be overzealous in your assumptions." She gave Kagura a pointed look, the woman hiding her frown behind her teacup, ruby eyes never leaving the creature.

"I'll behave as long as he does."

Chapter 18: Sustain

Chapter Text

The beast snorted, then returned his nose to Kagome's hand, eyes fluttering shut. It was odd to see him so relaxed, considering his size. She stayed that way until his breathing evened out, but even then, she was hard-pressed to pull away.

"What do you think he eats?" she wondered aloud as the three of them sat at the table, steam rising from bowls of stew.

"Virgins." Kagome choked on her food as their mother shot Kagura a scathing look. "What? It might be true."

"Youkai do not eat humans," Emiko reminded her. "They're like any animal—they only attack when threatened."

"Until he decides he'd rather live in comfort all winter and thinks it's too crowded with us here." Her eyes hadn't left the beast since he'd arrived, her agitation evident in the way she fiddled with her spoon.

Kagome reached over and grabbed her sister's hand, Kagura looking at their interlocked digits before leaning back with a sigh. "Something's off, okay? Regardless of his type being one we've never seen before, I don't trust him."

The worry about Kagome's safety went unspoken, but Kagome smiled all the same. "I love you too."

Kagura huffed and returned to her bowl but didn't let go of Kagome's hand, ignoring the soft smile from their mother as they finished their meal.

Chapter 19: Onomatopoeia

Chapter Text

The beast seemed content to sit by the fire, only proving he was awake when he lifted his head off his massive paws.

Kagome spent most of her time buried in her mother's scrolls, looking for anything to do with inuyoukai.

And instances of reiki connecting with youki.

The first search proved fruitful; there was a general understanding between demons in terms of acceptable behaviour and overall respect, but each faction had acquired their own set of non-verbal cues, to the point of being able to communicate without uttering a word—even in humanoid form.

Kagome found it fascinating.

She leaned back against him, his fur tickling her arms. Kagura was still wary, but Kagome enjoyed his quiet company, opting to curl up with him near the fire. The beast never complained, often leaning his head against her leg as she read.

"So according to this, a touch to the chest means forgiveness," she said, placing her hand above his belly. "Not that I really have anything to forgive you for. Other than being scary, I suppose."

The beast huffed, teal pupils boring into hers as he raised his head. Kagome kept their gazes locked, unafraid, and he huffed again, then licked her cheek before laying back down.

Kagome flipped back through her notes, a frown tugging at her lips.

What could he possibly be sorry for?

Chapter 20: Wheedle

Chapter Text

The sensation of his tongue on her cheek lingered, causing Kagome's mind to wander to the point of Kagura turning it into a game. They'd have had to replace an entire set of teacups if her reflexes weren't as honed as they were.

"What does it matter?" Kagura asked, finally admitting that the beast paid no threat, often using him as furniture. When she found him draped in towels or covered in wet dishes, Kagome didn't know whether to laugh or scowl.

Kagome opened her mouth to answer, then closed it again. She wasn't sure why it mattered, only that it did, wishing she had a better way of communicating with him.

"You could always teach him to write," Kagura smirked, reading her thoughts. "Though Mama would probably get mad from the ink getting everywhere."

Rolling her eyes, Kagome shoved her sister, both dissolving into laughter. The beast's eye cracked open, though it went unnoticed, the women chatting about plans for spring and what they would replenish first.

There was an air of tranquillity throughout the house, made better by the constant warmth of the fire and Kagome's soft murmurings when she returned to the beast's side. Words of poetry mixed with crackling flames, creating an odd but compelling lullaby, the woman eventually giving up the fight to keep her eyes open, the scroll lying forgotten as she succumbed to slumber.

Chapter 21: Motley

Chapter Text

"She's worried about you," Emiko said from her rocking chair.

The beast raised his head, giving her a questioning look. Emiko didn't look up from her sewing, tapping a finger against her forehead. His eyes narrowed, but he said nothing, not wanting to disturb the woman lying against him. The creases of worry disappeared when she slept, her hands fisted through his fur as if it were a lifeline, not realizing how much he wished to do the same.

"Scowl all you want, pup. It won't do any good."

'Her feelings are unnecessary.' The low voice seemed to echo throughout the room, but Emiko knew she was the only one who heard it.

"A mother's feelings are always necessary," she said, knotting off the thread. "Rumours are circling the kingdom. People have been disappearing."

The beast let out a sigh, eyes lowering in shame. 'He has grown stronger. And those of weaker breeding fall in line with the promise of power.'

Emiko's hands stilled, heart clenching painfully at her daughter. "It wasn't supposed to take this long. You were supposed to—"

'I am aware of my failure.'

"I didn't mean it that way," she said, waving him off. "I don't blame you for what happened. And neither does she."

He snorted, then put his head back on the floor, tail curling around Kagome's feet.

Emiko leaned back in her chair, the wood squeaking as shadows from the fire danced up the walls, trying to ward off the chill. "How long will you stay?"

'He is dormant in the winter.' The excuse was sound, but his head tilted towards Kagome, and Emiko fought back a grin.

"I'm sure that's the only reason."

Chapter 22: Quiddity

Chapter Text

The days passed quickly in the quiet tranquillity of their routine. Kagome's bed was left unused, the feel of the beast's fur her preferred place to rest.

Emiko never addressed it, her expression switching between motherly smugness and being pinched with worry when her daughter wasn't looking. Kagura finally accepted he wasn't a threat, for the most part, rubbing it in by using him to dry laundry or organize supplies.

And when the storm finally ebbed, he followed them into the snow to hunt, keeping watch as the sisters replenished their pantry, turning away all of Kagome's offerings when they sat down to eat.

"How're we supposed to call you a pet if you don't eat anything?" Kagura said, chewing on a piece of dried meat.

Kagome glared at her, then patted his head. "Ignore her. She's just bitter that I caught the bigger game today."

"You wouldn't have caught it if I hadn't chased it towards you," Kagura argued, her fork poking Kagome in the thigh.

"Details." The women grinned at each other, the beast pushing his head against Kagome's hand before returning to the fireplace. She watched him with curious eyes.

In all the time spent with them, he'd never snarled or bared his claws. She wondered if she'd completely imagined the quaking fear coursing through her body when they'd first crossed paths.

Chapter 23: Sandbag

Chapter Text

Absently rubbing her chest, she missed the frown on her mother's face. "Are you alright?"

Kagome blinked, refocusing on their meal. "I'm fine. My chest hasn't hurt in a long time." She smiled sheepishly, then shrugged. "Guess it's just a habit now."

She thought she saw Emiko's eyes flicker towards their guest, but her mother returned her smile, then tapped her bowl, the women finishing their meal in content silence.

Though the winter nights were long, spring came early, buds forming on the rose bushes surrounding their home as the twittering of birds greeted the day. Rays of sunshine warmed Kagome's face as she stepped out of the cottage.

"Even without the wake-up call, it just smells different," she said, sighing happily as she ran her fingers over the dew-covered plants.

The beast huffed in agreement. With how much time he spent on the floor, she sometimes forgot how large he was, his height matching hers when standing.

He'd been antsy the last few days, tail twitching as youki flowed towards the doorway. Kagome had thought it was from being cooped up for so long, hoping that a stretch would do him good, but the way his eyes remained on the horizon told her otherwise.

"You're leaving, aren't you?" She tried to keep smiling, but her lip trembled, mist filling her vision. She was being stupid; this was a wild animal—a wild youkai—not some domesticated pet. There was no way he'd—

Something soft brushed her cheek, Kagome hastily wiping her eyes to find a rosebud sticking out of his teeth. Letting out a warbled laugh, she accepted the gift, sliding her fingers up his muzzle before wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Don't be a stranger, okay?"

Chapter 24: Gloaming

Chapter Text

She stayed outside longer than she should've, only returning when her mother dropped an extra shawl around her and guided her back inside.

Kagura's joking remarks were quickly silenced, pursing her lips before offering to hunt by herself. "Take it easy today," she said, squeezing Kagome's shoulder.

Kagome inclined her head, pulling the shawl closer, unable to stave off the chill that had settled into her bones since he'd left. She'd watched him disappear through the trees until the last remnants of his youki dissipated.

He'd never once looked back.

The house felt empty, lacking, and even though the temperature was warmer than it had been in months, Kagome continued to shiver.

"You've given yourself a fever," Emiko remarked, placing the back of her hand on her forehead.

Was that why she felt so off?

She refused all the food her mother offered, even the sight of it turning her stomach, eventually giving in to her command to go to bed. She automatically moved towards the fire, a strange noise escaping her at the site of the vacant hearth.

Emiko wrapped her arms around her, Kagome's sobs muffled as she led her toward her room. "He'll be back," she said, combing her fingers through her hair.

"How do you know?" Her bed was stiff and cold, and Kagome wondered how she'd ever slept there in the first place.

Emiko's expression was conflicted as she tucked the blanket around her. "Inuyoukai imprint on those important to them. He'll be thinking of you even if he's not here." Her mother's words were comforting but not comforting enough, loneliness settling deep in her heart.

Chapter 25: Perceptible

Chapter Text

The pain in her chest had returned.

It hadn't been as noticeable in the beginning, Kagome being too distracted by the beast's departure, but as the days got warmer, the pain seemed to get worse.

She didn't think anything of it—it was something she'd always lived with—but when her powers started to become affected, Kagome knew something was wrong.

Kagura didn't say anything as she wrapped a bandage around her sister's arm. It should've been a routine hunt, but the boar youkai had turned at the last moment, charging Kagome and smashing through her barrier.

Something that had never happened before.

She'd dived out of the way, Kagura taking the opportunity to attack from behind, but the boar's tusk had caught Kagome's arm, leaving her with a large gouge and wounded pride.

"It's not as bad as it looks," Kagura said, tying off the bandage.

"My barrier broke," Kagome retorted, yanking her arm away, instantly regretting the sharp movement as pain shot through her.

"It's probably just from lack of sleep. You should—"

Kagome tuned the rest of her words out, rubbing her chest as she gazed out the window. She'd known her power was acting up but had gone hunting anyway. She'd thought she could counter it with her weapons, but her reactions had been slowed due to the lack of reiki coursing through her.

If it had been Kagura who'd gotten hurt, she never would've forgiven herself.

Chapter 26: Celerity

Whoops! Forgot to post this one yesterday. You'll get a second update later!

Chapter Text

The rose was on their doorstep the following day.

It had been another restless night, made worse by nightmares about the boar attacking Kagura, so Kagome had planned on taking an early morning walk to calm her nerves but paused at the bloom at her feet.

Careful of the thorns, she picked it up. The stem had been cut, so it hadn't blown there by chance, and she turned it around before inhaling its sweet scent.

The petals shifted, and the beast's youki slid past her cheeks, calming her like nothing else could. Kagome leaned against the doorway, suddenly lightheaded; she'd almost forgotten how it felt to be curled against him, but the sensation of silken fur tickled the back of her neck, easing away the tension that had been building up over the past months.

Quickly righting herself, she ran to the edge of the barrier, reiki searching, but she came up empty, greeted only by a summer breeze.

Any other day, she may have collapsed, but her skin still tingled from his youki, invigorating her with an energy she hadn't felt since snow covered the forest.

She sent out a silent thanks, then returned to the cottage, her steps light and carefree, Emiko instantly commenting on the bright smile on her face. Kagome hummed as she pulled a vase out of the cupboard, ignoring Kagura's questioning look before hugging them both.

"It's going to be a wonderful day!"

Chapter 27: Abdicate

Chapter Text

Nothing could change Kagome's mood. A weight had been lifted from her shoulders, and though her chest still ached with the same odd emptiness as before, it didn't feel as foreboding.

Especially when another rose showed up the next day.

And every week after that.

She tried not to anticipate them, as there was no rhyme or reason to their appearance, but every seven days, Kagome opened the door to find a delicate bloom on the doorstep, its petals humming with youki.

The potency of her powers returned, no longer affected by weariness and melancholy, the zing of her arrow often followed by sisters' combined laughter.

"Your aim has gotten better," Kagura remarked, lounging on a tree branch as Kagome landed another hit.

"Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so," she said, shifting her position before knocking her last arrow.

Kagura snorted. "Don't go getting all arrogant on me now. You'll end up getting hurt again."

Kagome waved her off with a slight shrug of her shoulder, then let the final arrow fly, the head burrowing itself into the target. They were so close together that she could've covered the space they took up with her palm.

"I still think it's weird that some random youkai leaves you flowers."

She grinned as she pulled the arrows free, inspecting them to see if any needed repairs. "Jealous?"

"Of the furry mutt you used as a pillow? Not likely." Kagura lifted her chin, enjoying the wind wafting through her hair, then turned to her sister with a smirk, ruby eyes gleaming. "Of the mystery man you've been dreaming about? Maybe."

Chapter 28: Solace

Chapter Text

Kagome almost hadn't told her about the strange dreams she'd been having, but after the third day of walking around with a blush on her cheeks, Kagura had finally demanded the truth from her.

At first, there hadn't been much to say; she couldn't even tell where she was in the dream. Everything was fuzzy, like she'd woken up from a deep sleep and her eyes hadn't quite focused yet.

But even with the lack of clarity, or understanding, Kagome felt protected, a stark contrast to the disharmony of reality, regardless of the shift she'd felt from the beast's gifts. And when she could focus, a mixture of silver and gold tempted her in a way nothing else had.

Claws would wrap around her wrist, pulling her away from wherever she was, and she always expected things to become sharper, but it was like they were moving through a fog. And there was never a destination, just the constant movement of shapes around them.

The first dream had left her anxious, head spinning as she tried to make out something familiar, but the grip, though never hostile, was unrelenting. And anytime she tried to pull away, their fingers would intertwine, and the stranger would pull her closer, brushing the back of her hand against his lips.

The hue of gold was always the most vibrant then, cutting through the fog like the morning sun, and Kagome was helpless to do anything but follow.

Her skin still tingled each time she woke.

Chapter Text

A piece of bark hit Kagome in the head.

"You're daydreaming again."

Pursing her lips, she returned to her arrows, tightening the bindings before dropping them in her quiver. "Am not." Even as she said it, she felt blood rush to her face.

Kagura chuckled, eying her from the tree. "You always chew the inside of your cheek when you lie." Kagome threw a rock at her, bouncing it off her foot. "Hey, I don't blame you! I'd want to dream about him too."

Her hands stilled again, shoulders slumping as she let out a long sigh. "He isn't real. He's just some fantasy my mind has made up."

Kagura raised a skeptical brow. "I've never heard of anyone dreaming about the same made-up person as often as you have. It's been, what, every few days?"

Kagome hid her expression under her bangs, fiddling with the arrowheads as she nodded.

It had been every night.

He came for her every night.

It never went any further than the innocent touch of his lips against her hand, but her daydreams enjoyed tormenting her with the thought of more. Especially with how the gold in his eyes darkened when he looked at her—as if he knew exactly where her mind wandered to when she was awake.

She blushed again, then focused on her work, turning the conversation away from the god-like creature who haunted her at night, idly playing with the rose above her ear.

Chapter 30: Vandalize

Chapter Text

With how vivid the dreams were, Kagome kept expecting to wake up exhausted, but each morning she woke rested and energized, ready to conquer the day. It wasn't until the air cooled and the forest began to shift from green to red that her energy started to wane.

She tried to tell herself it was due to the shorter days and the increase in their duties to prepare for winter, but as the roses became less and less frequent, she couldn't help her mind from running wild.

"Why don't you skip today?" her mother said, placing a concerned hand on her shoulder. They'd planned on going hunting, but her bow had needed restringing, and no matter how hard she concentrated, the fibres wouldn't hold, covering her fingers in minor cuts.

"It could snow any day now." They needed one good kill to top up their supplies, and the animals and youkai would hibernate, so time was not on their side, but Kagome didn't argue when the bow was tugged out of her hands.

"A day won't hurt," Kagura chimed in, and Kagome gave her a tired but grateful smile.

It wasn't just the roses; that strange uneasiness from last year had returned, and she was constantly on edge, the sensation of being watched making the hair on the back of her neck raise every time she left the safety of the barrier.

Chapter 31: Expeditious

Chapter Text

There was nothing there, no tangible source every time she reached out with her reiki, so there was no way for her to displace the discomfort. It was only when the familiar shimmer of her barrier washed over her shoulders that it went away, spurring on her need to remain indoors.

It was a routine she'd gotten used to as the days grew colder, each morning greeting her with frost instead of flora.

"It's a good thing you don't control the weather," Kagura mused, throwing another log onto the fire. "We'd already be buried in snow by now."

Kagome was tempted to throw something at her but couldn't tear herself away from the window. Usually, she was indifferent to snow—she much preferred the warmth of spring when things began to thrive—but the image of him and the memory of spending months curled up against him while the world was blanketed in white had her second-guessing her choice.

Reiki became a siren song, dissipating at the edge of the barrier so as not to lure anything nefarious into their home. She just wanted to make sure he was alright.

Kagura glared at her as if reading her thoughts—and hearing the lie.

"No one would ever know you prefer to stay inside with how much time you spend staring out there," she said, poking her sister in the cheek.

"Perhaps all people need to change is a little motivation," their mother chuckled.

A prickle of awareness had Kagome choking on her response and throwing open the door, the sting of the cold going unnoticed as she darted out into the snow barefoot.

Chapter 32: Bravado

Chapter Text

The bite of the cold barely registered as she crashed into him, burying her face against his neck as she whimpered into his fur. "Are you alright? You're not hurt, are you?"

