Chapter Text

Prologue

It watches.

In a space where time is irrelevant.

Where it thrives on the prayers and praises of old and weakens at the diminishing faith of the new.

It watches.

And it is not...it thought for a moment...happy. That was the word right? Humans used it when the actions of others or themselves effect them negatively. Yes that was the word. The source of its unhappiness fell on a moment of time where a piece of it, gifted to the humans, had fallen ill to the corruption of man. It watched the events unfold and was not happy of the end results. Its chosen would fail and centuries later, when its history has long been forgotten; the travesty will happen again and the world will be lost.

This could not happen.

It needed to do something.

It let memories, places and people enter its space. Sorting and picking, it hoped to find something that could fix this mistake. As images flitted through, one shined out. Pausing, it brought it back and stared. This person...this was the one. It flitted back and forth, it knew it. Deep in the recesses of its darkest presence it knew.

"You will be my chosen." It commanded.

I got a job for you.

Audrey stared at the phone for a minute, irked at the interruption. Reluctantly, she picked up the phone and sent a message.

I’m on vacation.

It’s good.

Straightening her body a little, she narrowed her eyes and texted back.

How good.

VERY.

Audrey growled. Setting her book down she dialed the number and waited.
Her vacation had been going so well. New Orleans was just what she needed; good food, beautiful scenery, rich music, “And loose pockets for days.” She mused. Thinking about all the items she had stolen the last couple of nights from unsuspecting drunks.

Her morning had been especially promising. She had arrived at Cafe du Monde early and had gotten a good table. Julie, one of the chef’s daughters, came over and they chatted for a little bit. She took Audrey’s order and came back with fresh beignets and a cup of cafe au lait. Audrey then began reading her book expecting to enjoy the rest of the morning
Not anymore.” She thought sadly. The dial rang a few more times before it picked up, “How’s New Orleans?” Asked a raspy voice. Audrey snorted, “It’s been great. Now why are you bothering me over a job?”
The voice let out a laugh, “I’m your fence hon. It’s what I do.” Audrey sighed, “Yeah, yeah Beck you got my attention. What’s the job?”

“I’m so glad you asked.” Came a sarcastic reply, “Some tycoon here in the big apple wants you to find something for him. Some kind of relic.”
“I’m a thief Beckett not a treasure hunter.” Audrey scoffed, “Why me?”
“What can I say, you’re popular. Guy did some digging and gave me a call. Really likes your work.”
Audrey hummed and took a sip of her coffee. “Did I mention that he’s gonna pay ten thousand upfront and ten thousand more when you get the job done.”

Audrey spat out her coffee.
Coughing and sputtering she tried to reply, “Twe*wheese*twenty thousand! Is this guy nuts?”

A couple looked over at her in concern and she waved them off. Focusing back on the conversation she heard Beckett answer, “Like I said he's a Tycoon with a thing for relics and he is willing to pay big bucks. Checked him out; he’s legit. You in?”

Audrey let herself relax against her chair and thought about the offer.
It was a simple retrieval job and the man was paying up front with the promise of more.
Audrey couldn’t deny that there was that bit of doubt in her, but what's the harm in hearing what the man had to say.

“I’ll be on the first plane back.”

Chapter Text

By the time Audrey got into New York it was already seven o’clock. The airport was still busy with nighttime flights and layovers; people bustling about on their phones, running to their terminals. No one is really paying attention. “Same ol’, same ol’.” She muttered. Walking up beside a man, Audrey gently slipped her hand inside his back pocket and grabbed what felt like a large clip. Putting her hand back in her pocket she walked to baggage claim. When she got there she pulled out the clip and smiled.

“Better be careful with that Miss.”

Audrey’s smile lowered into a smirk, slowly turning around she came face to face with a stout man. Black hair, brown eyes and just an inch shorter than her. “What do you mean sir?” She asked innocently and turned to grab her bag, Audrey heard the man laugh, “Wouldn’t want to have that money clip stolen now would you?”
“That’d be a damn shame.” Audrey agreed. The man smiled at her and motioned for her to give him the bag. “Thanks Beck,” She said, handing it to him. Beckett shrugged, “No need, I did kinda ruin your vacation.” Audrey waved him off. “Picking from drunks was getting too easy. I needed something interesting.”
Beckett laughed, “Funny, an old friend of mine used to say that.” Audrey sent him a questioning glance but he shook his head, “Come on, I got more details about the job. I’ll tell you on the way.”

They both made their way out of the airport to Beckett’s car and loaded in Audrey’s bags. Hopping in the car, Beckett pulled out of the airport parking lot and started the drive back to Greenpoint, New York.

“So when am I supposed to meet this tycoon?”

“Tonight. He lives in East Village.” Beckett answered. Audrey stared at him, “What time?” Beckett shrugged, “Don’t know. He said that he would call when everyone left the building for the night. That way he could turn off all the cameras. He wants complete secrecy.” Audrey nodded in, “Good, secrecy is good.” She thought and continued to listen to him.

Beckett pulled up to Audrey’s apartment complex and stopped at the entrance, “You gonna be okay?” He asked. Audrey nodded, getting out she grabbed her bags and started up the stairs. Hearing the car window roll down she stopped and turned to look at Beckett who was now leaning over his console staring at her, “If you don’t like him or you know something is up, give me a call. I’ll drop the fucker.” Giving the man a small smile, she waved a mock salute, turned, and headed into the building.

When Audrey finally made it to her apartment, she took a deep breath and sighed, “What a day.” She muttered. Dropping her bags off on the couch, she made her way into the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water. Something brushed up against her leg and let out a quiet ‘mreow’. She looked down to see a black cat rubbing against her and looking up at her expectantly. “Hey there ya little shit.” Audrey murmured fondly and bent down to pet the cat. The feline sat down and relished in the scratches, Audrey laughed, “Enjoy it now Zozo. I might be leaving again here soon.” The cat gave her a slightly miffed look but made no complaint. Standing back up, the woman made her way around the kitchen to get her cat some food and water. Once that was done, she grabbed her bags and went to her bedroom.

A couple of hours later, Audrey received a text from Beckett.

He’s ready, I’ll send you the address. Top floor.

Another message came through. Audrey studied the address and nodded to herself, “I know that area. Good pickings.” She thought. If the job was a sham then she could spend the rest of the night filling her pockets. Grabbing her jacket, Audrey left her room. In the living room she sat down next to Zozo and gave her a quick pat before grabbing a notepad and pen. Thinking for a minute, she began writing a letter to her neighbor, a sweet old lady who looked after Zozo. Thanking her for watching Zozo while she was on vacation, she explained that something had come up and she would be gone for a little while longer. Audrey then put a hundred dollar bill next to the note.
Audrey glanced at Zozo and saw a drool look on the cat, she tsked, “What? Just in case.” The cat blinked at her before curling back up and falling asleep. Shaking her head at the lazy cat, Audrey stood and exited her apartment.

In the elevator, she hit the button for the basement. When the doors opened back up she walked over to her Harley and started the bike up. Quickly secured everything, she revved the engine and pulled out of the basement into the night. Audrey savored the rush of the cool air and the blurred lights as she passed. Once was over the bridge she noticed an influx of cars. Smirking, Audrey began weaving in and out of traffic, and used back alleys as shortcuts. In no time she had arrived at the address, a fifteen story glass building.

Audrey noticed a name on the entrance, “Watch Security. A security firm?” She wandered and maneuvered her bike to the alley behind the building.
Parking the bike, the thief looked around and spotted the backdoor…...with a camera over it. “Time to see if this meeting is as secret as he says.” Audrey grumbled. Flipping her hood up, she walked over to the door. Staying out of the camera’s line of sight she studied it.
Recognizing the model, Audrey noted that the power light was off. Walking closer, she noticed that the door’s card reader was off. Cautiously, she walked towards the door and pushed it open. The door gave freely and revealed a staircase inside.

Not wasting a second Audrey bolted in and up the stairs. Every level had a camera positioned in the corner but they were all offline. Reaching the top floor, Audrey opened the door that led into a hallway. Halfway down there was a set of double doors, grabbing ahold of one Audrey gently pushed it open and saw a man. He was on the other side of the room, staring out at the city.

Quietly slipping in, Audrey slowly shut the door. Creeping along, she settled down on one of the couches in the room. The man hadn’t noticed her yet so she took the time to look around. It was a spacious office, filled with antiques and rusted weapons. It was almost a little concerning. Glancing around Audrey noticed one particular item in a glass box on the man’s desk. It looked like a wrist brace with a miniature crossbow attached to it. It looked almost brand new. “New enough to shoot.” Audrey thought with trepidation and made a note to keep an eye on it in case the client got too twitchy.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

The man let out a sigh and turned around, he made his way over to his desk and sat down. His hand dipped down into one of the drawers and slammed a bottle of whisky on top of the desk. A tumbler came out soon after.

Audrey studied him for a minute. He was a tall man, with dark hair and a well trimmed mustache. He had a hard face, the kind that intimidated people.
The man had just begun pouring his drink when he glanced up for a brief second and promptly jolted himself at the sight of her. Audrey smirked to herself, crossing her legs and letting her arm rest on the edge of the couch to give a relaxed look, but her eyes never left the man. He returned her stare, sitting there for a moment before a smile broke out on his face and he let out a laugh, “My, my, what a surprise. And here I thought you weren’t going to show up.”

The man got up and made his way to her, “The name is Alan.” He thrusted his hand out to her. Audrey stared at his hand for a moment, she looked up at him and saw him staring expectantly at her. She reluctantly raised her own and shook Alan’s hand, “You know who I am?” She asked, Alan nodded, “Yes, you are Drey. New York’s finest thief.” He stated, almost in a condescending fashion. Audrey narrowed her eyes at him and dropped her hand. The man walked over to his desk chuckling, “I always make sure to do my homework on potential partners and I must say your reputation precedes you my dear.”

Alan grabbed his tumbler and walked over to the couch opposite of Audrey. He continued, “I am quite impressed at the jobs you’ve managed to pull off and the fact that you take such care in not leaving a trail. Hell, it took me a while to find your fence!” He exclaimed in an amused tone. Audrey didn’t really know what to make of the man, he oozed masculinity. Staring at her with such an intense gaze and smiling like he held all the right cards.

She didn’t like it.

Standing up, Audrey moved behind the couch to create distance and gave her space to make a run for it if need be. Alan laughed, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” Audrey glared, “The job.” She gritted out. Her tone made Alan frown and he raised his hands in mock surrender, “Alright. I’m sure your fence already told you. I need you to find an item for me. A stone.”

“You want me to find a rock?” Once the word ‘rock’ left her lips, Alan growled.

“This isn’t just some rock! This is a very rare and distinct stone. I’ve been searching for it for a very long time.” He got up and walked over to a cupboard. Pulling out one of the drawers, he grabbed something and quickly shut it. Alan walked back and handed her a thin piece of paper. The first thing Audrey noticed was how old the parchment was; the page was a dirty yellow and the edges were ripped and frayed. There was an image on the paper and writing all around it.

The image was colored blue and looked rectangular. Reading over some of the writing, there was a description stating that it was the size of your palm and was warm to the touch. At the top of the page, underlined, was a word: Primal. The word gave her an odd feeling.
“What the hell is a Primal?” She wondered, scanning over the page for any more information. The rest of the writing was a bit faded and most of it was just ramblings. However, at the very bottom were initials that read ‘TMT’. Glancing up at Alan, she let out a sigh, “I was told that the…stone...was on an island.”

“Yes. You’ll be provided transportation and appropriate diving gear for the job.”

“Diving gear?” She asked. Alan sat down at his desk, “There is a possibility that the stone might have made its way into a cave. We’re just checking all the boxes.” He smiled but it was off. Audrey stared at him for a moment and an uneasy feeling settled in her stomach before she nodded, “When would I leave?”

Alan looked at his watch, “As soon as possible, I have a private jet standing by. The plane ride will be long so you will be able to get some rest. And when you get to England, you will be taken to the boat that will bring you to the island. It will be up to you from there.”
Audrey mentally groaned, “Fuck me, I gonna be sore tomorrow.

“You really want this stone don’t you?”

Alan let out what sounded like a mix between a laugh and a huff, “Oh, yes. It’s very special.” He stated, with a melancholy tone. Audrey thought for a moment, “And the payment?” Alan rolled his eyes, “The first half will be deposited the minute you say yes and the rest will come once the stone is in my possession.”
Audrey stared at Alan, waiting for the snag, but he just stood there smiling back at her.
Just take the job. It’s easy money.” Her mind poked, “What could go wrong?

Chapter Text

Hours later, Audrey found herself in a small run down port on the southern tip of England. Alan had been right, the plane ride was long and she was able to get some sleep, but now she could definitely feel those predicted aches in her body. Looking around, Audrey saw a few people out and about but nothing too crowded.
Checking around for cameras, the thief happily noted that there were none and lowered her scarf. Taking in a deep breath, she let the salty air fill her body and released a sigh. It was nice to finally take off her cover.

Walking forward, Audrey began looking for the boat Alan promised. He said it would be in port number seven. She began counting down the ports,
eleven……..ten……...nine……...eight…….and sev-” Out of nowhere a body slammed into her and she fell to the ground, “Fuck! What the hell?” She exclaimed and glared up at the person. The person above her was a man. He was wearing dark clothes, his face was covered with a hood and a face mask, “Sorry about that.” The man whispered and Audrey had to strain her ears to hear him.

She huffed and soon felt sheepish realizing that she was partially at fault, “No it’s okay. I wasn’t paying attention either.” He nodded and held out his hand. Audrey grabbed it and heft herself up. Without warning, the man pulled her in close enough that his lips brushed her ear. Panic gripped her and Audrey was getting ready to shove the man away but his next words made her stop, “Be safe Audrey.” He whispered. And just as quick as he pulled her in, the man let go and vanished.

Audrey was in complete shock, her mind racing, “How did he know my name? Only Beckett knows my real name.” She frantically searched the area, “Where the hell did he go?” Audrey questioned, hoping to spot the mysterious man but to no avail. She then patted herself down and felt relief when she concluded that nothing had been stolen from her during the encounter.
Warily, she threw her bag over her shoulder and secured her scarf over her face, then continued onto dock seven.

She found a motorboat with red trim and an old burly man waved at her from under the awning. “Ahoy M’lady!” He cried, Audrey smiled and nodded at the man. He walked over to the ledge and offered his hand, “Name’s Mortemer, Captain Mortemer, and this fine vessel is the Red Herring. You must be Miss Masters.”

