Chapter 1: Goodbye
Chapter Text
“Outmatched, and alone ,” the Kraang purred out, staring down at Leonardo with a newfound contempt. “Yet, you persist .” Its eyes narrowed, clenching its robotic hand in aggravation.
“But for what ?” it asked, rolling its eyes at the young turtle, and flicking its robotic head up toward the purpled sky, smirking at the destruction around them. It continued, its voice mocking.
“Honor? Redemption? ” Its smirk widened upon seeing the seething anger upon the turtle’s face, dropping into a low battle stance when Leo readied his weapons, and lowered its voice to a mocking purr. “ Sacrifice ?” Flashing a grin, it hissed at him. “All meaningless .”
His face settling into a determined grimace, Leo twirled his Ōdachi, resetting their positions. “We’ll see about that,” he replied, markings glowing as he launched himself at the Kraang, it doing the same.
While the alien had originally planned for them to meet and fight in the middle, Leo quickly slid under the large and bulky body the Kraang had built itself, and reemerged behind it, quickly tearing open a portal and sliding into it. He appeared in front of the Kraang once more, throwing one of his Ōdachi toward the robotic body’s head. But it dodged the spinning blade as if it were nothing.
The turtle growled at this, momentarily watching as the blade spun its way into the portal. He then let out a grunt of surprise as the Kraang rushed forward, grabbing his torso with only one hand. His eyes widened in shock as it did this, and then he realized that its arm was reeling him back to be thrown.
He struggled to get free from the cold claws of the body’s hand, but was lobbed to the ground before anything could be done about it.
Leo all but screeched in pain as this happened, feeling himself bouncing off of the ground from how powerful the impact of his landing was. He hissed, feeling a pain in his shell that was so intense, that the adrenaline coursing through his veins did little to dull it down.
The pressure on his shell only got worse when he realized that the Kraang had pinned him to the ground with its massive paw-like foot, one of spaces in-between the claws applying pressure directly to his neck, making what felt like his hundredth pained grunt sound more like a choked sob.
“Leo, please ..” He winced softly as his communicator glowed a soft blue, hearing Casey’s cracked and breaking voice begging him to stop with this plan.
“ I can’t lose you again ..”
“Hey. Future me would be real proud of you.” He smiled, eyes tearing slightly as he continued. “ I’m proud of you.”
“Weak words, weak actions ! I have forever known what you FAILED to understand!” the Kraang growled, applying more pressure to Leo’s plastron.
“Strength ALWAYS prevails.” It leaned down, pushing Leo even farther into the ground to get its point across.
"What you failed to understand is that I missed on purpose ."
He grimaced, raising his last Ōdachi and plunging it into the leg that was keeping him pinned.
His markings glowed, blue bolts of electricity following soon after. They wrapped around both himself and the Kraang, teleporting the two into the barren wasteland that is the Prison Dimension.
"No, ENOUGH of your little tricks!" it hissed, snatching one of Leo’s Ōdachi and striking the lower part of his plastron, knocking both of his swords out of his hands and into the empty space beyond them. The blue turtle grunted as the Kraang gripped his neck with its large taloned hand, squeezing his eyes shut as he brought his communicator to his mouth.
"Casey! Close the portal, now !"
" What ?!"
Leo opened his eyes at his adversary’s panic, panic flooding his senses when it flung him away and tried to rush to the closing portal. But Leo refused to allow this, rushing forward and grabbing hold of its mouth to keep it away.
" No! Let GO of me!" it screeched, balling its robotic hand into a fist and striking the side of Leo’s head, leaving bruised flesh that quickly turned into an ugly purple.
"Casey– agH– please, " he begged, his voice hoarse from all the pained grunts he made. He used every ounce of strength he had left in his beaten and battered body to keep the Kraang in place, his fingers trying to hook themselves into the crooks of the armor. The turtle winced with every punch the Kraang’s fist threw at his head.
His face softened when he heard Casey’s sniffles through his communicator, feeling guilty knowing that the teenager was going to lose his sensei twice.
He quickly shook off the feeling when it closed.