She could feel the stiffness of his muscles, as if he was surprised at her reaction, eventually lowering his head to nuzzle her in return. The tears she hadn't realized she'd been holding back overflowed, almost turning to ice on her cheeks as she clung to him.

All the longing and loneliness seeped out of her, the tightness in her chest dissipating as his cold, damp nose was pressed against her collar. The roses had granted her a reprieve, but nothing compared to seeing him in person.

Questions tumbled around in her head, but words wouldn't form, and only the purposeful clearing of her mother's throat finally caused her to raise her head. "I'm sure he's happy to see you too, dear, but can you do so inside? That way, we won't have to worry about frostbite?"

Kagome opened her mouth to protest, but the beast was already urging her back inside, growling softly when he noticed nothing protecting her feet.

"I wanted to make sure it was really you," she argued, hissing with each step. He didn't stop pushing until she was seated in front of the fire, a blanket placed around her shoulders as melting snow dripped off his fur.

And all the while, Kagome refused to let go of him, her hand on his shoulder, his head, his paw, never once letting him out of her sight.

Chapter 33: Imbue

Chapter Text

Emiko inclined her head as he lay down beside the hearth. "Welcome back. I assume you'll be staying all winter?"

"If he is, I'm using Kagome's bed for storage," Kagura piped up, smirking when her sister glared at her. "What? We all know you won't be using it."

Kagome flushed, avoiding the beast's gaze as she sat next to him, his tail automatically curling around her. She felt silly, childish, for her earlier reaction, but she couldn't find it in herself to apologize.

Kagura and Emiko disappeared into the kitchen, Kagome turning around once they were out of earshot and hugging him fiercely. "I missed you."

Youki surrounded her, sliding up her arms as if to return the embrace, the rumble from his chest vibrating through her body and calming her nerves. The roses had helped, but the source was much more potent, more satisfying, mixing with her reiki as power blanketed them both.

It struck her as odd that there was no pushback. Most of the stories in her mother's scrolls told of youkai and those with holy powers attempting to destroy each other, reiki and youki causing storms and sudden shifts in weather during times of war.

It wasn't until the current royals came into power that people on the opposing sides stopped fighting long enough to consider the thought of peace. And even then, it had nearly fallen apart when the king had been assassinated.

Old ideals had sprung up, soldiers storming the Shiro when they thought the queen to be at her weakest, but Inukimi was a warrior in her own right, quickly setting the record straight that any attack would be met with retaliation in the bloodiest of ways.

Chapter 34: Compadre

Chapter Text

Her father had been one of the queen's guards, sworn to protect her at all costs.

It was an oath he'd taken to his grave.

Kagome never resented him for it, she barely remembered him, but Mama had told them stories about how fierce he was in battle, claiming the high ground with the rest of his crane brethren and cutting down any arrows aimed for Inukimi's head.

They'd fled the shiro during the uprising, her father's harsh whispers drowned out by cries of anguish following them as flames licked at their heels. He'd sent them to the cottage, a refuge from the chaos and bloodshed, and they'd huddled together as they waited for word that it was safe to go back.

It never came.

The cottage became their permanent home; Mama had said there were too many memories in the shiro, and the twins had been too young to argue. Kagome only wished there was someone around that had known her father better to fill in the blanks.

Had he been a compassionate soldier or a ruthless one? What had happened that night when so many had laid siege to the peaceful villagers surrounding the citadel? Had they simply wished to overthrow the royals, or had there been a more sinister plot at work?

As if sensing her distress, the beast slid his tongue along her cheek, catching the remaining tears as Kagome shook herself out of her reverie.

Chapter 35: Fiduciary

Chapter Text

"Thank you for the flowers," she said, leaning back against him. "Kagura thinks I'm imagining it, but I always feel better when you're around."

The beast placed his head in her lap, her fingers automatically running through his fur, and she was once again left wondering how she'd ever been scared of him.

Maybe it had just been shock, her mind unaccustomed to the sight of him or the sheer force of his youki, because they sat in content silence, the flicker of the flames softening the lines of his muzzle, Kagome knew there was nowhere she felt safer.

Her fingers soon slowed, eyes drooping as breath evened out, his presence allowing the exhaustion to take hold. Kagura eventually came by with a blanket, wrapping it around her still-frozen feet, ruby gaze never leaving her sister even as one of the beast's eyes cracked open.

"If you do anything to hurt her, I'll kill you," she said, a hard edge creeping into her voice.

"Kagura!" their mother admonished. "I think he's proven himself otherwise."

"By doing what? Showing up and nothing happening?" Kagura argued.

Emiko shook her head. "He would never—"

"You can't know that!" she hissed, glaring at him before getting to her feet. "He's affecting her powers somehow, and next time it'll be more than just a flesh wound." She stalked away, managing not to slam her door so as not to wake her sister.

Chapter 36: Undulate

Chapter Text

"You'll have to forgive her," Emiko sighed, slumping down in her chair. "She doesn't trust easily."

‘It is to be expected.’

She gave him a slight smile, her gaze slowly shifting to Kagome. "Any luck?"

There was a slight tilt of his head. ‘He is dormant during the winter months.’

"But last year—"

‘I was distracted.’ His body shifted, unconsciously moving closer to Kagome, eyes closing as his head rested in her lap. ‘It will not happen again.’

Emiko couldn't suppress her snort. "Because you only came here to avoid the snow." He didn't open his eyes, but his massive tail flicked back and forth, signalling his agitation. She chuckled, pushing herself out of her chair and patting his head as she passed by.

Some things never changed.

The prince had always suppressed his emotions, hiding them deep under a veil of training and duties, never allowing anyone to witness his true self. It aided him in battle, his enemies cowering in his presence, much like his father.

Emiko knew better. His mother often spoke of time spent in the library, devouring legends and myths instead of the war plans and academics his tutors had assigned. And the queen knew for a fact that the only reason the gardens flourished was due to her son's hand.

So it came as no surprise when the roses began appearing on their doorstep.

Did he know how much of himself he'd offered up in that single act?

Chapter 37: Morass

Chapter Text

The dreams got worse, though that wasn't the right word for it, considering what happened within them.

The location had never been clear, Kagome's eyes always focusing on the hand around hers, the twitch at his lips. They were constantly moving, the leisurely pace akin to a lover's stroll, but they never reached their destination—if there was one.

The ground began to take shape, lush grass giving way to an assortment of plant life Kagome had only read about in her mother's scrolls. The colours made her dizzy, her free hand grasping for purchase, and an arm wrapped around her waist, keeping her from toppling over.

The cool shade of ivory was welcoming, the scent of pine more so, and she let herself relax, arms wrapping around him as she tucked her head under his chin. Claws brushed the nape of her neck before running through her hair, and Kagome breathed a sigh of relief.

They stayed like that, neither finding any reason to move, the sounds around them muted even as a breeze encircled them, tangling their hair together. She would've laughed, but the overall feeling of contentment caused her energy to wane, and she leaned against him for support.

A soft chuckle ruffled her bangs before he pushed her hair out of her face, head lowering to the crook of her neck, and as the first rays of sunshine pulled her out of the dreamscape, she felt his mouth move against her skin.

"Mate."

Chapter 38: Putative

Chapter Text

Her skin was still rough with goosebumps when she woke, and she shivered even though the warmth of the beast's fur permeated her clothing.

The sun poked its head through violet clouds, reflecting off the newly fallen snow and making it seem later than it was. Taking a deep breath, Kagome stretched and got to her feet, padding around the cottage.

The beast watched her with curious eyes, and she smiled, showing him a bowl of uncooked rice. "I don't suppose you want any?"

He snorted, sending a few grains flying, and her smile only broadened as she stoked the fire, adding another log before placing the mixture over the embers. She took a few minutes to wash her face, then resumed her position against his side, eyes unseeing as her mind wandered.

"Do youkai dream?" she asked, playing with a frayed stitch on her yukata. "I know you don't sleep as much, but you must dream, right?" She felt the beast still behind her and placed a reassuring hand on his head. If they did dream, they probably had nightmares too, so she didn't push the issue, not wanting him to relive something traumatic.

Her mother soon joined them, and Kagome allowed herself to be pushed towards the bathroom, allowing Emiko to deal with the rest of breakfast while she bathed.

And all the while, the beast's gaze never left her, fixated on the closed door, unperturbed by the sound of clinking dishes.

What does she dream of?’

Emiko chuckled softly, then gave him a knowing look. "The same thing you do."

Chapter 39: Oblivion

Chapter Text

Crimson eyes narrowed, though they remained on the door Kagome had disappeared behind. 'Your knowledge of the subject is an annoyance.'

"I'll be sure to bring that up to your mother the next time I see her," Emiko said, unperturbed as she set the table.

'She wishes to interfere.'

"What she wishes," she paused, voice taking on a hard edge, much akin to the queen herself, "is to see you safe and happy. She wants to flush him out—"

'It is not her battle to fight.'

"And she knows that." Emiko whirled on him, brandishing her wooden spoon like a sword. "But you don't get to brush her off when all she's trying to do is help." Her grip on the handle reminded the beast of who her mate was and that others had lost more than their humanity the night of the uprising.

He bowed his head, acknowledging her sacrifice, and Emiko's expression immediately softened. "It's not a competition," she said, understanding the gesture. "I have my memories. And my girls. What you have is more precious."

Because there was a future in it.

The muscles of his shoulders rolled as he adjusted his position, and he'd have pursed his lips if he'd been able. 'I am aware.'

"Are you also aware I could've disposed of your gifts before she'd even seen them?"

He snorted. He'd known exactly where Kagome's tenacity came from, had seen the same fire in her mother's eyes on multiple occasions. 'I thank you for your generosity.'

"Don't thank me," Emiko said, a sigh allowing the tension to leave her body. "Just figure out where he is so you can focus on more important things."

Chapter 40: Ineluctable

Chapter Text

As the snow continued to fall, Kagome's only worry was how quickly the days seemed to pass. She usually looked forward to the return of spring, flowers sprouting through the ground and bringing colour back to the forest.

But as she sketched a pair of golden eyes by the fire, she found herself wishing the storm wouldn't let up. The longer it snowed, the longer he stayed.

"Where do you go in the spring?" she wondered aloud, a crescent moon appearing at the top of her parchment.

"Maybe he loses all his fur and is all wrinkled and gross," Kagura grinned, waving her fan at the beast, his ears flopping around before covering his face. He growled, righting the appendages as crimson irises narrowed. Kagura only grinned more, lifting her chin. "Glare all you want, Fluffy. We both know you won't do anything."

"That doesn't mean you should say it in the first place," Kagome grumbled, smoothing out his fur. He automatically leaned into the touch, youki teasing her fingers, and a smile tugged at her lips. Why couldn't they always be like this?

Everything was so calm and comfortable when he was around—her chest didn't hurt, her reiki didn't waver, and she was content. Kagura could make all the cracks she wanted, but Kagome knew she felt it too. Even their mother smiled more, though Kagome swore she'd started talking to herself.

The beast nuzzled her neck, and she laughed, it never occurring to her that his nose pressed against the same place as the man in her dreams.

Chapter 41: Dreidel

Chapter Text

The sound of shuffling feet woke him, one eye cracking open to find Emiko laying a blanket over Kagome. She'd given up trying to stay upright, currently curled against him and using a paw as a pillow. Her mouth curved into a slight smile, content even in sleep, and his tongue slid across her forehead.

"The block is still there," Emiko said, it no longer a question.

'He thought to punish me in every way possible.' The spider's web was far-reaching, silk lines vibrating with whispers of the prince's return, and Naraku had struck when they'd been most vulnerable, distracted by the celebration of the royal's success.

The only good thing that had come of that night was he'd played his hand too early—he'd caught the prince, but his true desire had managed to escape. Not unharmed, but the jewel's whereabouts remained hidden, allowing it to flourish.

It would not be so easily obtained now, even if Naraku discovered its secret.

This settled the beast's nerves, allowing him to relax and enjoy Kagome's company. The spring and summer months were spent searching, hunting, for any sign of the foul wretch who had forced him into this form permanently.

"She would help, you know." Emiko tucked the ends of the blanket around Kagome's shoulders.

'I am aware.' His voice was pained.

Tempted.

"But?"

He sighed, raising his head to look out the window, careful not to jostle the woman next to him. 'I have already asked too much of her.'

Emiko chuckled as she shook her head. "If you think she would hold it against you, you don't know her at all."

Chapter 42: Gainsay

Notes:

Forgot to post this yesterday, so you'll get another one later. I know y'all will be HEARTBROKEN.

Chapter Text

"It's not that bad, I swear!" Kagome laughed as the beast pushed at her arm, and she rolled up her sleeve. "See? There's barely a scar."

He huffed, staring intently at the mark from her altercation with the boar. It had long since healed, made better with her own herbal mixture, but his features were pinched with worry, and she ran her fingers through his fur.

"I'm alright." He didn't meet her gaze, leaning even closer before his tongue slid over her skin. There was a tingle of youki, and something else, and when he pulled back, the scar had completely disappeared.

She'd heard of some youkai having healing properties in their saliva but had never seen it in action before—it wasn't like it was easily accessible. Kagome whispered her thanks, then kissed his forehead. He bristled, slowly rising to his feet and walking stiffly into the kitchen.

She frowned and looked at her mother. "Did I do something wrong?"

Emiko chuckled, shaking her head. "No, dear. He's just embarrassed." A low growl sounded from the other room, but she was undeterred. "I say keep it up! Your surprises keep him on his toes. And I dare say someone should."

Kagome's frown deepened as she went back to her scrolls. She knew specific touches with youkai meant different things, but it wasn't like she'd kissed anywhere significant.

The beast didn't have any marks.

Chapter 43: Accoutrement

Chapter Text

And the fact that he didn't have any marks made his origins that much more mystifying.

Most full-blooded youkai were capable of speech, those of higher status having a humanoid form, but the beast had neither. He was intelligent enough that Kagome knew he was above the ones they hunted, especially with the strength of his youki, but there was something off about it.

Something stilted—like a part of him was missing. Maybe it had something to do with the seal that had affected his healing process the year prior.

Rolling onto her back with a sigh, she scratched the underside of his jaw. "You'd tell me if you needed help, right? If you were suffering in some way?" The question was rhetorical, but it saddened her to think he'd been afflicted by something. "Mama, are there any healers in town? Ones that specialize with youkai?"

Emiko met the beast's gaze. "I'm sure there are, but I doubt they know more than you. And none with your power."

Kagome sighed again. "I'm just thinking someone else might have a different way of looking at things."

"Which is what makes you so wonderful, dear." The beast seemed to agree, lapping at her hand, then her face, and her sighs turned into laughter, instantly distracted.

For the most part, the beast was content to lay by the fire, always perking up when she joined him. She hadn't felt any weakness or ennui, apart from that first night, so if he was affected by something, it couldn't be that bad.

Maybe she was just overthinking it.

Chapter 44: Deleterious

Chapter Text

"You have to leave again, don't you?"

The snow had begun to melt, as she knew it would, bringing warmth, sunlight, and misery. No matter how much she reminded herself that it would happen, nothing could prepare her for how tight her chest felt.

How was she supposed to survive the next several months without him?

They hadn't even gone outside yet, but the rains had started, washing away what was left of winter, the promise of spring on the horizon.

Kagome hated it.

Nights were spent clutching at his fur, unable to sleep, unable to enjoy the dreams she knew would be waiting for her. The fantasy of a man she'd never met was nothing compared to the tranquillity of reality, to the feel of him wrapped around her as she completed mundane chores.

He wasn't a pet but a companion.

The beast had no name, or if he did, he'd never voiced it. Or been bothered by what they did call him. But he was theirs. Hers. The family felt complete with him there, and every bird call, every sprout reminded her that they'd soon be torn apart, leaving her to deal with a void that no one else seemed to feel.

Biting back tears, she hugged him fiercely, knowing the whine that escaped him was for her distress and not the tightness of her grip.

"Take me with you," she begged, the sound muffled in his fur. "Whatever you're after, whatever you're searching for, I can help." It was desperate, and childish, but she couldn't go through another two seasons away from him.

He refused.

Chapter 45: Speculate

Chapter Text

"You're not doing either of you any favours," Emiko said. The beast lifted his chin, the disappointment in her tone cutting him deeper than her rage would have. "She's the one person you need with you right now—"

'Which is precisely why she must remain here.'

Emiko rolled her eyes. "According to who? You? She's just as much a part of this as you are now." He met her gaze, fur standing on end at the fierceness of her scowl, eventually hanging his head.

'She has never dealt with the likes of him before.'

"All of the more reason to take her with you."

'I will not put her in danger—'

"You put her in danger every time you leave!" she hissed, thankful Kagura was consoling her sister in her bedroom. "Every flower you give her, every dream you share only strengthens your bond. A lesser being would've gone mad by now."

He winced. 'You did not.'

"Kenji wasn't my twin flame," she countered. "Which I'm grateful for. I wouldn't have survived to take care of my girls if he had been." Twin flames were seldom come by, said to be two parts of the same being, split by the gods to weaken those living beneath the clouds.

The only drawback was once their life forces were tied together, one could not live without the other. If one died, their mate would slowly wither away, their body shutting down piece by piece. It was a gruesome fate and one people tended to avoid.

And such a bond was unheard of between a daiyoukai and a miko.

Chapter 46: Tortuous

Chapter Text

The queen had been surprised but accepting, immediately pulling the family within the castle walls, intent on providing knowledge and protection.

