Chapter 1: tony fucking stark

Chapter Text

Ever since flying that nuke into space, Tony Stark had been driven insane with paranoia. He couldn’t sleep, and on the rare occasion he did, he’d be brutally woken up by nightmares. So, he just opted not to sleep. It was a win-win situation, really. He had no nightmares, and he could build things to prepare for what was coming. It was a perfect solution.

Except it wasn’t. He was going crazy, he knew it. He couldn’t think of anything other than the upcoming attack, couldn’t work on anything other than protection measures. Tony was going off the deep end.

The witch hadn’t helped his case. After the vision she gave him, that vision that seemed so real, Tony was even worse off than before. He needed a solution, he needed to find a way to protect his planet. He had to build Ultron.

He was running off pure caffeine and willpower, not having slept since being given the vision. The power inside Loki’s scepter was fucking with his mind, and so was the witch, and Tony just couldn’t take it anymore. He had to create Ultron, as fast as he possibly could.

All his fault… it would’ve entirely been his fault. If he couldn’t figure it out, what the hell was he good for?

When Ultron turned out to be a homicidal maniac of an AI, Tony would love to say he was surprised. Truth is, he wasn’t. He wasn’t expecting it, sure, but of course everything he’d ever made would go wrong.

Ultron had killed Jarvis. Jarvis, his AI… his child. He was gone. Tony vowed then and there not to let Ultron win.

Of course, everyone on the team blamed him. It was easier that way. Just blame Tony, because then you don’t have to blame anyone else. No one even cared that Bruce had helped too, because obviously, Tony must’ve used his evil powers of coercion on him.

No one even cared that Tony had done this to protect them all.

The final straw, probably, was that they let the witch on the team. After what she did, they still let her on, no questions asked. She didn’t even have to take responsibility, or accountability, or anything. She was just some misunderstood child in their eyes, despite being a grown adult well aware of what she was doing.

She’d allied herself with Ultron; she was willing to destroy the world with him. It was only when she found out she and her brother were included in that destruction that she switched sides. All she had to do was switch sides in the heat of a battle, and that made her an Avenger. More of an Avenger than Tony had ever been.

She blamed him for the death of her parents, which was stupid. For starters, that weapon was sold by Stane, illegally, and Tony had no part in any of it. He’d killed Stane when he found out, for Christ’s sake. Besides, would you blame the owner of Mercedes if a Mercedes killed your parents? No, no you wouldn’t. She was just looking for someone to blame, and it conveniently happened to be Tony.

She then blamed him for the death of her brother, which Tony also didn’t have much to do with. If she hadn’t planted that vision in his head, her brother would be alive and well, so it’s on her, really.

He took all the responsibility, shouldered everything, and still, his “team” called him selfish. They said he only cared about himself, that he was petty and childish. He was anything but that. Even Romanoff, who was supposed to be S.H.I.E.L.D.’s best profiler, had gotten him all wrong. It’d be a bit funny if it weren’t so sad.

Tony was fully willing to accept the blame of Ultron; it had been partially his fault. It just wasn’t entirely his fault. And no one was willing to see that.

It was easier to let Tony be their scapegoat, but Tony was done with that. There was no way in hell he’d let some entitled pricks define who he was.

He was Tony Fucking Stark, and it was about time he showed them what that meant.

Chapter Text

Tony didn’t know when he’d let himself become a doormat for the Avengers, or why he had. He used to be the Merchant of Death, someone who wouldn’t take anyone’s shit, someone who meant something. After meeting the Avengers, he became a pushover, but that wouldn’t stand any longer. He wouldn’t let them use him anymore.

“As of today, I’m withdrawing all my fundings to S.H.I.E.L.D, effective immediately. I won’t be building weapons for the Avengers Initiative program any longer, and I won’t be paying damage control for missions I wasn’t directly involved in. That gonna be a problem?”

“No shit it’s gonna be a problem, Stark! You can’t just take away all our weapons!”

Barton’s face looked like it was about to explode. Tony stifled a laugh.

“As a matter of fact, you’ll find that legally, I can.”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Pepper smirk triumphantly. He knew she’d always hated the Avengers, hated what they turned Tony into. He hadn’t understood before, had even gotten angry at her over it, but he got it now.

“Tony, think about this a little…” Rogers was trying his whole ‘Captain America is disappointed in you’ spiel. Unfortunately for him, that wouldn’t work anymore.

“I have thought about this, and I’ve decided that it’s the right decision.”

“Please, like you need the money.” Maximoff scoffed.

“You’re right, I don’t. My employees, however, do. The projects Stark Industries are currently working on do need funding.”

“Like your projects are more important than saving the world.”

“I thought you didn’t need me to save the world? That I wasn’t hero material? If you don’t need me, you don’t need my money either.”

Romanoff, who had been silent the entire time, finally spoke up.

“So that’s what this is about? Tony, you’re just being petty. You need to let go of your ego and look at the big picture.”

She spoke softly, probably trying to lure him into a sense of comfort. He couldn’t believe that had worked on him before. Her manipulation tactics really were shitty, now that he looked at it more closely. If she was actually S.H.I.E.L.D’s best, how good really was S.H.I.E.L.D?

“S.H.I.E.L.D can fund you, they’re more than capable of that. They’ll provide weapons and pay for property damage, since the Avengers belong to them. Sure, it won’t be as good as what I could do, but I guess you should just make sure not to destroy anything. Keep up public opinions so I won’t have to pay for a PR team. That should be easy, just, don’t kill anyone and you’re all set.”

“Tony - ”

“No, Rogers. You want my money? You can’t have it! You’ve been living off my shit this whole time, not expecting anything in return. You want money? Get a fucking job. You’re not entitled to shit, so quit acting like it.”

“You’re just describing yourself, Stark.”

“Unlike you, Maximoff, I actually worked for my money.”

“By selling weapons! By killing my parents!”

“I didn’t do that. The whole notion is stupid, anyway. I didn’t make those weapons, or consent to them being sold. They were sold under the table without my knowledge. You know what I did as soon as I found out? I killed the guy responsible. So quit being a bitch, Maximoff, and ‘look at the bigger picture’, would ya?”

“She’s just a - ”

“She is not ‘just a kid’. She’s a full grown adult, who’s well aware of what she’s doing. Alright, look, I’m done here. You’re all evicted from my place, so leave before tomorrow and face no legal repercussions. ‘Avengers Tower’ is turning back into Stark Tower.”

“Tony, please.”

“Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I’m resigning. Iron Man is going solo. I’d say I hope you guys figure things out, but I’d be lying. I really just want you to crash and burn.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because I’m Tony fucking Stark. And I’m gonna reign hell on you motherfuckers.”
