Mycroft stood in front of the fridge, contemplating what to make for dinner, long ears twitching in thought, when arms wrapped around his knees, almost knocking him off balance.
He was not surprised to see the fluffy hair of Jawn, forehead pressed to Mycroft’s legs, floppy ears flat against the back of his head, the poor thing shaking.
Mycroft reached a hand down, smoothing his hair and ears soothingly, trying to calm the boy and bring the timid thing out of hiding.
“What is the matter sweetheart? What do you need?” Mycroft spoke softly.
Mycroft felt Jawn take a big, shuddering breath and pull his head out from his hiding place. Mycroft saw the tear-stained cheeks and glassy blue eyes, and, oh they pulled at his heartstrings.
“Come here little one.” Mycroft crouched down and drew the teary little into his arms, running his hands up and down the toddlers back soothingly. He scooped Jawn up into his arms and onto his hip, before walking towards the living room, where the boys had been playing nicely together not ten minutes ago.
The living room looked as if a bomb had gone off. Sofa cushions littered the floor, Lego all over the carpet and Lock’s toy box had been upended.
Wait a minute… a quick scan of the room showed hide nor hair of Lock.
“Now, do you know where your naughty brother is Jawn? Hmm?” Mycroft bounced the still upset little in his arms gently. Jawn raised his head from where he had nestled it in Mycroft’s neck, sniffing slightly, and rubbed his forearm across his nose, wiping away the snot as he looked around the room, before nodding his head.
“Such a clever boy! Where is he then Darling?” Mycroft cooed and placed Jawn on his slightly unsteady feet.
Jawn slowly made his way through the obstacle course of toys and sofa cushions, to the upturned toybox. When he was a few steps away from the box, and consequently in front of a sofa cushion, a loud hiss came from the box, surprising Jawn and causing him to fall backwards, luckily onto the soft, thick cushion.
“Lock! Don’t scare your brother! Now, come out of there please and tidy this mess.”
Piercing blue eyes peeked out from the bottom of the overturned toybox meekly, before the toybox was lifted, revealing black silky curls and, cat ears barely visible through the thick hair.
“But My…”
“No buts mister, first apologise to Jawn, then pick up your toys please.” Mycroft crossed his arms and waited patiently while the kitten fidgeted, still partially hidden by the toybox, before he crawled his way to where Jawn was still sitting on the cushion, worrying at his left ear.
“Sorry Jawn.” Lock muttered before sitting beside him and started cleaning his long brown and white spotted ears, causing Jawn to giggle innocently.
Mycroft shook his head fondly, rolling his eyes and made his way to the kitchen to start making dinner.