But it was not to be.

Word had spread of a limitless power, one that could be influenced and controlled, and it hadn't taken long for the shadows to take form, each scrambling for a chance at increasing their strength.

Regardless of the consequences.

Emiko was just glad her girls didn't remember much of their time in the village. It was only supposed to be until the fighting died down, a month at most, but they'd underestimated Naraku's thirst for power—and his ability to manipulate others.

As content as she was to live out her life within the safety of the cottage, and Kagome's barrier, Emiko knew it wasn't what was best for them. Kagura deserved the freedom of the open air, and Kagome—

Kagome deserved to be happy.

She couldn't argue the prince's need for vengeance—his ability to protect his own had been called into question—but his stubbornness rivalled that of the queen, constantly refusing any and all help. It didn't need to be a solo mission, especially with the pattern of the vile spider going to ground every winter.

If nothing else, it would quell the loneliness in the fated pair. But as her daughter's sobs sounded from behind her bedroom door, Emiko was forced to put her foot down.

She stood tall, eyes blazing, and the beast was once again reminded of the warrior within. "If you don't find him this time, don't come back."

Chapter 47: Nativity

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Emiko's ultimatum stung, but he couldn't fault her for it. If the roles had been reversed, his mother would've said the same thing to Kagome. Though knowing Kagome, she'd have had the entire shiro out looking for the spider, so perhaps there wouldn't have been a need for such harsh words.

He gave Emiko a stiff nod but didn't move, not wanting to give her more reason to hate him.

He would say goodbye to Kagome first.

Her sister eventually emerged from the bedroom, ruby eyes spouting fire. "The only reason you're not in pieces right now is because she told me not to do anything," she seethed, youki whipping her hair around as she stepped outside. "I'm going hunting." Plucking a feather from her hair, she took to the skies, the rippling of the barrier signalling her exit.

When Kagome finally joined them, her eyes were dry, but her face was splotchy, reiki coming out in spurts as she attempted to control her emotions. The beast stepped forward, nudging her hand with his muzzle.

She dropped to her knees, enveloping him in a fierce hug. "Be safe. Come back soon." He met Emiko's gaze over Kagome's shoulder, then licked her cheek, apologizing in the only way he knew how. "It's alright," she said, the tightening of her grip belying her forgiving nature.

He did not deserve her.

Lingering longer than he should, he indulged in her embrace, allowing the scent of honeyed citrus to permeate his senses.

He would miss her just as much as she did him.

Happy Holidays everyone! Hope y'all had a wonderful day and spent it with people that love and appreciate you.

Chapter 48: Halcyon

Chapter Text

Freshly sprouted grass crunched under their feet, birds and bugs scattering as they walked through the forest, Kagome's bow strapped to her back.

"Are you sure you're up for this?" Kagura asked, giving her sister a sideways glance.

Kagome's nod was firm. Determined. "I can't stay inside all spring." Her fingers tightened around the strap of her quiver, a slightly wilted rose tucked between the fletching. "As much as I'd like to."

"At least you admit it." Kagura's grin turned into a chuckle when Kagome poked her in the ribs.

"You don't have to rub it in," she grumbled.

"Someone has to." Kagura dodged the second poke, spinning around a tree. "We're supposed to be hunting game, not each other!" As harsh as winter was, it hadn't taken long for the ground to thaw. And perhaps it was better that way since it forced Kagome out of the cocoon of depression she'd hidden away in.

It was worse than last year, seeping deep into her bones. There were times when Kagome thought she'd never be warm again.

In the end, it hadn't even been the rose sitting on the cottage stoop that had pulled her out of the shadows, but the way her robes fit. She'd convinced herself to get dressed one morning only to find more fabric left over on her obi than usual.

She'd lost weight.

The physical manifestation was startling enough, but she suddenly realized why she'd been unable to help with the household chores. Her mother hadn't said anything, but she'd been the one to collect water lately, Kagome struggling even to lift the pale.

The shame had lit a fire in her soul, giving her the energy to eat a proper meal for the first time in weeks.

She would not let herself waste away.

Chapter 49: Cajole

Chapter Text

Kagura was the most vocal, always serving her first and giving her the larger portion, even if most of it was left on her plate. As brash as her sister was, her patience knew no bounds, staying at the table much longer than needed, never making Kagome's measly bites feel rushed.

Kagura and Emiko had stared at Kagome in shock when she'd not only finished her plate one morning but asked for seconds, Kagura giving her an encouraging smile before quickly handing over more rice. It had been slow goings, nausea clawing at her insides, but she'd managed to keep everything down, focusing on the strength she knew it would give her.

The fresh air helped too.

Kagura had made her wait a few days before they'd gone hunting, but she'd been eager nonetheless, happy that her sister was showing improvement, a willingness to try.

"Should we start with something small?" Kagura asked, falling back in step with her.

"Probably a good idea. None of the larger game will be out right now. And we don't want to attract—" A startled scream sounded through the trees, the women increasing their pace until they came to a fallen tree.

A man was kneeling next to it, arm caught under one of the larger branches, sandy hair askew as he struggled to pull free.

"Did you hear a tree fall?" Kagura asked. Kagome shook her head, lifting her bow from her shoulder.

Chapter 50: Lodestar

Chapter Text

They stayed on the outskirts of the fallen tree, eyes never leaving the man, weapons at the ready.

"Are you alright?" Kagome called.

The man looked up, relief washing over his face. "Thank goodness! I thought I'd be stuck here forever!" The twins shared a look, Kagura's eyes narrowing.

"How did you get stuck?"

He pointed with his free hand. "I buried a bag of supplies under here," he said with a sheepish smile. "I was trying to retrieve it, but I'm caught on the bark."

"Anything?" Kagura whispered, fan clenched tight in her hand.

Kagome shook her head. "Nothing. He's human. And no one else in the surrounding area either." It was odd, though not entirely out of the ordinary; the forest was open to everyone, used mainly by the villagers from the shiro.

"Keep your guard up." Her fan sliced through the air, the large branch falling away from the tree, and she couldn't hide her smirk at the man's startled yelp. He inspected his arm, his smile only growing when he found himself unharmed.

"Thank you so much!" he gushed, pulling out his sack. It was smaller than a normal peddler's pack, but he still struggled with the weight, having to brace himself as he got to his feet.

He stepped toward them, but Kagome raised her bow, the nocked arrow pointed straight at him, and he thought better of it, holding up his hands. "Be more careful where you store things next time," she said. "You might not be so lucky."

He only smiled, undeterred. "If it puts me in your lovely company again, I might do it on purpose."

Kagura stifled a groan, already turning around.

"I'm Akitoki, by the way!" he called after them. "Akitoki Hojo!"

Chapter 51: Espouse

Notes:

Triggers: a little "gore" that goes along with hunting.

Chapter Text

Kagura continued to tease her the rest of their hunting trip, delighting in Kagome's constant cringing.

"He did not fall over himself at the sight of me!" she argued as they carried their bounty back to the cottage.

"Oh please, did you see the way he looked at you? He didn't even know I was there!" Ruby eyes gleamed, quickly followed by stifled snickers. "He'd have thrown himself at your feet if you'd let him."

Kagome groaned, tempted to kick her sister in the shin but knowing she'd drop the deer in the process. "It's not funny."

"On the contrary. I think it's hilarious."

"You go after him then."

Kagura snorted. "He's not my type. I need someone who's going to fight back. He looks like he'd enjoy being stepped on." They met each other's gaze and then burst into laughter, their shoulders still shaking as they placed the kill onto the wooden table outside the cottage.

Working in tandem, they quickly filleted it, hanging some strips on string to dry while cutting the rest into portions for immediate cooking. They'd done it enough to be able to talk at the same time, but today they lapsed into content silence, enjoying the warmth of the sun on their faces.

"He seemed normal," Kagura said eventually.

"Normal compared to the nameless god from my dreams, you mean."

She shrugged. "You haven't mentioned him lately. I figured the dreams had stopped." On the contrary, they'd never been so vivid, the lines of his face clear as day every time she closed her eyes.

The details had increased. Kagome knew he was a warrior of some kind, his shoulders and waist sporting intricately carved armour, though she'd never have guessed it otherwise. There was a softness to his expression that she couldn't quite place, the twitch of his lips promising something else, something more.

Did he look at everyone that way?

Chapter 52: Boondoggle

Chapter Text

They were constantly moving, the air blowing through his hair, regardless of how the rest of the landscape looked. Through trees, sand, and even snow, his fingers intertwined with hers as he tugged her along.

"Don't you ever rest?" she asked, frowning as the ground shifted again, the man in front of her pausing to look over his shoulder. Amber eyes glinted, familiar in a way she still didn't understand, and she tried to pull him in the opposite direction, but he was unrelenting, hand tightening around hers.

"We cannot stay here."

Kagome looked around, but as usual, their surroundings were limited—like a fog they couldn't get through. "Why not?"

"It is not safe."

She looked up at him, bringing them to a complete stop before turning him around and grabbing both hands. "I'm safe with you." The truth lingered between them, shining out through her smile, and she thought she saw his shoulders sag before his arms went around her.

His lips brushed against her temple, never moving any lower, and she gave him a reassuring squeeze. The wind picked up, and when she opened her eyes, they stood in the middle of a vast garden, the vibrancy of the colours again making her head spin.

"You like it here," she mused; this was not the first time she'd witnessed such an array of colour and fragrance. He didn't answer, but she felt the tension seep out of him. "I like it here too."

Chapter 53: Retrospective

Chapter Text

It was strange to wander through the garden with him, especially since she knew it was a dream. She tried to focus on his face, but if she stared at him too long, his markings would blur around the edges, so she focused on the flowers instead.

The feel of his hand in hers was real enough to quell her fears—as much as they could be in a dream, anyway—the edge of his sleeve teasing her skin. Crimson plum blossoms were stitched inside hexagons on pale silk, a stark contrast with the armour on his shoulder.

He was a warrior, ready to sink his claws into her at any time, but the combination of his deadly aura and the sea of flowers wafting around them left Kagome dazed and confused.

"You have nothing to worry about here."

"Except you?"

His fingers tightened around hers before he brought them to his lips. "You should always fear me."

Kagome laughed, hoping the sound covered up the butterflies in her stomach. "But you haven't done anything scary."

He regarded her for a moment, his eyes slowly hardening to molten steel before he looked away. "Not to you. Never to you."

"Why?"

"Because you are mine." There was an underlying bitterness to his tone that she hadn't heard before, and the flowers swayed, withering into cobwebs before creeping up her legs. Darkness descended as his hand disappeared from hers, and a howl shook the landscape

Kagome was still covering her ears when she bolted up in bed.

Chapter 54: Annus Mirabilis

Notes:

Happy Happy New Year everyone!

Chapter Text

The dream was so unlike what she'd experienced before that Kagome divulged the entire thing to both Kagura and their mother as she constantly moved around the kitchen, trying to stave off the sensation of being stuck to the ground.

"It sounds like an omen," Kagura said, tabbing her fan on the table. "A bad one."

"Like a vision?" Kagome asked. "But I've never had one of those before. I don't even do fortune telling."

"Perhaps something has triggered your powers," Emiko said, putting her hands on Kagome's shoulders and forcing her to sit down. "You've been experiencing fluctuations as it is."

She shook her head, goosebumps roughening her skin as she rubbed her arms. "This felt different, Mama. Like there was something else there. I've always felt safe when he shows up." A blush darkened her cheeks, and she avoided their gaze. Kagura could make all the comments she wanted, but discussing someone she'd been dreaming about with her mother was a little different.

"This is the mystery man with silver hair?" Emiko asked, giving her a cheeky smile.

"He get naked yet?"

"Kagura!"

"What? You're the one who said you knew it was a dream. Doesn't that mean you can control it?"

Kagome opened her mouth to blast her sister, then frowned. Kagura was right, she was aware she was dreaming, so why hadn't she tried to take control? She'd been fine with being dragged around from the start, mind still reeling from the vision that was him.

Would things change if she was the one to decide their direction—their fate?

Chapter 55: Precocious

Chapter Text

The twins adjusted the buckets as they made their way to the river. It had been a while since she'd received a rose, and though she'd been able to keep the shadows at bay, staying inside had put Kagome on edge, so Kagura suggested a walk.

"You could've done this by yourself," Kagome said.

"Maybe," her sister shrugged. "But then I would've had to listen to you talk to yourself for the rest of the day."

Kagome kicked a pebble, it bouncing a few times before disappearing into the grass. "Do you think he's alright?"

"Which one?"

She elbowed Kagura in the ribs. "The one with fur. The real one." No matter how vivid the dreams were or how often she had them, Kagome knew the difference between being with him and reality.

Reality was brighter, harsher, full of responsibilities and chores. It took work to exist in reality, so as much as she enjoyed the strolls with he-who-was-still-nameless, they couldn't be anything more than that.

Hence forcing herself to be outside.

"We should've brought our fishing gear," she said, switching the bucket to her other hand.

"I think it's too early for spawning," Kagura replied, "but maybe we could—" A scream broke the silence of the forest, and they were instantly on alert, looking towards the river. There were a few grunts and a splash, and Kagura heaved a sigh at the familiar voice. "What are the odds it's a frog?"

Chapter 56: Delegate

Chapter Text

It was the same man they'd met before, his leg caught by the reeds this time, and he clung to the bank, trying to keep his head above water.

Wary as always, Kagome scanned the area, picking up on nothing but his humanity, and they set down their buckets.

"It's like some weird courting ritual," Kagura muttered, pulling out her fan. "No one's that clumsy."

Approaching the man, Kagome held out her bow, Hojo looking up in surprise and then relief. He gripped the wood, but the reeds held fast, pulling him further along the river as Kagome struggled to keep her footing.

He gave them a helpless look, and Kagura called for him to keep still, the thrashing of his legs stopping long enough for her to cut his pant leg free.

They pulled him out of the water, stepping back as he gasped for air to maintain their distance. "You are so wonderful to save me again!"

"It's a lot calmer upstream," Kagome chided. "Why were you down here where the current is so strong?"

Hojo smiled sheepishly. "I'd hidden more supplies there, but it moved after the snow melted. I tried to retrieve it with a stick, but it was too far, and I slipped."

"Why don't you store your belongings at home?" Kagura asked, crossing her arms.

"There are many unsavoury characters about," he replied, scratching the back of his head. "My family has a lot of valuable heirlooms that need to remain safe."

"Nothing is worth your life. You should be more careful."

Hojo beamed at Kagome's words. "Thank you for your concern. I will take heed in the future, miss…?"

It wasn't until Kagura nudged her that Kagome realized he was waiting for an introduction, and she sighed. "I'm Kagome, and this is my sister Kagura."

But he only had eyes for her, bowing deeply. "It seems I am in your debt once again, Lady Kagome."

Chapter 57: Genius

Chapter Text

"I had hoped to see you in the shiro," he said, rifling through his pack to ensure everything was still accounted for.

"It's not a place we venture to very often," Kagome replied, retrieving their buckets.

"That's a shame." His eyes lit up as he straightened. "Maybe I can take you on a tour the next time you go? The castle gardens are lovely—"

"You're allowed on castle grounds?" Kagura cut in, suddenly interested in the conversation.

Hojo perked up, smiling broadly. "With the right connections, I can go anywhere."

Kagura nudged her sister again, but Kagome shook her head firmly. "That's very kind of you, but we have our own chores to complete." She shoved the second bucket into Kagura's hands, eyes narrowed in warning.

"We don't have that many chores," Kagura mumbled, pursing her lips.

"Forgive me. I saw the rose and assumed it was a place you frequented."

Kagome's fingers automatically lifted to her ear, it taking a moment to remember she didn't have one, heart clenching with longing before she gave Hojo a suspicious look.

He blanched, wringing his hands nervously. "I meant from the last time you saved me! It was in your quiver. Though I remember thinking its beauty was nothing compared to yours, and—" He continued to babble as Kagome stifled a groan.

Was this man for real?

Chapter 58: Fortuitous

Chapter Text

They eventually said their goodbyes, Kagome glaring at her sister's smug look.

Hojo had been thoroughly disappointed when Kagome had refused his invitation, finally looking to Kagura for help. He'd offered to take them both, but Kagome had interrupted, adamant that their chores needed to be completed before darkness fell.

"I never pegged you for a heartbreaker," Kagura said, ducking as Kagome threw a stick at her, huffing as she returned to filling their buckets.

"Like I said, if you think he's so interesting, you go look at flowers with him." She threw another stick to emphasize her point, this one landing in the river with a distinct plop.

"It's the fact that he's so uninteresting that makes it worthwhile," Kagura said, sitting down beside her, their bare feet dangling in the water. "Might be a nice change from everything else."

Kagome shook her head even as a sigh escaped her lips. "I'm not looking for normal. I'm not looking for anything right now."

"Liar." Kagura's tone was quiet but firm. "You look for him every time you open your eyes. Every time you open the door. You're better this year, but what about next year? Or the year after that? I won't let you waste away—"

Kagome wrapped her arms around her sister, hugging her fiercely as tears pricked her eyes. "I'm sorry." She felt Kagura tense then sigh, returning the embrace.

"You're not the one who should be apologizing, stupid." They sat like that for a while, toes eventually going numb as they watched the sun set, golden rays reflecting off the water as it filtered downstream.