It happened in a blinding flash of light, his body flooding with relief at the sight of the portal closing in on itself, knowing that Casey was able to hold his own and get the key. A triumphant smirk made its way onto his face, and he let go of the Kraang.
"You've been portal-chopped!"
The wind from the explosion blew the two away from each other, a large amount of distance being formed as pieces of rocks fell from the alien’s ship.
But his smirk quickly faded as he crashed to the floor, his shell making a loud cracking sound as he made contact with the ground, breath being forced out of his lungs.
His face contorted into a grimace as he slid across the rocky ground, smashing into a tall stalagmite-like piece of rock, hearing another distinct cracking sound as his shell made contact with it, a low groan being heard from him.
" You .." it said in a dangerously low whisper, slowly turning to look at him after the blinding lights had faded into nothingness. Its face showed nothing but anger in its rawest form, and Leo’s blood ran cold as it took slow steps toward him.
"You’ve ruined EVERYTHING .” it roared in fury, clenching its hands into tight fists while snarling at him.
"And now ?” It lowered its voice to a low purr, a hysterical chuckle leaving its mouth as it looked down at Leo with crazed eyes. “ My wrath will be reserved for you alone . ”
Swinging its fist back, it punched wildly at the turtle’s face, snarling at him the entire time.
"You think you've won?" it asked mockingly, eyes alight with anger. Sickening cracking sounds could be heard as it punched the turtle into the ground, the sound of Leo’s pained grunts ringing in the Kraang’s senses.
“You wretched , little , PEST !!” It didn’t stop until it heard the cracking of bones, slamming Leo with both fists and breaking the ground around him.
The rock around them crumpled into nothingness, giving way and dropping them into a cave, the poor turtle’s shell being hit immediately by the hard rock. Whimpering softly, Leo forced his head to the right, opening his eyes to look at his tightly clenched hand.
Relaxing it, he saw the crumpled up picture of his family that Casey had given him. Before all of this.
A bittersweet smile made its way across his face, tears forming in his eyes.
He’ll never get to see his family again. Not even talk to them.
But he could make peace with that.
They’re all okay. And alive .
He saved them, and New York.
With a subtle shake in his hand, he gripped the photo in his hand tightly. Tears streamed down his face as he thought of them, but he smiled, knowing that they’re safe.
"WIPE THAT GRIN OFF YOUR FACE." the Kraang screeched at him, slamming both its fists at Leo again.
The ground beneath broke under the force of the Kraang’s punch, sending the turtle into the very same abyss that they had just been fighting in.
With a wave of fresh, salty tears, he curled into himself, bringing the picture up to his plastron. His limbs shook as he drifted further and further into the void of debris and stars, the dull aches of pain turning into sharp, stabbing and throbbing sensations, feeling as if his shell were about to split into two.
He slipped in and out of consciousness, the last few things he was able to take note of being low murmurs and a bright orange light. He tried succumbing to the pain, eyes fluttering shut for a moment.
But then the voices got louder, sounding so familiar that he forced himself to look up.
He nearly cried when he saw all three of his brothers on the other side of what looked to be an orange portal, looking just as shocked as he was overjoyed.
"Took ya guys long enough," he joked, a pained smile forcing its way onto his face, reaching out his arms to try and grasp onto his brothers.
"Leo! Don't worry, we'll get you outta there!" Raph reassured him, though it seemed more like he was telling himself that.
The snapping turtle quickly activated his mystic powers, a ghost-like red hand reaching out to grasp his little brother, trying to pull him back to them.
Relief washed over Leo as Raph’s mystic power brought him closer and closer to the portal, realizing that he could go home and be with his family.
Maybe even train to be the best teenage mutant ninja turtle there ever was.
…
But a loud screech behind him shattered those hopes and revelations, reality crashing back to him as he turned his head to look at the Kraang, time seeming to slow as it launched itself at him, large taloned hands digging into the flesh of his leg, and making a sickening squelching sound as it did so.
His brother’s panicked cries were drowned out by his agonized scream, the picture he held onto so dearly slipping from his fingers as the Kraang snarled at him.