Nodding at her fake name, she replied, “Hello Mortemer and yes, I am. Mr. Alan called ahead I presume?” The man smiled and helped her into the boat.
“Indeed Miss. He sent all yer’ fancy gear ahead. We’ll be heading for the spot here soon.” He motioned to some stairs behind him, “There is a cabin below, feel free to make yourself comfortable. I need to talk to the dockmaster before we head out.”
Audrey stepped aside so Mortemer could heave himself out of the boat. She watched as he walked down the dock to a building before disappearing inside, “What a pleasant man.” She noted and descended into the cabin.

Audrey glanced around, taking note of the clean and organized interior. There was a sitting booth to her right and a small kitchenette to her left, further down there were two doors to the right and one door on the left that was open. Assuming that the two on the right were the bathroom and the captain’s quarters, she walked into the room on the left.
Audrey spotted the diving equipment and a wetsuit on the bunk, “We’re just checking all the boxes.” She remembered Alan saying and she scoffed, “Yeah sure you are.” She muttered and closed the door.

Setting down her bag, she unzipped it and pulled out a black one piece swimsuit. Audrey began taking off her clothes, shoving them into a waterproof bag as well as all of her tools. A lockpick, some rope, magnets, a five piece multi screwdriver and her expandable vaulting pole. Securing the bag, Audrey continued dressing herself. Once the one piece was on, she slipped the wetsuit right over and zipped it up. She rewrapped her scarf around her face and deemed herself ready.
Grabbing the water proof bag and the rest of the gear, she opened the door and made her way back up.

Mortemer had returned. He was on the dock and looked like he was in the process of casting off. Spotting Audrey he motioned for her, “Come help me real quick. I’m not as young as I used to be.” Setting everything down, Audrey quickly jogged over, hopped up and grabbed the rope from Mortemer.
He jumped back into the boat, “When I tell ya to push, you push against the boat as hard as you can and then jump back in the boat as soon as possible. Wouldn’t want you divin’ in the water just yet.” The man joked and Audrey couldn’t help but let out a chuckle, “Yeah, doesn’t look too warm right now.” She commented.

Mortemer went up and took the helm, “Ready?” He exclaimed and Audrey nodded. He started up the engine, “Push!” Audrey pushed with all her might and when she felt the boat leave her finger tips, she quickly ran forward and jumped onto the boat. Mortemer let out a hollar, “Nice job Miss. We’ll be out of here in no time.” Smiling, Audrey shook her head at the happy captain. She dusted herself off and looked back at the pier.

Audrey felt her breath catch in her throat.

Rushing forward, Audrey gripped the railing on the back of the boat and stared. Standing on the edge of the dock, was the man. “Just my luck.” She groaned and leaned forward onto her elbows. She glared at the man, from what she could tell he was staring right back. “Who are you?” She muttered to the wind.

For a second Audrey thought that he had heard her. The man tilted his head as if considering something and then shook his head in denial. Staring at her once more, he waved at her and then walked away. Disappearing behind a building.

Audrey watched the pier for a while longer, praying that the man would come back. That he would give her some kind of hint as to who he was. But, as the pier began to fade in the distance, she realized that it was hopeless. Sighing, Audrey straightened herself up and joined Mortemer under the awning.
“Fine day isn’t it Miss?” He smiled. Audrey surveyed the area before replying, “It’s a bit overcast isn’t it? I thought sailors liked sunny days.”

Mortemer nodded, “Aye, a sunny day is nice but we got good winds and the current on our side today. Sometimes a sunny day might just have you sittin’ on your arse all day, bobbin’ in the water like a cork.” Audrey laughed at that. He glanced at her scarf, “You gonna wear that the whole time?” Audrey nodded, “Lucky scarf.” The old Captain laughed, “I understand lass. Need all the luck out here sometimes.”

“Speaking of luck,” The man began somberly, “I got to be honest Miss, where we’re going isn’t somewhere I would recommend.” Audrey watched Mortemer closely, she noticed that he looked nervous and his body was more tense. “Why is that Mortemer?” She asked and the man glanced at her, “Well, you see, there are some stories about that spot. Stories that have been around for a long time.”

“What stories?”

Mortemer shook his head, “It’s nothing Miss, just some old tales that even spook this old monger.” The man chuckled, pointing to himself. “Besides, we’re just going there to....to...actually Miss what are you doing out there?”
“Mr. Alan didn’t tell you?” She asked, surprised. Audrey thought Alan would have told the Captain something. Mortemer shook his head, “No Miss. Never really tells me anything to be honest. I just ship things for him from time to time. Rusty weapons and such. Never actually had to transport someone before.”

Audrey nodded thoughtfully, “Well, thank you for taking me.”

Mortemer nodded, “No problem Miss. Now, why are we heading out there again?”

She had an idea, but it was a stretch.

“I’m a geologist. I’m here to study the minerals and soil of the island. Possibly bring back some rock samples.” Mortemer nodded, “Ah, okay. Haven’t seen a geologist here in a long time. Find something?”

“Yes, I’m an old acquaintance of his. A few weeks ago, I stopped by his office and saw one of his swords. I didn’t recognize any of the minerals on it.” She lied, “Curiosity got the best of me.”
Mortemer chuckled, “You scientists. Always curious.” Audrey chuckled along, “Yes, speaking about curiosity. I’m a little more interested in those spooky stories now, Captain. Care to tell me about them?”

Mortemer sighed, “I suppose it’s fair. I did mention them and you did answer my question.” Audrey sat down and crossed her legs, to give the Captain her full attention. She had always been a sucker for a good ghost story. Continuing to steer, Mortemer began to speak.

“First off Miss, I see that Mr. Alan failed to mention that we’re not technically going to an island.” Audrey gave him a confused look and the man chuckled, “What I mean is that it used to be an island but, well…I’ll wait until we get there. Would hate to ruin the surprise.” He winked, “Anyway, the spot that we’re going to, used to be inhabited. Centuries ago, there was a thriving city. Bountiful fishing, good exports, very progressive.”

Audrey wanted to snort at that. A progressive city in what sounded like medieval times, that must have been interesting. Mortemer continued, “There were all types of people there. Lords, ladies, barons, courtesans, beggars and thieves.”

Audrey felt her lip twitch.

“The tale goes that something happened on the evening of a grand celebration. There was a bright light that engulfed the city and the city slowly began to die.”

“Die?”

“Yes, die. They say it was like something was sucking the life out of the people; out of the very city itself. People started disappearing. There were riots, executions, hell there were even rumors of monsters roaming the underground. Then one day it all stopped.”

“What do you mean it ‘stopped’? Monsters would be a little hard to stop in my opinion.” Audrey stated and Mortemer shrugged, “Not really sure on that one Miss. I’m only the storyteller.”

“So what happened?” Mortemer shrugged, “No one knows. The city began to heal and it was fine for several years but then it just kind of fell apart.”

Audrey squinted at the man, that was a load of bullshit and Mortemer knew it. So what wasn’t he telling her? “So why all the ghost stories?” Mortemer pulled a lever and the boat began to slow down, “Cause Miss, for years people have gone to this spot. For answers, science,” He looks at her, “Treasure.”
Audrey felt a slight tremor run through her. She didn’t like where this was going.
“They all go to the spot and they don’t come back.”

And it went there.

Chapter Text

By the time the boat had come to a complete stop. Audrey could only see a single floating buoy thousands of miles out in front of them. “Why have we stopped?” She asked. Turning, she saw Mortemer drop the anchor, “What?”

Audrey stared at him, confused. “There is nothing here except for that buoy.” She gestured. Mortemer looked and started chuckling, “We are right where we need to be Miss.” He walked over to a box, grabbed a map and handed it to her. Not really understanding, Audrey looked over the map. The Captain leaned over and pointed at the symbol of a clock, “We’re over the clock tower now. That,” He said, pointing to the bouy, “Is the old rooftop of the Baron’s Mansion.”

Audrey stared at the object and then looked back down. The pieces began to click and it finally hit Audrey,

“We’re on top of it!” She exclaimed and raced over to the side. Looking down at the water she tried to catch a glimpse of the sunken city but the waters were too dark. “That’s right lass.” Mortemer replied. “Surprise! I hope you have a map cause you're gonna get lost down there if you’re not careful.”

Audrey considered the warning. Walking over to the scuba gear, she patted around for a pocket and found one. Inside was a laminated map of the city, “Bastard knew.” She thought, studying the map.
There was an ‘x’ over the clocktower and a path drawn all the way to the symbol of a cross. A cathedral. “The stone is in a cathedral?” Audrey muttered to herself. Looking closer, she realized something, “The stone is under a cathedral.” Written out to the side, was a description of an underwater tunnel that would lead her all the way to an air pocket below the cathedral. Putting the map back in the pocket, she began prepping for the dive.

Checking the fuel, she saw that she had enough for the trip in and out. Audrey unwrapped her scarf and put it in the waterproof bag. She then snapped the bag around her waist and dragged everything to the edge of the boat. Sitting down, she began strapping everything on.

Audrey had just gotten the goggles on when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Looking up, she saw Mortemer trying to hand her a large flashlight, “You’re gonna need this.” She took it from him, tested the battery, and smiled, “Thank you.”
He nodded, “Listen Miss, earlier when I was tellin’ you that stuff. I didn’t mean to scare ya or anything.” He gave Audrey a small smile, “To be honest, you’re the first person to come to this place in a long time and I think you’re gonna be just fine. Got that good feelin’ about ya.” Mortemer stated.

Audrey didn’t really know what to say to that. “Good feeling means not mysteriously disappearing…right?” Her mind wandered hopefully. She raised the mouthpiece up, “See you soon Captain.” Fitting the piece in place, Audrey slid off the boat and entered the dark waters.

As soon as she had sunk deep enough, Audrey turned on the light and illuminated the area around her. Looking around she saw the clock tower right behind her. It loomed ominously above her, casting her in its shadow.
Taking out her map, she turned back around and began swimming towards her destination.

Along the way, she swept her light over the sunken ruins. Discovering bits and pieces of what was once a city full of people, and was now a home for the local flora and fauna. Audrey continued on, checking the map every now and then and looking at random objects or buildings. She soon came to the mouth of a cave, “This is it.” Audrey confirmed and entered. If she thought the town was dark, then the tunnel was an abyss. Audrey was very grateful for the light Mortemer gave her.

The only good thing about this was that the tunnel wasn’t that long and soon the path began to vere up. As Audrey began to ascend she noticed something odd. There was a faint light above her. When she finally broke the surface, Audrey took out the mouthpiece and goggles. She found herself in a large cavern, and sure enough the ceiling was glowing, “Glow worms.” She murmured in awe and wondered how they even survived down here.

She swam over to the bank and crawled up the sandy surface to where she was a few feet from the water. Slowly, she began discarding the scuba gear and peeled off the wetsuit and the one piece. Audrey opened up her bag and started redressing herself. She attached her smaller tools and rope on her belt, then attached the holster for her pole to her thigh. Throwing her hood up and securing her scarf, Audrey grabbed the map and the light and started down the tunnel.

Alan had written that the tunnel would lead her to an underground city and from there it was up to her to find the stone. “Great instructions. Not even a clue to where this thing could be.” Audrey huffed in annoyance.
After a while Audrey’s path turned from soft earth and dirt to stone and wood. What was really surprising was the gate now blocking her path. Looking over she spotted a turnstile with the chain still attached, “Do I dare hope.” She retorted. Walking over to the turnstile, Audrey grabbed it and turned it counter-clockwise. At first it wouldn’t move. Audrey bared down and pushed more into the turn, slowly it began to turn easily and the gate lifted up.

The underground city revealed itself to her and Audrey suddenly felt overwhelmed, “Oh fuck me.” She growled. There were buildings, bridges, tunnels, and stairs all over the place! From what she could see, this city definitely went deep into the cavern and she was supposed to find one palm sized rock in this place.

“One special fucking rock.” She yelled condescending and a faint echo repeated that statement. Looking around once more, Audrey stepped forward into the city and glanced up, “Well at least there is a little more light,” She observed, acknowledging the thousands of glow worms on the ceiling. Even with the light from the worms it was still pretty dark in the colossal cavern. Audrey really didn't want to waste her light’s battery anymore.

Off near one of the buildings, Audrey spotted what looked like a wooden torch. Upon further inspection, it was indeed a torch and it still had a bit of oil on it. Grabbing two rocks, she put the torch between her knees and started striking the rocks together to create a spark. The spark caught on the cloth and a fire erupted. Dropping the rocks, Audrey held the torch in hand and raised it above her head.

It wasn’t much but at least the immediate area around her was illuminated. All the buildings around her looked perfectly preserved. Gently running her fingers along the stone structures, Audrey noticed that the rocks and wood beams were dry; no moisture. Audrey was baffled, she was at least hundreds, if not thousands, of feet below the ocean. Why hasn’t this place been buried yet?

Further ahead, Audrey noticed a large building. The rotunda stood out against the jagged stone buildings, its surface looked much smoother and almost clean. Audrey felt a pull to the rotunda, as if it were begging her to enter it. The feeling was so strong it almost made Audrey stumble.

Audrey had never doubted her instincts. They had gotten her through a lot of things over the years. The intuition to check somewhere and find rare jewels. The push she needed to ignore fear and leap across rooftops. The urge to duck and miss a bullet to the head.

But this pull was so strong it scared her.

The stone is there.” A voice whispered and Audrey jumped. Whirling around she waved the torch around, “Who’s there!” She cried. The voice had been so close to her, like someone was right behind her. The light from the torch didn’t reveal anything, just shadows and rocks.

Audrey glanced back at the rotunda. The pull was stronger now, almost demanding. Taking a shaky breath, Audrey made her way to the building. Climbing up stairs and crossing over bridges, she arrived at the entrance and pushed the doors open. Inside was a hallway with various doors and torches along the wall.

She followed the hallway, scanning over everything and glancing behind her every now and again. Like hell she was gonna let some ghost spook her again.
There was a dead end and a large door came up on her right but she didn’t see anything that would open the door. Pushing on it Audrey concluded that it was barred from the inside. That feeling was thrumming throughout her body now, she was so close, it was just past this door.