Chapter 59: Garner

Chapter Text

It was a while before the golden-eyed stranger visited her dreams, leaving Kagome to fend for herself against the ever-increasing spiderwebs. They covered the grass and plant life, turning the brightly-coloured kaleidoscope into a world of grey shadows, not even the sun able to poke its rays through the imposing silk.

She'd tried to imagine an escape, to force it into existence, but the bow at her side refused to work properly, her arm heavy as she attempted to nock an arrow.

It wasn't until she'd formed a barrier, cutting off the webs around her feet, that he found her, claws gentle as he bent down and cupped her face.

"Where have you been?" she hissed, tears swimming in her eyes. "These things are everywhere. Take me away from here."

"I cannot."

"Why not?"

He looked out over the decaying landscape. "It is not my dream." He said it so matter-of-factly that she thought about shoving him away, but his touch warmed her like nothing else could.

"I tried! But nothing worked. Not even my bow—" He reached out and gripped her wrist, pulling the bow between them, eyes hardening to steel as he inspected the wood.

"You were not able to defend yourself?"

Kagome shook her head, the barrier wavering as spiders swarmed them.

"You must leave. Do not come back to this place." A sword was drawn from his hip, one she'd swear was never there before.

"Why?" she asked, gripping his arm. The creatures fixated on her, their crimson eyes the only colour in the darkness.

"He seeks to trap you here."

Chapter 60: Conundrum

Chapter Text

"He?" Kagome looked around, trying to see through the thousands of moving legs. The barrier rippled as the spiders hissed, and the stripes on the man's face grew jagged. Youki swirled, lifting her hair off her shoulders as he stepped away.

She immediately pulled him back, pale eyebrows lifting in surprise. "I won't let you go out there by yourself."

He stared at her for a moment, the murderous haze in his eyes eventually receding as he lowered his head, lips brushing against her temple. "Your tenacity knows no bounds, mate."

She shivered at the title, wishing there was time to question it—along with how much clearer his voice was. Her dreams used to blur around the edges, but ever since the spiders had appeared, the lines of his face had become more defined, though never losing their ethereal quality.

Turning back to the hoard, his arm snaked around her waist. "You must stay close. His power grows the longer we are separated." That seemed important somehow, and she frowned.

"But you're never around when I'm awake," she said, feeling him stiffen against her. Staring up at him again, she thought the marks on his cheeks darkened.

"That is not intentional."

"Isn't it?" she questioned, tugging at his haori. "If it's so dangerous, why aren't you around during the day?" The barrier wavered, the spiders barring their fangs in toothy grins.

"I cannot—"

"You could, you just choose not to," she accused. His brow furrowed, and she poked him with the tip of her bow. "How do I know you're—" His claws elongated before slicing through the air, cutting away the webs attaching her hand to her weapon. The doubt that had been building in her mind melted away, concerned gold fading to black as she collapsed.

Chapter 61: Ascetic

Chapter Text

The walls shook as she woke, Kagome falling out of bed with a groan. Chest heaving, she grappled for purchase, finding the edge of her bed and pulling herself up to her knees.

She could still feel the webs on her hands, the rage coursing through her as she confronted him. The anger had felt so real, fingers still tingling with the need to attack—to harm. She looked down at her hands, turning them over as if they weren't even hers.

What had he done that had made her so mad? She'd initially wanted to keep him safe, to help, but he seemed to know more about whatever was out there than her. Didn't it make sense for her to let him take care of it?

And yet, it didn't. It hadn't made sense at all. The feeling of being left behind, of being useless, had gripped her to the point of wanting to tear into the pristine silk covering his shoulders—of wanting to make him understand that she wasn't some damsel in need of protecting.

Something had taken root beneath those feelings, something dark. But then the webs had been cut away, and the feeling had disappeared so quickly that it had left her reeling.

Breathless.

She pressed the heels of her palms against her eyes until spots appeared, giving her something to focus on as she struggled for control, a deep sense of foreboding settling onto her shoulders.

There had to be more to the dreams than some desire-filled fantasy.

Chapter 62: Charlatan

Chapter Text

A headache plagued her all day, keeping her inside and away from intruding sunlight. Everything felt stifling, like she was about to burst out of her skin, the slightest brush of fabric making her itch.

Like the sensation of spiders crawling up her arms.

Emiko ran her a bath, adding various herbs and soaps to calm her nerves. Kagome was still so exhausted from her nightmare that she accepted the offer without argument, letting her mother fuss over her.

"I had thought we might see another rose by now," Emiko mused, brushing her hair before pulling the dark locks into a loose braid. "He's never gone this long before checking in before."

Kagome sank lower into the water. "He's probably got something better to do," she said, lips pressed into a thin line.

Emiko frowned at the bite in her tone. "I can't say what beasts such as him do during the day, but he's always—"

"There's never been an always with him, Mama! He showed up out of the blue one winter and then disappeared." She turned around in the tub, eyes blazing. "He thinks he can just show up whenever he wants, and we'll forgive him for not being here and—" Emiko cupped the sides of Kagome's face, ending her tirade.

"You are allowed to be angry with him."

Kagome's shoulders slumped. "Am I? I don't even know who he is—what he is. He could be some sorcerer in disguise."

Her mother snorted. "He would probably take offence to that, but feel free to ask him next time."

Scratching at her hand, Kagome settled back in the tub. "What if there isn't a next time? What if he never comes back?"

"Then I suggest you go looking for him."

Chapter 63: Teleological

Chapter Text

It seemed so simple when she put it like that.

The one in her dreams seemed hellbent on keeping her out of whatever trouble he was in, but how hard would it be to track down the beast that had taken shelter in their home the last two winters?

Especially one with such a distinct youki signature?

It was only the beginning of summer, so Kagome had several months ahead of her should the search prove uneventful, but she was tired of standing idly by while he was out there.

Maybe the dreams were a manifestation of her helplessness, a way for her mind to cope with the loss of his companionship. It made sense; she hardly dreamt about the stranger when the beast was present, but maybe that was because she found peace while lying against his fur.

Was it her loneliness that had created him in the first place?

Kagome blew her bangs out of her face, her fingers tapping against the table in agitation. Her dreams had never been so vivid before, and she'd never been aware she'd been dreaming before he showed up. And why would she start giving herself nightmares when she was already dealing with his departure?

It made more sense in the beginning when the dreams had been soft and comforting, but now—

She rubbed her hands again; the webs had felt so real. There was no way her mind would come up with something like that on its own.

Unless he was in trouble.

Chapter 64: Bombast

Chapter Text

She could've tried to talk Kagura out of coming with her, but the time was better spent packing supplies.

Kagome preferred to have her with her anyway.

Her dreams had been on repeat since that night, playing over in her head as if to taunt her inability to do anything, and she was too on edge to go alone.

It made Mama happy too.

She fussed over them, as any parent would, telling them to come back at any real sign of danger, but knowing they were trained enough to handle any threat.

She hoped.

It had taken another week for a rose to show up, it only reaffirming Kagome's decision when the youki wasn't as strong as it usually was—like it had travelled a great distance to get to her.

"Be safe," Emiko said, hugging them both in turn.

"Aren't we always?" Kagura said, bravado still intact.

"And take care of each other," she continued, eyes narrowing. "You're stronger together."

Kagome couldn't help but wish the beast was around to receive the lecture as well, though if he was, they wouldn't be taking this trip in the first place.

"Make sure to burn a sutra each day. It'll keep the barrier up." They'd never been gone this long before; all the scrolls she'd studied told her the protection spell would last, but the sense of foreboding gnawed at her, and Kagome couldn't help but want to clone herself.

"If anything happens, I'll go to the shiro," Emiko said. "I can disappear amongst the crowds."

With one last hug, Kagome nodded and was out the door, ready to face whatever was haunting the beast.

Or at least give him a piece of her mind.

Chapter 65: Luscious

Chapter Text

They followed the river, the trail of youki leading them past the lake to the base of a mountain, each day proving more perilous than the last.

And yet Kagome kept going, nerves constantly on edge. Her dreams had only worsened since leaving the sanctuary of their cottage, filled with nothing but grey webs and a lingering terror that gnawed at her even while she was awake.

They started sleeping in shifts, even within the confines of her barrier, never settling more than a few feet inside any cave they came across. The trees began to thin, the rocky terrain cutting into their feet as they were forced along the thinning cliffside.

"You owe me after this," Kagura said, reaching for Kagome's hand and pulling her up to a more stable spot.

"You volunteered to come," Kagome countered.

Kagura looked at her sister, then motioned in front of her, the path only wide enough for one person at a time. "Only because I knew you'd get into trouble. And why are we not flying again?"

Sighing, Kagome tapped the rose at her ear. "I can't sense his youki from up there. I don't want to miss something."

"If this end up being a wild goose chase, and he's taking a nap somewhere, I'm going to—"

A squawk sounded from above, too high-pitched to be human, and they both jumped, scrambling for purchase as bits of rock and dirt displaced around their feet.

Chapter 66: Countenance

Chapter Text

"Did you sense anything?" Kagura asked, pulling Kagome closed as they pressed themselves against the cliffside. Kagome shook her head, trying to get a better view, but Kagura's grip was like iron around her waist.

Sidling along what was left of the path, they made their way to higher ground, breathing a silent sigh of relief when they rounded a corner. It wasn't anywhere near the top, but a few trees had sprouted, their roots firmly planted, and Kagura finally released her.

The beating of wings and high-pitched screeches drew them closer, the mouth of a cave opening up as a harpy flew out, eyes blazing. She was covered in armour and carried a spear, the flames around her feet only growing with her ire.

"I'll teach you to steal from me!" She dove towards the ground, someone leaping out of the way with a grunt.

"I wasn't stealing! I was merely—"

"Lies!" Her spear sliced through fabric as she dove again, leaving scorch lines in the grass.

Kagura groaned. "We could just leave him here."

Scowling, Kagome nocked an arrow. "You know we can't do that."

"But he deserves it! Probably tried to sell her something." They watched as Hojo tried to reason with the youkai, begging for forgiveness and understanding.

It would've been sweet if it hadn't been so pathetic.

Kagura sighed. "Fine, but if he tries to kiss you, I'm letting him." Her fan flicked open before arcs of youki sliced through the air, distracting the harpy long enough for Hojo to dodge another attack.

Chapter 67: Recondite

Chapter Text

Kagome threw a barrier up around Hojo before letting an arrow fly, purposely missing the harpy as they stepped out of the shadows.

"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?" she yelled, another one whirring by her head.

The youkai's eyes narrowed, flames rising to her knees as she turned around. "Only cowards attack from behind," she hissed.

Kagura snorted. "I'm sure all your underlings heed that warning too. Your nest reeks of blood."

"We do what we need to survive," she said, spinning her spear around in a blatant show of power. "Including disposing of insignificant bugs turned trespasser." She dove at the twins, metal slicing through stone as they rolled out of the way.

Kagura took to the sky, keeping their foe distracted as Kagome circled around, putting herself between the harpy and Hojo.

"Are you hurt?" she asked, eyes glued to her sister.

"Only a few scratches," he replied. "You are like my guardian angel. And as beautiful as one—"

"Stay within the barrier," she cut in, not in the mood for his saccharine words. Knowing Hojo, he'd somehow stumbled upon a youkai nest right after the younglings had hatched. Kagome was surprised he wasn't covered in peck marks—or worse.

Kagura dodged the tip of the spear, fire singeing the edge of her feather, and Kagome grit her teeth, her next arrow clanging against the weapon and leaving it useless. The youkai hissed before her power flared, the single blade shifting into a trident, and she changed direction, deeming Kagome more of a threat.

Chapter 68: Névé

Chapter Text

Another barrier appeared, the youkai shrieking in fury when her trident bounced off it. Kagome raised her bow, looking down the line of her next arrow.

"It doesn't need to end this way," she said, Kagura landing on the other side, effectively boxing her in. "Just let us all go, and everyone stays in one piece."

The youkai's eyes shifted to Hojo, bleeding red as she gripped her weapon. "No! His blood must be spilled!" She whirled around, sending flames after Kagura. It was enough of a distraction, Kagome's barrier disintegrating before reforming around her sister.

The harpy grinned, and Kagome was barely able to lift her bow in time to deflect her trident, a lock of her hair floating to the ground as she braced herself. Wings flapped, momentarily blinding her, and Kagome tried to push her back, gritting her teeth as fire licked at her heels.

She heard Kagura cry out for her, the wind picking up, but it only fanned the flames, the heat rising as she tried to figure out which way was up. The tip of the trident cut into her chest, drawing blood before she managed to shove her away.

The harpy rallied, spinning her weapon around in a flourish before diving again, but there was an explosion before she could reach Kagome, a blood-curdling scream piercing the air as the trident shattered, taking the youkai's arm with it.

Chapter 69: Paladin

Chapter Text

Pieces of metal fell to the ground as the harpy fell back, cursing the loss of her limb as she frantically looked around. Kagome met Kagura's gaze, confusion written all over her face.

There's been no other youki.

The youkai glared down at them, eyes as red as her armour. "Cowards! You send your messenger in as a means of coercion, then attack me when I decline?"

"We didn't—"

"Silence!" she screeched. Flames shot out, forcing Kagome to roll out of the way, the scent of scorched earth burning her nostrils as she tried to get her bearings. "I will not be taken in by your lies!"

Another wave of flames; Kagome felt the heat on her face, reiki forming around her hands as she dodged again. She knew this breed was territorial, but she couldn't honestly see Hojo as a threat. There had to be a way out of this.

"Humans are all the same," the harpy hissed. "Your stench clogs the air and the land, but I will wash you from this world!"

Kagome sent up a flare of sparks, dousing the flames as she got to her feet. "We haven't done anything!" Kagura took her shot, just missing her shoulder, the two youkai moving around in a synchronized dance.

"Fool." She grabbed onto Kagura's feather, eyes narrowing before it turned to ash. Kagura gasped before plummeting to the ground, Kagome sprinting to reach her in time. Arms outstretched, they landed in a pile of groans and tangled limbs.

"Idiot! Why did you—"

The harpy sneered. "Accept your fate." She dove again, claws elongating, intent on slashing through flesh and bone. Kagome covered Kagura, reaching into the recesses of her reiki. It may not be enough for a barrier, but she would protect her sister.

The flames suddenly went out, and when the twins looked up, bits of the broken trident were sticking out of the harpy's chest.

Chapter 70: Hoodwink

Chapter Text

No one seemed more shocked than the harpy herself, staring down at the pieces with wide eyes. There was once again a void of youki, but the shimmer of her barrier was gone as well, all of her power having been concentrated on Kagura.

Kagome expected a show, one last vestige from the harpy as she sought revenge, but she simply disintegrated, ash falling from the sky.

There was nothing left of her.

"Did you—"

Kagome shook her head, helping her sister to her feet as they looked around, gaze finally landing on the only one left.

Chest heaving, Hojo still held some of the shards in his hands. "I-I only meant to stop her," he stuttered, shoulders trembling as he fell to his knees. "To protect you, Lady Kagome."

Kagura smothered a snort. "You turned the poor boy into a murderer. He'll never be able to live with himself now."

Kagome smacked her arm. "Remind me never to save you again."

Pursing her lips, Kagura sighed, giving her a quick hug. "What you did was reckless. You should worry about yourself more—or people who actually need saving." She nudged her towards Hojo, and Kagome sighed but acquiesced.

"Are you alright?" she asked.

He gave her a helpless look. "I should be asking you that question. You've once again come to my aid—"

"Well, you have a habit of getting yourself into trouble," she replied. "What were you doing up here, anyway? Hiding more supplies?"

He shook his head. "I was using what I thought was the safest route to the next kingdom. There have been creatures attacking the village, so I thought it a good time to move."

Kagome frowned. Her mother hadn't mentioned any attacks, but her trips into town had been less frequent since Kagome had been feeling ill. Reminding herself to ask her about it when they returned, she held out her hand.

She felt a chill go up her spine as their fingers touched, reiki crackling in response, and Hojo smiled up at her, eyes turning red.

"Found you."

Chapter 71: Implacable

Chapter Text

His face contorted into a smirk, full of gleeful malice, and Kagome reeled back, terror pooling in the pit of her stomach.

"You've proven to be quite evasive," he said, running a hand through his hair, suddenly steadier on his feet than before. "You almost had me thinking I'd never find you. Though, I suppose I have others to thank for that, too."

No.

No no no.

It wasn't real. He wasn't real. The dreams were just that—dreams. She was safe here—

He reached for her again, and she threw up a barrier in panic, Hojo hissing and waving his hand, skin smoking. "That wasn't very nice, Kagome. I worked so hard to get your attention."

She shuttered; the sound of her name on his lips had the cold hand of dread wrapping around her heart, and she took another step back.

Kagura's hands grabbed her shoulders, her confusion evident in the furrowing of her brow and the wave of her fan. "What's wrong? Is there another—"

"The webs. The spider," Kagome whispered, pointing at Hojo.

Kagura frowned, stepping in front of her. "You said he was human."

"He felt human!" And he still did. Even as he stood there, red eyes glowing, she couldn't feel anything from him.

Hojo looked down at himself, as if seeing his body for the first time, and his smirk broadened into a more sinister version of what had been an innocent smile before. "Ah, yes. I thought this form might make me seem more approachable. But I suppose now that you have graced me with your presence…" he trailed off, and the twins hit the ground with the force of his youki.

Chapter 72: Misanthropic

Notes:

Shout out to Inuaddict who was the first to guess (at least out loud) this twist a few chapters back lol.