He felt its talons leaving deep score marks as he tried in vain to reach his brothers, a wave of despair crashing over him at the tears that started streaming down their faces.
He watched sadly as his twin’s look of despair turned to rage, raising his titanium bo staff at the ready. A purple mystic drill was formed, and aimed directly at the Kraang that was latched onto his brother, tearing his leg to shreds.
…
But he was too late.
…
He dropped the bo staff, the mystic drill fading into nothingness. A collective shiver ran down their spines, salty tears streaming down their cheeks as Mikey sobbed at the sight before him, Raph and Donnie shaking in horror.
Leo’s breath hitched at their reactions, knowing exactly what they were looking at.
Slowly looking down to his abdomen, a feeling of terror washed over him.
One of the Kraang’s tentacles was stabbing into his cracked and vulnerable shell, crimson blood covering the appendage and leaking out from the wound itself.
He let out a choked cry when it pulled itself out, shards of his plastron and shell leaving with it.
The slider slowly lifted his head to look at his brothers, feeling blood bubbling out of the wound, knowing for a fact that he wasn’t going to make it out alive.
He looked down once more, unable to bear the sheer pain and horror that his brother’s faces showed.
He was going to die.
Right in front of them.
At least he got to see them again, he supposed. Better than dying without them, right?
…
His eyes fluttered shut, an icy feeling gripping his heart as he fought to stay conscious.
Everything around him seemed to move slowly, from Donnie launching a mystic drill at the Kraang’s face, to Raph pulling him out and gently laying him on the ground. They winced at Leo’s ragged, ever-fading breaths, and the quickly growing puddles of the thick red liquid pooling around their brother’s shredded leg and the hole in his abdomen.
As soon as he was through the portal, he opened his eyes slightly, seeing a very fuzzy looking Mikey closing his portal, then quickly pivoting on his heel, trotting over to his brothers.
They all seemed to have a collective look of terror.
“Keep your eyes open, Nardo,” his twin begged, falling to his knees and ghosting his hand over the still-bleeding hole in his brother’s stomach, trembling in fear when he met Leo’s eyes.
But the slider only smiled up at him, weakly reaching his hand up to hold Donnie’s.
“Take care of them for me, Othello.” Tears streamed down the twins’ faces as they stared at each other, a sad and pleading expression staring at a tearful and panicked one.
And then Leo’s eyelids fluttered shut, his smile fading before his hand relaxed its grip on Donnie’s wrist, his arm falling limply at his side.
A whimper sounded in the softshell’s throat, desperately grabbing Leo’s hand again, holding in his sobs at the quickly fading warmth.
Removing one of his hands from his brother’s hand, he pressed two of his three fingers against the slider’s artery. A rueful smile made its way onto his face when there was no pulse, already knowing that he wouldn’t have survived a wound like this.
He trembled slightly, thoughts clouding his mind as he let go of his twin. How dumb of him, to cling to any sort of hope that his brother might still be alive.
Turning to the two behind him, he told them what was already obvious.
".. He’s gone" Donnie’s voice shook as he delivered this news, looking up at his big brother for any indication of what to do next.
Mikey bolted past him as he stared at Raph, the youngest turtle collapsing on Leo’s ice cold body and crying into the only part of his plastron that wasn’t shattered.
Sobs racked the little turtle’s body, his tears mixing with the crimson liquid that had now stopped leaking. After all, there was no beating heart to keep it flowing.
The eldest stared down at the three before him, trying to keep his legs from giving out beneath him as he brought his communicator up to his beak.
He made eye contact with Donnie, salty tears staining his mask as he told everyone what had happened.
That Leo was dead .

Hey, guys. Probably not the update you wanted, but I'll start off with this; we're not ending the book!
And, we deeply apologize for not uploading, and for not telling y'all why.
School's been crazy for us, what with prep for the end of the year exams, and the writer still getting familiar with high school.
But the writer and I have talked about how we were going to handle the book, and, we agreed to continue with it after exams!
So, we'll see y'all then!
Also, I'll delete this update bit when we're ready to post the second chapter. Editor, out!
Notes:
P.S. — There might be a slight rewrite~