Looking around, Audrey discovered a large hole in the dead end wall a couple of feet above her. Taking out her pole, she pushed a button and it extended several feet in length. Stepping back, Audrey eyed the hole making sure she had enough room to clear it. Running forward, she stuck the front end into the ground and pushed herself into the air. Throwing out her legs first, Audrey flew cleanly through.

Pushing another button, the pole’s length retracted and Audrey landed safely. Putting the pole back in its holster, Audrey deduced that she was now on an upper level. A level that had a set of stairs on her right leading up.

She followed the stairs and noticed a faint aroma in the air, “Is that…flowers?” She wondered. Reaching the top of the stairs, Audrey was now on a balcony inside the rotunda’s dome. Leaning over the ledge, she gasped in surprise.

Below her, was a dense throng of flowers. Beautiful light blue flowers that were giving off a white hue and they smelled like a dewey spring morning. Audrey was absolutely bewitched by the radiant flora.

Grabbing the ledge, she vaulted over it and landed in the flower patch. Still crouched down, Audrey delicately felt a flower’s petals and felt delight in its soft and silky texture. “They’re poppies,” She realized. Audrey had never seen a blue poppy flower before.

Audrey felt so at ease here. The feeling that had once been demanding and scary, had dulled into a pleasant hum. Audrey stood up and slowly lowered her scarf. Taking a deep breath in, she let out a content sigh, “This is nice.” She said, thinking about all the dark houses and buildings she has gone through while on a job. The light and airy flowers were a lovely change.

Surveying the area, Audrey noticed that there was more light in this room than anywhere else. Expecting to see glow worms again, she looked up but didn’t see any.

Not a single one.

Growing concerned, Audrey looked around for a light source but all she could see was flowers. Staring down at the flora, she slowly began to realize that it was the flowers giving off the light. “Um, okay,” She murmured, “Glowing blue poppies. Nothing wrong here.” Another thought hit her and Audrey deflated a little.

“Glowing blue poppies. In the place that a weird voice told me the rock was. Which also happens to be blue…fuck me.”

Audrey sent a withered glare down to the flora, blaming them for her odd predicament. Out of the corner of her eye, there was a small rustle among the flowers. Audrey whipped around to see what caused the commotion but instead saw a small headstone.
The headstone was covered in flowers and a little moss. Kneeling down, Audrey’s hand moved to brush everything away when something else caught her attention. On top of the headstone, rested a rectangular blue stone. “Holy shit.” Audrey cursed in disbelief, “The Primal.”

She reached over and took the Primal in her hand. The stone was light and warm, which kind of surprised her. Much like the blue poppies, the stone gave off its own ethereal light, “Might just take you for myself.” Audrey chuckled, “We thieves love our pretty things.” She joked, even though it wasn’t a lie. She had so many glittering jewels and interesting trinkets back home. The stone would fit right in.

“Or should I leave you here.” Audrey found herself murmuring, “In your peaceful little bubble of flowers and stone. What do you think?”

Audrey felt a sudden shift in the air, the flowers began to rustle and shake against it. “Where did this wind come from?” She thought, bracing herself against it. The stone was beginning to grow hot in her hand and the wind picked up more. It was so strong, Audrey felt herself falling backwards into the flowers. Their soft texture, now hot and practically burning through her clothes. The stone seared her hand.

A sharp pain ripped through Audrey as everything grew hotter and brighter. She closed her eyes in agony and sobbed out into the vacuum. “Make it stop!” She screamed.

Fear not little one.

That voice.

We have decided.

Decided?

You will learn the truth.

You will be our gift.

What?

Learn, little one. Learn and guide.

And the world went dark.

Chapter Text

It had been a busy day for Madam Xiao Xiao and not the profitable kind. Guards continued to be lazy. One client refused to pay and another client had beaten poor Mary black and blue. The doctor said that she would have to be on bed rest for the rest of the week. “That makes three blossoms this week.” She tallied.

Xiao Xiao sighed, on top of that the Black Tax was just raised…again. Xiao Xiao was unsure if she could pay it this time. Pressing a latch on her bedroom wall, it opened before her and she descended into the dark corridor.

She had discovered this basement years ago when she first started the House of Blossoms. It was dark, quiet and safe. She could be alone down here. Think freely and relax.

When she reached the bottom, she froze in shock.

Lying on the floor, with a few flowers scattered about, was a body. Madame Xiao Xiao looked around for a second, confirming that there was no other entrance that happened to magically appear while she was gone.
“A thief that got lost perhaps?” She thought, walking closer, “Certainly dressed for it,” She muttered, “But how did they get down here?” Xiao Xiao wondered and tapped the body with her heel. It didn’t move.

Kneeling down, Xiao Xiao pulled back the hood and saw long light coppery hair, “A woman?” Reaching a hand over, she tipped the chin back and finally saw her face. The female was in her mid to late-twenties, full lips, long lashes, and a soft face. There were dried bloody streaks all on her face, perhaps from an injury but she couldn’t see any open wounds.

Xiao Xiao searched the woman, finding a lockpick, rope, an odd metal cylinder wrapped in a tough cloth, a small box with metal pieces, and something Madame Xiao Xiao couldn’t even begin to describe.

“You are definitely a thief my dear. An odd one, but one nonetheless” Xiao Xiao tsked. Standing up she put her hands on her hips, “A thief that I now have to carry up a flight of stairs.”

****************

The first thing to hit Audrey was the smell. It was thick and sweet, “Opium?” She drowsily thought. Was she in an opium den? No, she had been in a rotunda with flowers. Then…

“Learn and guide.”

The voice.

Audrey slowly opened her eyes. Everything was hazy, blinking a few times Audrey’s vision began to clear and she found herself in a luxurious room. Stone walls, oak furniture, low red lights, and glittering objects thrown about.

Even the bed she was laying in was beautiful. It was a canopy with dark oak bed posts and thick red curtains. The sheets that Audrey was resting on top of were so fluffy and silky. It was like laying on a cloud.

Audrey would have thought that she was dreaming, if it weren’t for the annoying pinch in her wrist. Looking to her right, Audrey saw that she was cuffed and chained to the upper right post.

Glancing around she also noted that she had been stripped of her hoodie, belt, scarf, tools and shoes. Leaving her in her dark blue long sleeve and dark pants. “Thank God for that.” She muttered.

Audrey heard voices outside and she quickly closed her eyes and regulated her breathing to give the appearance of sleep. The door to the room was thrown open and Audrey heard the last of the conversation.

“-and you will have your damn tax!”

The door slammed shut and someone sighed. Audrey heard a clicking noise come near her. A warm hand was placed on her forehead, she assumed the person was checking her temperature. The hand was removed, “At least you haven’t died on me.” Audrey was confused, “A man?” She thought.

She heard the clicking again, this time moving away. Once she was sure that the person was far enough, Audrey opened her eyes. Off to the side, was a tall person. They were facing her but were too focused to see that she was awake.

At first glance they looked like a female. High heels, a knee-high flowy dress, heavy make-up, and short shiny hair. However, if someone were to get close enough, they would see the structure of the person’s face.

Audrey watched as the person picked up something and held it closer to their face. Wincing, Audrey spoke up, “Careful.” She commanded. The person jumped and looked up to meet her eyes. “One wrong move and your head will be impaled.”

The person narrowed their eyes at her and slowly put her pole down. They crossed their arms over their chest and stalked towards her, “You are awake.”
Audrey stared at them. The person huffed, “What are you doing here?” Audrey raised a brow and remained silent.

“There is a general out there. A shout from me and he will drag you to the gallows faster than you can blink. So, why were you down there.”

“The gallows?” Audrey thought incredulously, “Where the hell am I?”

“I don’t know.”

The person stared at her, “You don’t know?” Audrey nodded. The person scoffed, “You don’t know what?”

“What I’m doing here.”

The person rolled their eyes in disbelief, “Fine. Don’t tell me why you’re here. But tell me this,” The person sat down on the bed next to her and leaned in, “How did you get down there?”

Audrey leaned in, “Down where?”

Growling, the person stood up, “The basement! How did you get down in the basement, no one knows about it. And as far as I am aware, there is no other entrance to it but the one I know of. So how did you get down there?”

Audrey shook her head, “Look, I know you don’t believe me but I honestly don’t know where I am or where you found me.”

“You're lying.”

Now Audrey scoffed, “Oh yes, I’m lying. I am chained to your bed, all of my items stripped, and thought ‘I’m gonna lie, that will help me’!”

Stomping back over the person grabbed Audrey’s face and stared into her eyes, “Tell me again.”

Audrey growled, “I don’t know where I am. I was in a cave and I blacked out. I don’t know where you found me.” Everything she said wasn’t a lie, she was just omitting some parts.

“Are you a thief?” The person demanded.

“I am,” She replied without hesitation. Audrey saw anger in the person’s eyes, “But,” She paused and with her free hand, grabbed the person’s wrist, “I have no intentions to steal from you.” She amended.

That seemed to do the trick. The person wasn’t angry anymore, but still doubtful. Backing away the person crossed their arms, “I believe you,“ They muttered, “I don’t want to, but I believe you.” Audrey nodded, “Cool. Can you let me go now?”

The person tilted their head at her, “Cool?”

Audrey sighed, “I need to figure out where I am.” She silently begged and just jiggled the chain hooked to her wrist. The person looked like they were debating it for a minute before sighing and pulling out a key from their pocket. “Yes, yes.”

Once the chain was off, Audrey hopped off the bed. Happy to stand and stretch her legs. “My things?” She asked and the person gestured to the top of a chest where all of her stuff was.

“You are a strange thief.” The person stated as Audrey began putting her stuff back on, “Some tools I recognize; some,” They gestured to Audrey’s multitool screwdriver, “I don’t. And your clothes.”

“What about them?”

The person shrugged, “I’ve never seen a thief wear such things.”

Audrey hummed, “Guess I’m just different.”

“Indeed.”

Audrey had just secured her scarf when there was an urgent knock, “Madame Xiao Xiao!” Cried a shrill voice. Audrey glanced at her host, “Madame Xiao Xiao?” The person ignored her and walked to the door.

Once they opened it, a young girl pushed through. Her blond hair was up in an elegant bun, she wore a long skirt with heels, a corset, and...her breasts were out.
“Okay, not just an opium den.” Audrey mused, debating on looking away or continuing to watch and see what the issue was.
“Madame! It’s Lord Michaels again, he took Delilah into a room and she started screaming.”

“Damn!” Madame Xiao Xiao cursed, grabbing a knife from a table, the Madame whirled on Audrey and pointed at her, “Stay here. I’ll be back.” Turning back around they stomped out and slammed the door shut.

Audrey heard their chattering begin to fade and once she couldn’t hear them she laughed, “Yeah, sure, I’m gonna stay right here.” She snarked. Audrey looked up and noticed rafters above her. They led all the way out of the Madame’s bedroom.

Climbing up the wall, Audrey hoisted herself up into the rafters and began swinging her way through them. She was definitely in a brothel. Candles littered the place creating a soft glow throughout the building, couches and carpets were set up to offer a comfortable place to rest, or provide a service, and the stench of opium was so strong Audrey could feel her eyes water. The rafters stopped at an opening for the attic and Audrey slipped in.

Crawling forward Audrey desperately searched for a hatch that would lead up to the roof, but she was going in blind. At one point the attic split, one continued on and the other dipped down to what Audrey assumed was the first level. Audrey started for the side that kept level, it was more probable that that path would lead her to the roof.

There was a sudden scream and loud sobbing.

Audrey stopped and turned back to the dip. She stared down the path, waiting for a moment. She could still hear the sobs. Audrey thought of the shrill blonde and what she said. A sense of dread filled her.

Audrey turned and went down the dip onto the first floor.

Audrey crawled as fast as she could, passing over rooms and vaulting over beams. Audrey soon found herself over an opening where the sobs were coming from. Lifting up the grate, she leaned forward and took in the situation.

There was a girl huddled in the corner, shaking and crying. She had cuts along her arms and legs, a bloody nose, and a dark bruise on her cheek. A man was pacing back and forth, muttering and swearing. He looked drunk. Audrey glanced at the door and saw that it had been barred with a chair. Audrey could hear the Madame outside of it, screaming at the man to let her in and to leave the girl alone.

The man stopped pacing and spoke to the girl, “This is all your fault!” He seethed, grabbing a candle stick and throwing it at her. The item hit the girl on her leg and she cried out. The man then stomped over to her and grabbed her hair and pointed a knife at her throat.

“Okay that’s enough.” Audrey growled and threw herself down. She silently landed on the bed and crept over. The man was just muttering nonsense now, pushing the knife against her throat, drawing blood. She was silently crying, afraid to move but thankfully she noticed Audrey.

Audrey waved at her to be silent. The girl nodded, “Bless her.” Audrey praised. Once close enough, she stood up and harshly jabbed two fingers in the center of the man’s neck.

The result was instantaneous. The man let out a gurgle and his whole body dropped. The girl, now released, quickly scrambled over to Audrey and clung to her desperately. Sobbing and crying. She cradled the girl in her arms, resting the girl’s head on her neck, trying to soothe her and get her to calm down.

Madame Xiao Xiao continued to bang on the door. “She’s okay!” Audrey called to them and the banging stopped, “Open the door.” Madame demanded. Audrey huffed, “Hang on.”

Audrey leaned down, “I need you to let go of me okay?” The girl tightened her hold and sobbed harder. Audrey hushed her and gently brushed her hair, “Just for a second sweetheart, I need to let your Madame in. They are worried about you.”

It took a minute but the girl finally relented and slowly let go. “Thank you sweetie,” Audrey murmured. Looking around, Audrey spotted a small quilt. She grabbed it and gently wrapped it around the girl, “Grab on to this okay?” Nodding the girl gripped the edges and held it closer to her.

Stepping back, Audrey took a second to look over the girl. She was pretty. Wide eyes, pink lips, perky breasts and a thin body. The perfect type to satisfy a man's lust. But she was young, so young. "Obviously in her late teens. How long has she been doing this?" Audrey wondered sadly. She was no stranger to these kinds of woman; those with no other way, forced to sell their bodies for food and a safe place to rest. Audrey couldn't help but think of some of the prostitutes back home. Sometimes she liked to stop and talk with them, listen to their stories and help them out if need. "Normally they didn't need help," She thought, "Tough girls who knew the streets and could throw a punch if necessary."

Perhaps they don't know how.

Audrey whipped her head around. That hadn't been her own thought and there was no one else here, so where? She shook her head, "One issue at a time Audrey." She mumbled.