Chapter Text

The barrier flickered but remained intact, the stench of miasma weighing down on them as his hair darkened and grew, peasant clothing replaced with that of a warrior, jagged spikes of armour poking out from his shoulders and arms.

The soft blue of his haori would be welcoming on anyone else, but the giant red orb in the middle of his chest blinked as though real, his hands twitching when she got caught in its gaze.

He had no weapon, but Kagome had a feeling he didn't need one, the confident air about him sending shivers down her spine. His aura was immense, leaving her reeling at the fact he'd been able to hide it so well. Managing to push herself back up to her knees, she glared at him, the pulse of her power only widening his smirk.

"You are so graceful in your defiance. It's a shame I require so much from you."

"I'm not giving you anything," she snapped, keeping herself between her sister and the monster in front of them.

Hojo—was that even his name?—chuckled. "You speak as though you have a choice. Now that I've found you—"

"How did you get into my dreams?" she demanded, slowly getting to her feet. Though mostly purified by her barrier, his miasma burned her nostrils, and she forced herself to slow her breathing, it helping to steel her nerves.

He was powerful. Kagome wasn't naive enough to think this would be a fair fight, but she refused to be intimidated.

He rolled his shoulders nonchalantly. "It's amazing what you can absorb when you talk to the right people."

Chapter 73: Vulpine

Chapter Text

She felt Kagura move and grabbed onto her wrist, shaking her head. There was something in the way he was standing that had alarm bells ringing in her ears.

He chuckled again. "You're more than welcome to let her out to play. I think it would be fun."

She felt Kagura tense, youki spiking at the taunt. "Did he even exist?" Kagome asked, finally getting to her feet. "The one you looked like before?"

"A simple peasant who managed to charm a fair number of people out of their money," he said, slowly walking around the barrier. "He screamed innocence, so I thought it'd be the best way to approach you."

His gloating made no sense, but she kept her eyes on him, not giving an inch. "What do you even want with me, anyway? I'm nobody. I've never even been to the castle. If you're looking to conquer the royals, this isn't the way to do it."

He regarded her for a moment, low, manic laughter escaping his lips. "They never bothered to tell you. To keep you in the dark, I suppose."

"He's bluffing," Kagura hissed, fan snapping open. "He's trying to lure you out and—" Tentacles slithered out of his back, disintegrating when they reached the barrier, but he narrowed his eyes nonetheless.

"Those we are not involved should keep their mouths shut," he advised.

Kagome shuddered from the impact, then glared at him. "She's as involved as I am! You keep manipulating us into rescuing you!"

"How else was I supposed to gain your trust?" he countered. "You kept yourself at a distance. I needed to feel your power."

"What does my power have to do with you?" She tried to keep her temper under control, but he was talking in circles, and she'd had enough.

Chapter 74: Exacerbate

Chapter Text

"Your power is the centre of everything," he said. "For some, it's their reason for living." Miasma set in like a fog, sunlight turning various shades of purple as it tried to find the ground.

"I'm just a miko," she argued. Not that she'd met any others, but her abilities had never deviated from the teachings in her mother's scrolls. It had been odd that she'd been able to heal the beast, but she'd done the same thing with Kagura before.

The royals had been at the forefront of human-youkai relations, offering up knowledge and remedies in return for safe passage through their villages. Humans feared what they didn't understand and tended to attack first and talk later.

Those with holy power had been the most significant threat, but many of them had been relieved when the peace treaties began to make the rounds. And it wasn't like a miko healing demons had never happened before.

Right?

"It is a shame that they decided to keep things from you," he said, his stride slow but purposeful as he continued to circle them, reminding Kagome of a vulture. "If they hadn't, you would've sought me out sooner."

Kagome scoffed. "There's no way I would've tried to find you!"

"Not even to exact your revenge?"

It was a trap, she knew it was, but nothing about him made sense, and her mind grasped for understanding. "Revenge for what?"

He had no fangs, but the smile of a predator greeted them all the same. "Killing your father."

Chapter 75: Short Shrift

Chapter Text

Kagome stopped breathing, her nails digging into Kagura's wrist. Their father had been a soldier, specifically selected for the queen's guard. Mama hadn't gone into detail about the night of the uprising, evading their questions with tearful smiles about how he hadn't died in vain because they were safe.

"Shall I describe him to you before you call me a liar?" He flexed his fingers, still grinning. "Or perhaps the way he fought so valiantly for the life of his daughters? It took me weeks to get the stench of crane youkai out of my clothes."

Kagome wanted to wipe that smug look clean off his face, but her body had gone numb. There was no way their father had met his end at the hands of this vile creature.

"I will give it to your wretch of a mother," he mused. "I've never known a human to be so evasive. I'll make sure to visit her after—"

"You're not going anywhere near her!" Wind whipped through the trees as Kagura got to her feet, eyes blazing. Kagome tried to pull her back, but Kagura smacked her hand away, the flare of youki distracting her enough to release her barrier.

"Finally," he grinned, rising to meet her, "some entertainment." Kagura's fan sliced through the air, blades of her power following suit and cutting off a few of his tentacles, but their foe easily dodged, his limbs regenerating.

Unable to find her voice, Kagome reached for her bow, the next tentacle exploding in a shower of sparks, reiki clearing a path through the miasma.

He clicked his tongue as he looked down at her. "It would prefer to have you in one piece, but I have no qualms dismantling you if you interfere."

Chapter 76: Endemic

Chapter Text

Blue eyes narrowed in defiance, and she shot at him, widening the berth between him and Kagura. The edge of her fan flicked again, slashes of youki shifting from white to maroon, circling back after he dodged.

As more tentacles reached for her, Kagome shot again, distracting him long enough for one of Kagura's blades to connect his armour, spikes shattering and falling to the ground.

He seemed surprised at that, pausing for a moment before sighing and raising his hand, miasma choking them as a barrage of tentacles exploded from his back. Kagome released another arrow, but her aim was off, reiki arching high over their heads as one of his appendages wrapped around Kagura's neck.

She let out a startled gasp, clawing at scales, and Kagome formed a barrier around herself, cleansing the poisonous smog as she nocked another arrow. The creature smirked, landing on the ground a little ways from her, Kagura struggling in front of him.

The coward was using her as a shield.

"Let her go," Kagome seethed, refusing to lower her weapon.

"And why would I do that?" he asked, plucking the remaining feathers from Kagura's hair, the white plumes disintegrating in his palm. "I rather like this position. It gives me an edge. You wouldn't dare attack your guardian."

Kagura tried to swipe at him, but his grip on her only tightened. "What are you on about now?"

He sighed again, running a hand through his hair. "This would be much more entertaining if I didn't have to explain everything."

Chapter 77: Balkanize

Chapter Text

"Like we'll believe anything that comes out of your mouth." Kagura squirmed against his hold, trees bowing under the weight of her power though she was helpless to do anything.

Kagome was steady on her feet, taking in their surroundings as she tried to figure out a way to land a blow without harming her sister in the process.

His eyes danced as he watched her. "So intuitive. Have you never wondered how your mother ended up with two full-blooded children instead of halflings? A human having a full youkai child is unheard of."

Kagome clenched her jaw, refusing to react. Just because he was a good storyteller didn't mean—

"You're not going to convince us that Mama adopted one of us," Kagura snapped, forcing him to move as a large branch broke free, launching itself into the ground at his feet.

"I wouldn't dare," he mused, the smirk permanently etched into his features. "But there is a lovely prophecy that goes along with your birth that allows you certain powers when it comes to protecting her."

Doubt had the hairs on the back of her neck raising, and Kagome cast a fearful look at her sister. "What are you talking about?"

"Well, the gods couldn't allow your power to fall into the wrong hands, so they needed to provide you with a guardian." The sky darkened, miasma mixing with the clouds as sunlight was squeezed from the sky. "But it had to be someone close to you, someone who would give their life for you should you ever get into trouble."

Panic set in, Kagura's eyes wide as she stared at her, her movements jerky as she struggled.

He only laughed in her ear. "Did you hear that? Your life is useless. You only exist because she does." More tentacles coiled around her. "Once I take the power for myself, you'll be forced to protect me."

Chapter 78: Marginalia

Chapter Text

Kagura finally stopped squirming, blood draining from her face. "I'll die first," she whispered.

He chuckled. "That can be arranged. You've yet to prove your worth. The only reason you've landed a blow is because of her." Even as he spoke, an arrow whistled through the air, taking out several tentacles in its wake.

Kagome didn't know how many she had left, but a strange heat had begun to simmer low in her stomach, her bow heavy in her hands, and she had to force herself not to throw it away.

"Let her go," she ground out, the ends of her hair lifting off her shoulders as power surged through her. She'd had enough of his taunting, his deception, but she needed to get Kagura out of the way first.

He tilted Kagura's face up, hand gripping her jaw. "See? Now there's a worthy opponent." Muscles rolled, and the tentacles around her neck threw her against the nearest tree, the sickening thud when she landed causing the air around Kagome to become static with electricity.

"Touch her again, and I'll kill you."

A dark eyebrow raised. "Weren't you going to attempt that anyway?"

He was baiting her into an uncontrolled, unplanned attack, but Kagome kept herself still, sucking in deep breaths. Raising a barrier around her sister's unmoving form, she got into position, an arrow aimed at his head.

She tried to decide if it should be the attack or the distraction, wanting to cause the most damage as possible, but her target faltered when the ground shook, silver streaking overhead before massive white paws landed in front of her, blocking her view.

Chapter 79: Knackered

Notes:

The number of "finally" comments on the previous chapter had me cackling.

Chapter Text

It was their first meeting all over again.

Kagome stared up in awe, the beast towering over her as acid dripped from his jaws before lowering his head in warning. She ached to touch him, to sink her hands into the lush fur, but she swallowed the urge, keeping her eyes on the one who meant to harm them.

Up to then, he'd oozed confidence, mocking them at every turn, but she caught a flicker of unease in his eyes as he looked up at the beast before it was buried under a smirk. "I was wondering when you'd show up. What's the matter? Couldn't find the right tree?"

The beast snarled, tail swishing in agitation, a tidal wave of youki pouring out of him as he bared his teeth. It was just as strong as the miasma, yet the image of shackles entered Kagome's mind, and she couldn't help but think the two were connected.

Kagura moaned, arms trembling as she pushed herself onto her elbows, and Kagome's attention splintered, the need to check on her sister overwhelming.

"Don't go far," he taunted, more tentacles replacing the ones he'd lost. "This won't take long." The beast lunged, but the creature leapt out of the way, sending poisonous vapour up large nostrils before trying to wrap his appendages around the beast's paw. The beast twisted in midair, throwing the creature away, and giving Kagome a chance to escape.

Her hands were gentle as she helped Kagura to her feet, soft tendrils of reiki rolling over her back as she eased her battered body.

"Not that I'm not grateful, but couldn't you have shown up a little sooner?" She gripped Kagome's shoulder as the beast huffed, swatting at his opponent to intercept another bout of miasma. Kagura's brow furrowed, watching the fight with renewed interest. "Who's Naraku?"

Chapter 80: Wangle

Chapter Text

Massive jaws snapped, but the creature dodged again, seeming to taunt the beast as he allowed him to get close before darting away. "Did I not introduce myself? How ill-mannered of me." He smirked, then shoved the beast to the ground, several trees breaking under his weight.

There was no blood, but it took him a moment to get back to his feet, letting out a low growl.

"It's a little late for that, don't you think?" Kagura snapped, fan sliding open. "Besides, we can—"

"Who are you talking to?" Kagome held fast to her sister's arm, refusing to let her jump back into battle before she'd healed.

"Dogman is spouting orders," Kagura huffed, rolling her shoulder. "Those who show up late to a fight don't get to—" Kagome grabbed fistfuls of Kagura's kimono, eyes wide with surprise.

"You can hear him?"

Kagura was taken aback. "What do you mean? Of course I can hear him. He hasn't shut up since he got here."

Low maniacal laughter echoed above them, all heads turning to Naraku, red eyes gleaming in delight, like a child who's just been given free rein in a sweet shop.

"How wonderfully delicious." He only laughed louder when the beast moved between them, blocking his view of the twins. "Did you think to hide her from me? And here I just thought you were just exceptionally stubborn."

Kagome felt the attack coming, throwing up a barrier around all three of them, tentacles regenerating after the tips turned to ash.

Naraku hovered just out of reach, claiming the high ground, his smirk wider than before. "I'd planned on draining her, but I think I'll keep her instead. It's not so often you come across the twin flame of a daiyoukai."

Chapter 81: Doctrinaire

Chapter Text

The imposing youki returned as the beast launched himself at Naraku, their bodies blurring as jaws snapped, and claws swiped. Kagome tried to concentrate, tried to stay focused, but her mind was spinning.

Twin flames were a myth. Or at least so rare that they'd become one.

"Hell no! We're not going anywhere!" Kagura stood straighter, glaring as Naraku landed a blow on the beast's shoulder before being shoved away by his back leg.

"Why can't I hear him?" Kagome asked, latching onto something tangible. "Did he talk to you before?"

Kagura shook her head. "This is the first time. It makes me wonder if Mama wasn't actually talking to herself all those nights, though."

"There's no way she'd keep something like that from us." But even as she said it, every instance of their mother somehow knowing he wouldn't harm them or what he was up to ran through her mind, and she faltered.

What the hell was going on?

"Do you think you can get a barrier around him?" her sister asked. "It might give us enough of an opening to—" The beast howled as tentacles pierced his left leg, miasma bubbling around the wound. Kagome instinctively scrambled out into the open, her final arrow flying up to separate them, and the beast crashed to the ground.

Naraku's eyes narrowed. "Enough of this foolishness. I am done playing." His appendages struck the ground, cutting off some of the beast's fur as he caged them both in. Kagome realized her mistake too late, helplessly raising her hands before being shoved out of the way, Kagura taking her place.

And the brunt of Naraku's attack.

Chapter 82: Rubric

Chapter Text

Kagome stared in horror as Kagura's kimono turned red, several tentacles piercing her chest and stomach.

"You should really pay more attention," Kagura gasped, smiling softly before falling to her knees. Naraku cackled, and she jerked as the tentacles retracted, leaving her in a crumpled pool of blood.

Kagome pulled her close, tears pouring down her face. "Why did you do that?"

Her chuckle turned into a cough. "That's a stupid question. I wasn't going to let you get hurt."

"But now you're hurt!"

"Oh come now, Kagome," Naraku said, rolling his eyes. "Guardians are easily replaced. As soon as one expires, your power will call to another. No harm done." The beast growled, pushing himself to his feet before stepping between them. Naraku paid him no mind, but Kagura turned her head, eyes hardening.

"I won't forgive you…if anything happens to her." He huffed, tail flicking side to side. "Well, so far, you're doing a terrible job." She coughed again, Kagome's grip around her tightening.

She could feel her sister's heartbeat slowing, her own speeding up as panic seized her.

No.

No no no.

The heat from her power iced over, goosebumps roughening her skin as it flowed through her. All she could see was Kagura, the edges of her vision blurring as her hands began to glow.

She felt Naraku draw closer, the beast's youki spiking, and Kagome lifted her head, the barrier shifting from soft pink to violent purple.

Naraku froze in his descent, a frown puckering his brow as Kagome took a breath, her power so cold it burned. Then she released the barrier, ice shards shooting through the air and blasting through Naraku's body.

Chapter 83: Adapt

Chapter Text

Bits of tentacles and sludge fell from Naraku, head still suspended as he glared down at them. "That was unkind, Kagome. I have spared you this far."

"Spared?" she yelled, eyes still glowing but wide with disbelief. "You've attacked everyone I care about! And threatened to go after my mother!"

"All for the greater good, my love." His saccharine smile was met with more shards, taking out what he'd been able to regenerate. Kagome still felt cold, the only heat left in her pooling in her hands as she concentrated on Kagura's heartbeat.

She would not let her sister die.

Not like this.

The beast moved closer and licked her hand, saliva pooling around her fingers. Just like with the attack from the boar, Kagura's wounds began to stitch themselves together, her breath evening out as their power mingled.

She gave him a soft smile. "I'm still going to yell at you later." He snorted but pressed his large nose against her neck. The action calmed her like nothing else could, and she ached to lean into the touch, but Naraku's shadow continued to loom above them, the ice in her veins potent and poised as she raised her head.

Laying Kagura gently on the ground, she got to her feet, bow forgotten as she placed a hand on the beast's leg. Naraku was regenerating again, pieces of flesh swirling around him, but Kagome could sense the fear in him.

"Your biggest mistake was thinking Kagura was expendable," she said, power flowing through her body like a river.

He scoffed. "My biggest mistake was not separating you from her sooner. You will soon see that connections mean nothing."

"Only to those who have none."

Chapter 84: Savant

Chapter Text

"I have no need for such trivialities. Your power will give me everything I want." He reformed enough of his body to send more tentacles in their direction, and they leapt out of the way, the beast roaring before returning to the sky.

Now that she knew Kagura was safe, Kagome could fully analyze the situation, sucking in a steadying breath as she pushed down her emotions.

She would avenge those he'd affected, but she needed the logical part of her mind at the forefront—Naraku kept twisting the knife, relying on her compassion so she'd make a mistake.

She refused to give in.

Pieces of him littered the ground, and she slowly encased them in reiki, leaving nothing but ash behind so he'd have less to regenerate with. Now that she wasn't relying on her bow, she had more of an advantage—if she could only figure out how to use it.

Kagome looked up; she was the only one who couldn't hear the beast, but that didn't mean they were completely cut off from each other.

"Why do you keep fighting?" Naraku sneered, tentacles melting under the beast's poisonous jaws. "You are nothing without her!" Crimson eyes slid toward her, silver fur shining as muscles rippled underneath.

There was something familiar about the way he looked at her, and her reiki rose up to meet the youki swirling around his paws. Naraku was desperate to separate them, his head bobbing between them, but Kagome could feel the beast's intent. His unfiltered rage, but above everything else, his need to protect her.

Chapter 85: Eleemosynary

Chapter Text

"Do you think to take her power for yourself?" Naraku taunted, miasma pouring out of what was left of him. "She can't escape me. I exist in the very core of her—"

The layer of reiki keeping his toxin at bay rose from the ground, encasing him in a bubble, and he hissed at her. "If you want my power so much, clearly I'm stronger than you," she said, eyes blazing.

Webs appeared at her feet, slowly climbing up her legs; Kagome paid them no mind, keeping her eyes on Naraku as the beast encircled his prey.

"You are nothing compared to me. I have cultivated my power for years, unlike those born with a silver spoon in their mouth," he said, head spinning around to keep the beast in his sights.

"Then you should've used it for something worthwhile," she retorted, rotating her hands and shrinking the barrier. The beast growled softly, Naraku's sneer turning into a smirk.

"I have separated you from your twin flame," he boasted, head darting back and forth. "She is deaf to your claims due to my influence, but you chose to stay away. Say what you want, highness; she will never forgive you for leaving her alone for so long. None has betrayed her more than you."

The beast snarled and pounced, Kagome staring up in shock as he passed through her barrier with ease. The memory of his first night in their come resurfaced—why had she never questioned how he'd shown up on their doorstep?

Chapter 86: Portend

Chapter Text

No wonder Kagura had been wary.

The webs had reached her thighs now, doubt and suspicion allowing them to grow, but Kagome pushed them away, dissolving them like spun sugar as she stepped closer to the battle.

Little things didn't add up, but the pull she'd felt—that she still felt—was stronger than the darkness trying to take root in her heart.

She knew him. Knew herself.

There was only one threat here.

Reiki pooled around her feet, keeping the webs at bay as she looked up at her foe, Naraku's smirk faltering as she lifted her chin. The same icy bitterness from before filled her chest—he'd said all those things on purpose, trying to separate them just like he'd tried with her and Kagura.

The beast felt it coming and jumped out of the way, biting off a chunk of Naraku's shoulder before a barrage of glowing shards took out half his face. "It won't work," Kagome said, his flesh continuing to disintegrate. "Whatever you were planning to do with me, I won't let you."

"You are mine to command," he hissed.

"I belong to no one," she countered. "Least of all, some slimy leech like you."

The last of his tentacles reached for her, mouth twisting in hatred, but no sound came out as the beast's massive jaws clamped down on him. Miasma leaked out between ivory teeth, but any last cries were smothered by a flurry of reiki and poison.

Chapter 87: Challah

Chapter Text

Kagome stood still, fingers tingling as she blanketed the area with her power, not trusting him to—

"What, no grand finale?" Kagura winced as she sat up, holding her side. Kagome rushed to help her, reining in her power after finding no trace of Naraku and concentrating on her sister instead.

The wounds were still fresh, her youki depleted, but her heartbeat was strong, and Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm telling Mama you almost died," she chastised softly.

Kagura chuckled and pressed their foreheads together. Kagome held her close, the emotions she'd kept buried rising up with a vengeance, single tears quickly turning into choked sobs. Kagura stroked her hair, managing to keep a straight face even though her shoulders shook just as hard.

"You're more than just a guardian," Kagome said, the sound muffled against Kagura's kimono.

"I damn well better be." Kagura wrapped her arms around her. "You get into too much trouble for me to be anything but a sister."

Another sob escaped Kagome's lips. "Only a sister would try to set me up with a monster," she said, pulling back, their eyes meeting for a brief moment before they dissolved into laughter.

"How was I supposed to know?" Kagura griped between giggles. "He had that 'come hither and save me so that I might worship you' vibe."

"You mean the 'come hither so I can torture you because I've been obsessed with you since birth' vibe." They looked at each other and collapsed again, tears pouring down their faces as they lost their composure for a second time, the weight of their relief making it hard to stay upright.

Chapter 88: Scrutinize

Chapter Text

"Is he really gone?" Kagura asked, looking around at the surrounding trees, clicking her tongue at the scorched earth. Kagome extended her reiki, any last vestiges of Naraku dissolving as the sky finally cleared.

They sucked in a deep breath, lungs expanding with fresh air, and Kagome finally smiled. "I don't sense anything. I think—" Something caught her eye, shimmering in one of the few patches of grass still left intact.

She assumed it was the bit of fur Naraku had sliced off the beast, but as she got to her feet, she noticed some red patches. Had he been more seriously injured than she'd thought?

She hadn't noticed any extra blood, but she'd been more concerned with Kagura, her injuries more grave than any of the flesh wounds Naraku had dealt to the beast. Idly wondering if something like this could be reattached, she reached for the item, eyes widening when her fingers brushed the corner of a red hexagon.

She knew that crest.

Heart hammering in her chest, she picked it up, a tingle of youki raising the hair on the back of her neck. Whirling around, she stared at the beast from across the clearing, crimson gaze unblinking as electricity crackled across the sky. Kagome was forced to cover her face as lightning struck him, mixing with the torrent of youki.

When the storm cleared, the beast was gone, and Kagome found herself staring into a pair of familiar amber eyes.

"You."

Chapter 89: Weal

Chapter Text

He didn't approach her, silver hair blowing in the wind like some sort of spectre, and Kagome struggled to breathe, let alone find her voice.

She was awake—the sting from the scrapes on her palms proved it—so how was he standing in front of her? She glanced at the silk in her hands, then at his ripped sleeve, the puzzle pieces staring her in the face.

The dreams hadn't started until after the beast showed up. They were always more vivid after he left—after the roses coated in his youki were delivered.

The webs.

"What are you?"

"I am not your enemy," he said, eyes boring into hers.

"That's not what I asked." He had the decency to wince. "I assume the beast is your other form? That makes you a daiyoukai, right?"

"Hnn."

"Oh, what, now that you can actually talk, you have nothing to say?" Her nerves were fried from the battle, reiki still depleted; she should've been happy to see him, to know that he was real, but the bitter taste of betrayal tainted her senses, each of Naraku's supposed lies running through her head.

"Do you know him?" Kagura asked, looking between the two.

"He's the one I've been dreaming about," Kagome accused, inching closer to her sister.

Kagura was calmer than expected, not even batting an eye. "Well, now the twin flame thing makes sense."

Kagome's mouth fell open. "Don't tell me you believe that stuff!"

She held up her hands in surrender. "There are definitely some missing parts, but it explains the bits about him being able to communicate in your dreams and the roses."

"What about the part where he just happened to never mention that in his other form?"

Kagura gave him a calculating look. "Might have something to do with the block you felt after he got injured."

Chapter 90: Fraught

Chapter Text

Kagome pursed her lips, then helped Kagura to her feet. "I can't believe you're defending him."

She snorted. "I'm not defending anyone. Especially since he could've talked to Mama or me to explain the situation at any time." Kagura raised her chin at him. "But I'm assuming he's got some sort of excuse for why he didn't." She dusted herself off, her movements more fluid than before, though she kept her posture stiff to avoid exacerbating her wounds.

"So you think I should hear him out," Kagome said, avoiding his gaze.

"What I think, is that if you are twin flames, and he knows it, that it means he's willing to give up a lot to be with you." She pushed Kagome's hands away from her side.

"Lying isn't a great way to start things off," Kagome grumbled.

"Which is why you're going to give him hell regardless of his answer," Kagura said with a smirk, patting her shoulder. "I'll tell Mama what happened." She plucked the remaining feather from her hair, her smile reassuring as Kagome endowed it with her power, guaranteeing her safe passage home.

"You're still healing!" Kagome called out as she rose into the sky.

"I'll be careful," she replied, her words lost on the wind as she disappeared.

Kagome watched until she couldn't feel her aura anymore, muscles tense as she finally faced him. "I hope you realize how much trust she just put in you."

"I am aware."

"I'll fry you if you try anything." Kagome's heart fluttered as his expression softened, the slight crinkling of his eyes reminding her of how open he'd been in her dreams, but she refused to give in to the aching need to throw herself at him. "Are you at least going to tell me your name?"

Amber bore into sapphire, unblinking. "You already know it."

She did. She could feel it in the very core of her soul, but she didn't dare say it aloud, worried about the power it had over her.

Chapter 91: Acquiesce

Chapter Text

"You left," she accused, avoiding the subject. "I begged you to take me with you, and you just left."

"I had thought to spare you from harm. From him."

"Well, you thought wrong."

He winced again. "I am aware."

"You seem to be aware of a lot of things!" she snapped, hands balling into fists. "But you purposely kept me in the dark! I could've helped!" Kagome couldn't decide what angered her more—being left behind or left out. Either way, she could feel the icy burn of her powers in the pit of her stomach, the shards screaming to be let out.

"Do not give in," he said, voice low. "Naraku planned to taint your power from the beginning. The webs were proof of that. Do not let him win."

She wanted to tell him that she would do whatever she wanted, but even as her fury rose, she couldn't find it in herself to hurt him. "You can walk through my barrier," she said finally, crossing her arms to keep the reiki from pooling around her fingers.

"I can."

"Because we're twin flames?"

He regarded her for a moment, hand sitting on the hilt of his blade before he looked away. "I do not believe in fate."

Kagome raised an eyebrow. "Then why did you return to the cottage? Or send the flowers? Or rescue me here? You could've just waited until you were healed and then vanished." Had Naraku been right? Had he only been after her power? Despair took root in her heart, the loneliness she'd felt after his departure swiftly returning—only to dissipate when the tips of his ears turned pink.

Chapter 92: Despot

Chapter Text

Silence stretched between them, wearing her nerves thin, but Kagome refused to be the only one who spoke their mind.

There were too many questions to be answered.

"Our initial meeting was accidental," he relented, still avoiding her gaze. "I was following his trail when I came across you at the lake."

"But you didn't say anything." Even from a distance, she could see the muscles in his jaw tense.

"I could not."

"Couldn't or wouldn't?"

His youki was turbulent, agitation clinging to his shoulders. "Naraku was at the heart of the uprising, manipulating others into thinking my mother was hiding some great power from them. When she refused to give up its location, he sought to punish her in the harshest way possible."

"Your transformation—" Kagome covered her mouth with her hand. "Naraku was behind that?"

"He thought I could lead him to you, but Mother kept the secret to a select few people. When he did not receive the necessary information, he sealed me in my other form."

Even with the myriad of barriers between them, the urge to comfort him was intense, hands balling into first to keep herself where she was. "And you couldn't just tell her?"

He shook his head slightly. "There were layers to the curse; I was prevented from communicating with anyone I had a bond with. So, Mother and—" He finally met her gaze, and Kagome had to swallow at the emotion she saw within.

"But we hadn't even met yet! That fight was over 20 years ago!"

"Time means little to those seeking power. Naraku wished to keep me separated from Mother, hoping she would become desperate and give up your location." He ran his claws through his hair. "We were merely pawns to him."

Chapter 93: Vapid

Chapter Text

Incensed, Kagome glared at the ground, wishing there was a way to bring Naraku back so that she could kill him again. How had he ruined so many lives in a single night?

"He didn't know you had a twin flame, though," she said. "He was surprised when I said I couldn't hear you."

"They do not happen often, but it was a telltale sign. He was looking to sever the deeper bonds." He gave her a sideways look. "He likely thought I was your guardian and wished to leave you vulnerable."

"But you're youkai!" she sputtered.

"As is your sister," he countered. "The connection the two of you share is more than two pieces of the prophecy, your mother saw to that, but it is the reason you are not hanyou. The power inside you must be protected, and the gods thought having a pureblood guardian would ensure victory."

Kagome pursed her lips. She'd like to have a word with these so-called gods. Who did they think they were, messing with people's lives like this? "Was… Was my father meant to die from the beginning?"

The low growl startled her. "No. Naraku sought your power and did not care who he had to strike down to get to it. You were all supposed to escape together, but Mother underestimated his ability to procure information. Your father knew the distraction had not worked and wished to guarantee your survival."

Tears pricked her eyes; he would've known he was facing death but did it to protect them anyway.

"There is nothing you could have done," he murmured, interrupting her thoughts. "You were sent into hiding to give you time to hone your powers. He attacked that night knowing you had not had sufficient training."

"Which is why I beat him now."

His expression softened again. "That is part of it."

Chapter 94: Ignis Fatuus

Chapter Text

Every time he looked at her like that, Kagome's resolve to keep a distance crumbled. The warmth she experienced in her dreams felt real, a comforting caress around her shoulders, and she trembled as she tried to resist.

"Mama knows who you are, doesn't she?" she whispered. "She stopped me from blasting you the night you showed up at the cottage." The slight incline of his head was more wince than acknowledgement, but it had the same effect.

"Do not blame her," he said, running a hand through his hair. "She was very clear about how she felt about my actions."

"I bet she was." A chuckle escaped her lips. "She probably threatened to remove your tail."

"Indeed."

She wanted to tell him that her mother clearly had her own reasons for staying quiet, but if Mama had an excuse, then he had to be given the benefit of the doubt as well. It was a slippery slope, and she didn't know how far she was from the ground.

"You never answered my question," she said, trying for more solid footing. "About why you came to the cottage when you were injured. If it wasn't about fate or destiny, why were you there?"

Why did you choose me?

His amber gaze was piercing as he faced her. "I am safe with you." It should've been a low blow, using the same words she had in the dreamscape, but Kagome felt her cheeks heat.

He was a warrior, a daiyoukai, youki thrumming under every cell of his body, yet at his weakest moment, he'd looked to her for comfort? For safety?

"Sesshoumaru—" Kagome realized her mistake too late, energy crackling between them moments before she felt his claws at the back of her neck.

Chapter 95: Besotted

Chapter Text

His name had been hovering near the surface, brushing against her consciousness like butterfly wings, but it wasn't until it was finally uttered did his control snap.

Mindful of his armour, Kagome was pulled against his chest, his face buried against her neck. She bit back a whimper, and the urge to sink her hands into his hair.

He inhaled deeply, the hard edges of his ire melting away, unable to mask the underlying fear as "mate" was whispered against her skin.

Kagome shuddered. "That's cheating. I'm still mad at you."

"If you will indulge me a moment, I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

Her arms found their way around his neck. "You could've just said you're glad I'm alright."

A snort preceded his lips brushing the underside of her ear. "That is something I would confirm for myself." He pulled back enough to slide his cheek against hers, the apology not going unnoticed as a memory surfaced.

"You did that before," she murmured, content to keep him close now that he'd taken the first step. "Is it for the same reason?"

He dragged in another breath, then pressed their foreheads together. "That was for my initial deception. I did not wish to keep things from you but assumed it to be best with how close Naraku had struck."

"Sounds like a dumb idea to me, considering you needed my help to beat him," she chided. Shame deepened the stripes on his cheeks, and she followed the lines with her fingers. "From now on, we're a team. No more secrets, no more lies."

He nodded, then jerked as she placed her hand on his chest, trying to pull it away. "I do not deserve—" Kagome tugged on his collar, silencing his argument with a kiss.

Chapter 96: Gambit

Chapter Text

She kept her hand on his chest, trying to get her point across as she held him close.

Forgiveness.

Perhaps too strong a word for that particular moment, but there'd been enough strife, enough keeping them apart, and Kagome wanted nothing more than to collapse in his arms.

Sesshoumaru was stiff and unmoving, so she used her free hand to cup his jaw, stroking the stripes on his cheek as she hummed against his mouth. It seemed to do the trick as his arms snaked around her waist, pulling her flush with his body.

He slanted his head, and Kagome found herself being devoured. Her sharp gasp gave him full access, and the taste of crisp mountain air exploded on her tongue. They shuddered in unison, reiki and youki swirling in tandem as they took their fill.

Any last vestiges of apprehension melted away, her heart bursting with how complete she felt. The discomfort she'd grown up with, since the day he'd been cursed, was gone, every pass of his tongue warming her blood.

Only the need for air pulled her away, tears threatening to overflow as she stared into red-tinged eyes. A giggle bubbled up, clear and bright, and she leaned in closer, leaving a trail of kisses along his jaw. "No more being stupid, alright?"

He snorted, air ruffling her bangs, his grip on her never loosening as he tucked her under his chin. "You have my word."

"Good. Can we go home now? Mama's probably worried." They were lifted off the ground before she'd finished her thought, leaving the scent of scorched earth behind as they zipped through the sky.

Chapter 97: Magniloquent

Chapter Text

His grip on her didn't relinquish the entire way back. Kagura had taken her up in her feather a few times, and Kagome had decided very quickly that she preferred both feet on the ground.

It was a little different when the one beside her wasn't laughing or pretending to tip her over, though.

His youki was stable under her feet, the only indication they weren't out for a leisurely stroll being the wind whipping through her hair. "You don't have to hold me so tightly," she teased, grinning up at him.

The tips of his ears turned pink, but he pressed their foreheads together. "I am just glad I am able to hold you in this form."

"Got tired of me using you as a bed?" she asked, relishing in the soft touches.

Sesshoumaru pulled back, the bottom dropping out of her stomach at the feral gleam in his eyes. "You are welcome to do that any time."