Audrey ran over to the door and unbarred it. Quickly unlocking it, Audrey had only a second before the door was thrown open and she was slammed into a wall. “Delilah!” Someone yelled racing in.

Audrey rubbed the back of her head, relieving the pain. She was now stuck between a wall, a door, and a large wardrobe. Peeking out from behind the door, Audrey saw a few girls huddled around the girl, Delilah, cooing and holding her. Delilah was crying again but this time with a smile, knowing that she was safe.
Madame Xiao Xiao was over by the man, sneering down at him. “Rose, make sure everyone knows that Lord Michaels is banned. If he is found so much as looking at this house, I will personally hang him from the scaffold.”

“Yes Madame.” A girl with dark hair replied.

“What happened Delilah?” One girl asked. Delilah started telling her story, about how the lord had grabbed her, tried to fuck her before going into a drunk rage and pulled out a knife.

Audrey knew she couldn’t stick around anymore. Delilah would soon tell them about her and it was bad enough that one person knew. Looking up Audrey saw another grate opening above the wardrobe.

Climbing up, Audrey had just gotten the grate moved when she heard Delilah shout.

“Her!”

Audrey stopped and looked down. Sure enough, everyone was looking at her. Delilah had a smile on her face with a look of joy and admiration. While the other girls had a mixed look of shock and awe. Madame Xiao Xiao just looked annoyed. “Well shit.” Audrey thought.

Nothing much she could do now. Giving a nod to the women, Audrey crawled back into the attic and restarted her search.

When Audrey finally found a way out to the rooftop, dawn was breaking. Audrey could see warm golden light shining over various other rooftops. The air was cleaner, the smell of opium fading from Audrey’s nose. Stepping up onto a ledge Audrey soaked in what little rays she could, raising her arms above her head. She stretched out as long as she could before letting out a content moan and lowering her arms.

“You know.” A voice spoke up.

Audrey turned around to face the Madame. They were leaning against a wall with a smug look on their face, “You could have just taken the stairs.”

“Where’s the fun in that?” She replied, jumping down and crossing her arms. “How’s the girl?” Audrey asked. Madame Xiao Xiao sighed, “She’ll be alright. Shaken, but she’s a strong girl.”

Audrey stared at them for a moment before asking, “Madame Xiao Xiao, is this a recurring issue?” They gave Audrey a sideways glance before giving her a sigh, “Unfortunately.”

Audrey frowned, “Where is your security? Who watches out for people like that?”
Something like this would have never happened back home. If you fucked with someone’s girl then you were in trouble. You were either forced to pay or someone was showing up at your door to return the favor.

Madame shook their head and walked around her, “We have no one, the few guards we do have are a joke. It’s expensive to hire better ones.” Madame pinched the bridge of her nose, “We just lost one petal to some brute...poor thing.” Madame murmured. “And that stupid tax just went up. I’m growing desperate and the girls are growing scared. I just don’t know what to do.”

“A petal?” She asked. Madame Xiao Xiao groaned, “Yes a petal. The younger ones that aren’t allowed to- wait, how do you not know this. Where are you from?”

Audrey shrugged, “Not here.” Definitely not from here. Hell, from what Audrey was beginning to gather, she wasn’t even in the right era. She had seen the Clocktower off in the distance, no longer underwater.

She wasn’t stupid and Audrey knew damn well where she was.

“Well what are you doing here?”

“I don’t know.” She gritted out, “Like I said earlier. The cave and then I blacked out.” Not to mention that Audrey had now lost the Primal, “I don’t know how I’m gonna find it now,“ She thought, “Or how I’m getting home.”

“No need to be snippy, I’m just asking.” Madame raised their hands in surrender, “Need to know more about you if I’m going to help you.”

“Help me?” Audrey inquired, “Why would you want to help me? You don’t know me. You really shouldn’t even trust me.” Madame hummed, “True, but you saved my girl. She would have died if it weren’t for you and I can’t stand knowing that some poor confused woman is running around the city.”

Audrey gave them a pointed look, “I’m not delicate.”

Madame Xiao Xiao laughed, “Doesn’t matter what you are dear. This city will chew you up and spit you out if given the opportunity. So, I am offering a proposition.” Audrey raised a brow, “I’m listening.”

“You become the house’s personal thief and guardian until I can raise enough funds to get adequate security. For your service, I will provide you with food, shelter, maps, and all you need to know about this city.”

Audrey weighed her options. It wasn’t a bad deal, she needed a safe place to sleep while she explored her new world and the information Madame Xiao Xiao could provide would be helpful. However, she was a little worried about her presence here. One, she didn’t want anyone to accidentally see her or one of these ‘blossoms’ or ‘petals’ to let something slip. Two, she didn’t want the girls to rely on her completely, not if she was going to be coming and going as she pleased.

“Fine, but tomorrow you close the house.” Madame Xiao Xiao opened their mouth to argue but Audrey cut them off, “If you’re worried about money leave that to me. Your girls need to be taught self defense. They need to be assured that they are safe and if the situation calls for it they can defend themselves or someone can assist.”

Madame Xiao Xiao nodded, “Alright.”

“Do you have any masks?”

“What?”

“Masks. A person’s identity is their biggest weapon as well as their greatest weakness. The opium is so intense in there that the men probably can’t tell what’s up or down half the time. Use that. Make the girls start wearing masks, men aren’t gonna care who they end up with as long as they’re getting their rocks off. If anything, they'll be more enticed to come; the mystery adds to the allure. Do you understand what I’m getting at?”

The Madame slowly nodded, “You are very resourceful. I like it.”

“And one more thing, this scarf,” Audrey gestured, “Doesn’t come off anymore. I know you saw my face and that’s fine given the circumstances, but don’t ask me to take it off. I am a secret, the less people know about me the better.”

“Your identity is your greatest weapon.”

“Exactly.”

Madame Xiao Xiao huffed and shook their head, “Have I told you, that you are an odd thief?” Audrey smirked, “Like I said, it just means that I’m different.”

“Yes, you mentioned. However I think ‘different’ is too dull. You are more unique than any thief I’ve ever met.”

Audrey laughed at that.

“Can I ask you a question?” She asked and the Madame nodded, “What do you prefer?” Audrey asked, gesturing to Madame Xiao Xiao’s form. Madame Xiao Xiao narrowed their eyes.

“Pardon?”

“Which do you prefer? He pronouns, she pronouns, or they pronouns.” The Madame continued to stare at her, as if Audrey just completely flipped their world. A smile broke out of their face and they barked out a laugh, “Oh, I have a good feeling about you my dear. You are going to bring this city to its knees.”

“What?” Audrey asked, confused about the comment. Madame smiled, “No one has ever asked me that before. No one has had the balls to ever even question me about my preferences before.” Holding their hand out Madame continued, “She, if you please. The name is Madame Xiao Xiao, owner of The House of Blossoms. It will be a pleasure to work with you.”

Audrey took her hand, “Call me Drey. I look forward to working with you as well.”

Chapter Text

2 Months Later

Since that morning, life had become extremely different for Audrey.
True to her word, Madame Xiao Xiao shut The House of Blossoms down. All petals and blossoms gathered in the lounge area, consoling each other and bandaging any wounds that they had received. Madame explained that things were going to change, that everyone’s safety and security were important and that they were going to take steps to ensure that.

Madame introduced everyone to Audrey and swore them all to secrecy about her existence. Audrey would become their guardian until there were more reliable guards. After the girls had gotten some food and rest, Audrey spent a full six hours teaching the girls basic self defense moves. They were a little hesitant at first, but soon realized that this would benefit them and began learning in earnest.

She then taught everyone a duress system. They all picked a word and an arm motion to signal that they were in trouble and needed help. After that it was a simple explanation as to why they were going to wear masks from now on, to which no one complained.

It was a rough first couple of weeks. The girls were learning when to use or not use their new defenses and half of them wouldn’t use the duress signals when they were in actual trouble. Most nights Audrey found herself dumping some unconscious man, who had gotten too violent, into some random alley. Word had begone to spread that the house was haunted and it would attack men who tried to hurt the women.

The violent acts stopped after that and the girls grew more confident.

When the house wasn’t as busy, around two to three in the morning, Audrey was out exploring her new world. Studying every map Madame Xiao Xiao had given her, Audrey took to the rooftops and memorized every alley, path, and district in the city. From the Baron’s Manor to the Riverside.

When she had a good understanding of the City's layout, she went to Madame Xiao Xiao and asked about the City’s people.

Madame Xiao Xiao sat her down and they began a very long and detailed discussion about the City’s hierarchy. After that, Audrey spent the next month spying on the people. Remembering the guards’ routines, checking in on the petals, and finding all the local hotspots. Filling her pockets as she went, Audrey also made sure to stay vigilant while roaming the city at night.

She had been warned about thieves (ironic as that was), being a common sight in the city. Audrey made sure to stick to the darkest parts on the rooftop and it worked. She remembered one particular night when a thief passed her, completely unaware.

When Audrey woke up that evening, she immediately got dressed and geared up. Last night was a very good night. Audrey had finally gathered enough money to give The House of Blossom a good security detail for about four months. More than she originally promised, but she had developed a soft spot for the girls and Madame Xiao Xiao.

Heading down from her room in the attic, Audrey swiftly made her way to Madame Xiao Xiao’s room. Once inside, Audrey saw the Madame touching up her makeup, “Good morning.” She smiled, noticing the thief’s presence.

“Good Evening.” Audrey replied walking over. Madame Xiao Xiao turned to her and Audrey motioned for her hands. She then placed five leather pouches in her waiting palms. Madame gasped, “Drey! This is-”

“Enough money for guards for four months. Now you can focus on that outrageous Black Tax.” Audrey told her, pulling her scarf down a little and giving her a smile. Madame Xiao Xiao gave her a kind smile and nodded, “Thank you dear. Now I have something for you.”

Getting up, she walked over to her desk and picked up an envelope, “You once asked for someone who believed in the impossible my dear,” Walking back over she handed Audrey the envelope, “Luckily, she has asked for you.”
Opening up the envelope, Audrey pulled out the letter and read it over.

“Signed, The Beggar Queen.” Audrey murmured, “I thought you said no one ever gets to see her.”

Madame Xiao Xiao nodded, “Everyone except her loyal beggars...and that Master Thief.” She muttered the last part. Audrey gave her a questioning glance but let it slide. Audrey felt excitement bubble in her, this woman could possibly give her the answers she needed. A time and place was written on the bottom of the paper. Audrey realized that she needed to leave soon if she was going to make it.

“Thank you Madame, you don’t know how much this means to me.”

She smiled and patted Audrey’s head, “It wasn’t me dear, that woman has a way of knowing things. Now, go on or you’ll be-”

“Xiao Xiao!” Screamed a man. A shiver ran through Madame Xiao Xiao and Audrey felt herself grow angry.

Out of everyone Audrey had learned about while in the city, there was one man who pissed her off to no end.

Thief Taker General Thadeus.

The man made Audrey’s skin crawl. The man was borderline, if not already, psychotic with an ego the size of the Atlantic Ocean and a whole army at his control. She had an unfortunate encounter with the General several weeks ago that almost ended with an arrow through her thigh. If he saw her in the House of Blossoms, there would be no one to stop him from raining Hell down on them all.

“Under the bed!” Madame hissed and Audrey quickly followed her orders. Just in time too, the door was thrown open and a man barged in, “Done with your make-up yet?” The man taunted and Madame Xiao Xiao scoffed, “What do you want?”

“We have business to discuss. Let's go.” The General walked back out. The Madame started to follow but stopped when Audrey managed to get a hand around her ankle. She squeezed it, asking a silent question.

Madame Xiao Xiao smiled at the worried gesture. She quickly leaned down and patted her hand. Audrey let her ankle go and watched as Madame Xiao Xiao left the room, closing the door behind her.

Audrey felt anger and fear for Madame Xiao Xiao, but she knew that the woman could handle herself.

Making her way through the house, Audrey would stop over grates and peer into the rooms to make sure everything was okay. Audrey peered through one particular grate and saw Delilah with a sleeping older gentleman.

Delilah looked up, bored out of her mind and saw Audrey. She smiled and waved. Audrey smiled back and pointed at the man. Delilah rolled her eyes and mouthed, “One blowjob and done.” Audrey had to stifle a laugh and mouthed back, “You poor thing.” Delilah shrugged.

Audrey blew her a kiss and continued on.

Once outside Audrey glanced around to make sure the coast was clear. Happy with her findings, she leapt off the House’s roof and ran across the rooftops. The night was clear and the full moon was high.

Audrey had a good feeling about tonight.

She was finally gonna get some answers.

Chapter Text

The meeting location was at an old run down church in the Mourningside district. Audrey had been here a few times but always got the feeling of unwelcomeness so she never stayed too long.

That feeling wasn’t here tonight, instead Audrey felt warmth and acceptance.

She stuck to the shadows, watching the beggars of the city wander around the place. Audrey found a large staircase leading underground.
Once she reached the bottom, she noticed a greater number of beggars in the chamber. Audrey hesitated, “I thought this was going to be private.” She thought and crept along the stone wall.

A woman’s voice suddenly called out, calm and smooth, “Gentleman, do you mind leaving for the moment? I need to be alone.” There were a few murmurs but no arguments. The chamber soon cleared out, leaving Audrey and the woman alone.

“So,” The woman drawled. She was a few feet ahead of Audrey, sitting in a chair surrounded by candles, “You are the one I’ve been hearing so much about.”
Audrey stayed in the shadows, unsure of the woman, “Very few know about me and they won’t talk.”

The woman smiled, “I know all my dear.” She paused and then raised her hand in Audrey’s direction and beckoned her closer. “Come. Come out of the shadows my young friend. Let me see you.”

Audrey stepped out and walked closer to the woman. The woman turned and Audrey was shocked to see the woman’s eyes so cloudy. “She’s blind.” Audrey thought and the woman chuckled, “Yes, I am. Though, I don’t need them to truly see things.”

Audrey stared at her in shock. “Can you-”

“Read minds? No my dear. I’m just used to that reaction from new faces.”

Audrey considered this and nodded in understanding. “So you are the Queen of Beggars?” Audrey asked and the woman hummed, “Yes. I am glad you received my letter.”

“How did you know to send it to the House of Blossoms?”

The woman chuckled, “I know all.” She repeated.

“Do you know how I got here?” Audrey demanded. She saw the woman still.