It was Kagome's turn to blush, heat creeping under the collar of her robes, and she gave him a stiff nod, suddenly finding it hard to meet his gaze. It had been one thing when he'd been in his beast form, but now—she got the distinct image of roaming hands and blushed harder.

They touched down inside her barrier, the cottage a welcome sight—more so because it appeared to be intact—and Kagome almost sagged in relief. Her wards were still in place.

Mama was safe.

Chapter 98: Coquetry

Chapter Text

She could feel his hesitation before she stepped away, his eyes unblinking as he stared at the house. Had she missed something? "What's wrong?"

"Your mother," he trailed off, tone uneasy. Kagome frowned in confusion, looking between him and the front door. Sesshoumaru eventually sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I fear I have not lived up to her expectations."

Any remaining doubt about how much she loved him evaporated. This warrior, who'd been stuck in his other form for two decades, and had gone up against the one he'd been hunting for just as long without being at full power, was worried about confronting her mother?

Kagome bit the inside of her cheek to stifle her laughter, then intertwined their fingers. "If you apologize, I'm sure she'll hear your side of the story."

"It involves putting you in danger," he said, chagrined. "I doubt she wishes to hear any of it."

"Mama knows I can take care of myself," she reminded him, tugging him forward. He looked like a child who'd been caught pilfering sweets, the frown youthening his features, and she had to resist the urge to kiss him.

The door opened before they made it any closer, Emiko standing tall and proud on the stoop, and Sesshoumaru stiffened, eyes wary. She raised an eyebrow, her stalwart expression one Kagome had never seen before, and she gasped as he released her hand, kneeling at her mother's feet.

"I take it he's been dealt with?" she asked.

"I have fulfilled my promise," he said, head lowered. "Though I regret I could not allow your daughter the finishing blow. The curse—"

Emiko fell to her knees in front of him, pulling him into a fierce hug. "Do you honestly think I care about that?"

Chapter 99: Divest

Chapter Text

Kagome held her tongue at the helpless expression on his face, idly wondering if he'd been hugged enough as a child. His arms hung awkwardly at his sides, as if he didn't know what to do with them, still in shock from her mother's reaction.

Emiko gave him an extra squeeze, then pulled back with a watery smile. "I'm glad you're alright. And thank you for keeping her safe."

Sessohumaru's shoulders hunched, and he met Kagome's gaze. "She did not require my help."

Emiko grinned as she pulled him to his feet. "Oh I know, but you protected her nonetheless, right?"

"Hnn."

"Good." She patted his head, having to go up on tiptoe to do it. The image was laughable to anyone outside of the situation—a human woman with no power to speak of treating a daiyoukai warrior like a child? It was unheard of.

Yet, as Kagome watched them both carefully, she saw the slight incline of Sesshoumaru's head, accepting the touch. It made her heart soar that he would go so far to placate her mother, especially since they both still reeked of miasma and smoke.

"Mama—" Her question was cut off as she was pulled into a similar embrace, and only then could she feel how much her mother was trembling. Kagome bit back a whimper. "I'm fine, Mama."

"As your mother, I'm entitled to worry more than others." Both women laughed softly, keeping the disquiet at bay for a little longer.

"What about me?" Kagura called from inside the cottage. "I'm the only one who was seriously injured."

"Which is why you're currently lying down," Emiko said pointedly.

Chapter 100: Lyrical

Notes:

A little longer today since we've reached prompt 100!

Chapter Text

"I'm not even bleeding anymore, Mama," Kagura groused as they all stepped into the cottage. "Kagome saw to that."

"You still need rest," Kagome and Emiko chorused together, neither able to suppress her grin as Kagome knelt next to her sister. "How're you feeling?"

"Like I was stabbed and then had to fly myself home," she said, wincing as she tried to cross her arms, eventually giving up.

"You could've waited. We would've all—"

Kagura waved her off. "I made it didn't I?" Ruby eyes flickered towards the daiyoukai, somehow more imposing in this form even though he took up less space. "How'd things go?" A smirk tugged at her lips as a blush spilled onto Kagome's cheeks. "That well, huh?"

"We talked," Kagome argued.

"Not the whole time, I hope."

"Well…" She bit her lip, blushing harder when she glanced over her shoulder and found Sesshoumaru's eyebrow raised before being distracted by their mother.

Kagura chuckled. "Did he at least apologize?"

"Yes. There's still a lot to be said, but—"

"—it's a start," Kagura finished. "And I can't really blame you. I'd have kissed him too. Probably tried to undress him while I'm at it."

Kagome wrinkled her nose. "There was still miasma everywhere."

"Meaning you thought about it."

Kagome gave her an innocent look. "Don't know what you're talking about." They dissolved into laughter, Kagome wrapping her arms around Kagura's shoulders before placing her hands over what was left of the wound, tendrils of reiki quickening the healing process.

Her power was so depleted she almost didn't feel it, but perhaps it was because she was waning that Kagome was so sensitive to the shift in youki, and she was instantly on her feet, glaring at Emiko's bedroom door. "Mama—"

Emilio put a hand on Kagome's shoulder at the same time Kagura grabbed her wrist. "She's not a threat."

Kagome opened her mouth to argue. This level of youki was at par with Sesshoumaru's, and she wasn't about to—

The door opened, and a figure stepped into the hallway. "I will give it to you, little miko. It is not often someone is able to sense me with my aura masked so heavily." Kagome's stance remained defensive, stifling a gasp at the intricacy of the woman's kimono.

And the crescent moon on her forehead.

Chapter 101: Anachronism

Chapter Text

Kagome snuck a glance at Sesshoumaru. He hadn't moved, but though his face remained stoic, his apprehension was potent, and she sent out a tendril of her power in turn, reiki sliding up his arm.

A smile touched the corner of the female daiyoukai's mouth, her relaxed demeanour doing nothing to calm Kagome's nerves. They were related, that much was obvious, but the ordeal with Naraku, as well as the revelation about Sesshoumaru's origins, had fractured her trust, and she wasn't about to yield without proof.

Her mother leaned closer, hand squeezing. "She won't hurt anyone."

"You let her in," Kagome said, realization dawning. Her connection with Sesshoumaru was one thing, but the only way someone of this calibre would've made it inside was by invitation.

"It would not be the first time," the female mused, sharing a knowing smile with Emiko.

"Mother—"

Kagome's mouth fell open as Sesshoumaru stepped forward. This was his mother?

"My dear son, it is good to see you back to your old self." Golden eyes shifted between him and Kagome, and heat crept into her face. "Though I suppose that is a relative term."

"The matter with the spider has been dealt with." His tone was so bland and matter-of-fact that if his mother hadn't placed her hand on his chest, Kagome would've intervened on his behalf.

"I am more concerned with your well-being than that of the pest which has been plaguing us these last few decades." There was a nonchalant air about them, more similarities floating to the surface, but Sesshoumaru's surprise was real, written plainly on his face, and Kagome's heart ached.

Was their relationship that stilted, or had he been alone so long that the thought of duty and revenge had clouded his judgement about those who cared for him?

Chapter 102: Impromptu

Chapter Text

"Though I do question your lack of communication," his mother continued, pursing her lips. "I was close to going mad before my wonderful friend told me of your little vacations during the winter."

For some reason, Kagome felt heat creeping up the back of her neck, darting looks between the two daiyoukai. Was she to blame for—

"I suppose I cannot be too angry," she said, a smirk tugging at her lips as she met Kagome's gaze. "She is lovely."

"She is spoken for." Sesshoumaru's tone was firm even as Kagome thought to laugh it off, his mother flipping her hair over her shoulder.

"I meant nothing by it."

He raised an eyebrow. "You said the same thing about the princess from Suisei."

She snorted, the tension finally dissipating as she pulled her hand off his chest. "You never had any interest in her anyway."

"Of course not, but Jaken spent the next month reciting her love letters aloud, assuming I was the recipient." Apparently, this was typical behaviour because Emiko chuckled, Sesshoumaru's mother looking unrepentant. Kagome looked at Kagura, but she just shrugged.

Now that the pleasantries had passed, and Kagome was a little more confident that no one was at risk, everyone relaxed, allowing Emiko to fuss over her. She demanded Kagome fill in the details of their journey, especially since Kagura's memory was a little fuzzy after she'd been stabbed.

"Will you be returning to the castle?" she eventually asked, turning her focus on Sesshoumaru.

Kagome had felt herself waning, but she suddenly perked up at the question. "You live at the castle? Are you one of the soldiers?" Was that how he'd known about her father?

His mother laughed outright, smacking his arm with her fan. "I had thought all your secrets had come to light."

Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed. "It was not intentional—"

Her fan made contact with the back of his head this time. "I apologize for my son's lack of manners, though I suppose I am equally at fault for not properly introducing myself." She faced Kagome fully, bowing her head. "I am Inukimi, daughter of Shirogane and current ruler of Nishikaigen."

Chapter 103: Cleave

Chapter Text

Kagome stared at her for a moment, eventually looking at Sesshoumaru and her mother, waiting for the punchline. Emiko looked on with a sombre expression, Sesshoumaru's a little more contrite, guilt leaking into his aura.

"Wait, it's true?" she screeched, eyes widening in shock. Inukimi was the queen. The queen. Which made Sesshoumaru—

"As I said, I apologize for his manners. It is not due to his upbringing, I assure you. He has had many instructors, though I am sure some would claim him to be unteachable."

"Mother," he warned.

Inukimi clicked her tongue, waving him off with her fan. "It is not my fault that you felt the need to leave that part of your heritage out."

"Kimi." This time it was Emiko who cut in, placing her hand over the daiyoukai's. "It has been a long day. For everyone. Why don't we save everything else for tomorrow?" The queen pursed her lips but relented, allowing Sesshoumaru to grab Kagome's hand and pull her away from the table.

Grass crunched under her feet as they made their way to the edge of her barrier, Sesshoumaru staying just within the pearlesque bubble, avoiding her gaze once he came to a stop.

"You're a prince," Kagome whispered, as if saying it aloud increased its validity.

Sesshoumaru inclined his head.

"The prince."

"Hnn."

"So when Naraku said 'your highness', he was being serious." His claws were still wrapped around her wrist, and though he was still facing away from her, he appeared to have no intention of releasing her.

"He enjoyed twisting the knife whenever possible," he replied.

Chapter 104: Prerogative

Chapter Text

From the hunch in his shoulders, she knew he expected her to be mad, just another dent in the wavering trust between them. Kagome sighed, tugging her wrist out of his hand.

Sesshoumaru visibly flinched, but she caught him around the waist before he moved away, face pressed against the plate of armour on his back.

"Was this another one of those convoluted ways of protecting me?" she asked. She felt his hesitation, grip tightening to encourage him to answer.

"There are those who have sought my attention—my affection—as a means to further their own gain. I wished—" His head tilted, gold meeting sapphire over his shoulder. "I had hoped to court you without the weight of my title being a factor."

Kagome did her best to hide her laughter, giggles quickly escaping her lips when his frown deepened.

"I do not see how this is—"

"You were going to pretend you were normal?" A flush darkened the markings on his cheeks, and she turned him around, ducking under his arm before grinning up at him. "Sesshoumaru, you're a daiyoukai who's spent the last twenty years stuck in his true form because an enemy deemed you too much of a threat. You're nowhere near normal."

His mouth clicked shut, muscles rolling along his jaw, and she reached up, stroking them with her thumb. The muscles tightened, but he covered her hand with his own, leaning into the touch. "It seems I owe you another apology."

"I'll give you this one since you had a reason for it."

"Hnn."

"Even though it was a stupid reason."

Chapter 105: Onerous

Chapter Text

Another giggle escaped at his put-out expression, but her hand slid to the back of his neck before he could argue, closing the distance between them. He was helpless to resist, his arm snaking around her waist as the air of indifference melted away in favour of deepening the embrace.

She'd have to keep that in mind for the future.

The kiss was less desperate than before, though just as potent, heat pooling in her stomach as she went up on tiptoe to match his intensity. She was warm and pliant in his arms, taking just as much as he gave, the barrier rippling as powers mingled.

Kagome had felt safe with him before, during those harsh winters spent by the fire, fur tickling her skin as she read from the scrolls, but there was something about this form, something that kept her coming back for more every time he tried to pull back.

She didn't want to let him go, even as his mouth slid to the base of her neck, a soft growl vibrating against her skin in warning.

"You test my control." It was barely more than a rumble, followed by the dragging of fangs, and Kagome arched against him, arms wrapped tightly around his neck.

"Do I?" she whispered, tilting her head away to give him better access.

"With every breath you take," he replied, shoulders trembling. "And as much as I want to take you up on what you so blatantly offer, your kin is present, and it is not a public affair." Every word he uttered had her mind racing with possibilities, but she nodded, forcing herself to pull away.

The heated promise in his eyes had her shivering all over again.

Chapter 106: Rectify

Chapter Text

Considering what he was and what they'd been through, it was strange to just wander around holding hands. They stayed within the barrier, Kagome's chest filling with pride that he took her power so seriously, content to just be in each other's presence.

"Do you have duties back at the castle?" she asked, leaning against his arm.

"Mother will likely put me in charge of the infantry," he replied, leaning down and pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"Even though there's no threat?"

He snorted. "There is always a threat. Some just require more attention than others."

She smiled cheekily, giving a sideways glance. "Not too much attention, I hope." Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow, his expression giving nothing away, but she could feel the interest in his aura. "I just don't want you to be with the soldiers all day and then be too tired for everything else."

His fingers twitched, and he brought the back of her hand to his mouth. "It seems you have much to learn about youkai stamina."

She managed to keep herself still, biting back a moan when his tongue darted out against her skin. "We wouldn't want you to work too hard. You might hurt—" Kagome's eyes widened, and she grabbed his clothes in earnest. "Does the castle have healers? Ones that heal youkai? I could help!"

He blinked, twice, as if the thought had never occurred to him. "There are many, but they mostly deal with superficial wounds, especially when it comes to humans and hanyou."

"But not youki. Or spells. Or seals," she said, becoming more excited with each word. "I could train them."

Chapter 107: Tantamount

Chapter Text

He pulled her closer, claws brushing her hair away from her shoulder before leaning down, the shivers beginning anew as he kissed the junction of her neck. "You are so quick to defend a kingdom that abandoned you."

Kagome shook her head but didn't pull away. How was it every little touch felt like it was the first time? Her mind strained to keep itself on track, to not focus on the growing need to drag him away from the house.

And he knew, a soft chuckle tickling her skin. Kagome flushed, managing to turn her head enough to meet his gaze. "I think I've got more to worry about with Kagura than anyone at the castle. And they didn't abandon me; you said we were sent here as protection."

His cheek slid against hers before he straightened. "Indeed. But if I had been able—"

She gave his hair a sharp tug. "If I can forgive you, then you can forgive yourself." Emotion swirled deep in his amber eyes, and she raised her chin, daring him to say otherwise, and he surprised them both by chuckling outright.

"Such a demanding mate you are."

"Guess you better get used to it," she said, poking him in the chest. "Especially if we're going to be living together."

His raised eyebrow belied the shock simmering under the surface, and she bit her lip to keep from laughing. Was it really so easy to get under his skin?

Chapter 108: Hiatus

Chapter Text

Kagome half expected him to argue, but Sesshoumaru simply shook his head, silently accepting her condition as he led her back toward the house. She was loathed to end their walk so early, but the last rays of sunshine had disappeared behind the trees.

And his mother was standing in the doorway.

"I half expected you to come back bonded," she said, inspecting her claws.

Kagome flushed, but Sesshoumaru was the one to respond. "We are already bonded, Mother."

Inukimi brushed them off with an elegant wave. "You know what I mean."

"We do," Kagome cut in, squeezing his hand. "But there are other things we need to deal with first." Her tone allowed no rebuttal, even with the queen's calculating look. Youki and reiki buzzed, circling each other as they waited for the other to make the next move.

The power of a daiyoukai was immense—most couldn't control it until they came of age and were able to access their true form—but Kagome refused to back down. She'd given Naraku a run for his money and won—the queen's wrath meant little.

Sesshoumaru had been through enough without his mother dictating his choice in a mate, or their actions therein. Regardless of their rocky beginning, he'd seen her, trusted her, and Kagome would fight anyone who tried to separate them—even him.

There was so much she could say, so much she should say, but she remained silent, chin raised in defiance, and Inukimi's eyes eventually slid to her son, a smirk tugging at her lips. "You have chosen well."

Chapter 109: Nurture

Chapter Text

Sesshoumaru pulled her into the cottage with an indignant sniff, arm wrapped firmly around her waist. "She is the one who has chosen me. I am just grateful she saw fit to allow me the chance to make up for all my misdeeds."

Kagome's eyes widened as they settled in front of the fire, silk and fur intermingling. It was different from before—when his true nature had been hidden behind crimson eyes and a lack of markings.

"Was it hard for you?" she asked, reaching up to trace the moon on his brow. "To be stuck in your other form for so long?" Her fingers moved down to the stripes on his cheeks as she ignored the knowing looks from both her mother and the queen, the latter whispering something before inclining her head and disappearing out the door.

It was probably something important, but being this close to him in such a confined space overwhelmed her senses—especially with how he leaned into her touch.

Sesshoumaru closed his eyes, enjoying their proximity. "Once we are able to control our youki, much time is spent as the beast as a means of relying on nothing but instinct." He leaned his head down, Kagome sitting sideways in his lap. "It did not bother me until…" Trailing off, he buried his face against her neck, inhaling deeply.

"Until?" she prompted, even as shivers wracked her body. She knew he wouldn't try anything—her mother was still puttering around in the kitchen in plain view—though she couldn't be sure if she actually wanted him to stop.

Sesshoumaru took another drag of her scent, arm tightening around her waist as if his very survival depended on being close to her. "Until you."

Chapter 110: Foray

Chapter Text

"You said you didn't believe in fate," she whispered.

"I do not," he confirmed.

"Then why?" It made no sense. She hadn't attacked him or even used her power during their first encounter, so why had he followed her? "You were attacked after I ran off, weren't you?"

A sigh ruffled her hair, and he sat back, lips pursed. "The first frost was imminent. I assumed that he would be vulnerable."

"And you felt safe with me."

Sesshoumaru rested his elbow atop one bent knee. "I only meant to find a place to stay while I healed."

"But you weren't healing," she blurted, a look of concern crossing her face as she put her hands on his chest. "Not like you're supposed to—something was blocking your powers."

"A failsafe," he said, his other hand covering hers, "in the off chance I managed to find him. He thought to dispose of me while I was injured."

He'd probably spent weeks staving off blood loss and exhaustion, finally collapsing on their doorstep as a last resort. She squeezed his fingers. "Could anyone else have found it?"

"I cannot say. But few of those with reiki would offer up their power to heal someone who had previously been a threat."

Kagome chuckled. "You didn't actually do anything to me."

"You were still afraid," he argued. "I could scent your fear all the way back to the cottage. It is how I found you."

"And then you stayed."

He released her hand to tuck a lock of her hair behind her ear, drawing her closer to press his lips to her forehead. "And then I stayed."

Chapter Text

"Even though I wanted to fry you?"

He chuckled again. "I sincerely doubt you would have gone through with it, even without your mother's interference."

Sighing, she settled against him, finding him more comfortable than her bed, even in this form. He was probably right; the fact that he'd been injured played a major part, but the connection she'd felt when their powers had touched was unmistakable.

Even if she hadn't known the significance of it.

Another memory resurfaced, and she laughed softly, drawing his gaze, brows raised in question. "Mama knew, didn't she? About how you felt? That was why you were embarrassed when I kissed you here." She reached up and tapped the mark on his forehead, her smile widening when his ears turned pink.

"Your mother is quite intuitive," he said with a huff. "And not afraid to voice as such."

Emiko took that opportunity to re-emerge from the kitchen, handing Kagome a bowl of food and Sesshoumaru a cup of tea. "The fact that you 'allowed her such liberties with your person' made it obvious enough," she said with feigned indignancy.

Sesshoumaru scowled but accepted the cup. "It was not so out of character."

"Oh no? Perhaps your mother should tell us the story of what happened the last time the southern delegates were assembled. I heard it took a week to get the dye out of your fur." Her eyes danced with mirth as his scowl deepened, taking a sip of the tea instead of answering.

We're getting close to the end, but I'm loving how much Y'ALL are loving the fluff.

Chapter 112: Stultify

Chapter Text

The queen gave them a week before requesting their return to the castle, though with the way Sesshoumaru's brow furrowed, Kagome had a feeling it was more of a demand.

"She needs proof that you've returned," Emiko argued.

"She wishes to use it as an excuse for one of her elaborate affairs," he countered, adjusting his armour.

"Can you blame her?"

His frown deepened as he clicked the final strap into place but said nothing. He'd known the celebration was coming, but the thought of interacting with so many people in such a short time made his skin crawl.

"Besides," she continued, "I'm sure Kagome would enjoy seeing other parts of the castle. The gardens, perhaps?"

He perked up at that, it having slipped his mind. If he could persuade his mother to address the crowd earlier in the night, it would give them a chance to slip away. She'd likely be aware of his reasoning, but since there would be no line of potential partners to reject…

"The idea has merit," he relented.

"Of course it does," Emiko chuckled. "Mothers often know what's best for our children."

"You and Mother differ greatly."

Emiko paused, hands hovering over the pile of clothes she was packing. "Maybe, but remember, she has been alone just as long as you. With nothing to stave off the nightmares."

Golden eyes regarded her for a moment before he let out a sigh. "Are you sure you are not part fox? Only the most conniving would be able to word blackmail so eloquently."

She chuckled again and shook her head. "All human. But you should remember that the next time Kagome sets her mind on something." She patted his arm in feigned sympathy.

"She left home to demand answers from a beast who had never uttered a word to her," Sesshoumaru said, a smirk tugging at his lips. "I am aware."

Chapter 113: Fresco

Chapter Text

Kagome expected flair and confetti when they arrived, but the queen seemed to be waiting for the official gathering to announce Sesshoumaru's return. They didn't even walk in through the front doors, electing to fly instead, his arm secured around her waist as they landed on an open balcony.

She'd never been inside the castle, this one or otherwise, so all she had were the imaginings of the fairy tales from her mother's scrolls. There was also a lack of glittering silk and jewels hanging from the ceiling, the room screaming comfort, not luxury.

The bed was simple, with four posts and a layer of furs folded against the headboard. Kagome was immediately reminded of falling asleep against his fur, and she blushed.

"We have barely been here a few minutes, and you are already filled with lewd thoughts," he mused, chuckling softly.

Kagome groaned and covered her face. "You are not allowed to use my scent against me! And you have no idea what I was thinking about."

"Do I not?" He leaned down, pressing his nose against her neck and inhaling deeply. "You have looked nowhere else since we arrived.

"I'm just not used to such extravagance," she argued, ignoring how her toes curled at his touch.

"Hnn." Fangs nipped at the base of her ear, but he pulled away, relieving her of her bag before ushering her toward the door. "I have something to show you as it is."

Kagome perked up, already looking around, but he led her down a maze of hallways, leaving her head spinning at the thought of trying to make it back to the room without help.

She was definitely going to need a map.

Chapter 114: Contretemps

Chapter Text

Paintings and tapestries raced past her, Sesshoumaru's stride too quick for her to take in any of the captured scenes, and Kagome was close to telling him as such when the final door opened, a rush of warm air ruffling her hair.

They stepped out into a vast garden, her breath hitching at the endless rows of bright colours. Fruit-covered trees lined a weaving pathway, shielding them from the bustling shiro surrounding the castle, and Kagome stepped forward in wonder.

"It's beautiful."

His soft smile was nearly as dazzling, and he tugged on her hand, leading her away from stone and plaster into a world of genteel flora. She kept trying to stop, wanting to memorize each petal and stem, but he refused, quickly pulling her off the path and into a secluded glade.

A rebuke was on the tip of her tongue, but his hand shot out, picking a bloom from a nearby bush and offering it to her.

A rose.

The same rose that had kept her sane during those awful months without him.

Emotions welled as tears stung her eyes, the gift hovering between them. "There is much to be said for assumptions and miscommunications, so allow me to be clear: I wish to spend no more time apart from you. Will you be my mate?"

As obvious as her answer was, signs of disquiet had crept into his eyes since they'd left the cottage, and a bright smile broke out on her face.

He was nervous.

The emotions overflowed, and she leapt into his arms.

Chapter Text

"Is that a yes?" he asked after she'd kissed him thoroughly.

"It's a lot of things," she said, still smiling. "But 'yes' is one of them."

Claws brushed the back of her neck, and he pressed their foreheads together. "There are many steps I have missed in the official courting process, but I promise—"

Kagome placed a finger over his lips, stopping what she knew would be a long-winded vow of loyalty. "Just don't get cold feet, alright?"

He glanced down at his boots, brow furrowing. "It is nearly summer. We will not see a frost for months."

Laughter erupted, and she shook her head. "I mean don't suddenly disappear again." She slid her arms around his neck to emphasize her point.

Soft kisses trailed down to her neck. "Even if I tried, you would just hunt me down."

"I would," she confirmed. "So save me the trip." He chuckled but pulled her closer, drawing calming circles on her back. She'd put on a brave face, especially in front of Kagura, her sister never lacking in narrowed looks even though she'd left them alone to talk after their battle with Naraku.

His departures during those first signs of spring had left Kagome with a dread that had yet to be quelled, and she was terrified she was going to wake up and find herself alone in her bed, still waiting for the beast to return.

She hadn't tried to hide it from him, wouldn't have been able to if she tried, as each night she'd awoken gasping, reaching, and expecting nothing but air.

Sesshoumaru's hands had found hers each time, soft reassurances wafting into her ear as he surrounded her with fur and youki and him. She'd been embarrassed to show such weakness, especially after going so far to prove her strength against Naraku's ambush, but Sesshoumaru had never sneered, never uttered a condescending word. He'd simply held her until her trembling had ceased.

Much like he was doing now.

"I love you." The words seemed so silly, so empty compared to the torrent of emotions bubbling under the surface, but they felt necessary, so she left them hanging between them all the same.

I almost ended it on this chapter, but it took a turn, so the original plan for 120 is still in place.

Chapter 116: Proximate

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Sesshoumaru's pupils dilated, youki spiking in all directions. It called to her on a cellular level, reiki flaring, and the trees around them bowed from the weight of their power.

Kagome would have whimpered if not for the way their connection burned within her. She knew in that moment it would always be that way between them, a quiet desperation that only worsened the longer they were apart.

She reached up, fingers tracing the lines of the now jagged lines on his face. "I love you," she said again, the words barely passing her lips before his mouth was on hers. Electricity quickly turned to flames as hands delved under clothing, grass tickling her skin as he lay her down amongst the flora.

The garden became their oasis, bodies entangled, the rose bushes the only witness. And each time Kagome thought she couldn't go on, that it had to be the last time, the low timbre of his voice coaxed and energized, leaving her to cry out as she tumbled off another precipice.

Muscles rippled under his skin as she begged him to let go, to fulfil his whispered promises of forever, nails digging into his back as she pulled him closer. He growled in her ear, instincts taking hold and robbing him of the ability to form words. But even as she felt his fangs against her neck, there was no fear, only acceptance and excitement.

The pain only increased the flames, their bodies fully engulfed as she arched against him. Her declaration tumbled out of her mouth on repeat as life forces merged, anchoring their connection so that they'd never again be separated.

She was his.

He was hers.

Together they were more.

I'm quite proud of this chapter. I wasn't planning any smut, but we still ended up here, so I wanted it to be as "pretty" as possible.

Chapter 117: Repartee

Chapter Text

"I guess it's a good thing your mother wanted to wait to announce your return," Kagome said, running her fingers through his hair, shivering as his tongue made another pass over the mark on her neck.

"She will have anticipated such a delay," he murmured, hands still wandering.

She would've blushed, but it seemed pointless now. "Is there going to be a ceremony? I won't have to do any tricks, will I?"

His attention waned, leaning into the touch as her nails scraped his scalp, head resting between her breasts. "No. Though you are welcome to give any cynics a taste of your power should they voice concerns."

"I don't want to cause any trouble—" Her protests were swallowed as his mouth settled over hers, the argument forgotten. The scent from the roses wafted over them, mingling with moans and soft growls, Kagome eventually pulling away with a gasp. "You're trying to distract me."

"You are the distraction, mate," he said, fangs flashing. "I will not beg your forgiveness for taking my fill." His mouth travelled lower, leaving her keening even as she tugged at his ear.

"I'm not going anywhere."

He stilled, a curtain of silver hair helping him to avoid her gaze. "Perhaps in time I will not be so obvious," he relented, shoulders sagging.

"You're allowed to feel things." Kagome cupped his face, forcing him to look up. "And there's been enough of you hiding. I'd rather you be honest and just tell me you can't resist my charm."

"It has been that way from the start," he said, sliding up her body.

Her lips caught the curve of his crescent moon on the way up, leaving him shuddering, youki curling around her. "So tell me instead of pretending to be a big strong warrior."

"I would rather show you."

Kagome's mouth curved into a seductive smile, eyes darkening to indigo as she wrapped her legs around his waist. "That works too."

Chapter 118: Vindicate

Chapter Text

It was dark when they snuck back into the castle, though Sesshoumaru refused to call it that. To his credit, he had taken her on a tour of the gardens after—

Kagome's cheeks warmed, and she touched the side of her neck. He'd been insatiable, the pleasant soreness of her limbs reminding her why it had taken so long to return to his room. He'd also been unmovable, ignoring all protests as she was lifted into his arms, his stride sure and quick towards the bathhouse.

Well, she'd labelled it a bathhouse, but the natural springs running over smoothed rock embedded deep within the castle grounds were anything but. And she'd tried to take in the sight, but Sesshoumaru's hands had begun to wander with the soap, and soon he was sprinting them back to his quarters, intent on re-establishing the claim he'd just washed away.

They remained undisturbed, trays of food left outside his door to replenish her strength every few hours.

"I can't imagine what your mother thinks," she voiced as the sun rose on the fourth day, his arms around her waist as they lounged on the balcony.

"She is likely surprised that I remained within the castle walls."

Kagome raised an eyebrow, leaning back against his chest. "Is that uncommon?"

Sesshoumaru hummed softly. "Inuyoukai usually prepare a den for their intended mates, keeping it fully stocked so they may remain there for several days."

"But not you."

"There was only one place I wished you to see," he replied, fingers stroking her sides.

"Besides your bed, you mean?" Her grin was met with a scowl, golden eyes narrowing as she stifled her laughter.

"If you remember, mate," he growled, "most of the time, we do not end up amongst the furs."

It was true, but Kagome found she enjoyed teasing him. Tilting her head, she kissed the underside of his jaw. "The garden is lovely. It's my favourite place to go—when I actually get to look at the flowers."

Chapter 119: Laudable

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The only requirement for the announcement was wearing Sesshoumaru's crest. Kagome expected a pin for her hair or something sewed into her clothing.

She was also expecting red.

So, when her mother showed up carrying a bundle of violet silk, Kagome looked between her and Sesshoumaru in confusion.

"It is to represent our union," Sesshoumaru supplied, removing the top layer for himself.

"But this was supposed to be about your return," she said.

"It is meant as a celebration," he contradicted. "They will be more interested in the mysterious woman who has captured the prince's heart than his supposed return from battle. Again." He left the room, her mother silencing any more protests with a soft smile before helping her into the complicated outfit.

"This seems like a lot," Kagome said, unable to sit down once she'd finished.

"I'm sure Sesshoumaru will help you out of it after, dear."

"Mama!"

Emiko chuckled, pulling Kagome's hair over her shoulders but leaving it loose. "Am I wrong?"

She flushed but kept her head straight, managing to meet her mother's gaze in the mirror. "Probably not."

Emiko clicked her tongue. "And you thought to contradict your mother? What a shameful daughter you are." Kagome snorted before they dissolved into laughter, Emiko holding her up to keep the silk from wrinkling.

"It's wonderful to see you happy."

Kagome turned, clasping their hands together. "I was happy before, Mama."

"Not like this. You were content, but not happy. There's a difference." Dark eyes filled with tears, and they reached for each other simultaneously, shoulders shaking but smiles wide.

Emiko eventually pulled back, wiping her face. "I'm glad I'm not the one in that dress," she said, fixing Kagome's collar. "I'd be a blubbering mess."

Kagome let out a warbled chuckle, then pointed to her hair. "Ready for the last part?"

Emiko shook her head, then motioned to the doorway, Sesshoumaru looking devastating in his formalwear, a sprig of rose blossoms held between his claws.

Chapter 120: Cahoots

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

"Is this another inuyoukai tradition?" she asked, trying not to move.

"No." Locks of dark hair were pulled back, some twisted, others braided, though most were left hanging over one shoulder, revealing the slope of her neck.

"Just you?"

"Just me."

Kagome struggled not to lean into the touch, his usual scent mixed with the rosebuds playing havoc on her senses. "You know," she said, meeting his gaze in the mirror, "human tradition dictates the bride is supposed to remain hidden until the ceremony."

He snorted. "I would like to meet the individual capable of keeping me from your side." Each rosebud was woven into her hair, lush petals brushing the curve of her ear.

Lingering.

Loving.

"Can I do yours to match?" she asked once he was finished. "Or are princes not allowed to have flowers in their hair?"

"Mother would see that anyone who said otherwise lose their tongue." He helped her off the stool, then sat down, placing a kiss on her palm as she stood in front of him.

His hair was like spun silk, and Kagome had never been able to get enough of it, running her hands through the silver strands whenever possible. But styling it took concentration, especially since he let out a heated rumble each time her fingers grazed his scalp.

"You are doing that on purpose," he accused, the stripes on his cheeks darkening with each pass.

"Am not! You just have a lot of hair! It's hard to keep track of it," she argued, which was the truth.

Most of it, anyway.

"Such a temptress I have for a mate."

She tugged on the final braid, forcing him to tilt his head up, tucking in the last bud before kissing the mark on his forehead. "Would you have me any other way?"

His arm snaked around her waist, anchoring their bodies together. "I would have you every way possible," he growled. "But mostly, I would have you forever."

She draped her arms over his shoulders, unable to tell where one ended, and the other began with all the violet silk. "I guess we better let everyone else know that, then."

Sesshoumaru sighed and got to his feet, but not before stealing a kiss, her lips tingling with the promise of later as he led her out of his—their—quarters and towards the banquet hall.

The queen's voice held her audience captive, spinning tales of her son's triumph over those who would bring their kingdom harm, a roar of cheers drowning her out when she announced he had not only returned but brought a mate with him.

She should've been nervous, but it didn't matter how many approved their union—they would fight any adversity together, never doubting for a moment whom they belonged to.

They had earned their happy ending.