“Yes. You were taken from your time and brought here by the Primal.”

Audrey smiled, “Finally!” Her mind exclaimed. “You know about the Primal?” Audrey asked and the woman nodded, “Oh yes. It is safe.”

“Safe? No, look I need it to get back. It brought me here, it can take me back.” Audrey said hopefully. The woman huffed, “It’s safe.” She stressed, “And I am sorry young one, but it will not deliver you back to your time.” The Queen said in such a tone that left little argument.

“But...it brought me from my time to this place. Why did it bring me here?” The woman sighed, “That remains unclear child, even to me. I am sorry."

Audrey felt the breath leave her body and she slumped to the ground. She couldn’t go home, she was stuck here.
Audrey couldn’t help but think of Beckett, Zozo, and her home. Not too mention all the trinkets and treasures lying in her saferoom. "Everything I have ever work for just...gone." She grimaced. Not start over like it was nothing, was kind of daunting. Audrey heard the woman coo at her and gently stroked her head, “Worry not Audrey.”

Audrey snapped her head up and stared at the woman, the Queen of Beggars cupped her face and smiled, “Yes I know your name and that you are a child of the shadows.” Audrey had heard that term before from Madame Xiao Xiao, once in reverence and another in anger.

“While I am sorry I cannot help you, I am grateful that you are here. There is something about you Audrey,” The woman stared into Audrey’s eyes, “You were meant to come here, I can feel it. You will bring change to this city, but I am unable to fully understand what it is.”

"Change? The most change I bring is a decrease in someone's bank account. How can my presence change an entire city." Audrey dismissed but couldn't keep the unease for her voice. The woman sighed, "The future eludes even me little one. There are too many paths, too many results. Nothing is ever set in stone until it has come to pass."

The Queen gently let go of her face and leaned back in her chair. Audrey felt herself slump down as she continued to stare at the woman. She took a few breaths before speaking, “Do you think I will ever get home?”

She paused, "No.” The woman replied. She turned to her side, where two tea cups sat and held one out to Audrey. “How did those get there?” Audrey wondered and gingerly took it.

“So I’m really stuck here?” Audrey asked and took a sip of the tea. The warm, sweet liquid gave Audrey a small moment of peace. The Queen nodded solemnly, “Yes.”

Audrey exasperatedly rubbed a hand over her face and the woman chuckled, “This does not need to be a terrible thing dear. I can sense your curiosity and your glee when you soar across the rooftop without worry or care. This world has opportunities you have yet to discover. You just have to find them”

Finishing her tea, Audrey stood up and began pacing, “What are you suggesting? That I accept my fate? Start making a name for myself here?”

The woman raised a brow at her, “I believe you have already done that, Ghost of Blossoms.” Audrey paused and sheepishly rubbed the back of her neck, “Ah, so that’s what clients are calling me.” She chuckled. Audrey suspected the girls had something to do with that.

“I believe,” The woman began, “You need to go back out to the streets young one. Not as a novice traveler or a debtor, but as a proper thief. Coming and going as you please, challenging yourself as you see fit."

She stretched out her hand and Audrey saw a small card between her fingers. Walking forward, Audrey took the paper and read the name and address. “Who is this?”

“A fence. He will treat you right and can promise discretion. Find him whenever you are ready.”

Audrey pocketed the paper. “Thank you ma’am.” As Audrey made her way out, something grabbed her wrist. It was the Queen but Audrey hadn’t heard her get up, “How did she-,”

“You are always welcome here Audrey; I will listen.”

Audrey’s mouth twitched into a small smile and she nodded. The Queen of Beggars let her go and Audrey slipped out of the chamber. Once outside, Audrey climbed up onto the nearest roof and pulled out the piece of paper once more.

Basso
The Crippled Burrick

“The Stonemarket District.” Audrey muttered. The place sounded familiar, if Audrey remembered correctly that was where the Clocktower was.

Audrey hesitated, looking over in the direction of the Clocktower, debating her options. Letting out a sigh, she turns and heads back to the House of Blossom. All the while pondering her choices.

She wanted to, Audrey desperately wanted to get back to good ol’ fashion thieving. The thrill of sneaking past poorly thought defenses, holding a glittering treasure in her hands and vanishing into the night proud of her accomplishment.

But was it too soon? She was still new to this world and the Blossoms still relied on her for protection.

Well, until the new guards show up.

Conflicted, Audrey stops and lets out an angry huff. Realizing that she was becoming tense, Audrey shook herself loose and stretched out her arms. Twisting her body sideways, Audrey caught a window suddenly open.

Audrey ducked behind a chimney and watched as a figure in black gracefully jumped out of the window onto a wooden walkway and gently closed it behind them.

The figure then ran up onto the rooftop across from her. They paused and crouched down. Pulling out something from their pocket, the figure held an item up to the moonlight and Audrey let out a quiet gasp.

In their hands was a large glittering garnet necklace. Audrey stood mesmerized at the paler red stone. She felt her fingers begin to twitch and she wondered, just for a moment, how easy it would be to steal that necklace right now. While the thief was settling into complacency, believing that their job was done and they were home free.

The thief tucked the necklace back in their pocket and Audrey watched, regretfully, as the figure slipped away. Taking that beautiful jewel with them.

Audrey stared at the spot, thinking and pondering. With a small smile, she continued back to the House of Blossoms with a skip in her step. “Tomorrow,” She thought determinedly, “I’ll visit the fence tomorrow.”

“So you’ll be gone the whole night?” Delilah asked. Audrey nodded, strapping the pole and holster to her thigh. “Yeah, that’s the plan. If he doesn’t have a job for me then I’ll probably just run around for a little while.”

Delilah pouted and Jasmine, who was perched on Audrey’s bed, laughed, “Don’t pout dear, our ghost is a thief. Thieves don’t sit and stay.” Audrey smirked at the statement.

Walking over to Delilah, Audrey nudged her chin up with her finger, “She’s right sweetie. I can’t stay in the attic.”

“Will you leave the House?” Delilah asked and Jasmine perked a little at the question. Audrey sighed, “Maybe. It’s gonna depend on the job and whether or not the fence is good.”

“Who is it?” Jasmine asked. Audrey gave her a look and Jasmine rolled her eyes, “I swear I won’t tell. Delilah?”

Delilah shook her head and ran her fingers over her lips.

Content with their response, Audrey replied, “A man named Basso.”
Jasmine gasped, “Basso the Boxman?” Audrey shrugged.

Jasmine looked shocked for a moment before shaking her head, “I keep forgetting that you are still new to this place. It’s rumored that he’s the Master Thief’s fence” Audrey raised a brow, “Master Thief?

“And you know that because?”

“He used to come here. Molly said he was a talker.”

“And a screamer.” Delilah giggled, “Oh Lord.” Audrey sighed, “I’m literally about to go meet the man, don’t put these thoughts in my head.” Both girls laughed, but Audrey couldn’t help but think about what Jasmine said.

Master Thief. Madame mentioned them before, I wonder what they did to be given the title.

“Come on, both of ya.” Audrey shooed the girls and they made their way down from the attic. Once they were on the floor, the door to the room opened up and Madame Xiao Xiao walked in, “There you two are. Jasmine, Lord Carter requested you for the evening. He’ll be in room seven.”

She sighed, “Great more complaining about how under-appreciated he is.” Jasmine gave Audrey a kiss on the cheek and walked out of the room. Madame Xiao Xiao turned to Delilah, “Delilah, I need you to watch the opium tank tonight with Charlotte. It's been acting up.”

Delilah nodded. She turned to Audrey and gave her an affectionate hug, “Take care out there.” She whispered, Audrey chuckled and returned the embrace, “Be careful around that tank.” The girl nodded and released her. Running off to go do her task. Madame Xiao Xiao shook her head, “That child acts like you are her mother.”

Audrey shrugged, “I don’t mind. She’s a sweet girl.”

“That’s how you get attached dear.”

Audrey scoffed, “Oh, I think we are well past that.”

Madame Xiao Xiao chuckled, “True. Will you be departing soon?”

Audrey nodded, “Yeah, I’m hoping for a good night.” The Madame nodded, “I’m sure it will be fine. Are you going to be on the lookout for a new home as well?” Audrey sighed.

“That’s twice now someone has asked me that. I’m not sure yet, it will depend on tonight. Why, trying to get rid of me?” Audrey teased and Madame Xiao Xiao snorted, “Hardly, you were a godsend. No Drey, I mean that you should find your own place, you are an independent woman with a committed profession. You need a place to feel comfortable in, somewhere where you can take the mask off and relax.”

Audrey nodded in understanding, it was a little annoying to wear the scarf all the time.

“And besides,” The Madame had a sparkle in her eyes, “You can’t bring potential suitors up into the attic of a brothel. Very tacky.”

Audrey gasped at the drag and smacked her arm. “Well you aren’t getting any younger Drey.” She winked and walked out of the room, leaving the annoyed thief.

Audrey made her way out of the house and onto the city rooftops. By the time she made it to the Crippled Burrick, dusk had fallen and the City’s lamps were lit. The Night Watch guards were on their first rounds.

She quietly slipped down into the alley below and entered the Burrick. Inside was a short burly man standing in front of a desk. His back was to her so he hadn’t seen her yet. He was more distracted by a bird, cursing at it.

Audrey kept to the farthest side of the room. Slowly creeping up, Audrey could kind of see the man's face and frowned.

Beckett.

Squinting at the man before her, she conceded that they were nearly identical but she knew it couldn’t be Beck. “Maybe a great-great ancestor.” Audrey guessed; still the resemblance was uncanny. The only major difference being their beards, Beckett had a full beard while the man in front of her had more of a healthy stubble. For a second, she wondered how Beck was doing and if he was looking for her but she quickly shook those thoughts. Audrey noticed the man tense and slowly reached for a metal cup. She smirked, “Feisty.

In a flash the man whipped around, branding the cup like a weapon. While he had been turning, Audrey darted forward, now standing on the other side of the desk, “Personally,” She drawled and the man whipped back around in shock, “I would have gone for the candelabra. More length.”

The man stared at her, befuddled. “Damn and I thought he was bad.” The man sighed, setting the cup down. “You must be Drey? Ol’ Queenie said that you’d come by today.”
Audrey squinted at the man, she had never told the Beggar Queen her thief name, but she ignored it and nodded, “Yeah. She told me to come to you for jobs. Apparently you’re the best fence in town.”

The man chuckled, “I try and just saying, you’re not what I expected.” Audrey rolled her eyes, “Not expecting a woman?” He shook his head.

“No. Your clothing is different from what I’m used to but I'm not complaining.”

Sticking his hand out, the man introduced himself, “Names Basso, pleasure to meet ya. Did you just get here?” Taking his hand Audrey shrugged, “You can say that.”

Basso dropped the hand shake, “Queenie said you were gonna be here awhile. Plannin’ on settling down?”

“For the foreseeable future.”

Basso hummed, turning and walking over to another table with maps and papers scattered about. “Do you consider yourself a team player or prefer to be alone?” He asked. “Alone please.” She answered.

The bird chirped at her and Audrey smiled, “Pretty magpie,” She cooed at the bird and gently ran her fingers along its back. It chittered happily and cuddled up to her hand. Basso came back and huffed, “She never does that with me! What did you do?”

Audrey shrugged and continued to pet the magpie, “Just told her that she was pretty.”
Basso narrowed his eyes at the bird and muttered something along the lines of ‘traitor’. Audrey chuckled at the exchange and with one last pet, turned her attention to Basso.

“Well,” He began and set some papers down, “I would give you the shovel talk and tell you all kinds of threats if you betray this office and my trust. However, Queenie vouched for you and Jenivere here,” Motioning to the bird who snaps her beak at him, “Absolutely adores you. So, I’ll just skip that bit.”

“Why?” Audrey asked.

Basso shrugged, “You met Queenie. That woman sees all and hears all, if she knew you were a bad apple she’d have sent you away the minute you arrived. And Jenivere, can sense the diamonds among the rocks. You know what I mean?”

Audrey nodded.

“Good. Now onto the good stuff.” Basso smirked, rolling out a map of the South Quarter. “A client of mine is interested in collecting a series of bracelets. He unfortunately lost one, the Sunflower. It fell into the sewers and when the client went to get it back, someone had already taken it.”

“Let me guess. You want me to steal it back?”

Basso nodded and pointed to a house near the Postman’s Office. “My sources tell me that the fellow who lives here has it now. Unfortunately that’s all I have, so it will be up to you once you get inside.”

“That’s fine. Thanks for the information.”

Basso rolled up his map and tipped his head. Audrey was making her way out when Basso spoke up, “And next time, could you use the door please? It’s bad enough I got one doing it, I don’t need two.”

Audrey chuckled, “Where’s the fun in that?”

Leaving the Burrick, Audrey ran all the way to the South Quarter. She slowed down when she got near her destination. It was a two story building with about four windows.

She glanced around, “Just got to make sure that-” Audrey suddenly remembered where she was and laughed, “There are no cameras. There’s barely enough electric lamps posted to keep a square lit.” Shaking off the habit, she began climbing up to the second story windows. Audrey inspected the seal. Grabbing her multitool, she grabbed the handle and attached a long cylinder flathead.

Jamming the flathead in the middle of the window seal, she shimmed the tool along the crease until she heard the latch click unlock, she put the tool back and tried to lift the window, but the old wood was giving her some trouble, “Might have to look into getting a crowbar. Make things a little easier.” She concluded, finally getting the window to open.

Slipping in, she gently closed it back and took in her surroundings. She was in a small bathroom, walking over to the door she kneeled down and peeked through the keyhole. On the other side, Audrey saw a man asleep on a bed in complete darkness.

Slowly opening the door, she tiptoed in. Audrey noticed several empty glass bottles around the bed and there was a distinct smell in the air. “Alcohol.” She thought, stepping over the bottles. Not wanting to take any chances, Audrey quietly continued to look around the room, searching for any possible hideaways.

Audrey checked behind a few pictures but didn’t see any ‘secret’ safes. She made her way away from the bed to what she assumed was a door to the staircase, when she noticed something strange.

She had almost missed it but on the floor was a small rise. Laying flat on the ground, she examined the anomaly. “A boobytrap.” She realized the trap was laid out all the way to the door. “They expected someone to come up the stairs and step on the trap immediately. So that would mean,” She glanced back over to the bed, “The bracelet has to be in here.

Staying flat on the floor, she spun herself around and examined the floor under the bed. She saw a small indent in the floor, “There.” The space was a little tight, but Audrey managed. She pulled herself forward until she was right on top of the lock.

The man let out a loud snore and moved around. Audrey stilled.

After a minute or two the man quieted down and Audrey soon heard soft snores. Focusing back to her task, Audrey pulled the tool back out and switched the flathead out with a single wire attachment. Audrey made quick work of the lock and opened the hidden safe box. Inside were a few coins, a letter opener, a pair of earrings, a note, and a beautiful sunflower bracelet.

Gotcha.” Audrey smirked and quickly looted everything. Closing the box and putting the lock back in place. Audrey shimmed out from under the bed and quietly went back into the bathroom.

She reopened the window and vaulted out of the house. Climbing up to the roof, she found some cover and pulled out the note. On it was an angry recount about some tax collector wrongfully taking the guy’s money and the combination to the collector’s safe. “Was even nice enough to give me the address.” Audrey smirked. Since she didn’t really want to chance the boobytrap, she hadn’t been able to find any other valuables in the house. This felt like a good compensation.

By the time Audrey returned to the Crippled Burrick, pockets full and mood elated, it was around four in the morning. Approaching the doorway, Audrey remembered Basso’s request and decided to be nice.

“Basso?” She called out. She heard something thump before Basso replied, “Come on in!”

Basso was sitting at his desk, feeding Jenivere, smiling. “You actually used the front door and you gave me a warning!” He said happily. Audrey shrugged, “You asked and I’m in a good mood.”

He laughed and shook his head in disbelief, “I’d hate to see you pissed then. The job go well?”

Smiling at the thought of the tax collector’s, now stolen, riches, Audrey walked forward. “You can say that.” She murmured and gently placed the jewelry in front of him, “One sunflower bracelet, as ordered.” Basso nodded, “That’s the one. I’m impressed, this tiny thing has been giving me a headache.”

“Really?” Audrey asked surprised, “Was pretty easy in my opinion.” Basso grinned at her, “Oh?” She paused at that. That grin came with a dark glint in Basso’s eyes. She had seen it many times before with Beckett.

Someone is gonna get it.” Audrey mused.

Basso pocketed the brooch, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give you your cut. Nice job tonight.”

Basso watched the woman leave. “Did ya hear that Jenivere?” He asked the bird and she cawed. Basso felt himself cackle. “She said it was easy.” The woman, Drey, was a pleasant surprise.

When the Queen of Beggars wrote to him, she had said that Drey would be a great investment. Basso had been a little skeptical of that, but no one argues with ol’ Queenie.

The bracelet had been a problem for weeks and Basso had been running low on options. The task was so difficult it gave the great Master Thief a run for his money.

“Basso.”

The fence jumped and sighed, “Speak of the devil.
“Garrett.” Turning, he saw a figure hidden away in the corner of the room where most of the candle light didn’t reach. “One of these days you’re gonna give me a heart attack from doing that.”

Garrett stepped forward, “We wouldn’t want that would we?”
Basso could practically hear the smirk in his voice. Basso sighed, “I thought you weren’t coming by?” Garrett grunted and shrugged, “I want another go at the bracelet.”

A wicked smile graced Basso’s face and he chuckled, this was going to be fun. “No need, it’s done.” He announced and pulled it from his pocket, letting it shine in the candle light.

Garrett paused and stared at Basso. “What?” He walked over to the fence and stared at the bracelet. Garrett was conflicted, this bracelet had been giving him trouble all week and yet here it was, glittering innocently in Basso’s fingers.

“How?”

Basso shrugged and put the sunflower back in his pocket, “Oh you know. Client was getting impatient, so I had to send someone else.” Garrett raised a brow at him, “Someone else?”

Basso nodded, “Yep, and you know what they said?”

Garrett didn’t like Basso’s tone.

Basso smirked, “They said that the job was easy.”

Basso watched with absolute glee as the Master Thief stiffened up and his eye literally twitched in annoyance. Basso knew that Garrett prided himself on his thieving skills, so the fact that he had difficulty with this job and someone else came along and upstaged him, was pretty fucking hilarious for Basso.

However, Basso could see that particular glint in Garrett’s eye and he couldn’t help but feel a tad bit sorry for Drey.

Garrett slammed his hands down on Basso’s table, startling him and Jenivere. Garrett stared at Basso with intense determination and a burning curiosity, “And just who are they?”

Chapter Text

A Few Months Later

Audrey was elated.

She grinned happily under her scarf and jumped and twirled over the City’s rooftops. Tonight’s haul had been especially bountiful. Basso had just asked her to steal a necklace from some Lord’s wife. It was just sheer coincidence that the couple also kept several other family jewels and heirlooms in their house as well. She was particularly happy with the blue topaz music box with butterfly designs she found. It matched with the ruby and emerald boxes she had at her house. Audrey found out that they were part of a collection and she was just missing the amber and a yellow sapphire boxes.

That’s something Audrey noticed in this City. It was easy to start a collection. If it was unique, then it was definitely part of a set. She had already started up four different collections.

Making her way into the Burrick, Audrey knocked twice and walked in, “Basso,” She called and a curse answered her, “Hang on, trying to find something.” Audrey hummed and gently pet Jenivere, “Something important?” She asked. Basso grunted, appearing from the shelves, “No, a hassle more than anything. But I’ll get to that later. You got the necklace?”

Nodding, Audrey retrieved the item from her pouch and handed it to Basso, “One necklace as requested.” Basso inspected it before smiling, “Perfect, thanks Drey. Gonna head home for the night?”
She nodded, “Yeah. Need to check some things and then I’ll head home. Got anything for me tomorrow?”

“Only if you’re interested, there is a job in Baron's Way North. Some rich suitor is not happy that his intended lady rejected him and kept the gifts. He wants one particular item back.”

“Sounds fun; I’ll take it.”

“Good, come by tomorrow and I’ll-” Audrey cut him off and listened intently. Someone was coming. She pushes Basso away from his desk and hid under it. Motioning for him to keep quiet, she waited. Sure enough someone entered the Burrick, “Expecting me Basso?”
Basso shrugged, “Either I’m getting better or you’re losing your touch. Are you done?”

There was a thump on the desk and Basso whistled, “A solid gold bust of the Baron himself. Nice grab Garrett.” Audrey stilled, “The Master Thief.” She thought and took care not to move an inch.
Since her time here, Audrey has heard alot about the man, from his mysterious demeanor to his astounding achievements. The man was a legend in this city and a tempting bounty to boot.

Audrey had been lucky so far to keep away from the man. He was an enigma she didn’t need to get wrapped up in, but he seemed hellbent on finding her. Basso had admitted that he told him about her doing the bracelet job and that he had become her official fence but that was it, nothing personal. This didn’t seem to deter the Master Thief.

There had been a few close calls.

“Who were you talking to?” Garrett asked and Basso stilled. “Shit.” Audrey thought, had he really been that close? “Jenivere of course. Who else?”

“Birds can talk?” Garrett stated in disbelief. Basso shrugged, “I've been teach her somethings. Are you done for the night or are you gonna do another?” Basso asked, changing the subject. Garrett was quiet for the moment before answering, “The night is still young, got anything?”

“I might have something, hang on.” Basso left to go search his shelves and Audrey felt herself panic, what’s to stop the Master Thief from looking around and finding her? She waited with bated breath; praying.
Thankfully the man never moved to her side but he did start rummaging with things on Basso’s desk. He paused at something and Audrey heard him let out an interested hum, “I’ll take this one Basso. I’ll be back later.”

“Wait, what-” From the sound of it Basso was too late and the man was gone.

Basso held out his hand and helped Audrey from under the desk. “Damn it, which one did he take?” Basso muttered, quickly scouring his desk. There was a piece of paper off to the side, “This one,” Audrey said and passed the paper to him.
Basso glanced over it and tsked, “Shit. Drey, this is a job to steal something from the House.”

Audrey grabbed the paper, eyes darting over the contract. Sure enough, a man wanted a bedazzled bangle from one of the girls. Audrey growled, “Sonofabitch.” Crumpling up the paper she glanced at Basso, “Don’t worry if you don’t see him again tonight.” Basso nodded, “Don’t hurt him too bad,” He smirked, “Garrett doesn’t believe in ghosts.”

“I’ll give him a reason to.” She muttered and stomped out of the Burrick.

Racing as quickly as she could, Audrey made it to the House of Blossoms just in time to see the Master Thief crawl into the attic, “Not in my house asshole.” She glared and ran in after him. Audrey kept herself at a distance, not wanting to alert the man of her presence just yet.
She followed, until he finally stopped. Audrey saw the man kneeling over a grate, staring down intently. Audrey crept up slowly behind him, pulling out her staff.

Garrett had just put his hands on the grate when Audrey’s foot stepped on a loose board. The sound rang out between them and Audrey wanted to curse at her own carelessness. In a second, Garrett ripped the grate up and threw it at her.
The metal hit her side and sent her stumbling. While Audrey reeled from the impact, the thief jumped on top of her and held her down.

“The Ghost of Blossoms and Basso’s new charge.” He grunted while Audrey thrashed around, “Been looking for you. Who are you?” He growled. She stopped moving and glared up at him, not answering.
He leaned in, “I was surprised. I’ve heard nothing but praises about your skill but that was a pretty novice mistake you made.” Audrey narrowed her eyes at his tone. She growled and continued to thrash until she could feel her knee get wedged between them.

She pushed him away with her knee and rolled back. The two stared at each other while crouching. Garrett lunged, throwing his legs out first, in an attempt to sweep her. Audrey jumped up and walked backwards to get space but the man was fast. Using the momentum from his lunge, Garrett shot up and forced Audrey up against one of the beams. Audrey immediately threw a punch but he grabbed her fist and slammed it above her head.
Audrey grunted at the force and began to panic when Garrett grabbed her other wrist and pinned that one as well. Using all his weight to keep the other thief pinned, Garrett took a moment to look the other over. Something was different but he couldn’t really place why with all the thrashing the person was doing.

Garrett forced a knee in between the thief’s legs in order to try and limit their squirming when it clicked.

Garrett stared at her, “A woman.” He murmured, his eyes raking over her body. His distraction gave her an opportunity and she stilled, “Pretty novice mistake yourself.”
Audrey smashed her knee on the man’s dick as hard as she could. Garrett grunted in pain and keeled over. While he was down, Audrey leapt for her staff and swung it at the man. The Master Thief didn’t stand a chance, the staff hit his head with a resounding smack and he collapsed.
Audrey stood, huffing in the empty space. “Damn it,” She muttered angrily. There was a noise behind her, Audrey whipped around to see a head come through the hole.
One of the blossoms, Bly, lifted herself up and gasped.

Audrey hushed her and knelt down beside her, Bly kept her eyes on Garrett, “I heard some noises and saw the grate gone. I was curious.” Audrey nodded, “Everything is fine now, you can go back down.”

“Is that him?” She asked, “The Master Thief?”

Audrey sighed, “Yes. If the Madame asks, tell her I took care of it. But if she doesn't, let's just keep this between us.” Bly nodded and climbed down. Audrey put the grate back over the hole and then proceeded to tie up the man.

When Audrey finally made it to her destination, daylight was just breaking. Tired and agitated, she threw the thief’s body on the ground and glared at the Queen of Beggars. “I’m so glad that you think this is hilarious.” She hissed. The old woman sat chackling on her throne, “Oh little one,” She whipped a tear from her eye, “This is the most entertaining scene I have witnessed in a very long time. Where have you two come from.”

Audrey scowled, “I thought you knew everything.”

The Queen chuckled, “Humor me.” She replied and took a sip of her tea. Audrey rolled her eyes and walked over to her, “Dumbass over there, decided that he was going to steal from the girls tonight.” The Queen offered her a cup, which Audrey graciously accepted, and continued, “Apparently he doesn’t believe in ghosts. So I followed, made a mistake, we fought, he patronized me, and I knocked him out. Humored?”

She smiled, “You fight dirty.”

“He deserved it.” Audrey affirmed and drank her tea. The Queen chuckled, “I’m sure he did. I will watch over him until he wakes.”

Audrey nodded and set the cup down, “When he does wake up, tell him that The House is protected and not to test me again.” As Audrey was leaving, the woman called her.

“One day you will have to face him. Who knows, you may even like him.” Audrey scoffed, “And you think so because?”

As she continued up the stairs, Audrey could hear the smugness in her tone. “I know all, young one.”

***************

Consciousness was a cruel mistress, Garrett decided. The first thing that registered in his mind was the throbbing pain in his head. He groaned, slowly pushing himself up.
Rubbing his head, Garrett winced when his hand grazed over a decent sized bump. “What happened?” He wondered.
Garrett remembered going to the House of Blossoms. He got inside and found his quarry, and then…

“The woman!” He gasped and hissed at the immediate pain.

“Ah, good to see you awake Garrett.” He slowly looked over, careful not to encourage more pain, and saw The Queen of Beggars mixing a drink in her hand. She handed it to him, “I was worried for a moment, that bump felt really bad.” He narrowed his eyes at her and took the cup, “You know who did this?”

She nodded and Garrett set his cup down, “Who is she?” The Queen gave him a smile, “Why do you care?” Garrett frowned and turned away from her.
Why did he care, that’s what he had been asking himself lately. It had been about pride at first. Some new thief shows up and steals a job out from under him, so he had to find out who this person was. It didn’t take long to figure out that the Ghost of Blossoms was the thief and Garrett thought he would meet them, sooner or later.

How wrong he had been.

The thief, the woman, was nearly impossible to find and was always one step ahead of him. Garrett didn’t know whether to be annoyed or in awe of them. “She left you a message,” He perked at that, “She said that the House is protected and it would be unwise to test her again.” Garrett scowled; annoyance it was. “Test her? I was simply going to ask her some questions.” He grumbled and stood up.

"Oh, I'm sure and I am sure she will appreciate the new bruise."

Garrett didn't say anything but he couldn't help the sheepish flush crawl up his face. That had been completely unintentional. Garrett hadn't counted on her arriving so quickly and actually startling him.

The old woman sighed, “You had your suspicions last night, why did you go?” She asked, Garrett patted himself down and shrugged, “I took a chance and it worked.”
The Queen stared at him and he sighed, “Basso is an awful liar. I saw a job involving the House and I knew she would come. I want answers.”

“Your plan worked a little too well, however you didn't get much.” She pointed out and Garrett glared at her. She walked over to her chair and sat down, tapping a finger on her chin. Garrett crossed his arms and waited.

“If you want answers, you’ll have to extend the olive branch.”

“She hit me.”

“Perhaps a partnership.”

“She. Hit. Me.”

“Then I ask again, why do you care?” Garrett scoffed, turning away from her. He didn’t have time for this. Garrett was about to leave when the Queen waved him over. He grumbled and moved to her side. She stared up at him, “You feel something don’t you?” He glanced down and the woman hummed, “You do and it scares you.” Garrett refused to look up.

The Queen of Beggars sighed, “She is afraid too and much like you, she hides it very well.” She told him, “She is trying to understand our strange city and is very hesitant on who to trust. Earn that trust Garrett. You will not regret it.”

Garrett stared at the Queen of Beggars, a little overwhelmed about what she said but he was even more curious now, “How do I find her?” He whispered, the woman smiled at him, “Peak her interest. She will come.”

Chapter Text

There was still sunlight when Audrey woke up. She tried to roll over and go back to sleep but last night’s events kept replaying in her mind. Sleep hadn’t come easy; too annoyed with herself and him to go to sleep. Not to mention the effects from getting hit with a metal grate were making an appearance.
Yes, she had made a pretty dumb mistake. You always check where you step, especially when you are getting close to someone.
But that man, pointing out her mistake in such a condescending tone. As if he had a right to judge her. “At least I stopped him from stealing anything,” She sighed

A sudden weight broke her from her thoughts, she hissed at the contact on her bruise and looked up to see her kitten slowly crawl up her body. The black and orange tabby let out a happy chirp and bumped up against her cheek. “Feeding time huh?” Audrey asked and the kitten shot off the bed. She chuckled and got out of bed as well.

After the fifth job with Basso, Audrey had finally decided to go and look for a place of her own. She didn’t want to be too far from the House of Blossoms in case Madame or the girls needed help but she also wanted to be near the Stonemarket so that she could pop in on Basso and the Beggar Queen whenever she wanted without wasting half the night getting there.

She found a place right on Glimmer Lane in the South Quarter. Audrey had stumbled across it while running from the guards one night. It was an abandoned three story building. It was evident that the first floor was once a shop but all the windows and doors were boarded up. The second and third floors were the living quarters. The second floor had a fireplace, a table, and a stove. The third floor had a window that overlooked the street, an armchair and a bathtub.

With the help of Basso, Madame Xiao Xiao and the Queen, Audrey was able to get all the necessities and some extra luxuries for her home. Walking over to her firepit, a DIY project she was especially proud of, she put a few logs on and lit it. The nights were beginning to grow colder, so Audrey started to warm up her room the minute she woke up.

Walking down to the second floor, Audrey filled up a pot of water and let it boil on the stove. Reaching down to get a can of mushed fish, she smiled when the kitten eagerly brushed up against her.

“You know Toby, you’re gonna have to learn how to hunt at some point,” Audrey scolded fondly, “Mushy fish can’t be all that great.” The kitten let out a short trill and chowed down.
Audrey went back over to the stove to find the water boiling. Taking it off she made a cup of coffee and went back up to her room. She was surprised to see Jenivere tapping at her window.
She opened it and Jenivere hopped closer, “You’re awfully early,” Audrey cooed, stroking her back. Jenivere dropped a matchbox on the ledge and stared at her expectantly. Audrey chuckled and reached inside a cup next to the window for a cracker. Feeding it to the bird, she read over Basso’s message.

Have a new job. It’s a bit of a challenge.

“A challenge?” Audrey muttered curiously. Glancing up at the skyline, she noticed that the sun was starting to go down. “I’ll be there soon.” She told the magpie and, as if satisfied by the answer, Jenivere flew off. Audrey was about to close the window when something caught her eye. Without hesitating she slammed the window shut and closed the curtains.
It could have been nothing, a bird or a cat along the rooftop. But a part of her thought differently. For a moment, it looked like someone taking cover at the nearby chimney.

Audrey really hoped it was a cat.

Finishing her coffee and began getting dressed. Audrey had decided to retire her typical look, since everyone she had come across kept mentioning how strange it was and how it made her stand out more. Audrey found some light and flexible dark leather and had a trusted, and well paid, tailor craft her new pants and a long sleeved shirt. She kept her holster but fashioned a new belt to hold any bags or tools and bought some cloth to cover the bottom of her face. Once everything was on she completed the look with a dark shawl, with a hood attached, that draped down to her waist and had arm holes. Making it easier for her to blend in the shadows.

Audrey saw the guards begin to light the street lamps as the last of the daylight diminished. Checking around her house, making sure all of the boards were in place and everything was locked up. She gave Toby one last scratch and headed out.

When she made it to the Burrick, Basso was focused on something and muttering to himself. Audrey knocked to get his attention but that didn’t do anything. She walked closer to see what he was looking at, “Nice map.”
Basso jumped at her voice and stared at her in shock, “Drey, you scared me!” Audrey raised a brow, “I knocked but you were deep in thought. Is everything alright?”

Basso scratched his head and gave her a sheepish look, “Yeah, everything’s fine. This new job, it’s a bit tricky.” Audrey nodded, “You did say that it was a challenge.”

“I did?”

She narrowed her eyes at him, “Yes, you did. It was on the note you sent Jenivere to give me earlier.” Basso looked at Jenivere before giving Audrey a smile, “Yeah, I did. That’s right, sorry Drey. Things have been a little crazy today, I haven’t stopped since breakfast.” It was a reasonable excuse, Basso was a well sought boxman, but there was a gut-feeling that kept her from believing him. She crossed her arms, “Is this job gonna get me into trouble Basso?”

He chuckled, “No, thank the Trickster for that, but you are gonna have to do something you don’t like.”

“Oh?”

“You’re gonna have a partner.” Audrey huffed and shook her head, “I don’t do-”

“Partners, yeah I know. Trust me you’ll need one now. It’s all the way in Auldale, pretty big place and heavily guarded.” Basso interrupted, suddenly looking very tired, “Please Drey, for me. An ‘I owe you’ kind of thing if ya like,” He asked.

She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, “Who exactly am I working with?” Basso fidgeted, “Don’t know, said that they’d meet you and explain everything before you both go in.”

“Is it him?” Audrey asked.

Basso, knowing full well who she was talking about, shrinks in on himself and doesn’t say anything. “Basso-”

“The job is good, I swear, and the house is filled with lots of goodies. And I know you two had a rocky start-”

“He hit me with a grate.”

“You hit him in the family jewels and punched his ticket to dreamland.”

Audrey opened her eyes and stared at the fence for a long time, “Who told you-,” Cutting her off, he sighed, “Look Drey, I’m beggin’ ya here. He really isn’t a bad guy, a pain in the ass sometimes yes, but he knows what he’s doing. Just go and do it please.” He whined and Audrey rolled her eyes.

“Fine. It better be worth it.” Basso gave her an honest smile and nodded, “Oh it is and best be quick about it. Jenivere has been twitching all day. Means a storm’s coming.” Audrey nodded and left.

While on the way there, Audrey kept trying to dispel any doubts she had. It wasn’t good to do a job unfocused. It caused distractions and distractions led to mistakes. “As the Master Thief showed me last night.” She thought but quickly banished the reminder. She really didn’t need to think about that right now. She just needed to focus on the job and getting it done before the storm rolled in.
Speaking of which, as she neared the house, heavy storm clouds had completely covered the moon and gave her a lot more cover to scope out the place.

It was the home of one of the Baron’s councilmen, a highly favored one by the looks of it. She saw six posted guards and four more conducting sweeps of the area. No doubt there would be more inside. From what Audrey could tell, the most vulnerable entrance was the rooftop garden.

Audrey suddenly had a feeling of someone approaching. “And there is my partner.” She mused. They crept forward and stopped by her side. Audrey didn’t look, instead she kept her focus on the garden to see if any guards would check it.

“I see you found an entrance.”

Slowly, she glanced to her right and saw a familiar hood. She let out a sigh, “Good Evening Master Thief.”

Chapter Text

“You can’t take a hint can you?” Audrey asked while continuing to stare at the garden roof.
Garrett shrugged and leaned up against the ledge, “About the House? Yes. However, you never said anything about jobs.” She huffed and shook her head. Garrett continued to stare, “You’re not surprised.”

“Basso’s a shit liar.”

Garrett shook his head, “Not when it counts.”

“So you roped him in on your little scheme to get me here.”

Garrett shook his head. “You would not have come if you thought I sent it.”

“I had a feeling it was you to begin with and I almost didn’t.”

“And yet here you are.”

Audrey hummed in agreement. Turning back to the house, she continued to watch the garden. Garrett walked over to the woman and stood beside her, “Any movement?”

“One guard comes out every few minutes and I’ve seen about two more pass by these four windows,” She told him, gesturing to the second floor windows. He nodded, “Anything else?”

“Yeah, what’s the job?”

Garrett glanced at Audrey and squared his shoulders, “There is a crown, hidden, in Councilman Bernard’s chambers. The crown has over a hundred small diamonds and a large sapphire in the center.” Audrey whistled, “Sounds expensive. From the mainland I’m assuming?” Garrett nodded.

“The family?” Garrett shook his head, “Adults are at a dinner party and the kids were put to bed hours ago.” Audrey nodded, “What’s the challenge?” He pulled out a sheet of paper with a sketch of a key on it, “It’s locked in a box that can only be opened with four keys that look like this.”
Audrey took the paper to study. It was a pretty basic design. It had a diamond shaped head with a hole in it. “So find who has the keys, steal the keys, open the box, and steal the crown. Does that sum it up?”

“Getting out would be nice.”

Audrey rolled her eyes, “Smartass.” She muttered and Garrett smirked. Standing up, she lazily walked over to the edge, “So am I leading or you?” The thief shrugged, “Ladies first.”

Audrey gave him a drool look, “You just want to observe me.”

“And if I do?”

“That depends. Is it observation for judgment or curiosity?” Garrett shrugged, not wanting to give up anything. This was purely curiosity, he wanted to see how this woman worked and where her morals lie. And why she interested him so much.

But she didn’t need to know that.

Audrey shook her head at his antics, “Fine, keep your secrets but I will warn you. Try anything funny and I will leave you behind.” Garrett smirked at her threat, “And what makes you think you could get rid of me so easily.”

“Hm, I don’t know. How’s your head?” She sassed and could almost see how quickly the thief’s smirk turned into a scowl. Flashing the man a wink, she jumped down onto another roof and made her way to the rooftop garden.

Arriving, with Garrett close behind, Audrey stilled and slowly crept forward. The patrolling soldier was back out.

With one of the keys on his belt.

The soldier whistled while leisurely walking alongside the flowers. She stilled by a potted bush and waited, “The door stays open. We’ll follow in after him and go right.” She whispered.

Garrett nodded in acknowledgement.

Right on que, the guard walks through the open door and veers left. Before he could get too far, Audrey darted forward, carefully grabbing the key. Waving the item at Garrett, she smirked, “One.” She mouthed.

The two thieves continued into the house and crawled along the shadows. One would stop the other every now and again to communicate about rotating patrols. Once they passed, the two moved on.

Audrey could help but notice how natural this felt. How communication flowed seamlessly between the two. How there was mastered patience between them. Every step was easy and calculated. There was no rush, no cocky confidence. The Master Thief wasn’t like anyone else she has worked with. Which was rare.

She also noticed, annoyingly, how he was always a few steps behind. Watching her.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.” She muttered softly, feeling his eyes bore into her head.

Audrey heard the man pause behind her, “Do what?”

Damn he heard that?

“Nothing, an expression from back home.”

“...and where is home?”

“Far, far away.” Audrey droned, hopefully ending the conversation. The man seemed to take the hint, but didn’t let up on the staring.

Rolling her eyes Audrey continued on. They were coming up on one hallway when she heard a couple approaching.

“I told you Thomas, no!”

“Come on Helen, just a quick roll in front of the fire. Who is going to find out?”

“Oh, just the rest of your comrades.”

“Nonsense, they won’t hear a thing…as long as you stay quiet.”

“Thomas!”

Audrey grabbed Garrett’s arm and quickly ducked into an empty room, just as a guard and a maid turned the corner. Garrett pulled his arm away and quietly closed the door. While the man stood guard, Audrey could help but examine the room. It was some kind of study. A gaudy framed painting caught her eye and she smirked.

The frisky couple, unaware of their presence, passed by. Garrett let out a sigh, that had been too close. He heard a soft gasp behind him and turned to see his partner standing by an opened painting safe.

He was shocked that he hadn’t heard her or the safe opening. “She’s good.

A gold necklace clutched in one hand and a worn leather book in her other hand.

He stared at her, in interest, as she seemed more fascinated in the book than the necklace. From what he knew, the woman stole jewels and precious metals like any other thief. He wouldn’t be surprised if she had a collection or two. But looking at her now, there was definitely an academic interest.

That’s…refreshing.” He admitted, thinking of his own plaque collection.

She caught him staring and shot him a look, “What?”

Garrett shrugged, “I will gladly take the necklace if you are only interested in the book.” He offered while walking over. Audrey chuckled, pocketing the items and gliding to the other side of the desk, away from the approaching thief.
“No, I'm pretty partial to both. You were just too busy staring at the maid’s ass to see me appreciate it.” She replied.
Feeling a heat rise to his cheeks, Garrett glared at her. He could see the teasing twinkle in her eyes and for a moment his heart sputtered. Garrett scoffed but smirked under his scarf. Watching the woman as she made her way back to the door to peek out, he closed the safe. A warm feeling bubbled up in his chest, “Refreshing indeed.

A small glare on the desk caught his eye. Whipping away some papers, to his surprise, he found one of the keys. Along with a letter of instructions.

Rapping his knuckles on the desk, Audrey looked to see what he wanted. “Two.” He replied and walked over to her, “I thought you said that the guards would have them?” She asked and he handed the paper to her.

“They do, this one was the Captain's. He had to leave and left it for the Councilman, with instructions on who else has them. And look,” He pointed at the list, “The last two are guarding his chambers.”

Audrey hummed, “Convient.”

Garrett nodded, “Indeed. Which we need to take advantage of.” Glancing out the window, he noticed that the wind had marginally picked up. While rain was not a terrible thing, a storm was a problem.

With how some of these rooftops are, one wrong step or grab and you were gone.

“It’s clear,” Audrey observed the hallway, “Ready?”

Nodding, Garrett followed after the woman.

As they neared the chambers, both perked up at the sound of nearing thunder. “We’ll have to hurry this up.” Garrett muttered and Audrey nodded in agreement. They rounded the last corner and stopped at the sight of the chamber doors. As well as its guards with the keys.

They stayed rooted to the corner, watching. Audrey could tell that the two were bored but weren’t moving from the door and there was not much space to sneak behind, grab the keys, and get in.

There has to be another way.” She wondered and a lightbulb went off. “Watch for others.” She whispered. Garrett glanced at the woman to watch her pull something out of the pouch on her waist and…extending it?

“What is that?”

“Watch.” Audrey replied, loading the darts. “This little beauty better work, it was a pain in the ass to figure out.” She thought begrudgingly and blew into the tube. As intended, the two darts shot forward and landed on the stationed guards. The guards staggered forward before slumping to the ground in a deep sleep.

Audrey felt a well of pride surge through her and the master thief whistled low, “Sleep darts?”

“Of course. I would never hurt or kill without a damn good reason.” Audrey mumbled, almost daring the man to say something against it. Quite a few of her old associates had an issue with that; why keep someone alive when they could talk?

But to her surprise, Garrett nodded in agreement. “Impressive and commendable.” He complimented.

Audrey felt a slight heat in her cheek but shook it away, “We need to hurry.” She commanded and double checked the hallway. Once it was safe the two bolted to the guards and grabbed the keys.

Quickly opening the door, the thieves slipped inside and locked the door.
Audrey glanced around in the darkness. A sudden flash of light from outside illuminated the room to reveal a luxurious master suite. A giant bed, thick curtains, gilded portraits, and several expensive knicknacks litter the room.

“Well,” She murmured, gently tracing a bejeweled egg, “Lots of diamonds. But not the ones we came for.” She observed and pocketed the egg.

Garrett smirked in bemusement and nodded, “Start looking around, we don’t have much time.” As if solidifying his statement another flash of light and crash echoed.
Audrey nodded and began her search.
Looking high and low for any sign of a keyhole or a hint at the location of the crown but to no avail.

She did however find a diary on one of the desks. Judging by the objects on it, it was probably the wife’s. “Might have something.” She hoped and flipped through. One entry caught her eye:

The carpenters have returned, this is the third day in a row! They spend all day working and lock me out of my own room! I had to wear the same dress to Ana’s afternoon tea and the Merryclots’s dinner party; absolutely mortifying. Freddy says that the bed needed more support and other things but I have noticed no difference.
Not to mention, he has now broken another promise. Freddy swore that for our anniversary he would let me completely redecorate the bedroom; I had grown tired of how the furniture was and wanted to move everything. I had the plans, paints and fabrics all picked out and now he has all but forbade me from it. I don’t understand. But I won’t give up, perhaps I can ease a few changes on him…curtains first?

Audrey looked at the bed curiously, “What did they do to the bed and why make such a fuss?” The ordained headboard rested against the wall but something was off. Walking over, she gently ran her fingers on the smooth wood. The headboard wasn’t resting against the wall, it was part of the wall. She was about to get Garrett, when her fingers snagged on something. Audrey discovered a square cutout in the middle of the headboard. “Find something?” Garrett asked.

“Possibly. You?”

“Maybe, look at this.”

Garrett handed the woman a letter, detailing services rendered for work done, as well as some strange instructions involving the keys. An idea sparked and Audrey motioned to the bed.

“It’s a safe.”

“What?”

"The bed is a safe. Look here is the door,” She grabbed his hand and ran it over the wood. Garrett hummed, glancing at the note. Taking Audrey’s hand, he brought her over to one of the bedposts. Squatting down, Garrett put her hand on a small hole, “And here are the keyholes.”

“That’s…brilliant, actually.” She whispered in awe and Garrett nodded, “They are on all of the posts but we have to turn them in a specific order. I’ll take the two on the left, you take the right.”

Audrey got in place and awaited her cues. The two unlocked the bedposts in order and snapped their attention to the click of a panel opening. The cutout that Audrey had found was now open.
Garrett stood up and cautiously approached. Lightning struck and Garrett was able to make out a distinct twinkle in the compartment. A quick search revealed no traps and he grabbed their prize.

The elegantly bedazzled crown laid heavy in his palm. The diamonds glittering beautifully on what light it could reflect. He heard a soft sigh from his partner. Audrey stared at the piece in awe, it really was a gorgeous accessory.

Garrett watched her for a second, a flash of light glinted on the sapphire and the man witnessed as the light revealed glittering blue eyes that nearly rivaled the sapphire itself.

Gorgeous.” His mind whispered.

Garrett pocketed the item, “We need to go Drey.” He commented, hearing the first notes of rain against the roof. Audrey nodded and walked over to a pair of bay windows, “We can leave through here. The balcony goes over the property wall. We can either drop down into the alleyway or take the roofs.”

Garrett opened the doors and tested the rain, “We should be fine on the roofs for now. Once it picks up we’ll head down to the street and make our way to Basso’s.”

Nodding, Audrey took a running leap over the rail and onto the adjacent rooftops. “Well we better get going then. I’d hate for the rain to ruin your makeup.” She teased and took off.
Garrett scoffed but couldn’t stop the rising feeling of fondness bubble in him. Ignoring it for now, he shook himself loose and vaulted after her.

She was quick but he knew these rooftops better than her and in no time at all they were side by side, “Try not to fall behind.” He murmured before jogging left, away from her. She rolled her eyes but followed after him.
Audrey noticed the wind and rain begin to pick up, “Maybe need to slow down before I-” A sudden slick patch interrupted her train of thought and Audrey threw out her hands to catch herself on one of the pipes.

She managed to grab it but her force was too much and her lower half slid out from under her flying off the roof. She held on tightly as her body hit the ground and her legs dangled off the ledge.

Garrett heard a small curse behind him and turned back to find the predicament Drey was in. Huffing he doubled back, “I told you to not fall behind. Not fall off.” Audrey glared up at him, “My mistake.” Heaving herself up, Audrey glanced down to see a patrol sheltered under an entryway.

The rain was gushing down at this point and it was beginning to become hard to see, “We need to find a way down. The roofs are too slick.” Audrey said loud enough for Garrett to hear and not alert the guards.

Glancing around, Garrett waved her forward to a ladder.

The two descended and Audrey took cover behind a crate. The alley they were in led to a small square with a few guards loitering under any covered spaces. They were mostly talking with one another, ignorant to the rest of the world. An idea began to form, “Hear me out.”

Garrett settled behind her, looking out as well, “Why do I feel like I’m not going to like this?”

“Do you want to go back to the roof?”

“...your plan?”
“After the lightning strikes, we sprint straight across the alley over there,” She pointed to the opening on the opposite end, “That will lead to the Burrick. It's dark enough and the rain will drown out our steps. The guards will never know.”

Garrett was silent, analyzing her plan and any other options. There really were none. It was too dangerous on the rooftops and anything they could have ducked in and out of was occupied by soldiers. He nodded, “On you.” He murmured.

The two waited, their breaths calm and steady, preparing for the mad dash. As the world was cast in a bright light, the two moved in unison and sprinted across the now dark space. Keeping as low as they could without breaking their speed, they cleared the square in record time with no alarms.

Audrey was elated at the success of her plan but the happiness was quickly shattered. Neither had seen another figure dashing through the alley into the square; running smack into them.

Audrey got the brunt of it, getting sandwiched between two people. Garrett was quick to jump back and Audrey fell backwards onto the cold and wet pavement. As lightning illuminated the area once more, both thieves stared in shock.

The Thief Taker General was staring right back.

As the light faded, the man and woman could only stare with mild panic, as the man’s face went from bewilderment to unbridled rage. One word echoed furiously throughout the square.

THIEVES!

Chapter Text

“So let me get this straight.” Basso drawled, “You two took your sweet time during the job and ended up running round in the storm. Then ran right into the General which began a long chase around the city. And ended up back here bruised up and shaking like a cod outta water.”

He states and faced his two guests. Audrey at least looked a little sheepish, “Bless her.” He thought fondly and handed her a dry rag. He turned to Garrett and rolled his eyes at his uninterested demeanor.

“Gods give me strength with this man.” Basso was going to give another rag to his friend when a quick flick of his eyes made Basso pause. It could have been nothing but just to be sure, “Do I have that right?”

He walked over to one of his cabinets that still gave him a view of the two thieves. He kept an eye on Garrett.

“Well…yeah. A simple way of putting it. But yeah.” Drey answered and flinched when she put the rag on a large bruise on her shoulder. There. Basso saw it this time. Clear as day.

Garrett’s attention had flicked to Drey and it looked concerned. The Master Thief watched the woman intently, his eyes roaming over the rest of her body, and only relented when Drey finally relaxed. Basso could see the shift in his eyes into what could only be described as caring. Basso hadn’t seen that look from his friend in a long time.

“We finished the job didn’t we? What was a little jaunt around the city going to do.” Garrett deflected and got up from his perch. Garrett had moved farther from them but somehow was still closer to Drey than he was to Basso.

“Well, what do ya know.” He smirked almost giddily, “He likes her.”

Watching his friend walk around, Basso couldn’t help but see how Garrett was favoring his right shoulder. Neither could Audrey.

“Do you have any bandages or a long piece of cloth Basso?”

“I should. Why?”

“He’s gonna need it.” Audrey motioned towards Garrett. He raised a brow at the woman as she made her way to his now defensive friend, “What is that supposed to mean?” Garrett hissed while trying to shield himself.

“Oh calm down, I meant for your arm. I’m gonna touch your shoulder okay? I need to check something.”

Garrett side-eyed the woman but allowed her to do as she pleased

Audrey gingerly pressed her hands against Garrett’s shoulder and collar bone. She would see him flinch every so often and would ease up. Audrey tsked, “I thought so. You’ve dislocated your shoulder.”
Both men gave her bewildered looks. Rolling her eyes, Audrey braced one hand on Garrett’s shoulder and another on his arm, “Basso get the cloth and a small board or two books. He’s not gonna want to move this for a little bit.”

Basso nodded and rushed off, leaving a slowly worried thief behind. Garrett tried to walk away but Audrey held firm.

“Let go woman. It will be fine.”

Audrey rolled her eyes, “Oh yeah sure. We'll just leave it alone and it will be ‘fine’. Until morning…and the next few weeks…possibly the rest of your life.” She teased, rubbing over the spot and causing Garrett to wince.

“You need to relax or else it’s going to hurt more.” She muttered. She gently kneaded the muscles. Garrett huffed, “I can’t with you touching me like that.”

“Well I have to make sure I’m at the right place. Just quit whining and relax.”

“Do you even know what you’re doing?”

“I’ve had my fair share of injuries, Master Thief. Got pretty good at patching myself up.” She mutters. The statement piqued Garrett’s interest. It’s possible that she’s been doing this for a while and doing it alone. Not uncommon in their line of work, but even he had Basso in his corner.

“Not big on people?” He fished.

“...used to be.” She admitted, “You’ve got a nice city here Master Thief. Good people if you know where to look.”

Garrett tipped his head in acknowledgement. He could understand, the City was a good place. He had a good home, there were plenty of bounties, and he appreciated Basso and the Queen of Beggar’s presence; though he’ll never admit that.

But this woman sounded like she had more now than a new home and even Basso’s friendship, “Just want have you been doing since you got here.” He wondered. A question for later but as of now, he needs to address something.

“Garrett.”

“What?”

“My name is Garrett. Though you’ve probably already heard.”

Audrey paused and stared at the man in front of her. They hadn’t actually introduced themselves before had they? Her signature nickname should have answered him quickly. Audrey had done it a million times before, it was her title. Her identity.

So why was she hesitating?

“Be honest! Be truthful! Tell him your name!”

A voice. Giddy and excited. The primal.

Audrey glanced around, but a part of her already knew where the voice had come from. “Been awhile. Wanna tell me why I’m here?” Silence.

She sighed. Getting back to the task at hand she noticed that Garrett had relaxed and she braced. “Nice to meet you Garrett,” Leaning in, she whispered, “I’m Audrey.”

Pop!

The reaction was instant, Garrett jumped away from the woman cursing up a storm. As he paced and sputtered profanities, Basso walked back in with a grimace. “I heard that from the back. Didn’t sound good.” Glancing at his friend, he chuckled, “Doesn’t look good either. Is he gonna be alright?”

“He’ll be fine, you got the stuff?”

Handing the thief the materials, Audrey approached the man and tugged him out of his stupor, “Last thing and then I’m done. Promise.” She couldn’t see it but from his eyes Audrey knew the man was scowling at her but made no move to deny her.

Garrett watched as Audrey wrapped his arm and shoulder with ease. Her fingers are light and delicate but firm and precise. Ensuring that the books held his shoulder in place while giving him some range of motion. The pain was still noticeable.

“So Doctor Drey, what’s the verdict?” Basso inquired amusingly. Neither noticed the incredulous look Garrett shot Audrey. He didn’t have time to comment on the sudden name difference as another stab of pain engulfed his arm.

“He’ll live but he’s gonna have to take it easy for quite a while.” She replied sagely.

“How long?” Garrett growled. The sound sent a delightful shiver up Audrey’s spine, “About two months, if you want it to properly heal.”

Garrett hissed something before going back to pacing, only this time cradling his arm. Audrey shook her head at the display before turning to Basso, “I’m too tired for his shenanigans. I’ll swing by tomorrow for payment?”

“Come on, we both know that it's just an excuse to see my handsome face.” Basso winked.

“Please, we both know Jenivere is the only one for you.” She teased and stroked said bird before making her way out. Pausing at the doorway, Audrey glanced back at the preoccupied man.

“Goodbye Garrett, be seeing you.” Glancing up at his name, he watched as Audrey bolted out into the darkness. He raced out after her but was too late. “No doubt back to her home.” He bemoaned his missed opportunity. He had so many questions.

“Be seeing you.” Her voice fluttered through his mind. He massaged his shoulder as a small smile crept up on his face, “Be waiting, Audrey.”

Chapter 15: Update: Rework

Chapter Text

Hello all.

Sorry there is no update. I really let this story get away from me and looking back at some of it I'm not really happy with it. So I am reworking the story. There will be some familiar pieces but mostly some major changes. Hopefully I'll start posting again soon.

Thank you!
